This chapter examines the project of fusion or confluence philosophy: philosophizing that draws on resources from both Indian and Western philosophical traditions in seeking solutions to philosophical problems. A distinction is drawn between the confluence project and the project of comparative philosophy. Various challenges to the project are addressed, among them the criticism that the two traditions are incommensurable, and the charge that such a project is politically problematic. There is also discussion of some ways in which projects of this sort can go astray. Representative samples of the genre are discussed, and areas that might prove promising for future research are identified.

Moving from the republic of letters to Westminster and the West Midlands, this chapter investigates whether the impact of distrust found in Chapter 3 was limited to the likes of Hartlib, whose projects often never materialized. Andrew Yarranton provides an ideal test case. His Stour river navigation scheme was the first of its kind authorized by a private act of parliament after the Restoration of Charles II; it provided a foundation for the Stourbridge Canal, completed in the 1770s. Moving beyond the analysis of promotional strategies, the chapter combines sources conventionally used in parliamentary history and local economic history to establish in what ways the deep-seated distrust of the projector affected different stages of this relatively successful project—parliamentary debate, petitioning campaigns, coordination between Yarranton and financial backers, and the project’s implementation in the West Midlands.

This chapter moves from the case study of Chapter 4 to a more general investigation into England’s projecting culture after the Restoration of Charles II in 1660. Drawing on the French concept of convention, it brings together a range of projects promoted and discussed in printed tracts, Privy Council meetings, parliamentary debates, and meetings and publications of the Royal Society. Writers now toned down religious language. Memories of early Stuart projects and grievances dissuaded the restored monarchy and other vigilant actors from pursuing schemes that required extensive compulsion or coercion. This was how the preference shifted decisively towards mobilizing people’s benign desire for emulation, profit, and comfort, a new economic convention that drew squarely on changing attitudes towards human desire, on increasing colonial trade, and on the rising purchasing power of labourers.

This chapter argues that the relationship between Hobbes and English deism was closer than is usually appreciated. Hobbes and the subsequent deists had similar ideas on the relationship between politics and religion, a topic which was at the very centre of their projects. They all were motivated primarily by anticlericalism and were the leading figures in the early battle against priestcraft. This argument is presented in two parts. The first reviews the ways in which Charles Blount, John Toland, Matthew Tindal, and Anthony Collins were indebted to Hobbes, each in his own distinct way. The second part argues that Hobbes’s theory contained some central elements that were, in fact, rather ‘enlightened’—the hope for natural reason being one main theme—thus bringing Hobbes’s project closer to that of subsequent deists. Deism, in this sense, was one possible highway to what may be seen as a Hobbesian enlightenment.

From its beginnings as a relatively obscure and exotic subject studied by a devoted few, comparative constitutionalism has developed into one of the more fashionable subjects in contemporary legal scholarship, and has become a cornerstone of constitutional jurisprudence and constitution-making in an increasing number of countries worldwide. Despite this tremendous renaissance, the “comparative” aspect of comparative constitutional law, as a method and a project, remains blurry and under-theorized. The introduction sets out the main arguments and structure of the book. The intellectual history and analytical underpinnings of comparative constitutional inquiry are charted and the various types, aims, and methodologies of engagement with the constitutive laws of others through the ages are probed. The introduction also surveys in a nutshell arguments developed in the book as to how and why comparative constitutional inquiry has been, and perhaps ought to be more extensively, pursued by academics and jurists worldwide.

The units are based around the Common Core State Standards, AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner, and other national content standards. Developed by two library media specialists with extensive experience in creating educational and entertaining lesson plans for teachers, the book takes the concept of Big6 a step further by transforming the process into an engaging character who drops in to help students solve the problems. The exercises presented are based on interesting, realistic situations and are specifically designed to encourage critical thinking.

This chapter explores a range of representations of Magna Carta in the public sphere, and the authors argue that the significance of the Great Charter lies less in constitutional history and more in the different political uses to which the Charter has been put over time. Plans for the 800th commemoration of the Charter in 2015, proposed by both national and local organizations, are examined through oral history interviews with some of the leading participants. These plans ranged from the ideologically conservative and international collaborations of elite national organizations to the more inclusive commemorative activities of the local community. However, the tensions within both local and national projects of commemoration, the absence of broad public involvement, and the financial recession reduced what was intended as high-profile celebration to a more muted and elitist form.
