Let R anf T be rings, and let U be a faithful R-T-bimodule. We show that the triple (R, U, T) has a Morita duality if and only if RR and TT are linearly compact, and there is a duality between the semisimple factors R/J(R) and T/J(T) induced by the socle of U. The main tool to prove this result is proving that lattice anti-isomorphisms can be patched together provided the AB-5* condition is satisfied.

Potholes, one of the major types of distress on pavement surfaces, damage vehicles and are a safety hazard for the travelling public. In order to mitigate the effect of potholes, cold-mix asphalt (CMA) patching materials are commonly used for urgent repair of pavement surfaces before resurfacing can be undertaken. Therefore, the short-term (initial stability) and long-term (in-service durability) performance evaluation of CMA patching materials is necessary. This study conducted several curing conditions in the laboratory to investigate short-term, long-term, and moisture effects on pavement surfaces. Moreover, this study compared the Marshall stability of samples prepared under various compaction conditions. Marshall stability, Cantabro abrasion, and UK wheel tracking tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of CMA patching materials. The results indicated that the Marshall stability of dense-gradation (DG) CMA patching materials was higher than that of open-graded (OG) CMA patching materials and the Marshall stability of OG CMA patching materials was highly influenced by the coarse aggregate proportion. The DG and OG CMA patching materials exhibited comparable abrasion resistance, and the Cantabro abrasion ratio was highly correlated to the estimated asphalt film thickness for the OG CMA patching materials. A moisture indicator (MI) was proposed, and the effect of moisture damage on Marshall stability and Cantabro abrasion ratio was related to the proposed MI. The rutting resistance of the DG CMA patching materials was higher than that of the OG CMA patching materials, which is consistent with the Marshall stability result.

Amblyopia should be treated in early ages to have better outcomes. Stimulation of suppressed eye and depriving light stimulus to the good eye is the main principal of the amblyopia treatment. Adherence to the patching for the treatment of amblyopia in children remains challenging. This could be due to poor cooperation of child or ill-fitting patch. Younger children can be motivated to mimic cartoon figures to improve their adherence to patching. Amblyopia treatment is a team work of parents and optometrist who not only select the mode of management but improve the acceptance of child for patching. We present a child with mild anisometropia and hypermetropia-induced esotropia and amblyopia who was non-compliant to patching. An innovative idea by the parents using a Ninja Turtle patch on the prescribed spectacle was very well accepted by the child and both esotropia and amblyopia improved within four months of the patching treatment. The vision in the affected eye improved from 20/200 to 20/20 with refractive error correction and patching. We share this low-cost child-friendly patching technique that parents invented that can be used to improve adherence to patching by young children during amblyopia therapy. This parent’s innovation enabled to improve adherence and thus address amblyopia in patched eye and regain vision.

Worms can spread quickly through the network and infect large number of vulnerable hosts in the initial stage causing great loss. The worms are tested and revised for many times aiming at avoiding being detected and eliminated by the security products, and the security software cant be updated immediately for the reason that it costs time to build the new patching before the patching is released. However, the virtual patching strategy can protect the vulnerable hosts from the attacks of the worms before the security products release the new real patching. A new propagation model of worms with virtual patching strategy is thus proposed in this paper for the first time. Through the analysis of the corresponding worm propagation model, its stability condition of worm-free equilibrium point is obtained. And through the numerical analysis, the effectiveness of the virtual patching strategy is shown. This model is more consistent with the actual situation of the worm propagation, and the virtual patching strategy will provide a new insight into the modeling of computer virus propagation.

Multimedia streaming applications such as mobile conferencing, e-learning and mobile cinema are becoming popular for the Internet and mobile devices. Patching can enable a client to receive multicast streaming by listening to ongoing transmission of the same video clip in order to reduce retransmission from the media server. However, multimedia streams multicasting to clients must be stored in the client buffer in advance; most fractions of ongoing streaming frames are lost due to limited space. The authors first propose a patching cache scheduling algorithm to patch and cache the shared frames of the ongoing streams on cloud-based patching proxy servers. The patching proxy cloud is responsible for patching and caching streaming data and mobile devices in the same cloud share bandwidth and cooperatively stream video frames to distribute the load. The simulation results show that the proposed patching proxy cloud can efficiently improve the cache utility, decrease the user-perceived latency, and reduce the transmission overhead between the proxy and the original media server when a video clip is very popular.

To cope with evolving computer viruses, antivirus programs must be periodically updated. Due to the limited network bandwidth, new virus patches are typically injected into a small subset of network nodes and then forwarded to the remaining nodes. A static patching strategy consists of a fixed patch injection rate and a fixed patch forwarding rate. This paper focuses on evaluating the performance of a static patching strategy. First, we introduce a novel autonomous node-level virus-patch propagation model to characterize the effect of a static patching strategy. Second, we show that the model is globally attracting, implying that regardless of the initial expected state of the network, the expected fraction of the infected nodes converges to the same value. Therefore, we use the asymptotic expected fraction of the infected nodes as the measure of performance of a static patching strategy. On this basis, we evaluate the performances of a few static patching strategies. Finally, we examine the influences of a few parameters on the performance of a static patching strategy. Our findings provide a significant guidance for restraining malware propagation.

We extend field patching to the setting of Berkovich analytic geometry and use it to prove a local–global principle over function fields of analytic curves with respect to completions. In the context of quadratic forms, we combine it with sufficient conditions for local isotropy over a Berkovich curve to obtain applications on the $u$-invariant. The patching method we adapt was introduced by Harbater and Hartmann [Patching over fields, Israel J. Math. 176 (2010), 61–107] and further developed by these two authors and Krashen [Applications of patching to quadratic forms and central simple algebras, Invent. Math. 178 (2009), 231–263]. The results presented in this paper generalize those of Harbater, Hartmann, and Krashen [Applications of patching to quadratic forms and central simple algebras, Invent. The maintenance of potholes is a long-standing problem. Previous studies focused on pothole patching materials and methods but not on bonding at the interface joint. In this study, the influence of the patching shape and depth on the bonding at the interface joint using two patching materials: hot mix asphalt (HMA) and hot mix asphalt containing 5% (by volume) steel fiber (HMA+) was investigated. Slabs with circular and square potholes in the middle with different depths (35, 50 and 70 mm) were prepared. The two shapes of potholes were patched with two patching materials: HMA and HMA+, at different depths. The slabs were tested after patching using a rigid steel frame. The experimental results were compared with those obtained from finite element analysis using the ABAQUS software, applying the same model of slabs with the same dimensions and properties of the materials used. The results indicated that the bonding at joint interface for circular-patched potholes slightly improved using HMA+ and this was independent of patching depth. As for the square-patched potholes, the bonding at the interface joint was better than for the circular-patched ones; the bonding increased with increasing depth. Using HMA+ for patching the square-patched potholes, the bonding at the interface joint slightly increased, only for the 3.5 cm depth.

A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate preliminarily the efficacy of perceptual learning (PL) visual training in medium-term follow-up with a specific software (Amblyopia iNET, Home Therapy Systems Inc., Gold Canyon, AZ, USA) for visual acuity (VA) and contrast sensitivity (CS) recovering in a sample of 14 moderate to severe amblyopic subjects with a previously unsuccessful outcome or failure with patching (PL Group). This efficacy was compared with that achieved in a patching control group (13 subjects, Patching 2). At one-month follow-up, a significant VA improvement in the amblyopic eye (AE) was observed in both groups, with no significant differences between them. Additionally, CS was measured in PL Group and exhibited a significant improvement in the AE one month after the beginning of treatment for 3, 6, 12, and 18 cycles/º (p = 0.003). Both groups showed long-lasting retention of visual improvements. A combined therapy of PL-based visual training and patching seems to be effective for improving VA in children with amblyopia who did not recover vision with patching alone or had a poor patching compliance. This preliminary outcome should be confirmed in future clinical trials.

When the RC structure degraded in sea environment, chloride ion is one of the most important factors of degradation. Therefore, the purpose of this analytical study is measuring diffusion coefficient of patching repair material and the structure which repaired with patching repair material by RCPT. Also with this experimental result, Finite Element Method (FEM) is used for determining service year of building and concentration of chloride ion in the structure material. As the result of RCPT, diffusion coefficient of patching repair material is 0.44×10-8cm2/sec, which is 18.7% of concrete (3.18×10-8cm2/sec). Meanwhile, as the result of FEM, patching repair material is effective for prevent chloride ion. When service year of normal concrete structure is 16years, on the other hand, the structure recovered 10mm of patching repair material will take 49 years to its service year. Furthermore, the result derived from equation given from JSCE predicts service year of the structure is little bit less than FEM.

In this paper we consider the problem of `theory patching', in which we are given a domain theory, some of whose components are indicated to be possibly flawed, and a set of labeled training examples for the domain concept. The theory patching problem is to revise only the indicated components of the theory, such that the resulting theory correctly classifies all the training examples. Theory patching is thus a type of theory revision in which revisions are made to individual components of the theory. Our concern in this paper is to determine for which classes of logical domain theories the theory patching problem is tractable. We consider both propositional and first-order domain theories, and show that the theory patching problem is equivalent to that of determining what information contained in a theory is `stable' regardless of what revisions might be performed to the theory. We show that determining stability is tractable if the input theory satisfies two conditions: that revisions to each theory component have monotonic effects on the classification of examples, and that theory components act independently in the classification of examples in the theory. We also show how the concepts introduced can be used to determine the soundness and completeness of particular theory patching algorithms.

Full-depth patching is one of the commonly used asphalt pavement maintenance and rehabilitation methods in which deteriorated base and surface layers are repaired to restore strength and improve ride quality. During resurfacing projects, areas requiring full-depth patching are identified and quantified as construction priorities because of the high costs associated with the labor and materials for the procedure. Currently, the manual surveys conducted to identify these locations are time-consuming and labor-intensive. Thus, large projects often cannot easily quantify the full-depth patching need because of the significant labor that would be required. This paper proposes a method that uses emerging 3D laser technology to identify the full-depth patching need by processing and analyzing the pavement distresses automatically extracted from 3D laser images. The proposed method consists of five steps: (1) 3D data acquisition, calibration, and validation, (2) crack detection, (3) crack classification, (4) rutting detection and measurement, and (5) determination of image-based patching need using the established decision tree. A case study of one mile of 3D pavement images, collected from US 80/S.R. 26, was conducted to demonstrate the use and feasibility of the proposed method. Results show the proposed method is capable of correctly classifying 95.4% of the images that show pavements requiring patching and 84.2% of the images showing pavements not requiring patching for a combined accuracy of 94.1%. The method shows promise for identifying patch locations in a cost-effective manner and will save money and time for transportation agencies.

Incorrect or outdated data is a common problem when working with Linked Data in real world applications. Linked Data is distributed over the web and under control of various dataset publishers. It is difficult for data publishers to ensure the quality and timeliness of the data all by themselves, though they might receive individual complaints by data users, who identified incorrect or missing data. Indeed, the authors see Linked Data consumers equally responsible for the quality of the datasets they use. PatchR provides a vocabulary to report incorrect data and to propose changes to correct them. Based on the PatchR ontology a framework is suggested that allows users to efficiently report and data publishers to handle change requests for their datasets.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the size effect of the patched repairing material applied to the cracked beam. Design/methodology/approach Numerical analysis was conducted on a simply supported cracked beam with a dimension of 200 × 25 × 15 cm using ABAQUS software. The behavior of concrete and engineered cementitious composites (ECC) in the simulation are described as concrete damage plasticity model. Linear elastic-plastic model was used to represent the behavior of rebar steel. The type of patching consisted of the varying ratio of lengths and depths, including patching length to total length ratios of 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4, and patching depth to total depth ratios of 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. Findings Results show that variations in the patching length and depth ratios affect the maximum flexural load, stiffness and ductility of the repaired beam. It was also found that repairing the cracked beam by using ECC provides higher flexural load of the beam than the use of conventional concrete, owing to the superior tensile strength of ECC. Originality/value ECC is the cementitious-based mortar that contains the special selected poly vinyl alcohol fiber having high tensile strength. ECC has been known to exhibit high ductility, high tensile strength and improve durability performance. Thus, ECC is suitable as repairing material for patching cracked beam. By investigating the size of the patched repairing material applied to the cracked beam, the structural performance of repairing beam and the effectiveness of the various patching size were achieved.

Several studies have compared binocular therapy and patching for the treatment of amblyopia. However, most of them involved a small number of cases and reported controversial results. Thus, the benefit of binocular therapy remains to be confirmed. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of binocular therapy versus patching and to testify whether binocular therapy could become supplementary method in children with amblyopia. Randomised controlled trials that evaluated the efficacy of binocular therapy for amblyopia versus patching were identified using PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Ovid, Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. Data screening, extraction and quality assessment were performed independently by two researchers. Six trials were identified and analysed to compare binocular therapy (708 eyes) with patching (664 eyes) for change in best-corrected visual acuity and stereoacuity. Efficacy estimates were evaluated by standard mean difference (SMD) and 95% CI. The best-corrected visual acuity in binocular group was better than that of in patching group (SMD=−0.21 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (log MAR), 95% CI of −0.50 to 0.08 log MAR, p=0.003). The results showed statistically significant difference in the change of best-corrected visual acuity between the groups, but not in stereoacuity. Binocular therapy may be a promising treatment of conditions affecting visual acuity, and could be applied as a supplementary method to patching for amblyopia in clinical practice. The present analysis showed that some children with amblyopia may benefit from binocular therapy. Nevertheless, larger randomised controlled clinical trials are required to confirm these findings.

A patching material for converter was investigated by using sintered magnesia as the main starting material, a certain carbohydrate as binder and graphite flake and Al metal as additives. The effects of the additions of binder, graphite and aluminium metal on the performances of patching materials were studied respectively. The results revealed that the carbohydrate binder melted during heating, making the patching materials spread out and flow; graphite flake could improve the flow ability, but decrease the bulk density; aluminium metal could partially be oxidized or nitrided, and hence fill the gap and increase the strength.
