Let $f$ be a flip-invariant Hölder continuous function on the unit tangent bundle $T^1 M$ of a closed negatively curved Riemannian manifold $M$. We show that conditionals on strong unstable manifolds of the Gibbs equilibrium state defined by $f$ can be realized as Hausdorff measures. Moreover, cohomology classes of flip invariant cocycles are in one-to-one correspondence to cross ratios on the space of four pairwise distinct points of the ideal boundary of the universal covering $\tilde M$ of $M$.

An overview of current debates and contemporary research devoted to the modeling of decision-making processes and their facilitation directs attention to the quality of priority ratios estimation through pairwise comparisons. At the core of the process are various approximation procedures for a pairwise comparison matrix which, in a sense, reflects preferences of decision-makers. Certainly, when judgments regarding these preferences are perfectly consistent (cardinally transitive), all approximation procedures coincide and the quality of the prioritization process is exemplary. However, human judgments are very rarely consistent, and thus the quality of priority ratios estimation may significantly vary. Obviously, the range of these variations depends on the applied approximation procedure for a pairwise comparison matrix. Although there are many approximation procedures which can be applied in the prioritization process, it has been promoted for many decades that only one should be applied and no others qualify. This paper suggests this opinion is a fallacy. Research results argue that a genuine, commonly applied approximation procedure for a pairwise comparison matrix may deteriorate the quality of priority ratios estimation. Thus, a number of solutions are also proposed which can improve the process of priority ratios estimation. In order to provide credible and high quality results, the problem is studied via a properly designed and coded seminal simulation algorithm, executed in Wolfram Mathematica 8.0.

The axisymmetric, thermocapillary-driven motion of a pair of non-conducting, spherical drops in near contact is analysed for conditions of small Reynolds and Marangoni numbers. The pairwise motion and an associated contact force are computed by considering touching drops in point contact. Relative motion for nearly touching drops results from the contact force balanced by a lubrication resistance. A new, analytical solution is obtained for the axisymmetric temperature field around an unequal pair of non-conducting, tangent spheres embedded in an ambient temperature gradient. Numerical results for the pairwise migration velocity, contact force, and the relative and individual drop velocities are presented for all size ratios and a wide range of viscosity ratios, and asymptotic formulae are derived for small size ratios. For nearly equisized drops, the ratio of the relative velocity for two drops in near contact to that for widely separated drops is similar for thermocapillary-driven and gravity-driven motion. For small and moderate size ratios, however, this ratio is much larger for thermocapillary-driven relative motion than for gravity-driven relative motion, indicating that the former represents a more efficient coalescence mechanism. An explanation for this finding is provided in terms of the thermocapillary motion of the interface of the larger drop aiding the withdrawal of continuous phase from between the two drops.

This thesis sets out to address the challenges with the comparison of Amphetamine material in determining whether they originate from the same source or different sources using pairwise ratios of peak areas within each chromatogram of material and then modeling the difference between the ratios for each comparison as a basis for evaluation. The evaluation of an existing method that uses these ratios to determine the sum of significant differences between each comparison of material that is provided is done. The outcome of this evaluation suggests that there the distributions for comparison of samples originating from the same source and the comparison of samples originating from different sources have an overlap leading to uncertainties in conclusions. In this work, the differences between the ratios of peak areas have been modeled using a feature-based approach. Because the feature space is quite large, Discriminant Analysis methods such as Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Partial least squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) have been implemented to perform classification by dimensionality reduction. Another popular method that works on the principle of nearest centroid classifier called as Nearest shrunken centroid is also applied that performs classification on shrunken centroids of the features. The results and analysis of all the methods have been performed to obtain the classification results for classes +1 (samples originate from the same source) and  ́1 (samples originate from different sources). Likelihood ratios of each class for each of these methods have also been evaluated using the Empirical Cross-Entropy (ECE) method to determine the robustness of the classifiers. All three models seem to have performed fairly well in terms of classification with LDA being the most robust and reliable with its predictions.

Today’s communication systems are in need of spectrally efficient and high throughput techniques more than ever because of high data rate applications and the scarcity and expense of bandwidth. To cope with increased data rate demands, more base stations are needed which is not cost and energy efficient in cellular networks. It has been shown that wireless relay networks can provide higher network throughput and increase power efficiency with low complexity and cost. Furthermore, network resources can be utilized more efficiently by using network coding in relay networks. A wireless relay network in which multiple nodes exchange information with the help of relay node(s) is called a multi-way relay channel (MWRC). MWRCs are expected to be an integral part of next generation wireless standards. The main focus of this dissertation is the investigation of transmission schemes in an MWRC to improve the throughput and error performance. An MWRC with full data exchange is assumed in which a half-duplex relay station (RS) is the enabler of communication. One of the challenges with signal demodulation in MWRCs is the existence of ambiguous points in the received constellation. The first part of this dissertation investigates a transmission scheme for full data exchange in MWRC that benefits from these points and improves its throughput by 33% compared to traditional relaying. Then an MWRC is considered where a RS assists multiple nodes to exchange messages. A different approach is taken to avoid ambiguous points in the superposition of user symbols at the relay. This can be achieved by employing complex field network coding (CFNC) which results in full data exchange in two communication phases. CFNC may lead to small Euclidean distances between constellation points, resulting in poor error performance. To improve this performance, the optimal user precoding values are derived such that the power efficiency of the relay constellation is highest when channel state information is available at the users. The error performance of each user is then analyzed and compared with other relaying schemes. Finally, focusing on the uplink of multi-way relay systems, the performance of an MWRC is studied in which users can employ arbitrary modulation schemes and the links between the users and the relay have different gains, e.g. Rayleigh fading. Analytical expressions for the exact average pairwise error probability of these MWRCs are derived. The probability density function (PDF) and the mean of the minimum Euclidean distance of the relay constellation are closely approximated, and a tight upper bound on the symbol error probability is developed.

Abstract Since decisions are invariably made within a given context, we model relative preferences as ratios of increments or decrements in an interval on the axis of desirability. Next, we sort the ratio magnitudes into a small number of categories, represented by numerical values on a geometric scale. We explain why the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), typically based on a pairwise-comparison method, is concerned with category judgement of ratio magnitudes, whereas the Simple Multi-Attribute Rating Technique (SMART) essentially uses the orders of magnitude of these ratios. This provides a common basis for the analysis of the methods in question and for a cross-validation of their results. The present paper summarizes the basic assumptions and the relationship between the two methods.

The evaluation of design concepts is a time consuming and resource intensive process. Crowdsourcing evaluations has been examined in previous work as a means to reduce the need for expert raters, while achieving similar evaluation results. This paper examines the impact of empathically priming novice raters on their evaluation of alternative design concepts. The rating system is based on a pairwise comparison method that requires minimal training of novice raters. In a pilot study the pairwise method for crowdsourcing evaluations is compared with crowdsourced evaluations using non-pairwise rating scales and with the evaluations of expert raters. The primary study incorporates written and empathic priming strategies to determine their impact on novice raters’ evaluation of concepts. Raters are asked to consider several criteria, including novelty, feasibility, clarity (of the concept), usefulness, ease of use, and overall worthiness of further development. Results offer insight into the criteria that are most relevant to novice raters and whether empathic priming has a significant effect on those evaluations.
