Purpose Innovations are vital tasks for modern two-sided platforms to grow and avoid defunct. How these two-sided platforms innovate to impact platform performance remains virtually unexplored in literature. The purpose of this paper is to classify two types of platform innovations – same-side and cross-side – and to hypothesize that their performance is contingent on platform monetization type, growth rate and user acquisition and retention costs. Design/methodology/approach The authors collected news announcements of 177 same-side producer-to-producer (P-P), 216 same-side consumer-to-consumer (C-C) and 284 cross-side producer-to-consumer (P-C) innovations from 30 two-sided platforms and used event study and econometric techniques in data analysis. Findings The findings reveal that same-side innovations cannot sufficiently lead to an impact on platform performance, while cross-side innovations are always beneficial. Same-side P-P innovations can affect platform performance positively on consumer-monetized platforms, whereas same-side C-C innovations can only do so on producer-monetized platforms. Besides, when platforms grow rapidly (slowly), cross-side (same-side) innovations strengthen platform performance. On platforms that are subject to higher (lower) user acquisition and retention costs, only same-side (cross-side) innovations can enhance platform performance. Practical implications This study provides actionable insights for platform practitioners to implement proper strategies to manage same-side and cross-side innovations based on the three platform attributes of platform monetization type, growth rate and user acquisition and retention costs. Originality/value This study offers the first systematic and empirical investigation of two-sided platform innovations by classifying them as same-side innovations for building capability in managing users and cross-side innovations for establishing capability in managing exchange, which are the two core capabilities for two-sided platforms to avoid defunct. This study further provides a contingency framework that is unique to the two-sided platform setting to study the performance impact of these innovations.

Digitalization is creating a new model of industrial organization as online platform intermediate in multisided markets. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how the platform paradigm provides a simple and useful framework to analyze the impact of digitalization on network industries. The first online platforms (searches and social platforms) disrupted content industries (music, newspapers, media, etc.) but as platforms proliferate, they are also disrupting industries with physical assets, such as accommodation. Disruption has reached network industries, and similar features emerge as they are all being “platformed.” On the one hand, platform-based services are replacing traditional network industry services. This is the case of electronic mail and postal service and carpooling platforms and railways. On the other hand, platforms are commoditizing network industry services, as they become mere sides in multisided markets coordinated by a platform. This is the case of telecom services and over the top providers (WhatsApp, Skype, and YouTube) and, potentially, of isolated transport services and “Mobility-as-a-Service” platforms. Regulation is becoming a key consideration. First, there is a debate on whether platforms should be subject to the same regulatory obligations as traditional network players. Second, there is a debate on whether platforms should have access to network services under regulated terms. Overall, platforms are replacing former monopolists in the central role as coordinators of the sector.

The bilateral trading platform is an intermediary system which serves both consumers and suppliers. To make this happen, platforms must attract users on board from both sides and make them trade with each other. Spatial distribution of suppliers has the significant impact on consumers platform adoption decision, but how does the supplier’s network affect the platform competition has rarely been studied. In this paper, the supplier’s spatial network is added to bilateral trading platform network effect model, and influences of the supplier’s network structure on the platform competition are discussed. Simulation results show that, compared with the central network, the decentralized network is more conducive to the platform competition. When suppliers on two competitive platforms follow the same network structure, the reinforcement effect of the first-mover advantage on platforms will vanish. This result is robust in different spatial network patterns. Conversely, when one of the platforms has a superior network structure of suppliers, its first-mover advantage will get strengthened, and it will achieve a better competition result; otherwise, its first-mover advantage will get weakened. These results provide an insight into the platform competition mechanism and will help platforms to make corresponding competitive strategies.

A major result in the study of two-sided platforms is the strategic interdependence between the two sides of the same platform, leading to the implication that a platform can maximize its total profits by subsidizing one of its sides. We show that this result largely depends on assuming that at least one side of the market single-homes. As technology makes joining multiple platforms easier, we increasingly observe that participants on both sides of two-sided platforms multihome. The case of multihoming on both sides is mostly ignored in the literature on competition between two-sided platforms. We help to fill this gap by developing a model for platform competition in a differentiated setting (a Hotelling line), which is similar to other models in the literature but focuses on the case where at least some agents on each side multihome. We show that when both sides in a platform market multihome, the strategic interdependence between the two sides of the same platform will diminish or even disappear. Our analysis suggests that the common strategic advice to subsidize one side in order to maximize total profits may be limited or even incorrect when both sides multihome, which is an important caveat given the increasing prevalence of multihoming in platform markets. Using E-learning platforms in learning process have become a common phenomenon because of the large use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in all fields. Many e-learning platforms were developed what makes their list richer and bigger. Most of teachers have the possibility to choose the suitable platform for their needs. Consequently, we may find more than one platform used in the same institution, and thus students have to connect independently on each system. This diversity in use of platforms makes the learning process for students more difficult which discourage them to be involved in e-learning process. In this paper, we propose a new architecture to solve this problem and to manage cooperation between platforms used in the same institution.

In RBUI method, platform with higher risk level will need inspection done more intensively than those with lower risk level. However, the probability of failure (PoF) evaluation in RBUI method is usually carried out in semi quantitative way by comparing failure parameters associated with the same damage mechanism between a group of platforms located in the same area. Therefore, RBUI will not be effective for platforms spread in distant areas where failure parameter associated with the same damage mechanism may not be the same. The existing standard, American Petroleum Institute, Recommended Practice for Structural Integrity Management of Fixed Offshore Structures (API RP-2SIM), is limited on the general instructions in determining the risk value of a platform, yet it does not provide a detail instruction on how determining the Probability of Failure (PoF) of platform. In this paper, the PoF is determined quantitatively by calculating structural reliability index based on structural collapse failure mode, thus the method in determining the inspection schedule is called Risk-Reliability Based Underwater Inspection (RReBUI). Models of 3-legs jacket fixed offshore platform in Java Sea and 4-legs jacket fixed offshore platform in Natuna Sea are used to study the implementation of RReBUI.

There is a trend toward increased customization of goods to satisfy a wide range of customers using product platforms. However, there is an erroneous notion that product platforms can only be used to provide economic viability in production thanks to the reuse of physical components among a family of products. Yet, this is a limited perception of the potential of a product platform. In this article, an object-oriented approach to support the development of product platforms is proposed to increase efficiency through reuse and flexibility of designs among a family of products. Two modes of the platform development process are addressed: platform preparation and platform execution. Platform preparation prescribes the methods needed to model platform objects, using enhanced function-means models and set-based concurrent engineering processes. During the platform execution process, sets of design alternatives can be configured concurrently throughout the conceptual, system, and detailed phases of the platform development. Three cases illustrate how the same approach may be used in different design scenarios: design space exploration and extension, supply-chain collaboration, and configure-to-order. The approach supports system architects and design engineers in making design decisions that propel the platform development work by enabling analysis in stages where designs are immature and evaluating the goodness of the alternatives early. Ultimately, product platforms can be efficiently developed for modularity and scalability to find feasible product variants and meet the needs of a multitude of customers.

AbstractBrands allocate their social media advertising across multiple platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Because consumers use multiple social media, brand communications on one platform could generate engagement within the same platform (direct effects) and potentially impact engagement with the brand on the other platforms (spillover effects). Additionally, past engagement with a post on a platform could sustain into the future, thereby improving the longevity of posts (carryover effects). These effects could also vary across platforms. Drawing on recent advertising literature, the authors propose and test differential carryover, spillover, and direct effects within and across social media. The empirical analysis indicates that these effects exist and are significant, supporting the propositions presented. The analysis provides generalizable guidelines to social media marketers on the effectiveness of the various platforms at sustaining a post and at creating direct and spillover effects across other platforms. Finally, the study also exemplifies a resource allocation model for brands to use when allocating their efforts across the various social media platforms to maximize both consumer engagement and the firm’s return on social media investment.

Purpose In mobile platforms, an increasing number of third-party developers (developers) create new ideas and enhance their expertise through knowledge sharing on the developers’ community. Notwithstanding the importance of the sharing and its uniqueness on the mobile platform contexts, the motivational factors of sharing their knowledge on the community have been underinvestigated. Therefore, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive framework to enhance the knowledge sharing in the mobile platform context. Design/methodology/approach Based on the theory of reasoned action, this paper incorporated intrinsic and internalized extrinsic motivations with two unique features of platform environments: platform open policies and coopetitive relationships. To test, an online survey was distributed to four developer communities in Korea, two Android and two iOS communities. Findings The results show that a platform pursuing higher openness causes the developers to find higher social pressure for information sharing. The coopetitive relationship with other developers in the same platform takes dissimilar roles; reciprocity significantly increases subjective norm, while rivalry does attitude. Self-efficacy and self-development stimulate knowledge sharing. Furthermore, multilevel analysis to capture the difference between two leading mobile platforms indicates no path difference but, interestingly, shows significant mean difference between the two platforms regarding perceived openness and rivalry. Originality/value With this paper, the authors fulfill the need to understand the knowledge-sharing intention of developers in the context of mobile platforms where developers can be potential competitors or cooperators and where two platforms offer different policies and developmental environments.

Abstract Social media platforms have been characterised by their programmability, affordances, constraints and stakeholders - the question of value and valuation of platforms, their data and features has, however, received less attention in platform studies. This paper explores the specific socio-technical conditions for valuating platform data and suggests that platforms set up their data to become multivalent, that is to be valuable alongside multiple, possibly conflicting value regimes. Drawing on both platform and valuation studies, it asks how the production, storing and circulation of data, its connection to user action and the various stakeholders of platforms contribute to its valuation. Platform data, the paper suggests, is the outcome of capture systems which allow to collapse action and its capture into pre-structured data forms which remain open to divergent interpretations. Platforms offer such grammars of action both to users and other stakeholders in frontand back-ends, inviting them to produce and engage with its data following heterogeneous orders of worth. Platform data can participate in different valuation regimes at the same time - however, the paper concludes, not all actors can participate in all modes of valuation, as in the end, it is the platform that sets the conditions for participation. The paper offers a conceptual perspective to interrogate what data counts by attending to questions of quantification, its entanglement with valuation and the various technologies and stakeholders involved. It finishes with an empirical experiment to map the various ways in which Instagram data is made to count.

The aim of this article is to get insight into the features of social networking and collaboration in a massive open online course (MOOC) platform. We performed a feature-based analysis of twelve popular MOOC platforms – seven proprietary and five open-source platforms. Our study reveals that there are: (1) Two ways to include social networking – in-course and external; and (2) Two ways to incorporate collaboration functionality – built-in tools and third-party tools. The functionality provided by third-party tools differs; so, the selection of the tool is a challenge. For a built-in tool of MOOC, there is a need to re-identify the features for including it in any other MOOC platform; (3) Different ways to integrate the same tool in platforms; and (4) Different features of the same tool supported by various platforms. The proposed feature list helps future MOOC providers and developers to include social networking and collaboration functionality by selection, in contrast to specifying them afresh; and prospective educators can compare and select platforms, accordingly.

Abstract Motivation Combining gene expression (GE) profiles generated from different platforms enables previously infeasible studies due to sample size limitations. Several cross-platform normalization methods have been developed to remove the systematic differences between platforms, but they may also remove meaningful biological differences among datasets. In this work, we propose a novel approach that removes the platform, not the biological differences. Dubbed as ‘MatchMixeR’, we model platform differences by a linear mixed effects regression (LMER) model, and estimate them from matched GE profiles of the same cell line or tissue measured on different platforms. The resulting model can then be used to remove platform differences in other datasets. By using LMER, we achieve better bias-variance trade-off in parameter estimation. We also design a computationally efficient algorithm based on the moment method, which is ideal for ultra-high-dimensional LMER analysis. Results Compared with several prominent competing methods, MatchMixeR achieved the highest after-normalization concordance. Subsequent differential expression analyses based on datasets integrated from different platforms showed that using MatchMixeR achieved the best trade-off between true and false discoveries, and this advantage is more apparent in datasets with limited samples or unbalanced group proportions. Availability and implementation Our method is implemented in a R-package, ‘MatchMixeR’, freely available at: https://github.com/dy16b/Cross-Platform-Normalization. In this paper, we argue that model-based design and platform-based design are two views of the same thing. A platform is an abstraction layer in the design flow. For example, a core-based architecture and an instruction set architecture are platforms. We focus on the set of designs induced by this abstraction layer. For example, the set of all ASICs based on a particular core-based architecture and the set of all x86 programs are induced sets. Hence, a platform is equivalently a set of designs. Model-based design is about using platforms with useful modeling properties to specify designs, and then synthesizing implementations from these specifications. Hence model-based design is the view from above (more abstract, closer to the problem domain) and platform-based design is the view from below (less abstract, closer to the implementation technology). One way to define a platform is to provide a design language. Any valid expression in the language is an element of the set. A platform provides a set of constraints together with known tradeoffs that flow from those constraints. Actor-oriented platforms, such as Simulink, abstract aspects of program-level platforms, such as Java, C++, and VHDL. Actor-oriented platforms orthogonalize the actor definition language and the actor composition language, enabling highly polymorphic actor definitions and design using multiple models of computation. In particular, we concentrate on the use of constrained models of computation in design. The modeling properties implied by well chosen constraints allow more easily understood designs and are preserved during synthesis into program-level descriptions. We illustrate these concepts by describing a design framework built on Ptolemy II.

Background. The development of postural analysis thanks to force and pressure platforms, in order to determine the center of pressure, can be valuable in the setting of spinal malalignment. The purpose of this study was to compare “pressure” and “force” platforms for the evaluation of the center of pressure. In other words, can we neglect the horizontal ground reaction force in the evaluation of intersegmental moments during standing posture? Methods. Postural data from two healthy adult volunteers were analyzed. Analysis of the posture was done according to a protocol providing sagittal intersegmental moments. A set of 36 markers was used to divide the body in 10 segments. Postacquisition calculations were done in order to obtain the sagittal net intersegmental moments. To evaluate the differences in intersegmental moments between force and pressure platforms, the postacquisition calculations were done with a simulated pressure platform. Mean intersegmental moments between each body segment for each volunteer were compared. Findings. There were significant differences between the 2 platforms in intersegmental moments for the lumbo-sacral junction, hips, knees, and ankles (p<0.005). All differences were inferior to intrasubject variability measured with the force platform (p<0.001). Results from intra- and interobserver comparisons showed that differences measured with the pressure platform were all inferior to the standard error obtained with the force platform for every intersegmental moment (p<0.001). Interpretation. The use of a simulated pressure platform to determine intersegmental moments has the same clinical efficiency as force platforms. Moreover, the possibility to set the platform into the radiograph room will allow in a second time a correlation between radiographic parameters and biomechanical constraints applied to the spine.

The study assessed the member response rate to the Oyo state teaching service commission (TESCOM) interactive learning platforms during the COVID-19 lockdown in Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The sample comprised 3,388 respondents drawn from five online learning platforms (Arts, science, commercial, general and staffroom). Two instruments, Response Rate Factor Questionnaire-Survey monkey (r = 0.83) and participant online direct recording (π = 0.76), were used to collect data at three different intervals. Frequency counts and analysis of variance were used to analyse the data collected. Those online at the time of data collection were 59 (5.2%) for science, 23 (4.3%) for arts, 24 (6.4%) for commercial, 84 (7.4%) for general study and 96 (48.5%) in the staff room platform. A significant difference in member response rate was observed across the learning platforms [F(4,10) = 4.374; p= 0.027< 0.05]. Bonferroni post hoc analysis shown by mean plot revealed that general studies platform had the highest mean score (M=169.0) in terms of members response online followed by staffroom (M=79.0) and lastly commercial platform (M=32.67). It was deduced from the findings that members across the TESCOM interactive learning platforms do not respond online the same way by participating on the respective interactive platform to which they belong. Therefore, TESCOM should ensure that teachers and students actively engage in online learning platforms for better teaching and learning.

Characteristics of hydrodynamic forces and flow fields around the semi-submersible platform induced by the internal solitary wave (ISW) propagation were investigated in a 3D numerical wave tank. Good agreements between numerical results and experimental data of forces and torque on the platform were achieved. The hydrodynamic loads increased and decreased with the increases in the ISW amplitude and fluid depth ratio, respectively. The pressure mainly contributed to the force on the platform. The horizontal forces on bracings were negligible. Almost all the vertical forces on the platform were derived from those on pontoons. The horizontal force and torque on the platform increased with the increases in the angle between the platform symmetrical axis and the ISW propagation direction. The platform subjected the maximum vertical force when the angle was 0°. There were obvious velocity reductions around the platform during the ISW propagation, as visible vortexes shedding around the platform could be observed. Complexities of the distributions of flow fields around the platforms located at the 30°- and 60°-direction were greater than those around the platforms located at the 0°- and 90°-direction. Flow fields around the same kind components of each platform located at different angles were similar.

A tudományos szövegek esetében ez a dominancia plurálisabb, megosztottabb: az észak-amerikaiak mellett a nagy akadémiai kereskedelmi kiadók közt jelentős nyugat-európai szereplők is megtalálhatóak, az indexáló szolgáltatások esetén pedig 2016-tól jelentős ázsiai érdekeltségekről is beszélhetünk. A szociális média említések esetében ellenben az egyesült államokbeli platformok eltéveszthetetlen hegemóniájával találjuk szemben magunkat, amik totálisan uralják a közönséghez vezető csatornákat. --- Platform-imperialism in science and social media: A case study of texts produced on European referendums between 2010 and 2017 In this research I examine the geographical distribution of media representations of European referendums published in scientific journals and social media. The examination was conducted on a sample consisting of 85 SCOPUS-indexed articles with European first or single authors focused on referendums and published between 2010 and 2016, and of more than 70k social media mentions of the Catalan independence referendum of 2017 from the same year. I interpreted the results within the theoretical framework of information- and platform imperialism. At first, I demonstrated that texts crafted for the media representation of European referendums are published on, and exert their influence through platforms owned by Western companies; both in the case of scientific and social media platforms. The prestige and reach of these texts are inseparably interwoven with the mediating platform, showing that transnational companies from a few Western countries dominate the division of the technologically mediated space studies during the research. In the case of scientific texts, the dominance is more diverse and plural. Besides big North-American players, there are major commercial academic publishers from Western Europe, and if abstracting and indexing services are considered then it can be observed that Asia has had a significant share in this business, at least since 2016. However, when social media references are considered an unmistakable hegemony of platforms from the United States, totally dominating audience reach can be observed. Online platforms are a worthy opportunity for extended learning, peer collaboration, and joint efforts outside the university classroom. However, in order to offer such a pedagogical tool, the online environment needs to be designed for teachers and students alike. The University of Tirana does not offer such platforms and hence, this study explores whether other open source platforms could be used to fulfill the aims and objectives of the subjects offered at this university. The results of this research, comparing two groups of students’ performance of the Curriculum Design class, one with no online platform access, and the other with platform access, showed that students’ understanding was heightened significantly in the group with online access. In this paper, the benefits of such opportunities in developing countries with no technological platform are discussed. Furthermore, recommendations for the researcher or teacher are shared regarding the planning and management of resources, such as time, discussion, and conclusions for others interested in embarking on the same path.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the investment strategy of a two-sided platform on reducing transaction costs of two user sides and to study the pricing problem of the platform. Design/methodology/approach Mathematical derivation is used to compute the optimal decisions of a two-sided platform on pricing and investment. Numerical analysis is used to illustrate the findings. Findings It is found that the demand of one user side decreases in the maximal transaction costs reduction to this side but increases in the maximal transaction costs reduction to the other side. It is also found that a platform should never choose the investment in such a way that the maximal transaction costs reductions of two user sides are the same. Research limitations/implications Several limitations exist in this paper, most of which exist due to the assumptions. These limitations could be good research directions in the future. For example, only one platform’s decision is considered, and platforms’ competition is not taken into account. Considering other platforms’ competition, the decisions of the users and the platform would be different. Originality/value From the transaction costs perspective, this paper finds that a platform should never choose the investment in such a way that the maximal transaction costs reductions of two user sides are the same. This conclusion has not been found in previous literature.

Mobile robots undergo a collision-free autonomous motion by using the information obtained from a suitable combination of multiple sensors of same or different families. These sensors are often configured around the chassis of the robotic platform. However, little to no information is available as to how these sensors are configured on mobile robotic platforms and how many of these sensors to place on such platforms. Instead, an empirical approach is adopted. That is, the number of sensors of the same family or any type as well as combination of sensors for detecting obstacles is determined by experiment or information obtained from external sensors. This approach is often seen to be iterative and time consuming. In this paper, an approach for determining the minimum number of sensors and their spacing on the robotic platform is proposed so that mobile robots undergo collision-free motion. The effectiveness of the developed approach is experimentally tested by examining the obstacle avoidance capability of the triomnidirectional wheeled robotic platform based on a motion triggering signal obtained from a skirt of ultrasonic sensors only. It was observed that the newly developed approach allows this robotic platform to avoid obstacles effectively.

Where does the “power” of platformization reside? As is widely recognized, platforms are matchmakers which interface between different markets or “sides.” This article analyzes platform power dynamics through three of the most important markets that Spotify—the leading audio streaming platform—is embedded within: the music market; the advertising market; and the finance market. It does so through the lens of the playlist. Playlists can be seen as a central example of how platforms like Spotify employ curation or “curatorial power” to mediate markets in the attempt to advance their own interests. At the same time, playlists are an outcome of the conflicting pressures and tensions between these markets. As such, they provide a lens through which to view broader structural dynamics within the platform economy. As this case study of Spotify demonstrates, platform “power” is an always unstable and shifting outcome of the ongoing attempt to coordinate between various markets and actors.

Carbonate sediments of nonglacial Cryogenian (659 to 649 Ma) and early Ediacaran (635 to 590 Ma) age exhibit large positive and negative δ13Ccarb excursions in a shallow-water marine platform in northern Namibia. The same excursions are recorded in fringing deep-sea fans and in carbonate platforms on other paleocontinents. However, coeval carbonates in the upper foreslope of the Namibian platform, and to a lesser extent in the outermost platform, have relatively uniform δ13Ccarb compositions compatible with dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the modern ocean. We attribute the uniform values to fluid-buffered diagenesis that occurred where seawater invaded the sediment in response to geothermal porewater convection. This attribution, which is testable with paired Ca and Mg isotopes, implies that large δ13Ccarb excursions observed in Neoproterozoic platforms, while sedimentary in origin, do not reflect the composition of ancient open-ocean DIC.

Purpose This paper aims to examine how customers encounter consumption-based evolution between mobile and offline platforms together with temporal and crossover effects. Counter to research on customer satisfaction theory, which shows that satisfaction directly affects loyalty, the authors show that when shopping between mobile and offline platforms, customers differently evaluate loyalty compared to the traditional satisfaction and loyalty approach. Also, customers differently evaluate three types of service quality from online to offline (O2O) platforms and response dynamically to firm satisfaction and loyalty. Design/methodology/approach This study tests temporal, carryover and crossover effects using longitudinal data sets. Findings From crossover loyalty shifts, the findings show that the relationship between offline provider satisfaction (OS) and mobile provider loyalty (ML) during consumption periods is consistently significant with similar impact. However, mobile provider satisfaction (MS) during the same periods does not impact offline provider loyalty (OL) in the same manner, but differs considerably in terms of pattern of influence. Specifically, the findings show that this crossover effect increases over time even though statistical impact is insignificant. Thus, the carryover loyalty shift has a positive impact when it originally occurs in the offline platform but differs significantly when it originates via the mobile platform. Practical implications – this study offers valuable guidance to managers on how O2O platform-centric firms try to enhance satisfaction with consumption system that links to three types of service quality and loyalty. Research limitations/implications This study offers valuable insights into offline and ML. This is seen, however, as an experimental study and further research using the same method would enable cross-cultural comparators. Practical implications Insights can be drawn from the findings, enabling comparisons relative to service quality-satisfaction-loyalty linkage across dual platforms. The idea of evolution and progression over time is particular pertinent to business practice assuming data sets are gathered, maintained and analyzed. Originality/value Insights can be used from the research findings, including but not limited to comparing the service quality-satisfaction-loyalty linkage across dual platforms and providing firms with an explanation of temporal evolution.

We describe the cultural determinants of social platforms’ accountability through a content analysis technique that considered principles, actors, and instruments, resulting in four models of social platform accountability: accountability set by law, codecided accountability, regulated self-regulation, and pure self-regulation. Our results suggest that most of the 11 countries in this study maintain specific positions on the role of digital media in society. At the same time, some patterns of convergence were evident: the weakening of State control in favor of freedom of information; the enhancement of transparency in social platforms’ politics-related activities as a guiding principle to ensure public monitoring; and the standardization of a multistakeholder model of coregulation. The article also focuses on the technological dimension of social platform accountability, enabling us to recognize the degree to which different models rely on algorithms. It then problematizes the limitations and risks of social platforms’ accountability.

Virtual objects have become a vital component in every IoT platform. Virtual objects are the digital representation of a physical entity. In this paper, we design and implement a cloud-centric IoT platform that serves a purpose for registration and initialization of virtual objects so that technology tinkerers can consume them via the IoT marketplace and integrate them to build IoT applications. The proposed IoT platform differs from existing IoT platforms in the sense that they provide hardware and software services on the same platform that users can plug and play. The proposed IoT platform is separate from the IoT marketplace where users can consume virtual objects to build IoT applications. Experiments are conducted for IoT platform and interworking IoT marketplace based on virtual objects in CoT. The proposed IoT platform provides a user-friendly interface and is secure and reliable. An IoT testbed is developed and a case study is performed for a domestic environment to reuse virtual objects on the IoT marketplace. It also provides the discovery and sharing of virtual objects. IoT devices can be monitored and controlled via virtual objects. We have conducted a comparative analysis of the proposed IoT platform with FIWARE. Results conclude that the proposed system performs marginally better than FIWARE.

Purpose This study aims to compare the rating dynamics of the same hotels in two online review platforms (Booking.com and Trip Advisor), which mainly differ in requiring or not requiring proof of prior reservation before posting a review (respectively, a verified vs a non-verified platform). Design/methodology/approach A verified system, by definition, cannot host fake reviews. Should also the non-verified system be free from “ambiguous” reviews, the structure of ratings (valence, variability, dynamics) for the same items should also be similar. Any detected structural difference, on the contrary, might be linked to a possible review bias. Findings Travelers’ scores in the non-verified platform are higher and much more volatile than ratings in the verified platform. Additionally, the verified review system presents a faster convergence of ratings towards the long-term scores of individual hotels, whereas the non-verified system shows much more discordance in the early phases of the review window. Research limitations/implications The paper offers insights into how to detect suspicious reviews. Non-verified platforms should add indices of scores’ dispersion to existing information available in websites and mobile apps. Moreover, they can use time windows to delete older (and more likely biased) reviews. Findings also ring a warning bell to tourists about the reliability of ratings, particularly when only a few reviews are posted online. Originality/value The across-platform comparison of single items (in terms of ratings’ dynamics and speed of convergence) is a novel contribution that calls for extending the analysis to different destinations and types of platform.

ABSTRACT The accurate detection and quantitation of cytokines in serum are important in the study of disease mechanisms, pathogenesis, and treatment. Serum cytokines can reflect processes that are occurring at the cellular or tissue level and thus provide a means of indirectly monitoring these processes. Multiplex detection of cytokines allows the simultaneous measurement of multiple cytokines in a sample, increasing the efficiency of measuring the cytokines while reducing the serum sample volumes required for the testing. Two commercially available multiplex platforms were evaluated (Pierce SearchLight and Meso Scale Discovery), using multiplexes capable of simultaneously detecting eight cytokines. The cytokines analyzed in this study were gamma interferon, vascular endothelial growth factor, tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-6 (IL-6), macrophage inflammatory protein 1β, monocyte chemoattractant protein 1, IL-12p40, and IL-4. The range of quantitation of the platforms, the recovery of spiked cytokines, and the detection of the cytokines in serum samples from subjects with ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriasis were examined. The findings showed that the detection of the cytokines was highly dependent upon the platform, with the consistency of the detection of cytokines across platforms being dependent upon the cytokine being analyzed. A careful examination of platform assay performance must be made prior to utilizing multiplex platforms in a study. While some cytokines will give similar patterns of results across platforms, others will be highly variable. The use of the same platform within a study or across studies where data will be compared is advised.

This paper aims to compare Inspec on Elsevier’s Engineering Village (EV) and Clarivate’s Web of Science (WOS) from a novice user experience. The main objectives are to identify some R1 institutions that subscribe to Inspec and highlight some of the key differences between the two platforms. Design/methodology/approach Information on Inspec was gathered from various sources such as the home website, IET, and the host platform websites of Elsevier and Clarivate Analytics. Additional evidence was also collected from brochures and guides to help illustrate some of the main features and differences that novice users would be familiar with. Findings Most institutions subscribe to Inspec via the EV platform. Results from the study conclude that EV was the choice over WOS for hosting Inspec owing to a more user-friendly interface, potential lower cost and faster platform updates in response to meeting user needs. Research limitations/implications As database platforms change over time, feature areas such as content, interface and features remain important for information professionals and librarians to stay current with those changes. This paper presents effective and efficient solutions for components of urban logistics. The specificity of such logistics and the multiple limitations led to particular solutions. However, they all share one common feature—the flow consolidation in different variants. This study considers the flow consolidation at the boundary of urban congested areas, through horizontal collaboration between logistic platforms. This way, the urban distribution centers (UDCs) receive all the goods according to the orders addressed to each producer (or group in case of “on-going consolidations”). Deliveries are addressed to a single logistic platform. Thus, the flow consolidation is achieved. Each logistic platform receives part of the consumer goods intended for commercialization, but through collaboration between them (freight exchanges), all the warehouses of the producers have all the ordered goods. Dedicated management of logistics platforms and warehouses within each UDC ensures the confidentiality of distributor data. Three scenarios are presented concerning the same pattern of flow addressed to each UDC. These scenarios differ by the accessibility of the logistics platforms and by the connection between them (due to infrastructure development). The methodology of choosing the variants for composing the flow sent from each logistics platform considered the minimization of transfer times to UDC warehouses. Synthetic indicators allow for comparison between the analyzed scenarios.

Disease is an emerging threat to coral reef ecosystems worldwide, highlighting the need to understand how environmental conditions interact with coral immune function and associated microbial communities to affect holobiont health. Increased coral disease incidence on reefs adjacent to permanently moored platforms on Australia's Great Barrier Reef provided a unique case study to investigate environment–host–microbe interactions in situ . Here, we evaluate coral-associated bacterial community (16S rRNA amplicon sequencing), immune function (protein-based prophenoloxidase-activating system), and water quality parameters before, during and after a disease event. Over the course of the study, 31% of tagged colonies adjacent to platforms developed signs of white syndrome (WS), while all control colonies on a platform-free reef remained visually healthy. Corals adjacent to platforms experienced significant reductions in coral immune function. Additionally, the corals at platform sites that remained visually healthy throughout the study had reduced bacterial diversity compared to healthy colonies at the platform-free site. Interestingly, prior to the observation of macroscopic disease, corals that would develop WS had reduced bacterial diversity and significantly greater community heterogeneity between colonies compared to healthy corals at the same location. These results suggest that activities associated with offshore marine infrastructure impacts coral immunocompetence and associated bacterial community, which affects the susceptibility of corals to disease.

Abstract Digital labour platforms have been increasingly gaining popularity over the past decade. In particular, there has been much debate about workers’ motivations and working conditions on microtask platforms. There exists little evidence on whether dependence on digital microtask platforms provides workers with work and income security in the long term and whether it provides opportunities for skill development. This paper explores the extent to which the seemingly flexible platform work ensures work and income security and provides opportunities for skill development for workers with different levels of experience, based on novel survey data collected on five globally operating microtask platforms and in-depth interviews with workers. The findings show that despite high financial dependence on this work, returns to experience on the platform are meagre in terms of earnings, and highly experienced workers face the same risks as new entrants with regard to discrimination, high work intensity, lack of autonomy and control over work, and social protection. There is also a skills gap between the nature of tasks available on these microtask platforms and the workers’ education levels. Finally, experience does not ensure that workers have the opportunities to undertake complex and challenging tasks, and the possibilities to develop their skills and improve career prospects are limited.

An integrated model between surface and sub-surface is typically done by interconnecting many process modelling platforms. PROSPER and GAP are the common steady state modelling platforms for sub-surface while VMGSim and HYSYS are typical steady state surface modelling platforms. A major issue of using multiple simulation platforms is the compatibility of thermodynamic physical properties calculations among the platforms. This situation makes the simulations difficult to converge to a consistent thermo physical properties values. This is due to different interaction parameters applied in each platform that impact flashing and the physical property values even though the same property package such as Peng Robinson is used. To overcome this convergence problem, a single simulation platform within iCON (PETRONAS’s standard process simulation software, co-developed with VMG-Schlumberger) has been developed. This allows the use of one thermodynamic package across the integrated model. PROSPER sub-surface pressure-flow relationship results were automatically correlated and connected to surface models within the iCON environment. This integrated model was validated with data from operations and yielded about 1.23% average error tolerance. Based on this validated model, an optimization envelope can be developed with all possible well lineup configurations. This envelope covers set points for the operations where CAPEX free optimization can readily be applied.

This paper deals with comparing methods of gaining and evaluating plantograms. The primary goal was to verify similarity of results of plantographic measurements that were carried out on two different platforms – Emed and PodoCam. The second goal of this paper was to evaluate and compare gained plantograms using three methods of evaluating plantograms, specifically Chippaux-Šmiřák (simplified), Sztriter-Godunov and Segment Method. While comparing the platforms we found out, using the Wilcoxon pair test, that plantograms gained on Emed and PodoCam platforms differ significantly. Emed generates plantograms testifying mostly high foot arches, while PodoCam with the same people reports foot arch to be standard or even slightly flat. While comparing three chosen evaluating methods on individual platforms, we primarily used Friedman ANOVA test. We notified statistically significant difference for plantograms gained on the PodoCam platform which Wilcoxon pair test confirmed. For plantograms from the Emed platform Friedman ANOVA did not show any statistically significant difference. Based on the upper mentioned results we recomend to use PodoCam and within the verified evaluating methods we recomend Sztriter-Godunov method. For evaluating high foot arch it would be appropriate to use Chippaux-Šmiřák method.

In the context of global changes, nature-based solutions (NBSs) increasingly draw attention as a possible way to reduce disaster risk associated with extreme hydro-meteorological events while providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits at the same time. The PHUSICOS platform is dedicated to gather and analyse relevant NBSs used to reduce disaster risk associated with extreme hydro-meteorological events in mountainous and hilly lands. To design the platform, an in-depth review of 11 existing platforms has been performed. The PHUSICOS platform currently references 152 literature NBS cases and is continuously enriched through the contribution of NBS community. The platform also proposes a qualitative assessment of the NBSs collected according to 15 criteria related with five ambits: “disaster risk reduction”, “technical and economical feasibility”, “environment”, “society”, and “local economy”. This paper presents the structure of the platform and a first analysis of its content.

The paper proposed the concept of building and using the digital knowledge platform on the specialty. Experimental methods, together with the method of simulation, ensure the reliability of the obtained theoretical results and give confidence in the creation and use of digital knowledge platforms in specific specialties at the main departments. The digital knowledge platform is a special way organized and interconnected models of educational disciplines, which isomorphically reflect the content of the curriculum training programs. The partial implementation and experience of using the digital knowledge platform in individual disciplines have shown that the creation and maintenance of such platforms require certain resource costs. At the same time, the transition to an innovative training technology based on digital knowledge platforms will make it possible to move away from the traditional anthropocentric training model to a more progressive system-synergetic model that takes into account the capabilities of modern information technologies. The results of experimental studies conducted to clarify the possibility of students to create models of their knowledge showed that students are able to create models of their knowledge, which can be taken as a basis for the formation of a generalized model of training knowledge, which is the main element of digital knowledge platforms. In addition, within the framework of the concept being developed, another new term “plite” was introduced, the semantic part of which denotes a knowledge platform for the specialty. The technology of creating the plites should obviously be similar to the technology of creating the sites, and the peculiarity should be that their structures were isomorphic to the structures of curriculum, and the content part should be used exclusively for teaching. Then, fully developed plites for specific specialties will be independent units of educational knowledge that can be used for educational purposes by other higher educational institutions.
