Adolescence is a period of storm and stress, because adolescents experience many challenges both from themselves (biopsychosocial factors) and the environment (environmental factors). If adolescents do not have the ability to face these challenges, they can end up with complex health problems as a result of their risky behavior. The establishment of the Youth Posyandu is expected to be a forum to facilitate adolescents in understanding adolescent health problems, find alternative solutions to problems, form youth support groups, expand the reach of the PKPR Health Center, especially for regional youth who have limited access. The purpose of this community service is to provide health education about Adolescent Reproductive Health through the “Pashmina” Youth Posyandu in the New Normal Covid 19 Era. The health education methods carried out are (1) Socialization and Licensing, (2) Affirmation and Pre Test (3) Conducting Health education on Adolescent Reproductive Health. (4) Evaluation of the results of health education activities with Post Test. The results of the activity are expected to increase and understand Adolescent Reproductive Health as indicated by an increase in adolescent reproductive health from the results of the Pre Test (before Health Education) and Post Test Results (after health education).

Introduction/Aim: Adolescents pass through three phases of an accidental crisis: the negation of real danger, feeling of confusion and chaos with the onset of the first symptoms, a complete depressive breakdown with a different range of manifestations. The Covid-19 pandemic has become a real challenge for these patients. The aim of this study is to review and analyze the clinical psychotherapeutic material of the described phases of the passage through the accidental crisis, caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. Methods: Adolescents of different ages are involved. The materials of psychotherapeutic sessions of adolescents were used in the paper, from different phases of the adolescent crisis. To explain the phase of negation of real danger, adolescents of the early and central stages of a period of adolescence are presented. To explain the phase of feelings of confusion and chaos to complete depressive breakdown, adolescents of the late and post adolescent stages of a period of adolescence are presented. Patient presentation: In adolescents, who did not show a problematic passage through the developmental crisis, the accidental crisis of the pandemic leads to the denial of the real danger. In a younger, twelve-year-old adolescent, at a specific level of functioning, there is a weakened concentration for learning. In a slightly older, fifteen-year-old adolescent, the denial of real danger, through sublimation, goes into altruism. In adolescents with already manifested problematic passage through the developmental crisis, the symptoms worsen due to the effect of the superimposed accidental crisis caused by the pandemic. In adolescents, the middle phase of adolescence, there is a mixture of real somatic problems with somatization. In the older adolescent, post adolescent phase, with addiction disease problems, the pandemic provokes irritability and low frustrating tolerance leading to complete depressive breakdown. Conclusion: We can conclude that the superposition of accidental crises always complicates the normative adolescent crisis, but we emphasize that the manifested psychopathology can be of a transient character. Psychiatric psychotherapeutic interventions are determined in relation to the degree of threatening or completely manifested decompensation from shorter counseling interventions to the intensification of deep psychotherapy, with or without adequate drug therapy.

The article deals with the conceptualisation and negotiation of post-adolescent daughters' rights and duties in their families of origin. More and more young Europeans and particularly many young Slovenians are staying with their parents in the post-adolescence period (and even later) or come home from their university city every weekend. This means that two adult generations live together in the same household; so they have to negotiate the rights and duties of the younger generation in different areas, from very personal domains (e.g. appearance) to more far-reaching life decisions (e.g. the post-study life situation, moving out of the parental home). The study provides at least a partial insight into the processes involved in the negotiation of rights and duties in families with post-adolescent daughters. The data stem from semi-structured interviews conducted in autumn 2006 in Slovenia with 70 first-born post-adolescent girls and both of their biological parents. The respondents answered closed- and open-ended questions referring to four vignettes suggesting controversial situations. The answers allow a view of the conceptualisations of post-adolescents' rights and duties, the distribution of decision-making power and the way of dealing with such situations. The results show that post-adolescent daughters are very dependent on their parents in various areas. It turned out that the contemporary Slovenian family with post-adolescent daughters is prepared to negotiate: patterns of intrafamilial communication range from the traditionally grounded commanding pattern where children have to obey unequivocally (but less than 10% of parents resort to the bare use of authority), to an open, active negotiation pattern where the balance of power is more equal and the achievement of consensus is very important.

Adolescence is a period of rapid growth and development, both physically, psychologically and intellectually. Adolescent reproductive health problems include premarital sex, early marriage, early pregnancy, drugs, and HIV/AIDS. WHO (2015) states that around 21 million teenage girls become pregnant every year and almost half (49%) experience unwanted pregnancies. Another problem that affects adolescent health is anemia. According to WHO, the prevalence of anemia in Indonesian women is 23.9%, which has an impact on stunted physical growth, behavioral and emotional disorders, decreased productivity, impaired mental and intellectual development, as well as decreased body immunity and morbidity. Along with physical and psychological changes, teenagers must adapt to the changes that occur to them. During the menstrual period, the problem of dysmenorrhea appears, which has an impact on the daily activities carried out by teenagers at school. The Community Service that will be carried out is the Formation and Training of Adolescent Health Post Management (PoKeRja) and Providing Health Education to all students. The results of implementing this activity showed that before providing education, more than half had sufficient knowledge (53.8%) and after providing education, they had good knowledge (59.6%) regarding health in adolescents. The Adolescent Health Post has been established with support from partner schools SMA 5 Muhammadyah and SMPN 1 Rancaekek as well as students who are administrators of the adolescent health post at their school.

Adolescent girls aged 15-24 are at risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS. The existence of adolescent promiscuity, inadequate knowledge of adolescents about HIV/AIDS, and lack of communication with parents on adolescent reproductive health are some related factors to the increased number of adolescents infected with sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS. Based on these situations, providing health education to adolescents is an alternative solution. The activities were carried out by implementing health education for teenage girls, conducted in four sessions. All sessions were held online, with interactive discussion methods, role play and demonstrations. A total of 18 adolescent girls participated in this activity. The final results showed that there is an increasing mean score of post-test on HIV knowledge (0.5), adolescent reproductive health (0.44), and self-esteem (0.39). There are no significant different between pre and post-test for the level of knowledge on HIV, adolescent reproductive health, adolescent risk behavior and self-esteem. Only risky behavior does not demonstrate an increase in the mean score. Providing health education to teenage girls has improved their knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS and adolescent reproductive health and increased adolescent self-esteem. However, these activities did not affect the score of teens’ behavior change. It was due to the duration of health education was not sufficient to change their behavior.

This historical study analyzes the transformation of the concept ‘adolescence’ in post-war Vietnam (1975–2005) and its implications for social work. Government-regulated media documents show that the concept of adolescence has undergone three phases corresponding to the three political-economic shifts in Vietnam over these decades: adolescents as miniature communists (1975–1986); adolescents as growing youths characterized by romantic sentiments, puberty, and identity search (1986–1995); and adolescents as the newly coined ‘teen Viet’ and vanguards of capitalist consumption (1996–2005). Social work with Vietnamese adolescents and families must consider the impact of these conceptual shifts on thoughts, emotions, and behaviors of corresponding adolescent cohorts.

The diet quality of adolescents in low-middle-income countries is low. Especially in post-disaster areas, adolescents are not a priority target for handling nutritional cases compared with other vulnerable groups. The aim of this study was to examine the factors associated with diet quality among adolescents in post-disaster areas in Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was performed with 375 adolescents aged 15–17 years, representing adolescents living close to the areas most affected by a significant disaster in 2018. The variables obtained include adolescent and household characteristics, nutritional literacy, healthy eating behavior constructs, food intake, nutritional status, physical activity, food security, and diet quality. The diet quality score was low, with only 23% of the total maximum score. Vegetables, fruits, and dairy scored the lowest, whereas animal protein sources scored the highest. Higher eating habits of animal protein sources; being healthy; normal nutritional status of adolescents; higher vegetable and sweet beverage norms of mothers; and lower eating habits of sweet snacks; animal protein sources; and carbohydrate norms of mothers are associated with higher diet quality scores in adolescents (p < 0.05). Improving the quality of adolescent diets in post-disaster areas needs to target adolescent eating behavior and changes in mothers’ eating behavior.

Background: Physical activity (PA) participation can moderate weight status and body mass index (BMI), with reduced PA being associated with weight gain and elevated BMI. Previous studies have observed lower PA engagement among individuals with a history of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) when compared to their uninjured peers. This reduction in PA may be due to activity limitations during rehabilitation and failure of some patients to return to sport. Limited evidence has also shown an increase in body weight and BMI following surgery that may remain elevated in adolescent patients up to 2 years post-ACLR. Overall, body weight and BMI changes from pre-surgery to post-ACLR for adolescents and adults are not well-understood. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess change in body weight and BMI from pre-surgery to 6 months post-ACLR in adolescent and adult patients. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted including adult (age ≥20) and adolescent (ages 13-19) patients who underwent primary, unilateral ACLR and were previously enrolled in a prospective cohort study. BMI was calculated [weight (kg)/ height (m2)] for all adult participants and BMI percentile was calculated for all participants under the age of 20 to account for changes in growth and maturation during adolescence. Pre-surgery to 6-months post-ACLR values for body mass, absolute BMI, and BMI percentile were compared using paired sample t-tests. Statistical significance was established a priori as α≤0.05. Results: One hundred and 16 adolescents with ACLR (67 female; age= 16.7 ± 1.6yrs, months since surgery= 6.2 ± 0.7) and 63 adults (29 female; age= 27.2 ± 7.4yrs, months since surgery= 6.4 ± 0.7) participated. Adolescent participants experienced a significant increase in body mass (pre-ACLR= 70.1 ± 15.1kg, post-ACLR= 72.4 ± 16.9kg; p<0.001) and BMI percentile (pre-ACLR= 65 ± 25, post-ACLR= 67 ± 25; p=0.02) from pre-surgery to 6 months post-ACLR. Adult patients also experienced a significant increase in body mass (pre-ACLR= 80.2 ± 19.9kg, post-ACLR= 82.1 ± 20.1kg; p<0.001) and BMI (pre-ACLR= 26.1 ± 4.5kg/m2, post-ACLR= 26.7 ± 4.9kg/m2; p=0.006). Conclusion: Adults and adolescents experienced an increase in body weight and BMI in the 6 months following ACLR. Revising rehabilitation to extend beyond traditional musculoskeletal strengthening to include focus on incorporation and maintenance of healthy lifestyle behaviors related to diet and PA should be considered to help patients with ACLR to minimize the potential for negative long-term effects of weight gain following surgery.

The development of technology and social media today is like a double edged knife. On the other hand, it provides many conveniences and innovations, but on the other hand it also has a negative impact, especially for users who are adolescent. The content and access presented in social media can actually trigger the birth of a private Post a Picture (PAP) area. In addition, at the age of adolescence, the development of sexuality, both physically and sexually, is taking place, coupled with the existence of special relationships between adolescents, making the barrier between private and public spaces a common thing. Through access to various chat media applications, this is the beginning of the phenomenon of post a picture photos or videos in this private area. There are two motives for adolescent to post a picture in a private area, namely the motive for sharing voluntarily and the motive for coercion. This phenomenon is a form of cyber deviance because it leads to virtual harassment in the digital space. This study uses a quantitative research approach with survey methods and uses explanatory analysis techniques. Therefore, this study aims to show the extent to which adolescent understand cyber crime and cyber deviance through the phenomenon of Post a Picture (PAP) in the private area. The results of this study indicate that what causes this phenomenon to occur is because there are several contributing factors including a lack of understanding of values and norms, as well as religious observance. In addition, this study also shows that there is a adolescents’s view that private PAP is a deviant act but is mostly done by them. This article is expected to be a stimulus and awareness to the public, especially adolescent, that this phenomenon requires holistic reinforcement so that this phenomenon can be handled optimally.

Recurrent pain is a common experience in childhood and adolescence and can result in significant disability in youth, including poor quality of life, school absences, and reduced social activities. Evidence has linked adolescent risk and resilience factors with treatment outcomes. However, less research has focused on examining risk and resilience factors that may influence or predict adolescents’ compliance to treatment within an interdisciplinary pediatric chronic pain management program. Participants included 64 adolescents (M = 15.00 ± 1.69 years); 85.9% female, 84.4% Caucasian who presented to an initial evaluation in an interdisciplinary pediatric pain management program with their caregiver. Youth completed a series of questionnaires at the initial evaluation targeting pain acceptance, self-efficacy, pain catastrophizing, parental responses, pain intensity, and functional disability. Treatment compliance was measured at 3 and 6 months post-intake. Findings indicated that higher levels of adolescent-reported self-efficacy predict decreased treatment session attendance, whereas lower levels of acceptance and parental encouragement/monitoring of symptoms predict increased treatment compliance overall. Several adolescent-reported risk factors were associated with increased functional impairment among this sample. Results highlight the unique importance of risk and resilience factors within the developmental context of adolescence, while also emphasizing the need for further investigation of other relevant influences towards treatment compliance and functional impairment.

In this paper the authors make use of Erikson's psychosocial theory and Bulhan's analysis of identity development within oppressed social groups, and explore how black adolescents may be attempting to negotiate the developmental challenges facing them within the changing socio-historical contexts of post-apartheid South Africa. It explores the impact of apartheid-capitalism on black adolescent identity development, as well as the impact of several ideological, economic and socio-political factors on these adolescents' attempts at attaining identity integration and congruence in post-apartheid South Africa. More specifically, the paper firstly argues that both the apartheid and post-apartheid socio-historical contexts have had contradictory and multiple impacts on the development of black adolescent identities and secondly, that the increasing shift from collectivist ideals to individualist ideals amongst many black adolescents, represents one possible response to these shifting socio-historical contexts.

Introduction: Despite policy actions and strategic efforts for improving the reproductive and sexual health of adolescents by promoting the uptake of adolescent reproductive and sexual health (ARSH) services, the utilisation rate remains significantly low, especially in rural areas of India. This study aimed to assess the utilisation of these services by adolescents in rural West Bengal and its associated determinants. Methods: This mixed-method study was conducted from May to September 2021 in the Gosaba rural block of South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Quantitative data were collected from 326 adolescents using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. Qualitative data were collected via four focus group discussions among 30 adolescents and key-informant interviews among six healthcare workers. Quantitative data were analysed using SPSS, while qualitative data were analysed thematically. Results: Ninety-six (29.4%) adolescents had utilised ARSH services at least once during adolescence. The factors associated with non-utilisation of ARSH services were younger age, female sex, increasing reproductive health stigma and decreasing parent–adolescent communication related to sexual health. Qualitative exploration revealed that unawareness regarding services, perceived lack of privacy and confidentiality at healthcare facilities and disruption of services post-emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic were some major barriers to ARSH service utilisation. Conclusion: A multi-component strategy, including promotion of adolescent-friendly health clinics, community support interventions associated with motivation and counselling of parents regarding the importance of adolescent reproductive health, is needed to improve the utilisation of ARSH services. Necessary steps to correct the deficiencies at the facility level should also be prioritised.

This study evaluates the effect of parent-child money communication on financial autonomy of the adolescents by considering the gender of the parent as a controlled variable by utilizing pre- and post- survey based experimental research design. The sample consisted of 300 female parents and their children under adolescence stage of life. Assuming that claim is often made by parents regarding their frequent money communication with their children, their children were asked to rate their perception towards parent’s money communication with them. Later, their female parent (mother) were invited for financial education workshops series and asked to complete pre-survey before they attended the first financial education workshop. The follow-up survey was done for female parents and their adolescent children six months after completion of the financial education workshop series. In both the surveys, 300 responses were collected from female parents and adolescents on nineteen pairs of money communication, wherein parents were not told that their children were also asked to rate the matching pair of each item of parent money communication scale and vice versa. The financial autonomy was measured by using pre- and post- surveys, wherein only adolescents participated in the surveys. The results of paired t-test provides noticeable conclusion that financial education given to the parent positively enhances money communication among parent-adolescent by reducing the disparity in the responses collected from the parents and adolescents on each matched pairs separately and collectively and this reduced disparity leads to enhance the financial autonomy of the adolescents. The findings may help policy makers and financial educators to design and implement such workshops which may open lines of “money communication” between parents and children. Key words: financial education workshops, parent-adolescent money communication, financial autonomy.

Abstract Swiss adolescents generally enjoy satisfying life conditions. Nonetheless, violence, suicide and mental health are the main concerns together with injuries, chronic conditions and eating disorders. Adolescents still face barriers to access the care they need. Adequate training can improve practitioners’ skills when dealing with adolescents. The last two decades have seen the development of innovative adolescent health units and networks in various regions of Switzerland as well as research and public health programmes. Training programmes in adolescent health (continuous medical education, post-graduate or pre-graduate) for physicians and nurses are developing but still patchy in Switzerland. Adolescent health is not a sub-specialty as such. Efforts have to be made in order to link with professional associations and institutions to implement adolescent health curricula more efficiently.

SummaryCounselling on contraception and contraceptive method provision are key components of post-abortion care (PAC). Some studies have suggested that adolescent PAC patients receive worse care than older women seeking these services. This study aimed to evaluate an intervention whose goal was to improve the counselling and contraceptive uptake of PAC patients, with special attention given to the needs of adolescent patients, in the four public hospitals in the Dominican Republic where PAC services were not being routinely offered. The counselling intervention effort included provider training and the development of adolescent-friendly information, education and communication (IEC) materials. Eighty-eight providers were interviewed at baseline and 6 months after the intervention was implemented. Six months after providers were trained, 140 adolescent PAC patients (≤19 years of age) and 134 older PAC patients (20–35 years) were interviewed about the contraceptive counselling messages and contraceptive methods they received before they were discharged from hospital. The adolescent and older PAC patients were matched on study hospital and time of arrival. Significant improvements were noted in provider knowledge and attitudes. No changes were noted in provider-reported PAC counselling behaviours, with close to 70% of providers reporting they routinely assess patients' fertility intentions, discuss contraception, assess STI/HIV risk and discuss post-abortion complications. Adolescent and older PAC patients reported receiving PAC counselling messages at similar rates. Forty per cent of adolescent PAC patients and 45% of older PAC patients who wanted to delay pregnancy were discharged with a contraceptive method. Adolescents were more likely to receive an injectable contraceptive method whereas older women were discharged with a variety of methods. The PAC counselling intervention increased provider knowledge and improved their attitudes and benefited both adolescent and older patients.

AbstractObjectiveTo assess the nutritional status and risk factors of undernutrition in post-menarcheal girls in rural northern Bangladesh.DesignCross-sectional data on anthropometric measurements, dietary intake, work activity, morbidity and socio-economic status were collected from 12- to 19-year-old primigravidae (n 209) and never-pregnant adolescents (n 456) matched on age and time since menarche. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to determine predictors of stunting, thinness, upper-arm muscle (UAMZ) and fat area Z-scores (UAFZ) among the adolescent girls.ResultsA large proportion of adolescents (49 %) were stunted (height-for-age Z-score <−2) and underweight (40 %; weight-for-age Z-score <−2), but not thin (BMI-for-age <5th percentile; ∼10 %). The mean (sd) UAMZ and UAFZ of the adolescent girls was −0·3 (0·64) and −0·9 (0·40), respectively. Lean mass increased whereas fat mass declined with age. Both stunting and thinness were positively associated with age and time since menarche (P < 0·05). Young age (12–14 years) and literacy were protective against stunting among pregnant adolescents (OR = 0·29, 95 % CI 0·09, 0·88 and OR = 0·50, 95 % CI 0·26, 0·96, respectively). Having symptoms of diarrhoea or dysentery (OR = 7·40, 95 % CI 1·43, 38·29) predicted thinness and was associated with lower UAMZ and UAFZ among never-pregnant girls (both P < 0·05). Performing light-to-moderate activities was protective against thinness among never-pregnant girls (OR = 0·43, 95 % CI 0·22, 0·82), whereas pregnant adolescents who performed high levels of strenuous activities had greater UAMZ (P < 0·05).ConclusionUndernutrition was widespread among this post-menarcheal adolescent population. Younger and literate adolescents were less likely to be stunted, whereas thinness and body composition were associated with morbidity and work activity.

Repetitive mild traumatic brain injury during adolescence can induce neurological dysfunction through undefined mechanisms. Interleukin-1 (IL-1) contributes to experimental adult diffuse and contusion TBI models, and IL-1 antagonists have entered clinical trials for severe TBI in adults; however, no such data exist for adolescent TBI. We developed an adolescent mouse repetitive closed head injury (rCHI) model to test the role of IL-1 family members in post-injury neurological outcome. Compared to one CHI, three daily injuries (3HD) produced acute and chronic learning deficits and emergence of hyperactivity, without detectable gliosis, neurodegeneration, brain atrophy, and white matter loss at one year. Mature IL-1β and IL-18 were induced in brain endothelium in 3HD but not 1HD, three hit weekly, or sham animals. IL-1β processing was induced cell-autonomously in three-dimensional human endothelial cell cultures subjected to in vitro concussive trauma. Mice deficient in IL-1 receptor-1 or caspase-1 had improved post-injury Morris water maze performance. Repetitive mild CHI in adolescent mice may induce behavioral deficits in the absence of significant histopathology. The endothelium is a potential source of IL-1β and IL-18 in rCHI, and IL-1 family members may be therapeutic targets to reduce or prevent neurological dysfunction after repetitive mild TBI in adolescents.

Teenagers have an essential role as part of the development. The proportion of youth ranks highest in the overall population in the world, including Indonesia. The development of the digital world occurs along with the transition of adolescent life which has both good and bad impacts. The impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic became an accelerator for increasing the utility of youth towards digital media. The increase in risky behavior due to technological developments carried out by adolescents raises concerns. On the other hand, technological developments can also positively impact increasing knowledge and attitudes/behaviors, especially regarding health and reproductive issues which are closely related to adolescent development. The purpose of this study was to analyze the knowledge and attitudes/ behaviors of adolescents related to reproductive health, adolescent characteristics and differences in adolescent knowledge according to their demographic characteristics and to analyze the use of digital media for Communication, Information, and Education (IEC) for post-pandemic adolescent reproductive health. This research is quantitative research and the unit of analysis used is the individual level (adolescents). The number of samples was 130 youth and data were analyzed by descriptive quantitative. The results of the study show that adolescents’ knowledge of reproductive health is in a good category, but still needs to be improved. Likewise, regarding attitudes and behavior, there are a few teenagers who have attitudes and behaviors which are vulnerable to problems, such as the consumption of alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, free sexual relations, and others. There are four major digital platforms which are often used and teenagers are comfortable using them to access reproductive health knowledge and information, specifically online mass media, Instagram (IG), Tiktok, and Youtube.

Adolescence is also a period of mental change that can fluctuate. This pandemic results in changes in any behavior related to adolescents. The psychological condition of adolescents, who are generally still vulnerable and easily disturbed, is further exacerbated by conditions in the surrounding environment that do not support them in carrying out their usual activities. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of the health promotion model through the peer group education method on changes in health behavior intentions in adolescents during the Covid-19 pandemic in Medan City. The research method used a quasi-experimental pretest and post-test design with one control group with a sample of 65 adolescents aged 13-18 years using purposive sampling technique. Data analysis was carried out using the Paired t test (p = 0.000). The results of the analysis stated that there was an effect of providing education using the peer group education method given to adolescents on changes in adolescent behavior during the covid 19 pandemic which was seen from the aspect of reproductive health, adolescent psychological disorders and the impact of using gadgets that must be supervised by parents

Abstract Objective This study set out to examine the role of parenting practices in protecting or exacerbating the negative effects of parent and adolescent stress on adolescent body mass index (BMI) over time. Separate longitudinal models were conducted to evaluate how parenting practices interacted with parental perceived stress and adolescent perceived stress in predicting adolescent BMI. Methods Baseline data were collected from 148 African American adolescents (Mage = 12.93, SD = 1.75; Mz-BMI = 0.78, SD = 0.50; MBMI%-ile = 96.7, SD = 3.90) and their caregivers (Mage = 44.45, SD = 8.65; MBMI = 37.63, SD = 8.21) enrolled in the Families Improving Together for Weight Loss trial. Adolescents self-reported their perceptions of caregiver parenting style and feeding practices. Both caregivers and adolescents self-reported their perceptions of chronic stress. BMI for parents and adolescents was assessed objectively at baseline and 16 weeks post-intervention. Results Hierarchical regression models predicting adolescent BMI z-score (z-BMI) indicated a significant interaction between parental perceived stress and parental pressure to eat. Simple slopes analyses demonstrated that for those parents that exhibit higher pressure to eat, parent stress was positively associated with adolescent z-BMI. Conclusions These findings provide preliminary support suggesting that certain parenting practices interact with chronic stress on adolescent weight-related outcomes and that future interventions may consider integrating these factors.

This analysis examined the contribution of personal, family (maternal and paternal support; sibling support) and extra-familiar (peer support; other adults) resilience to the prediction of clinical levels of PTSD symptoms in adolescents reporting sexual abuse. Controls were established for abuse-related variables (type of abuse, severity and multiple abuse) in a representative sample of high schools students in the province of Quebec. A total of 15.2% of adolescent females and 4.4% adolescent males in high school reported a history of sexual abuse in childhood. Sexually abused adolescent females (27.8%) were more likely than adolescent males (14.9%) to achieve scores with high clinical levels of PTSD. Hierarchical logistic regression revealed that over and above the characteristics of the sexual abuse experienced, resilience factors (maternal and peer support) contributed to the prediction of symptoms of PTSD attaining the clinical threshold. Alternative intervention and prevention practices geared to adolescent victims of sexual assault are discussed.

While investigations of adolescents' coping strategies are useful, high-ability students face pressures, such as a lack of challenge in school or anti-intellectual school climates, that further complicate the tumultuous changes associated with adolescence. The purpose of this study is to produce evidence of demographic effects, or the lack thereof, in gifted adolescents' coping in order to guide affective intervention efforts with this population. The Adolescent Coping Scale was administered to 749 gifted students attending two different summer enrichment programs. MANOVA with post hoc descriptive discriminant analysis provides little evidence of gender or grade differences but suggests the presence of moderate racial differences.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine conditions in women. PCOS may be more challenging to diagnose during adolescence due to an overlap with the physiological events of puberty, which are part of the diagnostic criteria in adult women. This review focuses on the evidence available in relation to PCOS diagnostic criteria for adolescents. Adolescent PCOS should be diagnosed using two main criteria irregular -menstrual cycles (relative to number of years post-menarche) and hyperandrogenism (clinical and/or biochemical); after excluding other conditions that mimic PCOS. Accurate definitions of the two main criteria will decrease challenges/controversies with the diagnosis and provide timely diagnosis during adolescence to establish early management. Despite the attempts to create accurate diagnostic criteria and definitions, this review highlights the limited research in this area, especially in the follow up of adolescents presenting with one diagnostic feature that are called “at risk of PCOS”. Studies in adolescents continue to use the Rotterdam diagnostic criteria that uses pelvic ultrasound. This is inappropriate, because previous and emerging data that show many healthy adolescents have polycystic ovarian morphology in the early years post-menarche. In the future, anti-Müllerian hormone levels might help support PCOS diagnosis if adolescents meet two main criteria.

Adolescence is a nutritionally vulnerable and critical life stage. However, few programs and policies focus on improving adolescent nutrition in Indonesia. To address this gap, we implemented a gender-responsive package of interventions: (1) breakfast and weekly iron-folic acid supplementation (WIFS), (2) a school-based nutrition education program, and (3) a social behavior change communication strategy. We surveyed 514 adolescents at baseline (2019) and endline (2020) in Klaten and Lombok Barat districts in Indonesia. The survey included a knowledge assessment on nutrition, as well as indicators of attitudes and behaviors on diet, physical activity, and WIFS. We employed multivariable linear and logistic regression to test for pre–post intervention differences. Overall knowledge was significantly higher post-intervention (β: 3.3; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.6, 3.9). Diet diversity was high at both timepoints, however, at post-intervention there was significantly higher odds of consuming vitamin A-rich fruits and vegetables (Odds Ratio [OR]: 1.5; 95% CI: 1.1, 2.0) and lower odds of consuming sugar-sweetened beverages (OR: 0.4; 95% CI: 0.3, 0.5). Post-intervention, there was higher odds of reporting 60 min of daily physical activity (OR: 2.3; 95% CI: 1.7, 3.2) and WIFS among girls (OR: 6.7; 95% CI: 1.5, 30.9). The package of interventions may be a promising first step to improving adolescent nutrition in Indonesia.
