Language plays an important role in defining identities in older adulthood. Both self-perception and others' perceptions of older adults are reflected through language used by older and younger adults (see recent texts: de Bot & Makoni, 2005; Harwood, 2007; Hummert & Nussbaum, 2001; Nussbaum & Coupland, 2004). In this review, we outline key theoretical perspectives on the study of communication with older adults and provide evidence supporting these perspectives within the context of age stereotypes, intergenerational communication, cross-cultural communication, and health care encounters. Given that communication is an interactive process, we discuss how older adults use language and communication to respond to age stereotypes and adaptively cope with age-related losses. We also discuss communication interventions aimed at improving interactions between care providers and older adults, and opportunities that technology brings to enhance communication within and across generations.

Purpose/Aim The paper aims to analyse the perception of being empowered according to the self-evaluation of nurse managers, presenting it as structural and psychological empowerment. Methods A questionnaire-based study was conducted. The sample consisted of 193 nurse managers working in a total of seven university and general level hospitals in Lithuania. The Conditions of Work Effectiveness Questionnaire-II measuring structural empowerment and the Work Empowerment Questionnaire measuring psychological empowerment were used. Results The paper reveals that nurse managers experienced structural empowerment at a moderate level and were highly psychologically empowered. Conclusions These findings are in line with previous research. The results showed that particular background factors were related to aspects of empowerment. The findings of this research can be used to examine the structural and psychological aspects that function as barriers to feeling empowered. The results are also useful for chief nurses who are involved in the recruitment and retention of nurse managers. Further research is needed to look into the question of improving formal power issues, e.g. the rewards for innovation at work, and also outcome empowerment aspects that may affect changes in the way that nurse managers carry out their work.

The study of young people who apply tattoos and without them is discussed in the article. If earlier tattooing was considered as a destructive subculture of the criminal world, today the attitude of young people to tattoos has become a self-expression, a sign of their subculture. However, following the fashion most often has psychological aspects and mechanisms. The hypothesis of the study was the assumption that the perception of the body image, the characteristics of identity and selfattitude, self-presentation and existential orientation of young people with and without tattoos will have an internal relationship and significantly differ from each other. The study involved 112 young people with and without tattoos. Differences were found between the characteristics of young people with and without tattoos, such psychological aspects of the desire for tattooing were revealed, such as: perception of the body as a carrier of information, rather than the perception of the body in its holistic context; identification of young people with tattoos correlates with feminine characteristics and creative roles; high self-presentation, adequate self-esteem and low self-attitude; low level of comprehension and existential fulfillment.

The article deals with the main approaches to the study of the problem of cybercommunicative personality dependence in domestic and foreign psychology. It is shown that the problem of psychological predisposition has not been studied in the foreign psychology, mainly the various aspects of the study of dependence, which are conducted in the main directions as an individual variable - cognitive, motivational, emotional and behavioral characteristics of the dependent personality and as a set of behavioral features. The problem of dependent personality is represented by several areas: dependence on the Internet, network gambling and other numerous varieties of dependence. Mostly dependence is seen as a consequence of interpersonal transactions within social groups that create the effect of "social dependence"; dependence as a set of behavioral features. In Ukrainian psychological science, in broad sense, addiction is seen as a specific way of thinking, perception and interpretation, of feeling and of the outside world. The main features of online dependencies are: obsessional passion for work at a computer (games, programming or other activities); pathological commitment to online gambling, online auctions or virtual purchases; Dependence on the social use of the Internet (chatting in chat, group games and teleconferencing), etc.

The article examines scientific approaches and contexts of studying corruption as one of the most important psychological, social, economic and political problems. The article aims to determine the psychological contexts of the study of corruption as a complex multi-layered social phenomenon in foreign scientific studies; identifying its unexplored psychological variables in order to create conditions for the further development of programs for the prevention of corruption acts. The main areas of scientific analysis were: the perception of social norms and morality in the context of corrupt human behaviour, the influence of cultural beliefs and value systems, cross-cultural and gender specifics of corruption, etc. It is noted that not all societies perceive corruption in the same way. The ambiguity of the evidence of the classical interaction of power and corruption has been revealed. While some studies have indicated that involvement in power increases corrupt behaviour, others have shown that an individual's perception of power is important. It was established that perceived norms and moral costs are the main factors of a person's intention to engage in corruption-related behaviour. The perception that people around us are behaving dishonestly contributes to the further strengthening of such behaviour. Certain personality traits associated with corrupt behaviour have been identified. In particular, psychopathy, narcissism, machiavellianism, extraversion, extrinsic motivation, and low life satisfaction and self-esteem contribute to corruption. Regarding the gender of the participants, the results of the studies were mixed. It is emphasized the need to focus on situations and not on participants involved in petty corruption when forming anti-corruption measures. Rather than wishing for "more honest" officials or favouring stricter controls and fines or higher wages as solutions to corruption, the analytical results point to the importance of reducing the number of situations in which corruption is most likely to turn into corruption.

Plato’s Timaeus suggests two types of responses to consonances: the perception of consonance results in pleasure (ἡδονή) for fools, but delight (εὐφροσύνη) for the intelligent (80b5-8). By investigating the physical and psychological mechanisms of perception and hearing in the Timaeus, this paper argues that the pleasure and pain taken in auditory perception operate analogously to the pleasure and pain of other sensory modalities. Accordingly, the fools’ pleasure is (merely)a non-localized aesthetic pleasure of the mortal soul. Nevertheless, aesthesis of sounding material must be present to the intelligent individual in order for delight to arise: delight results from the correct perception of a sensory object as a mimesis of divine order.

Introduction Emotional regulation appears to be a key factor in self-injury. But body image also may play an important role in self-harming. Objectives Analysis of the relationship between non-suicidal self-injurious behavior and various aspects of body representation and body perception in adolescents and young women suffering from depression. Methods The study involved 85 women with endogenous depression. The answer to the question “Sometimes I purposely injure myself” was used as an indicator of self-harm. The methods include: SCL-90-R, Body Investment Scale (BIS), Physical Appearance Comparison Scale-Revised (PACS-R), Body Satisfaction Scale (BSS), Cambridge Depersonalization Scale (CDS). Results The relationship between self-injurious behavior and emotional, cognitive and behavioral characteristics of the self-body perception was revealed: more negative body image - dissatisfaction with its parts and the whole body (correlation with BSS_head ,238*, BSS_body ,472**, BSS_total_score ,453**), which is accompanied by behavioral manifestations - reduced “Protection” (correlation with BIS -,281**), higher rates of self-surveillance and comparisons of the self-body with others (PACS-R ,323**), depersonalization (CDS ,301**), body dissociation (CDS ABE ,346**), somatization (SCL-90-R ,226*). Conclusions For young women with depression, it has been shown that when self-harming, the self-body is “devalued”, perceived as “bad,” and the need to protect it is ignored. The severity of self-harm directly correlates with the phenomena of somatopsychic depersonalization. The results obtained may indicate that rejection of the self-body, “alienated” attitude and deprivation of the body of “subjectivity” can contribute to its use as a tool for solving psychological problems, which is a risk factor for the development, consolidation and aggravation of self-injurious behavior. The article examines the relationship between self-assessment of human greed and assessment of the greed of the others. It has been shown that young people's perceptions of greed are ambivalent: greed is described as a defect, something bad that makes a person vulnerable, lowers his/her self-esteem, causes trouble, prevents him/her from living a full life and reduces the ability to acquire what is desired. On the other hand, young people pay attention to the fact that due to their greed they are careful about their own funds, control costs and consolidate resources for large purchases. The greed of others is also ambiguous: it can be an obstacle to satisfying the desires of young people, or it can be one that does not affect their goals achievements. The greed of the others is an obstacle to satisfying the desires of young people, achieving their goals. The assessment of the others' greed varied depending on the degree of these people intimacy. The characteristics of relatives, friends, people who they study or work with, were similar to the data obtained in the self-assessment of greed. However, when assessing the greed of the people who run the city and the country, the subjects attributed to them a higher degree of greed. The positive connection between the assessment of one's own greed and the assessment of the greed of relatives, friends and colleagues is determined. No significant relationship was found between the assessment of one's own greed and the greed of the people who run a city or country.

The article is devoted to the problem of a psychological component of crimes pre-trial investigation. The factors of negative impact of circumstances and consequences of illegal actions on the psyche of participants of criminal proceedings are considered. The need to use knowledge of psychological phenomena and processes in the course of crime investigation by investigators is substantiated. The activities of investigator are characterized by significant emotional intensity. Taking into account full complexity of investigative activities encompassing a variety of interpersonal interactions, special attention is paid to the issue of psychological training of law enforcement agencies. Long-term perception of antisocial phenomena and communication with representatives of different social classes under conditions of time pressure and strict procedural regulation by investigator can result in increased mental stress in investigator and, as a result, in professional deformation. The investigator, being under the influence of negative emotions, must be able to maintain emotional stability. In this regard, the intellectual, volitional and communicative personal qualities of an investigator are particularly important. Keeping in touch with other participants of criminal proceedings, an investigator must maintain rationalism and composure, avoid formalism and bias. The purpose of such communication is to obtain information contributing to the establishment of truth on a specific criminal proceeding. The main task of an investigator in this process is to establish psychological contact with the use of psychological influence methods.

Left-handed is a characteristic of individual typological features of a person. At the present stage of society, solving a number of psychological problems in the traditional educational process, it is important to investigate psychophysiological peculiarities and specificity of causes of the laterality pattern’s formation in junior schoolchildren. Children with a left-sided profile are not a homogeneous group. Among the causes of left-handedness are the following: heredity or genetic left-handedness (as an individual congenital characteristic), pathological or compensatory (as a result of the compensation mechanism), forced or acquired (as a result of injury to the right hand or retraining). Recent studies describe how left-handers differ greatly from right-handed schoolchildren in their mental development, world’s perception, prevailing thinking strategies and specificity of emotional-affective expression. The reasons for this are manifold. However, the key factor is the inextricable and intimate connection of the left-handedness and the hemispheric dominance that leads to a specific functional organization, of the brain work. This means that the left-handed brain works and complies by some other rules in comparison with right-handed people. As a result they have some educational peculiarities and difficulties. In most cases, these children have difficulties in mastering oral and written language skills, numeracy and mathematical operations. A characteristic feature of left-handers is the insufficient and specific development of visual perception, which normally creates the basis for mastering reading and writing. Unfortunately children with left handedness do not receive adequate assistance in school, since education and upbringing are focused on right handed people. It is also shown that «traditional» retraining in early childhood can lead to distress, which has a negative impact on the children. Therefore, it is necessary to include in the educational process special methods and techniques. Thus it will be a favorable condition for their harmonious personal and intellectual development and effective mastering of various modules of the school curriculum. This article presents a theoretical model analysis of the causes and consequences of the development of sinistrality, briefly considered the psychological characteristics of left-handed children.

Methods: Early prostate cancer patients and healthy controls were prospectively recruited through convenience sampling. Participants filled questionnaires of demographic, illness perception (IPQ-R), QOL (MOS SF-36) and anxiety and depression (HADS). We compared the illness perception, QOL and psychological distress between patients and healthy controls. Results: 51 early prostate cancer patients and 65 healthy men controls were included. Median age was 69. Patients and healthy participants differed in illness perception ['consequences' (p<.001), 'emotional representations' (p<.001)] and psychological distress (p<.01). There was a correlation between the patient illness perception and QOL (p<.05) and psychological distress (p<.05). Among patients, the correlation between psychological distress and QOL was mediated by illness perception (p<.05), while it was not among controls. Conclusions: Diagnosis of early prostate cancer may have a psychological impact. Among early prostate cancer patients, a correlation may exist between illness perception, and quality of life (QOL) and psychological distress. Our results emphasize the need to identify patient distress and to implement therapeutic interventions also in a disease which usually is associated with a good prognosis.

The present study aimed to investigate the perception of risk in the Brazilian population related to electric and magnetic fields. Six hundred adults were recruited from the surrounding communities. Three hundred of them lived in large cities and an equal number lived in small towns. A short questionnaire was constructed to assess risk perception, trust in government to control risk exposure, level of comfort with exposure to extra-low-frequency electromagnetic fields, measures perceived as necessary to reduce emotional discomfort, and trust in the regulatory agencies. The Lipp Inventory of Stress Symptoms for Adults was applied to assess stress levels. Findings indicate that the majority of the participants in this study did not trust the Government to provide protective measures from exposure to electric and magnetic fields, did not trust the regulatory agencies, felt that there is no adequate risk control and thought about it frequently, and some felt that line installations were being performed in excess and that this should be stopped. Results endorse the need for risk education and indicate that risk perception and feelings should be considered before starting new line installations. Risk communication should incorporate knowledge regarding social cognition since a large proportion of the people were concerned about electric and magnetic fields. Lack of communication can lead to a rejection of necessary transmission line installation, and to unnecessary or exaggerated fear.

Flavor is perceived through two human senses simultaneously: the sense of taste, operating in the mouth, mainly in the tongue, and the sense of smell in the nostrils, where aromas are detected. The stimuli responsible for aroma perception are volatile compounds; their nature and properties as well as the mechanisms of perception have been widely studied. This is not the case for the taste stimuli, consisting of non-volatile compounds responsible for the accepted four basic taste sensations: sweet, sour, salty and bitter. The available information on taste perception is almost exclusively dedicated to sweet taste for obvious economic and nutritional reasons. In this paper, the present knowledge on the nature of the taste stimuli, on the mechanisms of their perception and on the interactions among them is reviewed. The effects of interactions with other sensory attributes (aroma, color, texture) are also reviewed. Interactions may be due to different causes: physical and chemical interactions among food components, competition at the receptor site, changes in the neurophysiological signal, and changes in the psychological response. Food aromas, as part of the flavor sensation, exert their influ ence on taste perception, as taste compounds affect aroma perception. Color may also modify the perception of a particular taste, but very few studies have been dedicated to this effect. On the other hand, the influence of texture (viscosity, consistency, hardness) mainly on the sweet taste has been extensively studied. Some contradictory results on how texture affects sweet or other tastes are still not satisfactorily explained. The study of these effects has been intensified in the last years, mainly because they are an important aspect of the flavor release phenomenon, so decisive for optimization of formulated foods.

AbstractBackground:This correlational study explored the psychosocial aspects related to eating behavior in different age samples of adolescents in treatment from 0 to 60 months at the Clinic of Orthodontics and Dentistry of Messina, Messina, Italy. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between psychosocial impact, levels of self-esteem, and the possible connection with eating habits of adolescents under orthodontic treatment.Methods:Sixty-one adolescents, aged between 12 and 22 years (mean=15.6±2.8) participated to the study. Each adolescents was interviewed with the Eating Attitudes Test, the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale, and the Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire. Results:Data did not show a direct connection between eating disorder and dental aesthetics, nevertheless, adolescents under orthodontic treatment, especially in the earliest phase of wearing braces, showed peculiar eating habits and underwent a higher psychological impact of dental aesthetics. Eating behaviors are strictly linked to global self-esteem. The processing of the results was made through the Student’s t-test and using Pearson’s correlation analysis. Conclusion:Increased knowledge of the psychological aspects involved in orthodontic treatment compliance may have positive effects in the relationship between adolescent patients and orthodontists. More attention should be paid to aspects that are often underestimated in clinical practice, thus, influencing the outcome of treatment and patient satisfaction, not only in terms of dental health, but also of mental health.

The relevance of the issue is accounted for by the growing number of the unemployed in modern society, which is triggered off by the economic and epidemiological crisis, the discrepancy between unemployed citizens’ want of social and psychological support and the fact that the theoretical and applied aspects of the issue are underdeveloped and specialists who are expected to provide support provide information services instead. The article presents the results of a theoretical analysis of unemployed citizens’ psychological characteristics. The analysis is conducted to estimate social and psychological support required to help unemployed people to successfully adapt to the changing conditions of life associated with employment loss and job search. The article shows that people who have lost employment are subject to dismay, anxiety, depression, low level of self-acceptance and acceptance of others, emotional discomfort, and internality. There are some factors that hinder unemployed people’s adaptation to the new conditions of life. These factors are extreme anxiety and low stress resilience, psycasthenic, unstable, and hyperthymic forms of accentuation. The factors that can improve one’s adaptability are stress resilience, optimism, active life style, communicability, internal locus of control, emotional liability, positive perception of self, positive attributional style, etc. The article discusses neurotic and constructive behavioral patterns in situations of job loss. It also deals with successful and unsuccessful, optimistic and pessimistic types of unemployed people. The analysis of the abovementioned factors enables the authors of the article to identify the major aspects of social and psychological support unemployed people need. It also enables the authors to elaborate strategies of psychological correction and employment assistance, such as the identification of factors that hinder one’s adaptation to the new conditions of life and the elaboration of strategies that will improve people’s adaptability skills. The article maintains that in order to improve the quality of social and psychological services rendered by specialists working with the unemployed and to ensure that all unemployed citizens get the required social and psychological support, it is essential to examine unemployed people’s psychological characteristics.

The results of genetic research have a remarkable role in medicine progress. At the same time the issues of prevention, individual attitudes and behaviour have acquired more importance, not only in relation to the illness but also regarding one's health. For these reasons is important to consider this field of study and intervention as an area to face, not only from the medical point of view but also from ethical and psychological ones. If we agree on the importance of a global approach to this problem, psychosocial support, which is often considered a parallel intervention, becomes a component of genetic counselling: the focal point of the intervention becomes the person, and not only the problem. The literature of the last years is rich of studies that have deepened these themes. Some studies have been analysed and reported but it is not easy to individualise a common patrimony of knowledge. Some aspects as information, communication, risk perception and psychological consequences are presented and discussed in this paper.

e20657 Background: In a previous study (Gercovich et al., 2011) we found that several dimensions of Illness Perception predicted some aspects of Quality of Life. The present study introduces Psychological Distress as a variable to assess the modulatory role it plays in the association between Illness Perception dimensions and Quality of Life in patients with breast cancer, identifying which of these two variables explain further variability in the different aspects of Quality of Life. Methods: A cohort of seventy-five patients was evaluated with the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-30). We calculated bivariate and partial correlations to evaluate the associations between the illness perception dimensions and different aspects of quality of life, controlling these associations by the psychological distress measure. Subsequently, we performed linear regression analysis to evaluate which of these two variables better explains the variability in the quality of life scores. Results: Although significant associations between subscales of perception of illness and quality of life were found, most of them lost their significance when controlled by distress. In the regression models, variables that predicted the variability in the quality of life best were psychopathological diagnostic and distress. Conclusions: According to the study results, psychological distress and psychopathological diagnostic were the two variables that better explained the variability in the quality of life. For this reason it is essential to learn more about the role these variables play on the quality of life and on the morbidity and mortality associated to them.

Understanding the causes of obesity epidemic requires examination of what contributes to preference of palatable foods. Using a sensorial-consumer approach, this research examined the relationship between the sensation of the hedonic liking of fat with psychological and weight profiles. The study began with preliminary testing of the hedonic ratings of 24 food items (12 low fat (LF), 12 high fat(HF)) and completion of the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-R18) investigating cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating and emotional eating aspects. Eight (8) out of the twelve (12) food pairs that had discriminating characteristics were selected, for inclusion in the study, by 347 panellists. Results showed that overweight individuals had significantly lower liking towards LF sensation (4.27±2.13, p= 0.001) but significantly higher liking towards HF sensation (5.26±2.33, p= 0.001), compared to normal BMI individuals who had a significantly higher liking towards LF sensation (5.69±2.35, p= 0.001) but significantly lower liking towards HF sensation (4.17±2.40, p= 0.001). The Pearson product-moment correlation revealed similar trends on the association between liking of fat sensation and eating behaviour regardless of weight statuses. Specifically, cognitive restrainers were found to prefer the LF sensation while HF sensation were more favoured among uncontrolled and emotional eaters. This highlights the importance of investigating the combined effect of psychological aspects of eating behaviour and weight profiles towards liking of fat sensation.

The purpose of the article is to identify psychological aspects of preventing corruption in the professional activities of public servants by analyzing the main motives of systemic corruption behavior and socio-cultural aspects of their formation. It is revealed that research on the motives of corruption behavior is associated with several important factors: 1) the stereotypes of understanding of the corruption existing in the Ukrainian society; 2) social factors of corruption behavior - historical, economic, political, cultural, collective-psychological and individual psychological; 3) socio-cultural aspects of the formation of anticorruption consciousness. There are several motives of corruption behavior: game, social, monetary etc. This is due to the existence of the most common frames of mass consciousness, which are recorded in the Ukrainian society regarding the perception of corruption. The determining factors of the occurrence of corruption behavior in the professional activities of public servants are the psychological dependencies of the person, which leads to the use of the concept of psychological research.Corruptive behavior is defined as deviant one and causes the perception of the responsibilities of the public service as an opportunity to obtain satisfaction from the prospect of receiving unlawful benefits and privileges for violating official moral and ethical requirements (the formation of dependence). The types of psychological dependencies of public servants (on power, money, etc.) are distinguished. It is shown that a painful manifestation of such a person’s psychological dependency is kleptomania. In order to prevent corruption in the professional activities of public servants, it is proposed to apply scientifically substantiated psychological and diagnostic support, in particular special methods for determining the propensity for kleptomania and corruption behavior.

The article deals with the problem of the relationship of adult children to their parents. The study consisted of two parts. The purpose of the first part was to obtain the most complete picture of the possible aspects of the relationship of adult children to their parents without taking into account the prevailing options. The research method was a series of slightly structured interviews. With the help of a qualitative analysis of the conducted slightly structured interviews, generalized categories describing different aspects of the relationship of adult children to their parents are identified. Based on the data obtained, a questionnaire was compiled, which was used in the second part of the study. The questionnaire was filled out by 146 respondents. The results were analyzed using factor analysis. There are 8 factors that characterize the subjective perceptions of adult children about their attitude to their parents: the relationship of love and a sense of comfort; caring with problems of compliance with parental expectations; insults and claims; criticism; emphasizing the importance of relationships with grandparents; custody is down to parents; emotional dependence with separation problems, as well as the perception of parents as a model and a model. The novelty of this study was the development of a questionnaire using the method of a slightly structured interview, which made it possible to identify a number of significant aspects of these relationships when considering the relationship of adult children to their parents

The current study aims to evaluate the technical and psychological aspects of performance indicators development process of the local government. The technical aspect evaluation was done by implementing logic model analysis procedures and adopting a four-quadrant analysis approach. The psychological aspect analysis was conducted by examining the motivational factors taken from the perspective of Institutional Theory for determining individual behavior in developing performance indicators in governmental organizations. The results show that there is a discrepancy in the number of performance indicators presented in the planning and performance reporting documents, as well as an absence of logical relationships among them. Psychologically, the quality of Klungkung’s performance indicators development is determined by the perception of the performance indicators matrix difficulty, the perceived usefulness of technical training, the level of top management commitment, the assertiveness enforcement of the regulations, and the existence of social pressure and pressure on professionalism. It can be implied that technical policies need to be formulated by local government organizations.

The proper means of measuring quality of life in chronically ill patients is unclear. Because different measures may assess varied aspects of patients' experience and because they may be interrelated in different ways, the relationship between several of these quality-of-life measures, including indices of psychological well-being, social support, and severity of illness in ESRD patients treated with hemodialysis (HD), was prospectively assessed. In addition, it was determined whether patients' assessment of quality of life, along any dimension, was related to patient compliance in three urban HD units, in a population largely composed of African-American patients. Severity of illness scores correlated with both attendance and compliance with the dialysis prescription. Karnofsky scores correlated inversely with age, depression, social environment, and level of severity of illness, as expected, but not with behavioral compliance measures. Social support scores correlated with perception of illness, depression, satisfaction with life, and adjustment to illness scores, but not with behavioral or standard compliance measures. Perception of illness scores correlated with depression, social support, adjustment to illness, and satisfaction with life scores, but not with Karnofsky ratings, severity scores, or standard and/or behavioral compliance measures. Social environment scores correlated with almost all assessed variables, with the exception of anthropometric measurements, predialysis phosphorus levels, and behavioral compliance measures. Satisfaction with life scores (a global, subjective measure of quality of life) correlated with advancing age, level of social support, severity of illness, and the presence of a relationship, but were not correlated with Karnofsky scores. These data suggest that quality of life in patients treated with HD must be measured in several ways. The Psychological Adjustment to Illness Scale Social Environment score may be a useful, generalizable adjunct measure of quality of life in HD patients, in addition to the Satisfaction With Life Scale. Quality of life and perception of the effects of illness are not necessarily associated with functional ability in HD patients. These findings must be considered where making decisions about the discontinuation of HD treatment.

The diagnosis of melanoma and breast cancer may impact many aspects of life with significant reductions in emotional functioning and quality of life. The aim of the study was to analyze the emotional traits of female patients with oncological in early-stage diagnosis, investigating predictors for psychological distress and analyzing body image perception. An observational study was conducted, A sample of 84 female cancer patients (age range 30–55 years) with melanoma (n = 42) and breast cancer diagnosis (n = 42). The examined emotional variables were psychological distress; depression, stress, and anxiety; metacognitions; and body self-perception. Findings showed higher psychological distress in breast cancer than in melanoma patients (p = 0.00), which was related to lower positive self-perception of body image (p = 0.03). Furthermore, psychological distress was negatively correlated with consequences of clinical treatment on body image, and low well-being affected the social interaction and well-being with own body. There was no significant difference between cancer staging and timing from diagnosis. Prevention and therapeutic psychological protocols might be adapted and tailored to the unmet needs of the patients in medical treatments to promote and enhance the Quality of Life in survivorship.
