Abstract This article offers an introduction to the Textual History of the Ethiopic Old Testament (THEOT) project. This includes a description of the background to THEOT and its primary purpose of mapping the history of the transmission of the Ethiopic Old Testament. The bulk of the article summarizes the project’s preliminary findings, generally, and, in particular, about Ethiopic Psalms, Song of Songs, Deuteronomy, Ruth, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, and Haggai. Some attention is also given to evidences of contact with the Hebrew text tradition, although the Ethiopic is clearly a daughter version of the LXX.

The following article attempts to answer the question if it is possible to find criteria enabling to solve the ethical-political dilemmas such as the one of Rospudy Valley on the grounds of Jonas ethical theory, the answer to this question is reconsidered in the context of Jonas philosophical project which is the establishment of ethics for life in the ontology of organic being. On the grounds of metaphysics, Jonas justifies the constitutive link between consciousness with being and the absolute good in affirmation of the importance of existence over non-existence. Jonas shows both the continuity and special discontinuity of the human being within the domain of the livings However, he is not able to support his argument that the human being is the primary object of responsibility being ahead of other forms of organic life. Jonas ethical theory ought to include the specification of moral principles that will be useful for clarifying the matters that must be preserved and defended.

Across various projects in the 1960s and ’70s, Joan Jonas created forms of self-portraiture enmeshed within environments. Engaging a range of media including mirrors, water, and video, Jonas repeatedly emphasized her body’s interrelation with surrounding natural and media ecologies. The resultant ecological portraits offer a model of being that encourages audiences to acknowledge their own embodiment in encounters with nature, whether experienced directly or through mediation. This article excavates this intermedia practice and explores the forms of ecocritical thought her performances and records might produce. Working in an era of expanding media experiments across performance, sculpture, and video, Jonas’s multimedia projects collaborate with the surrounding environment to explore the emergent openness of art in the 1970s. This article takes Jonas’s Disturbances (1974) as its starting point, arguing that Jonas featured the reflective and refractive properties of water to meditate upon the ecological resonances of the myth of Narcissus, the distorting optics of video, and the mediation of nature broadly. Similarly, in recent projection-based projects, Jonas has continued her exploration of the body’s relationship to both nature and media by incorporating her body into projected nature videos. In keeping with her stated unwillingness to “penetrate space,” ecological portraits across Jonas’s career reveal her multidirectional entanglements with spaces near and far, from waves in a pool to global oceanic crises.

The anomaly of Jonah's attitude in rejecting God's call (Jonah 1) and his anger at Nineveh's conversion caused various opinions on the genre of his book. This encourages the need to produce new findings to narrow the view of experts by placing the book of Jonah as satire literature. The purpose of this research is to describe the satire elements contained in the prologue and epilogue of the book of Jonah. The method used in this research is a narrative approach using a modified method that departs from the four narrative elements namely the narrator, character (characterization), point of view, and storyline then combined with some elements of general interpretation in it. through the narrative analysis method, the researcher sees the text as a "mirror" that projects a certain picture, namely the world of narratives that provides benefits to explore the forms and elements of the prologue and epilogical satire texts of the book of Jonah. The results showed that Irony underlies all elements of satire spread in articles 1 and 4. Researchers classify the elements of irony as personification, repetition, hyperbole, sarcasm, paronomasia, and parody. These characteristics indicate Jonah 1 and 4 are narratives containing satire. The implication of the teaching of the church by referring to the didactic values in the satire of the story of Satire Jonah can be used as a reference for learning the truth of God's Word. Bioethical challenges associated with the development of human e mbryo genome editing technologies are being investigated. The role of bioethics as a forum for discussing the interdisciplinary anthropological and ethical problems generated by the progress of biomedical technologies is noted. The basis of contradictions and discussions around the acceptability of the technologies under consideration is the value ambivalence associated with the difference between the artificial and the natural. Almost any innovation in the field of biology and medicine, and here genome editing technologies are no exception, since its inception has been at the epicenter of a sharp ideological confrontation between supporters of the progressive technological transformation of the world and their opponents from the camp of environmentally concerned people of bio-conservative values. Progressive ideas are refined through ideas the life instrumentalization. Bio-conservative ideas are substantiated by the principle of natality H. Arendt, which is used by J. Habermas in criticizing neo-eugenic projects and supported by G. Jonas in the concept of ecological imperative. The problem of the moral status of embryos, the specific advantages and disadvantages of conservative and liberal positions are analyzed, and a retroactive model of the moral status of embryos is proposed, which represents a specific social construction. The project of normative monitoring of the consequences of using human embryo genome editing technologies Sh. Yasanoff is discussed. Its connection with the ideas of ethics of responsibility of H. Dialogical Self Theory has contributed to the endeavors to map and grid self-identity work in transition from military to civilian life throughout an empirical and longitudinal research project which focuses on existential dimensions. This article is based on a case study from this project and centers upon Sergeant Jonas, who, upon his return from deployment in Afghanistan, struggled with his transition as a new existential position was vocalized throughout the following annual interviews. This voice narrated feelings of meaninglessness, emptiness, and of having been deceived. In turn, this existential voice required an answer to a question which apparently had no answer. The meaning-making eventually evolved into an acceptance which enabled Jonas to proceed with his life. Dialogical processes between positions are important in order to go on with life amid existential concerns in the aftermath of military service since dialogicality of the self opens up a complex of dynamics of meaning-making processes, negotiations, and transformations. Based on the findings, it is suggested that the Personal Position Repertoire could potentially be strengthened by the addition of an internal existential position to its standard repertoire, at least when working with military personnel and/or veterans.

Abstract Background: Galectins are sugar binding proteins that play a role in adhesion, apoptosis, immune regulation, and many other cellular processes. There are three different classes of galectins, and they are all found intracellularly and secreted in serum. Galectins have an established relationship with breast cancer, and galectin-3 has been repeatedly associated with cancer cell survival and tumor progression. Most research regarding breast cancer and galectins has used immunohistochemistry (IHC) as a method for identifying galectin expression in breast cancer tissue samples. However, little research has identified a relationship between serum galectin concentrations and breast cancer subtypes. Breast cancer is characterized both by histological and molecular subtype, and this identification often directs treatment decisions. The current method for identifying breast cancer subtypes is through invasive biopsy and the subsequent use of IHC. This project characterized serum galectin concentrations in breast cancer patients to determine if they changed based on different histological and molecular subtypes, cancer stage, and other patient characteristics. Our goal was to evaluate a potential noninvasive means of breast cancer subtype identification and to identify potential therapeutic targets. Methods: One-hundred breast cancer patient serum samples were studied using Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISAs) to determine concentrations of galectins -1, -3, -7, and -9. Results were compared using many patient characteristics, including breast cancer subtype, stage, and patient history (smoking status and treatment). Statistical Analysis was performed using ANOVA, Student’s t-test, and the Wilcoxon Method. Results: The concentrations of galectins -1, -3, and -9 in breast cancer patients were all significantly higher than those of healthy controls (Table 1), which is consistent with previous studies. The concentration of galectin-3 was significantly higher in invasive lobular carcinoma samples (N, 6; mean, 13.04 ng/mL) compared to invasive ductal carcinoma samples (N, 80; mean, 9.93 ng/mL; p-value, 0.0428). Galectin-3 concentrations were significantly lower in samples from breast cancer patients who received chemotherapy (N, 9; mean, 9.22 ng/mL) versus those who did not (N, 7; mean, 14.60 ng/mL; p-value, 0.0228). Concentrations of galectin-1 were found to increase by stage (p-value, 0.0031), with significant differences between samples from patients with stage I breast cancer (N, 45; mean, 19.02 ng/mL) and both stage II (N, 40; mean, 24.15 ng/mL; p-value, 0.0127) and stage III (N, 12; mean, 28.37 ng/mL; p-value, 0.0026) disease. Conclusions: Our findings suggest a potential use for serum galectin-3 concentrations as a non-invasive means for breast cancer histological subtype differentiation and more refined diagnosis. In addition, our results suggest a possible use of galectin-1 concentrations for more accurate cancer staging. Further research could explore the relationship of serum galectin concentrations and other breast cancer subtypes. Future studies could also analyze how galectin concentrations change with patient treatment status and determine the potential of galectins as specific targets for breast cancer treatment. Abstract The aim of the article is to support critical consideration about what quality is and might be in ECEC. It argues that two different quality cultures – understandings of what quality is, how it may be understood and supported – intersect and create tensions in relation to the ECEC area in Denmark. One is analyzed as influenced by a transnational quality discourse, a specific regime of truth regarding quality as a phenomenon “out there” that must be defined and assessed to improve. This technical-instrumental quality culture needs to be balanced by a quality culture founded in pedagogy as a distinct perspective foundational for ECEC. Drawing on a continental tradition of pedagogy as a human science discipline the article offers a language and understanding of pedagogical qualities. Such qualities refer to the attributes of pedagogy and go beyond what is easily disregarded as subjective in the prevailing quality culture. To identify such pedagogic qualities the article revisits empirical data from a narrative research project that explored pedagogic knowledge at play in ECEC professionals’ practice. The article argues that a critical quality culture founded in thoughtful consideration and ethical balancing of pedagogical qualities is crucial for the sake of the children and our democratic society.

The importance of polylingual education has grown significantly in recent decades. Recognizing the importance of multilingual education, the language policy of the European Union provides for the preservation and development of the native language of the EU, as well as a perfect knowladge of at least two foreign languages. The introduction of polylingual education has already reached the scale of public policy in many EU countries, including Greece, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Italy, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Finland, Sweden and Switzerland. Multilingualism should be considered not only as a communicative compulsion, but as a necessity for the sustainable development of society in any country of the world and an important factor in life in the period of global development. Analysis of publications shows that multilingualism is a feature of the modern country, demonstrates the successful coexistence of multilingual societies. These facts reveal the importance of the transformation of school education. Particular importance is attached to the problem of mastering foreign languages. The European Center for Modern Languages provides examples of successful introduction and functioning of polylingual education in educational institutions of different countries. All these projects are included in the general project of the European Center for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe "PlurCur". The language concept of Ukrainian education needs changes and improvements, reorientation to polylingual education. The experience of the PlurCur project in a common educational context in all languages studied is especially useful for Ukraine. We make assumptions about the possibility of introducing a model, programs and other components of this project in the education system of Ukraine. The idea of polylingual education is considered in the article and the schemes of the polylingual program in the form of the diagrams by Britta Hufeisen and Jonas Erin are offered. Taking into account the proposed models of multilingual education programs, as well as taking into account the national language and educational context of Ukraine, we propose a general model of multilingual education, which can be considered as one of the possible options for multilingual education in Ukraine, for the development of polylingual competence of students.

Today, the Limburg landscape shows little evidence of its mining past. Existing artwork, on the other hand, regularly references the mining industry. Among the different types of artwork, stained-glass windows are perhaps an unexpected artistic witness of the mining industry and as such constitute a largely overlooked part of mining heritage. This article focuses on these mining windows, which depict the mining industry in various ways. Mining windows have not been the subject of many studies, nor does an overarching catalogue exist. This incited the authors and the Centre for the Social History of Limburg (SHCL) to create the GLiM-project (Stained-glass windows and Dutch mines). The project focuses on compiling an online database of mining windows, starting with those in Dutch Limburg. Starting from the example of the Amazon, in Brazil, we intend to analyse how technology (mainly in its biotechnological face) appears as a threat to biodiversity, insofar as it acts through a reduction and standardization: technology needs to reduce diversity to something knowable to be able to control and exploit, in view of human necessities. In this sense, according to Hans Jonas, it is necessary to ask about the horizon of the future giving preference to the negative prognosis (fear rather than hope) to avoid that the harmful consequences of nihilism (marked by the absence of criteria capable of guiding technological action) affect life decisively. In this case, the Enhancement project proposed by transhumanism appears as yet another chapter in the history of risks represented by modern technology.

The essay argues that a proper ethical foundation for the political processes underlying liberal democracy is unattainable in a globalized society made possible through networked computers – and the transformed relationship with temporality that is generated by them. The essay brings together the computer ethics of Norbert Wiener and the temporal ethics of Hans Jonas to show that both original visions for a better world are unrealizable in the unanticipated context of what is termed ‘network time’. The essay argues further that to develop an ethical basis for liberal democracy, digital logic and its effects must be contrasted with that which they ceaselessly colonize and marginalize today: an irreducibly analogue world, with analogue politics, analogue technologies and analogue humans who conceived and developed liberal democracy as a cornerstone of the project of Enlightenment. Through contrast and critique, the essay reveals the difficulty for any ethico-political project within the digital and argues that the present post-modern relationship with computing, in which ‘market forces’ determine technological forms and applications, is socially destructive and must be brought under a new aegis of democratic and common responsibility.

Abstract Redistribute Toxicity was a commissioned art piece created by visual artist Jonas Staal in close collaboration with environmental historian Jonas Stuck and curator and researcher Caroline Ektander, and later enriched by the knowledge and practices of seed librarian, artist, and activist Zayaan Khan for the exhibition The Long Term You Cannot Afford: On the Distribution of the Toxic at SAVVY Contemporary in Berlin in 2019. Informed by historical research on the trade of hazardous waste between the two Germanys during the Cold War—with a particular focus on the landfill Vorketzin, which served as West Berlin’s primary hazardous waste disposal site during the division—the art commission asked us to consider what an act of redistribution of a toxic past could look like. Similar to other waste practices premised on systems of externalization, the one that transpired between a divided Germany resulted in an asymmetrical impact on human, animal, and plant lives populating the former East—effects that are till this day hard to account for. The research process generated a series of designs that exposed the various practical and ethical issues entangled with acts of retribution and helped shape a project that became less concerned with correcting the past and more committed to reconfiguring toxic relations in the present. The final installation design propagated seeds from the wetland vegetation surrounding the landfill. This wild vegetation had not only become implicated in Germany’s toxic history as silent witnesses but had also helped remediate the soils over time.

Introduction: Adults living in bateyes (i.e., sugarcane plantation villages) in the Dominican Republic have minimal access to health care services. Hypertension (HTN) is a serious and often unrecognized health problem among batey residents. The Jonas Batey Hypertension Program was built on existing social networks to address the detection and treatment of HTN. Methods: An ongoing community-based participatory research endeavor involves a partnership among three organizations and collaboration with promotoras who engage their batey communities in a mobile HTN screening and treatment program. Adults are screened and, if indicated, are treated with antihypertensive medications. Data collection includes project documentation, participant observation, demographic data, blood pressure (BP) measurements, and pill counts. Results: To date, 243 adults have received HTN treatment in four batey communities. A within-group, as-treated, repeated-measures, pre-/postanalysis showed that among participants who had been receiving antihypertensive treatment for 12 months ( n = 70), there was a significant decrease in BP ( p < .005). Conclusion: Results of an interim data analysis indicate that the program model has been implemented successfully and is making a positive impact on BP control. Evaluation is ongoing with regard to the long-term HTN-related health outcomes of batey residents. Ensuring program sustainability is an important consideration for the future.

This study aims to spotlight the postmodern tendency of metafiction in Ian Watson’s novel “Chekhov's Journey”. Metafiction is self-conscious in relation to language, literary form, and storytelling in fiction. This form of fiction accentuates its construct and reminds the readers to be aware of a fictional work. Ian Watson is a noteworthy science-fiction writer, and his famous novelsare ‘The Embedding’ (1973) and ‘The Jonah Kit’ (1975), which brought him prestigious awards, while in this study we will focus on his metafictional work ‘Chekhov’s Journey’. This novel exhibits the subject of postmodern metafiction. In this novel, a modern-day actor uses hypnosis to simulate Anton Chekhov's 1890 journey through Siberia. The method of study adopted the metafiction theories proposed by Patricia Waugh and Linda Hutcheon. It highlights Ian Watson’s texts that represent the elements of metafiction through the protagonists. Using various theories related to postmodern metafiction, the view of metafiction in the work is substantiated and explored. The postmodern perspective of metafiction is explored in Ian Watson’s text and analyzed with metafiction theories. The study results are compared and discussed with other studies and contemporary texts concerning metafiction. The findings show that metafiction is applicable in the given work of Ian Watson. He projects the aspects of metafiction in his work through his writing, especially narration, both fiction and reality.

The concept of global education is based on the recognition of the world as a network of interdependencies and on realizing the fact that the current direction of the development of civilization is leading to environmental and humanitarian disaster. On the other hand, there is a belief that there is still a chance to change this state of affairs by means of education. The purpose of education is recognized as not only a transfer of knowledge, but also as a transfer of morals that are able to generate a shift in attitudes. In order to strengthen the impact of the global education project, it is necessary to provide a coherent description and axiological analysis of the values behind it. In the paper, we argue that ethicists should work on building philosophical arguments for the development and implementation of global education programs. We argue further that such a philosophical framework should be based on the ideas of new humanism (proposed by Aurelio Peccei) and global responsibility (formulated by Hans Jonas).

Abstract Restrictions on the scope of government action by forcing authorities to act exclusively to the extent permitted by law are a guarantee against abuses of power when authorities’ decisions have environmental implications. Such control ensures that this becomes a reality because it provides a way by which to overcome administrative inefficiency and avoid departure from the essential aims of public institutions. Environmental commitment is necessary for denationalization of the state; it appears as a subsidiary to the initiative and participation of citizens, which, by shifting functions to the private sphere, is also linked to destatization strategies. In light of these assumptions, and the consideration that decisions should not be taken without the input of communities, this article advocates the inclusion of citizens’ voices in environmental policies and management. These issues are addressed from the perspective of Hans Jonas’ ethic of responsibility, with the aim to develop socially responsible and participatory projects.

Purpose – This investigation is guided by the following research questions: employing Hart and Milstein’s (2003) Sustainable Value Framework as analytic tool, what is the extent of the integration of sustainability focused strategies by Asian-based companies in their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives? How can the ethics of responsibility of Hans Jonas help rethink the current understanding and doing of CSR in Asia towards achieving a truly responsible and sustainable corporate identity? Design/methodology/approach – This research uses Centering Resonance Analysis (CRA), which is a relatively sophisticated form of content analysis methodology suitable for studying formal written communication such as the published CSR reports. To accomplish the complex task of CRA, the Crawdad Text Analysis System 1.2 is used. The Crawdad Text Analysis Software is an analytical software package developed specifically to perform CRA. Findings – Using the Hart and Milstein Sustainable Value Framework as a diagnostic tool, the empirical findings reveal that Asian-based companies’ CSR projects exhibit a very low degree of integration of sustainability strategies. This paper proposes a theoretical process model that explains the planned development of CSR initiatives – through a CSR tract elucidated as corporate sustainability and responsibility – a holistic management approach aimed at providing impetus for companies in Asia to pursue the goal of becoming responsible and sustainable companies. It reconciles the concepts of CSR and corporate sustainability using Hans Jonas’ ethics of responsibility as the philosophical footing. Research limitations/implications – The primary objective of this study, therefore, is to examine how companies located in Asia embrace sustainability in their CSR engagement. It stems back to the fundamental question, “How do companies in Asia manage their CSR” – i.e. as a strategic response to changing circumstances and new corporate challenges? This question drives this study’s search for empirically based conclusions on current CSR program thrusts and the advancement of sustainability strategies of firms operating in Asia. Practical implications – Building upon the empirical results gained from the above objective is the equally important goal of the study to advance Hans Jonas’ ethics of responsibility as a basis for a blueprint to a revitalized view of CSR amongst Asian firms in their pursuit to become responsible and sustainable corporations. The integration of philosophical theory adds foundational depth to the study. Social implications – Building upon the empirical results gained from the above objective is the equally important goal of the study to advance Hans Jonas’ ethics of responsibility as a basis for a blueprint to a revitalized view of CSR among Asian firms in their pursuit to become responsible and sustainable corporations. The integration of philosophical theory adds foundational depth to the study. Originality/value – This multidisciplinary study seeks to contribute to CSR literature in two ways. First, it highlights the significance of the need for empirical descriptions of firm-level CSR structures and practices that may give a more thorough account of the overall quality of business involvement of Asian-based firms on sustainability issues. Second, this investigation underscores the need for conceptual robustness to guide CSR initiatives undertaken by firms within a sustainability paradigm. A grounded theoretical model is henceforth presented in this paper to enrich the discussion on the strategic management of ecological responsibility through a holistic approach to CSR.

This paper summarises the research material of the ongoing global grant project, “Modern Research of Geolinguistics in Lithuania: Optimisation of Network of Points and Interactive Spread of Dialectal Information.” The project aims to collect the most important sociolinguistic data of the entire Lithuanian language area, with the purpose of carrying out a primary analysis of the items found in order to make a record of the Lithuanian language situation at the beginning of the 21st century. In fact, the collecting of toponyms started earlier, especially after the foundation of the Group of Onomastics at the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, at the Institute of the Lithuanian Language and Literature in 1958. In the period of 1976–1986, the Institute, in collaboration with the Society of Heritage Protection and Regional Studies, launched 11 major expeditions to several regions of Lithuania. Expeditions on onomastics and dialectology were also organised at the Vilnius University Kaunas Faculty of Humanities. In the period of 1979–1989, students of the Kaunas Faculty of Humanities, supervised by Albertas Ružė, collected the onyms in the Samogitian region (Telšiai, Mažeikiai, Akmenė and two-thirds of the Skuodas district). During the abovementioned period, two two-day long annual expeditions to the birthplaces of outstanding Lithuanian linguists (e.g., Juozas Balčikonis, Jonas Kazlauskas and others) were organised. In 1977–1988, the expedition members, under the direction of Alvydas Butkus, collected the onyms in such areas as Ukmergė, Molėtai, Utena, Kaunas, Pasvalys, Biržai, Jurbarkas, and Lazdijai. The paper overviews one aspect of the item questionnaire, i.e., the onomastics of part of the live language heritage: toponyms and nicknames. The research is based on the descriptive method and deals with the analysis of the toponyms and nicknames of the dialectal items of the Pasvalys, Kaunas and Marijampolė counties. Moreover, it gives an explanation of the folk etymology of the item names. The research involved 87 informants (of both genders) from different dialect areas and of different generations – the younger (under 30 years old), the middle (31–49 years old), and the elder (50 years old and over). Due to the rather fresh start of the project, the current paper presents only some initial insights, which will be revised upon the completion of the project.

In this paper I argue for recognizing the moral duty to participate in research. I base my argument on the need for biomedical research and the fact that at some point studies require human participants, what I call collaborative necessity. In presenting my position, I argue against the widely accepted views of Han Jonas and all of those who have accepted his declarations without challenge. I go on to show why it is both just and fair to invite and encourage people to participate in studies. It is just because research participation is the necessary means to achieve the broadly shared goals of preventing and curing disease and alleviating disease symptoms. Mutual love requires us to be willing to do for others what we would want them to do for us. It is fair because the approach treats similarly situated people in the same way. Research participation is morally required because failing to do one's part in the collaborative project of advancing biomedical science would be free-riding. People who exempt themselves from participation while eagerly accepting benefits from others doing their part are taking advantage of their compatriots and treating themselves as more deserving than others when they are not.

Summary During rescue excavations carried out near the vicus at Kempraten (municipality of Rapperswil-Jona, St. Gallen, Switzerland) in advance of a private construction project, a Mithraeum measuring approximately 8 by 10 m was unexpectedly discovered in the summer of 2015 and subsequently excavated and investigated in detail. This paper presents the preliminary results of the excavation, which was completed less than a year ago, and pays particular attention to the interdisciplinary approach used in the excavation. These included intense sampling of the features for the purposes of micromorphology and archaeobiology. Three construction phases with intermittent conflagrations were identified. The question as to whether there was an ante-chamber remains unanswered. The external areas are also quite difficult to interpret, at least for the time being. The rich assemblage of finds, which included numerous coins, pottery, animal bones and a range of religious artefacts (e.g. altars and a half relief), will only be dealt with in a cursory manner here. According to the range of coins, the Mithraeum undoubtedly dated from the late 3rd to the late 4th or early 5th centuries. The site will be analysed by an interdisciplinary team and preliminary work is already underway.

Summary During rescue excavations between 2009 and 2013 carried out at the periphery of the vicus at Kempraten (municipality of Rapperswil-Jona, St. Gallen, Switzerland) a Gallo-Roman sanctuary, dating from the second quarter of the 2nd to the end of the 3rd century AD, was unearthed. The excavation included intense sampling for geoarchaeology and archaeobiology, which prompted the Archaeology Department of Canton St. Gall (KASG) to launch an interdisciplinary project. Four curse tablets attest to the cult of Magna Mater in the sanctuary at Kempraten. This paper presents the first results of the interdisciplinary study and compares them to the Magna Mater sanctuary at Mainz (Germany), focusing on 1. the layout of the sanctuary, 2. sacrificing, 3. feastings and 4. cursing. The comparison between both sites showed that there was no strict setting of rituals in the cult of Magna Mater, but the importance of cursing and of burnt sacrifices is characteristic for both sites. Summing up: The temple precinct at Kempraten had a specific setting, which showed on one hand local and regional influences, for instance in terms of the temple architecture and the choice of food offerings. On the other hand, distinct differences between the Kempraten sanctuary and local Gallo-Roman sanctuaries can be observed, for instance in relation to cursing, the composition and the importance of the burnt offerings.

It is shown that for innovative practices related to digitalization and datafication in medicine, it is needed to rethink central bioethical concepts of personal autonomy and informed consent. In particular, the concept of broad or open informed consent is discussed, which allows the idea of moral responsibility in the field of biomedical technologies to be extended to events of uncertain future. The authors draw attention to the problems associated with the emergence of new autonomous subjects/agents (machines with artificial intelligence) in relationship between doctors and patients. The humanization of machines occurring in eHealth is accompanied by a counter trend – the formation of conceptions and practices of the quantified self. There emerges the practices of self-care and bio-power (M. Foucault) caused by the datafication and digitization of personality. The authors conclude that bioethics should proactively develop norms for the evolving interaction between doctor and patients.

This research investigates the semantics and the structure of the constructions with the verb eiti ‘to go’ extracted from the old Lithuanian written texts, dating back to the 16th century. It aims to examine the meanings and the structure of the constructions that contain the motion verb eiti ‘to go’ within their structure. There is a considerable body of research investigating various aspects of motion verbs in different languages of the world, including Lithuanian. However, no studies have so far targeted constructions with the verb eiti ‘to go’, found in the 16th century Lithuanian writings. The present study is based on the qualitative content analysis, quantitative analysis, and frame semantics methodology. The concordances of the Lithuanian texts have been filtered out from the Database of Old Writings digitalised by the Institute of the Lithuanian Language. The examples were taken from Martynas Mažvydas’ Katekizmas (MžK) and Forma krikštymo (MžF), Jonas Bretkūnas’ Biblija (BB), Giesmės Duchaunos (BG), Kancionalas (BKa) and Kolektos (BKo), Mikalojus Daukša’s Katekizmas (DK) and Postilė (DP).The frames of Motion, State, Law, Eternity, Service, Opposition, Law, etc., evoked by the selected constructions, were examined using the frame semantics (FrameNet Project). The research has shown that the current constructions with the motion verb eiti ‘to go’ can form the core of the mentioned frames. The observation that has emerged from this analysis is that some meanings of the analysed constructions are conserved in the current Lithuanian language while others have already disappeared. This work could be useful for historical linguists.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the interplay between government initiatives, public trust in government, and citizen engagement within the context of two distinct crisis scenarios: a global health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and an international security crisis caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine. A two-stage biennial survey methodology is used to collect quantitative data. In the first phase, which took place in the context of a global health crisis, an omnibus survey was conducted, involving a randomly selected sample of 3,175 respondents from three Baltic countries: Estonia (n = 1002), Latvia (n = 1017), and Lithuania (n = 1006). In the second stage, which took place in the context of an international security crisis, a random sample was carried out of 2026 respondents from two Baltic countries: Estonia (n = 1002) and Lithuania (n = 1024). The analysis examined causal relationships in political, rational, and social trust. The findings reveal that the relationship between trust in the government and government initiatives that foster political, rational, or emotional trust is stronger during international security crises than during health crises. This means that citizens perceive government behavior as more credible in the context of external security threats. Research on the interaction between government behavior and citizen participation is more nuanced than on public trust. In general, government initiatives have a greater impact on citizen participation than public trust in both crises. This highlights the positive impact of government initiatives in cooperation with the population. Modern bureaucratic competencies, such as creativity, innovative problem-solving, and critical thinking, have become essential in contemporary public management due to complex challenges in a wide range of areas, including the economy, social welfare, and the environment. This has led to a greater focus on developing these competencies, through innovative methods like creative problem-solving (CPS) in the training of public management specialists. The aim of this study is to identify specific competencies among public management professionals that can be cultivated through the CPS approach and to explore the critical conditions for its successful implementation. The analysis was conducted at the Military Academy of Lithuania, where CPS techniques have been consistently integrated into public management-related subjects for several years, forming a stable foundation for the in-depth investigation. First, the study examines Lithuania’s legal framework for public management and public management education to implement CPS. Second, a qualitative data analysis of open-ended feedback (n = 199) highlights practical application. The findings reveal that the Lithuanian legal context underscores the importance of fostering creativity and innovation among public managers. Furthermore, the practical integration of CPS into public management curricula promotes modern bureaucratic qualities such as teamwork, critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, innovation, and leadership. However, effective CPS implementation requires additional curriculum time, a supportive and creative learning environment, and strong teacher and student commitment. These findings underscore CPS’s potential as a valuable tool for cultivating public management competencies. Abstract Structural rearrangements and in particular, gene fusions, are key mutational processes in bone and soft tissue tumors, used for both disease classification and as biomarkers. However, the mutational processes and rearrangement processes underlying many of these events remain poorly characterized. Recent data indicate that sarcomas show particularly high frequencies of complex rearrangement events, including patterns which do not fit those of known mutational mechanisms. As the largest whole genome sequencing (WGS) cohort of sarcomas to date, the Genomics England (GE) 100,000 Genomes project represents a unique dataset in which to profile these events. Structural variants (SVs) were identified in whole genome sequencing data for 978 samples from the Genomics England 100,000 Genomes Project using an optimized approach based on 5 specialized SV callers. SVs identified by at least 2 callers were filtered to retain only those which passed the quality filter, and to remove variants present in either matched germline samples or >1% of a panel of normal variants. Chromothriptic events, extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA) and genes enriched for SVs were identified using established algorithms. The prevalence of SVs varies across sarcoma, in keeping with previous reports, with particularly high rates observed in myxofibrosarcoma and liposarcoma. As described previously, liposarcomas showed the highest rates of chromothripsis. We have examined some tumor types at higher granularity than previously available, demonstrating directly that the rates of complex rearrangement events vary across subtypes. For example, chromothriptic events are identified in 100% of well-differentiated liposarcomas, but less than 10% of myxoid liposarcomas. Similarly, the presence of ecDNA varies by tumor type, with the novel observation of particularly high rates in angiosarcoma. Using these data, we have catalogued the rearrangement patterns generating canonical gene fusions in fusion-driven soft tissue tumor types. Despite more recent advances in histological classification, survival for patients with sarcoma has remained largely unchanged for 40 years. Characterization of the mutational processes underlying these rearrangements will shed light on the pathogenesis of these tumors. Swedish Literature as World Literature in the Nineteenth Century. Top Selling Novels by Women Writers So far, Swedish literary history has been the construction of a nation’s cultural heritage based on certain authorships. This most certainly was the case when the history of the Swedish nineteenth-century novel was written. In textbooks, the important writers before Strindberg and Lagerlöf are Carl Jonas Love Almqvist and Viktor Rydberg. Sometimes a couple of female novelists are included, such as Fredrika Bremer and Emilie Flygare-Carlén. The actual circulation of Swedish novels in translation shows another picture. While Bremer and Flygare-Carlén, together with Marie Sophie Schwartz, were very popular novelists in both Europe and the United States, Almqvist’s and Rydberg’s novels reached very few readers outside of Scandinavia. This article aims to examine the export of Swedish novels in the nineteenth century. Statistics based on the SWED database, constructed in connection to the research project Swedish Women Writers on Export in the Nineteenth Century, is used to describe the distribution of Swedish novels across borders and their translation into different target languages. Similarities and dissimilarities in distribution and reception will be discussed, as well as some of the reasons behind these differences. The number of translated titles, as well as the transcultural circulation of the three most translated and top-selling novelists, Bremer, Flygare-Carlén and Schwartz, are compared to the circulation of Almqvist’s and Rydberg’s translated works. Based on these comparisons, it becomes obvious that if the history of Swedish literature were written from a transcultural perspective based on the contemporary audience’s choice of literary works and writers, it would look very different from the nation-based literary history of today. For example, Almqvist and Rydberg would be edged out by female novelists such as Bremer,Flygare-Carlén, and Schwartz.

SVs were filtered to retain only those passing the quality filter, and to remove variants present in either matched germline samples or >1% of a panel of normal variants. Caller performance was evaluated by comparison of distances between SV and copy number call breakpoints generated by Battenberg. SVs identified by at least two callers were taken forward as high-quality calls. Chromothriptic events, extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA) and breakage-fusion-bridges were identified using established algorithms. In keeping with previous data, the prevalence of structural variants varies by tumor type, with particularly high numbers of SVs observed in liposarcoma and osteosarcoma. The conceptual model, which is based on the systems theory and evaluation theory principles, involves the description of the digitization monitoring system and its scope, principles for the creation of the model, and the choice of the monitoring indicators and their approbation results. The key factor influencing the creation of such a system is digitization performed by numerous independent institutions subordinate to different ministries. The creation of a system for monitoring the digitization of cultural heritage objects aims at preventing the duplication of digitization activities, ensuring an effective use of technical equipment and software for performing the digitization of cultural heritage objects, applying the best practice of coordinated digitization activities and appropriate standards and formats, as well as a convenient and prompt access to information and statistical data on the results of the activities being performed. The digitization monitoring system is created in line with recommendations of the Feasibility Study for the Creation of a Digitization Monitoring System, prepared on demand of the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania, and requirements of the Specification for the Creation of Software for a Digitization Monitoring System in which, as one of its main requirements, was the creation of a manual of digitization monitoring. The article builds on the above-mentioned feasibility study. The rationale for the creation of a digitization monitoring system conforms with this system’s theory principles which require that the modelling of a system activities should involve an analysis of the input, process, and output, as well as feedback evaluation. The conceptual model of digitization monitoring is based on the following principles: • the system’s activity is shaped and organized by a holistic evaluation of the existing approaches to the creation of such systems; realization that a system aggregates multiple elements (interacting institutions and their units) which interact among themselves and with the environment; and abstraction of all elements and their interactions and merging them into a conceptual model. • indicators within a digitization monitoring system are determined through defining the existing state and problems of digitization activities, investigating the monitoring demands and requirements for such systems, and evaluating the conceptual model of this system, based on the results of a discussion. • The main criteria for selecting the indicators of digitization monitoring are clarity, relevance, efficiency, and possibility to monitor. A conceptual model based on the holistic approach allows designing a system able to monitor digitization activity results, standards and formats of metadata and access, identification and distribution of tasks, and tracking implementation of goals. It also enables institutions performing digitization activities to acquire information on digitization initiatives and current and (or) intended projects, on resources held by other institutions and the characteristics of these resources, on trainings, conferences or other events related to digitization that are on the agenda, also, it enables to successfully monitor and keep under review the realization of initiatives, programmes, and strategies, to facilitate a quality evaluation and performance improvement, to assess the risks, to improve supervision activities, efficiency, and management processes, to prepare accounts, to substantiate resources and expenses, to increase performance impact, and to monitor digitization initiatives as well as current and (or) intended projects.

Abstract Clinical problem. Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS) is a potential precursor for invasive breast cancer (IBC). Therefore, DCIS is currently treated with surgical excision, often supplemented with radiotherapy to prevent progression to ipsilateral IBC (iIBC). However, many DCIS lesions will never do so. Estimating the risk of progression is a grand challenge, as neither the histopathological grade of the DCIS lesion nor other biological markers are conclusively associated with the disease outcome. Aim. We aimed to develop a deep-learning based pipeline for estimating the risk of iIBC recurrence following DCIS using a dataset of 235 H&E-stained whole-slide images (WSIs) of the primary DCIS lesions with corresponding 10-year follow up metadata of DCIS recurrence collected at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. The patients included in our dataset did not receive radiotherapy and experienced recurrence in 167 of the cases. Results. We developed a two-step pipeline that is able to find predictive features for 10-year iIBC prediction. First, tissue regions on WSIs were divided into equally sized tiles. Mammary ducts were detected in the tiles using a RetinaNet with ResNet101 backbone that was implemented in Detectron2 and pre-trained on ImageNet. Selecting only tiles containing ducts served to reduce the input dimensionality of typically giga-pixel WSIs for the second step. Here, DCIS recurrence was predicted by a weakly-supervised multi-instance learning (MIL) classification model where the label of the WSI was determined by average weighting of duct labels. The performance of this model was enhanced by pre-training it with SimCLR, a self-supervised learning method, on image data from the histopathology domain. Our proposed model achieved an AUC of .93 ± .005, with a sensitivity of .83 ± .27 and a specificity of .85± .09. These results show that the model was able to correctly distinguish patients with low subsequent IBC-risk from those with a substantially higher risk. An active research pursuit of our group is now to develop a model which is able to predict iIBC progression for patients treated with radiotherapy. This poses additional challenges to the model, as the effect of radiotherapy, as well as disease outcome must be predicted. Conclusion and impact. Our method opens up an avenue for identifying biologically relevant features for estimating DCIS progression risk into invasive breast cancer. This knowledge may be used for appropriately choosing a personalized DCIS management option for patients - which may be active surveillance rather than surgical removal of the lesion. One of the objectives of BARE BONE was to assess the effect of baricitinib on joint damage and synovial inflammation. Participants of BARE BONE received hand MRI at week 0, 24, 48 following a standardized scanning protocol [2]. All images were scored according to RAMRIS. DNNs were applied on coronal T1 (pre/post contrast enhancement) and T2 MR images. 3-D landmarks for each location for RAMRIS scoring were identified and a region of interest (ROI) around each landmark was extracted to train a DNN. Three separate DNNs were trained, one for each of the RAMRIS subcomponents (erosion, synovitis, oedema). Each DNN is based on a ResNet-3D [3] architecture that was pretrained on a video classification task [4]. The networks were trained to predict the severity scores of each disease characteristic into three classes ranging from 0 (no pathological change) to 2 (high disease burden). The performance of the DNNs was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) and the area under the precision-recall curve (PR-AUC). Three-fold cross-validation were used and the network performance on a hold-out test set was evaluated.ResultsIn total, we obtained 212 coronal MR images with both T1 and T2 weighting from 30 RA patients (24 woman/6 men, age 53.5±12.6 years, disease duration 4.3±4.4 years). The overall RAMRIS score decreased from 20.6 (CI95% 14.4 to 27.8) to 18.3 (CI95% 11.5 to 26.5) at week 48. For the evaluation of erosions and oedema, 23 landmarks respectively were used per hand, and 7 landmarks for synovitis. In total 4608 landmarks for erosion and oedema were available, and for synovitis 1152 landmarks. The AUROC for predicting erosions was 86±2% with a PR-AUC of 83±4%. For the prediction of oedema the AUROC was 78±14% and PR-AUC was 83%±10%. Despite a low number of ROI for synovitis scoring, the respective AUROC was 60±4% and PR-AUC was of 69±3%.ConclusionThis proof-of-concept study demonstrated that fully automated extraction of synovitis, bone oedema, and erosion is feasible. In the future, our deep neural network approach may help to automatically assess MRI data of the hand in routine clinical practice and trials with high accuracy while keeping costs and human resources manageable.References[1]Østergaard M et al. BackgroundThe experience of art offers an emerging field in healthcare staff development, much of which is appropriate to the practice of palliative care. The workings of aesthetic learning interventions such as interactive theatre in relation to palliative and end of-life care staff development programmes are widely uncharted.AimTo investigate the use of aesthetic learning interventions used in palliative and end-of-life care staff development programmes.DesignScoping review.Data sourcesPublished literature from 1997 to 2015, MEDLINE, CINAHL and Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts, key journals and citation tracking.ResultsThe review included 138 studies containing 60 types of art. Studies explored palliative care scenarios from a safe distance. Learning from art as experience involved the amalgamation of action, emotion and meaning. Art forms were used to transport healthcare professionals into an aesthetic learning experience that could be reflected in the lived experience of healthcare practice. The proposed learning included the development of practical and technical skills; empathy and compassion; awareness of self; awareness of others and the wider narrative of illness; and personal development.ConclusionAesthetic learning interventions might be helpful in the delivery of palliative care staff development programmes by offering another dimension to the learning experience. As researchers continue to find solutions to understanding the efficacy of such interventions, we argue that evaluating the contextual factors, including the interplay between the experience of the programme and its impact on the healthcare professional, will help identify how the programmes work and thus how they can contribute to improvements in palliative care.References.
