This article focuses on spatial structure of one hundred largest enterprises in the Czech Republic from evolutionary perspective. The location of large enterprise headquarters in the Czech Republic and its implications for country’s economic spatial profile and unevenly distributed economic power is discussed thoroughly. The whole analysis is pragmatically accomplished at the level of self-governmental NUTS III regions. As it is shown, intense concentration processes in the location of largest enterprise headquarters were observed during the analyzed period between 1995 and 2010. The capital city with its surroundings proved to be the winners of this process. Currently, the spatial pattern of afore mentioned head offices is basically stabilized. On the other hand, weight of large enterprises of many regions is almost negligible and subsequently, rank of individual regions can be rather volatile. Generally speaking, economic map of the Czech Republic is not entirely in compliance with country’s settlement system. Simultaneously, fundamental factors determining the location of large enterprise head offices are evaluated also from qualitative perspective. Traditional hard location factors, such as infrastructure, geographical location or agglomeration economies turned out to be decisive for location decision-making. Apart from Prague, headquarters of large enterprises tend to prefer other big towns in the country, such as Brno, Ostrava, Olomouc, Hradec Králové or Plzeň.

The contribution brings attention to the growing role of knowledge intensive services in the Society 4.0. Faculty of Economics of the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň joined forces with the Institute of Technology and Economics in České Budějovice in the project “Knowledge-intensive services sector adaptation to the conditions of Society 4.0” supported by the programme ÉTA of the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic. This contribution summarizes the research results of the completed first phase of the project: the development of two studies focused on identification, analysis and evaluation of methods and tools for knowledge intensive services adaptation and catalogue of requirements to competencies and skills to the changing jobs. Those studies were complemented by the questionnaire research among the relevant companies in Plzeň and South Bohemia regions followed by semi-structured interviews with managers of selected companies. The presented findings, observations, recommendations and feedback from business practice form the basis for the second phase of the project, which is focused on creating a methodology for adapting small and medium-sized enterprises in the services sector to the conditions of Society 4.0.

Abstract Honey, which has been used as an ancient remedy for infected wounds, has been shown in laboratory studies to have antimicrobial action against a spectrum of bacteria and fungi. Because very little quantitative information exists on the microbiota of honey, the aim of this study was to quantify the Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, and Gammaproteobacteria groups in samples of honeydew honey and blossom honey from six regions in the Czech Republic, using quantitative real-time PCR analysis with specific primers based on the 16S rRNA gene. Gammaproteobacteria and Firmicutes were clearly the most abundant, predominating Actinobacteria in both types of honey. Most of the Firmicutes were detected in samples from South Bohemia (mean gene copies per 1 g honey: 5.6 × 105) and Ústí nad Labem Region (3.7 × 105), which contained the lowest number of Gammaproteobacteria (15.5 × 103). The Actinobacteria were prevalent in samples from Plzeň (4.3 × 103) and Central Bohemia (5.4 × 103), where conversely the Firmicutes were least abundant. Honey thus contains bacterial species with probiotic activity and oligosaccharides which can act as prebiotics, suggesting that its incorporation into the human diet may potentially impart significant health benefits to consumers compared with ‘empty calories’ consumed as refined sugar.

The paper deals with spatial analysis of the shopping centers according to individual regions in Czech Republic. The centers over 10 000 m2 were identified with their total retail space and gravitational model was utilized to determine the break point between two competing regions – the point at which a person residing in an intermediate community would be likely to travel to one region rather than the other. Next part is aimed to calculation of saturation indicators. First one is coefficient of shopping centers saturation – measured like portion of retail space in all shopping centers per capita in each region (the average in Czech Republic is 0,115 m2·cap−1.; the lowest ratio was determined in South-Bohemian region – 0,033 and next is Karlovy Vary – 0,035; Hradec Králové – 0,049 and Vysočina – 0,048 regions; the highest ratio was determined in Liberec region – 0,275 and next is Central-Bohemian including Prague – 0,253; South-Moravian – 0,182 and Plzen – 0,157 regions). The second one is index of retail saturation – the population of the region is multiplied by the monthly expenditure on the goods and services the retailer wants to sell in shopping centers and this is divided by the total retail space in all shopping centers in the given region (the average in Czech Republic is 77 094,77 CZK·(m2)−1; the same rank was determined – the highest index in South-Bohemian region – 175 909 and the lowest index in Liberec region – 20 224). The main result is comparison of regions according to their shopping centers saturation and recommendation to possible investors, developers and retailers where is the best site to invest and build a new complex of retail stores according to given indicators of spatial analysis.

The paper deals with the problems of the occurrence of aggression and aggressive behavior as a provoking cause of various injuries and the need to provide pre-hospital emergency care. Based on the analysis of professional literature, as well as on the basis of experience from practice, it can be stated that members of Emergency Rescue Service exit groups often encounter manifestations of aggression and aggressiveness when providing pre-hospital emergency care. The results of a retrospective observational study of the medical records of the Plzeň and Ústí regions in the Czech Republic are presented. We focused on the analysis and in-depth examination of the calls of ambulance groups to patients whose injuries were caused by aggression and aggressive behavior. This was in terms of the number of call-outs, the frequency of individual diagnoses, NASA score and urgency level, as well as the characteristics of the deployment of individual call-out groups, etc. Options for managing aggression and aggressive behavior are also presented, including an assessment of the potential risk of aggression and escalation. Attention is also paid to the issue of preparing the members of call groups to cope with this negative phenomenon, which has an increasing tendency in the conditions of providing pre-hospital emergency care. The paper deals with this issue comprehensively.

Abstract Parasite prevalence was investigated in giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) housed in six major Czech zoological gardens: Zoo Ostrava, Zoo Dvůr Králové nad Labem, Zoo Liberec, Zoo Olomouc, Zoo Praha, and Zoo Plzeň. In autumn 2012 and in spring 2013, 120 faecal samples from 21 animals were examined using the McMaster egg counting technique. Propagative stages of three parasite groups were discovered, namely eggs of the nematodes of the order Strongylida (prevalence 25.8%), whipworms Trichuris spp. (prevalence 25%), and oocysts of the unicellular coccidia of the genus Eimeria (prevalence 1.7%). The results indicate that captive giraffes in the Czech zoos are not substantially affected by parasitic infection.

The Prague and Ústí nad Labem Zoos finished its keeping at the beginning of the 21th century due to technical reasons; Dvůr Králové, Jihlava, Olomouc and Plzeň Zoos continued. The respective zoos maintained altogether 75 individuals, 24 were imported and 51 were born. The births were registered in the period 1986–2017: 24 in Dvůr Králové, ten in Ústí nad Labem, seven in Olomouc, five in Jihlava, four in Prague and one in Plzeň. The earliest births were documented in two females which both delivered at the age of 5 years and 8 months. Both these females also showed the highest number of young documented in the Czech zoos (nine each). The births occurred especially in autumn and early spring seasons. The shortest period between two subsequent births in the same female was 1 year, 2 months, 25 days. The sex ratio of the young was 18 : 33 (♂:♀). Of the 51 juveniles, eight (6 ♂♂ : 2 ♀♀) died on the day of birth, four (2 : 2) during the first week and three (0 : 3) within the first half of the first year. The longest age, almost 38 years, was reached by a female from the Dvůr Králové Zoo.

The report deals with an analysis of the questionnaire inquiry results about Internal tourism in the Czech Republic in 2005 from the Czech Statistical Office sources. Besides basic information about the tourist trade statistics and terminology questions the core of this publication is the analysis of the Internal tourism in the NUTS II South-East region and both its parts (South Moravian region and Vysocina region) and its comparison with the Czech Republic. Authors tries to create a visitors background from the point of view of visit seasonality, a region from which he comes, an age, a travel purpose, a travel duration, an accommodation type, travel expenses and a conveyance used. Indicators were selected, in which the region visitors differ in comparison with the entire Czech Republic, eventually in which the visitors of South Moravian region differ from the Vysocina region visitors. At the conclusion authors speculate about the conditions of regional localization of the tourist trade satellite account in the Czech Republic.

Macro-economic aspects and further factors influence the economic development of a region. Two new indicators (Index of Citizens' Financial Provision and Risk of Regional Economic Development) are introduced in this paper. These indicators enable people to evaluate the financial provision of citizens and the economic risk of a region in more detail. To demonstrate a function of these new indicators in economic practice, the authors focus on the selected region (Vysocina, Czech Republic) due to the following specific characteristics. Economic performance of the Vysocina Region in comparison with other regions of the Czech Republic is below the average. When calculating GDP per capita the Vysocina Region ranks eleventh position from fourteen regions in the Czech Republic. The input data for examples given in this paper are based from the Czech Statistical Office. Mathematical modeling of the new developed indicators has been created in Microsoft Excel program. To design Indicator Risk of Regional Economic Development the fuzzy sets logic has been used.

Abstract This study evaluates occurrence of the heavy rains at urban areas on the example of Brno agglomeration. Extreme precipitation events are studied with the help of 1-minute records from three urban sites in the Brno and one site in the rural region. Additionally data from nine Hellmann rain gauges from Brno and surroundings were used. The event of torrential rains was evaluated according to Wussow’s method. The study found that torrential rains occurred in Brno in the season from April to November. The fifteen-year long observation of the phenomenon at Brno-Žabovřesky station shows varying frequency of torrential rainfall - from none in 2007 to four in 2004 and 2010. The most extremal was catastrophic downpour on July 15, 2009 when precipitation sum reached total up to 42.7 mm in 52 minutes and the maximal rainfall intensity was 4.1 mm/min. This phenomenon occurs only one day after downpour on July 14, 2009. The overall number of torrential episodes is not very high, but it is compensated by the fact that they can repeat in a relatively short period of time, due to specific synoptic conditions. Maximum rainfall intensity during torrential rains reaches values of about 3 mm / min and the average proportion of torrential rain in the daily precipitation sum is around 70%. The phenomenon of heavy rains represents a significant problem for densely populated urban areas because such extreme rainfall has a large impact on the hydrological system of cities.

In the years 2012–2014 the authors carried out an extensive marketing research among users of wood-based buildings in the Czech Republic. The questionnaire survey had 1,000 respondents – Czech households using a wood-based house. The survey was conducted separately in each region of the Czech Republic (40–100 questionnaires per region). The results were evaluated separately for each region and for the Czech Republic as a whole. Questionnaires consisted of four thematic groups of questions. This paper deals with processing and evaluation of results of the first group of questions. This group addresses characteristics of people using wood-based family houses. The results are evaluated for individual regions and for the whole Czech Republic. The evaluation covers seven characteristics of adults using the surveyed buildings: age of users, type of the buildings’ ownership, educational attainment, sector of employment, profession, type of previous housing, and the size of municipality of the previous housing. The aim of the paper is to create profile of a “common user” of wood-based buildings. The results of the marketing research can be used to enhance competitiveness of companies in the woodworking and construction sector.

Abstract The paper presents the results of floristic and vegetation analyses of the landfill Supíkovice. Ruderal, segetal and meadow vegetation units were recorded in June 2015. The most interesting findings were threatened weed species growing in decontamination patches on loamy and nutrient-poor soils in the central part of the landfill. Dianthus armeria (C4a) and Filago arvensis (C3) are listed in the national Red List of the Czech Republic. Moreover, these taxa were evaluated in the same category of rarity on the regional level. Apart from the above mentioned, Centaurea cyanus (C4a) and Papaver dubium (C4a), registered only in the regional Red List of vascular plants of the Moravian-Silesian Region (see methods), were found. Besides threatened species, relatively small populations of invasive taxa as Erigeron annuus, Impatiens parviflora or Reynoutria sp., were also recorded on the landfill Supíkovice.

Abstract The research question is the relationship between the local community and globalization tendencies and transformation or maintenance of local traditions. The research area is a specific locality of a Czech village in Romanian Banat. The local community has evolved in a relative isolation. Agriculture was the most important activity despite the fact that a mining factory was opened there. Agriculture was and in many features still is traditional, self-supplying, and hard-work. The life-style has always been environmentally friendly as it has been without modern technologies. Nevertheless, modernization exploded dramatically in these villages after 1989, when the communist policies collapsed along with Romania's isolation. People from the Czech Republic have rediscovered Romanian Banat and a rather busy (agro) tourism has developed there. The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs supports development projects for making living conditions in the village better. Simultaneously, strong migration from Banat to the Czech Republic has started. People find living conditions in the Czech Republic easier and leave hard work, poverty and unemployment. It brings huge land cover changes because people who remain cannot use all arable land, which is thus abandoned and left for the natural process. One of the distinct manifestations of globalization tendencies is the build-up of wind power plants.

Several authors have investigated the frequency of football injuries in youth players. However, the results of these studies are inconsistent because of the different age groups investigated and the different methods applied. The aim of the present study was to compare the incidence and characteristics of football injuries in youth players of two European regions. A total of 444 youth players from the Czech Republic and the Alsace region of France and Germany were followed weekly for 1 year. In 311 players (70%), complete weekly follow-ups over the 1-year period were available. The comparison of injury data revealed no substantial differences between players from the Alsace region and the Czech Republic in injury incidence per 1000 hours of exposure, degree of injury severity, or the circumstances in which the injuries occurred. However, players from the Czech Republic spent more time in training and playing football than did players from the Alsace region, and in the Czech Republic a higher proportion of injuries was caused by foul play. With only a few exceptions, the statistics were similar in the amount of football played as well as in the incidence of injury between different age and skill levels in both European regions.

Abstract There are not many European countries with such a significant share of the capital city on tourism (especially incoming tourism) as the Czech Republic. The number of foreign tourists grows significantly in the Czech Republic and so does the share of Prague. All marketing campaigns aiming to get foreign tourists beyond Prague ended inefficiently. The share of Prague on the number of tourists accommodated in standard accommodation facilities per the total number of tourists in the Czech Republic is 62%. Prague is also the only region with a higher number of foreign tourists in comparison with the number of the Czech tourists (85% of tourists in Prague are foreigners). Furthermore, the offer of sharing economy in the field of accommodation in Prague also exceeds the offer of other Czech cities. Prague is therefore struggling with overtourism in some attractive areas and must deal with unsustainable development.

There are not many European countries with such a significant share of the capital city on tourism (especially incoming tourism) as the Czech Republic. The number of foreign tourists grows significantly in the Czech Republic, and so does the share of Prague. All marketing campaigns aiming to get foreign tourists beyond Prague ended inefficient. The share of Prague on the number of tourists accommodated in standard accommodation facilities on the total number of tourists in the Czech Republic (CZ) is 62%. Prague is also the only region with a higher number of foreign tourists than Czech tourists (85% of tourists in Prague are foreigners). Prague is therefore struggling with overtourism in some attractive areas and must deal with unsustainable development.

AbstractCross-border cooperation is one of the development opportunities of border regions. Cross-border cooperation (CBC) along the Slovakia-Czech border is specific. It is due to several factors like common history under one state formation, historical ties and similarity of language and culture. Cooperation was realised also in the past. CBC got new forms and intensity after the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia in two independent states - Czech Republic and Slovak Republic and the possibility to draw support from EU instruments for cross-border cooperation in the pre-accession (after 2003) and the programming periods 2004-2006 and 2007-2013. The aim of this contribution is to highlight the implementation status and opportunities of Operational Programme Cross-Border Cooperation Slovak Republic - Czech Republic 2007-2013 (OP CBC SK-CZ 2007-2013) and at a lower administrative level to evaluate the potential of local governments of the Trenčín Self-Governing Region (TSR) and three border self-governing regions (Trnava, Trenčín, Žilina) for involvement in cross-border cooperation. In the current programming period of 2007- 2013, cross-border cooperation is implemented also in the Slovakia-Czech border region under the OP CBC SK-CZ 2007-2013. Research pointed to a lower intensity of drawing funds on OP CBC SK-CZ 2007-2013. The main reasons are the lack of experience of local governments with grant applications, project implementation and difficult project administration. The problem is also long term of verification of the financial costs of the project activities what gets municipalities into trouble with co-financing of projects. It caused that municipalities have low interest to apply for new projects.

The article examines one of the directions of the foreign policy of the Czech Republic - the Balkan one. Based on the analysis of government documents on foreign policy, it is noted that this vector cannot be considered a priority. Nevertheless, the development of the situation in the Balkans is of considerable interest in Czech society. The main topic discussed in the article is the integration of the Balkan states into the European Union. The article reveals the connection between the foreign policy strategy of the Czech Republic and the current state of the Czech political scene, where the discussion on the recognition of Kosovo's independence plays a significant role. In connection with the active use of the «southern Balkan route» by migrants, certain problems of the migration policy of the Czech Republic are considered in the context of the fight against illegal migration. The main research method is content analysis of foreign policy documents of the Czech government and speeches of Czech politicians. The author concludes that the Czech Republic actively supports the process of European integration of the Balkan states, considering it an indispensable condition for the stable economic and political development of all countries in the region and a guarantee of the preservation of peace and security in Europe as a whole.

Land market in the Czech Republic is monitored by the Research Institute of Agricultural Economics on the sample of 24 districts (1/3 of the CR). Land prices depend on the area, culture and region of the plot. Sales of small plots (up to 1 ha) prevail. These plots are usually purchased for non-agricultural use and their prices are many times higher than prices of large plots (above 5 ha) which are usually bought for agricultural purpose. Land market is not well developed, only 0.2–0.4% of the monitored area is sold each year. But in the last years, it is increasing. Compared with land prices in the west EU countries, land market prices in the CR are low.

AbstractThere is little doubt in the current comparative politics literature about the importance of political parties in modern democracies, nor is there any doubt about the centrality of political parties in the democratic transitions in Central and Eastern Europe after the fall of communism. This holds true for the Czech Republic as well. However, the three most recent general elections in the Czech Republic have shaken the country. Electoral earthquakes are becoming common in the region, and it seems that the Czech Republic is being affected by what has been described in the literature as the decline of political parties. The main aim of the article is to explore sources of public anti-party sentiment in the Czech Republic. The analysis of data from a public opinion survey shows that public anti-partyism can be explained by a perceived lack of political representation that stems from both economic conditions and a feeling of low political efficacy.

This paper summarizes data about the distribution of freshwater molluscs in the Vysočina Region (6,800 km²). The region is one of the 14 regions of the Czech Republic, situated in its central part. The major part of this region consists of Českomoravská vrchovina (Bohemian-Moravian Highlands) with average elevation about 500 m a. s. l. Data about freshwater molluscs have been obtained by author’s field research since 1993 and from many published and unpublished papers, private collections, and collections in museums dating from 1850. Altogether, data about the occurrence of 49 species of freshwater molluscs (27 gastropods, 22 bivalves) were obtained. This number constitutes 62% of all aquatic mollusc species found in the Czech Republic. Data about the occurrence of individual species were used for the construction of distributional maps of records for three time periods (1851–1950, 1951–2000, 2001–2016). The major part of the data has originated for the last period. This clearly demonstrates a significant increase in the research intensity after 2000. The most common species, i.e. recorded at least in 40 mapping cells out of 72 covering the area to the Vysočina Region, were Galba truncatula, Radix auricularia, R. labiata, Lymnaea stagnalis, Gyraulus albus, Ancylus fluviatilis, Anodonta anatina, Pisidium casertanum, and P. subtruncatum. In contrast, Viviparus viviparus, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, Stagnicola corvus, Radix ampla, R. balthica, Planorbis planorbis, Gyraulus acronicus, Ferrissia fragilis, Unio tumidus, Pseudanodonta complanata, Sinanodonta woodiana, Pisidium amnicum, P. tenuilineatum, and Dreissena polymorpha have been found in less than five mapping cells and belong to rare species of this region. Except 29 common and widespread species, four species (Bythinella austriaca, Physa fontinalis, Pisidium milium, and P. supinum) belonging in the Red List of the Molluscs of the Czech Republic were recorded. Other six species are classified as Vulnerable (Radix ampla, Gyraulus acronicus, Segmentina nitida, Unio tumidus, Anodonta cygnea, and Pisidium hibernicum), three as Endangered (Unio crassus, Pseudanodonta complanata, and Pisidium amnicum), and two as Critically Endangered (Margaritifera margaritifera and Pisidium tenuilineatum).

Abstract The article deals with the recent positive changes in the industrial landscape of the Karviná region in a broader context. The Karviná region has been the most important part of the coal-bearing Ostrava-Karviná District. Since the industrial revolution, the position of the primary mining area has brought a dynamic economic development and a great concentration of population into the fast-growing conurbation cities, particularly between 1950s and 1980s. However, the dominant coal mining and processing has had a negative impact on the environment, the character and utilization of the landscape. Many environmental, socioeconomic and other problems did not become fully evident until the social changes at the turn of 1980s and 1990s. At present, a great attention is being paid to the reclamation of the affected landscape. As a result, the region is starting to change its unflattering image of an industrial and problematic area devastated by coal extraction for the better after many years. The various forms of land reclamation, modification of water bodies, construction of new sports and recreational facilities and so on are bringing a gradual improvement of the environment in the region, creating a new cultivated landscape that can be used, among other things, for various forms of tourism and relaxation.

Ruzrok, the first sorghum cultivar of Czech provenance, was selected as a multiline cultivar from sorghum collected in the Bílé Karpaty region in Moravia, Czech Republic. In the present paper, basic plant morphological and yield-related characteristics as well as characteristics related to plant resistance to major abiotic and biotic stress factors are described. The major advantages of Ruzrok consists in its earliness, plant height and high growth rate of plants leading to high biomass production. Ruzrok was registered for its high biomass yield; however, its grains can also be used for flour production and food purposes after the technological removal of tannin-rich outer layers of grains. Recommendations for basic cultural practices such as sowing date, fertilization and protection against pests and diseases are given. In conclusion, potential utilization of the novel sorghum variety as both biomass and fodder crop is discussed.

This study focused on differences in the monitored quality indicators of roe deer venison depending on the region of the Czech Republic where roe deer are hunted. Quality of roe deer venison was evaluated based on pH values, colour (CIEL*a*b* system) and chemical composition (content of haem pigments, dry matter, pure protein, collagen and fat). Samples of muscle from the leg (m. gluteus medius) were taken from 22 female roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) from two hunting regions (Liberec and South Moravia) in the Czech Republic. In roe deer from Liberec, higher pH value (5.65, P < 0.001) was found; muscles were darker (L* = 36.03), contained higher redness (a* = 14.41, P < 0.001) and yellowness values (b* = 12.10) and higher chroma (C* = 18.86). In roe deer from South Moravia, higher (P < 0.05) hue (h°) values, and higher level of haem pigments (2.45 mg·g-1) were found. Muscles from roe deer from South Moravia contained higher amounts of dry matter (29.52%, P < 0.001), pure protein (23.84%, P < 0.001) and total collagen (0.86%), and lower amounts of intramuscular fat (0.48%). These results may provide an important source of information for consumers of roe deer meat because several differences in the quality (chemical composition) of muscles from South Moravian region and Liberec region were found. Presumably, the differences between muscles from animals living in two different Czech regions were due to the diet, form of land use (more agricultural land in Southern Moravia, and forests and mountains in Liberec) and climatic conditions (Liberec lies in the northern part of the Czech Republic). It is the first study of this topic in the Czech Republic.

Geographic farness, weak economic contacts did not contribute to the expansion of bilateral cooperation between the parties. The author emphasizes that the Czech Republic from the very beginning has been supporting Georgia’s territorial integrity, standing for official Tbilisi in its conflict with Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This topic has not found wide coverage in modern scientific literature, so the present research has significant practical importance. The article outlines the current situation in the South Caucasus, the policy of the European Union in the region and Georgia’s integration into the world economic and political space. In 2008, the EU and its individual members intensified their policy in the field of expanding cooperation with the states of the South Caucasus, including Georgia, which has significantly advanced towards building a civil society. The Czech Republic, taking an interest in the uninterrupted supply of energy resources through the territory of Georgia, seeks to stabilize the situation inside the country and on its external borders. The author concludes that relations between the Czech Republic and Georgia are developing not only within the framework of expanding contacts between the EU and Tbilisi. The Czech Republic is becoming one of the leading European investors to Georgia, especially in energy, agriculture and tourism. The Czech Republic contributes to strengthening of the institutions of civil society in Georgia.

Abstract The aim of the paper was to identify areas of possible abuse of social security support in the Czech Republic, with a specific focus on the Ústí nad Labem Region and the Litoměřice district, and to estimate the volume of social security support drawn in conflict with the legal regulations of the Czech Republic. In the Ústí nad Labem Region, spending on social security increased by 34.9% in the years 2016–2020. Upon a detailed focus on the Litoměřice district in the monitored period of 2018–2020, there were 69 fraud cases in the Litoměřice district within the scope of the social security system and illness benefit. Over 60% of this fraud and loss was deferred. The biggest shortcoming of the Czech Republic’s social system is the fact that individual institutions have little or no chance of finding out whether applicants are entering truthful information in the forms. A change of legal regulations and mandatory checks on applicants is the path towards reducing the amount of fraud and loss in social security and illness benefit.

Based on the results of the empirical research, according to optimal scaling the ASEB-C analysis is applied suggesting the LAC (Limits of Acceptable Change) planning system will improve sustainability and competitiveness of all LAU 1 (in the Liberec region) and of the specific touristic destinations. The potential of development in the Czech border areas is in the stagnation phase, due to the fear and (dis)embedded identity in some less developed border areas. It should be evident that even in the Czech rural border areas the potential of “growth of endogenous potentials seems feasible” in combination with an endogenous and exogenous model of regional rural development.

Further, an introduction to the historical discourse of events in the political and social spheres in the Czechoslovak Republic after the Second World War is carried out. Attention is drawn to the process of division of the Czech and Slovak Republics in the first half of the 90s. The article tells about the choice by the Czech Republic of the political and social vector for «returning to Europe». Other problems of the Czech Republic on the path of European integration are analyzed, among which one can note the conflict with the Federal Republic of Germany over the forced eviction of the German population from the country in the post-war period, based on the decrees of the President of the Czech Republic Edward Benesh, as well as the solution of this problem through diplomatic means. Attention is also drawn to another problem, which was expressed in the conflict with the government of the Austrian Republic regarding the construction of the Temelin nuclear power plant in the South Bohemian region, in the immediate vicinity of the Austrian borders. The Melk Protocol was analyzed, on the basis of which this conflict was resolved. The general conclusions on this work are summarized, in which the success of the Czech strategy for European and Euro-Atlantic integration is stated. Abstract. Barley production in Russia and, in particular, in the Rostov region, is of great economic importance. There are positive and negative cultivation feature of the crop in this region. Spring barley has occupied its niche in production here, and in recent years the interest of breeders has been turned to its hulles forms. In order to develop a new promising breeding material, it is necessary to study comprehensively a various source material, including its responsiveness to diseases. The purpose of the current study was an immunological estimation of the world collection of hulles barley, provided by the N. I. Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources (VIR), according to resistance to the main pathogens widely spread in the Rostov region. The applied methods have included observations under conditions of an artificial infectious background, which revealed the immunological response of the varieties to the studied diseases. The created provocative conditions reduced the time of manifestation of susceptibility, and made it possible to cull the studied material at the early stages of the breeding process. The estimation was carried out for resistance to both leaf diseases (powdery mildew and net blotch) and smuts (head and loose). The study was carried out in the period from 2016 to 2018. There were evaluated 95 samples of various ecological and geographical origin. The result of the conducted study was as follows: according to powdery mildew there have been recommended such varieties as 84469/70 (Czech Republic), 1057-1923 (Czech Republic), Orgeniepetite (France) and Yudinsky 1 (Russian Federation). According to barley net blotch resistance, there have been recommended such varieties as 84469/70 (Czech Republic), Mestny (Dagestan), CDC Dawn (Canada) and NB-owa (Nepal). According to head smut resistance, there have been recommended such varieties as CDC Dawn (Canada), CDC Buck (Canada), H 235/66 and 84469/70 (Czech Republic). It focuses on the evaluation of concentrations of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and suspended particles of PM10 depending on meteorological conditions, especially wind direction. The whole area of interest is heavily affected with air pollution of BaP and PM10. Limits of BaP and PM10 are still exceeded. Annual concentrations of benzo[a]pyrene are even several times higher than the value of its annual limit. The elaboration follows the results of the Czech–Polish project “Air Silesia”, which dealt with air pollution and the transboundary transport of pollutants in this area and took place in 2010 to 2013. Within this project, a higher transport of pollutants from Poland to the Czech Republic was established. The evaluation of the dependences of PM10 concentrations is based on hourly and daily data of PM10 and hourly data of meteorological quantities. To assess the dependences of daily BaP and PM10 concentrations, a methodology for evaluating daily types of wind direction was implemented into the processing. The results confirm that the problem of above-limit concentrations of BaP and PM10 in the Moravian-Silesian Region in the Czech Republic and the Silesian Voivodeship in Poland remains. The article confirms there is a higher transport of PM10 concentrations from Poland to the Czech Republic in the area of interest. Higher transport in the same direction is also predicted for daily concentrations of benzo[a]pyrene, although this cannot be clearly confirmed due to the lack of more detailed and identifiable data.

The article analyzes the situation of research problems of formation and development of foreign policy of the Czech Republic in the works of Ukrainian and foreign researchers. The scientific problem attracts considerable interest of specialists in the field of international relations, because it is relevant and unstable. The article summarizes the new material on the research topic of historiography. The purpose of this article is to analyze the state of development of our research in domestic and foreign historiography. To achieve this goal, the author considered the bulk of the scientific literature on the foreign policy of the sovereign Czech Republic. For the objective disclosure of the topic by the author, the literature was distributed according to the problem principle. The development of international relations of the CEE countries in the post-communist period and the Czech Republic, in particular, was covered in many scientific and popular science works. Among foreign researchers, the author singles out mainly Czech, Slovak, German and British. Such an ethno-geographical number of scientists is due to the specifics of the geopolitical location of the Czech Republic. Ukrainian researchers were viewed through the prism of domestic foreign policy. The article presents an analysis of scientific research in the field of the following issues: general transformational transformations in the CEE region, formation of the sovereign Czech Republic and national policy, experience of integration into the European Union and NATO, Visegrad cooperation, development of Czech-Slovak relations and formation of Ukrainian-Czech interstate cooperation. To fully and comprehensively cover the research problem, the author used a significant amount of material from periodicals in Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Germany. A review of the works used by domestic and foreign researcher’s shows that the vast majority of publications raise general questions about the course of domestic political transformation processes in the field of political science, economic or cultural research.

We describe the first case of chancroid seen in the Czech Republic, diagnosed in a 40-year-old heterosexual HIV-positive man. Despite genital localization of the ulcer, the transmission of Haemophilus ducreyi infection in our patient remains unclear, as he denied having sexual intercourse and he did not travel outside the Czech Republic for several months before the ulcer appeared. The correct diagnosis has been revealed by a multiplex nucleic acid amplification test. Physicians in countries in the eastern and central Europe region should be aware that chancroid can occur in their patients.

AbstractThe aim of the paper is to draw attention to consequences of the transfer of competency at the level of the building procedure from state authorities to municipal offices in the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic. The defined research objective was achieved firstly by conducting controlled interviews with representatives of the building offices in the Nitra Region and, secondly, by analysis of financing of this competency from the obtained data from publicly available sources in both states. Secondly, the paper includes a comparison of the financial management of the transferred competencies at the level of the building procedure between the Nitra Region (Slovakia) and the Pardubice Region (Czech Republic). By conducting controlled interviews in the Nitra Region, we came to the conclusion of the financial under-dimensioning of this competency. By comparing the amount of state subsidies provided for the building procedure in both regions, significant differences were found. Based on our research findings, we recommend reassessing the state subsidies for the transferred competency in the field of building procedure.

Introduction. Europe is the region with the greatest proportion of deaths (16%) attributable to tobacco smoking worldwide. Medical students and physicians should set an example of tobacco-smoking abstinence for their patients. Aim. The aim of the study was to compare opinions on behaviors and attitudes of Czech and Polish medical students about tobacco smoking and the position of a physician in anti-smoking counseling. Material and methods. The Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS) was conducted among 707 medical students in Czech Republic in 2011 and among 1164 medical students in Poland. Results. Twety percent of polish and 25,7% of Czech medical students declared current tobacco smoking. Eighty-one percent in Poland and 60% in Czech Republic felt that physicians should be trained in smoking cessation techniques but only 27% of the medical students in Poland and 2,8% in Czech Republic , declared that such a course had been realized during the course of their education. Conclusion. Over a fifth of Polish students and a quarter of Czech students declared themselves as active smokers. It is worrying that about half of Polish students were exposed to environmental tobacco smoke, while only one-fifth of Czech students declared such exposure. Polish and Czech students agreed that the doctor will play an important role in the patient’s smoking cessation process and that physicians should give advice on quitting smoking.
