Roller linear guides are key components in machine tool. The accuracy and efficiency of a machine toll are determined by the stiffness and friction torque of roller guide. This study proposes an improved design method for roller guide. The influences of the rollers profile on stiffness, stress distribution of roller linear guide are analyzed using finite element simulation. In this work, the design of the roller, slider, and the overall structure is modified. Moreover, experimental investigations on noise and sliding friction of roller linear guide are compared to validate the proposed design method. It seems that the proposed design can improve the dynamical performance of the roller linear guide.

Based on the geometric and kinematic relationship between the spiral guide rollers rib and the grinding wheel in the rib grinding with the special machine, the ribs shape surface after grinding was analysised, and the equations for the ground rib axial profile were established. Numerical analysis was conducted in an example, and the results show that the ground rib axial profile is approximately linear in most region, but seriously nonlinear in the root region of about 0.5mm height, and the profile inclination direction changes when the vertical angle of grinding wheel head is less than a value which is slightly less than the helix angle of the guide roller.

In traditional studies of linear motion roller guide, the static stiffness is a main indicator to evaluate the mechanical behavior. However, the local contact profile between the roller and raceway surface, although very important to the precision maintenance, cannot be reflected in the measured value of static stiffness. In this article, a new indicator, named the real contact total length (RCTL), is proposed based on the Greenwood–Williamson model and the Hertz contact theory. In particular, an electric contact model is presented where the RCTL of linear motion roller guide without preload is expressed in terms of the measured electric resistances. To verify the model, an experiment is conducted to measure the electric resistances under different vertical loads by a designed load test bench and a digital, direct-current, high-resolution electric resistance meter (DRRM). The test results show good agreement with the model. Based on the electric contact model, the main parameters that affect the RCTL value are roughness Ra and the length of roller, which are directly related to the mechanical behavior of linear motion roller guide in the design and manufacture stages.

The mechanism of the position-mode side guide in correcting slab centerline profile and camber in the roughing process of a hot strip mill (HSM) was analyzed using finite element simulation. The finite element model was established based on the actual size of the roughing mill and on the actual actuating time sequence of the roughing mill in China Steel Corporation (CSC), Kaohsiung. This work could be the first to give an insight into the mechanism of side guides in correcting the slab camber. Time sequence analysis was explored to visualize the progress of centerline profile variation and the interaction between the slab and the related roughing mill components at different moments. The history of reaction forces exerted on the slab was analyzed to explain the interaction between roughing mill components and the slab. The effect of the separation distance of side guide and the effect of the slab wedge on the centerline profile was investigated. A schematic model illustrating the reactions and the resulting moments exerted on the slab was created. By examining the force history, the cross-sectional strain/stress distribution, and the roll force across the horizontal roller, the correcting mechanism of the side guide could be elucidated. The simulation results provide further knowledge in selection and dimension design of side guide to improve the effectiveness of side guide in correcting the slab profile.

This paper focuses on the twist defects and the control strategy in the process of four-roll bending for aluminum alloy Z-section profiles with large cross-section. A 3D finite element model (3D-FEM) of roll bending process has been developed, on the premise of the curvature radius of the profile, the particularly pronounced twist defects characteristic of 7075-O aluminum alloy Z-section profiles were studied by FE method. The simulation results showed that the effective control of the twist defects of the profile could be realized by adjusting the side roller so that the exit guide roll was higher than the entrance one (the side rolls presented an asymmetric loading mode with respect to the main rolls) and increasing the radius of upper roll. Corresponding experimental tests were carried out to verify the accuracy of the numerical analysis. The experimental results indicated that control strategies based on finite element analysis (FEA) had a significant inhibitory function on twist defects in the actual roll bending process.

The article is devoted to the analysis of design features and operating conditions of V-belt trans-missions of agricultural machinery. When designing these gears, it is recommended to give prefer-ence to gears made according to an open circuit or with a tension roller located outside the belt con-tour, to avoid cross and semi-cross gears, as well as multi-pulley gears with crossing shaft axles. To make the wider use of more progressive types of belts. It was shown that the features of V-belt transmissions of agricultural machinery require clarification of the methods for calculating trans-missions with progressive types of V-belts and automatic belt tensioning methods. It was noted that special attention should be paid to transmissions with multi-profile belts, which calculation has not been sufficiently reflected in domestic regulatory documents. The advantages of such belts are es-pecially noticeable under variable and shock loading. Based on the analysis, the recommendations for clarifying the calculation of belt drives with multi-profile belts were given. Analytical dependencies are proposed for determining the value of the nominal power transmitted by one belt (stream) of a multi-profile belt, allowing automation of the calculation of V-belt transmissions of agricultural machinery. For gears with a tension or guide roller that add an extra (sometimes reverse) bend of the belt, it is proposed to determine the coeffi-cient taking into account different degrees of bending on the pulleys according to a graph built tak-ing into account the linear hypothesis of summation of damages. It is recommended to calculate gears with spring-loaded tensioning rollers and design tensioning devices for such transmissions using a special method that takes into account the belt tensioning method. At the same time, the required value of the pre-tension of the belt can be significantly re-duced, which will have a positive effect on its resource, without losing the traction capacity of the transmission itself. Expressions are given for finding the value of the pre-tension of belts, both for gears with tension due to the elasticity of the belt, and for gears with spring-loaded tension rollers. Conclusions and directions for further research are formulated.

This paper presents a novel five degrees-of-freedom model for the static analysis of linear roller bearings subjected to external loading. In this study, first, a rigid analytical model was developed to obtain the roller contact loads and displacements of carriage caused by the elastic deformation at the roller–carriage and roller–rail contacts. The non-Hertzian contact loads between the rollers and raceways were utilized to consider the profiled roller and/or profiled guide rail. Next, the structural deformations of the carriage owing to the contact loads were computed using the finite element method. The associated displacements of the carriage top were derived systematically. Then, the total displacements of the carriage top were obtained by summing the displacements estimated from the rigid model and the induced structural displacements obtained by finite element method. The proposed model was validated by comparing the calculated displacements of the carriage with those from a commercial program under various loading conditions. Further investigation regarding the effect of preload on displacements of the linear roller bearing was conducted. The simulation results showed the dependence of carriage rigidity and internal load distribution on the linear roller bearing characteristics.

This article focuses on a number of developments that have made the place of Graeco-Roman medicine in surveys of the history of medicine. A further development discussed is that medical history now also prominently includes the topic of health, both physical and mental health and related topics such as lifestyle, quality of life, well-being, fitness, and ‘flourishing’. It identifies a number of different mental states or conditions on a scale from an optimum to a pessimum, and thus presents a good example of the scalar, gradualist view of health characteristic of Greek medicine. This article shows philosophy competing with medicine for the role of authoritative guide to health, mental as well as physical, and diagnostic as well as therapeutic. The study of Graeco-Roman medicine has profited significantly from connections and comparisons with the study of the history of medicine, science, and culture from other time frames and other parts of the world.

Biomarkers support clinical practice in almost every area of medicine and are increasingly used in the assessment of brain diseases. Their role in the diagnosis of dementia is covered in this chapter. Structural neuroimaging should be considered in all patients with suspected dementia. Functional imaging offers additional insights into the biological activity of the brain, providing estimates of regional cerebral blood flow, glucose metabolism, dopamine neurotransmission, and amyloid burden. Certain dementias, notably Alzheimer’s disease, also have a characteristic profile of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers. The diagnostic roles of these different biomarkers are explored to help guide their application in clinical practice.

This chapter addresses several interrelated ways in which other people are implicated in the development, sustenance, and disruption of the modal structure of intentionality. It first considers some of the roles that relations with others play in shaping perceptual experience, focusing on how the cohesive, anticipatory structure of perceptual experience is interpersonally regulated. After that, it turns to belief, arguing that the structure of belief, the intelligibility of the distinction between what is and is not the case, rests on a more primitive sense of certainty. It then proceeds to develop a more general account of how the sense of being in a given type of intentional state is largely attributable to its distinctive anticipation-fulfilment profile. All such profiles, it is argued, depend on an overarching pattern of anticipation and fulfilment, in the guise of habitual confidence or certainty. This pattern is inextricable from a certain way of experiencing and relating to other people in general. When the overall anticipation-fulfilment structure of experience is disrupted, the boundaries between intentional state types become less clear. This renders a person susceptible to more pronounced and localized disruptions, of the kind involved in many delusions and hallucinations.

Concomitant with the explosive development and progress made in the field of molecular biology, initiated by development and proof of the double helix structure of DNA some 40 years ago, there has been a much more subdued, but equally exciting and important, development in the area of signal transduction (Nishizuka, 1992; Berridge, 1984; Exton, 1990). What makes the latter subject so enchanting to biochemists is the finding that membrane phospholipids are intimately involved in the transduction process. Interestingly, the potential role of phospholipids in the signal transduction pathway was formulated some 40 years ago also. (Perhaps all great discoveries occur in 40 year cycles.) In any event the first hint of any possible involvement of phospholipids in cellular stimulus responses was gained from the work of Hokin and Hokin, which first appeared in 1953. In this classic paper, these investigators reported that treatment of pigeon pancreas slices with acetylcholine or carbamylcholine (cholinergic drugs) resulted not only in the secretion of amylases but also in the turnover of two specific membrane phospholipids, namely, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidic acid. While the entire process of stimulus response in a mammalian cell is now much more complicated, nevertheless the findings by Hokin and Hokin were of major importance in the maturation of this field. Unfortunately, the impact of the Hokins’ observations was not immmediately felt. At that point in time, phospholipids were viewed mainly as semipermeable membrane structures whose main function was to regulate the ion content of the cell. In addition, another deterrent was the limited information on the chemical structure of the mammalian cell phospholipids. Hence there was a hiatus of many years in which low-profile lipid chemists and biochemists labored to solve the chemical nature of membrane lipids and to deduce their physical arrangement in the cell. Then in 1975, Michell published a key paper (Michell, 1975) in which he noted the importance of the inositol-containing phospholipids in the membrane process known as calcium gating. This paper initiated what can be called the “PI” era, which is still very much alive and well today.

It tries to make sense of the various religious symbols and their supporting discourses, which have shaped and legitimized the world view and ethos of the Charismatics. For this purpose, it draws from the work of Geertz on religion as a cultural system of symbols that shapes and constitutes reality, seen in the light of Asad’s criticisms concerning the role of power. Drawing from Bourdieu’s idea of habitus, it also analyses the underlying Charismatic habitus that guides individual believers to understand and respond to the social reality around them. Additionally, various conceptions of the sacred and profane are explored, drawing from the works of Durkheim, Eliade, and others.

Although there is good evidence that irrigation played an important role in Roman agriculture, it has so far received too little attention. This paper seeks to address the subject of its funding at different scales. Among the different choices landholders had to make, investments in hydraulic infrastructure were guided by their particular needs for cultivation and breeding, the environmental context, and the management of a natural and sometimes limited resource. The attention is here turned towards the financial, human, and material nature of the investment required. The cross-reading of archaeological sources with literary and legal texts shows that the costs of irrigation in single estates varied according to the technical constraints (length and construction of the conduit, necessity to store water, etc.), but the efforts made to invest also reflect the profits expected. A key element concerning investments towards irrigation, in any case, lies in the access to water. In that respect, Roman law played an essential role through servitude rights.

In Latin America the relationships between technological innovation and inclusive development have been stabilised into research and policy agendas. However, conventional understandings of what constitutes innovation still guide practices that are embedded in Science and Technology Policy. This chapter aims at providing a reconceptualisation of the notion of the innovation and production system. In particular, the chapter utilises theoretical perspectives to position worker cooperatives as actors providing dynamism to innovation and social development processes, and argues that a shift in focus towards worker cooperatives could have the potential to set in motion a series of dynamics of learning, knowledge sharing, and techno-productive capability generation which would entail new socio-technical alliances oriented to more democratic processes of knowledge acquisition. It presents a brief review of the economic literature on the role of the company in terms of innovation, followed by a critical analysis of those principles. The chapter provides an explanation of the systemic implications of an innovation and production system focused on the profit-maximizing company vis-à-vis one focused on worker cooperatives. It closes with a series of reflections on STI public policies aimed at inclusive development.

This chapter explains how and why healthcare might profit from a normative practice approach (NPA). This approach sketches a conceptual and normative framework that helps to locate and identify relevant points of view for clinical practice as well as for policy making in healthcare. The chapter starts in medias res: in the consulting room, in the encounter between clinician and patient. What kinds of relations are relevant for the understanding of what is going in the patient who feels ill and between the patient and the doctor (or nurse)? Are there normative principles and values which guide these relationships? The focus then broadens to the meso- and macro-contexts of current medicine and healthcare. The NPA will be re-introduced. Its relevance is shown for topics like the increase in the administrative burden in medicine, the role of expert knowledge, the hospital and its purposes, and the changing focus of medicine given the rapid changes in the macro-sphere. The chapter ends by saying that the NPA may help in different ways: by taking it as a point of reference; by relating the different normative dimensions to core responsibilities of doctors, other employees, and stakeholders beside medical professionals; and by relating these core responsibilities to the relevant contexts in which these doctors, other employees, and stakeholders are working.

Annotation:
The field of fungal diagnostics encompasses tests that are performed to help diagnose fungal disease, guide its management, and or monitor the effectiveness of its treatment. For some superficial skin and yeast infections, a clinical examination of the patient combined with microscopic examination of the sample may be sufficient to determine that fungal disease is present, even if the specific fungal pathogen is not identified. For deep- seated and systemic infections, a combination of diagnostic tests may be required in order to obtain a definitive diagnosis. These include microscopy to detect fungal elements, culture, detection of circulating antigens and antibodies, and molecular tests. More recently, molecular and proteomic approaches have increasingly dominated the conventional identification of pathogenic yeasts and, to some extent, filamentous fungi, since traditional methods are time consuming. More importantly, conventional methodologies have failed to identify common organisms that display uncharacteristic profiles, or fungal pathogens that are rarely encountered. The ‘gold standard’ for the definitive diagnosis of fungal disease is histology or culture of the fungal pathogen from a clinical specimen. A specimen will routinely be inoculated onto several different types of media, and then incubated at specific conditions and temperatures for up to twenty-one days. Media plates will be examined periodically for growth, and staff will try to identify the fungus using both macroscopic and microscopic morphologies. The few biochemical tests available, e.g. the urease test, can be helpful in identification, most often for yeast species. Microscopy of fungal isolates, histopathological examination of tissue, and fungal specific stains play fundamental roles in the diagnosis of infection for the variety of fungi that cause disease. The most common stain for identifying fungal elements from a cultured isolate is lactophenol fuschin/aniline blue stain. Figure 10.1 depicts the fruiting body (conidiophore) of Aspergillus fumigatus species complex, the most prevalent fungal species responsible for invasive aspergillosis (IA) in severely immunocompromised individuals. Figure 10.2 illustrates the phenotype of a three-day old colony. Serological tests are beneficial when non-culture based diagnosis of fungal disease is required. Complement fixation is predominantly used to diagnose endemic mycoses, e.g. coccidioidomycosis, blastomycosis, and histoplasmosis.

A reduction of CO2 emissions of aero engines can only be achieved by a reduction in the fuel consumption. For turbofan engines a major key for this is an increase in the engine bypass ratio to enhance the propulsive efficiency. This leads to an increased mass flow in the bypass duct and hence higher contributions of the bypass duct system to the flow pressure losses and hence the engine fuel consumption. Additionally the turbofan core engine gets smaller in size and the overall diameter of the engine increases. This requires advanced engine mounting concepts, such as core mounted subsystems, which influence the arrangement and the mechanical and aerodynamic design of components in the bypass duct such as fan outlet guide vane, struts, fairings or bifurcations. This requires an optimized design of the turbofan bypass system with regards to structural, aerodynamic and acoustic criteria. The topology of the bypass duct as well as the position and the design of the individual components have a significant impact on the weight, the efficiency and the noise radiation of the engine and hence need to be investigated in a systematic approach. Such a design approach was developed in the R&T project OPAL, led by Rolls-Royce Deutschland and funded by the German Federal State of Brandenburg. The design approach covers the following steps: - Optimization of the bypass duct shape with regards to minimum pressure loss taking into consideration the mechanical requirements of an engine with core mounted subsystems. - Optimization of strut, fairing and bifurcation shapes with regards to minimum pressure loss, robustness against flow deviations and minimized upstream flow effects taking into consideration structural and mechanical requirements by engine loads and subsystem routings. - Optimization of fan outlet guide vane profile and plan form shape with regards to minimum pressure losses and maximum working range taking into consideration structural and acoustic constraints. - Optimization of fan-outlet guide vane, strut and bifurcation interaction with regards to minimum pressure losses and maximized aerodynamic stability of the fan and outlet guide vanes. The current paper will present the design approach, the optimization processes and the results of the optimization of the turbofan bypass duct system for the application on modern high-bypass ratio aero engines.

During the optimization of the TP400D6 engine (powering the A400M military transport aircraft), the mechanical design of the Front Bearing Structure has proven to be one of the most challenging topics in the engine development programme. One of the leading technical subjects has been the design and optimization of the thermal anti-icing system of the component. When non-specific icing simulation software tools are available, the effect of the water impingement and runback water is difficult to simulate. The objective of this paper is to show one particular aspect learnt during the design and development phase of the project: the evaluation of the error obtained in the calculation of metal temperatures on an antiiced airfoil surface due to the effect of water impingement and runback water. TP400D6 engine front end arrangement consists of a single radial structure after the engine air intake performing both the structural and aerodynamic function, transmitting bearing and high propeller loads and being the compressor IGVs. The anti-icing system employs hot compressor bleed air circulating internally in the component through a series of internal channels and passages and exiting the airfoil through trailing edge holes. Due to airfoil aerodynamic constraints and material selection, it was realised in the earlier stages of the project that it was not possible to heat the whole vane profile up to the trailing edge. In consequence, the effects of the impingement water and runback of non-evaporated water from the intake and the IGV leading edge itself, play a key role on the determination of the airfoil surface temperature and potential ice accretion. Because of not having a specific icing simulation software, water impingement and runback water effects cannot be predicted with sufficient accuracy. During the engine programme’s development phase, a dedicated component antiicing rig test was conducted in order to evaluate and obtain a closer approximation of the real behaviour of the system. The scope of this paper is to go through the details of the aforementioned effect of icing water on airfoil surface temperature, focusing on the discrepancies between predicted temperatures and test rig measured temperatures. Typical thermal modelling is used, which incorporates the best possible understanding of the water particle impingement pattern onto the airfoils and flow lines distribution around the IGV profiles. Results from the rig test have been applied to the traditional thermal model in order to improve the thermal prediction simulation and understanding of the component.

The unsteady heat transfer measurements about a transonic turbine blade at engine representative Mach and Reynolds numbers are presented. High density, fast response thin film gauges are employed at the mid-height streamline. A description of the novel development of gold gauges together with a brief overview of their calibration and signal processing is presented. Detailed time and phase-averaged measurements have been obtained, providing insight into the role of upstream nozzle guide vane wakes and shock features. These heat transfer results compliment recent fast-response aerodynamic results on this and similar transonic profiles, which highlight the dominance of the upstream vane-rotor interaction over convected wake segments, particularly in light of unsteady turbine blade loading. From a heat transfer standpoint however, whilst the periodic shock events contributed to abrupt, localized heat transfer enhancements, the influence of NGV wake segments on the boundary layer could not be discounted when duration of unsteadiness was considered.

Performance Testing is essential to ensure the quality and scalability of Web applications. A well-defined process may guide Performance Testing Engineer in conducting this task. We intended to enlighten some major inputs related to web performance testing. For this, we have formulated and executed a given protocol, according to the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) protocol in Software Engineering. So, 37 papers were selected/analyzed and we have extracted their most relevant contribution in order to answer our research questions. This analysis enabled us discovering preeminent performance testing profiles/roles, approaches, artifacts, methods, stages or phases and activity flows that have been reported in the literature. We believe that, despite those several studies that mapping performance test context, there are a few remarks in which a clarification might be needed, once there is no well-established process that comprises the whole activities mapped as well as established a relation with other studies. Therefore, this study intends to provide relevant input that one may establish a novel web performance testing process.

Aircraft gas turbine engines require compression systems with high performance and low weight and cost. There is therefore a continuing drive to increase compressor stage pressure ratios, particularly for military fans. To meet this need, a technology acquisition programme has been carried out by QinetiQ and Rolls-Royce. Firstly, the stage matching issues for an advanced two-stage military fan were investigated, including the effects of employing variable inlet guide vanes. From this, the requirements for the first stage together with key operating conditions for the blading were defined. The blade profiles were then designed to satisfy the range of aerodynamic conditions using a quasi-3D calculation system. A satisfactory compromise between the aerodynamic and mechanical design requirements was reached in which a blisk construction was employed for the rotor, machined from a single piece of titanium. The new stage was manufactured and tested successfully, and it achieved its target flow, pressure ratio and efficiency on the first build. Detailed measurements of the internal flows using laser anemometry and high response pressure transducers were taken. Finally, these data have been analysed and used to calibrate current 3D multi-row CFD methods.

An in-depth study of the business-IT interface produced numerous reasons why Information Technology (IT) solutions often do not meet the expectations of the business client. Major contributors towards the expectation gap are: Insufficient analysis of the business problem, bad user requirement specifications and documentation, ineffective communication and interpersonal relationship problems. All of these are the responsibility of the business- and/or systems analyst, who acts as a bridge between the IT function and the rest of the business. There is confusion about the title, role and required knowledge and skills of analysts. A formal ‘Body of Knowledge’ (BOK) can address the confusion in the ICT industry and guide higher education institutions to effectively prepare such employees for the industry. This article discusses the results of the initial phase of a joint research project by the Tshwane University of Technology and the Special Interest Group for Analysis in South Africa towards creating such an Analysis Body of Knowledge (ABOK). In this phase the need for a BOK was determined and the world of analysis in South Africa investigated to draw up a preliminary analysis profile. The plans for follow-up research to develop a comprehensive ABOK are also discussed.

This paper presents experimental measurements and computational predictions of surface and endwall heat transfer for a high-pressure (HP) nozzle guide vane (NGV) operating as part of a full HP turbine stage in an annular rotating turbine facility, with and without inlet temperature distortion (hot-streaks). A detailed aerodynamic survey of the vane surface is also presented. The test turbine was the unshrouded MT1 turbine, installed in the Turbine Test Facility (previously called Isentropic Light Piston Facility) at QinetiQ, Farnborough UK. This is a short duration facility, which simulates engine representative M, Re, non-dimensional speed and gas-to-wall temperature ratio at the turbine inlet. The facility has recently been upgraded to incorporate an advanced second-generation combustor simulator, capable of simulating well-defined, aggressive temperature profiles in both the radial and circumferential directions. This work forms part of the pan-European research programme, TATEF II. Measurements of HP vane and endwall heat transfer obtained with inlet temperature distortion are compared with results for uniform inlet conditions. Steady and unsteady CFD predictions have also been conducted on vane and endwall surfaces, using the Rolls-Royce CFD code HYDRA to complement the analysis of experimental results. The heat transfer measurements presented in this paper are the first of their kind in the respect that the temperature distortion is representative of an extreme cycle point measured in the engine situation, and was simulated with good periodicity and with well defined boundary conditions in the test turbine.

The Hiawatha Service is an Amtrak intercity passenger rail service operating a 90-mile route between Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois. The route has experienced a steady growth in ridership in recent years, carrying more than 815,000 passengers during the 12-month period ending September 2011. Owing to the route’s trip-time competitiveness with the automobile, frequent daily service, an intermodal connection with the airport in Milwaukee, and the multi-state funding partnership between the states of Wisconsin and Illinois, the Hiawatha Service is a model of how passenger rail can be an integral part of the multimodal transportation system in an intercity corridor. In January 2011, researchers from the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) passenger rail research group, with financial support from the University Transportation Center for Mobility (UTCM) and in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), initiated a research project to examine the mobility impacts of the Hiawatha Service intercity passenger rail route. One of the major elements of this research project was an on-board survey of Hiawatha Service passengers, implemented in Spring 2011. This paper reports a summary of selected findings from the 2011 TTI/WisDOT Hiawatha Service passenger survey. The survey obtained valuable information about the current passengers, including data on passenger trip purpose, activities before and after the rail trip, travel alternatives to the Hiawatha Service if the route was not available, motivations for choosing rail for the trip, the impact of potential service changes on increasing ridership, and demographic profile data. A majority of passengers traveling on weekdays were regular commuters or business travelers while personal trips are dominant on weekends. Nearly 70 percent of passengers would drive if the rail service was not available, suggesting that the Hiawatha Service plays a critical role in relieving highway congestion in the region. The results of this study can be used by public agency planning staff and policymakers to guide the development of new intercity passenger rail services in similar corridors across the U.S.

Abstract Performance and flow measurements are carried out to investigate the impact of varying the geometry of axial casing grooves on the stall margin and efficiency of an axial turbomachine. Prior studies have shown that skewed semi-circular grooves installed near the blade leading edge (LE) have multiple effects on the flow structure, including ingestion of the tip leakage vortex (TLV), suppression of backflow vortices, and periodic variations of flow angle. To determine which of these phenomena is a key contributor, the present study examines the impact of several grooves, all with the same inlet geometry, but with outlets aimed at different directions. The “U” grooves that have circumferential exits aimed against the direction of blade rotation achieve the highest stall margin improvement of well above 60% but cause a 2.0% efficiency loss near the best efficiency point (BEP). The “S” grooves, which have exits aimed with the blade rotation, achieve a relatively moderate stall margin improvement of 36%, but they do not reduce the BEP efficiency. Other grooves, which are aligned with and against the flow direction at the exit from upstream inlet guide vanes, achieve lower improvements. These trends suggest that causing high periodic variations in flow angle around the blade leading edge is particularly effective in extending the stall margin, but also reduces the peak efficiency. In contrast, maintaining low flow angles near the LE achieves more moderate improvement in stall margin, without the maximum efficiency loss. Hence, of the geometries tested, the S grooves appear to have the best overall impact on the machine performance. Velocity measurements and flow visualizations are performed in an axial plane located downstream of the grooves, near the trailing edge of the rotor. Reduced efficiency or performance co-occurs with elevated circumferential velocity in the tip region, but differences in the axial blockage are subtle. Yet, near the BEP, the regions with reduced axial velocity, or even negative velocity between the TLV and the endwall, are wider behind the U grooves compared to the S grooves. The vorticity profiles also show that at low flow rates the TLV is ingested entirely by the grooves, in contrast to the best efficiency point, where a considerable fraction of the TLV rollup occurs downstream of the grooves.

The current pandemic has created new scenarios and problems regarding religious freedom. To combat the spread of the coronavirus, governments have ordered social distance and total closure of numerous activities including the celebration of sacred rites without consulting religious authorities. Religions have accepted the restrictions with a sense of responsibility, but the sacrifice of religious freedom for the faithful has been great. In addition, the effects of the pandemic together with the negative effects of globalization will continue over time, generating economic and social damage. In addition to prayer, religions have invited the faithful to a social commitment to reduce the critical issues of the crisis and specially to combat poverty. It is therefore necessary to analyze some topics: critical issues relating to the limitation of the right to religious freedom; what problems arise in the relations between powers (civil and religious); what problems arise in relations between state and religions; how the constitutional rights of the faithful and citizens are protected; what are the legal problems internal to the different religions, considering that the judgment on the validity of online rites is different; what is the role of religions in the face of the economic crisis. For the first time since the beginning of the human rights era, there has been a serious conflict between human rights, especially for the greater protection given to the right to health. The right to religious freedom also suffered, but it must be considered that the protection of the right to religious freedom also contributes to the recovery of a „good” economy, which can counteract the negative effects of the pandemic and globalization. We must build a personalist humanism, which the alliance between religions can promote. A humanism that respects the rights and dignity of man, against the logic of profit, and that rewrites the ethical rules of the economy. Looking at the post-pandemic, religions can be the soul of the ethical and moral rules that must guide the „good economy” in society to overcome social and economic differences.
