Load modeling is well known to have a significant impact on power system analysis. The task of load modeling, however, is time-consuming and expensive. Accurate load models should be developed for loads at critical locations. In this paper, applying bifurcation analysis, the problem of optimal placements of measurement devices for load model development from the viewpoint of voltage stability analysis is investigated. Voltage instability/collapse is modeled using bifurcation theory first. An optimal placement problem is formulated. An optimal placement identification scheme is proposed and applied to Taiwan power system. Optimal placements of measurement devices are identified. Validation of the selected optimal placements is performed. The robustness of optimal placements under different power transfer patterns is also examined.

The combination of standard robot systems with tape and fiber placement technology reduces system costs and increases flexibility. To increase machine utilization and to reduce machine effort, tape and fiber placement systems also have to be flexible.

This paper proposes a machine vision-based, servo-controlled delta robotic system for solenoid housing placement. The system consists of a charge-coupled device camera and a delta robot. To begin the placement process, the solenoid housing targets inside the camera field were identified and used to guide the delta robot to the grabbing zone according to the calibrated homography transformation. To determine the angle of solenoid housing, image preprocessing was then implemented in order to rotate the target object to assemble with the solenoid coil. Finally, the solenoid housing was grabbed automatically and placed in the collecting box. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system can help to reduce operator fatigue and to achieve high-quality placements.

AbstractThe paper presents a new missile autopilot system design. The design is achieved through the pole-placement in quasi-continuous high-order sliding mode gains adjustment. Enhanced performance, strong robustness and smooth control are obtained through arbitrary increase of the number of non-oscillatory stable poles. The target application of this technique the two-channel pitch/yaw missile autopilot system is considered. Numerical simulations indicate that the arbitrary-order sliding modes based pole placement’s performance compares favourably against recently proposed high-order pole placement schemes.The proposed arbitrary-order pole placement scheme presents a promising design tool for finite-time stabilisation and control of uncertain multivariable systems.

To each rook placement in a root system one can assign the coadjoint orbit of the Borel subgroup of a reductive algebraic group with this root system. Degenerations of such orbits induce a natural partial order on the set of rook placements. We study combinatorial structure of the set of rook placements in An− 1 with respect to a slightly different order and prove that this poset is graded.

New Guinea impatiens `Illusion' were grown in a recirculating subirrigation system using a controlled-release complete fertilizer (Osmocote 14–14–14). In a preliminary experiment, plants were grown under varying label rates (0, 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 4x) incorporated throughout the growing medium. Excellent growth and high-quality plants were produced at the 0.5x and 1x rates. Higher rates caused reduced growth and quality. The next study was a factorial experiment of rate (0.25x, 0.5x, 0.75x, and 1x) times placement (incorporated, top dress, bottom placement, and dibble). Slight growth increases and dramatic leaf area increases were observed with increasing fertilizer rate, regardless of placement. Slightly higher fresh and dry weights were observed in the incorporated treatment compared to the top dress treatment. Both the incorporated and top dress treatments yielded better growth than bottom placement or dibble treatments. Other parameters measured (height, chlorophyll content) did not appear to be affected by placement. EC (dS/m) of the growing medium was highest in the top 1/3 of the container in all placement treatments. EC increased with increasing rate. EC was higher in the incorporated than in the top-dress treatment, which may be due to different release rates or may be an artifact of extraction (prill removal). No rates or placements showed damaging EC levels.

The linearised complex Ginzburg–Landau equation is a model for the evolution of small fluid perturbations, such as in a bluff body wake. By implementing actuators and sensors and designing an H2 optimal controller, we control a supercritical, infinite-domain formulation of this system. We seek the optimal actuator and sensor placement that minimises the H2 norm of the controlled system, from flow disturbances and sensor noise to a cost on the perturbation and input magnitudes. We formulate the gradient of the H2 squared norm with respect to the actuator and sensor placements and iterate towards the optimal placement. When stochastic flow disturbances are present everywhere in the spatial domain, it is optimal to place the actuator just upstream of the origin and the sensor just downstream. With pairs of actuators and sensors, it is optimal to place each actuator slightly upstream of each corresponding sensor, and scatter the pairs throughout the spatial domain. When disturbances are only introduced upstream, the optimal placement shifts upstream as well. Global mode and Gramian analyses fail to predict the optimal placement; they produce H2 norms about five times higher than at the true optimum. The wavemaker region is a better guess for the optimal placement.

The well-placement of an enhanced geothermal system (EGS) is significant to its performance and economic viability because of the fractures in the thermal reservoir and the expensive cost of well-drilling. In this work, a numerical simulation and genetic algorithm are combined to search for the optimization of the well-placement for an EGS, considering the uneven distribution of fractures. The fracture continuum method is used to simplify the seepage in the fractured reservoir to reduce the computational expense of a numerical simulation. In order to reduce the potential well-placements, the well-placement optimization problem is regarded as a 0-1 programming problem. A 2-D assumptive thermal reservoir model is used to verify the validity of the optimization method. The results indicate that the well-placement optimization proposed in this paper can improve the performance of an EGS.

The energy storage system (ESS) is developing into a very important element for the stable operation of power systems. An ESS is characterized by rapid control, free charging, and discharging. Because of these characteristics, it can efficiently respond to sudden events that affect the power system and can help to resolve congested lines caused by the excessive output of distributed generators (DGs) using renewable energy sources (RESs). In order to efficiently and economically install new ESSs in the power system, the following two factors must be considered: the optimal installation placements and the optimal sizes of ESSs. Many studies have explored the optimal installation placement and the sizing of ESSs by using analytical approaches, mathematical optimization techniques, and artificial intelligence. This paper presents an algorithm to determine the optimal installation placement and sizing of ESSs for a virtual multi-slack (VMS) operation based on a power sensitivity analysis in a stand-alone microgrid. Through the proposed algorithm, the optimal installation placement can be determined by a simple calculation based on a power sensitivity matrix, and the optimal sizing of the ESS for the determined placement can be obtained at the same time. The algorithm is verified through several case studies in a stand-alone microgrid based on practical power system data. The results of the proposed algorithm show that installing ESSs in the optimal placement could improve the voltage stability of the microgrid. The sizing of the newly installed ESS was also properly determined.

Abstract An original Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL) code generation tool that can be used to automate Metabolic P (MP) system implementation in hardware such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) is described. Unlike P systems, MP systems use a single membrane in their computations. Nevertheless, there are many biological processes that have been successfully modeled by MP systems in software. This is the first attempt to analyze MP system hardware implementations. Two different MP systems are investigated with the purpose of verifying the developed software: the model of glucose–insulin interactions in the Intravenous Glucose Tolerance Test (IVGTT), and the Non-Photochemical Quenching process. The implemented systems’ calculation accuracy and hardware resource usage are examined. It is found that code generation tool works adequately; however, a final decision has to be done by the developer because sometimes several implementation architecture alternatives have to be considered. As an archetypical example serves the IVGTT MP systems’ 21–23 bits FPGA implementation manifesting this in the Digital Signal Processor (DSP), slice, and 4-input LUT usage.

Background: Blind (unguided) feeding tube placement results in 0.5% of patients suffering major complications mainly due to lung misplacement detected prior to feeding. Electromagnet-guided (Cortrak) tube placement could pre-empt such complications but undetected misplacements still occur due to incorrect trace interpretation. By identifying gastrointestinal (GI) flexures from the trace, ‘the GI flexure system’, it has been proposed that tube position can be interpreted. Aims: To audit agreement between standards of interpreting tube position: the Cortrak ‘GI flexure’ system versus X-ray. Methods: In 185 primary nasointestinal tube placements tube position determined by Cortrak trace interpretation (GI flexure) was retrospectively compared with radiological position in a blinded study. Findings: Radiological and Cortrak interpretation agreed in 92.2–98.3% of placements at different GI flexures. Discrepancy mainly occurred because some radiological images were unclear or did not cover all anatomical points. Conclusion: The GI flexure method of Cortrak interpretation appears safe but would necessitate prospective radiological investigation to definitively test equivalence.

Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to find the best distributed generators (DGs) location for improving reliability and reducing power loss using distribution system reconfiguration. This is implemented in the presence of the tie-switches. It proposes a search-based algorithm for the reconfiguration problem. Individual DG placement is obtained for all system configurations, and analytical hierarchy process tool is used for finding the overall best location. This is carried out for various system loadings. Design/methodology/approach – This paper proposes a knowledge-based search algorithm which needs the base conditions of the distribution system. A detailed analysis is carried out for finding the best DG locations from the obtained DG placements for various system configurations. Simulations are rigorously carried out with the help of programming. Results from these simulations are further given to analytical hierarchy tool for obtaining the DGs location. Findings – The findings of the paper are the DG placement for various system loadings and various system configurations and to obtain the best DG location for any system configuration. A search-based algorithm is designed for accomplishing it. Originality/value – The proposed method identifies the placement of distributed generation at distribution systems for reliability improvement and power loss reduction which is one of the present day needs for fulfilling the raising power consumers.

<p>A hybrid method has been suggested for optimal placement of multiple renewable distribution generations (RDGs) in microgrid system. The analytical approaches have not been appropriated for optimal placements of multiple solar photovoltaic (SPV) based on RDGs alone. In this work, hybridization of a fuzzy method and particle swarm optimization (PSO) search for the optimal placement of multiple RDGs in microgrid systems for decreasing the active power loss has been proposed. In this approach, the sizes of RDGs are evaluated at every bus by PSO method while the locations are determined by fuzzy based technique. The objective function (OBF) has been minimized under operating constraints. The improvements in nodal voltage profile have been observed. To confirm the proposed hybrid approach, results have been compared with bat algorithm (BA) technique and existing fast improved analytical (IA) method results. The suggested technique has been tested on 33-bus and 69-bus microgrid system.</p>

Electromagnetic (EM) guided enteral tube placement may reduce lung misplacement to almost zero in expert centres, but more than 60 undetected misplacements had occurred by 2016 resulting in major morbidity or death. Aim: Determine the accuracy of manufacturer guidance in trace interpretation against what is referred to as the ‘GI flexure system’. Methods: The authors prospectively observed the accuracy of the ‘GI flexure system’ of trace interpretation against manufacturer guidance in primary nasointestinal (NI) tube placements. Findings: Contrary to manufacturer guidance, 33% of traces deviated >5 cm from the sagittal midline and 26.5% were oesophageal when entering the lower left quadrant, incorrectly indicating lung and gastric placement, respectively. Conversely, the GI flexure system identified ≥99.4% of GI traces when they reached the gastric body flexure; 100% at the superior duodenal flexure. All lung misplacements were identified by the absence of GI flexures. Conclusion: Current manufacturer guidance should be updated to the GI flexure system of interpretation.

Abstract OBJECTIVE Biplanar fluoroscopic imaging linked to a computer-driven mechanical end-effector is under development as a targeting system for spinal surgery. This technology has the potential to enhance standard intraoperative fluoroscopic information for localization of the pedicle entry point and trajectory, and it may be an effective alternative to the computed tomography-based image-guided system (IGS) in pedicle screw placement. A preclinical study to assess the accuracy and time efficiency of this system versus a conventional IGS was conducted. METHODS Pedicle screw placement was performed in six cadavers from T1 to S1 levels using the ViewPoint IGS (Picker International, Inc., Cleveland, OH) on one side versus the Fluorotactic guidance system (Z-Kat, Inc., Miami, FL) on the other side. Of 216 possible pedicles, 208 were instrumented; 8 pedicle diameters were too small or were not adequately imaged. Postinsertion, each pedicle was assessed for the presence and location of cortical perforation using computed tomographic scanning and direct visualization. RESULTS The number of successful screw placements was 89 (87.3%) of 102 for IGS and 87 (82.1%) of 106 for the Fluorotactic guidance system, respectively. The mean time to register and operate on one level using the Fluorotactic guidance system was 14:34 minutes (minutes:seconds), compared with 6:50 minutes using the IGS. The average fluoroscope time was 4.6 seconds per pedicle. CONCLUSION Our data indicate that this first-generation fluoroscopy-based targeting system can significantly assist the surgeon in pedicle screw placement. The overall accuracy is comparable to an IGS, especially in the region of T9–L5. A second-generation system with a faster end-effector and user-friendly interface should significantly reduce the operating and fluoroscope time.

BackgroundMisplacement of enteral feeding tubes (EFT) in the lungs is a serious and potentially fatal event. A recent Food and Drug Administration Patient Safety Alert emphasized the need for improved technology for the safe and effective delivery of EFTs.ObjectiveWe investigated the feasibility and safety of ENvue, a novel electromagnetic tracking system (EMTS) to aid qualified operators in the placement of EFT.MethodsThis is a prospective, single-arm study of patients in intensive care units at two US hospitals who required EFTs. The primary outcome was appropriate placement of EFTs without occurrence of guidance-related adverse events (AEs), as confirmed by both EMTS and radiography. Secondary outcomes were reconfirmation of the EFT tip location at a follow-up visit using the EMTS compared with radiography, tube retrograde migration from initial location and AEs.ResultsSixty-five patients were included in the intent-to-treat analysis. EFTs were successfully placed in 57 patients. In eight patients, placement was unsuccessful due to anatomic abnormalities. According to both the EMTS and radiography, no lung placements occurred. No pneumothoraces were reported, nor any guidance-related AEs. Precise agreement of tube tip location was achieved between the EMTS evaluations and radiographs for 56 of the 58 (96.5%) successful placements (one patient had two placements). Tube tip location was re-confirmed 12–49 hours after EFT insertion by the EMTS and radiographs in 48 patients (84%). For 43/48 patients (89.5%), full agreement between the EMTS and radiography evaluations was observed. For the five remaining patients, the misalignment between the evaluations was within the gastrointestinal tract. Retrograde migration from the initial location was observed in 4/49 patients (8%).ConclusionA novel electromagnetic system demonstrated feasibility and safety of real-time and follow-up tracking of EFT placement into the stomach and small intestine, as confirmed by radiographs. No inadvertent placements into the lungs were documented.Level of evidenceLevel V (large case series).

In 2014, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) modified the selection and placement process for newly hired air traffic controllers. Among other procedural changes, the way new hires were assigned to the air traffic options (i.e., en route vs. terminal) changed significantly from previous placement practices. This study looks at the reactions of students regarding their option placements under the new system. In particular, their original option preference, actual option assigned, satisfaction with their actual option placement, and intentions to switch options later on in their career were assessed with a brief survey. The relationship of their responses to these items and their first performance indicator (i.e., passing/failing at the Academy) was also examined.
