Research article introductions (RAIs) play a significant role in gaining publication, and therefore have been studied by many applied linguists. Research into RAIs published in Indonesia has begun to be developed (Adnan, 2009; Mirahayuni, 2001; Safnil, 2000), and generally conclude that Indonesian Humanities RAIs were structured differently from English RAIs. However, as these are early studies, their findings still awaits scrutiny, and little information on Indonesian RAIs especially in Education has been published. Several models describing discourse structure of research article introductions have been proposed, but they have been problematic when applied to analyse RAIs. This paper reports an examination of the applicability of two important models, the CARS (Swales, 1990) and the PJP model claimed to be an Indonesian model of Humanities RAIs (Safnil, 2000), using a selection of 21 Indonesian research article Introductions (RAIs) written by Indonesian academics in Education. It concentrates on the following questions: To what extent do these models fit the data and why? The examination found that none of the RAIs fit the CARS, and only less than half fit the PJP model for various reasons. Therefore a new model is proposed. This model fits most of the data. The paper claims that apart from national concerns, discourse patterns of RAIs are also affected by writing guides provided by the discipline.

The recent multiple-solution problem in extracting physics information from a fit to the experimental data in high energy physics is reviewed from a mathematical viewpoint. All these multiple solutions were previously found via a fit process, while in this paper we prove that if the sum of two coherent Breit–Wigner functions is used to fit the measured distribution, there should be two and only two nontrivial solutions, and they are related to each other by analytical formulae. For real experimental measurements in more complicated situations, we also provide a numerical method to derive the other solution from the already obtained one. The excellent consistency between the exact solution obtained this way and the fit process justifies the method. From our results it is clear that the physics interpretation should be very different depending on which solution is selected. So we suggest that all the experimental measurements with potential multiple solutions be re-analyzed to find the other solution because the result is not complete if only one solution is reported.

We investigate an optimal stopping time problem which arises from pricing Russian options (i.e. perpetual look-back options) on a stock whose price fluctuations are modelled by adjoining a hidden Markov process to the classical Black-Scholes geometric Brownian motion model. By extending the technique of smooth fit to allow jump discontinuities, we obtain an explicit closed-form solution. It gives a non-standard application of the well-known smooth fit principle where the optimal strategy involves jumping over the optimal boundary and by an arbitrary overshoot. Based on the optimal stopping analysis, an arbitrage-free price for Russian options under the hidden Markov model is derived.

Sensor based robotic systems are an important emerging technology. When robots are working in unknown or partially known environments, they need range sensors that will measure the Cartesian coordinates of surfaces of objects in their environment. Like any sensor, range sensors must be calibrated. The range sensors can be calibrated by comparing a measured surface shape to a known surface shape. The most simple surface is a plane and many physical objects have planar surfaces. Thus, an important problem in the calibration of range sensors is to find the best (least squares) fit of a plane to a set of 3D points. We have formulated a constrained optimization problem to determine the least squares fit of a hyperplane to uncertain data. The first order necessary conditions require the solution of an eigenvalue problem. We have shown that the solution satisfies the second order conditions (the Hessian matrix is positive definite). Thus, our solution satisfies the sufficient conditions for a local minimum. We have performed numerical experiments that demonstrate that our solution is superior to alternative methods.

Purpose – Excess consumption of apparel is driven by the apparel industry to offer more styles at lower prices in shorter time and the consumers’ desire to change fashion. The purpose of this paper is to apply adaptable design in apparel as a sustainable design solution for excess consumption problem. Design/methodology/approach – Guided by sustainable apparel design model C2CAD, two adaptable apparel prototypes for female college students were designed and developed. Focus group discussion and wear test were conducted with female college students to evaluate users’ acceptance, fit, comfort, and adaptability of the two prototypes. Findings – Both prototypes were comfortable to wear by users with different sizes, indicating the users could wear the garment when she changed size. The adaptations and conversions were easily and enjoyably figured out by the users. The users would keep and use the adaptable apparel for a long time. The users would also buy fewer apparel if they were to own the adaptable apparel. Adaptable apparel would increase apparel utilization, eliminate the need to purchase unnecessary additional amount of clothing, and reduce excess consumption. Originality/value – This research provided a pilot study on adaptable apparel design as an innovative approach to help solve excessive consumption problem. The adaptable garment prototypes would allow the fashion-forward female college student to easily change the function, fit, and style of the environmentally friendly garments.

We study the Bayesian disorder problem for a negative binomial process. The aim is to determine a stopping time which is as close as possible to the random and unknown moment at which a sequentially observed negative binomial process changes the value of its characterizing parameter p ∈ (0, 1). The solution to this problem is explicitly derived through the reduction of the original optimal stopping problem to an integro-differential free-boundary problem. A careful analysis of the free-boundary equation and of the probabilistic nature of the boundary point allows us to specify when the smooth fit principle holds and when it breaks down in favour of the continuous fit principle.

We study the place scheduling problem which has many application backgrounds in realities. For the block manufacturing project with special manufacturing platform requirements, we propose a place resource schedule problem. First, the mathematical model for the place resource schedule problem is given. On the basis of resource-constrained project scheduling problem and packing problem, we develop a hybrid heuristic method which combines priority rules and three-dimensional best fit algorithm, in which the priority rules determine the scheduling order and the three-dimensional best fit algorithm solves the placement. After this method is used to get an initial solution, the iterated local search is employed to get an improvement. Finally, we use a set of simulation data to demonstrate the steps of the proposed method and verify its feasibility.

This thesis evaluates some of the most recent and promising approaches for deriving the No Fit Polygon for two simple polygons, possibly with holes, and verify that the approach works in practice. We have chosen three different approaches based on the complexity of the input. These approaches were implemented and benchmarked against CGAL [1], a third party library which provides solvers for many computational geometry problems. Our solution solves problems of a higher degree of complexity than that of the library we benchmarked against and for input of lower complexity we solve the problem in a more efficient manner.

Pregnancy is a sensitive period in women’s lives; pregnant women encounter various physical changes and emotional challenges during pregnancy. The vision for Sweden’s eHealth initiative is to be the best in the world in using eHealth to make it easier for people to achieve a healthy wellbeing and equal welfare by 2025. However, there is a lack of empirical studies in the area, especially studies associated with both eHealth and pregnancy in a Swedish context. Therefore, the thesis intended to seek the factors that affect a pregnant woman to adopt an eHealth innovation by applying qualitative interviews. Eleven women were selected including both women who are currently pregnant and women who have experienced pregnancy in recent years. Semi-structed interviews were chosen to gain more in-depth insights of the challenges during pregnancy. The data analysis followed the framework of Unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT). Rogers’ innovation diffusion theory was discussed in relation to the study as well. The results based on the date from the study showed that the real drive for pregnant women to adopt an eHealth innovation is the dissatisfaction with the current solution, namely prenatal care in the Swedish public health care system. Other moderating factors that affect their intention for adoption are relevant knowledge, expertise support and trialability. The results revealed that women with foreign background were more likely to be dissatisfied with prenatal care in Sweden, and that professionals’ involvement in using the innovation and the possibility of experimenting with it will increase the intention of innovation adoption. Age, experience, and personality were not supported in having an impact on innovation adoption in this study. The limitations of the study are transferability and confirmability, where credibility, dependability and authenticity are high in this study.

Involving customers in the process of developing new products and services promises to reduce the uncertainty of the environment in which start-ups operate. This dissertation investigates the market opportunity of a portable coffee maker through customer feedback. By following the principles of the Lean Startup Approaches, the study verifies the founder’s assumptions about customer profiles, and (re-)designs the start-up’s value propositions in a way that creates a match – the Problem-Solution Fit. The launch of a customer discovery survey helped to identify customer‘s desires and needs in their coffee break. As the results show, customers do not consider mobility as a key characteristic for their coffee maker. However, the findings indicate that customers value aspects like convenience, sustainability, the act of socializing while drinking a coffee, and a feeling of self-satisfaction from brewing coffee themselves. Even though customer feedback did not validate that mobility creates much customer value, the findings on customer’s preferences will be used to revise the founder’s business idea. A pivot to an innovative coffee experience will initiate a second feedback cycle of customer discovery. To summarize, the study proves the value of early customer feedback because it prevented wasting the founder’s resources for product development when there is no market opportunity, and increased the validity of customer profiles.

Friedrich Schleiermacher was concerned throughout his career with the problem of epistemic fit, and his eventual solution belongs to the Reformation tradition according to which God can be apprehended only by faith. His key claims are as follows: (a) that God is the one upon whom all that exists depends absolutely; (b) that God can be apprehended as God only insofar as everything, including oneself, is apprehended as absolutely dependent upon God; (c) that humans are ‘God-forgetful,’ insofar as we apprehend the world as if it were independent, and, so, misapprehend God; and (d) that we can be redeemed from our God-forgetfulness, and so apprehend God properly, only insofar as the perfect God-consciousness of Christ is mediated to us by his Spirit. For Schleiermacher, then, one can stand in a proper epistemic relationship to God only on the basis of God’s redeeming love.

We don’t always know how to help people, even when those people are our friends. This is not just a problem about how to provide the help we know others need. It is also the problem of what help they need in the first place, and this is a problem that requires ethical thinking. The theory of well-being defended in this book—the value fulfillment theory—provides a solution to this problem. In short, the theory says that our lives go well to the extent that we succeed in terms of what matters to us emotionally, reflectively, and over the long term. In other words, well-being consists in fulfilling or realizing our appropriate values over time. Therefore, according to the value fulfillment theory, when we want to help others achieve greater well-being, we should pay attention to their values. This means attending to how others’ values fit together, how they understand what it means to succeed in terms of these values, and how things could change for them over time. Being a good and helpful friend, then, requires cultivating some habits of humility that overcome our tendency to think we know what’s good for other people without really understanding what it’s like to be them. This work presents the first book-length defense of value fulfillment theory. It is aimed at philosophers and psychologists, and anyone with an interest in philosophical research on human well-being.

This chapter explores and critiques technological optimism and the sociopolitical appeal of technological fixes with regard to energy and climate mitigation. The term “technical fix” is frequently used by academics and activists to describe the application of a technological solution to a social problem, where a reductive problem definition leads to only a partial and superficial solution. As the transition to lower-carbon energy systems proceeds, technological change, rather than social change, is consistently prioritized in climate policy discourse, despite well-established recognition of cultural and institutional changes involved in reducing fossil-fuel reliance. The history of development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies provides an illustrative example of technological optimism in climate mitigation. The political appeal of CCS as a prominent climate change mitigation approach showcases the tendency toward technological optimism and how promises of technological fixes have dominated political discourse surrounding climate mitigation.

This book explains how to use the bulk synchronous parallel (BSP) model to design and implement parallel algorithms in the areas of scientific computing and big data. Furthermore, it presents a hybrid BSP approach towards new hardware developments such as hierarchical architectures with both shared and distributed memory. The book provides a full treatment of core problems in scientific computing and big data, starting from a high-level problem description, via a sequential solution algorithm to a parallel solution algorithm and an actual parallel program written in the communication library BSPlib. Numerical experiments are presented for parallel programs on modern parallel computers ranging from desktop computers to massively parallel supercomputers. The introductory chapter of the book gives a complete overview of BSPlib, so that the reader already at an early stage is able to write his/her own parallel programs. Furthermore, it treats BSP benchmarking and parallel sorting by regular sampling. The next three chapters treat basic numerical linear algebra problems such as linear system solving by LU decomposition, sparse matrix-vector multiplication (SpMV), and the fast Fourier transform (FFT). The final chapter explores parallel algorithms for big data problems such as graph matching. The book is accompanied by a software package BSPedupack, freely available online from the author’s homepage, which contains all programs of the book and a set of test programs.

Routing is the act of selecting a course of travel. Routing problems are one of the most prominent and persistent problems in geoinformatics. This large research area has a strong theoretical foundation with ties to operations research and management science. There are a wide variety of routing models to fit many different application areas, including shortest path problems, vehicle routing problems, and the traveling salesman problem, among many others. There are also a range of optimal and heuristic solution procedures for solving instances of those problems. Research is ongoing to expand the types of routing problems that can be solved, and the environments within which they can be applied.

Radial Basis Functions (RBF) mesh morphing, its theoretical basis, its numerical implementation, and its use for the solution of industrial problems, mainly in Computer Aided Engineering (CAE), are introduced. RBF theory is presented showing the mathematical framework for a basic RBF fit, its MathCAD implementation, and its usage. The equations required for a 2D case comparing RBF smoothing and pseudosolid smoothing based on Finite Elements Method (FEM) structural solution are given; RBF exhibits excellent performance and produces high quality meshes even for very large deformations. The industrial application of RBF morphing to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is covered presenting the RBF Morph software, its implementation, and a description of its working principles and performance. Practical examples include: physical problems that use CFD, shape parameterisation strategy, and modelling guidelines for setting-up a well posed RBF problem. Future directions explored are: transient shape evolution, fluid structure interaction modelling, and shape parameterization in multi-physics, multi-objective design optimization.

‘Quantum theory’ is not a single physical theory but a framework in which many different concrete theories fit. As such, a solution to the quantum measurement problem ought to provide a recipe to interpret each such concrete theory, in a mutually consistent way. But with the exception of the Everett interpretation, the main extant solutions either try to make sense of the abstract framework as if it were concrete, or else interpret one particular quantum theory under the fiction that it is fundamental and exact. In either case, these approaches are unable to help themselves to the very theory-laden, level-relative ways in which quantum theory makes contact with experiment in mainstream physics, and so are committed to major revisionary projects which have not been carried out even in outline. As such, only the Everett interpretation is currently suited to make sense of quantum physics as it is found.

Abstract Design teams are often asked to produce solutions of a certain type in response to design challenges. Depending on the circumstances, they may be tasked with generating a solution that clearly follows the given specifications and constraints of a problem (i.e., a Best Fit solution), or they may be encouraged to provide a higher risk solution that challenges those constraints, but offers other potential rewards (i.e., a Dark Horse solution). In the current research, we investigate: what happens when design teams are asked to generate solutions of both types at the same time? How does this request for dual and conflicting modes of thinking impact a team’s design solutions? In addition, as concept generation proceeds, are design teams able to discern which solution fits best in each category? Rarely, in design research, do we prompt design teams for “normal” designs or ask them to think about both types of solutions (boundary preserving and boundary challenging) at the same time. This leaves us with the additional question: can design teams tell the difference between Best Fit solutions and Dark Horse solutions? In this paper, we present the results of an exploratory study with 17 design teams from five different organizations. Each team was asked to generate both a Best Fit solution and a Dark Horse solution in response to the same design prompt. We analyzed these solutions using rubrics based on familiar design metrics (feasibility, usefulness, and novelty) to investigate their characteristics. Our assumption was that teams’ Dark Horse solutions would be more novel, less feasible, but equally useful when compared with their Best Fit solutions. Our analysis revealed statistically significant results showing that teams generally produced Best Fit solutions that were more useful (met client needs) than Dark Horse solutions, and Dark Horse solutions that were more novel than Best Fit solutions. When looking at each team individually, however, we found that Dark Horse concepts were not always more novel than Best Fit concepts for every team, despite the general trend in that direction. Some teams created equally novel Best Fit and Dark Horse solutions, and a few teams generated Best Fit solutions that were more novel than their Dark Horse solutions. In terms of feasibility, Best Fit and Dark Horse solutions did not show significant differences. These findings have implications for both design educators and design practitioners as they frame design prompts and tasks for their teams of interest.

Math word problem (MWP) is challenging due to the limitation in training data where only one “standard” solution is available. MWP models often simply fit this solution rather than truly understand or solve the problem. The generalization of models (to diverse word scenarios) is thus limited. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel approach, TSN-MD, by leveraging the teacher network to integrate the knowledge of equivalent solution expressions and then to regularize the learning behavior of the student network. In addition, we introduce the multiple-decoder student network to generate multiple candidate solution expressions by which the final answer is voted. In experiments, we conduct extensive comparisons and ablative studies on two large-scale MWP benchmarks, and show that using TSN-MD can surpass the state-of-the-art works by a large margin. More intriguingly, the visualization results demonstrate that TSN-MD not only produces correct final answers but also generates diverse equivalent expressions of the solution.

Abstract The work presented in this paper derives from the design of a position sensing interferometer, in which circular fringe patterns are automatically analyzed by a computer vision system. Central to this process is a circle fitting problem in the sense of least Linfinity norm, also known as Chebichev or MinMax fit. The problem at hand can be formulated as follows: Given a set of points in the plane, find the pair of concentric circles with minimum radial gap enclosing all the points. The solution to this problem is elegantly given by common computational geometry tools, indeed the center of such a circle is necessarily a vertex of the Nearest Point Voronoi Diagram (NVD), a vertex of the Farthest Point Voronoi Diagram (FVD), or an intersection of edges from both diagrams. An algorithm for determining the Chebichev circular fit is presented and illustrated on the basis of that observation. Applications and potential extensions of this method to soft gauging and image metrology will also be discussed.

In engineering activities various types of problems have to be solved. Most of these problems are routine problems and some are complicated problems for which it is difficult to formalize all the problem-solving processes. We propose a knowledge management system for supporting these problem solving processes. One example is using information applicable to new and complicated problems that has resulted from solving similar problems in the past. In addition, in such complicated problem solving processes, most of the decomposed sub-problems can be handled as routine problems. In this paper, we propose use of formalized knowledge and document information that represents the history of problem-solving processes to support the solution of both types of problem. For that purpose, we propose the Documentation Management system for Problem Solving (DMaPS), which supports a user solving a problem by document processing. In this support process, the system retrieves related documents for the user’s problems using formalized knowledge and information retrieval techniques. After retrieving related documents, the user modifies them to fit their problem. The modified information is associated with the formalized knowledge and is stored as documents for future reuse.

Matching of cycle models to test results for gas turbine engines is fundamentally an exercise in optimal robust parameter estimation. The problem is inherently nondeterministic in nature, so it stands to reason that probabilistic information can be used to secure improved match accuracy if properly employed. This paper proposes an approach to status matching that eliminates the need for parameter weightings, gives an intuitive feel for the results in terms of probabilistic parameters, utilizes all available information (probabilistic and deterministic), and yields high-accuracy matches between model prediction and experiment. The method development begins with a typical sum-squared errors approach and subsequently builds on this. A deviation penalty function formulation is introduced to improve solution conditioning and a multi-objective measure of fit based on the Z-score is introduced. Several measures of model fit are compared including summed-squared errors, minimax, and sum absolute error formulations. This approach is first demonstrated for a simple cantilever beam parameter-matching problem, and is later discussed in the context of turbofan engine matching.

In this paper we describe a new method for simulating mechanical assembly between components that are composed of surfaces that do not have perfect geometric form. Mating between these imperfect form surfaces is formulated as a constrained optimization problem of the form “minimize the distance from perfect fit, subject to non-interference between components.” We explore the characteristics of this mating problem and investigate the applicability of several potential solution algorithms. The problem can be solved by converting the constrained optimization formulation into an unconstrained problem using a penalty-function approach. We describe the characteristics of this unconstrained formulation and test the use of two different solution methods: a randomized search technique and a gradient-based method. We test the algorithm by simulating mating between component models that exhibit form errors typically generated in end-milling processes. These typical component variants are used as validation problems throughout our work. Results of two different validation problems are presented. Using these results, we evaluate the applicability of the mating algorithm to the problem of mechanical tolerance analysis for assemblies and mechanisms.

Abstract Extension of sensitivity methods to include higher order terms depends on the ability to compute higher order derivatives of the mass and stiffness matrices. This paper presents a method based on the use of cubic polynomials to fit mass and stiffness matrices across a range of interest of the design variable. The method is illustrated through an example which uses Padé approximants to expand the solution to a statics problem. The design variable is the thickness of one part of a plate with fixed boundaries. The solution gives a very good approximation over five fold change in the value of the design variable.
