Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) is a new best-first search guided by the results of Monte-Carlo simulations. In this article, we introduce two progressive strategies for MCTS, called progressive bias and progressive unpruning. They enable the use of relatively time-expensive heuristic knowledge without speed reduction. Progressive bias directs the search according to heuristic knowledge. Progressive unpruning first reduces the branching factor, and then increases it gradually again. Experiments assess that the two progressive strategies significantly improve the level of our Go program Mango. Moreover, we see that the combination of both strategies performs even better on larger board sizes.

AbstractThe aim is to evaluate the published evidence on whether methotrexate (MTX) use causes progressive fibrotic interstitial lung disease (fILD). This PRISMA-compliant systematic review has been registered electronically with PROSPERO 2018 ID CRD42018087838, Centre of review and dissemination at the University of York. A total of 29 articles met the inclusion criteria. Thirteen articles were found to support the claim that MTX causes fILD. They all had a low Downs and Black quality score (< 6/27). Their ‘risk of bias’ assessment scores indicated serious to critical risk of bias. The 16 articles rejecting the claim that MTX causes fILD were of higher quality as indicated by their Downs and Black score. Their ‘risk of bias’ assessment scores suggested only a low to moderate risk of bias. This systematic literature review supports the finding that MTX does not cause fILD in humans. Three studies suggest that MTX treatment may actually improve outcomes in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) associated fILD by slowing down ILD progression.

This study evaluated a possible anticipation bias when ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were obtained during submaximal progressive exercise testing. Perceptual estimates were obtained using the CR-10 category-ratio scale. 13 subjects, 7 men and 6 women ( M age = 26.8 ± 6.4 yr., height = 2.7 ± .17 m, weight = 73.0 ± 18.2 kg, VO2 peak = 46.7 ± 5.6 ml · kg−1 · min−1 for men and 47.8 ± 7.3 ml · kg−1 · min.−1 for women) recruited from the university student population participated. Each subject underwent two submaximal progressive exercise tests separated by at least 48 hr. using the cycle as test mode and the YMCA protocol. Power outputs established during the first test were presented in random order during the second test. Differentiated RPE for the Peripheral, Respiratory-Metabolic, and the undifferentiated signals, and heart rate, were measured during the last 15 sec. of each of the four stages of exercise. In comparing responses between the two tests, significant differences were observed for both heart rate and the Respiratory-Metabolic signal during power output 4, using repeated-measures analysis of variance. However, a 95% limit of agreement test was significant only for heart rate as the 95% confidence interval for the Respiratory-Metabolic signal overlapped zero and thus was not significantly different. No significant differences were found for the undifferentiated or peripheral signals between the two tests. Results indicate that both undifferentiated and differentiated RPE are given without significant anticipation bias during submaximal progressive cycle exercise.

LGBT hate crimes are typically more violent and involve greater victim injury as compared to other victimizations, but they are substantially underreported. Victim reluctance to contact law enforcement may arise from perceptions of police bias. This study explores victim–police interactions, specifically reporting to the police, perceived police bias among victims who did not report, and differential police behavior among victims who reported. Using multiple years of National Crime Victimization Survey data, sexual orientation bias victimizations are compared with other forms of victimization. Logit regression models are examined before and after the Matthew Shepard Act. The pattern of results indicate that in the years following progressive policy reforms, LGBT bias victims continue to perceive the police as biased. Results do not significantly differ between sexual orientation bias victims and victims of other types of crime regarding police reporting and differential police response. Implications for policing efforts with the LGBT community are discussed.

<p>The paper reconstructs Harold innis’ idea of media’s bias. It is argued that media construct a view of the future in line with temporalized Platonism that excludes people that belong to the past. The clash of statues and media in Charlottesville presented mediatization as a progressive but not dialectical force. Statues and media did not check each other’s biases. Media embody the confrontation of authority and publicity (Habermas) or the Enlightenment and Absolutism (Koselleck). After the neoliberal commercialization, the Enlightenment acquired the form of utopian future that confronts the media logic against conservative forces. The truth is constructed according to the prescribed future. Trump blamed all, in accordance with the Absolutist principle. Commercial media professionalism stood by its Enlightenment origins and accused Trump of revitalizing forces of the past. Because most citizens were against taking down the statues, commercialized media logic was less receiver steering than the public service media.</p>

In recent years there has been growing interest in early intervention in psychotic disorders and a number of clinical and research programmes have been developed. The clinical staging model has been an essential part of early intervention as it provides the rationale of existing programmes. In medicine, clinical staging is a valuable approach in disorders where primary pathology is progressive in nature. However, the clinical staging model of psychosis has been proposed without establishing first that schizophrenia is a primarily progressive disorder. In reviewing existing evidence, this current paper argues that cross-sectional data interpreted as supportive of clinical staging data does not consider the effects of sampling bias, problems in reliability in assessing ‘soft symptoms’, or false positives. Longitudinal neurobiological studies do not provide a convincing case for primarily progressive pathology in schizophrenia. Clinical progression in schizophrenia can be better conceptualised as neuroplastic changes in response to interaction between core developmental pathology and environmental stimuli. An alternative rationale for early and continuous intervention targeting neurodevelopmental abnormality and neuroplastic changes, as well as medical and psychological comorbidities, is proposed in this paper.

AbstractThis experiment investigated the effects of verbal labels on recognition memory for ambiguous visual figures in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), patients with Huntington's disease (HD), and matched normal control subjects. The study employed ambiguous figures that could be interpreted in two different ways. During the study phase each figure was presented together with a verbal label that corresponded to one interpretation of the figure. After a 30-min retention interval a recognition memory test was given during which the study figures and distractor figures were presented one at a time without verbal labels. For each study figure two distractor figures were employed, each corresponding to a different interpretation of the study figure. The patients' overall recognition memory performance was severely impaired compared to control subjects. However, all subject groups tended to produce responses and response latencies to distractor items that were consistent with the verbal labels presented during the study phase. This bias effect occurred in the AD patients despite the fact that their recognition memory performance was at chance level. Indeed, there was no significant difference in the bias evidenced by the AD and HD patients and their respective matched control subjects. The bias effects were obtained in an explicit memory task, and the findings are discussed in terms of unconscious influences on explicit memory processes. (JINS, 1995, I, 271–280.)

Annotation:
This thesis reviews algorithms that have been developed for classifying lidar data and identifies a progressive morphological filter for evaluation and improvement. Two potential weaknesses evaluated include the row-column order bias and grid orientation bias. Four different row-column orderings were developed to test for bias associated with the order choice. Moreover, a method rotating the filter grid to a series of angles was developed for testing bias associated with grid orientation. Measures of success of the improvements include Type I and II errors, where results are compared with a hand-produced "truth" dataset. Two datasets, one urban, the other rural, were selected for testing the modified filters. The results are presented and discussed for each algorithm. It was found that the four row-column orders all classified the dataset exactly the same. After the erosion and dilation functions were completed, the same surface profiles and elevations were produced regardless of row-column ordering. The filter windows used by the algorithm were found to create a rectangular area where the minimum and maximum values within that area were always selected. Therefore, it was found that the row-column orders did not create a bias in the classification. However, grid orientation was found to greatly affect results. Misclassification problems occurred at ridgelines, mounds, and along roads with ditches and steep slopes running along them. Grid angles running parallel to these objects were found to avoid these errors. Buildings also created errors, but were minimized with grid angles crossing them at 45 degrees. The selected angle directions significantly affect the classification results in all cases. Therefore, the grid orientation bias was verified. Two new methods of combining the results from the various angles have been developed. The first method used the best two classifying angles to combine the results. Best results were found in datasets with terrain objects positioned in similar directions for this method. The Multiple Angle method used all of the angle classifications to combine the results. This method performed best on datasets with terrain objects oriented in numerous directions. More accurate terrain models and better overall classification results have been generated using these methods.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate which difficulties Swedish students of German typically have and at the same time which structures they master without problems in order to give me, as a future teacher, some ideas how to create productive German lessons. Furthermore the students’ progression over the years is the main focus of this analysis. Students from the sixth grade up to the twelfth grade from two Swedish schools were asked to write essays which provide the corpus of this analysis. At the same time they were asked to fill in a questionnaire to conduct some, for the analysis, crucial background information. I begin my analysis by comparing the students’ essays within the classes and after that the essays of the different classes are compared with each other. At last a comparison with essays that were written as part of the national test during the late 90s will be made in order to find out whether students’ skills in German have changed over the years. Some theories concerning second language learning, for example Processability Theory, will be tested whether they apply for my test group or not.

This thesis is a collection of studies on son preference in Pakistan. The studies analyze the prevalence and strength of son preference and its effects on women’s childbearing. The role son preference plays in determining women's participation in intra-household decisionmaking is examined as are its effect on birth spacing, probability of risky births and role of maternal age at marriage in modifying gender-specific reproduction and development outcomes. We find strong evidence for both the revealed and stated preference for male offspring. The probability of continuing childbearing also decreases with the number of sons born. Furthermore, we find that women with at least one son have more say in ‘routine’ household decisions but not in financial decisions. Female participation in decision-making grows significantly with the number of sons but only up to the third parity. We find that women with at least one son are more likely to delay succeeding births. We obtain strong evidence at parity 1. The impact seems to dissipate beyond the second parity. Moreover, we find that marriage at 18 or later positively influence women’s preference for family’s sex composition. However, whether or not a woman married early or late does little to modify the male gender bias prevalent in parental investment. In light of these findings, we suggest policy measures that could help improve gender equity in the country

Test bias within the field of psychometrics is an issue of concern in the South African context. Bias refers to whether a test measures what it claims to measure across different groups. In South Africa, psychological testing has been associated with the oppressive and discriminatory practices of the Apartheid era, leading to many tests being banned and considered invalid and unfair (Foxcroft & Roodt, 2004). Research is required in South Africa to investigate the effects and functions of psychometric tests in the context of the country’s history and diverse population groups. This research investigated whether the Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM) is a good measure of non-verbal intelligence for high school children in the South African context, or whether it is biased by language and gender among Grade 8 and Grade 9 learners. The subjects were between 13 and 15 years old and attended an English medium government high school in Johannesburg. The archival data was collected over a two year period and the SPM was administered to some subjects in both Grade 8 and 9. A 2-way ANOVA tested for an overall difference on the SPM scores between learners who spoke English as a first language (EFL) and English as an additional language (EAL), as well as the performance of Male and Female learners. There was a significant difference between the language groups in Grade 8 but not Grade 9. There were no significant gender differences. An item analysis tested for a language or gender difference on the item level. Certain test items showed a gender difference while others a language difference, but no significant trend was found across the test. A matched paired t-test for the group that received the test in both Grade 8 and 9 determined that there was a significant increase in scores with greatest gains for the Male and Female EAL learners.

Annotation:
Increasing focus is being placed on fair assessment practices in South Africa. Most psychological tests used in this country were designed and developed in other countries. Research has shown that when using these tests on a different target population, it is important to determine the suitability of the test for that population. This involves investigating reliability, validity and possible sources of bias. It is equally important to have local normative data with which scores can be compared and interpreted. Research in this area has been limited. The purpose of this study was to undertake such research by evaluating a widely used test, the Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices (RCPM), and its existing norms, for Zulu children in South Africa. The study also aimed to provide raw data, which could be used to assist with the compilation of local norms. The test was administered to a convenience sample of 522 primary school children between the ages of 5 and 12 years old. The sample was divided into two groups to represent two different geographical locations: rural and urban. The sample consisted of 284 rural children and 237 urban children. There were 263 males and 259 females in the sample. Findings indicated good test reliability for this sample. Test validity however could not be confirmed as possible sources of bias at the content and item levels were shown. Age had a significant effect on performance, but level of education appeared to be the strongest predictor of performance on the RCPM for this sample. Significant gender differences were found. There was a tendency for males to outperform females on the test. Location had a significant effect on scores, where urban children performed better than rural children. Comparison of Zulu sample scores with those produced by the British standardisation sample, revealed a large discrepancy in performance between the two different cultural groups. The Zulu sample mean scores were significantly lower than the British mean scores. These findings highlight the need for locally developed normative data. The validity of the test for the sample requires further investigation. Results indicate that test adaptation may be required for Zulu children.

Oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most frequently occurring cancers in South Africa, with its highest incidence observed in South African black males. More efficient anticancer drugs are currently being researched with the aim of discovering new compounds that will aid in the treatment of cancer. 2-Methoxyestradiol (2ME2) is a naturally occurring estradiol metabolite currently undergoing human clinical trials. 2ME2 exerts antitumour, antiangionenic and apoptotic effects both in vitro and in vivo. However, due to its limited bioavailability, analogues are being synthesized and tested in an attempt to improve this shortcoming. 2-Methoxyestradiol-bis-sulphamate (2-MeOE2bisMATE) is a bis-sulphamoylated derivative of 2ME2. 2-MeOE2bisMATE has antiproliferative effects both in vitro and in vivo. Although 2-MeOE2bisMATE is a potential anticancer drug the exact action mechanism of this compound is still unidentified. In this study the in vitro effects of 2-MeOE2bisMATE on cell growth, morphology, cell cycle progression, as well as its potential to induce certain types of cell death and cytotoxicity in the oesophageal carcinoma (SNO) cell line were investigated. Cell number determination studies revealed that 0.4µM of 2-MeOE2bisMATE significantly inhibited growth of SNO cells after 24 hours of exposure. Morphological studies demonstrated hallmarks of both apoptosis and autophagy such as chromatin condensation, membrane blebbing, apoptotic bodies and increased presence of autophagosomes. In addition, immunofluorescence indicated microtubule network disruption in 2-MeOE2bisMATE-treated cells when compared to vehicle-treated control cells. Fluorescent microscopy revealed that both apoptosis and autophagy were induced in SNO cells after 24 hours of exposure to 0.4µM 2-MeOE2bisMATE. Cell cycle progression analysis revealed an increase in the number of cells in the G2/M phase, as well as in the sub-G1 fraction (indicating the presence of apoptosis) of 2-MeOE2bisMATE-treated cells. The annexin V-FITC assay verified the induction of apoptosis by 2-MeOE2bisMATE. An increase in the number of cells with reduced mitochondrial membrane potential and an increased caspase 6 activity were observed in 2-MeOE2bisMATE-treated cells. Autophagy induction was confirmed by flow cytometry using cyto-ID detection and the conjugated rabbit polyclonal anti-LC3B antibody assays. This in vitro study demonstrated new insights to the action mechanism of 2-MeOE2bisMATE in oesophageal carcinoma (SNO) cells, since these activities have not been studied in oesophageal carcinoma cells up to date. Future studies are warranted to further determine which gene and protein expression changes are induced by 2-MeOE2bisMATE in SNO cells.

This chapter argues that when it comes to evaluating social institutions, Adam Smith is a particular kind of consequentialist, one who favors the welfare of the working poor. This is illustrated by way of first, the so-called real price, Smith’s central measure of welfare in the Wealth of Nations, and, second, Smith’s proposed progressive tax regime. The chapter also argues that Smith’s consequentialism should be distinguished from utilitarianism. The chapter then turns to a consideration of what might explain Smith’s theoretical bias toward the working poor. It closes with a discussion of the principles that, according to Smith, govern the duties of the legislator and an analysis of Smith’s account of liberty.

This introductory chapter focuses on the progressive potential of empathetic feeling to redress a scholarly bias against compassion, empathy, and sympathy, particularly in American studies. Rather than viewing empathy as a “passive ideal” and an impediment to political change, the chapter argues that it is an active cognitive process that can play an important role in changing attitudes and self-perception or even catalyzing action. Tying in with this volume's overall response to critics who believe that the forces of commodification render cultural consumption a tainted vehicle for cross-racial understanding, the chapter argues against a too-hasty dismissal of white consumption of black cultural texts as a potential conduit for social change. In addition, the chapter also discusses multiplex subjectivity and the insider–outsider debate as part of the book's broader ethnographic study.

Joint replacement is often considered the surgical treatment for patients with osteoarthritis (OA). However, several other surgical treatments, of which some are more frequently performed, have been advocated for patients with OA in order to relieve symptoms, stall progression, and avoid or postpone joint replacement. This chapter briefly describes the most common procedures such as knee and hip arthroscopy and knee and hip osteotomy. It also reviews the evidence for the efficacy of these treatments compared with non-surgical alternatives, which is frequently insufficient due to lack of controlled low-risk-of-bias studies. The risk of adverse events is also reported when data is available. Some of the more recent surgical techniques such as implantation of chondrocytes or stem cells are also described and discussed but their utility for treating osteoarthritis remains uncertain. There is a great need for continued innovation and development of surgical techniques for managing in particular the earlier stages of osteoarthritis. To reduce the risk of future costly failures, a stepwise introduction of new surgical procedures and devices must be encouraged.

Investment treaties grant special international protection to foreign investors, and give them a means to enforce those rights against States in which they have invested. This book examines systematically the law of international investment treaties. Although the precise provisions of investment treaties are not uniform, virtually all investment treaties address the same issues. This book examines those issues in detail, including the scope of application, conditions for the entry of foreign investment, and general standards of treatment of foreign investments. Investment treaty law has continued to evolve rapidly and dramatically since publication of the second edition of this work in 2015. The field has seen considerable growth in the number and scope of investment treaties, now estimated at 3300, and investor-state arbitrations cases, which reached over 1000 in 2020. Beyond growth, the field has also experienced significant changes and reforms. In 2018, eleven Pacific Basin Countries, despite the withdrawal of the United States, forged ahead to conclude the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTTP), a potentially far reaching regional trade and investment agreement. The next year, the three north American nations replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). And in 2020, European Union member states terminated over 100 intra-EU BITs, leaving intra-EU investors to rely on EU law and legal processes alone for protection from unfavourable government acts. This edition incorporates a consideration of all of these and other reforms into its analysis of the body of law created by investment treaties since World War II.

The incidence of radiation necrosis has increased secondary to combined modality therapy for brain tumors and stereotactic radiosurgery. The pathology of progressive brain radiation necrosis (RN) primarily includes inflammation and angiogenesis in which cytokines, chemokines, and vascular endothelial growth factors are upregulated. Combined multiparametric imaging, including lesional metabolism, spectroscopy, and blood flow, could enhance diagnostic accuracy compared with a single imaging study. Nevertheless, a substantial risk of bias restricts firm conclusions about the best imaging technique for diagnosing brain RN. Bevacizumab shows promising results of improving radiographic edema and post-gadolinium enhancement with associated symptomatic improvement. However, this was based on small double-blinded randomized controlled trials, which introduces a high risk of bias due to the small sample size despite the high-quality trial design. Edaravone combined with corticosteroids also resulted in a more significant reduction in radiographic edema than corticosteroids alone but had no impact on reducing the enhancing lesion. There is a great need for further prospective randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to treat brain RN.

This study investigated the definition and characteristics of Fencism using survey, quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The rational choice theory was the framework used in this study. Findings revealed that Fencism is a distinct political alignment and a manifestation of the rational choice theory. Yet there was no consensus on the definition owing to the irreconcilable ambiguity of remaining objective and but yet professing a bias.

Chapter 3 examines the ways in which Motley, alongside numerous black and nonblack artists and scholars, explored religious affiliation as an indicator of socioeconomic class. While Motley renders demonstrative forms of worship through genre scenes of modernist abbreviation and stereotypical figuration, two delicate portraits position his paternal grandmother and himself as contemplative Catholics surrounded by the accouterments of middle-class life. Analyzing Motley’s attention to religiosity alongside the appearance of demonstrative religion in works by Thomas Hart Benton and Jacob Lawrence, the chapter considers the ways in which artistic focus on religious practices spoke to the desire to preserve and respect indigenous customs, while also positioning them as possessing an emotional power at odds with a modern society deemed rational and progressive. The chapter thus considers how Motley contributes not only to an occasionally problematic articulation of Old and New Negroes, but also to a larger discussion of class, regional difference, and bias within American scene art.

Molly Youngkin’s essay investigates the heterosexism of a fin de siècle feminist newspaper, the Women’s Penny Paper (1894–99, later retitled the Women’s Herald and the Woman’s Signal), highlighting its treatment of three controversies: the Oscar Wilde trials, the death of poet Amy Levy, and the emergence of Sappho as a model of lesbian new womanhood. When the paper did address these controversies it ‘reshaped narratives about this [same-sex] desire to fit its own heterosexist agenda,’ responded in a disapproving way, or avoided a discussion of sexuality entirely (p. 543). The overall effect of this editorial bias was to pursue an ‘overarching agenda of advocating for heterosexual women’ and to reinforce social purity debates about ‘the effects of men’s sexual practices on heterosexual women and their families’ (p. 544). These feminist papers thus constructed the ‘other’ in ways that upheld restrictive conventions of race and sexuality while claiming to be vehicles of progressive thought.

Abstract: This chapter analyzes the reasons why people commit microaggressions and how they are maintained. Microaggressions are conceptualized as learned behaviors, taught through observational learning and other social mechanisms from an early age. The impact of implicit bias is that Whites are implicitly taught they are a superior race, even though explicitly they may be instructed otherwise. As a result, their actions or inactions continue to promote racism in subtle, microaggressive ways. Aversive racism differs from blatant, old-fashioned racism, and it characterizes the racial attitudes of most well-educated and progressive White Americans. Aversive racists outwardly endorse fair and just treatment of all groups yet harbor feelings of discomfort toward people of color that may be unconscious. Microaggressions can also occur in the form of avoidance and inaction. Because biased socialization practices and interracial interactions put people at risk of committing microaggressions, some individuals find themselves avoiding people of color altogether and thus having little interaction with them. Microaggressions persist because the underlying cause of these behaviors (racism) reinforces social inequalities and hierarchies that are desirable to the in-group. Finally, people of color can and do commit microaggressions against each other; however, this occurs under an umbrella of White racial supremacy.

Annotation:
Familial dysautonomia (FD, Riley-Day syndrome, hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type III) can be considered a genetic model for understanding how perturbations in the autonomic nervous system and the sensory system can compromise cognition and alter behavior. Even in the original description of FD, the psychological and behavioral aspects of the disorder were attributed to central autonomic dysfunction (Riley et al. 1949). Five children with “central autonomic dysfunction with defective lacrimation” were described as exhibiting “undue reaction to mild anxiety” associated with physical manifestations of excessive sweating and salivation, red blotching of the skin, and transient but marked arterial hypertension. In addition, all the children had “constantly diminished production of tears.” Thus, from its earliest description it was appreciated that FD represented a disorder in which central, as well as peripheral, disturbance of autonomic function was associated with changes in behavior. Familial dysautonomias’ impact on cognitive functioning, however, was not immediately apparent. Although intelligence has been reported to be generally within the normal range (Welton et al. 1979), many patients exhibit delays in social, emotional, and/or cognitive domains, which for some patients is quite extreme. As survival has improved for the FD population (Axelrod et al. 2002), an adult FD population has evolved and progressive degeneration has been appreciated both clinically (Axelrod et al. 1981) and neuropathologically (Pearson, Axelrod, and Dancis 1974). In addition, the progressive nature of the disorder appears to include neuropsychological issues as patients report difficulty concentrating (Welton et al. 1979), depression, anxiety, and even phobias (Clayson, Welton, and Axelrod 1980). Thus, in FD the autonomic and sensory nervous systems appear to play a role in the development of normal cognition and behavior, as well as in sustaining homeostasis of these functions. Familial dysautonomia is a recessive disorder caused by IKBKAP gene mutations with a carrier rate as high as one in 27 in the Ashkenazi Jewish population (Anderson et al. 2001; Slaugenhaupt et al. 2001). Prior to identification of the gene in 2001, diagnosis was based on clinical criteria utilizing the ethnic bias for this disorder, as well as on a constellation of signs attributed to sensory and autonomic dysfunctions (Axelrod 2004; Axelrod 2007).

Annotation:
In the preceding chapters we have built up the premises of an argument concerning morphogenesis and evolution. These are as follows: 1.Evolution occurs through processes of introduction and sorting of variation. 2.In a genealogical hierarchy, introduction and sorting of variation can occur at a series of focal levels and it is a property of the hierarchy that there is upward and downward causation between focal levels. 3.The crucial role of developmental processes with respect to evolutionary mechanisms is in the causation of new phenotypes. Phenotypes are always expressed in individual organisms, but the properties of other focal levels in the genealogical hierarchy must also be considered. 4.Development is also essentially hierarchical, involving processes acting at different focal levels. Each level is defined as the place where new gene expression occurs. For simplicity we can divide its hierarchy into stages from early pattern formation to late cytodifferentiation, each including unknown (but very large) numbers of phases of new gene expression. It must be noted that ontogeny of a given individual or given taxon represents a route through the basic hierarchy of developmental stages that, through historical accident or selective bias, may be extremely convoluted and unpredictable. 5.In the systematics of any group, there is a general correlation between taxonomic rank and different grades or ranks of morphological characters. There is a series of levels or grades of generality of phenotypic characters caused at different levels of the morphogenetic hierarchy. 6.The morphogenetic hierarchy that produces the different grades of phenotypic morphology can potentially involve upward but little if any downward causation. 7.The course of evolution appears principally to produce clusters of evolutionarily equivalent species rather than lines of progressive change. At any taxonomic level, diversification within a group has therefore to be distinguished from those rarer phases of progressive evolution leading to establishment of new groups. The two involve quite different processes because they involve the morphogenetic causation of different levels of morphological characters. 8.Phenotypic characters may occur in groups that are linked both in the sense of functional integration of the phenotype itself and/or by virtue of the integration and interdependency of developmental pathways in morphogenesis.

The paper aims to analyse three questions which arise naturally in examining India’s closer engagement with the world economy in the last two decades. First, how has it evolved and what is its extent? Second, what is its impact on India? Third, what is its impact on the world? Evolution and Extent: For four decades after independence, India’s economic policies had a marked autarkic bias and by 1990 it had become one of the most closed economies in the world. A major goal of the historic reforms launched in 1991 was to reintegrate the country into the global economy, and there has been a progressive move in this direction Effect on India: In post-independent India, many sceptical voices made dire predictions about the effects of opening up, such as deindustrialisation and destabilisation of the economy, and impoverishment of the people. After opening-up, these alarming prophecies did not materialise. Undesirable features of India’s development, such as inadequate poverty alleviation despite rapid growth, have domestic causes and are not the result of globalisation. Effect on the World: India’s effect on the world economy is growing but has to be seen in the context of China’s simultaneous rapid rise. It is very likely that on all the major contentious global economic issues such as exchange rate coordination, trade liberalisation, and climate change mitigation, global action will have to involve the participation of China and India. For good or ill, China and India will matter in the 21st century both for each other and for the world.

Vehicle re-identification (reID) aims at identifying vehicles across different non-overlapping cameras views. The existing methods heavily relied on well-labeled datasets for ideal performance, which inevitably causes fateful drop due to the severe domain bias between the training domain and the real-world scenes; worse still, these approaches required full annotations, which is labor-consuming. To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel Progressive Adaptation Learning method for vehicle reID, named PAL, which infers from the abundant data without annotations. For PAL, a data adaptation module is employed for source domain, which generates the images with similar data distribution to unlabeled target domain as “pseudo target samples”. These pseudo samples are combined with the unlabeled samples that are selected by a dynamic sampling strategy to make training faster. We further proposed a weighted label smoothing (WLS) loss, which considers the similarity between samples with different clusters to balance the confidence of pseudo labels. Comprehensive experimental results validate the advantages of PAL on both VehicleID and VeRi-776 dataset.

The life of valves is extremely important for the availability of hyper-compressors in LDPE plants. The valves operate due to the action of the differential pressure across a moving element, typically with a poppet shape, and close due to the action of dedicated counteracting springs housed into the same valves. A proper design of the spring is a balance between ensuring the “on time” opening/closure of the valve, a low impact velocity of the poppet and low fluttering. Particular attention shall be paid to the dynamic behavior avoiding to excite the spring and poppet-spring system close to themselves resonance frequencies. Different factors such unexpected transient conditions or vortex shedding phenomena could shorten the life of valves springs and valves bodies, since the valve spring is forced to operate out of the design conditions. A compressor application presenting evidence of spring surge phenomena (resonance of spring itself) is presented. Frequencies exciting spring natural modes frequencies can be introduced in the process gas by vortex shedding generated along the gas outflow through the valve during the transient conditions or in regime conditions. Since the vortex shedding frequency predictability is affected by some bias inaccuracy level coming from process variability and model approximation, then a robust design approach is to employ progressive spring that is insensitive to surge phenomena. This paper gives an overview of progressive and non-linear springs and the benefits they offer compared to linear springs and how progressive springs has to be designed for hyper-compressor valves application. Several spring designs are analyzed with a simplified prediction model, the results (load deflection, stiffness, natural frequencies, fatigue lives) are then compared with finite element analysis and bench tests results using a specifically developed test bench allowing to measure spring natural frequencies and to conduct accelerated fatigue testing.

Multi-perforated liners, commonly employed in Gas Turbine combustors as cooling devices to control metal temperature, are recognized as very effective sound absorbers. Thus, in the innovative lean combustion technology, where the onset of thermoacoustic instabilities represents one of the most important issue, the multi-perforated plates can be exploited both for wall cooling and damping combustion instabilities. As a first step of a large experimental and numerical research program regarding multi-perforated liners, an investigation of different numerical methodologies to analyze acoustic damping is here reported. In particular three different numerical techniques to evaluate planar waves sound absorption of perforated plates are presented and validated with literature test cases. A quasi 1-D code, implementing the wall compliance concept, provides results for a large set of geometric and fluidynamic conditions. A large test matrix was investigated varying perforation hole angle and diameter with different overall porosities. The effect of bias and grazing flows Mach number was tested as well. A subset of considered geometries were then supported by a full reconstruction of the unsteady pressure field by means of a Large Eddy Simulation computed with an open-source code. Non-reflective boundaries with forcing term provide the wave to acoustically excite the perforated plate. Multi-microphone postprocessing technique allowed the reconstruction of a progressive and regressive planar wave to compute the reflection coefficient. All results were cross-checked with a Finite Element Model, able to solve the wave equation in the frequency domain with a background velocity field.

Deep supervised hashing has become an active topic in information retrieval. It generates hashing bits by the output neurons of a deep hashing network. During binary discretization, there often exists much redundancy between hashing bits that degenerates retrieval performance in terms of both storage and accuracy. This paper proposes a simple yet effective Neurons Merging Layer (NMLayer) for deep supervised hashing. A graph is constructed to represent the redundancy relationship between hashing bits that is used to guide the learning of a hashing network. Specifically, it is dynamically learned by a novel mechanism defined in our active and frozen phases. According to the learned relationship, the NMLayer merges the redundant neurons together to balance the importance of each output neuron. Moreover, multiple NMLayers are progressively trained for a deep hashing network to learn a more compact hashing code from a long redundant code. Extensive experiments on four datasets demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art hashing methods.
