Place attachment is the development of a psychological and emotional bond between an individual and their environmental setting. While positive experiences in the residential neighborhood are central to ongoing develop-ment of people–place bonds, whether negative experiences erode place attachment remains unknown. In this study, we explore the relationship between crime victimization, social ties, neighboring behaviors, and place attachment in Brisbane, Australia. Using multilevel linear modeling, we examine whether negative experiences, specifically crime victimization, in the residential neighborhood affect residents’ attachment to place. We also explore whether this relationship is moderated by neighborhood social ties and/or interactions with neighbors. Results indicate that the negative impact of victimization in the residential neighborhood on place attachment is attenuated through frequent social and/or functional interactions with neighbors.

Feeling socially integrated and being satisfied with one’s social life are important indicators for happiness and well-being of individuals and for the strength of local communities. The effect of the living environment on social networks and the importance of local social contacts in the neighborhood has been addressed by many studies. However, social satisfaction has received little attention in these studies. The aim of this study is to describe and predict the effect of personal and neighborhood characteristics on social satisfaction mediated by the impact of place attachment and neighborhood networks. A path analysis is used based on survey and diary data collected between April and May 2014 in Eindhoven and surroundings in the Netherlands among 177 respondents. Results show that social characteristics of the neighborhood play an important role in explaining social satisfaction of individuals. In addition, results confirm the importance of participating in social activities and walking or cycling in the neighborhood.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the association of neighborhood location with place attachment and residential satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach First, the authors reviewed the literature on place attachment and residential satisfaction, and then generated a questionnaire based on the scales from the literature. The authors surveyed 135 respondents in two neighborhoods of Ankara, a metropolitan city in Turkey: one in the city center, the other in a suburb. To analyze the data, first, factor analysis, and later, multivariate analysis of variance and correlation tests were conducted. Findings The results indicated that place attachment and residential satisfaction were positively correlated, in congruence with the related literature; however, neighborhood location appeared to be associated only with residential satisfaction. The theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed with respect to the recent issues on housing. Originality/value The effects of neighborhood location on place attachment and residential satisfaction (by comparing two different residential areas of the city) have not been adequately examined in earlier studies. The study results provide an understanding of the effectiveness of residential location on improving place attachment and residential satisfaction and contribute to the existing literature. Although the study findings may not be generalized to other locations in Turkey, this study contributed to the previous studies on place attachment and residential satisfaction by providing data from Turkish residents, which is less often examined.

Drawing on a citywide survey of 39 urban neighborhoods and a qualitative case study of a neighborhood in Guangzhou, China, this research addresses how communal space, social capital, and neighborhood attachment (NA) jointly shape neighborhood participation (NP). Communal space is strongly and significantly associated with NP. Furthermore, we find that communal space is related to NP in two ways: promoting place-based social relations (the social-capital mechanism) and nurturing place attachment (the intrapsychic mechanism). These findings point to the significance of communal space as a civic focal point in community building and place making.

When considering the factors important for disaster recovery, one must consider the attachment individuals have toward their living area. This article reviews and synthesizes the current literature on the determinants of place attachment in the context of postdisaster recovery. Although the majority of the reviewed articles focused on disaster recovery, there were some which had a broader scope and were included due to their importance. This research categorizes the determinants of place attachment into four categories: demographic, socioeconomic, spatial, and psychosocial. Age, ethnicity, and religion were grouped under the category of demographics. Job status, education, and property ownership were categorized under the socioeconomic category. Attachment to home, neighborhood, and city, together with attachment to rural and urban areas, were grouped under the spatial category. Finally, mental health status and community attachment were classified under the psychosocial heading. Based on the outcome of the aforementioned synthesis, this article develops a conceptual framework to guide future research.

This research interprets the marginalized neighborhood of Serrinha as a place in the city of Florianópolis, Brazil, by examining the relations between the physical neighborhood and internal social networks. I use concepts from the anthropology of materiality and an interdisciplinary understanding of place attachment to examine how the social and physical dimensions of place coalesce within Serrinha. I employ data from eight weeks of ethnographic research and Scannell and Gifford’s tripartite model of place attachment to frame the everyday experiences and affects of Serrinha residents, especially to illustrate Serrinha outside of the typical stereotypes of favelas. In doing so, the study analyzes the symbolic significance of brick as the material of choice for Serrinha’s self-built houses and asserts that the brick is a metaphor for local and global relationships. Ultimately, this research argues that autoconstruction of the house with brick constitutes a significant social and emotional process of attachment in Serrinha.

The urban population is increasing day by day, threatening human health. Neighborhood parks in which people can participate in physical activities have an important place in reducing the negative effects of urban life. However, not much is known much about factors such as “park satisfaction” and “place attachment”, which may play a role in the visitors’ participation in and continuation of physical activity in neighborhood parks, or the relationship between these factors. The purpose of this study was thus to examine the relationship between park satisfaction, place attachment and revisit intention. The data were obtained using the convenience sampling method from 357 park visitors who visited a park for physical activity. The methodological principles of structural equation modeling were used to test the conceptual model based on the literature review. According to the results, park satisfaction had a positive and significant effect on park attachment. In addition, park attachment played a mediating role between satisfaction and revisit intention. As a result, a theoretical and comprehensive model that revealed the relationship between park satisfaction, park attachment and revisit intention was developed. It is thought that the results will guide local governments, managers responsible for parks and park designers in maintaining open-air recreation facilities and services in urban areas.

Official planning documents and strategies often look at cities from above neglecting people’s experiences and practices. Meanwhile cities as meaningful places are constructed though citizens’ practices, memories and ties with their surroundings. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to discover people’s bonds with their urban allotment gardens – dachas – in the Russian city of Kaliningrad and to explore the significance of these bonds for city development. The phenomenon of the dacha has a long history in Russia. Similar to urban allotment gardens in other countries, dachas are an essential part of the city landscape in many post-socialist countries but differ by their large scale. Recent decades have brought diversity into the urban dacha areas of Russia and express a shift away from their primary function of recreational horticulture towards a greater variety in usage, including housing. Due to multiple legal frameworks these areas have become special enclaves with haphazard development, inadequate levels of infrastructure and low quality of self-build houses. Urban dachas can be examined as an example of both post-socialist suburbanization and informal settlement. In this thesis the concept of place attachment, derived from the works of human geographers and environmental psychologists, is used as both the theoretical and methodological lens to look at people-place relations in urban dacha areas. The empirical evidence for this study was gathered through interviews and observations in Kaliningrad where urban dachas comprise 11% of the city’s territory. To capture the different aspects of place attachment in these areas the data was categorised according to common themes. The findings of this study show the complexity of the bonds between people and their urban allotment gardens. Despite all the hardships, these places provide their residents an opportunity for independence and self-realization. The respondents demonstrated an energy and aspiration to achieve increased well-being for themselves and their families, however the lack of resources and institutions hinders the development of place attachment in urban dacha areas. The identified features of people’s bonds with their dachas should not only be preconditions for urban planning but also an integral part of the planning and development process. This study also tests the application of the concept of place attachment for urban studies.

The city of Poseidonia-Paestum on the Italian peninsula has a long and manifold history throughout Antiquity. The city was founded by Greek settlers in the seventh century BC, put under Lucanian rule around 400 BC, and was finally colonized by the Romans in the year of 273 BC. This study aims to connect the tangible traces of history to the intangible feelings for a place and explore how these elements give rise to the psychological process of place attachment. The concept holds and interdisciplinary potential and thus is possible to apply to the ancient material from Poseidonia-Paestum. The Greek agora, the Roman forum and the extramural Sanctuary of Santa Venera is approached and analysed from this perspective. A close reading of previous research on place attachment in combination with the archaeological record from Poseidonia-Paestum has formed the basis for analysing the material. This study has shown that it is possible to contextualize the theoretical framework of place attachment in an ancient material by pointing out the semiotic potency of the material remains from Poseidonia-Paestum. Through this perspective new questions have been raised and interpreted. Ultimately, a deeper understanding of the attitudes and ideas that formed the basis of human actions and decisions in the ancient city of Poseidonia-Paestum has been reached.

Abstract If we take residential neighbourhoods as a space for making social ties and interactions, we can learn a lot about the generated neighbourhood effects on its residents and their subsequent attachments towards neighbourhoods as a place. It is believed that neighbourhoods have an impact on individuals and groups either significant or insignificant. The neighbourhood effect is understood by deeply observing the common trends, norms and similar behaviours, furthermore, by measuring the influence it has on life of its residents. This study intends to explore the relationships between neighbourhood effects and place attachment and is inspired from a bigger project ‘The Neighbourhood Revisited’ (Research programme in Department of Human Geography at Stockholm University, Riksbankens Jubileumsfond 2019-2024) that explores the spatial polarization and social cohesion in contemporary Sweden. The aim of my study is to look at social ties, how it changes over time and what neighbourhood effects we can observe on its residents’ social lives. Neighbourhood effect and place attachment studied together, through the narratives of local residents give many new meanings to both concepts. My focus here is on social aspects of it.

We have conducted a qualitative study where the purpose is to highlight what significance the feeling of home and home as a bodily location has to people who are or have been homeless. We have conducted seven interviews with individuals who fit this description. Our starting point was the Nattcaféet in Halmstad that is run by the Swedish church to help and support people who are in need of support in different ways. This may concern homeless people, in need clothes, but it can also be people who are lonely and appreciate the company.Question we sought to answer: What emotional and practical significance does the feeling of home and the home as a bodily place have for the homeless and former homeless people that take part in Nattcaféets activities in Halmstad? The empirical data that we have collected, were analyzed from three social psychological theories: Stigma and identity (Goffman, 1963), Social bonds (Scheff, 1990) and Place Attachment (Gustafson, 2002). This was done with the hermeneutics as science theoretical approach. Based on these social psychological theories, we have tried to highlight the importance of home for people who at some point have been homeless. Our study shows that the life of a homeless person is both physically and psychologically burdensome, and that this may leave clear traces in the individual's personality.

This chapter explores how long-time neighborhood activists helped build the CVSP into the nation’s most significant environmental-justice movement by mobilizing the radical histories, strong place attachment, and “socially thick” landscape of community organizing in the working-class neighborhood of La Teja. It examines the role of La Teja’s community media, the environmental-education efforts of teachers at a local special-needs school, and children’s creative-art projects in raising awareness of neighborhood lead poisoning and generating critical environmental consciousness. The chapter conveys the spirit and poetics of murga, a popular musical theater genre of Carnival. In paralleling the poetic structure of murga, the chapter seeks to capture the inventive, narrative, hopeful, and performative dimensions of environmental-justice movements.

Annotation:
Before trying to analyze environmental assessment throughout the life span, let us briefly consider what environmental assessment means. Craik (1971), for instance, distinguishes five kinds of place assessment: physical and spatial properties of places, number and variety of artifacts in a place, traits of places, behaviors typically occurring in a place, and institutional attributes or social climate of places. In general, models of environmental assessment can be considered place centered, while environmental appraisal relates more to observer-centered variables. Gifford (1987) stresses how environmental appraisal refers to different personal impressions, such as descriptions, evaluations, emotional reactions, meanings, and attitudes of concern. In his recent review of environmental psychology, Holahan (1986) includes under assessment studies relating to the affective appraisal of the environment (Russell & Lanius, 1984), place evaluation envisioned in terms of the degree to which a place is seen as helping to achieve goals (Canter, 1983), the cognitive components in environmental assessment and the “supporting environment”—that is, an environment in which the information necessary for making decisions is readily available and interpretable (Kaplan, 1982), preferences for places and their attractiveness (Nasar, 1983; Zube & Pitt, 1981), residential satisfaction and neighborhood attachment (Fried, 1982; Galster & Hesser, 1981), and identification of standards of quality for various settings (Craik, 1981). Thus environmental assessment includes a variety of factors and/or of processes, ranging from the mere perception of a place to affective/emotional evaluations of it. Even if all of the components of assessment are relevant, not all of them will be considered here. We will focus mainly on cognitive aspects of environmental assessment. This means perception, cognitive evaluation, affective/emotional evaluation, and preference for places. These aspects are all interrelated to the concept of “place schema” (we will use “schema” when referring to one single schema, and “schemata” when referring to the plural). A place schema is abstract and hierarchically organized knowledge about places. Perception of a place can be viewed as the mere fact of coming into contact with a setting through the senses. Perception may also include the categorization and/or the conceptualization of a place, and it can also mean to form or use place schemata.

Following a rapid transition to markets, democracy and private enterprise, Serbia’s capital Belgrade is emerging as a ‘global city’, but this ambition is coming at a cost to the environment and a loss of sense of place for its people. Diverse identities and changing values over time are being challenged as the city transitions out of a complex socialist past into a pervasively global economy, which by definition challenges locally embedded hybridity of place and puts strain on sustainable growth. Open spaces are required for city residents to live, work, and move efficiently, making the use, access, and ecological integrity of open spaces a city-wide priority. The dependence and attachment of city residents to these spaces provides an ideal baseline for analysis of different open space typologies integral to the urban fabric defining a wide range of urban resiliency strategies. This people-centered approach, coupled with an understanding of the contemporary and historical significance of open spaces, raises the question of how to improve and connect such forms to the urban fabric while respecting place identity in response to post-socialist spatial change. Our case studies inspect the socialist landscapes of public open spaces in New Belgrade as they have transformed in a contemporary context. Other case studies demonstrate the systematic loss of open space taken over by private informal housing on one hand, but also as people-driven initiatives reclaiming the urban landscape on the other. Using fresh empirical evidence and case study analysis at the neighborhood scale, this research employs an open space typology of resiliency in place for a connected urban mosaic of post-socialist Belgrade. The analytical framework draws on existing urban research in the context of post-socialist transition and advances a design matrix to analyze open space forms for connectivity in relation to place and sustainability.
