The University of York provided the venue for this highly successful collaboration between the Biochemical Society and The Physiological Society, with over 800 attendees enjoying ten colloquia on subjects relevant to both societies. The meeting dinner was held at the National Railway Museum in York, which holds the award European Museum of the Year 2001. Diners were treated to a fabulous meal in the austere company of some of the country's finest locomotives, including the Mallard (pictured above), Evening Star, a reproduction of Stephenson's Rocket and Eurostar. New at the museum is the first ever Bullet train to be displayed outside of Japan. The report below is only a snapshot of what went on at the York Meeting. In August, 1968 nearly 3000 geologists from 91 countries gathered in Prague for the XXIIIrd International Geological Congress. Geology was in a state of major transformation and the Congress was the opportunity for the nascent International Union of Geological Sciences to involve the world geological community. But a brutal invasion of Czechoslovakia by its Communist allies frustrated all plans. Over 500 papers, more than 50 field trips, dozens of colloquia, meetings of affiliated societies etc. were canceled. Thousands of geologists who might have disseminated a uniquely global science to the classrooms and boardrooms of 91 countries's, were scattered by the winds of war. In rump sessions within the dying Congress and immediately after, a handful of West bloc geologists, committed agents of the new developments, struggled to pick up the pieces. The IUGS had to wait four years for another plenary session with the world geological community.

Sajkowski, Wojciech. „Introduction to the Thematic Section“. Colloquia Humanistica, Nr. 6 (22.11.2017): 5–8. http://dx.doi.org/10.11649/ch.2017.002.

Annotation:
Introduction to the Thematic SectionThe images of the borders of civilizations is the main topic of the thematic section of this issue of Colloquia Humanistica. In the call for papers it was emphasised, that this issue is particularly important, because the notion of civilization is strictly related to the issue of borders since it would became meaningless without the opposition to another civilization, or the lack of it. The juxtaposition between the notion of civilization and its different antinomies seems easier to display when seen from its centre, however the shape of its border is not always clear, even if it has a foundation in clear geographical or political divisions. Thus, this border can be represented as a linear frontier between a civilized state and barbaric lands, or as a borderland which encompasses some kind of fluent transition. The civilization border can be also represented in a macro scale, shaping geographic divisions of the continents (as it was in the case of the Balkans), but its depiction can also concern the micro scale, for example the difference between an urban and a natural landscape. The notion is even broader, because it is not only treated in the context of space but also social behaviours and their evolution (which is bound with notion of the progress since the Enlightenment). The question establishing the difference between the civilized and the uncivilized is still shaping the identity of modern societies, and thus it is worth attention.

There are five common vocabulary words in modern colloquial Min that are found in ancient texts of the Han time. This discovery reinforces the phonological arguments made in previous studies, namely, that the Min colloquial readings were directly derived from Old Chinese during the transition period from the Western Han to the Eastern Han.

Background and PurposeFamily care management is a colloquial concept that is widely applied to health and social care worldwide. Despite that the concept has been in use in a variety of contexts for decades, a substantial number of scientific papers apply it with seemingly little consistency. In this study, we therefore report a concept analysis of family care management within a chronic-conditions context from the nursing perspective.MethodsA review of recent nursing and health-related literature covering the years 2000–2020 was performed on the concepts of family care, family nursing, family management, and care management. Nineteen studies were extracted for this analysis. Utilizing the Walker and Avant concept-analysis strategy, we defined attributes and analyzed the antecedents and their consequences.ResultsThe concept is defined from the perspective of health professionals. Five key attributes of family care management were identified: supervising situations, providing guidance, creating partnerships, a philosophical foundation, and a management style. Antecedents to the conductance of family care management included chronic health status, demographic and socioeconomic factors, and shortage of resources. The outcome of family care management was then described with respect to both positive and negative aspects.Implication for PracticeFamily care management is a highly abstract concept. We described two sub-concepts in need of clarification, including dynamic management behavior and a static management frame. Without a clear understanding of family care management, the concept is at risk of being relegated to a vague colloquial expression. Developing a theory of family care management might position the concept in a theoretical context, and could provide health providers with a point of reference for meaningful family care management strategies within their practices.

Commission 41 has been involved in one colloquium and one symposium since the last report:IAU Colloquium 91 on “The History of Oriental Astronomy” was held in New Delhi, November 13-16, 1985, preceding the XlXth General Assembly. Members of the scientific organizing committee were S.M.R. Ansari, E.S. Kennedy, D. King, R. Mercier, O. Pedersen, D. Pingree, G. Saliba, Xi Ze-Zong and K. Yabuuti. The colloquium was co-sponsored by the International Union for the History and Philosophy of Science, and by a number of organizations in India: the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi, the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay, and the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. The local organizing committee, chaired by G. Swarup, made possible a number of local excursions, including a conducted tour of the great stone open air observatory, built in the city by the enlightened Maharadjah Jai Singh in the 18th century. The colloquium brought 84 participants from 19 countries. 46 papers were presented of which 10 were invited, covering aspects of astronomy in the far east and middle east since the earliest civilizations. Papers from Colloquium 91 have now been published in book form: History of Oriental Astronomy, G. Swarup, A.K. Bag, and K.S. Shukla, editors, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, England, 1987. Contributions are divided into three broad categories: ancient astronomy and its characteristics, ancient elements and planetary models, and medieval astronomy. Within these are papers on the characteristics and achievements of early astronomy in the eastern half of the world, including inter-regional development and mutual influences, ancient data relating to eclipses, supernovae and comets, medieval astronomical developments, instruments and early observatories, and the interplay between observational and theoretical astronomy. A short introductory paper by the revered historian E.S. Kennedy opens the book, as it set the stage for the colloquium in New Delhi: “We find (astronomy) originating a few centuries before the Christian era in two disparate cultures, Mesopotamia and the Hellenistic world. From the Mediterranean it passed to India, there to flourish. Thence the centroid of activity moved westward, residing in the lands of Islam during medieval times, more recently in Europe. Now astronomical research is carried out throughout the entire world.”

The 245th Euromech Colloquium, on the effect of background rotation on fluid motions, was held in Cambridge from 10–13 April 1989 with the two authors acting as chairmen. There were sixty-five participants with widely different backgrounds. The striking feature of the Colloquium was the recent advances on nonlinear processes. A wide range of nonlinear phenomena was presented and particular emphasis was on the formation and dynamics of coherent vortices. The similarities between the processes in rotating, curved and stratified flows, which lead to anisotropic motions and long-lived coherent structures alongside linear wave motions was a feature of many of the presentations. Fifty-one papers were presented, covering engineering, geophysical and astrophysical applications of rotating fluids. These papers are summarized in this report with the purpose of giving an up-to-date view of current research in rotating fluids.

Euromech colloquium 339 was organized by C. Staquet in Lyon (France) from September 6 to 9, 1995. It involved seventy-six participants from fourteen countries. Papers were presented on various aspects of stably stratified flows: (i) internal waves, their generation mechanisms, propagation and reflection properties, their instabilities leading to breaking; (ii) vortex structures in stably stratified fluids, which can be slow layerwise structures, or small intense vortices, appearing for instance in shear flow instabilities; (iii) statistical properties of random wave fields or stratified turbulence; (iv) mixing properties resulting from internal wave fields and stratified turbulence. These quite different dynamical regimes are often closely connected in actual flow problems, and one purpose of this colloquium was to better understand these connections. Participants were interested in fundamental aspects or in more specific applications, in engineering, geophysics and astrophysics. The colloquium was a rare opportunity to gather together scientists with these different points of view, to compare approaches and results, and to highlight general problems.

This article is a book review of Paul de Deckker Coutume Autochtone et Evolution du droit dans le Pacficique Sud (1st ed, L'Harmattan, Paris, 1995) 304pp. The book is the product of a colloquium on indigenous custom and the development of law in the South Pacific, held in New Caledonia in July 1994. The papers from the colloquium provide a commentary and resource book on customary law in the South Pacific, with particular reference to the French territories of French Polynesia, New Caledonia, and Wallis and Futuna. Angelo argues that the book is good for reading, as an educational resource, and as stimulus to thought on the complex issues of the day. It is concluded that the book is an important contribution to the literature on the subject of law and custom, and presents in an accessible French much data not available elsewhere.

During the course of this colloquium many papers have been presented on observational aspects of pulsar astronomy. In the following discussion I have not attempted to be comprehensive but have selected a number of areas of interest to me.The basic pulsar properties appear to be consistent over the full range of pulsar periods from 1 ms to 4s, implying that the emission mechanism is the same for all pulsars. There was a general consensus among the observers that the radio emission occurs low down in the pulsar's magnetosphere above the magnetic polar region.

The growing interest in the eastern part of the Hellenistic world has resulted in a number of recent papers, conferences, and books discussing the ebb and flow of cultural contact in previously under-explored regions. Developed from an international colloquium held in September 2009, this edited volume attempts to give an overview of as well as introduce new approaches to understanding the cultural engagement in the Hellenistic East ‘from Alexander to the Sassanids’. No mean feat, the book covers a variety of topics in 30 short chapters in both French and English, giving a true impression of the internationality of this work.

Many papers in the Colloquium describe the difficulties which now exist when radio astronomers try to make highly sensitive observations in various regions of the spectrum. The author has been involved for about 30 years in attempts to get parts of the radio spectrum “protected” so that radio observations could be made in these regions free from damaging interference. Thus it may be interesting in this paper to look backward to the work done by many people before and during the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) World Administrative Radio Conference (WARC) of 1959, and to describe briefly the outcome of that WARC.

The need to develop appropriate knowledge-based strategies to promote better care was the basis for the UNICEF-Cornell University Colloquium on care and nutrition of the young child. The first step was to develop a conceptual model that described the various factors that influenced the quality of care and the pathways through which care influenced the nutrition status of young children below three years of age. The direct care-related behaviours included breastfeeding, complementation, feeding during illness, health related behaviours, and psychosocial care. Several underlying factors at the household, community, and national level and the interactive process of care were also considered. The resource constraints and trends were child characteristics; caregiver factors, including time availability; psychological, health, and nutrition status; organizational resources; and modernization and urbanization. The triple-A process of assessment, analysis, and action was followed to identify, understand, and prioritize the key areas while planning for the Colloquium. Besides the focus and theme papers, case-studies from developing countries and working group sessions were also included.

AbstractThis paper is essentially the author's Gödel Lecture at the ASL Logic Colloquium '09 in Sofia extended and supplemented by material from some other papers. After a brief description of traditional reverse mathematics, a computational approach to is presented. There are then discussions of some interactions between reverse mathematics and the major branches of mathematical logic in terms of the techniques they supply as well as theorems for analysis. The emphasis here is on ones that lie outside the usual main systems of reverse mathematics. While retaining the usual base theory and working still within second order arithmetic, theorems are described that range from those far below the usual systems to ones far above.

In July 1991, thirty-five scholars met at the fourteenth-century Certosa of Pontignano in Siena for a three-day colloquium (jointly sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council, the Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique and the Università degli Studi di Siena) on the topic of relationships between cadets et aînés, or younger and elder siblings. The geographical interests of the participants ranged from the frontier of the North American continent to the whole of the European, while their collective temporal expertise extended from biblical times to the present. The structure of the thematic sessions and the specific issues addressed in the course of the colloquium had been set out in countless early meetings of a ‘scientific committee’, comprising Georges Ravis-Giordani, Pier Giorgio Solinas, Martine Segalen, Lloyd Bonfield and Richard Wall. In large measure, the membership of that committee with respect to discipline and the scholarly agenda that it produced resembled the articulated goals of Continuity and Change. It therefore seemed appropriate that a selection of papers read at the meeting, and subsequently revised in light of the lively dialogue that followed the formal presentations, should provide the basis for the fifth special issue to grace the pages of this journal.

The presented editorial summarizes in brief the efforts of ten (10) papers collected by the Special Issue (SI) “Condensed-Matter-Principia Based Information & Statistical Measures: From Classical to Quantum”. The SI called for papers dealing with condensed-matter systems, or their interdisciplinary analogs, for which well-defined classical statistical vs. quantum information measures can be inferred while based on the entropy concept. The SI has mainly been rested upon objectives addressed by an international colloquium held in October 2019, at the University of Science and Technology (UTP) Bydgoszcz, Poland (see http://zmpf.imif.utp.edu.pl/rci-jcs/rci-jcs-4/), with an emphasis placed on the achievements of Professor Gerard Czajkowski (PGC). PGC commenced his research activity with diffusion-reaction (open) systems under the supervision of Roman S. Ingarden (Toruń), a father of Polish synergetics, and original thermodynamic approaches to self-organization. The active cooperation of PGC mainly with German physicists (Friedrich Schloegl, Aachen; Werner Ebeling, Berlin) ought to be underlined. Then, the development of Czajkowski’s research is worth underscoring, moving from statistical thermodynamics to solid state theory, pursued in terms of nonlinear solid-state optics (Franco Bassani, Pisa), and culminating very recently with large quasiparticles, termed Rydberg excitons, and their coherent interactions with light.

The purpose of this paper is to give a review of ac-dc characterization of the current shunts and application of the current shunt (nominal current 1A) within the digital sampling wattmeter. It is described the ac-dc transfer difference measurement of six cage type ac shunts from 10 mA up to 10 A using step-up measurement procedure. Furthermore, the substantial part of the measurement setup is fast switching system which is also described in detail. For the purpose of measurement procedure, the application is developed in LabVIEW and whole process is fully automatized. Obtained results are analyzed and shown on graphs. This paper is extended version of two papers: [1] and [2] which are presented on 1st International Colloquium on Smart Grid Metrology. Thus, paper is extended with presented application of the shunt 1 A in the digital sampling wattmeter.
