AbstractArchaeological research can draw on material remains to understand the ways that individuals may have expressed their identities in pursuit of specific goals. Here ritual performances in ancient Mesoamerica are considered for their role in shaping identities deployed to gain social and political power. The Late to Terminal Classic period (a.d. 650–960) site of Las Canoas, Honduras, is offered as a case study. In particular, the monumental Main Plaza Group at Las Canoas is examined as a spatial setting for the performance of rituals involving the use of incense burners and ceramic anthropomorphic figurines. These performances are argued to have facilitated the efforts of certain members of the community to take advantage of shifting political and economic alliances in the region and make a bid for power. Ultimately, however, their efforts to establish spiritual and political leadership did not endure.

THE PURPOSE. Broadband passive filters (BBF) are an effective measure to mitigate harmonic resonance in power systems with nonlinear harmonic producing loads. The disadvantage of simple second-order broadband filters are pure selectivity and excessive fundamental frequency losses. This is especially evident in devices designed for low-order harmonics mitigation. This paper presents new broadband filter configurations with superior performances and low fundamental frequency losses.METHODS. A general method of broadband passive filter design is considered. The filter has the form of single-loaded ladder LC-two-port. Conditions of minimal fundamental frequency loss of the filer are determined.RESULTS. This paper presents new broadband filter configurations with superior damping performances and low fundamental frequency losses. Different broadband filter configurations are compared. The results show that 3-5 order broadband ladder filters have better filtering performance and lower power loss than traditional C-type filters.CONCLUSION. The proposed broadband filters can be used for industrial power systems with powerful nonlinear loads. This will normalize the power quality and at the same time improve the energy efficiency of compensating devices.

In this special issue, we build on Bauman's seminal observation about performance, that ‘the act of expression is put on display, objectified, marked out to a degree from its discursive surrounding and opened up to interpretive scrutiny and evaluation by an audience’ (2000:1). More recently, scholars have moved to examining the performative role of heteroglossia, that is, the use of multiply sourced, semiotic (verbal and nonverbal) forms. In particular, this line of research has shown how attention to heteroglossic performances and their local interpretations can illuminate the subtle politics of dominant and nondominant identities in different ethnographic contexts. This is particularly true of what Coupland (2007) calls ‘high performances’, which, as Bell & Gibson (2011:558) write, are privileged sites for allowing participants to indexically associate expressive forms with social personae. Thus, while all performances are inherently reflexive, heteroglossic performances particularly amplify that reflexivity with respect to their multiple frames, voices, and stances that they presuppose and establish.

For most joint direction of arrival (DOA) and polarization estimation methods, the performances of proposed methods in dealing with unequal power sources are not discussed. However, sources with unequal powers apparently exist widely in actual applications. In this study, we propose a joint DOA and polarization estimation method for unequal power sources by utilizing the invariance property of noise subspace (IPNS) to the power of sources. This work extends the IPNS method to the dual polarized antenna array for joint DOA and polarization estimation. Moreover, we theoretically prove that the IPNS remains valid even when the sources are correlated. The computer simulations illustrate that the proposed method can effectively estimate the DOA and polarization parameters as the power difference between sources increases, as opposed to the polarimetric multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm, which suffers from degradation in resolution probability. In addition, the performances of the proposed method are provided, as well the Cramer Rao Bound (CRB), which show approximate performance as the polarimetric MUSIC algorithm.

Abstract Contemporary Pakistani artist Bani Abidi explores the overlapping and multifaceted relationship between performance, nationalism, and machinations of power. This article focuses on a subset of her work that considers how masculinity relates to these ideas. Specifically, in the works discussed in this article, she interrogates the ways masculinity is produced and maintained, ultimately revealing the hollowness of such performances. Abidi’s own diasporic perspective centres South Asian culture and identities throughout her practice. She draws our attention to universal conditions that govern the world, but does so within a specifically South Asian context. Her work points to the fictive and limiting nature of gender roles, revealing how these performances of political masculinity are legacies of the colonial encounter. By examining how the performance of masculinity operates as a mechanism of power within Abidi’s work, this article uncovers how her work addresses displays of nationalism in Pakistan and India, particularly as it relates to the region’s post colonial history.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of laser power on the electrochemical corrosion performance in 3.5% NaCl, 0.1 M H2SO4 and 0.1 M NaOH solutions, which provided an experimental basis for the application of Al–Ti–Ni amorphous coating in marine environment. Design/methodology/approach Amorphous Al–Ti–Ni coatings were fabricated on S355 structural steel by laser thermal spraying (LTS) at different laser powers. The surface and cross-section morphologies, chemical element distribution, phases and crystallization behaviors of obtained coatings were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscope, X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. The effects of laser power on the electrochemical corrosion performances of Al–Ti–Ni coatings in 3.5% NaCl, 0.1 M H2SO4 and 0.1 M NaOH solutions were investigated using an electrochemical workstation. Findings The crystallization temperature of Al–Ti–Ni coatings fabricated at the laser power of 1,300 and 1,700 W is ∼520°C, whereas that fabricated at the laser power of 1,500 W is ∼310°C. The coatings display excellent corrosion resistance in 3.5% NaCl and 0.1 M NaOH solutions, while a faster dissolution rate in 0.1 M H2SO4 solution. The coatings fabricated at the laser power of 1,300 and 1,700 W present the better electrochemical corrosion resistance in 3.5% NaCl and 0.1 M NaOH solutions, whereas that fabricated at the laser power of 1,500 W exhibits the better electrochemical corrosion resistance in 0.1 M H2SO4 solution. Originality/value In this work, Al-wire-cored Ti–Ni powder was first on S355 steel with the laser power of 1,300, 1,500 and 1,700 W, and the effects of laser power on the electrochemical corrosion performance in 3.5% NaCl, 0.1 M H2SO4 and 0.1 M NaOH solutions were investigated using an electrochemical workstation.

A Deadbeat current controller for an LC-coupling hybrid active power filter is proposed, which can track with the reference compensation current with low steady- state error and fast dynamic response. Moreover, it can lead Hybrid Active power Filter to be operating at a fixed switching frequency with low output current ripples, thus reducing the size of the filtering circuit. The stability issue and parameter design of the proposed deadbeat current controller are analyzed and discussed. Finally, the compensating performance of the deadbeat current controller for the Hybrid Active Power Filter (LC-HAPF) is verified by simulation compared with the conventional hysteresis bandwidth modulation control, the proportional-integral (PI) control, and the proportional multi-resonant control for the LC-HAPF, which shows its effectiveness and superior compensating performances.

This article looks at how empathy and experience, existing within the virtual reality (VR) performance medium, facilitate learning. The article focuses on the importance of soft skills in education and highlights empathy and experience as important contributors to developing skills in understanding and communicating with others. It acknowledges that the development of skills and attributes that benefit education and employment also benefit life satisfaction and well-being. The article contemplates VR as an ‘empathy machine’ and explores how VR performances offer immersive and interactive storytelling experiences. It argues that VR could promote empathy by broadening perspectives through exposure to immersive storytelling, in addition to real-world interactions, helping to advance beneficial soft skills development. If VR could be an effective ‘empathy machine’, then VR performances could offer an even more powerful medium to develop soft skills and empathy. The article draws on three different examples of VR performances to illustrate their education potency and concludes that, with further research, VR performances could be influential tools in education for soft skill development.

This article explores performances of satire as a form of journalism in Zimbabwe by analysing performances by satirists who mimic to mock journalistic conventions and political authorities. Through analyses of YouTube videos, the article explores the ways in which satire as journalism is visualised. Onscreen, satirists mimic the gestures, mannerisms and aesthetic objects connected to both political figures and state journalists on the state-run television station for ridicule. This paper argues that the parodying and mimicking of aesthetics of authority legitimises and professionalises satire as journalism, even as it seeks to critique notions of journalistic authority in an authoritarian state. Through analyses of three Zimbabwean satire shows on YouTube, the paper finds that, while satirists mimic journalistic practices and journalistic authority with the goal of mocking state media and the censorial state, a closer reading of their practices shows that they themselves become legitimate news tellers. This kind of satire plays with familiar broadcasting television aesthetics to signal authority, providing current news and otherwise censored critique.

This overview of swimming biomechanics focuses on three performance factors: (i) generation of propulsion in water; (ii) drag encountered by the body during swimming; and (iii) propulsive efficiency. Theoretical considerations will be put to use by predicting individual power requirements for swimming a world record in the 50 m freestyle based on experimental data.

A wireless ultrasound surgical system (WUSS) with battery modules requires efficient power consumption with appropriate cutting effects during surgical operations. Effective cutting performances of the ultrasound transducer (UT) should be produced for ultrasound surgical knives for effective hemostasis performance and efficient dissection time. Therefore, we implemented a custom-made UT with piezoelectric material and re-poling process, which is applied to enhance the battery power consumption and output amplitude performances of the WUSS. After the re-poling process of the UT, the quality factor increased from 1231.1 to 2418 to minimize the unwanted heat generation. To support this UT, we also developed a custom-made generator with a transformer and developed 2nd harmonic termination circuit, control microcontroller with an advanced reduced instruction set computer machine (ARM) controller, and battery management system modules to produce effective WUSS performances. The generator with a matching circuit in the WUSS showed a peak-to-peak output voltage and current amplitude of 166 V and 1.12 A, respectively, at the resonant frequency. The performance with non-contact optical vibrators was also measured. In the experimental data, the developed WUSS reduced power consumption by 3.6% and increased the amplitude by 20% compared to those of the commercial WUSS. Therefore, the improved WUSS performances could be beneficial for hemostatic performance and dissection time during surgical operation because of the developed UT with a piezoelectric material and re-poling process.

Secular changes in anaerobic fitness test performance in healthy 6- to 17-year-old Australasians were examined by meta-analysis of 232,564 power- and speed-test performances between 1960 and 2002. Overall, power-test performance improved at a rate of +0.05% [95% confidence interval (CI) = +0.01% to +0.09%] per annum, and speed at +0.04% (CI = +0.02% to +0.06%) per annum. Results indicate that anaerobic-fitness-test performances have remained relatively stable in Australasian children and adolescents in recent decades.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between judo specific test performances and physical fitness of prepubescent judo athletes. Forty male judo athletes aged 10-13 voluntarily participated. Athletes completed special judo fitness test (SJFT), hikisdashi uchi-komi test (HUT), judogi grip strength tests, and performance-related physical fitness components tests (aerobic power, strength, agility, explosive power, body composition). Correlation coefficients were used to analyze the relationship between the judo specific tests and physical fitness performances. Significant correlations were found between total throw numbers during SJFT, HUT performance, isometric and dynamic judogi grip strength test performance and general performance-related physical fitness tests. Also, negative correlations were found between judo specific tests performances and body fat percent. It can be concluded from the study that total throws in SJFT, 20 s HUT and dynamic judogi grip strength tests can be used to monitor performances of prepubescent judo athletes as these tests present large significant correlations with performance related physical fitness tests.

Adherents of performance theory emphasise the constitutive and transformative potentia of rituals with respect to patterns of social organization and authority. For them, rituals “not only mean something, but also do something, particularly the way they construct and inscribe power relationships” (Bell 1997). This contribution focuses on the role of ritual in postcolonial identity constitution and the performative authentication of political power and social authority in Taiwan. Since the middle of the 1990s, traditionalist performances have been on the rise on the island. Generously subsidised by government bodies which have sought to demonstrate their nativist or multiculturalist orientations, aboriginal elites not only publicly worshipped ancestor gods and enacted animal sacrifices in so called “revitalised” public rituals, but also used these occasions to point to the primordial power of aborigines vis-à-vis their former colonisers, the Han Chinese. In many cases, however, the “revitalised” rituals described here conflicted with the interests of common people in aboriginal society, who wished public ritual to be compatible with their newly adopted Christian traditions. Taking a closer look at the contemporary rituals of the Taroko and Ami, which are characterised by the above mentioned dynamics, I argue that rituals publicly performed by aborigines today amalgamate different levels of meaning. While they articulate and negotiate the identity needs and social exigency of the respective social group or society (Turner 1969), they simultaneously carry those often elite-dominated mechanisms that are described by Hobsbawm and Ranger (1983) in their examinations of the processes of cultural invention for the needs of political and cultural entities, as well as by Paul Brass (1991) in his analyses of elite competition. In other words, while these rituals may in many cases have efficacy with regard to the constitution of society and identity, the traditionalist rituals in particular frequently serve the authentication exigencies of various elites. Finally, I suggest that if one wants to provide the culture of common people with greater opportunities for representation, one should not focus too much on the display of “authentic” old traditions in order to highlight Taiwanese subjectivity, but should also acknowledge those hybridised new traditions which aboriginal society has generated over the course of Taiwan’s more recent history and which may also contain new religious elements.

Major professional sports teams are nowadays complex businesses, intrinsically concerned with matters of economics and finance. Performances of each teams and each franchises vary greatly. This paper makes comparative performance analyses for four profession franchises in North America. Four financial measures are chosen to represent team performances: attendance, revenue, payroll, and profit. First, the box-plot was utilized to measure the spread of the power (wealth) of each league with respect to each measures. Second, the rank-power distribution was used to visualize the team’s relative standings in each measures and in each franchises. Most team performances were observed to follow the Pareto principle: few teams scored very high (significant few); large numbers of teams scored very low (trivial many). These qualitative findings can be a useful guide for franchise owners and commissioners for the future strategic planning.

To optimize the power and economic performance of battery electric passenger vehicles, an 8.5-m-long battery electric passenger vehicle was selected as the research subject. The simulated-annealing particle-swarm-optimization (SAPSO) algorithm was applied to optimize the two-speed gearbox and transmission ratio of the vehicle. With the opening of the accelerator pedal and speed as variables, a comprehensive gear shift schedule that considered both the power and economic performance was established. The comprehensive gear shift schedule curve was defined in the model built in the ADVISOR software. The transmission ratio was jointly optimized using the ADVISOR and ISIGHT software, and then the ADVISOR simulation software was used to analyze the economic and dynamic performances corresponding to the optimized transmission ratio. Finally, we compared the power and economic performances of the vehicle before and after transmission ratio optimization, the results of which showed that after the optimization, the maximum speed, climbing gradient, and 0–50 km/h acceleration time of the vehicle were greatly improved, and the driving range was slightly shortened. This enabled performance advantages of the battery electric passenger vehicle by balancing the power and economic performances of the vehicle.

Despite the disciplinary power of surveillance, I argue artistic performances may also provide a space of resistance and self-fashioning. Discussions on artistic performance emphasize the ambivalence and uncertainty of art to resist existing power structures and create alternative meaning. However, how concretely, and when, do artistic performances challenge these structures often remains uncertain. Their popularity does not guarantee the depth of their engagement with surveillance practices, and apparent resistance may hide unconscious cooptation and blatant reproduction of existing inequalities and power structures. To understand the political effect of artistic performances, I argue one needs to look at how they participate to the redefinition of individual and collective selves. This must include attention to spectatorship as a different category from state and corporate surveillance. Spectators engage with performers, reinforce or deny their claim to self-fashioning. By looking at spectators one can better understand how a performance can be (or fail to be) self-fashioning not only for the performer but also collectively for the spectators.

The NiCrAlY coatings were deposited on 38CrMoAl substrate by a laser hybrid plasma spraying (LHPS) technology in this study. The coatings’ microstructures and anti-corrosion performances with different laser power were characterized using an optical microscope, a scanning electron microscope, and the Neutral Salt Spray(NSS) test. The test results indicate that the laser power has great effect on the microstructure and performances of the LHPS coatings. And when the laser power is appropriate, it can make the coating has more compact and homogeneous microstructure, exhibit less porosities or micro-cracks, higher bonding strength and more excellent anti-corrosion performance.

The aim of this study is to determine the performances of U-18 football players in the Super Amateur League and compare some of their physical and physiological performances based on their positions. League and compare some selected physical and physiological performance parameters according to the positions they played. A total of 54 male soccer players with an age of 16.83±1.68 years and 7.14±3.16 years of sports experience participated in the study voluntarily. Performance criteria for the football players included Yo-Yo IR1 distance, VO2max, and vVO2max, as well as 10m, 30m, Illinois Agility Test, COD, CMJ, and RAST tests. A one-way ANOVA test was employed to compare the performances of football players according to their playing positions. Significant differences were found in favor of forwards in CMJ, average, and peak anaerobic power results (p0.05). It was observed that peak and average anaerobic power and vertical jump results were significantly better in forwards compared to players in other positions. Strikers demonstrated superior peak and average anaerobic power as well as vertical jump performance compared to players in other positions.

Permanent magnet synchronous machines provide many dramatic electromagnetic performances such as high efficiency and high power density, which make them more competitive in aircraft electrification, whereas, designing a permanent magnet starter–generator (PMSG), with given consideration to fault tolerance (FT), is a significant challenge and requires great effort. In this paper, a comprehensive FT PMSG design process is proposed which is applied to power systems of turboprops. Firstly, potential slot/pole combinations were selected based on winding factor, harmonic losses and manufacture issues. Then, pursuing high power density, a multiple objective optimization process was carried out to comprehensively rank performances. To meet a fault tolerance target, electrical, magnetic and thermal isolation topologies were investigated and compared, among which 18 slot/12 pole with dual three-phase was selected as the optimal one, with a power density of 7.9 kW/kg. Finally, a finite element analysis verified the performance in normal and post-fault scenarios. The candidate machine has merits concerning high power density and post-fault performance.

Abstract Despite the crucial role that performative arts play in enabling progressive transformation, education, healing and psychological protection for abuse on certain female bodies, often the intentions or agenda of such performances habitually outweighs the transformative potentials therein. In the context of this paper, my association with transformation is related to power in a performance that invites participants to reclaim the broken pieces of their lives as a form of agency. Tears in the Mirror, is based on my personal experience narrated in a performance-based project on sexual violence. In my position as the artist directing the play, I took down notes over a period of one-week rehearsal with the actor, representing my experience. The autoethnographic performance method for information sourcing was used with the actor. I used observation and discussion in the process and each stage reflected a continuing process of integrating the ‘doing’ of autoethnography with a critical reflection upon the subject matter. My findings showed that victims of sexual violence are more likely to identify with narratives of other victims during a performance. This is because in viewing the image of the actor on stage one is simultaneously viewing the self in the mirror of the other.

This paper examined the effect of power supply and the performances of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs). In doing this, the paper used durations of public power supply, bills paid for public power and cost paid for private power supply as measures of power supply on the performances index of the SMEs in Port Harcourt. The performance indexes are employed in the models as the dependent variables while the power supply indexes are the explanatory variables. The data were sourced primarily through a well-structured questionnaire and the samples determined by the Cochran sampling techniques. The data were analyzed with the Qualitative Respond Model. It was revealed that a lower duration of public power supply significantly reduces the profitability, productivity and revenue, as well as the storage of products of the SMSEs, examined. Hence, the study recommended among others that there is a need to allocate more electric power to the industrial area of Rivers state- Port Harcourt, especially in the day light to encourage productivity, profitability and employment generation in the state.

The conventional integration of wind power is difficult to adapt the demand of power grid planning and operation. This paper proposes an instantaneous power control strategy for voltage improvement in power networks using wind turbine improving the dynamical response of power systems performances (voltage and transient stability) after fault. In which the proposed control algorithm based on a new advanced control strategy to control the injected wind power into power system. The efficiency of developed control strategy has been tested using IEEE 9 Bus. Simulation results have showed that the proposed method perform better to preserve optimal performances over wide range of disturbances for both considered scenarios studied short circuit and variable loads.

Conventional model predictive control (MPC)-based direct power control of the three-phase full-bridge AC/DC converter usually suffers from the parametric coupling between active and reactive powers. A reference change of either the active or reactive power will influence the other, deteriorating the dynamic-state performance. In addition, the steady-state performance affected by one-step-delay arising from computation and communication processes in the digital implementation should be improved in consideration of switching frequency reduction. In combination with the proposed novel mutual influence elimination constraint, this paper proposes the multi-functional MPC for three-phase full-bridge AC/DC converters to improve both the steady and dynamic performances simultaneously. It has various advantages such as one-step-delay compensation, power ripple reduction, and switching frequency reduction for steady-state performance as well as mutual influence elimination for dynamic capability. The simulation and experimental results are obtained to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The performances of four types of power threshers were tested for determining the grain output rate, threshing efficiency, losses, labor and power requirements of wheat threshing. The grain outputs varied from 43.17 kg/hr to 257.14 kg/hr. The threshing efficiencies were above 92.78% for all the machines. Seed damages ranged from 2.7 to 3.5% of total grain intake. The labor performance was maximum, 64.29 kg/man-hr, for Spiral thresher and minimum, 21.8 kg/hr, for Kyowa thresher. The costs of wheat threshing varied between 0.43 to 1.07 Tk/kg depending on threshers. Among the power threshers, threshing cost was minimum for Spiral thresher, the cost was the lowest, Tk 0.09 per kg, for pedal thresher. The power thresher may be used in big farms but the pedal thresher is better for small scale threshing.

<span>Due to natural randomness, partial shading conditions (PSCs) to photovoltaic (PV) power generation significantly drop the power generation. Metaheuristic based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) can handle PSCs by searching PV panels’ global maximum power point (GMPP). However, trapped at local maxima, sluggishness, continuous power oscillations around GMPP and inaccuracy are the main disadvantages of metaheuristic algorithm. Therefore, the development of algorithm under complex PSCs has been continuously attracting many researchers to yield more satisfying results. In this paper, several algorithms including conventional and metaheuristic are selected for candidate, such as perturb and observe (P&amp;O), firefly (FF), differential evolution (DE), grey wolf optimizer (GWO) and Seagull optimizer (SO). From the preliminary study, SO has shown best performance among other candidates. Then, SO is improved for rapid global optimizer. Modified variable step sizes perturb and observe (MVSPO) is applied to enhance the accuracy tracking of SO. To evaluate the performances, high complexity multipeak partial shading is used to test the algorithms. Statistical results are also provided to analyze the trend of performances. The proposed method performances are shown better fast-tracking time and settling time, high accuracy, higher energy harvesting and low steady-state oscillations than other candidates.</span>

This paper presents an activity concerning the modeling and the control of an innovative power-assisted electric bicycle. The proposed control method is based on a torque control designed via an optimal approach to achieve multi-objective performances regarding the external disturbance input, control signal magnitude, and velocity tracking error. The performance of the methodology has been evaluated applying the proposed control to a new pedelec (pedal electric cycle) model characterized by the measurement of the total torque (rider torque and electric motor one) employed as a feedback for the control. To this aim, a mathematical model of the bicycle, equipped with the electric motor, has been developed. Simulations have been performed in order to evaluate the tracking capability and the disturbance rejection. The performances have been compared with the ones referred to a traditional assistance approach, and the results demonstrate that the proposed approach provides improvements in terms of riding comfort and energy employment.

The driving device of the main steam and feed water isolation valves is one of the most important electromechanical equipment in nuclear power plants, and its motion performances are related to the safety of nuclear power plants. This article proposes an optimization methodology to research the motion performances. In the methodology, inputs are the motion performance indexes and the major influencing parameters with no need for complex mathematical models of the electromechanical equipment; the co-simulation model or the prototype are adopted to illustrate the influence rules of major parameters on the motion performance indexes; objective functions for optimization, which combine motion performances with weight factors, can reveal the influence rule curves. Then based on the methodology, motion performances of the equipment are analyzed and the key indexes are selected. Besides, the maximum pressure of the driving device is chosen as the major parameter and a dimensionless objective function synthesizing the motion performance indexes is proposed. Finally, the influence rule curve where the dimensionless function varies with the maximum pressure is obtained by the co-simulation and the experimental study on the prototype verifies the results, which provides references for the further research and development in the engineering application. For other electromechanical equipment, the method is an efficient tool to design, verify, and optimize the performances.

AbstractSubsea inductive power transfer is one of the reliable and efficient methods for limited electric power transfer between closely located subsea systems. A planar coiled system is modeled using the electromagnetic finite element analysis software MagNet, and the simulation results are compared with those of a developed prototype; it is found that 75‐125 kHz is the optimum frequency for electrical power transfer in sea water conditions. The power transfer performance for various water gaps and offsets is identified. The results indicate that the power transfer efficiencies vary from 63.4% to 0.9% for water gaps ranging from 50 to 500 mm at an operating frequency of 125 kHz. The model is also extrapolated to flux concentrated designs, and the coil dimensions required for higher power transfer applications are identified.
