This thesis presents a comparative study of image registration at two picture collection libraries. The two registration systems are analyzed as to the theoretical principles behind them and their practical application, and related to theoretical tools for subject analysis and bibliographic standards. While a growing number of picture collections now digitize their material, generally accepted standards and methods for the registration of digital images are still lacking. Many different systems coexist, often developed in-house in response to ad hoc needs and based on traditional registration tools created for textual documents, resulting in internationally incompatible mixed-format systems. The two picture collections examined here, however, have opted for similar, standardized tools for registration and subject analysis, and while there are differences in their application and focus, they have both considered issues of cross-system compatibility. The objective of this study is to benefit other ALM-related picture collections currently in the process of digitizing their visual materials and establishing standards for their handling.

THE ATTIC DOOR is the feature-length film co-written and directed by Danny Daneau while pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Central Florida. Many challenges had to be met to produce a feature-length motion picture utilizing digital technology on an ultra-low budget as part of a graduate education. Beyond gaining a profound understanding of the physical, financial, and emotional strength it takes to complete a feature-length motion picture, Daneau experienced the creative challenges that all filmmakers must meet when applying the principles of filmmaking theory to an actual work of self-expression. The production process for an original narrative film under the guidelines established by the university has pushed him to make a motion picture that is both a highly personal work of film art and evidence of the educational journey he has taken for the past three years.

Annotation:
In the American capitalist society, the media is often an agent used to perpetuate ideals and to inform consumers of products that they can purchase by using multiple advertising techniques. In an attempt to counter the thin body ideal for women, some companies have begun advertising their products by using plus size models, such as the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. The purpose of this research is to examine college women's perceptions of the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty, an advertising campaign whose goal is to reverse the stereotypical body ideal for women and broaden the definition of beauty. Some sociologists have criticized Dove for sending conflicting messages. This study is the first that focuses on women's perceptions about this potential conflict. Through the use of both quantitative and qualitative methods, this study examined if, how, and when women changed their initial perceptions toward the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty based on two separate scenarios brought to their attention. This is important because the findings suggest how consumers can change their perceptions regarding a company, in this case one that is a part of a multi-million dollar parent company, based on how a company advertises its products.

Annotation:
Seventeenth century England was forced to come to terms with events such as the Civil War and the regicide of King Charles I, in the midst of contending with the cultural changes brought upon by print culture, the effects of which appeared throughout all aspects of English society. These changes helped form a relationship between print and oral culture, one of negotiation among the producers and regulators of work and the society consuming the works. The discussion of this negotiation has led to varying conclusions concerning the true impact of printed materials on English society and culture, all of which tend to see the relationship in one of two ways: print's undeniable and unprecedented influence on culture, or its function as supplement to oral and visual communication. The latter conclusion helped form the foundation of this study, which aims to further understand the negotiation between print and English society. The close analysis of recurring themes of the supernatural, specifically prophecy, witchcraft, regicide, and the natural world, will show unmistakable similarities between popular entertainment and written works. Through the examination of these themes, this thesis will illustrate the extent to which common imagery and wording appeared in newsbooks and what this says about oral communication and culture in early modern England.

Focusing on satirical prints from illustrated newspapers, this thesis examines nineteenth-century French notions of masculinity in a culture that linked its reputation for success to the productivity of its male citizens. I will focus on man’s connection to marriage and family life, as these institutions were so closely connected to perceptions of masculinity. Specifically, I look at portrayals of the cuckold and the bachelor—tropes of male identity that deviated from the ideal notions of the French man—and how printed images reflected, commented on, and shaped the ways in which conventional French masculinity was imagined. Examining these lithographs in light of specific social and political shifts, including changing marriage and divorce laws, the rising feminist movement, and the loss of the Franco-Prussian war, will ground my project historically. Popular lithographic prints, from the 1840s to the early 1900s, remarked not only on masculinity itself—the ways in which men should act and look—but also on the ways in which any departures from the norm threatened the French family and nation. Although medical journals and etiquette manuals expounded on the ‘natural’ qualities of men, satirical cartoons that were most often published weekly, were immediately pertinent in their commentary. Using prints to decode these ever-prevalent issues of masculinity, my project makes clear why representations and notions of certain types of masculinity were so alarming to French audiences. Although much of the scholarship around nineteenth-century French lithography deals with the censorship issues and political implications of the illustrated newspapers, I focus instead on the social ramifications of such images. I emphasize the distinctive nature of such prints—the audience, the circulation, and the cultural impact of printed images themselves. Looking to both art and social historical texts, I concentrate on the everyday realm of printed images, and what it meant for Parisian men and women to be surrounded by such tropes. My thesis connects the growing concerns over family and marriage to issues of failed masculinity and the ways in which they were addressed in the print culture across the century. It explores how these satirical cartoons provided a humorous, yet urgent, visual attempt to illuminate the tricky and conflicting expectations of French men in the nineteenth century.

Annotation:
In the sixteenth century, Martin Luther s Protestant Reformation generated multiple reform movements and political transformations in Europe. Within this general period of reform, political and cultural changes from the Tudor era (1485-1603) created a separate English Reformation. The English Reformation evolved from the different agendas of the early Tudor monarchs and occurred in two distinct waves: an initial, more moderate Henrician Reformation and a later, more complete Edwardian Reformation. Henry VIII and Edward VI s attempts to redefine monarchy through a new State and Church identity drove English church reform during this period, giving these religious shifts distinct political roots. Cultural artifacts were prominent indicators of these differing political goals, and Henry VIII and Edward VI adjusted and removed images and texts according to their propaganda methods. These royal manipulations of culture are well-documented, but historians have overlooked important components in the communication process. Lay responses to imagery changes ranging from compliance to rebellion demonstrate the complex relationship of images, monarchy, and reform. Examining images function as propaganda with questions of intent, reception, and comprehension in royal communication is imperative for assessing the impact of royal messages on Tudor culture. Analyzing Tudor art as a form of political communication that disseminated idealized political representation reveals a strong visual discourse between the King and the English people. Images held key powers within royal discourse to create and disseminate propaganda of a kingship.

This dissertation presents the results of an intervention study examining whether electronic picturebook applications on a tablet computer support the development of print knowledge in preschool age children in low literacy childcare environments. Print knowledge is one of the earliest literacy skills to develop and there is evidence that children who enter kindergarten without this skill are less likely to be reading on grade level two years later (Piasta et al., 2012; Whitehurst & Lonigan, 1998). Since print knowledge is so critical for later literacy development, it is important to make sure that all children acquire this capacity. The sample for this study consisted of 3 and 4 year old children who attended six low literacy classrooms in four childcare centers located in Delaware and Chester Counties. Classrooms were randomly assigned as either experimental or control. A tablet computer preloaded with interactive electronic picturebooks was added to the experimental classroom for children to interact with during free play. Teachers were told not to use the tablet for individual, small or large group reading and there were no other changes to the literacy environment. Children were allowed to play with the tablet as a free choice activity. There were no changes to the literacy environment of the control classrooms. A pre-test/post-design using the Get Ready To Read Screening tool measured changes in children’s print knowledge learning over the three month period of time in which the study was conducted. The quality of the literacy environment was measured at the beginning and end of the study. Additional data were gathered through teacher and family questionnaires and classroom observation. The frequency and duration of tablet use was also tracked. The results indicate that there were no positive significant differences in print knowledge from pre to post test. This indicates that the teacher is still the most critical component of the emergent literacy environment.

The purpose of these case studies was to explore the impact of a public library’s print collection on the community using the library. The motivation for this research is driven by three factors in the South African public library environment. Firstly, the huge investment in library print collections is not currently accounted for in any assessment of library performance, other than expenditure. Secondly, studies of the low levels of literacy and book ownership have established that the public libraries are potentially the only source of reading material for over fifty percent of the population. Thirdly, The Library and Information Services (LIS) Transformation Charter calls for more effective and meaningful performance measurement. The research design for this study was informed by the work of reading theorists. The methodology made use of the GLOs (Generic Learning Outcomes) developed and adopted by the United Kingdom Museums, Libraries and Archives Council as well as research into reading outcomes in public libraries. The study was undertaken within the framework of impact assessment as outlined in the ISO 16439 – Information and documentation – Methods and procedures for assessing the impact of libraries and the work of library assessment specialists, Markless and Streatfield. The research was conducted at two public libraries in two different communities of Cape Town. Questionnaires were distributed to fifty people at each site to collect quantitative data, with follow up interviews conducted with a smaller sample. The focus of the survey and interviews was the leisure reading activities of the participants. The results describe both the patterns of library use and reading behaviour, as well as the impact of using the print collection on the participants. While the results showed that taste in reading differed, in some respects, between communities, the participants all considered reading an important pastime. The reading experiences described by the participants in this study at the two libraries were similar, as were the benefits gained from leisure reading. This study mirrors the results of studies performed in the United States of America (USA) and the United Kingdom. Recommendations from this research are that the impact of the public libraries print collection on users, that primarily make use of the collection for leisure reading, is significant and should be documented as an important outcome of a library’s performance. Public libraries should focus efforts on providing leisure reading material, despite pressure to focus on literacy, skills development, youth programmes and other activities that are considered to produce more tangible outcomes. In order to uncover factors that make reading an activity of choice, further research needs to be conducted into what differentiates the serious leisure readers from those who do not engage in this pastime.

The purpose of my research was to determine how the use of picture books during instruction would improve student word choice in writing. Donald Graves (2003), a renowned researcher in the teaching of writing, states, "All children need . . . to be surrounded with poetry, stories, information books, biography, science and history, imaginative and factual books." Graves' research presents successful classroom instruction when teachers incorporate literature as a fundamental part of their reading and writing instruction. Likewise, Susan Anderson McElveen and Connie Campbell Dierking (2000) conducted a study with their students using picture books as "precise examples" to teach writing. Their analysis of data showed that using children's literature, or picture books, served as a "bridge that linked the target skill with the reason for thinking, speaking, and writing like a writer" with their students. The subjects of my study were my fourth-grade students. I obtained data for this study from student writing samples, anecdotal records of my students, my daily reflections, class discussions, debriefings, and writing activities. I assessed students' writing samples using criteria for assessing word choice in the 6-Point Writing Guide in Vicki Spandel's (2005) Creating Young Writers. This study found that the majority of my students demonstrated improved word choice in their writing. Limitations of this study are discussed, as well as implications for future use of picture books during instruction.

The Center for Disease Control estimates that one in 88 births result in a diagnosis of autism (CDC, 2012). Of those individuals diagnosed with autism approximately 25-61% fail to develop vocal output capabilities (Weitxz, Dexter, & Moore, 1997). The use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems, such as Picture Exchange (PE) and Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCA) has been demonstrated as effective for those individuals to acquire a mand repertoire (Mirenda, 2003). The focus of the current study was to compare mand acquisition using PE and the iPad as a VOCA, in terms of acquisition rate and participant device preference, and with regard to collateral effects on vocalizations and disruptive behaviors. Additionally, the study evaluated the effectiveness of a teaching strategy using constant time delay with full-physical prompts (Sigafoos, Doss, & Reichel, 1989) in the acquisition of a mand repertoire using PE and the iPad as a VOCA, in five preschool aged children with autism. Finally, the devices were assessed in terms of their social validity. Three participants acquired the ability to communicate using the iPad as a VOCA more readily and two participants acquired the ability to communicate more quickly using PE, while the overall rate of independent manding was higher for four participants using the VOCA. The results of the study also indicate that the use of a constant time delay procedure with full-physical prompts was effective in the acquisition of both PE and the VOCA device. Regarding preference, four participants demonstrated a clear preference for the VOCA device and one for PE, when presented with the option to respond with either device. With respect to collateral effects, the data were largely inconclusive. For one participant there was an overall increase in vocalizations, for one participant there was an overall decrease in vocalizations, for the remaining three there was no systematic change in their rate of vocalizations during or following communication training. Regarding disruptive behaviors, an overall decrease in the occurrence was seen for two participants, for the remaining three the rates of occurrence did not change systematically following communication training. Finally, in terms of social validity, both the VOCA device and PE were found to be acceptable communication tools, with educators reporting that they would not only include such training within their classroom routines, but would also recommend its use in the future.

History

This dissertation makes three key arguments regarding politics and print culture in antebellum Florida. First, Florida’s territorial status, historic geographical divisions, and local issues necessitated the use of political parties. Second, Florida’s political parties evolved from a focus on charismatic men and local geographic loyalties to loyalty to party regardless of who was running to national and regional loyalties above local issues and men. Lastly, the central and most consistent aspect of Florida’s political party development was the influence of newspapers and their editors. To understand Florida politics in the nineteenth century it is necessary to recognize how the personal, geographical, and political divisions in Florida’s territorial past remained a critical factor in the development and function of national political parties in Florida. The local divisions within Florida in the 1820s created factions and personal loyalties that would later help characterize national parties in the 1840s. Political leaders, with the help of editors and their newspapers, created factions based more on personal loyalties than on ideology. By the 1850s party loyalty became paramount over personal or regional loyalties. In the last years before the Civil War Democrats linked Southern loyalty to the Democratic party and accused their opposition of treason against the South leading Florida and the nation to Civil War. Yet, throughout these political changes, editors and their newspapers remained central to political success, becoming the voice of political parties and critical to attracting and maintaining potential voters. In addition to understanding how politics functioned in antebellum Florida, this dissertation contributes to our larger understanding of the Second Party System and the South. An underlying argument of this dissertation is that while the Democrats tended to be better organized and more ideologically coherent, the Whigs suffered from constant in-fighting and splintering. This led to the Democratic domination of politics and, in the South, the ability of secession supporters to control the public conversation during the Sectional Crisis of the 1850s and lead the nation to war. This dissertation also claims that there is not just one South but many and exposes the myth of a changeless and monolithic South.

An abundance of research has been conducted about the importance of including books and literature as part of a young child's developmental process. Much of this research suggests that picture books are vital to a young child's healthy development and "are important influences that shape us by reflecting the politics and values of our society" (Fox, 1993, p. 656). This study was completed to analyze character roles and gender representation of male and female characters exclusively in children's picture books. The entire population of Caldecott Award and Honor Medal books published between 2001 and 2011 was utilized for a frequency analysis. Each Caldecott Award and Honor Medal book meeting this study's criteria was examined, read and analyzed. Books included only works of fiction and were delimited to exclude biographies, autobiographies, informational books, concept books and poetry. A total of 24 books were used in the data analysis. This research attempted to answer the following question: Are males and females equitably represented in recently published children's literature? From a content-analysis approach, within a historical perspective, this research aimed at examining if gender bias still dominates the literature, and if so, to what extent. The intellectual interest of this project is in discovering male and female presence and imagery in children's picture books.

Picturebooks play an important role in elementary education, but few teachers focus on their text-picture relationships. This qualitative study examined the impact of four narratives with different text-picture relationships on fourth graders' explicit recall and inference making, both immediately after reading and after a one week delay. The four relationships were loosely symmetrical, complementary, text carries the narrative, and ironic or contradictory. Twelve urban fourth graders, four reading at or above grade level, four reading moderately below grade level, and four reading significantly below grade level, met with the researcher on six occasions. The purpose was to read, retell, and answer questions about a story in a one-to-one setting. While each student read and responded independently, each received help with word recognition. Data consisted of transcriptions of oral retellings, interviews, and a cued recall measure. Transcriptions of story retellings were parsed into kernels and coded according to cognitive process, either explicit or implicit, and source of content. Possible sources were text, picture, text-picture overlap, and background knowledge. Five categories of inference emerged from the analysis of story retellings: local inferences, global inferences, associations, evaluations, and misinterpretations. An analysis of codes and categories and interview data revealed that the text-picture relationship influenced the sources of content readers recalled, inferences they constructed, expressed ease of story comprehension and recall, and expressed level of enjoyment. It also affected the meaning that students at three levels of reading ability constructed. Given that different text-picture interactions provide support for specific comprehension processes, this study suggests that teachers should consider the relationship of words and images when selecting reading materials for their classrooms, especially when students are reading below grade level.

Socially salient information (such as stereotypes and expectancies) can be transmitted amongst individuals in a variety of subtle ways. One of these is the Linguistic Expectancy Bias (LEB), in which patterns of linguistic abstraction indirectly indicate a speaker's attitudes toward a target. The LEB is a common feature of human communication, but research on it has largely been limited to the laboratory; its presence in news media reports is not well-studied. In three studies, I investigate the operation of the LEB in the print media domain. In the first, published reports of NFL games between intercity rivals were analyzed to determine whether or not hometown teams receive more favorable linguistic treatment than hated rivals; results indicate no evidence of a systematic LEB effect. In the second, news reports about the 2004 Presidential election were examined for differential coverage based on the party membership of the candidates, with no evidence of linguistic bias discovered. In the third, participants were exposed to a description of a politician that varies in the levels of abstraction used to describe his actions and asked to form impressions of him. Linguistic bias was found to have a subtly paradoxical effect, such that bias against a candidate resulted in greater explicit and implicit liking for him. Implications for both the social psychology and political science literatures are discussed.

The Happiest Place on Earth is a feature-length film written, directed, and produced by John Goshorn as part of the requirements for earning a Master of Fine Arts in Film & Digital Media from the University of Central Florida. The project aims to challenge existing conventions of the American fiction film on multiple levels - aesthetic, narrative, technical, and industrial - while dealing with a distinctly American subject and target audience. These challenges were both facilitated and necessitated by the limited resources available to the production team and the academic context of the production. This thesis is a record of the film, from concept to completion and preparation for delivery to an audience.

The film focuses on a family torn apart by a major decision to migrate to the U.S. from Puerto Rico. The protagonist, Torres, is now trying to receive closure from the events by asking the questions he could not ask as a child, but feels compelled to ask as an adult. Filming with only one person in the crew allowed for an intimacy and spontaneity that is prized by entrepreneurial digital cinema makers. Without the financial and scheduling constraints of enlisting a large crew, the film was allowed to thrive with a spontaneous and ongoing shooting schedule, controlled entirely by one person.

Graheli, Shanti. „The circulation and collection of Italian printed books in sixteenth-century France“. Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/7809.

Annotation:
This thesis is an examination of the circulation networks and the patterns of collection of Italian printed books in France in the sixteenth century. Although the cultural relations between the Italian and French territory have been studied, a systematic survey to assess the impact of books on the shaping of the French Renaissance has never been attempted. The first section of this study examines the trade routes and networks which facilitated the circulation of Italian printed books across the French territory. Because of the nature of the French early modern book trade, focused primarily on two major centres (Paris and Lyon), a geographical division has been adopted in investigating this phenomenon. Chapter one explores the trade networks existing in sixteenth-century Lyon, from the powerful Compagnie des Libraires to the activity of the libraires italianisants in the second half of the century. Chapter two examines the importance of Italian editions in Paris. Chapter three is devoted to the circulation of Italian books in the provinces and the impact of large regional centres and trade routes on the availability of books locally. Chapter four investigates private networks and their importance in making specific texts available to French readers. The second section of this study investigates the status and importance of Italian printed books within French Renaissance libraries. Chapter five looks into the development of the French Royal library and the role played by Italian items in defining its identity as an institution. Chapter six examines the presence of Italian books in French aristocratic and courtly collections. Chapter seven is devoted to the libraries of the French literary milieu, analysing the extent to which Italian books were cherished as literary exemplars, particularly with regard to vernacular texts. Chapter eight examines the presence of Italian books in professional collections, with particular attention here given to texts in Latin and other scholarly languages imported from Italy. The conclusion draws all of these strands together, looking at the specific role played by Italian culture, through the printed book, on the development of the French Renaissance. A catalogue of about 2,400 Italian printed books with early modern French provenance is included as an appendix volume. This data provides the evidential basis for this study.

As a middle school teacher, I have often witnessed students behaving cruelly towards those that are different. When my dog became a paraplegic I was inspired to develop a project to assist young readers in the development of conscientious actions towards individuals with disabilities. This document chronicles the development, procedures, and outcomes of the process behind that artistic endeavor. The artistic elements of this thesis project are a written children's storybook and an educational interactive Web site to further teach inclusiveness to young readers. The images are real photos that have been manipulated to look like illustrations that enhance elements that are visually appealing to children in order to increase the images' communication value.
Unmissable figure in Rennes' cultural and intellectual life in the first half 18th century, Christophe-Paul de Robien was one of the great provincial scholars and collectors of his time. Amatory of arts and belles-lettres, passionate about sciences and antiquity, this Breton parliamentarian set up inside of his mansion in Rennes an incredibly diversified cabinet of curiosities. The image, and in particular the printed image, occupied a great importance at the heart of his curiosity practices. As part of an encyclopedic process of access to all of universal knowledge, the president de Robien was able to find in the print the ideal medium able to fulfilling his desire for possession, both material and intellectual. Today scattered between the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rennes, the Musée de Bretagne and Les Champs Libres's library, this collection of prints therefore deserved a complete reconstruction in order to capture the several intentions that contributed to its development. This study will also focus on the relations maintained by the magistrate with scientific imaging and the illustration practice that he may have had for his own manuscripts

Annotation:
This thesis documents my creative process as the Production Designer on the feature length micro budget film The Last Two Years of David Brachman, written and directed by Marc Casilli. The film is a dark comedy chronicling the life of David Brachman, a twenty-five year old with a stagnant life that is seemingly leading nowhere, as he pledges on his twenty-fifth birthday to change the path of his life in the next two years or commit suicide if he fails. The overall design concept of the film is rooted in realism, but allowed to contain elements that will remove the audience in order to lighten the load of the serious topic of death. With a nod to the 1950s family home and the nostalgia of decades past; David's world is created to show drastic shifts from his inert, routine life at home to the outside working world in to which he thrusts himself. The world outside of David's home is seen through a lens that exemplifies stereotypical social roles and thereby adds to his feelings of outcast and loneliness. Creating the versatile world of David Brachman presented challenges with the amount of locations, characters, and costumes changes; however, these challenges were further complicated by working on an overall micro budget of thirty-six thousand dollars, with approximately fifteen hundred dollars allocated to the art department and costuming. These challenges created a need for resourceful acquisition techniques and budgeting to ensure that the overall artistic vision was not sacrificed. Remaining true to the design aesthetic and the director's vision, my staff and I were able to overcome budgetary challenges, staffing changes that occurred during filming, and shifts in the production dynamic that created a sometimes chaotic filming environment. The careful planning and organization of each design element and their execution ensured the successful creation of David's world and a visual story to compliment the screenplay. Within this thesis I document my design process from my initial design proposal to the director through post production and final viewing of the completed film. Included here are specific details of my design process including script analysis, script breakdowns, location plots, budget tracking, stills from the film, a copy of the finished film, and all the paperwork generated in creating the film. A detailed journal of the filming process including obstacles I encountered as well as the solutions created throughout this process and a self evaluation and reflection on the final product of work are included.

Concerned about the conservation of their art collections, in the years between 1789 and 1870, Parisian amateurs called upon the services of painting restorers, who, at that time, belonged to a profession considered quite separate from that of art dealer, expert or even painter. While the restorer worked on paintings belonging to private collectors, he also acted as a guide for the latter, broadening their knowledge of Ŕ or even teaching them about Ŕ pictorial techniques. This understanding of the materiality of artworks gradually contributed to collectors being invited into museum committees as advisors, before they acquired a privileged status in museums, from the 1860s onwards, by bequeathing their collections

From the results of literary reviews, knowing that ”Unexpectancy” of Incongrancy theory can draw in the attention from consumer. But the literary is lack of the Unexpectance effect to advertising and this will be what the study want to realize. The research purpose are (1) know well the influence of unexpectancy to communication effect, (2) find out the type of unexpectancy, and (3) realize the factor which makes different feeling about unexpectancy. The study established the theory framework by literary reviews and arranged the type of unexpectancy. The type of unexpectancy are (1) Inbalance (2) Apposition (3) Replacement (4) Merge (5) Overlap (6) Situation, and realize the difference between each types. Then setting the index according to the literary reviews; “image” and “representation” are the index of unexpectancy; “Attnetion”, ” Comprehension”, ”Recall”, ”Interest”, “Like” are the index of communicate effects. The research conclusion are(1) unexpectancy of image could raise attention from consumer, and unexpectancy of representation could raise recall, interest and like from consumer. (2) “Apposition” get the great communicate effect from consumer, “Inbalance” get the highest value from the index of “Attnetion”, ”Recall”, ”Interest” and “Like”, “Replacement” get the highest value from the index of ” Comprehension”, and “Overlap” get the lowest value from each index. (3) The factors which makes the difference from unexpectancy are Types and the Background. “Inbalance” get the highest value of unexpectancy, and “Overlap” is the lowest one. Print advertisement is one of the important marketing communication tools, and it can convey merchandises’ benefit and value whether it is a physical product or impalpable service. Picture and words are the most important elements of print advertisement. This study explores the effects of picture types and word/picture concruency in print media on advertising effectiveness (including recall, attitude toward the ad, attitude toward the product, and acquaintance intention). Using college students at National Taiwan University and National Chengchi University as respondents, a 2×2 between subject experimental design was conducted. Independent varialbles were picture type (visualization versus non-visualization) and verbal/picture matching (full-congruency versus middle-congruency versus full-incongruency). The conclusions are as follows: 1. Picture type significantly influences the advertising effectiveness. Print advertisement with visualized picture results in higher level of attitude toward the product than non-visualized picture. 2. The verbal/visual matching significantly influences the advertising effectiveness. Print advertisement with verbal/visual full-incongruency results in higher level of recall than full-congruency or middle-congruency. 3. The picture type and the verbal/visual matching have interaction on advertising effectiveness. As for visualized picture type, print advertisement with verbal/visual full-incongruency results in higher level of recall than full-congruency or middle-incongruency. As for verbal/visual full-congruency, print advertisement with non-visualized picture results in higher level of recall than visualized picture. Chinese woodcut is one of the oldest prints. It has taken place since the Tang Dynasty and the development of typography has made the woodcut prints become popular. Because of its convenience, woodcut has been greatly applied to not only the sutras but the folk woodcut prints. The firm scratches of woodcuts are able to make the stories more vivid, and thus the history of illustrations is highly related to the development of woodcut prints. As time goes by, the woodcut has become an alternative of mixed media. Artists use woodcut’s unique linear texture to mix with other painting techniques and create special painting styles. Due to the progress of modern science and technology, painting technologies have been changed recently. Resin boards are new materials for making texture which is similar to that of woodcut. Then computer techniques are used to paint and print. The new way of making paintings is much more convenient and time-saving. The modern digital woodcut print has its special styles with the combination of traditional techniques and modern technology. This study uses digital woodcut techniques on the creation of the children’s picture book “Going into and out of the Town”. The book basically takes the Little North Gate as the framework, talking about the history of old streets and the relationship with the city, Tainan. Readers can realize the historical value of this route, from the Little Kuan-Ti Shrine, to Rice Street, the Shue-Zai-Wei, the Da-Chong Street, and finally to the Little North Gate, of going into and out of Tainan City during the period of Qing Dynasty. The Rice Street is the original place of folk woodcut prints in Taiwan. The author uses woodcut as the technology for the book to show the respect for the street. Furthermore, the author has been working on designing and art creation for years and trying hard to find the link between traditional technologies and innovative technologies. Therefore, the author uses woodcut first and then the digital coloring for the creation. A mixture of traditional technologies and modern computer technologies is made and created new visual effects of the beauty. This book also shows a new vision of the historical streets.

The progress of computer science and technology has a great influence on printing industry. Print has been simplified from complicated processes to three levels only, prepress, print, and postpress. But, the block out work remains an unresolved problem in the prepress. Until now, there is no scientific method to solve the block out production time. It had been always estimated according to individual experience. Since digitalization, networking and globalization are the goals for all other industries to achieve, the print industry will eventually face an impasse without a systematic and analytic method. The research attempts to accomplish a method for determine timing for block out work. Based on interviewing experts in this field and using composition theory, we try to find out factors affecting the block out timing. The statistical methods adopted in this research include One way ANOVA, T-test, F-test, and regression analysis, Through the statistical analysis of these we can correctly estimate production timing. The research result: 1.The experiment manifests the level of complication of the picture original shape will affect the production time. 2.The picture shape of block out can be analyzed with composition theory and decomposed with the basic composition elements(triangle, circle, rectangle)and constitution principle(insert, abutting). 3.The constitution picture of block out correlates with the basic composit-ion element quantity and interaction of style change. 4.The picture original of block out production timing estimate model is equal to 5.675*the quantity of the triangle+21.512* the quantity of the equal to 5.675*the quantity of the triangle+21.512* the quantity of the circle+6.469* the quantity of the rectangle+1.997* the quantity of the insert+4.488* the quantity of the rectangle abutting-2.051.

This thesis examines the historical development of the artist print collections of the Imperial War Museum and Australian War Memorial, and analyses the relationship of these collections to their institutions. Printmaking is an artistic medium that has historically been used by artists for social critique, and many high quality works of this type are present in the two collections. I argue that in both museums, when developing the print collections, curators were able to acquire beyond the strict interpretation of the museums’ collecting guidelines. As a result of this, the prints have challenged some of the more conservative underlying messages of the museums. National war museums are ideal for a study of contested histories, particularly those within their own collections, and the IWM and AWM are prominent institutions in this specialist category of museums. My hypothesis is that prints can destabilize the histories that war museums wish to present due to their historical use by artists for a variety of purposes that are somewhat unique to the medium. This is driven by the materiality of the print. This study also analyses how museum structures and internal cultures affected the development of the print collections. In particular, I have tried to answer the questions: What factors influenced the development of the print collections? And how did the professional agendas of curators inform that development? Print collecting flourished at key points in the histories of the institutions, particularly when fine art specialists were in charge of acquisitions. While print collecting broadly reflected the aims of the institutions at different times, on occasion it introduced divergent narratives into the war museums. This thesis is interdisciplinary in the way it uses a history methodology and museum studies framework. The historical research methods employed include archival research and semi-structured interviews with selected former and current museum staff. My research will add to academic and curatorial knowledge about how collections are formed in large national museums, and analyse the role and significance of two collections that have not previously been thoroughly examined. The thesis places the curator as the creator of the collection, not merely as someone who carries out instructions from management, but who negotiates between the institutional forces, social forces and the nature of the objects, to ultimately shape the collection.

Champa Kingdom established in 192 AD. In this nation, Sanskrit was spoken. Champa culture has been influenced by India. The people workshipped various religions: Champa religion, Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam. After a lot of wars, the last dynasty was been weakened and they lost their independence in1832. Champa was been merged together with Đại Việt (in the North ) into Vietnam now. The great art work in Champa''s Fine Arts are ancient brick towers and sculptures at Champa''s relics. After severy weather conditions and many wars, these art work are deteriorating. There are many Champa relic areas ( about 50 areas ). As in 1999, Mỹ Sơn has been recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site. At its 23rd meeting, UNESCO accorded Mỹ Sơn this recognition pursuant to its criterion C (II), as an example of evolution and change in culture, and pursuant to its criterion C (III), as evidence of an Asian civilization which is now extinct. We take care of ancient artistic heritage, research to find out the essence to learn and contribute to the development of art in present and in the future. Archaeologists have been researching and preserving historic monuments. I, a lecturer, is teaching in Fashion design field, realize that doing research of Champa Fine Arts and applying to modern fashion art is very important . Thenceforward, I would like to create a new suitable fashion for a modern living life This study is the first attempt to create modern fashion collection based on Champa ancient towers and Champa sculptures. The study has primary objectives: Find out a specific decorative style from architectures and sculptures of Champa, design new patterns; making woodblocks; printing patterns on fabrics and creative fashion styles. In former times, people made woodblock by hand; however, in my study, I make woodblocks by laser cut machine. I design a new fashion collection for young people because I hope them can see Champa patterns in modern styles. This study is applied in Fashion design in the context of Vietnamese''s design fields and is integrating the fashion trend of the world. So today, my fashion is included traditional and modern on new products. The textile companies in Vietnam need pattern fabrics designs relies on the Champa culture or another culture. It is very important, so, I want to introduce my pattern designs to textile companies for their printing products. I discovered many beautiful patterns from this study. My study should be explored more details and can be implemented with greater scale and linked to another design field: architecture, interior or product design of Vietnam In academic aspects, the study helps me to understand clearly about Champa culture for the purpose of my teaching. This is my way that I have chosen to spread Champa culture to young students, young people. From this point, students will create a lot of traditional products in modern life.

This thesis aims to contribute for reviewing Safety film preservation guidelines currently in practice, concerning film identification, film assessment and storage conditions in the archive, Arquivo Nacional das Imagens em Movimento (ANIM – National Archive of Moving Images), conservation center of Cinemateca Portuguesa. Since the 1980s, stability issues and degradation factors concerning the oldest type of safety film, cellulose triacetate (CTA), have been studied. Based on the results accomplished with those studies, preservation guidelines were established highlighting the advantages of low temperature and low relative humidity for film stability. Despite the guideline’s disclosure, there are practical issues, such as lack of staff, financial restraints and lack of studies regarding polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films decay, that ultimately jeopardize the preservation of motion film collections. In order to have an overall comprehension of the identification and assessment methods used, a review of relevant literature about national and international guidelines for film preservation was performed. This review endowed a broader understanding of the identification, assessment and monitorization carried out in ANIM archive. Aiming to understand preservation practices, an investigation was undertaken at ANIM. Current identification and assessment methods were reexamined, tested and reevaluated. Based on the results accomplished, new identification and assessment tools, as well as, recommendations concerning organization and storage are proposed. For the experimental part of this work, identification and assessment of film (image and sound) were performed. For this internship and study, it was decided firstly to perform the identification and assessment of 100 films and film cans according to the macro identification and macro assessment methods described in the literature. For macro assessment, Acid Detection (A-D) strips and macro signs of degradation were used to evaluate the condition of the films studied. Moreover, the macro assessment results obtained in 2006 and 2014 were also analyzed. In order to identify possible degradation trends and contribute to the review of the current preservation practice, past and present macro assessment results were compared. Additionally, new assessment methods, such as hardness measurement, hardness (Shore A), were tested. The results obtained confirmed that free acidity tests are effective methods for monitoring safety film decay. In this study it was also possible to identify degradation trends, specifically concerning magnetic tapes. Moreover, besides CTA film decay, during the macro assessment of ANIM’s collection, PET films degraded were found. Based on these results it was possible to propose a new methodology for film preservation.

The aim of this dissertation was to examine the evidence, and consider the differential diagnosis for tuberculosis (TB) in individuals from early 20th century Coimbra Human Identified Skeletal Collection (CISC), curated by the Anthropological Museum, from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology at the University of Coimbra. The methodologies were from macroscopic observation, radiological examination, biomarker analysis (mycobacterial ancient DNA amplification by PCR and mycolic acids identification by HPLC) and documentary assessment, in order to confirm the authenticity and complement the information of the CISC records. This work, based on data arising before antibiotics became available for treatment, can contribute to the future diagnosis of TB in nondocumented skeletal material, and will facilitate a more reliable diagnosis of TB in both juveniles and adult individuals, in archaeological and historical contexts.
