Violence against women is a phenomenon that in recent years a growing worldwide sensitive topic. What happens in the Albanian society is that battered women do not find support either in state institutions which are responsible for the protection of women's lives nor in social circles as the family which should show care for them on a good line. Lack of support for abused women do not report cases of violence, as it has resulted in interviews in our study. This paper examines Violence against women (VAW) takes place in different sectors in Bangladesh. There are various types of violence in our country i.e. physical, sexual, domestic violence, killing, rape etc. Socio-Economic aspect also plays a pivotal role in violence against women. There are some common features of VAW like polygamy, extra-marital or pre-marital relations, lack of social and economic security, lack of proper education and cybercrime. Unemployment is also one of the main reasons of VAW in Bangladesh. Prevention measures should be taken by family, society and also by the state machine to prevent VAW. Implementation of domestic laws of VAW and monitoring system and social awareness will be the effective measures to prevent this criminal activity from the society and from the state.

This study explored risk factors for violence among a sample of adult women with physical disabilities. Fifty-six percent (100) of the 177 women participating in the study indicated a positive history of abuse. Of the women who reported abuse, most reported multiple abuse situations and abusers who were typically their male partners. In addition, only a small proportion of women sought and received adequate help. Women who indicated that they did not seek help were asked why this was the case. Their responses included: feeling that they could handle it themselves, having other sources of support available, being unaware of where to go, feeling embarrassed, feeling guilty about being a burden or that it was their fault, fear that abuser would come after them, fear of not being believed, and, to a lesser extent, concern that the shelter would lack appropriate accommodations. These findings highlight the importance of intervention strategies including advocacy activities for women with disabilities, activities with schools, activities to deter and prevent partner and caregiver violence, community awareness activities, and dissemination activities.

This study employed both qualitative and quantitative methods to explore the views of 36 interview respondents from eight reserves and 114 survey respondents from four reserves on the problematics of implementing violence against women treatment initiatives in reserves in Alberta, Canada. In-depth interviews with a purposeful sample of care providers working in Aboriginal communities were recorded and transcribed. A qualitative approach was used to guide the thematic analysis of the data. Major themes that emerged from the respondents included: (1) the effects of a lack of trust; (2) the need for Aboriginal content and process in the design of treatment initiatives and (3) the difficulty of garnering community support to secure Aboriginal content and design for initiatives. The purpose of the survey was to provide validation of the findings from the qualitative study and to extend the knowledge gained from the interviews. This research examines the social issues that have led to and influenced the research question that are correlated with themes that emerged from the in-depth interviews. It also discusses implications for implementing violence against women treatment initiatives in small, impoverished, isolated and traumatised communities.

Treaties and international organizations work together to create a global environment that protects the rights of a person and actively promotes the well-being of society. However, they do not necessarily guarantee the rights of everyone. Since women are not explicitly named in human rights documents, they are often not granted equal human rights. Therefore, it takes more than just international legal instruments to guarantee women's rights as human rights. A combination of civil society (NGOs), International organizations (IOs), and domestic government creates a perfect coalition to beat the barriers that must be overcome to fully protect women from violence.

Background: Evidence from armed conflict settings points to high levels of intimate partner violence (IPV) against women. Current knowledge on how to prevent IPV is limited – especially within war-affected settings. This research aims to inform the prevention of IPV in conflict-affected settings, specifically identifying community exposures to violence and traumatic events and their consequences among men and women and the impact of an IPV prevention intervention in Côte d’Ivoire. Methods: This thesis represents a coordinated programme of research comprised of four studies: (1) a systematic review of violence against women (VAW) prevention interventions in conflict settings; (2) a community survey to determine community levels of exposure and perpetration of IPV, non-partner violence and traumatic events before, during and after a period of conflict; (3) a cluster randomised controlled trial to determine the added value of an IPV prevention intervention working with men; and (4) a nested cohort study to assess the gendered and temporal impact of violence and the intervention on mental health. Results: The systematic review uncovered an extensive VAW prevention programme but limited research on its effectiveness. The community survey found high levels of IPV, non-partner violence and traumatic events among women and men. Women experienced higher overall levels of violence compared with men. The cluster RCT found significant differences between men in the intervention and control groups with regard to their ability to manage conflict and their increased engagement in gender-equitable behaviours. Among women, the cohort study found that factors significantly associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) included male partner alcohol use and experience of IPV in the past year. Men were strongly protected from PTSD if they cohabitated with their female partner. A research commentary further advocates for violence prevention programming in conflict settings with attention to all forms of violence against women, including IPV. Conclusion: In conflict-affected settings, policy approaches and interventions that aim to improve the lives of survivors should work towards programming that promotes gender equality and protects women and girls from abuse.

Violence against women is considered a global issue and it denies women their most basic human right, their health. The news media have been identified as an important factor in how violence against women is interpreted and perceived by society. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate how journalists and editors in Guyana, South America, work with the coverage of violence against women. Furthermore, this thesis examines what policies and views on news value that are prominent on the newspapers and what possibilities journalists and editors experience, to make an impact on society, through their reporting. Eight qualitative in-depth interviews were carried out with editors and reporters on the three most widely spread daily newspapers in Guyana. Also a quantitative content analysis, covering January-April 2014, was performed on the same newspapers. In total 159 articles that reported on cases of violence against women were found and coded. The result indicates that the reporting in Guyana conforms to previous research. The conclusion is that when it comes to context, language and sources used, the newspapers generally fail to work with violence against women adequately. The reporting preserves and reproduces patriarchal power structures by using victim blaming or perpetrator excusing language, not covering it as a social issue and overusing official sources. Furthermore, the result indicates that there are unwritten policies on the newspapers. However, these guidelines are not always followed. The study indicates that the reporting is not given enough resources in terms of time and money, which might be a result of that reporters and editors do not experience that readers are interested enough for the topic to get sufficient resources.

This dissertation traces through history the manner in which women around the globe have been forced into subordination to man. In this context, it looks at the role played by the patriarchal system in women's subjugation and violence against women. It identifies the different faces of violence against women around the world and focuses on the various forms of violence against women. The dissertation then presents a global review of violence against women in detention and analyses the abusive use of this power by agencies of the state. To reflect how this power, lacking in accountability and deterrent force, can result in a mockery of the whole concept of justice, the dissertation reviews violence against women who are directly under the control of police--the primary law enforcement agency of the state. The dissertation uses examples the Indian sub-continent to show how the attitude of police in developing countries has, instead of controlling the violence, promoted violence against women and the impact of this attitude on the society. The dissertation analyses the general attitude of police towards violence against women; the victims' perception of the police, and the police perception of abused women on the issues of family violence. It observes that elimination of violence against women cannot be achieved through law reform alone. Proper enforcement of such reformative measures, accountability of the enforcers and condemnation of enforcers when they fail to do what is expected of them are equally important to eliminate violence against women. The dissertation concludes with the argument that under the present structure of society violence against women cannot be eliminated until the attitude of women towards their own selves is changed as well as that of men in general and police in particular, which directly affects the attitude of men towards women.

The problem of male violence against women in intimate relationships has been addressed by the feminist literature over past four decades, but little work exists on the experiences of Pakistani women. This study aimed to explore the experiences of Pakistani women in Scotland who have suffered marital violence. It was based upon feminist perspective and employed qualitative methodology. Interviews with eighteen Pakistani women were carried out. The findings from this study extend an understanding of marital violence in the context of extended family where the perpetrator of violence against a wife is not just a husband but the mother-in-law also. Thus it complicates the understanding of family as site of violence that is not dyadic in nature. The findings also reveal that women can be both victims and perpetrators in their life time when seen through their position in life cycle based hierarchies in their marital homes.

This commentary outlines how my published works have contributed to knowledge on violence against black and minority ethnic (BME) or minority women in the UK, particularly in relation to domestic violence, forced marriage and so called 'honour' based violence (HBV). They help to define and enhance our understanding of these issues. In addition, they have critiqued multiculturalism and influenced, advocated and developed the former Home Office Minister, Mike O'Brien's concept of 'mature multiculturalism' (Parliamentary Debates, 1999; also cited in Home Office, 2000:10), and utilised the theoretical framework of intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1989 and 1991) to address these problems. I have also located my works within the framework of violence against women and girls (VAWG), secularism, equalities and human rights. My publications have reflected upon and influenced policy, practice and research, and as such, contributed to documenting the history and achievements of black feminism.

Domestic violence or intimate partner violence is increasingly being recognized as a problem that seems to be spiralling out of control. The causes of domestic violence have preoccupied scientists for several decades. The hypothesis that domestic violence might be biologically determined was significantly undermined by observations that its occurrence varies considerably between, as well as within, societies. The aim of this study was to add to the growing, but still rather fragmented, body of knowledge in South Africa on violence against women. This study seeks to analyze domestic violence from an angle whereby the data can be explored to find factors contributing to women experiencing domestic violence in South Africa. The objectives of this research are to measure the prevalence of physical, sexual and financial abuse and to identify a profile of women who have experienced domestic violence.

Violence against women, which is accepted as a violation of human right in Turkey and in whole world for many years, causes physical and mental harms by practicing all kind of personal and collective behavior including force and pressure. Femicides have increased 1400% in the last seven years and one of every three women is subjected to violence. It is doubtful that in international law; Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and Council of Europe Convention and in additional to this in national law; The 1982 Constitution and The Law to Protect Family and Prevent Violence Against Women can provide effective guarantee to protect the place of woman in Turkish Society or not? Despite all of the legislative regulations, the violence against women in Turkey increasingly goes on. For this reason it is crucial to evaluate the articles no 5th, 10th, 17th, 41st and 90th of Constitution which compose the legal basis for preventing violence against women. Republic of Turkey’s founding philosophy bases on equality of women and men, which means equal rights for every single citizen. To end this violence against women; can be achieve only through provide this equality legally and defacto, and also, apply social state’s principles in real life. Because in social states, struggling against this violence should be accepted as government’s policy. The state should be in cooperation with all women's organizations and provide training for related trade bodies.

The theme of this special collection of papers, the lived experiences of women who belong to religious minorities, has been a blind spot both in international development policy engagement and in much of the international scholarship on women, security and peace. Women who belong to religious minorities, who are socioeconomically excluded and are vulnerable to multiple sources of gender-based violence in Pakistan seem to have fallen through the cracks of the ‘leave no one behind’ agenda. The aim of this volume is to shed light on the day-to-day experiences of women and their families who belong to the Ahmadiyya, Christian, Hindu and Hazara Shia religious minorities in Pakistan. Each of the papers in this collection exposes the complexity of the intersections of gender, class and religious marginality in shaping the realities for women from these religious minorities.

Annotation:
This paper provides an insight on the gender impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Caribbean. The analysis makes use of the April 2020 online COVID-19 survey that the Inter-American Development conducted in all six Caribbean Country Department member countries. We find that the pandemic is having different effects on men and women. For example, job losses have been more prevalent amongst single-females, whilst business closures have been more prevalent amongst single-males. Quality of life also seems to have worsened more for single-females than for single-males and partners (married or common law partnership) and domestic violence against women has been on the rise. Although the coverage of social assistance programs has increased substantially during the pandemic, we find that more targeting of households with single females could be beneficial, particularly as they show lower levels of financial resilience. Going forward, we recommend further gender targeting in social assistance programs and the collection of gender-disaggregated data that will allow for more thorough investigation of the gender effects of these types of shocks.
