Der volle Inhalt der QuelleVia experimental and empirical methods, this thesis consisted of three essays studies, on the one hand, the decision rules used in life-cycle decision-making with an emphasis on the correlation neglect and its consequences, and on other hand, hiring discrimination in relation to parenthood. Rational forward looking behavior requires solving complex problems involving computation of the expected maximum future valuations across choice alternatives (Emax computations). In Chapter 1, we conduct an experiment to measure the share of subjects able to perform these computations as well as the share of subjects using two alternative (sub-optimal) rules of computation which ignore correlation between future valuations. The first alternative rule captures subjects who perform Emax computations ignoring correlation between unobservables in the information set. The second alternative rule captures subjects computing the maximum of the expected future valuations (maxE computations), akin to the option-value model of Stock and Wise (1990). Our experimental design exploits different correlation structures between future valuations to separate the share of subjects using each rule. The experiment was conducted with a large and heterogenous sample of subjects, allowing to relate the propensity to use a given rule to a rich set of socio-economic characteristics. Our results suggest that 28% of subjects are able to perform Emax computations exploiting the correlation structure, 20% of subjects perform Emax computations ignoring correlation, while 52% of subjects perform maxE computations. Moreover, we find that the propensity to use a given rule significantly varies across education levels – higher educated subjects are significantly more likely to perform maxE computations. Chapter 2 studies how the labour uncertainties and increased fertility risks associated with delayed motherhood interact in shaping fertility decisions (timing and number of children). Having a child comes with more uncertainties, and agents strategically avoid uncertainties and conflict between parenthood and employment, particularly among women, by securing their employment before turning to parenthood. Consequently parenthood is being experienced on average later in life than ever. We develop a life-cycle model of labor supply and fertility choices decisions and we quantify how labor market uncertainties as well as correlation neglect contribute to fertility delaying. Our parameters estimated (preferences, wage equations, quality of children) are in line with the existing literature. Moreover, our results suggest that a reduction in the labour uncertainties affect differently fertility decisions according to the education attainment. Indeed, the reduction in labour uncertainties increases number of children and decreases the age at first childbirth for lower educated couples, however, it decreases the number of children and increases age at first childbirth of highly educated couples. The behavioural bias of correlation neglect has a heightened effect on fertility decisions and contributes to parenthood postponement. Finally, Chapter 3 presents experimental evidence about hiring discrimination in relation to parenthood in the province of Québec (Canada) via a correspondence testing. It also investigates to what extent parental leave as well as signalling work commitment reduce or reinforce hiring discrimination. Around 1300 applications were sent in response to online job openings for five categories of jobs. The results suggest that men benefit from a bonus when they experience parenthood while women undergo a penalty. Indeed, fathers have a callback rate 18 percentage points larger than their analogue childless men candidates while mother’s callback is 14 percentage points lower than the corresponding childless women’s callback. However, mothers have a higher callback rate than childless women for the job category patient attendant. Signalling job commitment does not eliminate motherhood penalty whereas substantially increases father’s callback rate. Our results suggest that taking parental leave does not affect mother’s callback rate and surprisingly increases father’s callback rate. Job mobility opens up job opportunities meaning employers tend to value the employee’s mobility.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleMen and young drivers are more often involved in serious and fatal road accidents than women and older drivers. According to the literature, risky and offending behaviours (ROBs) at the wheel could be motivated by the search for a sense of belonging and social status, but also by the affirmation of values relating to competence, power and masculinity. Few studies have proposed to directly test the mediating role of these values and normativity in gender and age differences affecting ROBs. Our work proposes to explore the role of adherence to certain values in the occurrence of ROBs at wheel; (b) to test the mediating role of these values in gender and age differences; (c) to verify the normativity of these behaviours according to gender and age. Six studies were carried out. The main results indicate that (a) adherence to values centred toward the pursuit of a high social status is particularly associated with ROBs; (b) these values partially mediate the observed gender and age differences; (c) ROBs related to speed are more socially valued by men and young drivers, but this phenomenon is not supported by the same motivations for these two populations. The theoretical implications of its results are discussed in terms of empirical relationships between the different models used. Applied perspectives for behaviour change in the field of road safety are also discussed

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleHyperphagia and obesity are major problems in our society that affect differentially men and women. Therefore, it is necessary to seek the physiological basis of these health problems using animal models such as stress-induced hyperphagia and diet-induced obesity (DIO) in rats, taking into account diet, stress and sex factors. Investigating the role of the orexigenic neuropeptide relaxin-3 appears to be promising because of its involvement in the regulation of stress and food intake. First, we studied the role of relaxin–3 system in DIO rat model. These rats are hyperphagic and defend their elevated body weight against caloric restriction. The results of this study showed higher expression of relaxin-3 in the DIO rats in free feeding conditions, and, in addition, refeeding after food deprivation led to increased expression of the cognate receptor of relaxin-3 RXFP3 in DIO rats suggesting that relaxin-3 is involved in the defense of elevated body weight in the DIO phenotype. In the second study, hyperphagia was developed in female but not male rats submitted to repeated episodes of food restriction and stress. We observed that female hyperphagic rats showed increased expression of relaxin-3 which could be a cause of this sexually specific behavior. In the third study, by the central injection of relaxin-3 in male and female rats, we showed that female rats were more sensitive to lower doses of relaxin-3 and demonstrated higher increase in food intake compared to male rats. We also observed a greater stimulation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis in male rats that may limit the orexigenic effect of relaxin-3. Conversely, in female rats, stimulation of corticotropin-releasing factor expression in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis may enhance feeding behavior. In summary, our work demonstrates the role of relaxin-3/RXFP3 system in hyperphagia and body weight gain and shows its sex-specific effects in food intake regulation and stress response.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe objective of this thesis is to study the influence of gender identity on the risk-taking behaviour of young drivers. The work is laid out in three main sections. The first one focuses on the validation of measurement tools and the activation of gender identity (studies 1-4) The second one focuses on the validation of tools designed to measure driver risk-taking behaviour, risk and benefits perception in various fields, and on the link between gender stereotype conformity and the aforementioned variables in a broad range of subjects (studies 5 & 6). The third section of this thesis (study 7) aims to test the effect of gender identity in the multi-dimensional sense (i.e., conformity to gender stereotypes and identification to one’s gender group) on declared risk-taking behaviour and risk perception among young drivers. The effects of gender identity on driving and on various other fields are compared and the causality between gender identity and risk-taking behaviour is tested. The results show a link between gender identity and risk-taking, risk perception and benefits perception, which varies according to the domain and gender. However, the results leave us unable to ascertain the existence of a stronger effect of gender identity on driving behaviour. They also impede the highlighting of a causality effect between gender identity and risky behaviour among young drivers. Even if the link between gender identity and risk-taking seems to be complex, this work demonstrates the importance of a psychosocial approach in understanding gender differences and differences within a gender group in risk-taking behaviour

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn the present study, we investigate the relationships between risk-taking and different individual and social variables – gender-role identity, sensations-seeking, self-esteem partial-attachment and parental-supervision – in young adolescent pedestrians (9 to 14 years old). In order to obtain valuable data, 948 pupils from CM1 to 3rd had to answer a set of questions. The results have confirmed that, on the one hand, boys take more risks than girls, and on the other hand, the more the child is old, the more he takes risks in the road-space. The results confirm, also, the association of the variables gender-role identity, sensations-seeking, parental attachment and parental supervision with the pedestrian risk-taking. On the other hand, there is no relationship between self-esteem and pedestrian risk-taking. A series of multiple regression analyses have shown that sensations-seeking cannot be explained only by biological or physiological need of sensations, but also by the need to correspond with the social roles. The Baron and Kenny (1986) model allows to verify that the parental-supervision does act as a mediating variable between parental-attachment and pedestrian risk-taking. So, we propose a more complex model of the MIO (construct of “working models”) of Greenberg (1987). Supervision is one of the dimensions of the attachment that is to say that, in addition to the communication/confidence and alienation dimensions, there is the supervision dimension. The feeling of being well-supervised by the parents, explains the self-endangering in addition to the confident-attachment
