Nine male chimpanzees originally reared in solitary cages were set up to form a group. Plasma viral load of the lymphocryptovirus (LCV) of chimpanzee [Epstein–Barr virus chimpanzee (EBVcmp)] was measured by real-time PCR. In the group formation (Form) period, the first-ranking male showed an imminent increase in plasma EBVcmp load compared with 1 week before (pre-Form) and 3 months after (post-Form) group formation. Other upper-ranking males such as the second-, third- and fourth-male also showed the highest level of viral load in the Form period. The kinetics of EBVcmp load in the Form period were statistically different from other periods (against pre-Form, t=−4.878, P<0.001; against post-Form, t=6.434, P<0.001). The effect of the male dominance rank did not differ between the pre-Form and post-Form periods (t=−1.557, P=0.12). Reactivation of LCV (EBV) as an immunological stress marker for humans might also be applied to chimpanzees.

The CDC’s Core Elements of an Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) lists intravenous (IV) to oral (PO) conversion as an important pharmacy-based intervention. However, despite the existence of a pharmacist-driven IV to PO conversion protocol, conversion rates within our healthcare system remained low. We aimed to evaluate the impact of a revision to the current conversion protocol on conversion rates, using linezolid as a marker due to its high PO bioavailability and high IV cost. This retrospective, observational study was conducted within a healthcare system composed of five adult acute care facilities. The conversion eligibility criteria were evaluated and revised on 30 November 2021. The pre-intervention period started February 2021 and ended November 2021. The post-intervention period was December 2021 to March 2022. The primary objective of this study was to establish if there was a difference in PO linezolid utilization reported as days of therapy per 1000 days present (DOT/1000 DP) between the pre- and post-intervention periods. IV linezolid utilization and cost savings were investigated as secondary objectives. The average DOT/1000 DP for IV linezolid decreased from 52.1 to 35.4 in the pre- and post-intervention periods, respectively (p < 0.01). Inversely, the average DOT/1000 DP for PO linezolid increased from 38.9 in the pre-intervention to 58.8 for the post-intervention period, p < 0.01. This mirrored an increase in the average percentage of PO use from 42.9 to 62.4% for the pre- and post-intervention periods, respectively (p < 0.01). A system-wide cost savings analysis showed projected total annual cost savings of USD 85,096.09 for the system, with monthly post-intervention savings of USD 7091.34. The pre-intervention average monthly spend on IV linezolid at the academic flagship hospital was USD 17,008.10, which decreased to USD 11,623.57 post-intervention; a 32% reduction. PO linezolid spend pre-intervention was USD 664.97 and increased to USD 965.20 post-intervention. The average monthly spend on IV linezolid for the four non-academic hospitals was USD 946.36 pre-intervention, which decreased to USD 348.99 post-intervention; a 63.1% reduction (p < 0.01). Simultaneously, the average monthly spend for PO linezolid was USD 45.66 pre-intervention and increased to USD 71.19 post-intervention (p = 0.03) This study shows the significant impact that an ASP intervention had on IV to PO conversion rates and subsequent spend. By revising criteria for IV to PO conversion, tracking and reporting results, and educating pharmacists, this led to significantly more PO linezolid use and reduced the overall cost in a large healthcare system.

Abstract. We present the first real-time composition of submicron particulate matter (PM1) in Old Delhi using high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometry (HR-AMS). Old Delhi is one of the most polluted locations in the world, and PM1 concentrations reached ∼ 750 µg m−3 during the most polluted period, the post-monsoon period, where PM1 increased by 188 % over the pre-monsoon period. Sulfate contributes the largest inorganic PM1 mass fraction during the pre-monsoon (24 %) and monsoon (24 %) periods, with nitrate contributing most during the post-monsoon period (8 %). The organics dominate the mass fraction (54 %–68 %) throughout the three periods, and, using positive matrix factorisation (PMF) to perform source apportionment analysis of organic mass, two burning-related factors were found to contribute the most (35 %) to the post-monsoon increase. The first PMF factor, semi-volatility biomass burning organic aerosol (SVBBOA), shows a high correlation with Earth observation fire counts in surrounding states, which links its origin to crop residue burning. The second is a solid fuel OA (SFOA) factor with links to local open burning due to its high composition of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and novel AMS-measured marker species for polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs). Two traffic factors were resolved: one hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA) factor and another nitrogen-rich HOA (NHOA) factor. The N compounds within NHOA were mainly nitrile species which have not previously been identified within AMS measurements. Their PAH composition suggests that NHOA is linked to diesel and HOA to compressed natural gas and petrol. These factors combined make the largest relative contribution to primary PM1 mass during the pre-monsoon and monsoon periods while contributing the second highest in the post-monsoon period. A cooking OA (COA) factor shows strong links to the secondary factor, semi-volatility oxygenated OA (SVOOA). Correlations with co-located volatile organic compound (VOC) measurements and AMS-measured organic nitrogen oxides (OrgNO) suggest SVOOA is formed from aged COA. It is also found that a significant increase in chloride concentrations (522 %) from pre-monsoon to post-monsoon correlates well with SVBBOA and SFOA, suggesting that crop residue burning and open waste burning are responsible. A reduction in traffic emissions would effectively reduce concentrations across most of the year. In order to reduce the post-monsoon peak, sources such as funeral pyres, solid waste burning and crop residue burning should be considered when developing new air quality policy.

Background: Hypomagnesemia is an important but unknown risk factor for post-operative complications in patients undergoing surgery for presumed gynecological malignancy. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of hypomagnesemia in patients undergoing surgery for presumed gynecological cancers referred to our tertiary care Cancer Institute. Methods: This is a prospective observational study of 100 patients admitted with provisional diagnosis of malignancy. They underwent surgery in one of the Gynecologic Oncology units at The Gujarat Cancer Research Institute, Ahmedabad from October 2016 to April 2017. Hypomagnesemia was defined a serum magnesium levels less than 1.8mg/dl.Results: The incidence of pre-operative hypomagnesemia in the entire cohort was 35%. Sixty three percent patients had normal pre-operative magnesium levels and hypermagnesemia was seen in 2% of study population. Patients with benign disease had 29.6% pre-operative hypomagnesemia compared with 39.6% in patients with gynecologic malignancy. Pre-operative hypomagnesemia and even falling levels in post-operative period are an important predictive marker for post-operative complications like increased post-operative pain, post-operative ileus, hypertension and even post-operative hypokalemia. Age, body mass index, hematocrit, surgical indication and length of hospital stay were not associated with hypomagnesemia. Patients undergoing neo-adjuvant chemotherapy before surgery had significant incidence of hypomagnesemia both pre-operatively and post-operatively.Conclusions: Hypomagnesemia is quite prevalent in patients of gynecologic-oncology undergoing surgery. Pre-operative hypomagnesemia and even falling levels in post-operative period have a bearing on the final surgical outcome. Hence pre-operative and post-operative magnesium levels may be included as a valuable marker in all patients undergoing surgery for gynecologic malignancy.

Ketosis is a common nutritional, metabolic disease during the perinatal period in dairy cows characterized by elevated blood β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA). In this study, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was performed to investigate adaptive changes in adipose tissue during the perinatal period of dairy cows. Blood and tailhead subcutaneous white adipose tissue (sWAT) were obtained from ketotic cows (Ket = 8, BHBA ≥ 1.4 mmol/L) and non-ketotic cows (Nket = 6, BHBA < 1.4 mmol/L) 21 d pre-partum and 10 d post-partum. Compared with pre-partum, decreased lipid synthesis due to down-regulation of PCK1 may be in a strong association with clinical ketosis. Simultaneously, PCK2 was downregulated in the Ket postnatally compared to its expression prenatally, and the expression of PCK2 was 2.7~4.2 times higher than that of PCK1, implying a more severe lipid storage impairment in the Ket. Moreover, compared to pre-partum, the upregulated differentially expressed genes post-partum in the Ket were enriched in the inflammatory response biological process. The higher expression of TNC (tenascin C) in the post-partum Ket relative to the Nket suggested that the adipose tissue of ketotic cows might also be accompanied by tissue fibrosis. Notably, pre-partum CD209 was higher in the Ket than in the Nket, which might be used as a candidate marker for the pre-partum prediction of ketosis. Combined with published gene expression traits, these results suggested that inflammation leads to a more widespread downregulation of the lipid synthesis gene network in adipose tissue in ketotic cows. Additionally, sWAT in post-partum cows with ketosis might also be accompanied by tissue fibrosis which could make the treatment of ketosis more difficult.

Migraine attacks can cause significant discomfort and reduced functioning for days at a time, including the pre-ictal and post-ictal periods. During the inter-ictsal period, however, migraineurs seem to function normally. It is puzzling, therefore, that event-related potentials of migraine patients often differ in the asymptomatic and inter-ictal period. Part of the electrophysiological dynamics demonstrated in the migraine cycle are attention related. In this pilot study we evaluated an easy-to-use new marker, the Brain Engagement Index (BEI), for attention monitoring during the migraine cycle. We sampled 12 migraine patients for 20 days within one calendar month. Each session consisted of subjects’ reports of stress level and migraine-related symptoms, and a 5 min EEG recording, with a 2-electrode EEG device, during an auditory oddball task. The first minute of the EEG sample was analyzed. Repetitive samples were also obtained from 10 healthy controls. The brain engagement index increased significantly during the pre-ictal (p ≈ 0.001) and the ictal (p ≈ 0.020) periods compared with the inter-ictal period. No difference was observed between the pre-ictal and ictal periods. Control subjects demonstrated intermediate Brain Engagement Index values, that is, higher than inter-ictal, yet lower than pre-ictal. Our preliminary results demonstrate the potential advantage of the use of a simple EEG system for improved prediction of migraine attacks. Further study is required to evaluate the efficacy of the Brain Engagement Index in monitoring the migraine cycle and the possible effects of interventions.

AbstractObjective:The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of mandatory iodine fortification of bread on the iodine status of South Australian populations using newborn thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration as a marker.Design:The study used an interrupted time-series design.Setting:TSH data collected between 2005 and 2016 (n 211 033) were extracted from the routine newborn screening programme in South Australia for analysis. Iodine deficiency is indicated when more than 3 % of newborns have TSH > 5 mIU/l.Participants:Newborns were classified into three groups: the pre-fortification group (those born before October 2009); the transition group (born between October 2009 and June 2010); and the post-fortification group (born after June 2010).Results:The percentage of newborns with TSH > 5 mIU/l was 5·1, 6·2 and 4·6 % in the pre-fortification, transition and post-fortification groups, respectively. Based on a segmented regression model, newborns in the post-fortification period had a 10 % lower risk of having TSH > 5 mIU/l than newborns in the pre-fortification group (incidence rate ratio (IRR) = 0·90; 95 % CI 0·87, 0·94), while newborns in the transitional period had a 22 % higher risk of having TSH > 5 mIU/l compared with newborns in the pre-fortification period (IRR = 1·22; 95 % CI 1·13, 1·31).Conclusions:Using TSH as a marker, South Australia would be classified as mild iodine deficiency post-fortification in contrast to iodine sufficiency using median urinary iodine concentration as a population marker. Re-evaluation of the current TSH criteria to define iodine status in populations is warranted in this context.

This study uses a narrative analytic approach to explore the similarities and differences between pre-Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment firsthand accounts of madness in order to answer the question; what is the relationship between madness, narrative, understanding, identity and recovery? Drawing on the work of Foucault, the research traces the historical and cultural development of conceptualisations of reason and unreason, the rise of psychiatry and the marginalisation of the voice of madness. I argue that this marginalisation is continued in narrative research where the focus is on the stories of the physically ill, rather than madness. The narrative method provides a means of giving space to these marginalised voices and it is Bakhtin's constructs of dialogicism, polyphony, unfinalizability and the chronotope that provide the tools for the narrative analysis of two female English writers; Margery Kempe and Mary Barnes. The analysis highlights three critical issues in relation to firsthand narratives of madness. First, the blurred boundaries between madness and mysticism and the role of metaphor in understanding distressing experiences. Second, the complex, multi-dimensional nature of subjective timespace that challenges the linear assumptions underlying both narrative and recovery, which, I argue, demands a radical reconceptualisation of both constructs. Third, the liminal social positioning within the analysed accounts is closely related to Bakhtin's notion of unfinalizability, a form of being that enables the search for meaning and the transformation of the self. Insights can be gained from this research that may place stories and understanding central in contemporary healthcare.

In this thesis, I explore if Latvia has experienced, during the last ten years, a change in identity and threat perception that could allow for the building of a “cooperative security community” in Northern Europe. Recent constructivist researches contend that such change is in progress in neighboring Estonia. This research, performed through a discourse analysis of political elite’s speeches, reveals the presence – explained by the concept of interim inconsequentiality - of two opposite identity/security discourses. I link the first, inclusive, discourse to Latvia’s Western socialization, but not to a change in identity, as I contend that both threat images and identity have been instrumentalized for the sake of the accession strategy. As for the second, exclusionary, discourse that shows a persistent distrust of both Russia and the ethnic Russian minorities, and is the more prevalent in terms of political behavior, I link it to Latvia’s identity as a small ethnic nation vulnerable to external pressures - an identity strengthened during the period by Russia’s behavior. I verify this thesis by exposing the exclusionary discourse’s salience on the EU integration issue. I conclude that the period of reference, far from resolving the security dilemma, has, on the contrary, reinforced it.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Primary Health Care (PHC) approach is currently receiving tremendous attention worldwide as a mechanism to ensure effective and efficient public health services. The concept has evolved from the Alma Ata conference (1978). Since then many countries began to reorient their health services to achieve the goals of availability, accessibility and affordability of health care for all citizens and a number of management issues came to the forefront. Therefore, the provision of comprehensive PHC services is the key aspect to improving health services. A district health system has been identified as an ideal model for comprehensive PHC services to all the citizens in South Africa. Public health services in the Cape Metropolitan Area are characterised by functional fragmentation. Two public authorities render Primary Health Care services, namely the: Provincial Administration of the Western Cape through CHSO, and the Municipal Health Department. The fragmented nature of the public health services, which result in poor coordination of service delivery between the two health authorities, compromises the quality of service delivery. Historically, PHC services in the Cape Metropolitan Area - and indeed in the whole South Africa - have developed in a skewed manner. This work is an attempt at conceptualising the implications and consequences of this skewed health development. South Africa is presently undergoing fundamental reform, which has brought the PHC into disarray of fundamental change. Since the South African health care system is a highly complex institution, attempts have been made to critically analyse those aspects and features of inequality, inaccessibility, and inequity. Among these is the historical and present development of Cape Metropolitan Area health care and the structural features it assumed with the passing of time, trends and characteristics. In order to examine the theory in practice, the evolvement of PHC in the Cape Metropolitan Area will be analysed. The analysis highlights how different political formations have affected the development of PHC services and points out obstacles and limitations throughout the process, which had to be dealt with. Transformation of the existing health services, based on the principles of PHC, requires the redressing the imbalances of the past. Therefore, the integration of the two health authorities into one entity would best achieve the principles of district health system and will ensure comprehensive PRe.

In the contemporary political setting, the emergence of transnationalism represents a significant challenge to traditional state-centred depictions of international relations and raises many questions concerning its purpose, legitimacy and effects. This study is concerned with one aspect of the transnational debate: the dynamics of power that drive consensus formation within informal, and collaborative, elite transnational networks. Situated in debates related to international relations, political economy, policy science, political sociology and social network theory, this study identifies the role played by transnational elites in articulating, as well as interpreting, structural determinants of policy. In short, transnational elite interactions are responsible, often unconsciously, for the legitimisation of pervasive social constructs within the wider elite community. The process of legitimisation within such settings is highly contested and, as a consequence, power relations are critical to our understanding of eventual consensus. Utilising Steven Lukes’s (1974) third dimensional form of power, this study considers the discrete mechanisms of preference formation at play within transnational elite networks. Exploring processes of socialisation, acculturation, familiarisation and fraternisation within such communities, the complex, and highly personal, demands of elite membership are revealed. The study suggests that these demands have a considerable bearing upon the nature and substance of consensus formation activity within elite networks. It also makes clear, however, that any resulting consensus is far from absolute and highly idiosyncratic. This qualitative study is the first of its kind concerned with the interactions of transnational elites. It reports the findings of interviews conducted with sixteen members of the Atlantic transnational network – arguably the most powerful and interconnected of all transnational networks. In presenting an analysis of the first-hand accounts of these individuals, and exploring the dynamics of power within such a context, this study represents an original contribution to knowledge in the field.

Abstract: Gray mold, caused by Botrytis cinerea Pers, is the main postharvest decay of table grapes. The use of sulfur dioxide (SO2) is the common post-harvest practice for its control. Several researchers are looking for alternative methods of control, because SO2 can cause allergic reactions, damage fruits and also it cannot be applied in organic production system. In this thesis, it was evaluated the effects of applying an atmosphere of 40% CO2 for 24 or 48 hours (pre-storage) combined with controlled atmosphere storage (CA = 12% O2 + 12% CO2) in the control of B. cinerea, and the effects in the quality and sensory attributes of 'Flame Seedless' and 'Crimson Seedless' table grapes. In addition, it was evaluated the efficacy of CaCl2 or ClO2 application in pre-harvest alone or in combination with pre-storage of 40% CO2 for 24 h + CA, to control gray mold on 'Crimson Seedless' table grapes, and the determination of the impact of these treatments on fruit quality. The treatments were applied in certified organic table grapes naturally infected, surface inoculated and nesting inoculated (inoculated with an infected berry). After 4 weeks of storage, the pre-storage in 40% CO2 for 48 hours + CA reduced postharvest rot from 22% to 0.6%, and after 7 weeks, the decay was reduced from 100% to 7.4% in 'Flame Seedless' naturally infected. The pre-storage in 40% CO2 alone also reduced the incidence of gray mold in fruits naturally infected and in artificially inoculated, but it was less effective than combined treatment. The application of CaCl2 or ClO2 pre-harvest reduced the incidence of gray mold on grapes 'Crimson Seedless' inoculated with a spore solution, but there was no control when fruits were nesting inoculated. After 6 weeks at 0oC, the application of CaCl2, and the ClO2 in fruits surface inoculated, reduced the gray mold from 45% to 23.2% and 15.6%, respectively. The pretreatment with 40% CO2 + CA did not affect quality and nor sensory attributes for both varieties tested. In vitro experiments, the treatment with 40% CO2 for 24 or 48 h limited mycelial growth for at least 72 hours after treatment. Conidial germination of B. cinerea was delayed for 12 hours. Our results showed the potential that pre-treatment with 40% CO2 associated with CA has to be adopted in commercial practice for preservation of organic grapes

Abstract Rice (Oryza sative L.) is the most important crop in the world. With the progress of time, the food safety has become one of the major problems of concern. The experiment used four rice Taiwanese varieties TNG71, TN11, TK9, TK14. Rice plants were sprayed once a mixture pesticide at the ripening stage. After application, grain rice and brown rice were harvested at a different day respectively. The investigation revealed not only pesticide residue but also the appearance of all varieties of grain size characteristics relation with pesticide residue. At the results showed that the appearance of the four rice grains size characteristics and pesticide residues no significant correlation. However, according to the days passed, pesticide residue decline from application day by degree. Then most of decline curve model corresponded to the exponential decay. In addition, from general farmers get grain rice were invested a used pesticide and pesticide residue. On the base of two experiments, these results suggest that the use of appropriate pesticides will be a decrease in pesticide residue in rice.

During last four decades the world has been significantly impacted by globalization and rapid technological changes. This in turn had major effects on the global economy. Several developing and socialist economies that earlier followed closed door and import substitution policies started to open their economies to world trade and investments. Some such countries, as India, managed to achieve a degree of economic prosperity over the last few years after opening their economy. The analyses in this book show that there are significant benefits from international trade and investment to emerging economies that possess critical-level initial conditions in technology, infrastructure, and ease of doing business, and have friendly policies. Focusing on Indian firms, the book spans the period from the pre-reform era to the post-reform era, when the market was responding to policy reforms and global market dynamics. It analyses firm-level behaviour with systematic theory and corresponding rigorous econometrics and qualitative information from field study across the country. In the Pre-reforms era, it was mostly small and medium scale firms that contributed to exports while most large firms were inward oriented in search of monopoly profits. This changed significant in the Post-reform era owing increased competitive conditions especially multinational firms. Large firms started to play important role in international trade and investment behaviour by acquiring world class technology and organizational practices.

AbstractDistance education (DE) has evolved over numerous generations, from correspondence study to the most recent online education, which is classified as open, distance, and digital education (ODDE). DE advances in line with technological advancements, and DE generations often correspond to the pre- and post-Internet eras. This classification also affects and prescribes the learning environment required to ensure the educational and learning process’ effectiveness. The pre-Internet period of DE was marked by a vast physical infrastructure, including a physical network of regional, local offices, and learning centers, as was widely implemented by distance teaching universities. Soft infrastructure, such as a digital learning environment, characterizes the ODDE in the Internet era. Despite the differences in ODDE infrastructure before and after the Internet, library services and a quality assurance system have always been essential components of the ODDE system. The global open movement has had an impact on ODDE practice, expanding learning resources beyond those generated by ODDE providers. The open education movement has given ODDE more supporting infrastructures, allowing it to become more powerful and cost-effective. Finally, the burgeoning metaverse appears to be destined to become the future ODDE platform, elevating ODDE practice to new heights. This chapter discusses some trends and debates about the nature of institutional infrastructure before and after the Internet era, a cross-generational supporting infrastructure related to quality assurance, as well as learning resources particularly those related to the open educational resources (OER) and open licenses, and some thoughts on the metaverse as an emerging trend in education.

Tourism is considered one of the most dynamic sectors of the economy and is an essential element for countries that have significant tourism resources that can be exploited. The rational use of tourism resources is closely related to the increase in tourist flows and the number of accommodation establishments, i.e. tourism demand and tourism supply. The article deals with the relationship between tourist demand and tourist supply, using the example of destinations in Romania, and aims to identify destinations where there is a balance between accommodation units and overnight stays, and how to intervene to reduce the gaps between them. In this sense, quantitative methods such as Spearman and Kendall indicators were used to rank these destinations based on the statistical data provided by Tempo online during the period 2000-2021 for two periods 2000-2019 and 2019-2021. The research results show that highly specialized destinations are the most affected by seasonality. A solution to remedy this situation could come from Destination Management Organizations (DMOs). The study addresses the issue in a crucial period for tourism worldwide, not only in Romania, namely the period characterized by the pandemic COVID -19. Thus, both the period before the pandemic, when tourism reached its highest level, and the period after the pandemic, when a return to a normal situation, but marked by profound changes, is observed, are evaluated. The novelty of the article consists in the creation of a consolidated relationship between the destinations in Romania and the eight DMOs recently established in Romania, in order to allow a better management of the tourist activities.

In the post-socialist period, there were many changes in the post-Yugoslav region. The dissolution of the state and the civil war were just some of the most important events. The successor states went through the post-socialist transition at a different pace. The political and economic transition had a significant impact on the social status of the population. According to numerous international urban studies, there is a causal relationship between the social status of the population and the housing situation. Looking at the social status of the population in Belgrade, it is obvious that the social status decreases from the centre to the periphery. The housing situation in Belgrade is very heterogeneous. First, there is a historical centre filled with buildings from different eras: from the pre-World War II period, from the socialist period and from the post-socialist period. Secondly, there are socialist neighbourhoods that surround the historic core of the city. Finally, there are the neighbourhoods on the periphery, which are mostly informally built. The withdrawal of the state and the reintroduction of market mechanisms in the housing sector, drastic proportions of owner-occupied housing, the expansion of illegal construction activity, international isolation during the 1990s and the subsequent reconnection to the global economy, albeit with extremely weakened institutions, characterised post-socialist housing and urban development in Belgrade. Added to this was another wave of demographic pressure from the former Yugoslav republics and Kosovo. Through the lens of social status and housing situation, we observe the patterns of residential segregation in the post-socialist period. Due to the incomparability of statistical data from different periods, we use a combination of sources and research approaches. The first two decades of the post-socialist period were analysed at the level of census units, using data on the education of the population as a proxy for their social status.

Tourism in Georgia is one of the most important sectors of National Economy that severely damaged by COVID-19 pandemic. Adverse epidemiologic circumstances placed the development of tourism business under the threat. As the COVID-19 Pandemic had step-by-step reduced and came to the end the tourism begun to arise. For today the actors of tourism industry should discuss and elaborate the measures to solve the global problems could take place in the future. Today, in the conditions of weakening of COVID-19 pandemic propagation and eliminating some prohibitions for citizens everyday life and lifestyle, there is a huge amount of delayed demand in tourism. At the same time the fear to the big volumes of people mass tourism, most likely, will become more and more individualized, the popularity of ecological tourism will rise, especially at special protected areas of the country, those also had a great potential of development for our country in pre-pandemic period. The article discusses some problems; those restrain further development of the ecological tourism at special protected areas in Georgia. The Scientific-methodological recommendations were elaborated based on analyze, to help the development the ecological tourism market and solve the problems constrain the development of this type of tourism in Georgia.

Value at Risk (VAR) is a frequently used risk measure. Its concept based on determination of maximal loss for predetermined level of certainty is easy to understand. It is often used by various corporate professionals to measure different risks in the company, but predominantly banking and investment sector is responsible for growth of this approach. The rapid growth of instruments in financial market, support growth of VAR estimation methods, as well as methods for proper validation of this models. Presented paper goes beyond traditional financial instruments and tries to assess usefulness of three different VAR estimation models in cryptocurrency market. The motivation behind this research is to determine whether Normal, Historical or EWMA approaches of VAR estimation can be used for determination of maximal loss in cryptocurrency market with 95% and 99% probability. The performance of these VAR model is measure by number of violations and four different backtests: Basel’s Traffic light approach, Binomial test, POF test and TBF test. The results showed that performance of these VAR models differs based on the type of cryptocurrency and that VAR models perform differently at pre-COVID-19 and during COVID19 period.

Currently, the economic situation of several states on the globe has taken on alarming shapes. The increase in economic vulnerability, against the background of the sharp increase in the cost of energy resources, the global pandemic, the economic crisis generated by the war in Ukraine, the increase in geopolitical tensions in several regions of the world, have led economic entities of different sizes to review their strategy economic development, including structural transformations and traditional markets through foreign trade. The transformations in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, affected by the regional crisis, marked by socio-economic instability, already for more than half a year, are significant. Among the common problems faced by the human settlements in both countries are: the permanent economic adaptation to the changes in the conjuncture, the adjustment of the way of capitalizing the spatial resources by these two administrative-territorial entities, the implementation of economic, administrative and spatial decentralization, etc. The comparative study carried out through this research is part of a larger research of two Romanian cities located in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, being the subject of the doctoral study.

Abstract Graphitization behavior of water-atomized cast iron powder at each thermal spraying step, such as droplet flight, droplet impingement and splat layering, was successively examined. Both as-atomized cast iron powder and coatings sprayed with the powder contain no graphite structure owing to their rapid solidification. A short period of pre-annealing at 1173 K allows the formation of graphite structure in the cast iron powder, in which there exist precipitated graphite of 3.58 mass%. The microstructure observation exhibits that pre-existed pores in the as-atomized powder strongly affect the precipitating sites of graphite, that is, mainly inside the individual powder instead of the surface. However, marked reduction in graphite structure occurs to coatings sprayed with the pre-annealed powder because of in-flight burning and dissolution into molten iron. In-process post-annealing at 773 K for 60 s reveals the formation of graphite structure resulted from the decomposition of iron based metastable carbide in splats and coatings sprayed with the as-atomized powder. Chemical analysis demonstrates that graphitization level of post-annealed cast iron coatings is higher than that of coatings sprayed with the pre-annealed powder. Precipitated intersplat graphite structure of 1.68 mass% appears in cast iron coatings when introducing methane as a powder feeding carrier gas which is liable to decompose in plasma flame. The resultant coatings with graphite structure embedded in hard matrix are anticipated to offer superior wear resistance in comparison to centrifugally cast iron containing flaky graphite of 1.76 mass%.

The main objective of this research is to estimate whether portfolio diversification is feasible in the financial markets of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand (ASEAN-5), and the market of China, in the context of the stock market crash in China in 2015. The purpose is to answer two questions, namely whether: (i) has the stock market crash in China increased financial integration in the ASEAN-5 financial markets and China? (ii) If the presence of long memories may put in question the diversification of portfolios? The results suggest that these markets are segmented, except for Malaysia/Singapore, bi-directional, and China/Filipinas, pre-crash. However, when analysing the stock market crash period, the results indicate 16 integrated market pairs with structure breakdown (in 30 possible). When compared with the previous sub-period it was found that during the stock market crash the level of financial integration increased significantly (533%). In the post-crash period, there were right integrated market pairs with broken structure. When compared to the crash period, the level of integration decreased in 50%. In addition, we observed that during the stock market crash these Asian markets did not have long memories, except for the Malaysian market, which reveals some predictability, that is, the increase in integration does not lead to persistence in these Asian markets. In conclusion, the ASEAN-5 markets and China mostly exhibit strong signs of efficiency in their weak form. The authors consider that the implementation of portfolio diversification strategies is beneficial for investors. These conclusions also open space for market regulators to take action to ensure better information between these regional markets and international markets.

Abstract The excellent wear-resistant performance of cast iron coatings considerably depends on the formation of graphite structure with an inherent self-lubricating property. In the present study, two types of cast iron powders produced by gas- (GA) and water-atomization (WA) were deposited on an aluminium alloy substrate by atmospheric DC plasma spraying. WA powders are generally characterized by high oxygen content, irregular appearance and inexpensiveness compared with those of GA powders. Although alloying elements of silicon and aluminium work as a strong graphitizer and anti-oxidizer, graphite structures are not recognized in coatings sprayed with as-atomized high silicon and aluminium powders. Therefore, either pre-annealing of powders or post-annealing of coatings is required to achieve cast iron coatings containing graphite structure. A marked decrease in graphite occurs to the coatings with pre-annealed GA powder, since there exists precipitated graphite mainly on a GA powder surface. A short period of post-annealing is also valuable for graphitization. The weak oxide layers are observed in coating cross-sections with GA and WA powder, however, their oxidized levels are much lower than those with bearing steel powder containing low silicon and aluminium. Hence, graphitized cast iron coatings sprayed with inexpensive WA powder exhibit a splendid anti-wear performance.

The Design Basis Accident (DBA) qualification of SL I coatings for the AP1000 did not initially include post-DBA submergence conditions. Submergence testing was performed using a standard test (Reference 2). Test articles were carbon steel coupons coated with one of two coating SL I coating systems; an untopcoated inorganic zinc system (Carboline Carbozinc® 11 HSN2) and a system consisting of inorganic zinc and an epoxy (Carboline Carboguard® 890N3) topcoat. Half of the inorganic zinc samples tested were irradiated to a total accumulated dose of approximately 1×109 rads prior to submergence testing. Autoclaves were used to simulate the post-LOCA environment inside of the AP1000 containment. The working fluid was a boric acid solution buffered with trisodium phosphate (TSP) to a pH of approximately 7.8. The pressure and fluid temperature inside of the autoclaves was regulated to begin at ambient conditions followed by a pressurization and heat up following pressure and temperature conditions calculated for a cold leg break LOCA for the AP1000 plant, plus an added 10% margin, and the slowly decrease over the 30 day test period to saturation temperature at about 20 psia, simulating a cool-down of the AP1000 plant. Coolant samples of the autoclave inventory were taken and evaluated for dissolved chemical species at specific time intervals during the test. Following exposure to the submerged test environment, each coupon was visually inspected immediately following removal from the autoclaves and was inspected again several days after completion of the test cycle for signs of blistering, rusting, lifting, peeling, discoloration, softening, etching, wrinkling, cracking, swelling, dissolving, delamination, and changes in gloss relative to their observed pre-test condition.

: The necessity to improve broiler thermotolerance and performance led to the following hypothesis: (a) thethermoregulatory-response threshold for heat production can be altered by thermal manipulation (TM) during incubation so as to improve the acquisition of thermotolerance in the post-hatch broiler;and (b) TM during embryogenesis will improve myoblast proliferation during the embryonic and post-hatch periods with subsequent enhanced muscle growth and meat production. The original objectives of this study were as follow: 1. to assess the timing, temperature, duration, and turning frequency required for optimal TM during embryogenesis; 2. to evaluate the effect of TM during embryogenesis on thermoregulation (heat production and heat dissipation) during four phases: (1) embryogenesis, (2) at hatch, (3) during growth, and (4) during heat challenge near marketing age; 3. to investigate the stimulatory effect of thermotolerance on hormones that regulate thermogenesis and stress (T₄, T₃, corticosterone, glucagon); 4. to determine the effect of TM on performance (BW gain, feed intake, feed efficiency, carcass yield, breast muscle yield) of broiler chickens; and 5. to study the effect of TM during embryogenesis on skeletal muscle growth, including myoblast proliferation and fiber development, in the embryo and post-hatch chicks. This study has achieved all the original objectives. Only the plasma glucagon concentration (objective 3) was not measured as a result of technical obstacles. Background to the topic: Rapid growth rate has presented broiler chickens with seriousdifficulties when called upon to efficiently thermoregulate in hot environmental conditions. Being homeotherms, birds are able to maintain their body temperature (Tb) within a narrow range. An increase in Tb above the regulated range, as a result of exposure to environmental conditions and/or excessive metabolic heat production that often characterize broiler chickens, may lead to a potentially lethal cascade of irreversible thermoregulatory events. Exposure to temperature fluctuations during the perinatal period has been shown to lead to epigenetic temperature adaptation. The mechanism for this adaptation was based on the assumption that environmental factors, especially ambient temperature, have a strong influence on the determination of the “set-point” for physiological control systems during “critical developmental phases.” In order to sustain or even improve broiler performance, TM during the period of embryogenesis when satellite cell population normally expand should increase absolute pectoralis muscle weight in broilers post-hatch. Major conclusions: Intermittent TM (39.5°C for 12 h/day) during embryogenesis when the thyroid and adrenal axis was developing and maturing (E7 to E16 inclusive) had a long lasting thermoregulatory effect that improved thermotolerance of broiler chickens exposed to acute thermal stress at market age by lowering their functional Tb set point, thus lowering metabolic rate at hatch, improving sensible heat loss, and significantly decreasing the level of stress. Increased machine ventilation rate was required during TM so as to supply the oxygen required for the periods of increased embryonic development. Enhancing embryonic development was found to be accomplished by a combination of pre-incubation heating of embryos for 12 h at 30°C, followed by increasing incubation temperature to 38°C during the first 3 days of incubation. It was further facilitated by increasing turning frequency of the eggs to 48 or 96 times daily. TM during critical phases of muscle development in the late-term chick embryo (E16 to E18) for 3 or 6 hours (39.5°C) had an immediate stimulatory effect on myoblast proliferation that lasted for up to two weeks post-hatch; this was followed by increased hypertrophy at later ages. The various incubation temperatures and TM durations focused on the fine-tuning of muscle development and growth processes during late-term embryogenesis as well as in post-hatch chickens.

The development of unconventional hydrocarbon resources in the Norman Wells region of the Central Mackenzie Valley, Northwest Territories, has been explored by the energy industry. In early 2014, Conoco-Philips Canada conducted two multi-stage test operations of hydraulic fracturing (HF) in the region. In this study, we combine seismic data from the Canadian National Seismograph Network, four new stations established by the Northwest Territories Geoscience Office in collaboration with Natural Resources Canada in the Norman Wells region, and a local dense array installed by Conoco-Philips Canada to study the seismicity distribution during the pre-HF, HF and post-HF periods. We have identified and located 130 earthquakes within 100 km of the geographic centre of the local seismic network near Norman Wells for the pre-HF period (11 September 2013 - 7 February 2014). In comparison, 231 events are located during the HF period (8 February 2014 - 10 March 2014), and for the two post-HF periods, 11 March 2014 - 31 July 2014 and 27 February 2015 - 31 December 2015, we have catalogued 255 and 138 events, respectively. Source parameters and detailed phase pickings of each earthquake are given in the Appendices.

The US Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District, nourishes gravel downstream of Howard Hanson Dam (HHD) on the Green River in Washington State. The study team developed numerical models to support the ongoing salmonid habitat improvement mission downstream of HHD. Recent advancements in computing and numerical modeling software make long-term simulations in steep, gravel, cobble, and boulder river environments cost effective. The team calibrated mobile-bed, sediment-transport models for the pre-dam and post-dam periods. The modeling explored geomorphic responses to flow and sediment regime changes associated with HHD construction and operation. The team found that pre-dam conditions were significantly more dynamic than post-dam conditions and may have had lower spawning habitat quality in the project vicinity. The team applied the Bank Stability and Toe Erosion Model to the site and then calibrated to the post-dam gravel augmentation period. The team implemented a new hiding routine in HEC-RAS that improved the simulated grain size trends but underestimated coarse sediment transport. Models without the hiding function overestimated grain size but matched bed elevations and mass flux very well. Decade-long simulations of four future gravel nourishment conditions showed continued sediment storage in the reach. The storage rate was sensitive to nourishment mass and grain size.

The necessity to improve broiler thermotolerance and live performance led to the following hypothesis: Appropriate comprehensive incubation treatments that include significant temperature management changes will promote angiogenesis and will improve acquisition of thermotolerance and carcass quality of heavy broilers through epigenetic adaptation. It was based on the following questions: 1. Can TM during embryogenesis of broilers induce a longer-lasting thermoregulatory memory (up to marketing age of 10 wk) that will improve acquisition of thermotolerance as well as increased breast meat yield in heavy broilers? 2. The improved sensible heat loss (SHL) suggests an improved peripheral vasodilation process. Does elevated temperature during incubation affect vasculogenesis and angiogenesis processes in the chick embryo? Will such create subsequent advantages for heavy broilers coping with adverse hot conditions? 3. What are the changes that occur in the PO/AH that induce the changes in the threshold response for heat production/heat loss based on the concept of epigenetic temperature adaptation? The original objectives of this study were as follow: a. to assess the improvement of thermotolerance efficiency and carcass quality of heavy broilers (~4 kg); b. toimproveperipheral vascularization and angiogenesis that improve sensible heat loss (SHL); c. to study the changes in the PO/AH thermoregulatory response for heat production/losscaused by modulating incubation temperature. To reach the goals: a. the effect of TM on performance and thermotolerance of broilers reared to 10 wk of age was studied. b. the effect of preincubation heating with an elevated temperature during the 1ˢᵗ 3 to 5 d of incubation in the presence of modified fresh air flow coupled with changes in turning frequency was elucidated; c.the effect of elevated temperature on vasculogenesis and angiogenesis was determined using in ovo and whole embryo chick culture as well as HIF-1α VEGF-α2 VEGF-R, FGF-2, and Gelatinase A (MMP2) gene expression. The effects on peripheral blood system of post-hatch chicks was determined with an infrared thermal imaging technique; c. the expression of BDNF was determined during the development of the thermal control set-point in the preoptic anterior hypothalamus (PO/AH). The mechanism for this adaptation was based on the assumption that environmental factors, especially ambient temperature, have a strong influence on the determination of the “set-point” for physiological control systems during “critical developmental phases.” Recently, Piestunet al. (2008) demonstrated for the first time that TM (an elevated incubation temperature of 39.5°C for 12 h/d from E7 to E16) during the development/maturation of the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-thyroid axis (thermoregulation) and the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-adrenal axis (stress) significantly improved the thermotolerance and performance of broilers at 35 d of age. These phenomena raised two questions that were addressed in this project: 1. was it possible to detect changes leading to the determination of the “set point”; 2. Did TM have a similar long lasting effect (up to 70 d of age)? 3. Did other TM combinations (pre-heating and heating during the 1ˢᵗ 3 to 5 d of incubation) coupled with changes in turning frequency have any performance effect? The improved thermotolerance resulted mainly from an efficient capacity to reduce heat production and the level of stress that coincided with an increase in SHL (Piestunet al., 2008; 2009). The increase in SHL (Piestunet al., 2009) suggested an additional positive effect of TM on vasculogenesis and angiogensis. 4. In order to sustain or even improve broiler performance, TM during the period of the chorioallantoic membrane development was thought to increase vasculogenesis and angiogenesis providing better vasodilatation and by that SHL post-hatch.

This paper studies the link between severe weather shocks in Colombia and municipality-level incidence of dengue and malaria. The unexpectedly high variability of the 2010 rainfalls relative to previous periods and their regional heterogeneity are exploited as an identification strategy. A differences-indifferences DD) strategy is thereby implemented where the period 2007-2009 is defined as the pre-treatment period and 2010-2011 as the post-treatment period. The treatment group is all municipalities that experienced higher intra-year rain variability in 2010 than in 2007-2009. The results from the different specifications confirm that the relationship between climate events and vector-borne diseases is intricate. The 2010 weather shocks are associated with not only an increase in the number of dengue cases, in the case of high variability (but not extreme) yearly rain, but also a decrease in its incidence, in particular in the presence of extreme rain events. Floods seem to have decreased the number of dengue cases.

The predictive power of short-term forecasting models was impaired by the increased volatility observed in most economic indicators following the outbreak of COVID-19. This paper sets out a revision of the Spain-STING model (one of the tools used by the Banco de España for short-term forecasts of quarter-on-quarter GDP growth) with a view to improving its predictive power in the wake of the pandemic. In particular, the revision entails three main changes: (i) the correlation between the indicators included in the model and the estimated common component is now coincident for all of the indicators, rather than leading in the case of some of them; (ii) by using a stochastic process to model the variance in the estimated common component, such variance may now vary over time; (iii) the set of indicators has been revised in order to include only those that provide the most relevant information when it comes to predicting post-pandemic GDP growth. These modifications yield a substantial improvement in the predictive power of Spain-STING in the post-pandemic period, and maintain such predictive power for the pre-pandemic period.

The influences of parameters such as electrical field strength, voltage ramping rate, current limit, external pressure, pre-heating, and holding time on the onset of the flash event were investigated. Some post-flash sintered samples were subjected to the same condition to observe if the material would experience repeated flash. In addition, material properties such as density and hardness were measured and correlated with SEM and XRD. Implications of the observations on underlying flash sintering mechanism will also be discussed.

The specific objectives of this research were the study of the physical and nutritional properties of the In Ovo Feeding (IOF) solution (i.e. theosmostic properties and the carbohydrate: protein ratio composition). Then, using the optimal solution for determining its effect on hatchability, early nutritional status and intestinal development of broilers and turkey during the last quarter of incubation through to 7 days post-hatch (i.e. pre-post hatch period) by using molecular, biochemical and histological tools. The objective for the last research phase was the determination of the effect of in ovo feeding on growth performance and economically valuable production traits of broiler and turkey flocks reared under practical commercial conditions. The few days before- and- after hatch is a critical period for the development and survival of commercial broilers and turkeys. During this period chicks make the metabolic and physiological transition from egg nutriture (i.e. yolk) to exogenous feed. Late-term embryos and hatchlings may suffer a low glycogen status, especially when oxygen availability to the embryo is limited by low egg conductance or poor incubator ventilation. Much of the glycogen reserve in the late-term chicken embryo is utilized for hatching. Subsequently, the chick must rebuild that glycogen reserve by gluconeogenesis from body protein (mostly from the breast muscle) to support post-hatch thermoregulation and survival until the chicks are able to consume and utilize dietary nutrients. Immediately post-hatch, the chick draws from its limited body reserves and undergoes rapid physical and functional development of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) in order to digest feed and assimilate nutrients. Because the intestine is the nutrient primary supply organ, the sooner it achieves this functional capacity, the sooner the young bird can utilize dietary nutrients and efficiently grow at its genetic potential and resist infectious and metabolic disease. Feeding the embryo when they consume the amniotic fluid (IOF idea and method) showed accelerated enteric development and elevated capacity to digest nutrients. By injecting a feeding solution into the embryonic amnion, the embryo naturally consume supplemental nutrients orally before hatching. This stimulates intestinal development to start earlier as was exhibited by elevated gene expression of several functional genes (brush border enzymes an transporters , elvated surface area, elevated mucin production . Moreover, supplying supplemental nutrients at a critical developmental stage by this in ovo feeding technology improves the hatchling’s nutritional status. In comparison to controls, administration of 1 ml of in ovo feeding solution, containing dextrin, maltose, sucrose and amino acids, into the amnion of the broiler embryo increased dramatically total liver glycogen in broilers and in turkeys in the pre-hatch period. In addition, an elevated relative breast muscle size (% of broiler BW) was observed in IOF chicks to be 6.5% greater at hatch and 7 days post-hatch in comparison to controls. Experiment have shown that IOF broilers and turkeys increased hatchling weights by 3% to 7% (P<0.05) over non injected controls. These responses depend upon the strain, the breeder hen age and in ovo feed composition. The weight advantage observed during the first week after hatch was found to be sustained at least through 35 days of age. Currently, research is done in order to adopt the knowledge for commercial practice.

The COVID-19 crisis generated a sudden need for businesses to start operating remotely, and for employees to work from home. In consequence, the use of telework increased rapidly in Latin America and the Caribbean as it did globally. However, differences on the severity of containment measures by country, access to internet, and particularities of each country's labor markets may have played a role in the divergence of trends across countries in the post-pandemic scenario. We use data from LinkedIn in 7 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, between January 2020 and April 2022, to shed some light on how telework evolved in a selection of countries in the region during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This note summarizes four findings associated with telework adoption and on the divergences in telework behavior across countries in the post-pandemic period. First, countries with more strict government containment measures experienced higher telework rates along 2020; second, telework adoption seems unrelated with countries' internet network coverage and internet network performance; third, telework adoption reflects the dynamics of the labor demand and was driven mostly by the professional services economic sector; and finally, it seems evident that telework will not return to its pre-pandemic levels and it is here to stay.
