Abstract There are not many European countries with such a significant share of the capital city on tourism (especially incoming tourism) as the Czech Republic. The number of foreign tourists grows significantly in the Czech Republic and so does the share of Prague. All marketing campaigns aiming to get foreign tourists beyond Prague ended inefficiently. The share of Prague on the number of tourists accommodated in standard accommodation facilities per the total number of tourists in the Czech Republic is 62%. Prague is also the only region with a higher number of foreign tourists in comparison with the number of the Czech tourists (85% of tourists in Prague are foreigners). Furthermore, the offer of sharing economy in the field of accommodation in Prague also exceeds the offer of other Czech cities. Prague is therefore struggling with overtourism in some attractive areas and must deal with unsustainable development.

The essay presents a synthesizing glimpse into the relatively long tradition of Polish associational life in Prague (on the example of the Polish Club), which was violently interrupted during the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (1940) and restored after the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia (1991). Today’s Polish Club in Prague directly succeeds an organisation of the same name that originated under the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy (1887). It is widely regarded as the representative and speaker of all Poles permanently living in the capitol in the Czech Republic or in its immediate vicinity. It plays this role towards the state and local authorities (in particular the City of Prague Magistrate) as well as the Polish representative office in the Czech Republic, i.e. the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Prague (including its Consular Department). The activities and attitudes of the Polish Club in Prague have thus never been without significance in terms of the development of Czech-Polish relations – in particular with regard to the cultural ocial contacts, mutual recognition of both neighbouring nations or overcoming the negative heterostereotypes.

The post-communist transition to market economy in Central Europe over the last decade of the twentieth century had a significant impact on the demographic profile of the former Soviet bloc countries. Largely due to government policy and market conditions related to housing, this observation is particularly true for the Czech Republic. The present study shows housing as a facet of regional demographic differences within the Czech Republic. The household composition matrix is applied here as a demographic gauge to the behavioral response of households to Czech housing markets and policy. The matrix provides here a glance at households’ demographic behavior in the capital city of Prague and in the country’s other regions, during the early transition period, based on observations from the 1991 census. A summary feature of household composition is the age-specific household size shown for the various regions of the Czech Republic to trace the reduced standard Gamma function. Anomalies detected in the trajectory of age-specific household size for Prague confirm the unique housing market conditions in the capital city, and point to a commensurate demographic response in Prague as opposed to the rest of the country.

In 2019, the Czech Republic celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, which put an end to the 41-year socialist period in Czech history. This event, the liberation of Prague by the Red Army in 1945, and especially the suppression of the Prague Spring in 1968 largely determine the attitude of modern Czechs toward the USSR and Russia. Opinion to the deployment of Warsaw Pact troops in 1968 is clearly negative; the other two dates are causing heated debate. For instance, not only the fate of the monument to Marshal Konev and the intention to perpetuate the memory of the Vlasov army in one of Prague’s districts have provoked a severe reaction in Russia, this issue has also caused a debate in Czech society. The ambiguous past still remains part of current politics in the Czech Republic.

The paper presents three new findings of handicapped individuals of Pipistrellus kuhlii from the territory of the capital city of Prague in the years 2022 and 2023. All three individuals were admitted to the Wildlife Rescue Center in Prague. One find comes from the hibernation period, two finds come from the end of the summer period and the early period of autumn migrations. Two finds come from built-up areas, one find is from the outskirts of Prague. The probability of the existence of a maternity colony in central Bohemia is discussed.

Review of collections in Prague and at Harvard University, supplemented by additional field observations, has allowed taxonomic updating and revision of Barrandian trinucleid trilobites. Genera identified are Bergamia, Declivolithus, Nankinolithus, Tretaspis, Marrolithus, Deanaspis, and Onnia. One earlier described species is assigned to the new genus Marekolithus.Although partly isolated from the rest of north Gondwana during the Ordovician, the Prague Basin shares faunas with Sardinia and Morocco, as all show the transition from Deanaspis to Onnia. Spain, Britain, and the Baltic also share some species with Bohemia, particularly in the high Caradoc and Ashgill (Bohdalec and Králův Dvůr Formations).

The Communist past is perceived negatively by modern Czechs and since Russia is the successor of the Soviet Union, a negative image can effect the coverage of Russian-Czech relations and the image of modern Russia in the Czech media. The study applied qualitative and quantitative content analysis to study the coverage of Russian-Czech relations by the leading television channels of the Czech Republic Česká televize 1 and Prima. The findings of the analysis of 1,195 video news illustrate that Russia plays a significant role on the international agenda of Česká televize 1 and Prima. The main feature of the coverage is a focus on the political and historical element of the Russian-Czech relations. 49 % of video news about Russian-Czech relations by Česká televize 1 were dedicated to politics, 28 % were about history, 8 % to sports and culture. A recurring theme in analyzed news about Russian-Czech relations is freedom’s theme. Česká televize 1 and Prima primarily focus on coverage of events inside the Czech Republic (at least 60 % of the analyzed news stories). Czech TV channels have a tendency to create heroic images of people criticizing authorities of the Russian Federation (B. Nemtsov, A. Politkovskaya after whom the Czechs named two city facilities in Prague). Another feature is the indirect creation of Russia’s image as a large militarized country, which played the role of an oppressor for the Czechs in the recent past.

In March 2017, the Czech parliament passed a resolution obliging the government to launch a high-speed line program. Government resolution on launching the program was adopted in May 2017. The High Speed Railway Development Program in Czech Republic is intended to target international connections in several axes: Dresden-Prague-Brno-Vienna/Bratislava/Budapest, Katowice-Ostrava-Brno- Vienna/Bratislava/Budapest, Wroclaw-Prague-Munich. This network is supposed to improve Prague's accessibility to other cities in Czech Republic but also to major agglomerations of neighbouring states. This project is not only railway project but also a project of national development. One-day trip will include, among others, Dresden, Berlin, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Warsaw together with other big cities in Poland. Since 2010 in Polish - Czech cooperation are being prepared studies on lines Wrocław - Praga and Katowice - Ostrava. The high-speed railway program implementation in Czech Republic and in Poland and Baltic Countries will result in an effective connection between Prague and Baltic Countries capitals. Creation of an international fast railway network in Central Europe is a part of the EU's transport policy framework for TEN-T network development and will contribute to the progress of economic links in the region. In addition, it is going to be involved in the European Union social and economic cohesion improvement.

The paper concludes the research results performed on the Faculty of Economics and Management, Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, concerning the utilization and validation of external and internal software quality measures (metrics). The aim of this research was the validation of measures (metrics) recommended in the ISO/IEC 9126-2 and 9126-3 technical reports, with the intention to incorporate selected measures to international standards. The research presents the serious deficiencies and users provisions concerning these measures and the necessity of a deep revision of the set of measures before the decision about incorporating these measures into the ISO/IEC 250xx standards series, developed within the SQuaRE international research project. The main part of this contribution was presented at the conference Agricultural Perspectives XV, organised by the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, September 20 to 21, 2006.

The paper deals with statistical analysis of the registered regional unemployment rate in regions and districts of the Czech Republic from 1998 to 2002. Regional unemployment reaches significantly different levels; moreover, within the examined period, differences were increasing: variance between the minimum and the maximum increased approx. from 12% to 20% in the respective districts. By means of cluster analysis, regions are divided into more homogenous groups according to the registered unemployment rate by 31 December 2002. The following districts may be identified as the best ones: Praha-západ (Prague-West), Praha-východ (Prague-East), Praha (Prague) and Benešov; the following as the worst ones: Most and Karviná. Concerning regions, the lowest unemployment level may be identified in Praha (Prague); on the contrary, the highest levels were reached in Ústecký region and Moravskoslezský region. Variability, skewness and peak characteristics were calculated to evaluate the development of regional unemployment distribution. The average rose from 5.63% to 9.94%, the standard deviation rose from 2.53% to 4.15%, the variation coefficient stayed around 0.4. Thus, together with the increase in unemployment level, the absolute variability rose while the relative variability stayed approx. constant. The rate distribution was left-sided and increasing; the peak was only slightly higher than the standard peak. The development trend of the characteristics was evaluated by means of linear functions and higher order polynomials; their seasonal variation is described by seasonal indices differing in the degree of their seasonality and distribution in the course of a year. A correlation matrix demonstrates the relations between the trend of the characteristics and their seasonal indices.

We document the first occurrence of the Kentish Snail Monacha cantiana (Montagu, 1803) from Prague, Czech Republic. During autumn 2009, an abundant population of M. cantiana was found at sites with suitable vegetation and microclimatic conditions, predominantly composed of grassy vegetation cover. It is expected that this species will continue to spread in the Czech Republic.

This paper completes the knowledge of an occurrence of Bythinella austriaca (Frauenfeld, 1857) (Gastropoda: Hydrobiidae) in surroundings of Prague – capital of the Czech Republic. However, this species is not rare in the eastern part of the Czech Republic, sites on north-western otskirts of Prague are isolated far from the main distribution area. Altogether, 63 sites potentially suitable for B. austriaca were investigated in this area, and occurrence of this species was confirmed in 11 of them. B. austriaca was found in springs, rivulets and small brooks, more numerous populations were found in springs. Historical occurrence data in this area were compared with results of research done in 2003, 2006 and 2010. Actual situation of this species in Prague surroundings is problematic and survival of some populations is not guaranteed.

Tourism is a significant contributor to the social and economic growth of countries and regions. As such, developing tourism is a crucial element in enhancing a country's economic efficiency. In Europe, the Czech Republic stands as one of the most alluring and well-established countries. Thanks to its abundant natural, recreational, historical, and cultural resources, it has fostered a fiercely competitive tourism industry. The commonness of historical, natural, social, and economic developmental conditions between Czechia and Ukraine establishes similar prerequisites for tourism development. An analysis of Czech tourism development, including identification of the country's tourism traits and trends, enables the adoption of Czech tourism organization experience and practical application in Ukraine. The present article examines the current state of tourism development in Czechia. The analyses the development of the tourist infrastructure in the country. It examines the dynamics of the collective means of tourist accommodation in the Czech Republic. The analysis focuses on the dynamics of tourist arrivals to the Czech Republic, characterizing the structure of tourist flows. The geospatial features of tourist flows are considered, and the dynamics of the volume of income from foreign tourism are analysed. Tourism plays a significant role in the economics of the Czech Republic. The contribution of tourism to the country's GDP remains below its pre-COVID-19 levels. However, in 2022, the tourism industry of the country started to recuperate from the pandemic. As compared to 2021, the number of tourists escalated by 8 million in 2022. Majority of the tourists arrived in the Czech Republic for recreational and cultural purposes, as well as to meet their relatives and for business agendas. The Czech Republic received the majority of its foreign tourists from Germany, Slovakia, and Poland. The domestic tourist share in the country's overall tourist flow is 62,3 %, while the foreign tourist share is 37,7 %. The country is currently investing significantly in transport infrastructure by modernizing its railway network and expanding the capacity of its airports. The provision and standard of accommodation play a vital role in the appeal of tourist destinations, and the Czech Republic has seen a consistent rise in the quantity of lodging options. An appreciable increase in the number of shared lodging facilities was observed in the Czech Republic over the period of 2020–2022. South Bohemian, Hradec Královе and South Moravian regions boast the highest number of accommodation facilities, while Pardubice and Vysočina regions have the lowest. The city of Prague, along with South Bohemian and South Moravian regions, is home to the largest number of rooms in collective accommodation facilities. The Czech Republic boasts a thriving restaurant industry that has seen a steady increase in the number of establishments. The country's tourism is characterized by uneven geographic distribution. Notably, the largest number of tourist arrivals are recorded in Prague, South Moravian, Hradec Královе, and South Bohemian regions. According to the analysis, the regions adjacent to Prague also exhibited a significant appeal to tourists. This trend might be clarified by tourists who visit Prague tend to extend their routes to neighbouring regions, particularly in Central Bohemian, Liberec, and Hradec Královе regions. Conversely, regions situated far from the capital draw a substantial number of visitors. This could suggest the existence of exceptional tourism services that entice travellers. The Czech Republic has high tourism densities, with Prague having the highest observed density due to the influx of tourists into a relatively small area. Karlovy Vary, Liberec, and Hradec Královе regions also have high tourism densities. In 2022, foreign tourism generated revenues of 1 billion USD for the country. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, foreign tourism revenues decreased by 62,5 % in 2020. The Czech Republic is known for its conventional health and wellness, cultural and educational tourism. Fossilized opercula are uncommon in Paleozoic rocks, and shells with the operculum in place are rare. A single specimen with the operculum in place was discovered by P. Slehofer in a concretion in the Ordovician Zahorany Formation of the Prague Basin. Formerly known as Trochonema excavatum Barrande in Perner, 1903, the species is the basis of the new genus Slehoferia. Perner (1903) reported the shell of the same species from two localities, and additional specimens without the operculum are in the collections of the National Museum and Czech Geological Survey. Studied material is deposited in the paleontological collection of the Czech Geological Survey, Prague.

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) represents an ultrasensitive analytical method for measurement of long-lived radionuclides, namely 14C, 10Be, 26Al, 41Ca, 129I, and 236U. It provides information about isotopic ratios up to 10–16 in samples of mass from several miligrams to tens of micrograms. The first AMS laboratory in the Czech Republic was built in Nuclear Physics Institute, Řež, in collaboration with Archaeological Institute, Prague (both Czech Academy of Sciences) and Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague, and equipped with AMS MIELA (Ionplus AG, Switzerland). ABSTRACTA revision of the Lower Devonian dalmanitid trilobites of the Prague Basin (Czech Republic) is presented. The subfamily Odontochilinae Šnajdr is considered a synonym of Dalmanitidae Vogdes. Twenty-one previously and five newly described (three in open nomenclature) species and subspecies occur in the Prague Basin from the lowermost Pragian (one problematic specimen possibly comes from the uppermost Lochkovian) to the Lower Emsian; the last questionable record is from the Upper Emsian. The species have been assigned to four genera and subgenera: Odontochile Hawle & Corda, Reussiana Šnajdr, Zlichovaspis (Zlichovaspis) Přibyl & Vaněk and Zlichovaspis (Devonodontochile) Šnajdr. These trilobites are considered as scavengers or opportunistic predators, living most of their lives as vagrant benthos burying in the muddy substrate to find organic remains. The first undoubted adult-like meraspid specimens are described.

In the spring of 2004, I was invited to Prague to direct Vaclav Havel's Temptation at the National Theatre in the Czech Republic. I had directed in a number of European cities but there was something of a frisson about going to Prague and working with the ex-president of the Czech Republic, whom I remembered most vividly as the Great Dissenter against Soviet rule in a city I had often visualized but never actually seen.On the day Vaclav Havel was scheduled to attend the first-act run-through of his play there was a palpable sense of hysteria in the air. The actors, all highly experienced members of a robust and respected permanent company that performed regularly before the upper echelons of Prague society, had never played in a scrappy rehearsal room for an internationally lauded political icon and ex-president of the Czech Republic surrounded by secret service men. Lines were muffed, moves went awry, cues forgotten, and a sense of a ‘Royal Command Performance’ hung in the air. After an hour or so, the torture was over and the actors sat circled around an appreciative, avuncular, and soft-spoken playwright, being gently massaged with compliments and diverted by anecdotes about his numerous incarcerations, the play's inception, and the thrill of being back in the midst of working actors after an absence of some twenty-five years.

Floods are natural events with extensive impact on property and life of affected people. They significantly came in 1997 into the life of Czech society and since then has caused damage almost 172 billion CZK. The paper focuses on the assessment of impact of floods from 1997 to 2010 on economic level of each region. The impact is assessed on basis of development of the basic macroeconomic indicators such as GDP and economic level of regions, change in fixed capital formation, sales of industrial products and unemployment. The basic idea is to show how much floods have influenced region’s economy and if it depends more on the amount of flood damages or nature of damage (structure within infrastructure). 13 regions of the Czech Republic except Prague were chosen for the analysis. Prague was excluded from the analysis because of its specific status (capital city and the region) and economic conditions among regions in the Czech Republic (higher GDP per capita than the national average).

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss the current state of provision for homeless people in Prague. Design/methodology/approach – This is primarily a narrative account, though supported by and referenced with contemporary Czech social policy scholarship. It first traces the roots of the current situation through the history of the Czech legal framework for citizenship; the effects of communist-era ideology, when homelessness was simply hidden; and the post-communist (new-era) economic and political climate. The range of existing services is then described and analysed with respect to the difficulties in the demands posed for people in this situation. Findings – The paper outlines the current approach with outreach (“terrain”), engagement (“threshold”) and “accommodation” (support and rehab) services; and the challenges in transition from one to the next. Many systemic barriers remain for the re-integration of homeless people, stemming from attitudes within the community and amongst professionals, as much as a sheer lack of resources, or the psychological and emotional difficulties of the homeless themselves. Originality/value – There are few papers published internationally on homelessness in the new EU states. The similarity in the structure of services to what are sometimes called “staircase models” may therefore be instructive.

This paper deals with the contribution of Dušan Karpatský (1935—2017) to the reception of Croatian literature in the Czech Republic, and Czech literature in Croatia since the 1960s until the present day. In his numerous translations, Karpatský worked tirelessly to introduce Czech readers to the achievements of Croatian (and Yugoslav) literature, and vice versa. By selecting texts for his translations that were as current as possible, and by meeting high aesthetic criteria, made him influential in both cultural milieus where he played the role of an intermediary. His work in lexicography, bibliography, history of literature and non-fiction is also of great importance. His research has made Croatian culture permanently indebted to him because he discovered and translated into Croatian the Prague Papers, written in Czech by the Croatian politician Stjepan Radić, and because he discovered a seven-language dictionary written by the Prague Benedictine monk Peter Loderecker, which was based on a five-language dictionary written by Faust Vrančić. Owing to all of the above, and much more, Karpatský is considered a key figure in literary and cultural communication between Croatia and the Czech Republic in the last six decades.

Molecular surveillance studies have documented the extensive spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clones. Studies carried out by Centro de Epidemiologia Molecular-Network for Tracking Gram-Positive Pathogenic Bacteria (CEM/NET) led to the identification of two international multidrug-resistant strains, which were designated as the Iberian and Brazilian MRSA clones and which were defined by multiple genomic typing methods; these included ClaI restriction digests hybridized with mecA- and Tn554-specific DNA probes and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The genotypic characteristics of these clones are distinct: the Iberian clone is defined asmecA type I, Tn554 type E (or its variants), and PFGE pattern A (I:E:A), whereas the Brazilian clone is defined asmecA type XI (or its variants), Tn554 type B, and PFGE pattern B (XI:B:B). In this study, we characterized 59 single-patient isolates of MRSA collected during 1996 and 1997 at seven hospitals located in Prague and five other cities in the Czech Republic by using the methodologies mentioned above and by using ribotyping ofEcoRI and HindIII digests hybridized with a 16S-23S DNA probe. The Brazilian MRSA clone (XI:B:B) was the major clone (80%) spread in two hospitals located in Prague and one located in Brno; the Iberian MRSA clone (I:E:A or its variant I:DD:A), although less representative (12%), was detected in two hospitals, one in Prague and the other in Plzen. Almost all the strains belonging to clone XI:B:B (45 of 47) corresponded to a unique ribotype, E1H1, whereas most strains of the I:E:A and I:DD:A clonal types (6 of 7) corresponded to ribotype E2H2.

This paper is devoted to the issue of Digital Humanities (DH) in Czech literary studies. Over the last decade, various methods primarily connected with DH have had a substantial impact on the development of numerous areas of the humanities. In Czech literary studies, this impact is visible only from 2017 onwards, when official discussion between Czech scholars about the topic was initiated. The recent development of this tradition is the main reason why DH have not gained as strong position in Czech literary studies as they have abroad. However, there exists a tradition of the use of so-called exact methods in literary studies in the Czech scholarly milieu, and this tradition serves as an important domestic source for the full development of DH in Czech literary studies. While these exact methods are examined in the paper, its main purpose is to introduce two contemporary Czech DH projects in literary studies – the first being the Corpus of Czech Verse and the second the Corpus of Czech Prose, the latter of which currently serves as a base for a subject-project on Prague Fictional Topography. These two projects can be viewed as representatives of the situation and role of DH in contemporary Czech literary studies.
