Context: vitiligo with a unique location in the penis is a rare entity. Presentation of the case: A 34-year-old man who presented himself in our training, he complained of a whitish plaque on his penis. The physical examination showed an achromic macule on the level of the penis, with a catch of contrast in light of Wood. A skin biopsy of the dorsal surface of the penis showed a total absence of melanocytes and melanin granules in the basal layer.

ABSTRACT Activation of the mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV) promoter by the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) is associated with a chromatin structural transition in the B nucleosome region of the viral long terminal repeat (LTR). Recent evidence indicates that this transition extends upstream of the B nucleosome, encompassing a region larger than a single nucleosome (G. Fragoso, W. D. Pennie, S. John, and G. L. Hager, Mol. Cell. Biol. 18:3633–3644). We have reconstituted MMTV LTR DNA into a polynucleosome array using Drosophila embryo extracts. We show binding of purified GR to specific GR elements within a large, multinucleosome array and describe a GR-induced nucleoprotein transition that is dependent on ATP and a HeLa nuclear extract. Previously uncharacterized GR binding sites in the upstream C nucleosome region are involved in the extended region of chromatin remodeling. We also show that GR-dependent chromatin remodeling is a multistep process; in the absence of ATP, GR binds to multiple sites on the chromatin array and prevents restriction enzyme access to recognition sites. Upon addition of ATP, GR induces remodeling and a large increase in access to enzymes sites within the transition region. These findings suggest a dynamic model in which GR first binds to chromatin after ligand activation, recruits a remodeling activity, and is then lost from the template. This model is consistent with the recent description of a “hit-and-run” mechanism for GR action in living cells (J. G. McNally, W. G. Müller, D. Walker, and G. L. Hager, Science 287:1262–1264, 2000).

Paul valery a note chaque jour dans ses cahiers - parmi d'autres sujets - ses reflexions sur le fonctionnement de la pensee humaine ; cette reflexion inclut tous les aspects de la pensee (perception, raisonnement, memoire, sentiments, etc. ). Selon lui, l'ensemble des proprietes de la pensee pouvait etre represente par ce qu'il appelle son << systeme >>. Pour mettre sur pied ce systeme, valery s'est inspire des concepts et du vocabulaire des sciences les plus avancees de la fin du xixeme siecle (electromagnetisme, thermodynamique, algebre et topologie). Ses reflexions s'etendent sur 27. 000 pages manuscrites composees de remarques generalement tres breves (d'une phrase a une ou deux pages) sans suite ni organisation apparentes. Minimum dropout age (MDA) laws have been touted as effective policies to bring delinquents off streets and into classrooms. These laws work mainly through incapacitating delinquents by decreasing the number of unsupervised hours available to commit crime. Given that these laws constrain delinquent juveniles, one question to better understand the costs and benefits of these laws is: to what extent do MDA laws displace crime from streets to schools? Answering this question may be valuable given that in-school crime affects education production through creating a negative and unsafe learning environment, which may lead to decreases in student achievement. This research extends the sparse research on in-school crime by studying how MDA laws affect crimes committed in U.S. public high schools. The analysis is conducted using a difference-in-difference estimator exploiting variation between state-level MDA laws over time. The results indicate that a MDA of 18 significantly increases in-school crime. Specifically, attacks without a weapon, threats without a weapon, and drug incidences. A MDA of 17 is found to have no effect on in-school crime.

The present work analyses the phaenomenon of homophobia in the framework of criminal law, starting from an inquiry concerning the psychosocial and criminological origin of the prejudice toward LGBT people. In particular, the phaenomenon is explored within the context of complex interactions among groups where a pivotal role is covered by gender prejudices and by sex hierarchies in which sexism, heterosexism and hetero-normativism in male-dominated cultures are rooted. The analysis goes on by contextualizing homophobia within the Anglo-American criminological categories “hate crime” and “hate speech”, according to an interpretation that considers them as conducts which may potentially represent the seeds of genocide-related events and are therefore to be contrasted by criminal law per se as well as in a preventative fashion. On these basis, the study moves on to consider a set of juridical criticalities related to the endorsement of prejudice into criminal law provisions as a relevant element for aggravated sanctions. Furthermore the research analyses the most relevant provisions criminalizing hate crimes and hate speeches existing under the German legal system to sanction behaviours characterized by homophobia (§ 130 StGB, Volksverhetzung and the recently modified § 46 StGB, that sets out the criteria for setting the punishment); with reference to the Italian legal system, the so called “Legge Reale-Mancino” is analysed as the law on which basis hate crimes and hate speeches are mainly punished. Finally, in this context, the study will provide an analysis of the so called “DDL Scalfarotto” – the draft bill approved by only one of the two Italian legislative chambers and therefore not entered into force yet – which is going to modify the Legge Reale-Mancino by introducing homophobic and transphobic motives as further basis for applying the said law.

Mineralisation in the South Pennine MVT orefield (225km2) has resulted from the combined effects of basement structure, stress history and basin evolution during the Carboniferous. NW-SE-trending Caledonian thrusts in the basement beneath North Derbyshire were reactivated as normal growth faults during limestone sedimentation in the Dinantian. on a regional scale, a major low-angle detachment, dipping NE away from St. George's Land (20km to the SW of North Derbyshire), controlled basin development as far as the Askern-Spital High (100km to the NE). The North Derbyshire shelf developed on the up-dip crest of a NE-tilted half-graben, in the hanging wall of this detachment, directly above the zone of mantle upwelling. A similar structure also evolved in the Rotherham area, some 40km to the NE, where, it is inferred, another orefield exists in the subsurface. In North Derbyshire, the end of the Dinantian was a period of uplift and erosion. In the NE part of the shelf, dextral wrench faults developed above ENE-WSW-trending basement fractures. At the start of the Namurian the direction of extension rotated to NW-SE and by the end of the Westphalian the limestone was buried to a depth of about 2km (~130°C) due to the combined effects of thermal sag and sediment compaction. Mineralisation began in the early Stephanian, associated with a period of N-S extension. Fractures in the limestone formed during earlier tectonic events began to dilate, thus allowing inflow of acidic F-Ba-Pb-zn-S-enriched fluid expelled from overlying Namurian shales. This was replenished by meteoric water migrating westwards down-dip from the uplifted Askern-Spital-Nocton-Grantham High. Ore deposition occurred within the limestone as a result of increasing pH, Ca 2+ and SO42 in the orefluid due to wallrock dissolution and fluid mixing. Mineralisation probably continues in the subsurface for some distance to the SE of the South Pennine orefield in shallow-water limestones with a similar structural aspect to those exposed in North Derbyshire.

The parishes of Edmundbyers and Muggleswick in the valley of the River Derwent on the borders of Northumberland and Durham have been relatively neglected archaeologically until recently. Historically they are linked because they formed a mediaeval estate which belonged to Durham Cathedral Priory before the Dissolution of the Monasteries. This thesis investigates certain of the changes that have taken place in the landscape of the parishes and the factors that have contributed to them, making comparisons with other parts of Britain to set the conclusions in context. Landscape archaeology theory is outlined, as well as topographical details and an account of the local history. The latter includes an examination of local place names which support the evidence of the development of the parishes. Three important influences on the landscape are discussed and assessed. Firstly climate and climate change, with the influences of famine and disease, are investigated. The effects of these factors on the landscape and, especially, the possible desertion of farms are also examined. Enclosure and improvement, particularly local but with comparisons to the country as a whole, are discussed. Fields and agricultural systems are particularly studies and provide evidence of landscape changes in the study parishes. The discovery of older boundaries within some of the fields is of especial interest. Communication systems, such as roads, can be the route by which the necessary knowledge for improvement is spread. The analysis of the development of communications in the study area demonstrates this. Some significant ancient routes and alterations to routes have been discovered. This research has contributed a great deal of information to the understanding of the development of the landscape in the Upper Derwent Valley. It has also shown that even a limited area such as this has potential for further investigation.

Global illumination is an important area of computer graphics, having direct applications in architectural visualization, lighting design and entertainment. Indirect illumination effects such as soft shadows, color bleeding, caustics and glossy reflections provide essential visual information about the interaction of different regions of the environment. Global illumination is a research area that deals with these illumination effects. Interactivity is also a desirable feature for many computer graphics applications, especially with unrestricted manipulation of the environment and lighting conditions. However, the design of methods that can handle both unrestricted interactivity and global illumination effects on environments of reasonable complexity is still an open challenge.

We present a new formulation of the light transport equation, called pencil light transport, that makes progress towards this goal by exploiting graphics hardware rendering features. The proposed method performs the transport of radiance over a scene using sets of pencils. A pencil object consists of a center of projection and some associated directional data. We show that performing the radiance transport using pencils is suitable for implementation on current graphics hardware. The new algorithm exploits optimized operations available in the graphics hardware architecture, such as pinhole camera rendering of opaque triangles and texture mapping. We show how the light transport equation can be reformulated as a sequence of light transports between pencils and define a new light transport operator, called the pencil light transport operator, that is used to transfer radiance between sets of pencils.

Syftet med den här studien är att undersöka hur de fyra förskollärarna som medverkar i studien använder sig av dokumentation och hur den gestaltar sig i verksamheten. Vi vill i den här studien undersöka vad förskollärarnas barnsyn har för inverkan på dokumentationen i förskolan. Detta studeras utifrån begreppen barnsyn, ”det kompetenta barnet”, barns perspektiv och barnperspektiv.Studien bygger på en kvalitativ metod för att belysa förskollärarnas tankar och erfarenheter om dokumentation. Metoderna som användes för att komma fram till ett resultat var formella intervjuer, fotodokumentationer samt walk and talk intervju. Studien visar att de deltagande förskollärarna upplever att dokumentationen är ett bra redskap att använda sig av för att synliggöra barnens lärprocesser samt utveckla förskolans verksamhet. Samtliga förskollärares tankar om vad och varför de dokumenterar är väldigt lika, dock anser förskollärarna att tiden inte riktigt räcker till för all dokumentation de skulle önska att göra. Resultatet visar att gestaltningen av dokumentationen ser olika ut på förskolorna och att och mängden dokumentationer i verksamheten skiljer sig åt. Det dokumenteras på olika sätt, två av förskolorna lägger fokus på Instagram där föräldrar och barn hemma kan samtala kring olika händelser i förskolan. De andra två förskolorna dokumenterade mest i verksamhetens lokaler där dokumentationen mest är synlig för barnen.

Un’immagine dell’abuso del diritto è quella del fuoco sotto la cenere perché esprime il pericolo al quale espone legalità e colpevolezza. Sebbene l’ermeneutica penalistica sia vincolata, la materia tributaria rappresenta l’ultimo caso in cui forza normativa dei principi ed interpretazione teleologica hanno consentito incriminazioni in malam partem. Nemmeno la rilevanza costituzionale del bene consente di incriminare l’elusione oltre la riserva di legge: al giudice è vietato “creare un regime legale penale, in luogo di quello realizzato dalla legge”. Il tema delle infrazioni di origine giurisprudenziale introduce una seconda accezione di legalità come concepita dall’art. 7 CEDU: la norma incriminatrice è valida allorquando - prescindendo dalla fonte - sia accessibile e prevedibile. Di fronte alla sentenza “Dolce e Gabbana” può affermarsi che incriminare l’elusione non è conforme alla legalità costituzionale, perché la commistione tra evasione ed elusione fiscale modifica il tipo in via interpretativa, né convenzionale perché le conseguenze non erano prevedibili quando furono realizzate le operazioni elusive. L’antagonismo delle concezioni di legalità trova soluzione avuto riguardo ai fini di garanzia. Se è contrario alla Costituzione accogliere un’idea di legalità-prevedibilità che prescinda dalla riserva di legge, la finalità di maggior garanzia possibile, esplicitata all’art. 53 della CEDU, non consente alternative alla sinergia: la legalità convenzionale sarà più garantista se integra quella costituzionale. La trasposizione sul piano interno della prevedibilità rileva sul distinto piano della colpevolezza, trova aggancio all’art. 5 c.p. e sposta la questione sulla conoscibilità dell’illecito. Alla rilevanza penale dell’abuso del diritto in materia tributaria ostava anche il principio di colpevolezza non potendosi muovere un rimprovero a fronte di un’ignoranza scusabile. L’affermata irrilevanza penale avrebbe dovuto spegnere definitivamente il fuoco dell’abuso del diritto, se non che alcune posizioni favorevoli al recupero in chiave di artificio espongono ancora il principio di legalità al pericolo di un fuoco sotto la cenere.
Metaphorically speaking, the relationship between criminal liability and abuse of law may be described as a flame beneath ashes. In summary, a punishment based on the abuse of law is not consistent with the principle of legality recognized by the Italian Constitution: according to the Article 25, paragraph 2, in fact, no one may be punished except on the basis of a law enacted by the Parliament. Nevertheless, an infringement of the constitutional principle of legality occurred in the Dolce & Gabbana case where a criminal conviction for tax avoidance was pronounced by the Criminal Courts. In the lack of an express provision punishing tax avoidance, only tax evasion may be punished under Italian criminal law. Moreover, the punishment for tax avoidance was not foreseeable according to the principle of legality enshrined in Article 7 of the ECHR due to the fact that prior to the “Dolce & Gabbana” case tax avoidance was not qualified as an offence in the Italian case-law.

In this paper, the modelling of leakages through a compressor stator penny cavity, and their effect on the aerodynamics within the compressor are studied. The penny, sometimes also referred to as ‘button’, is the cylindrical platform feature of a variable stator normally found between a vane’s airfoil and spindle. The pennies nominally lie recessed into the compressor endwalls at hub and casing, with a surrounding clearance to ensure the vane’s stagger angle can be adjusted. RANS-simulations, with these clearances included, have shown a significant impact from the penny cavity leakages on compressor efficiency and surge line. Neglecting this secondary flow path through the penny cavities results in an under prediction of the losses close to the endwalls. The prediction of the penny cavity effect on the stator row is based on a Reynolds-Averaged-Navier-Stokes (RANS) study, using a hybrid structured-unstructured mesh to provide adequate resolution of the local flow phenomena. The complex geometry and pressure field result in flows that are unevenly distributed within the penny cavity. The outflow or leakage is focused in a concentrated area leading to a high local velocity that strongly impacts the stator losses and turning. Since such geometries lie beyond the normal validated cases, the modelling uncertainties are discussed and the plausibility of the results is checked. In order to provide an experimental database and validate the turbulent mixing of leakage and main flow, which is seen as the main contributor to loss production, a validation test case — ‘Jet-In-Crossflow’ was chosen. As well as the standard RANS code, this validation case was run as a time-accurate high-order Lattice Boltzmann (LBM) simulation (PowerFLOW), using Very-Large-Eddy-Simulation (VLES) turbulence modelling. The LBM simulation showed significant unsteady flow features and was considerably closer to the test data than the RANS calculations. A future test campaign, currently being prepared at the annular cascade test facility of the Institute of Jet Propulsion and Turbomachinery (IST) at RWTH Aachen university, will be briefly presented. This focuses on investigating the penny flows in a typical engine design.

Hypospadias is a developmental abnormality in which the male urethra opens on the underside of the penis or on the perineum and can be accompanied by penile aplasia or hypoplasia, hypoplasia of the corpus cavernosum, incomplete formation of the prepuce, or cryptorchidism [1]. In animals, it rarely appears in horses, sheep, goats, cattle, dogs, and cats as isolated cases with urogenital anomaly or with other abnormalities [2,3]. The aim of this paper is to present the hystological results in a crossbred calf seen with anterior hypospadias with syndromic evolution. Clinically, the penile urethra ventrally opened at approximately 4 cm caudal of the normal opening of the urethra, also, the prepuce was incompletely developed and had failed to fuse normally. The Hematoxylin-Eosin method was used for hystological examination of the urethra. Microscopically, the urethra wall was composed of mucosa with epithelium and lamina propria, vascular layer, thin muscle layer, and adventitia, a lax connective tissue. The formation that should be the corpus cavernosum was separated from the body of the corpus spongiosum and urethra. In the center of the structure there was a connective tissue strand made of converging trabeculae. However, between the trabeculae, where the cavernous spaces should be, there was an abundance of monolocular adipocytes. In conclusion, histological examination revealed the normal structure of the urethra with adipose degeneration into the corpus cavernosum.

The Trans Pennine Route Upgrade is a major, multi-billion-pound programme of railway improvements which will bring better journeys to passengers travelling across the Pennines between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York. As part of the scheme a new 350m long, four track viaduct is needed near the town of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.In addition to the sustainability benefits realised through transformational transport improvements, the design of the viaduct has focussed heavily on efficient and optimised design for both construction and operation and used wide ranging expertise to optimise the solution. This paper examines how an infrastructure investment policy, implemented nationwide at the local level, has affected local crime rates. This policy, developed in the wake of the global recession of 2008-09, was designed to boost local economies through job creation. Using monthly figures from the Spanish region of Catalonia's more than 900 municipalities, the paper exploits geographic and time variation in the Spanish Ministry of Public Administration's random approvals of local investment policies, to estimate their impact on both (un)employment and crime. The combination of difference-in-differences and IV estimates makes it possible to precisely assess both the size and timing of the policy's impact on the local labor market and on municipal-level crime rates. While the policy apparently did not tackle the economic recession over the long run, local public finances did experience a boost over the short term, resulting in a temporary reduction in local unemployment rates (as legally required by the policy), as well as a significant drop in crime rates.
