Landscape of Dhaka city, one of the fastest growing mega cities in the world, is undergoing continuous changes and modifications due to unplanned hasty urbanization process. As the growth of urbanization taking place at an exceptionally rapid rate the city is unable to cope with changing situation due to internal resource constraints and management limitations. Dhaka city endowed with a large number of water-bodies both big and small, which includes river, khals, lakes, flood plain low-lying areas etc. However, pre and post-urban changes of water-bodies in the city were studied using topographic map of 1960 and a satellite image of 2008 (ALOS VNIR 2008) through GIS and remote sensing technique. It is found that in 1960 total areas of water-bodies and lowland were 2952.02 and 13527.58 hectares. But in 2008 total areas of water-bodies and lowland found 1990.71 and 6414.57 hectares. Categories (water-bodies and lowlands) of wetland areas were decreased harshly. Study shows that water-bodies and lowland areas were decreased 32.57% and 52.58% that means more than 49% of the wetland areas decreased over the period 1960 to 2008. The changes of low-lying areas in the south-western corner extending towards Mirpur, Muhammadpur and Pallabi-Cantonment areas and filled for the urban development. The part of Gulshan and Dhanmondi lakes has also been reduced; and some of the channels of Motijheel areas are not identifiable at present. The growth of urban infrastructures have been taking place in unplanned way; as a result it destroyed natural drainage systems, fill-up the water-bodies, causing water-loggings during rainy season in various part of the city. This study revealed that immediate necessary steps should take by concern authority to prevent from various disasters that might be occurred due to unwise and unplanned wetland changes.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jles.v7i0.20126 J. The Himalayas have a great environmental influence in the Indian subcontinent. But Himalayan ecosystems with their rich biodiversity are particularly fragile. In the recent past, India has been serially affected by several natural calamities like droughts, floods and even earthquakes. Scientists all over the world have warned of various contributing factors. But, the major cause has been attributed to one important matrix – the constant degeneration of the Himalayan ecology. Human activities have resulted in arrested succession, leading to exhaustion of the germplasm of larger shrubs and trees, and invasion of exotic weeds. Large-scale transformation of landscapes for chir-pine plantation in the Himalayas has resulted in changes in soil physicochemical and biological properties. In this article the author depicts the introduction of pines as well as the present and future consequences of pine culture in the Himalayas.

AbstractThe present paper deals with the sphere of Power Engineering and it’s past developments, current status and future scope of Power Engineering education in India. The aim of this manuscript is to explore the prevalent status of Power Engineering education in India from the grassroot level to Industry level applications, data has been collected from India’s premier Institutes of National Importance for this purpose. Introduction to Power Engineering has been given with India-specific past developments and current obstacles faced by the nation’s Power Engineering community in order to achieve a hundred percent electrification rate through clean and efficient means. India ranks second on the list of countries with the most population and seventh on the list of countries with the most land area, it is imperative that India becomes independent in terms of energy production, energy transmission and most importantly energy management. Electric power transmission-loss remains a major roadblock in the delivery of sufficient electric power to India’s citizens and the Power Engineers of India have to contribute to the best of their abilities in order to solve the problem of electric power transmission-loss in the worlds second most populated and seventh largest country. Challenges faced by Power Engineering aspirants and students who are pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Power Engineering have been analysed for every level of technical education available for students in India. Requirements for a Power Engineering Undergraduate aspirant currently in twelfth grade or currently pursuing a Diploma degree and requirements for a Power Engineering Post-Graduate currently in graduation have been explained separately using data from their syllabus which is verified by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), a regulatory body formulated by the Government of India to guide, promote and scrutinize technical education syllabus’ in all institutes and organizations of India concerned with science and technology. Since a large portion of India’s population resides in rural areas and indulges in agrarian based employment practises, the importance of the Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DUGJY) which is an initiative specifically formulated by the Government of India for electrification of India’s villages and rural areas has been explained, India is the second most populated country in the world and predominantly most of this population lives in villages, many of which are located in remote areas and thus it becomes nearly impossible to supply continuous electricity to these areas. As mentioned earlier a major part of India’s economy depends on agrarian products and by-products, thus it is imperative that Power Engineers of India contribute in the development of these areas through continuous supply of clean electrical power which helps in keeping the rural environments of India’s villages clean and green. Government of India’s approach towards marginalised sections of the Indian society for the implementations of these schemes so that they can offer last-mile connectivity has been statistically explained. Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) is being approached and implemented for using the sun as a source of electrical power on war-footing by the Government of India to meet the demands of the second most populated nation on the planet. Power Engineers have actively participated for the efficient utilization of India’s 7500-kilometre coastline in order to generate electrical power from the force of blowing wind, employment opportunities for Power Engineering aspirants, Power Engineering Graduate and Power Engineering Postgraduate students have been disclosed in this manuscript. Initiatives of the Government of India in developing and redefining Power Engineering courses through massive open online courses through National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) which is an online based platform for students and academia alike, NPTEL lectures are available in video format and are delivered by faculties from India’s designated Institutes of National Importance. Past involvement of power engineers in the electrification of India and their role in research and development of new technologies such as ultra-high voltage direct current and superconductors has been scrutinized. In conclusion, future scope of Power Engineering and new technological research and developments have been mentioned with regards to Industrial Revolution 4.0. Possibilities of Power Engineering’s contribution in research and development of Smart-Grids, Micro-Grids and Electrical Power Management sourced from academia, which includes the fourth largest Ph.D. population on the planet and industry alike have been explored in this manuscript.

The eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus), a small anadromous smelt (Family Osmeridae) found only along the Northwest Pacific Coast, is poorly understood. Many spawning populations have suffered declines but as their historic status is relatively unknown and the fisheries poorly documented, it is difficult to study the contributing factors. This thesis provides a survey of eulachon fisheries throughout its geographical range and three analyses aimed at improving our understanding of past and present fisheries, coast-wide abundance status, and the factors which may be impacting these populations. An in-depth view of the Nuxalk Nation eulachon fishery on the Bella Coola River, Central Coast, BC, is provided. The majority of catches were used for making eulachon grease, a food item produced by First Nations by fermenting, then cooking the fish to release the grease. Catch statistics were kept yearly from 1945-1989 but have since, rarely been recorded. Using traditional and local ecological knowledge, catches were reconstructed based on estimated annual grease production. Run size trends were also created using local Fisheries Officers and Nuxalk interview comments. A fuzzy logic expert system was designed to estimate the relative abundance of fifteen eulachon systems. The expert system uses catch data to determine the exploitation status of a fishery and combines it with other data sources (e.g., CPUE) to estimate an abundance status index. The number of sources depended on the existing data and varied from one to eight. Using designed heuristic rules and by adjusting weighting parameters a final index was produced. Results suggest that there have been recent and extended declines in several eulachon rivers particularly the Klamath, California; Bella Coola, BC; Wannock, BC; and Kitimat, BC. Seven of the fifteen abundance time-series were used to evaluate the potential relationships between the declines and some of the factors that impact eulachon. Results suggest increases in shrimp and hake catches, seal and sea lion abundance, and sea surface temperatures were weakly associated with the declines. But contrary to expectations, adult hake biomass showed a positive association with four eulachon relative abundance time-series, suggesting that common environmental factors influenced both species.

Foucault (1996) argued that modern Western history was an invention of nineteenth century Europe and based on linearity, teleology and historicity. Hence the written history and culture of Aboriginal people in Australian has largely been seen through a similar principle as detailed in Chakrabarty’s (2007) ‘provincialising Europe,’ which is through master narratives. My dissertation addresses the question of who the Woppaburra of the Central Queensland region were culturally and historically. The pre-existing Western narrative tells a story of a submissive people studied, described and analysed with a strong colonial discursive approach. In contrast, I have used the ‘counter-narrative’ that Freeman (2004) considered to be the “culturally rooted aspects of one’s history” that are yet to be uncovered (p.298). The lens through which I viewed the counter narrative was through Indigenous research methodology considered part of Indigenous Standpoint Theory (IST). The history and culture of the Woppaburra have been exhumed through the data collected as described in Yins (2009) case study method. I have used Yin’s (2009) multiple data sources as evidence for this study. These data are Western documentation and archival records alongside the voices of Elders in interviews, direct observation at ‘on-country’ meetings and festivals, and physical artefacts which show a cultural representation of totems. A significant artefact is a length of plaited Woppaburra hair which is a biological remnant of the people under study. The Woppaburra believe it holds the memories of ancestors, story lines and healing properties. These data sources have shown that the Western text does not indicate personal stories of traditional practices, attachment to country and the centrality of totems to the Woppaburra. These data have been collectively analysed and findings presented through photographs, artwork and text. The findings from a plethora of documents demonstrate that in government archival records, public newspapers and anthropological photographs, the Woppaburra were used as items of interest, targets of punitive shooting parties, objects of slave labour and a people to be relocated at the whim of protectors. Interviews with Elders and limited anthropological papers give an alternate perspective of a people strongly connected to their natural homelands. The conclusions indicated that although the Woppaburra have been treated harshly, dispossessed of their homeland and denigrated culturally, they retained strong connections with their traditional homeland. In one sense they continue caring for their homeland through partnerships with local, state and national agencies set up by the surrounding culture but in a deeper sense, today they maintain their dreamings and cycle of life through stories and cultural traditions. The connection to country across time for the Woppaburra is that, traditionally and today, they see their world through totems, ancestors and intergenerational narratives.

As khul' is part of a larger concept, namely, divorce initiated or approved by women, attention will also be given to the other options that Islamic law---or, on some points, cultural practices---grants women in order to obtain release from the marital bond. A comparative analysis between the application of marriage and divorce laws under the Ottomans and in contemporary Egypt will then be conducted with a view to shedding light on the effect that the rise of the nation-state has had on gender inequality.

- Libraries are institutions of learning - They represent the cultural heritage and values of a society. Public libraries are often located at places of urban significance or, in the course of time help to establish the latter. They may be landmarks in the urban landscape and help to orient oneself. A public library serves the people, and its spirit should be truly public. A City and University Library in particular, is a highly frequented place where students and citizens meet. It can therefore easily become more than just a place for obtaining information. It can become a place for human interaction, offering spaces to enjoy a concert, to exhibit art or to go there to have lunch or dinner. In that sense, it could be transformed from an institution which is usually used during the day into a vital place which is also used in the evening and on the weekend. The following project pursues the notion of breaking with the traditional image of a public library, expanding its service and thus increasing its position as a place of public interest. This notion is a result of my thesis work, rather than the initial idea from which I started. The location of the project at the edge of the university campus in Frankfurt, Germany and the existence of a theater next to the existing library offered the possibility of establishing a cultural meeting place in one of Frankfurt's city districts.

Eugenics has been an ever present idea since the time of Darwin. While the practices and methods have changed over the years to represent a shift from public to private considerations, eugenics still persists. Advances in scientific technology have led to progressively more finely tuned eugenic techniques in the form of cellular and molecular eugenics. Accompanied with molecular eugenics, the transhumanist movement is pushing the human condition to new boundaries. The ethical dilemmas created by such practices are staggering and barely yet considered.

Book Summary: Hyperacusis and Disorders of Sound Intolerance: Clinical and Research Perspectives is a professional resource for audiology practitioners involved in the clinical management of patients who suffer from sound tolerance concerns. The text covers emerging assessment and intervention strategies associated with hyperacusis, disorders of pitch perception, and other unusual processing deficits of the auditory system. In order to illustrate the patients perspectives and experiences with disorders of auditory processing, cases are included throughout. This collection of diagnostic strategies and tools, evidence-based clinical research, and case reports provides practitioners with avenues for supporting patient management and coping. It combines new developments in the understanding of auditory mechanisms with the clinical tools developed to manage the effects such disorders exert in daily life. Topics addressed include unusual clinical findings and features that influence a patient s auditory processing such as their perceptual accuracy, recognition abilities, and satisfaction with the perception of sound. Hyperacusis is covered with respect to its effects, its relation to psychological disorders, and its management. Hyperacusis is often linked to trauma or closed head injury and the text also considers the management of patients with traumatic brain injury as an opportunity to illustrate the effectiveness of interprofessional care in such cases. Interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy, self-efficacy training, and hearing aid use are reported in a way that enhances clinicians' ability to weave such strategies into their own work, or into their referral system. Hyperacusis and Disorders of Sound Intolerance illuminates increasingly observed auditory-related disorders that challenge students, clinicians, physicians, and patients. The text elucidates and reinforces audiologists contributions to polytrauma and interprofessional care teams and provides clear definitions, delineation of mechanisms, and intervention options for auditory disorders.

AbstractThe use of photovoltaic technology is crucial to meet Europe´s ambitious climate and energy objectives set for 2030. To facilitate this shift, technological innovation is a key prerequisite, and the provision of public funding for related research and development is an important trigger. For this study, a vast set of data has been collected to explore how the EU and its Member States, plus Norway and Turkey, have so far invested in photovoltaic research and development. Based on historic values and actual trends, the authors additionally outline the possible future evolution of the investigated public funding. The study aims to shed light on the development of funding from the early 1970s until 2017 (most recent data available) and provide a forecast for 2030 (based on a business-as-usual scenario). According to results, at the national level, public funding had a considerable and steady rise after the OPEC´s oil embargo in 1973, reaching a first peak in the mid-1980s. The authors predict that, according to the most recent trends, by 2030, these will surpass 200 million € annually. In comparison, EU funding has steadily increased since its inception in the late 1980s up until 2007, but its evolvement is distinctively different, evidencing high fluctuations. The cumulative stock is also examined. National sources outweigh EU programs by a factor of almost five, and the stock should surpass 7 billion € by 2030. Based on the analysis and related insights, recommendations are elaborated on how the development of funding could inform policy strategies and actions to support research and development for photovoltaic technology.

AbstractIn this paper, we present a multimodal deep model for detection of abnormal activity, based on bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory neural networks (LSTM). The proposed model exploits three different input modalities: RGB imagery, thermographic imagery and Channel State Information from Wi-Fi signal reflectance to estimate human intrusion and suspicious activity. The fused multimodal information is used as input in a Bidirectional LSTM, which has the benefit of being able to capture temporal interdependencies in both past and future time instances, a significant aspect in the discussed unusual activity detection scenario. We also present a Bayesian optimization framework that fine-tunes the Bidirectional LSTM parameters in an optimal manner. The proposed framework is evaluated on real-world data from a critical water infrastructure protection and monitoring scenario and the results indicate a superior performance compared to other unimodal and multimodal approaches and classification models.

AbstractWith the ubiquitous diffusion of mobile computing and Internet of Things (IoT), the amount of data exchanged and processed over the internet is increasing every day, demanding secure data communication/storage and new computing primitives. Although computing systems based on microelectronics steadily improved over the past 50 years thanks to the aggressive technological scaling, their improvement is now hindered by excessive power consumption and inherent performance limitation associated to the conventional computer architecture (von Neumann bottleneck). In this scenario, emerging memory technologies are gaining interest thanks to their non-volatility and low power/fast operation. In this chapter, experimental characterization and modeling of spin-transfer torque magnetic memory (STT-MRAM) are presented, with particular focus on cycling endurance and switching variability, which both present a challenge towards STT-based memory applications. Then, the switching variability in STT-MRAM is exploited for hardware security and computing primitives, such as true-random number generator (TRNG) and stochastic spiking neuron for neuromorphic and stochastic computing.

Although northwestern Indian Ocean has experienced some deadly tsunamis in the past, this region remains one of the least studied regions in the world and little research work has been devoted to its tsunami hazard assessment. In this study, we compile and analyze historical tsunami in the northwestern Indian Ocean and present a tsunami list for this region. Then, a deterministic method has been employed to give a preliminary estimation of the tsunami hazard faced by different coastlines in this region. Different source scenarios are considered and for each scenario, numerical modeling of tsunami is performed. For each case, the maximum positive tsunami wave heights along the coasts are calculated which provide a preliminary estimation of tsunami hazard and show which locations face the greatest threat from a large tsunami.

Facial detection is a base component for multiple applications in the fields of biometrics, surveillance, human-robot interaction and others. Although significant progress has been made in the field over the past decade, there are still gaps to be addressed, particularly in specific scenarios as the presence of partial occlusion, variations of lighting, pose, and scale among others. This work aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of recent studies on facial detection in the wild through a systematic literature review. The review includes a focus on the use of scenario-specific information within the field. A total of forty-five papers were analyzed to provide an overview of the field, incorporating information on scenarios.

In today's scenario, many product development projects run the risk of being over budget and/or run past the scheduled deadlines. A major part of this can be attributed to the lack of effective and realistic product planning. We use the thesis that consideration of appropriate suppliers at the right time in a product development project can reduce wastes like waiting for parts to become available, unnecessary design iterations, design defects and poor design, and mitigate risks related to technology and enterprise capability. In the present paper, we present a methodology for effective supplier involvement in a product development project by blending the Design Structure Matrix (DSM) and the PERT/CPM techniques and considering supplier lead times and component interfaces of a given product architecture. We discuss the various options of supplier consolidation, postponement or early involvement of suppliers, and their effects on the product development project cost and schedule. We will demonstrate the working of the proposed methodology using a case example.

With the introduction of Ultra-deep azimuthal resistivity (UDAR) logging while drilling (LWD) tools towards the beginning of the last decade, the Oil and Gas industry went from real time mapping of formation boundaries a few meters from the wellbore to tens of meters away. This innovation allowed early identification of resistivity boundaries and promoted proactive geosteering, allowing for optimization of the wellbore position. Additionally, boundaries and secondary targets that may never be intersected are mapped, allowing for improved well planning for sidetracks, multi laterals and future wells. Advancement in tool design and inversion algorithms has allowed mapping the reservoir in 3D and exploring the sensitivity of these tools ahead of the measure point to provide look ahead warning of resistivity boundaries. Improvements in the technology over the decade have changed the way wellbores are planned, drilled, completed and reservoir models are updated. This paper presents a case study summarizing the advances in UDAR measurements and inversions over the last decade. The case study presents the whole workflow from pre-job planning, service design and execution of 1D and 3D inversion in addition to the future potential of look ahead in horizontal wells. Prewell simulations provide a guide to expected tool responses real-time in the highly heterogeneous formations. This validates how far from the wellbore 1D inversions can map major boundaries above and below the well. A fault was expected towards the toe of the well, UDAR was used as a safeguard to avoid exiting the reservoir. Standard 1D inversion approaches are too simplistic in this complex geologic setting. Thus, 3D inversion around the wellbore and ahead of the transmitter is also explored to demonstrate the improvements this understanding can bring regarding geostopping towards the fault and reservoir understanding in general. Successful geosteering requires personnel trained to handle the uncertainties. A geosteering training simulator (GTS) could be an efficient tool for training, to interpret inversions where the “truth” is known from realistic 3D model scenarios. The team can learn how to best exploit UDAR-technology and inversion results within its limits and not extend the interpretation beyond acceptable uncertainty levels. It will also be addressed how the understanding of inversion uncertainty could be updated real-time in the future. Continued future success of UDAR-technology and 1D – 3D inversion results for look ahead and look around applications will depend heavily on uncertainty management of the inversions to avoid wrong decisions and potential reduced well economy.

SAS-SFR (derived from SAS4A) is presently the most advanced computer code for simulation of the primary phase of the Core Disruptive Accident (CDA) of MOX-fueled Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors (SFR). In the past two decades, intensive model improvement works have been conducted for SAS-SFR utilizing the experimental data from the CABRI programs. The main target of the present work is to confirm validity of these improved models through a systematic and comprehensive set of test analyses to demonstrate that the improved models has a sufficient quality assurance level for applications to reactor conditions. In order to reach these objectives, an approach of PIRT (Phenomena Identification and Ranking Table) on a set of accident scenarios has been applied. Based on the fact that there have been a significant amount of validation studies for decades, development of the code validation matrix concentrated on key issues. Different accident scenarios have been chosen for the PIRT considering typical SFR accident transients that address a large range of phenomena. As the most important and typical Core Disruptive Accident scenarios leading to generalized core melting and to be addressed with SAS-SFR in the present study, ULOF (Unprotected Loss Of Flow), UTOP (Unprotected Transient OverPower) and ULOHS (Unprotected Loss Of Heat Sink) are selected. The PIRT process applied to a given accident scenario consists in an identification of the phenomena involved during the accident, the evaluation of the importance of the phenomena regarding to the evolution and consequences, and the evaluation of the status of knowledge based on the review of available experimental results. The identified phenomena involved in ULOF are explained as follows for the primary phase. Starting from initiating events, a loss of grid power leading to flow coast down without scram is assumed. The scenario up to coolant boiling is the main point within the first part of the ULOF phenomenological chart. Those elements related to reactivity feedback, such as heat up of coolant, fuel and various structures and their deformation due to the thermal transient are picked up. Depending on the time scale before boiling starts, primary, secondary and tertiary loop heat transfer including the DHR (Decay Heat Removal) system response is concerned since it defines the core inlet coolant temperature. Core inlet coolant temperature gives direct impact on the thermal condition of the core. It also affects reactivity through thermal expansion of the grid plate. In the second part of the ULOF phenomenological chart, elements such as coolant boiling, mechanical response of the fuel pin leading to cladding failure, FCI (Fuel-Coolant Interaction) and post-failure material relocation are picked up. This part of the chart is basically common to the ULOHS. Respective identified phenomena are to be simulated in the SAS-SFR code. To validate the function of the models in the code, ten high priority CABRI experiments are selected. Validation studies on these tests are underway. With the present study, important phenomena involved in ULOF, UTOP and ULOHS were identified and an evaluation matrix for the selected CABRI experiments was developed.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Flashing warning lights and vehicle markings of various colors are used on a wide range of emergency and other service vehicles to help inform drivers about the presence of these vehicles and the types of situations that drivers are approaching. Although not applied consistently among all jurisdictions, the colors and performance of these visual elements are often selected to help communicate the type of scenario (such as red flashing lights to indicate an emergency vehicle, or yellow flashing lights to indicate a non-emergency service vehicle). Previous investigations have shown that flashing light colors, vehicle and marking colors, and flashing temporal characteristics (e.g., rapid versus slower flashing) can all affect a driver’s perception of whether a vehicle along the road is responding to an emergency situation or not. Building on previous research, a laboratory study was carried out to investigate how drivers perceive scale-model roadway scenarios including different numbers of vehicles varying in their colors, and with flashing lights modulating at different intensity levels and flash frequencies. For each scenario, observers were asked whether as drivers they would proceed with caution past the scene or prepare to slow down or stop. Observers’ responses were recorded, and the time taken to provide a response was also recorded as a measure of certainty/uncertainty. Overall, the results show that coordinating the presence and color of flashing lights with the colors of vehicles and their markings are among the primary cues used by drivers to assess whether a roadside incident scene is an emergency situation or not. The results also provide suggestions for using flashing lights when multiple vehicles are present to reinforce consistent judgments among drivers.</div></div>

This report presents climate change-informed resource stewardship strategies for diverse Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve natural and cultural resources. The strategies were developed in early 2022 by park staff and other subject-matter experts in a scenario-based climate change adaptation planning process. Strategy development was facilitated by National Park Service (NPS) climate change adaptation specialists. Strategies address critical climate change implications for park resources identified in an immediately preceding (fall-2021) climate-resource scenario development process. The overall, nearly-year-long scenario- and strategy-development process was entirely virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although this circumstance was constraining in some ways, it also provided many benefits, including lower barriers to participant entry, smoother pacing, more opportunities to incorporate personal reflection and individual work, and more points in the process where facilitators could intervene to support participants or make changes. Absence of travel costs, plus organization of the process into a larger number of smaller steps than in the past, allowed the 11 participating park resource management staff to include a large pool of several dozen federal, tribal, state, academic, and private-sector partners. Climate change adaptation strategies are most likely to foster climate change-informed resource stewardship when they support a specific planning process. In this case, that process was the 2021?2023 development of the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve Resource Stewardship Strategy. A Resource Stewardship Strategy is a dynamic planning tool that parks use to set goals for natural and cultural resource stewardship, identify activities to achieve and maintain desired conditions, and track progress.
