China's economic structure has been unbalanced for a long time, and now it faces the severe challenge of the aging population. This article will deeply analyze the impact of population aging from the aspects of social impact, labor force and medical security. With the unexpected arrival of an aging society, the government, society, and individuals should remain calm. They should recognize the negative and positive aspects of its effect on social development. The reduction of cheap labor will undoubtedly harm the development of labor-intensive enterprises. However, it can force these businesses to increase their labor productivity rate, move into the field of high technology and high added value, and increase the employment rate of college students and another high-quality talent. Moreover, the aging population will drive the growth of the elderly economy and related service industries such as home Economy. In this article, we will also list several ways to solve the economic crisis caused by the aging population

The intensification of population aging affects all aspects of society. Among them, it has a particular impact on economic growth. Some scholars believe that aging will stimulate economic development, while more people believe that aging will burden the economy. Based on research on the five major gross domestic product factors: consumption, investment, government spending, net exports, and the labor market, the aging population brings more harmful effects to the growth of gross domestic production rather than optimistic effects. The aging population only benefits the government expenditure that the government consumes and invests more funds in the aging population. The increasing government expenditure directly raises the gross domestic product. By contrast, the excessive government spending will trigger more critical fiscal problems. Thus, compared with the negative impact on GDP in other areas, the increase in government spending cannot offset those adverse impacts. The government has to take steps to balance the plethora of adverse effects.

This article is dedicated to the theoretical-methodological aspects of studying economic security of the territory in the conditions of aging of the population. The author traces the evolution of interpretation of the concept of “economic security”. Analysis is conducted on the conceptual construct of studying economic security of the territory that has established in scientific literature. The polemical character of determination of the object of economic security of the territory is indicated. The author considers the nuances of using the concepts of “national interests” and “state interests”; examines the traditional triad “interests – threats – protection” of studying economic security in the conditions of aging of the population. The theory of economic security is augmented with the provisions of the neoclassical theory of human capital and theoretical models of generational economics that take into account the age structure of the population of the territory. In the conditions of aging of the population, the state interests in the economic sphere and the interests of the senior citizens are considered as the object of economic security. The model for the formation of the effective instrument of protecting state interests in the economic sphere and interests of the senior citizens from the threats caused by socioeconomic consequences of population aging is built from the perspective of the theory of economic security, theory of human capital, and theoretical models of generational economy. The author clarifies the concept of economic security of the territory in the conditions of aging of the population, which implies protection of the objects (state interests in the economic sphere and interests of the senior citizens) from threats caused by socioeconomic consequences of population aging.

China, being a populous country, is facing the challenges and opportunities brought by population aging. This research paper explores the potential of delayed retirement as a policy intervention to address the impact of population aging on China's social and economic development. The paper reviews relevant literature on the challenges and implications of an aging population, discusses the current situation of population aging in China, and analyzes the potential benefits and limitations of delayed retirement as a policy response. The research finds that China's population is still relatively abundant in labor resources, but aging poses challenges to social and economic development. Delayed retirement, as a policy intervention, has social value and economic significance in alleviating the aging problem. However, limitations such as the lack of data on the long-term impact of population aging on the economy and the absence of official implementation of delayed retirement in China should be acknowledged. The paper also highlights the need for future research to focus on motivating workers to accept and actively choose delayed retirement, prioritizing young people's employment opportunities, addressing fertility issues, and considering a global perspective in contrasting the problems faced by developed and developing countries. In conclusion, while delayed retirement holds potential as a policy intervention for addressing the challenges of population aging in China, further research is needed to fully understand its impact and limitations. By adopting a comprehensive approach that considers the economic, social, healthcare, and employment aspects of aging, policymakers can develop effective strategies to promote the well-being and sustainability of an aging society in China and beyond.

Addressing the issue of aging is a significant pressure and challenge for developing countries. However, the pressure can be turned into motivation, and there are opportunities in the challenges. The rapidly growing aging population brings much room for the development of the senior industry. Therefore, it is essential for China to pay attention to population aging and to conduct relevant economic policy research.

Abstract With the deepening of reform and opening up, Guangdong’s economic vitality continues to be maintained. People’s living standards and medical conditions have further improved, the population’s life expectancy has gradually increased, and the aging of the population has intensified. With the data of the elderly population aged 65 and above in Guangdong Province from 2011 to 2020, a metabolic GM (1,1) model is established based on the grey system theory, and the predictive value of the established model is tested. The results show: Q= 0.005189 ≤ 0.01; the mean square deviation ratio c= 0.064 ≤ 0.35; the test accuracy of the model is class I. The metabolic GM (1,1) model predicts that the population aged 65 and over in Guangdong Province will continue to increase in the next five years, and the problem of population aging is still severe. Therefore, it is necessary to change the situation. In the past, solutions to population aging only focused on the aspects of changing the population policy and the pension system. Now, we should fully consider the interrelationship of population aging on economic growth, savings and consumption, macroeconomic balance, and other indicators. We should actively respond to the urgent reality of the population aging in Guangdong with a systematic strategy.

Objective: To determine pharmacists' perceptions of the influence of older patients on community pharmacy practice. Data Sources: A mailing list obtained from the South Carolina Board of Pharmacy provided names of community pharmacists by practice setting and gender. Design: A questionnaire was mailed in July 1990 to a random sample of community pharmacists in South Carolina. The questionnaire contained 41 Likert-type opinion statements. Demographic questions relating to practice type and location, pharmacists' educational experiences, and position were included. Data Synthesis: The opinion statements were examined by grouping respondents on the basis of demographic information. Analysis of variance or Student's t-test was used to look for differences among survey responses among various groups of pharmacists. Scheffe's test was used to compare means when the groups were significantly different. The a priori level of significance was 0.05. Critical values were adjusted by the number of statements considered to preserve the error rate at five percent (Bonferroni procedure). Conclusions: The strongest indicator of the impact of the elderly population on community pharmacy is pharmacists' perceived need for more continuing education in geriatrics and gerontology. Economic problems, physician overprescribing, and patient compliance were ranked as the three most difficult aspects of geriatric pharmacy. This study reinforces the need to incorporate geriatric/gerontology education into every pharmacy curriculum.

The issue of aging and old age is becoming a significant social phenomenon that captures the attention of numerous scientific disciplines. Cognitive changes in the elderly population are a field of great interest to the scientific and professional community. Given the tendency of the world's elderly population to increase, this topic is becoming increasingly important for both individuals and society as a whole, considering the health, legal, social, and economic aspects. The subject of this research is the cognitive functioning of healthy older urban populations and the importance of promoting active aging programs to preserve cognitive capacities in old age. The problem addressed in this research is to determine the extent to which unrecognized cognitive impairment is present in the older population, where respondents do not spontaneously report cognitive functioning difficulties. The aim of this research is to determine the degree, frequency, and modalities of cognitive impairment in terms of specific cognitive functions (orientation, attention and calculation, recall, writing, visuospatial construction) and to assess the importance of recommendations for preserving cognitive capacities in old age through the promotion of active/healthy aging. The method used was systematic nonexperimental observation. The sample was convenient and consisted of 60 volunteers, aged 60 years or older, who had never consulted a doctor for cognitive or psychiatric problems. The Mini Mental Status Examination test (MMSE) was used in the study. The results obtained show that dementia of mild degree was diagnosed in 3.3% of the respondents, and of moderate to severe degree in 3.3% of the respondents, which is an interesting finding considering that the surveyed sample consisted of individuals who did not complain of cognitive impairments. Additionally, the results regarding the prevalence of impairments in specific cognitive functions show that impairments in recall of previously presented verbal material were most prevalent (66.7% of respondents), while impairments in orientation were least prevalent (8.3% of respondents). The results indicate a statistically significant correlation between age and degree of cognitive impairment, age and cognitive function of attention, and age and cognitive function of recall. Furthermore, there is a statistically significant correlation between years of formal education and degree of cognitive impairment, years of formal education and the following cognitive functions: orientation, recall, and sentence writing. The results highlight the need for more detailed diagnostics and monitoring of cognitive abilities in the elderly, as well as the need for promoting and implementing prevention programs for the elderly population at risk of dementia.

This article argues that the aging population significantly affects the welfare state. Social investment strategies could respond to a changed economic and social order by enhancing active aging. While the social investment perspective has been a topic of discussion for decades, certain aspects remain underexplored. This study, therefore, aims to assess the impact of social investments on active aging. The study, based on the social investment approach and active aging model, analyzes quantitative data from Wave 8 of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). The Lithuania sample included 1437 participants. In the analytical phase, Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis were utilized (SPSS ver. 26). The findings unveil four active aging profiles (low activity, moderate activity, balanced activity, and high activity). The two groups are distinguished by aging conditions, such as poor health, lack of social investment, and high reliance on social benefits. The positive impact of social investment is underscored by the improved aging conditions outlined in the last two profiles. This study enriches the social investment research domain by providing valuable insights into the influence of social investment policies on the lives of older individuals and their potential to age actively.

Abstract Population aging is becoming an inevitable phenomenon in Albanian post-socialist society, posing multi-faceted challenges to its individuals, families and society as a whole. Since 1991, the Albanian population has been exposed to intensive demographic changes caused by unintended aspects of socio-economic transition from a planned socialist economy to a market-oriented capitalist one (Hoff, 2008). Ongoing processes of re-organization of social institutions increased its socio-economic insecurity leading to the application of various coping mechanisms. While adjusting themselves to other aspects of life, people changed their decisions of having children and leaving the country (Hoff, 2008). On the other hand, replacement of former traditional extended family forms with diverse living arrangements and family structures has been the outcome of the combination of three factors: falling fertility, increasing life expectancy and increasing migration (INSTAT, 2014). However, family remains the basic social unit that provides support, care and protection for its old members even though its capacities are diminishing. Family Life Cycle Theory views family development as a series of stages where family members deal with various developmental tasks and play different roles as they move from one stage to another. This paper examines population aging in Albanian post-socialist society (after 1990). Based on Family Life Cycle Theory and Family Development Theory, it reviews literature and uses secondary data to discuss its implications for elderly care and family life. It concludes that population aging requires better understanding of this process in order to facilitate a series of family adaptations to respond to the changing needs of its elderly members.

Research background: The issue of population aging, recently discussed across the entire society, has greatly affected all generations of the society. The aging is a long-term and natural process that governments should be ready to accommodate if they want to keep the demographic situation stable despite the increasing fertility and decreasing mortality of inhabitants. Purpose of the article: The resultant changes in population can be attributed primarily to better healthcare, to social and economic development and to new patterns of reproductive behavior. Developing countries have lately been experiencing a more rapid pace of population aging than the developed ones, where the process has had much longer history (United Nations, 2019). Methods: The paper aims to present newly found facts, to offer their wider context and, with the benefit of practical experience, to analyze, evaluate, argue and interpret the dynamics of population aging, while identifying its causes and effects. To accomplish the aim, the author has defined these milestones: searching and discussing relevant literature; characterizing major causes of population aging; defining indicators useful for measuring the process of aging; applying chosen demographic indicators to analyze trends in population aging; interpreting what can be considered “active” aging; and appraising the positive and negative aspects of population aging. Findings & Value added: The SWOT analysis, relying on information obtained from the current Internet and literary sources, has assessed the strengths and weaknesses of population aging together with the process´s opportunities and threats. The research method was chosen so that the found facts could be synthesized and abstracted. The text is based on statistical data and demographic prognoses of population aging, specifically on the World Population Prospect database administered by the United Nations.

Abstract: this article touches upon the topic of improving China's employment policy and demographic policy in the context of population aging. The author gives a brief description of the structure of the population of China, as well as its current trends. Particular attention is paid to the impact of population aging on the country's economic growth, as well as the development of technology to level negative situations in the labor market. As a result, it was found that, given the impact of demographic changes on economic growth, policymakers should take various measures to counter “active aging” in a timely manner, including the following aspects. First, the government needs to accelerate economic development and change the economic development model. Secondly, the government needs to improve and adjust the birth rate policy. Third, governments at all levels should support the quality development of the emerging aging industry. Fourth, the government needs to improve the provision and service system for the elderly. In addition, governments should improve the health insurance system, explore ways to create a long-term care insurance system, improve social security and social assistance systems for the elderly, and develop public charitable organizations.

The Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration (YRDUA) is China’s most representative region with remarkable economic development vitality. The purpose of this study is to provide valuable data analysis to actively respond to the population aging in China. We mainly focus on the spatial and temporal evolution of population aging in YRDUA from 2000 to 2020 using city-level population data. This study constructs a multi-dimensional index system to measure population aging including population aging degree, speed, and density. It finds out: (1) the elderly population rate (EPR), the elder-child ratio (ECR), and the elderly dependency ratio (EDR) in the YRDUA area are gradually increasing from 2000 to 2020. In addition, the trends of these indicators in various cities and regions are relatively consistent. All 27 cities in YRDUA entered an aging society, from the primary to the moderate aging stage from 2000 to 2010 and from the moderate to the hyper aging stage from 2010 to 2020. (2) the absolute and relative growth rate of EPR is increasing from 2000 to 2020. However, the absolute and relative growth rate of ECR is increasing from 2000 to 2010 and then decreasing from 2010 to 2020. These results indicate that the two-child policy adopted by the Chinese government plays a positive role. (3) the density level of the elderly population in the YRDUA evolved from low in 2000 to middle in 2010 and then to high in 2020. (4) There are remarkable differences in the process of population aging among three provinces and one city. The contribution of this study is mainly reflected in two aspects: firstly, it constructs a multi-dimensional index system to measure population aging; secondly, using this multi-dimensional index system, it systematically observes the spatial and temporal evolution of population aging from 2000 to 2020 in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration.

The article discusses the place of women in modern Japanese society. It is established that in recent years, the transformation of socio-economic processes in Japanese society has intensified, which consists in a gradual transition from traditional Japanese values based mainly on the family as the main unit of Japanese society to modern, Western-oriented ones that focus on women’s self-identification and self-determination. Analysis of opinion polls has shown that recently women in Japan at earlier reproductive ages do not consider the creation of a family and the birth of children a priority in life. The forecast of the female population up to 2025 is made by major age groups. With the overall decline in the female population of Japan, the number of women aged 65 and older will continue to grow until 2040, due to the demographic aging of the entire population of Japan, caused by a low birth rate and high life expectancy. It is established that the birth rate is decreasing from year to year, and, at the moment, there are no objective factors to change the situation.

Many countries of the world consider the well-being of citizens to be one of their most important goals. Nowadays there is a growing concern about the well-being of older people. Considering the aging population, there is a call for social policies aimed at strengthening the well-being of older people. Therefore, recommendations were prepared for policymakers on possible ways to strengthen the well-being of the older age Lithuanian population. The recommendations are based on data from the 7th wave of the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). There were 2014 persons aged 50 and older interviewed in Lithuania in the 7th wave of the SHARE survey. Data on various aspects of well-being, health, work and economic situation, childhood circumstances, experiences of discrimination were analyzed. Based on different aspects of well-being it was found, that respondents can be grouped into high, low, and medium well-being clusters, moreover the analysis showed that the Lithuanian population has relatively low well-being compared to other countries. Recommendations were formulated covering possible measures for chronic diseases, co-morbid mental health disorders, work, economic situation, childhood environment, and personal life history. The recommendations are addressed to health, social and employment, education, and science policymakers.

After the regime change in Romania significant changes in the structure of the population can also be observed, one aspect of which is aging. Our research examines the Romanian aspects of the silver economy on the example of Érmellék micro region. The studied North Bihor area is a disadvantaged micro-region where the social and economic changes of the last 30 years have not brought an easier life. These social changes can be seen in ethnic change, aging, the feminization of aging, and low educational attainment. According to economic indicators, people living here are characterized by low income and commuting lifestyle for working purposes. Accession to the European Union is mostly reflected in the increase in the number of border crossings points and cross-border labor force migration in this region. Thus, our research concerns the examination of the situation of the aging and elderly generation in Érmellék along the measures and services of the silver economy. After defining the concept of the silver economy and presenting the dimensions of the Active Aging Index, an analysis of the empirical data follows. Our study interprets the silver economy as a set of economic opportunities that address both the public and consumer expenditures associated with an aging population and the specific needs of the population over 50 years. During the data processing, through qualitative approach of the elderly population quality of life, we sought the answer to the question of the extent to which the silver economy, or some of its dimensions, can be accessed in Érmellék. In our study, we integrated the analysis of information from focus group interviews, professional and in-depth interviews in the framework of the exploratory research into the dimensions provided by the Active Aging Index. Along with the applied analytical logic, the presentation of the individual dimensions was supplemented with the processing of qualitative empirical material in addition to the secondary data, so we could get to know the conditions of active aging in Érmellék and the possibilities of the regional silver economy. The United Nations identified decent work and economic growth as a sustainable development goal for 2030. Decent work is a term that sums up aspirations for people in their working lives. One of the factors that influences the achievement of decent work is aging. This article examines how aspects of aging and organizational factors affect work ability across the lifespan and throughout one’s work career. Additionally, the critical issue of worker physical mobility was also addressed as a practical limitation to functional aging. Through our investigation, we identified gaps in the literature where research and interventions should be promoted. These include early disability studies; population dashboards of workers’ health metrics; intervention and cost effectiveness in health promotion and prevention of early functional aging at work; policies for tailoring demands to individual needs and abilities; and inequities of social protection for aging workers.

Demographic change is leading to the aging of German society. As long as the baby boom cohorts are still of working age, the working population will also age—and decline as soon as this baby boom generation gradually reaches retirement age. At the same time, there has been a trend toward increasing absenteeism (times of inability to work) in companies since the zero years, with the number of days of absence increasing with age. We present a novel stochastic forecast approach that combines population forecasting with forecasts of labor force participation trends, considering epidemiological aspects. For this, we combine a stochastic Monte Carlo-based cohort-component forecast of the population with projections of labor force participation rates and morbidity rates. This article examines the purely demographic effect on the economic costs associated with such absenteeism due to the inability to work. Under expected future employment patterns and constant morbidity patterns, absenteeism is expected to be close to 5 percent by 2050 relative to 2020, associated with increasing economic costs of almost 3 percent. Our results illustrate how strongly the pronounced baby boom/baby bust phenomenon determines demographic development in Germany in the midterm.

Migration is historically a social phenomenon that not only has a significant effect on politics, economics, and social aspects but also presents challenges to the security of states and alters population composition in countries. Labor migration and its investigation are becoming a society-wide phenomenon because of the labor force shortage as well as the aging population. The Slovak Republic is a country that faces the outflow of qualified workers abroad, and the country’s index of aging is one of the most dynamic in Europe. The current study aims at examining the relations and the reasons for emigration to work from the Slovak Republic. To identify the causes of labor emigration in the Slovak Republic, a survey was conducted to explore the decisions of people to emigrate for work, the duration of the stay abroad and the possibility of returning to Slovakia. This study also analyses the relationship between GDP growth and improvement of the economic situation in Slovakia, the number of labor emigrants, as well as the relationship between the minimum wage and the number of labor migrants.

The European Union is going through a period of profound transformation due to socio-economic and demographic changes. Europe's population is aging as a result of declining fertility and increasing life expectancy, and its share of the world's population continues to decline. The top 10 countries on the planet with the oldest populations include nine EU countries. Older citizens are increasingly shaping the economy, constituting a growing segment in many areas of consumption. The expansion of this age group is expected to lead to an increased demand in many sectors, and in the not-too-distant future will provide significant economic opportunities for European businesses. The so-called “silver economy” (or longevity economy) is a concept of responding to and adapting to the challenges determined by demographic shifts at the global, regional and country levels by inclusively supporting job growth and productivity in traditional and new sectors of the modern digital economy, acceptable to government, business and the entire population, and supposedly capable of becoming the engine of the future economy. Population aging, its density, and household size, in turn, have also had an impact on the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, whose outbreak tested health and welfare systems as well as economic and social sustainability. This is why demographic processes need to be taken into account in the post-pandemic economic cycle, managing their long-term effects has many different aspects concerning health care, including care for the elderly, as well as government budgets. The integration of digital solutions, robotic technologies in these areas can significantly empower the elderly, promote independent and active lifestyles, and integrate into the labor market. Thus, it can be argued that the potential risks of the modern demographic transition are not inevitable, and the challenge is to find tools, opportunities and means to adapt the economy and society to it.

The ageing of the population is one of the main challenges Japan is facing. It occurs under the influence of both the economic achievements of the country and the peculiarities of the demographic situation. The article considers three aspects of population ageing – the position of elderly Japanese in the labor market and the problem of their employment, the financial situation and the level of consumption of elderly citizens, as well as the impact of population ageing on the situation in the social security system. The elderly Japanese have become an important reserve of the workforce, which compensates for the reduction in the number of young workers. Their economic activity has significantly increased in the last decade, in particularly due to the purposeful policy of the state, which legislatively establishes rules for extending the employment of workers after reaching the teinen. The incomes of elderly Japanese allow most of them to maintain a fairly high level of consumption, and non-working citizens use their savings for this purpose too. The state policy of smoothing economic inequality in this group, which increases sharply after entering retirement age due to increased diversification of lifestyles, also contributes to maintaining a decent standard of living for older citizens. In general, the absolute and relative growth in the number of senior citizens among Japanese consumers does not lead to a reduction in the volume of the consumer market, although it affects in a certain way the structure of goods and services offered in it. The most obvious negative consequence of the ageing of the population is a sharp increase in the share of spending on senior citizens in the total state spending on the welfare sphere. The main part of their financing is borne by working generations, and the inevitable further change in the ratio between the number of working Japanese and the number of elderly citizens in favor of the latter threatens to further aggravate the problem of financing the country’s welfare system. Considering the tools offered by Japanese specialists, the author believes that Japan will be able to preserve the obvious achievements in the field of social security without overstraining its financing system.

In recent years, the global trend of population aging and its inherent features have changed the research agenda for studying older age groups. The paper is devoted to the definition of the main subject areas that are in the focus of active and delayed aging research in Russia and abroad. For the scientometric analysis, the databases Scopus and eLibrary (RSCI) were used. The study used the method of scientometric mapping using the VOSviewer program. The following terms were chosen as search terms: active aging / longevity, delayed aging, healthsaving behavior, late maturity, employment of the elderly. The analysis showed an increase in the popularity of the topic of employment in recent years, including gender-differentiating aspects. The topic of activity is more often presented in the context of “active longevity (aging)”, although at the content level the global aging process and its dynamics differ markedly from the situation of the social group of the elderly in different countries. In the topic “Activity of the elderly”, the presence of medical topics is more clearly expressed. Thematic clustering of keywords and phrases showed the multifactor nature of the studied phenomena and the need for their multidisciplinary study. It was found that articles in the social sciences are devoted to issues of social communication, adaptation, inclusion, as well as medical data and assessments of various parameters of the health of the elderly, as well as economic parameters, comparison of statistical indicators of aging, psychological and political aspects of aging.

There is a growing interest in developing a deeper level of understanding of the complex phenomena that make up the aging process. Efforts to pursue questions using a multivariate and ecologically valid approaches that include biological and behavioral factors have led to significant advances in our knowledge. This special issue presents a collection of papers that represent this “biobehavioral” perspective. Little is known concerning the biobehavioral aspects of Hispanic health and there is a dearth of systematic study of how individual biological factors interact with the environmental and cultural factors to affect health outcomes among the swiftly growing older population of Mexican origin, a subgroup of older minorities that exhibits unique morbidity and mortality patterns. The group of papers here represents important contributions to understanding the health consequences in later life for individuals of Mexican descent and addresses several areas of interest including but not limited to diabetes, cognitive impairment, metabolic syndrome, frailty, socio-economic status and contextual factors that impact health. The papers presented here use interesting and useful transdisciplinary approaches that increase our knowledge of health processes in older people of Mexican descent. This special issue also provides excellent examples of the critical linkages between biological variables broadly defined and traditional social stratification, social inequalities, and social justice and the ways in which they interact. The papers taken together suggest that the processes involved in aging and health are complex, particularly in people of Mexican descent, and requires the understanding of mechanisms at multiple causes and levels of analysis.

In this study, we employ ‘hidden workers’ as a key concept to integrate the three vulnerable subgroups of aging workers: underemployed, unemployed, and discouraged workers. (1) Background: The challenges faced by underemployed, unemployed, and discouraged workers in the older population are complex. It would be beneficial to visualize the intellectual landscape of these three distinct groups in aging populations to understand which aspects have been highlighted by various disciplines and where gaps exist. (2) Method: Through a scientometric analysis of more than 50 years of research, this study identified the size, scope, and structure of knowledge on hidden workers in an aging population using 2831 articles collected from the Web of Science database in January 2024. (3) Results: Indeed, the multidisciplinary nature of hidden workers goes beyond welfare and labor economics and involves issues such as health, occupational science, behavior change, policy interventions, and circles around the keyword of unemployment. Keyword co-occurrence and co-citation analysis confirm that the spectrum of research on hidden workers is being carried out distinctly within distinct disciplines across the broader aging research horizon. (4) Conclusions: The relatively scattered and uneven intellectual, conceptual, and social landscape of research on hidden workers in aging populations evidently falls short of providing concerted policy recommendations for the population group. This study provides a conceptual understanding of hidden workers in different research clusters and identifies gaps and opportunities for future research.

For the Republic of Belarus, the problem of population aging is highly relevant for the share of the elderly grows annually. The article focuses on the social-demographic characteristics and quality of life of the older generation in Belarus. The article is based on the data of the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus and the results of the sociological research “Belarus: Family, Stability of Family Relations, and Birth Rate in the Changing Social-Economic Conditions” conducted within the international research program “Generation and Gender”. The authors present a sociological-statistical approach to the analysis of the key characteristics of the elderly’s life in contemporary Belarus, which combines the information resources of sociology and statistics. The authors consider the general statistical data on the population aging and the elderly’s features and the sociological indicators revealing the perception of life at the older age. The assessment of the older generation’s life is presented as a set of indicators of the quality of life, which includes both objective statistical data and estimates of the older people’s satisfaction with various aspects of their life. For the first time in Belarus the quality of life of the 60-69- and 70-79-year-old cohorts is studied not only through statistical data but also taking into account their own assessments of various aspects of their lives, which allows to identify the most relevant issues for the social programs aimed at meeting the needs of the older generation.

Rapid population aging has significantly impacted labor supply and posed substantial challenges for the taxi industry, which have not yet been fully comprehended. Here, for the first time, we employ a large-scale dataset of taxi driver operations from China, establishing a comprehensive indicator system of taxi service performance, encompassing economic, environmental, and safety aspects. Through the application of multivariate regression models and other statistical analysis techniques, we have thoroughly investigated the mechanisms through which aging influences taxi service performance. Our research reveals that older drivers, despite exhibiting higher operational efficiency and greater inclination towards stability, underperform in time efficiency metrics, such as income per hour worked, owing to a more conservative working style. Furthermore, aging manifests negative effects on safety and environmental performance. Adjusting the driving strategies of older taxi drivers, such as regulating daily working hours and refining passenger-searching area preferences, can help mitigate these adverse impacts.

The territorial and gender differences of the transformational process in the age structure of the Ukrainian population during the 20-years’ period are analyzed in the article. The key factors and tendencies in age structure in various regions are determined. The comparative analysis of its changes among urban and country-side population is performed. The general tendency characterizing the age structure of the urban and country-side population of Ukraine is pointed out – that is the decrease in the share of the younger than active work force, and the increase in the share of the senior citizens. In the present-day structure of the urban population every fourth citizen represents the 60+ age group. The differences in the degree and intensity of aging of the rural and urban population are shown. The index of aging among urban population is much higher and makes 175,6% against 146,9% on the rural territory. The intensification of the process of demographic aging by gender is proven. In 2021, in the total number of population of Ukraine the share of men in the 60+ age group was 36,1%, while the share of women of the same age group was 63,9%. In the years 2001- 2021, the share of women at post-workable age grew to 29,5% of the total number of female population, and that of men grew to 19,3% of the total number of male population. The growth in the share of women and men at post-workable age in the urban area and its decline in the rural area are indicated. Interregional differences in the transformational process in the age structure of the Ukrainian population are defined. The smallest share of the citizens in post-workable age is observed in Volyn, Rivne, and Transcarpathean regions. The biggest share of the citizens in post-workable age is observed in Luhansk, Donetsk, Chernihiv, Sumy, Cherkasy, Zaporizhzhia, Kirovohrad, and Poltava regions. The chare of the workable age citizens is growing in 22 administrative units of Ukraine. The consequences of the transformation in the age structure of population are evaluated. The hypothesis has been proven that the age structure changes are correlated with the share of women at reproductive age, and demographic load. The decrease in the share of workable population was caused by the decrease in the share of women at reproductive age from 48,4% to 43,4%. In the years 2000 – 2021 the demographic load on the workable population grew mainly due to the older age group population (in 2021 the demographic load difference between children and the retired was 148 people). The demographic load on the workable population is 7,8% higher in the rural area than in the urban. The attention is drawn to the necessity of taking into consideration territorial peculiarities in the process of transformation in the population age structure when substantiating national programs and measures of active demographic policy. The regions of Ukraine characterized by low economic development are facing the biggest hardships in the adaptation process towards the changes of population age structure. Key words: transformation in the age structure of population, urban and rural population, demographic aging, demographic load.

With the development of e-commerce, online consumption—a new sustainable consumption mode—has rapidly developed. Online shopping has become an important consumption method for Chinese residents, and the era of online consumption has arrived. Urbanization is an important foundation for the development of online consumption, and its impact on online consumption is becoming increasingly important. In addition, with the decline of fertility in China, the proportion of the elderly population is increasing. As the macro background of the current economic operation of China, population aging has long been a concern of the government. However, the existing research on urbanization, population aging and online consumption is insufficient. In this context, this study is of great significance to promote the sustainable development of the online consumption mode and enrich the theory of resident consumption in the era of the network economy. In this paper, by adopting the system generalized method of moments (GMM), we conducted an empirical analysis of the relationship between urbanization, population aging, and online consumption, based on panel data from 31 provinces in China from 2007 to 2017. Furthermore, we examined the regional heterogeneity of urbanization’s online consumption effect. The results reveal that, first, urbanization has a positive relationship with online consumption. Second, urbanization’s online consumption effect has regional differences, with the largest positive effect being in the western area of China, the second in the eastern area of China and the smallest in the central area of China. Third, aging inhibits the development of online consumption. Specifically, it mainly includes two aspects. On the one hand, aging has a direct negative impact on online consumption. On the other hand, aging has a moderating effect on urbanization’s online consumption effect, which weakens the impact of urbanization. The rising of urban residents’ income has significant explanatory power to the change of online consumption in the eastern and western regions. Therefore, the policy implications are as follows: promoting the strategic transformation of urbanization, giving full play to the online consumption effect of urbanization; adjusting and improving population policy to cope with the population aging; constantly raising people’s income level and enhancing consumption potential.

The article presents an overview of research in the field of caring for pensioners and people with cognitive impairment in the Russian Federation at the beginning of the 21st century. The rethinking of guardianship in Russian society is shown. A review of 50 modern literary sources, journal articles from WoS and Scopus by Russian authors were studied using the methods of scientometric analysis, empirical generalization and systematization of information, 31 articles on the research topic were selected. Knowledge of the transformation of care is an actual interdisciplinary direction in anthropology. The idea of elaborating this concept based on a sample of the world communities’ population in developed and developing countries and countries with economies in transition, with different guardianship services’ coordination. In the formation of social attitudes, the social isolation of older people is clearly traced against the background of modern demographic processes, with a propensity for the aging of the world's population. The rethinking of guardianship in Russian society is shown. The problem nodes of various forms of support are tracked, the vector of their further development is determined. The differentiation of the socio-economic status of the elderly population is noted. The peculiarity of the volunteer movement during the pandemic is emphasized. The accumulated knowledge revealed the transformation of attitude towards humanization. A change in traditional types of assistance has been noted, reduction of state participation. To compensate for the current situation, the UN today is already taking steps to create favorable living conditions for the mature population in all countries.

One of the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century in most countries is the aging of the population and especially for developed countries. In Latin America and specifically in Colombia this phenomenon has been happening in an accelerated manner and in deficit economic conditions that make the phenomenon more special and can become a public health problem of great magnitude. Demographically the population groups over 50 years of age increase significantly, with those over 80 years of age being the group with the highest growth rate of the entire population. Between 2021 and 2030 The United Nations declared the Decade of Healthy Aging; a strategy that seeks to add the possible efforts in all areas of development, to improve the quality of life of the elderly and in general seek the sustainability of the entire population. In the case of human beings, the aging process must be considered differently from each individual and is related to the effects of their entire life history. “Knowing how to grow old is the masterpiece of wisdom” (Old age and life). This document brings together the most relevant aspects of how people from their young ages could make responsible actions for that older person that we all carry inside, adopting a diet with the necessary nutrients, but eating thoroughly, and identifying the main benefits of physical activity indicated by a professional, periodic and safe, establishing and strengthening family and social support networks, seeking in a programmed way their economic stability, formulating a meaningful life project that energizes existence until the end of days, exercising their mind even with the daily activities of day to day.

This paper presents a revision about the elderly population in Brazil, addressing aspects of the demographic transition as it relates to socio-economic conditions and some consequences and trends associated with policies affecting Brazil’s elderly. Since a demographic transition has been occurring as a result of the aging of the Brazilian population, we identify a majority profile of Brazilian elderly as White women who live in urban areas in couple-without-children households, and possessing on average an education of 6.1 years and a smaller than minimum wage. We show that the vast majority of the elderly in Brazil receive some form of government income transfer that have a positive effect on poverty reduction in the segment. Finally, we show that there will be some future natural consequences and trends affecting the profile of the aging population, and that adjustments will need to be made by the government in terms of health and social security spending in order to mitigate the increased demands in these areas as the country's demographic change.

The article examines the theoretical problems of reforming pension systems, taking into account the experience of developed countries. Attention is focused on the problems of population aging and increasing demographic burden on the working population. The variety of approaches to the formation of the pension insurance system is analyzed. The relevance of the inclusion of indicators of the theoretical percentage of replacement of labor income by pension and the aggregate percentage of replacement for the modeling of the three-level pension system is emphasized. The problem of pension provision for citizens is particularly relevant for Ukraine, which has been experiencing a steady depopulation of the population for the past 30 years. Under such circumstances, it is very relevant to study theoretical justifications and statistical measurements, generalize the experience of developed countries, take into account the variety of approaches and develop national priorities and directions for reforming the pension system of Ukraine. Demographic changes present pension systems with complex issues of ensuring the fairness and adequacy of pension payments, the sustainability of the systems themselves, and achieving intergenerational equality. The degree of implementation of the function of smoothing citizens' incomes after the termination of employment by various pension systems is partially characterized by the indicator of the theoretical percentage of replacement of labor income by pension (TRR). The replacement rate shows the estimated amount of the hypothetical pension of an employee with an average salary during the first year after the appointment of a pension compared to the earnings before retirement in the base case (with a 40-year career and retirement at the official retirement age). Another possible indicator of the level of pension provision — the aggregated replacement rate (ARR) — shows the ratio of the median income of persons of the retirement age group to the median income from work of the population of the pre-retirement decade. The trends of increasing the retirement age and the introduction of various savings programs to increase personal interest in pension insurance are characteristic not only of countries with a high, but also with an average and below-average level of economic development. Keywords: population aging, demographic burden, pension systems, theoretical percentage of labor income by pension replacement, aggregated percentage of replacement.

Background The growing aging population is a global phenomenon and a major public health challenge. Among Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development countries, Korea is the fastest aging country. We aimed to investigate the relationship between changes in quality of life (QOL) and cognitive function in older adults. Method: Data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging collected from 2008 to 2016 were used. In 3453 participants (men: 1943; women: 1541), QOL was measured by three aspects: general, financial, and familial. Changes in QOL status were assessed by four categories: remained poor, worsened, improved, and remained good. The level of cognitive function was measured by the Mini-Mental State Examination score (MMSE, normal range cut-off value: 24 or above). For the statistical analysis, the generalized equation model (GEE) was performed. Results: For all three aspects of QOL measured, participants whose QOL score remained poor were associated with cognitive decline that their odds ratios (OR) were statistically significant (general: OR = 1.33; familial: OR = 1.39; financial: OR = 1.40). For subgroup analysis by gender, the highest OR in men was the financial aspect of QOL (OR = 1.45); in women, the highest OR was the familial aspect of QOL (OR = 1.75). Conclusion: This study showed an association between QOL and cognitive function in a Korean elderly population. Our findings suggest that QOL measurements with a gender-specific approach can be used as a tool to detect cognitive changes in older adults and help prevent or delay cognitive decline.
