The article is devoted to the creativity of Wu Changshi (1844–1927), who played a key role in preserving the continuity of Chinese fine art at the crucial initial stage of the global modernization of China's traditional culture. The subject of the study is the aesthetics of the unity of the “four perfections” (si jue), which means poetry, calligraphy, painting and seals. The synthesis of the four arts seems to be a unique achievement of Chinese culture, which influenced the countries of the hieroglyphic area. Wu Changshi's creativity is considered the culmination of the embodiment of the principle of unity of the “four perfections”. Wu Changshi's calligraphic and pictorial works are accompanied by poems most often of his own composition. Before Wu Changshi's creative impulse gained visual realization, he was invariably subjected to deep poetic and philosophical reflection, which predetermined the content of calligraphic and pictorial works. Thanks to this, the meanings of visual forms went beyond their genre affiliation. Wu Changshi created a variety of spatial and force effects in a small format of seals. Wu Changshi's monumental and heroic style in calligraphy had no equal in its energy power and corresponded to the demands of the time. Wu Changshi reformed the pictorial tradition in the direction of epigraphic painting, combining elite intellectualism with the folk immediacy of color perception. The work is based on the latest publications of Chinese and Western art critics. The research combines the techniques of traditional Chinese art studies with the methods of Western interdisciplinary analysis.

Picture geometry is often regarded as an area of technical knowledge that accompanies or provides useful information for basic research on visual culture and almost never as a methodological one. Despite the historical and conceptual connections between mathe­matics and the visual, even a basic geometric competence is by no means a common of image and visual culture researchers. At the same time, the overwhelming majority of this kind of work belong to the field of technical knowledge, the history of mathemat­ics, or positivism based theories; in other words, they do not address the most important issues for humanities research. Rare non-technical works in this area do not find due recognition and dissemination among a wider community of specialists. The article offers the main result of the research, the subject of which was pictorial depth. Pictorial depth is the version of the specific experience of distance with which the image is traditionally associated. The problem of distance is a classical area of philosophical reflection on the image. The article presents an attempt to geometrically express one of its versions, namely pictorial and visual depth. At the same time, the important dimension of inacces­sibility and heterogeneity is preserved, that is, the experience of depth is not reduced to visual data or the literal geometry of a flat picture. By constructing a geometrically object that can be considered depth, it is possible to extract intuitively non-obvious properties that would not be available through direct analysis of experience and other methods of naked reflection. The article presents only some of the findings obtained during the study.

Abstract In the late Ming, illustrated materia medica works became increasingly salient among educated elites in the Jiangnan area. This article analyzes two hand-illustrated treatises, Jinshi kunchong caomu zhuang and Bencao tupu, and the cultural contexts of their production. The interplays between copying and editing and image-text relationships in the two works provide insight into how materia medica was exploited as a pictorial subject for ideas about the human-nature dynamic. I demonstrate that materia medica images represented symbolic possession of the natural world and thus served as a maker of social distinction. I also shed light on the perpetuated tradition of making images of materia medica as an intellectual practice. My examinations of materia medica images by women artists also challenge the correlations between gender and representations of flora and fauna in the historiography of Chinese paintings.

Los Angeles County has a number of watercourses which discharge into the Pacific Ocean. Three of these are of major importance in that they traverse the Coastal Plain area of the County. These three are the Los Angeles River, the San Gabriel River, and Ballona Creek. They have a combined drainage area of approximately 1,645 square miles, most of which is within Los Angeles County. Such area not only comprises over 40 percent of the land area of the County but, more important, includes within its boundaries, the great majority of the County's population. The Coastal Plain area of Los Angeles County, prior to installation of flood control works, was probably subject to a greater potential flood hazard than any area of similar size and density of population in the United States. It has been subjected periodically to floods that, descending from the San Gabriel and Santa Monica Mountains, have rushed across the valley floor towards the Pacific Ocean altering topographic features and causing loss of life and property.

The paper highlights the history of Russian research of manganese nodules in the Pacific Clarion–Clipperton zone, the most promising nodule-bearing province of the World Ocean, and presents the main results of geological exploration work carried out in the Russian license area in the Pacific Ocean – the Russian Exploration Area for Polymetallic nodules. The article provides information about the contractual obligations to the International Seabed Authority (ISBA) that the Russian Federation has in accordance with a fifteen-year contract for the exploration of polymetallic nodules concluded with the ISBA. The paper also presents the main results of studying the baseline environmental characteristics of the natural environment in the Russian Exploration Area for Polymetallic Nodules. Information is provided on the fulfillment of other contractual obligations to the International Seabed Authority: scientific research on the development of exploration and production technologies, processing technologies, training of personnel for the International Seabed Authority, and fulfillment of financial obligations.

Abstract An increasing number of Japanese ethnographers have conducted fieldwork research in Pacific Islands in the last few decades, which has resulted in a growing corpus of ethnographic literature. This is partly related to the historical role that Japan has played in the Pacific and partly to its geographical proximity to the area. While this geo-historical advantage combines with the availability of ethnographic works produced by non-Japanese scholars, the latter remain largely unable to access anthropological literature only available in Japanese. This not only limits the international circulation of ethnographies produced by Japanese anthropologists of the Pacific, but also the possibility of engaging with a larger body of anthropological traditions and, thus, with the overall project of 'World Anthropologies'. This article discusses the reasons why Japanese ethnographies of the Pacific provide not only a technical advantage for non-Japanese scholars of Pacific Islands but also a qualitative difference in terms of anthropological perspectives. In particular, it examines the differential impact of different colonial and postcolonial debates on Japanese and anglophone anthropology in relation to ethnographies of urban Melanesia.

Abstract It is recognised that Indigenous Māori and Pacific Peoples are affected disproportionately by Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF) and Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD). Rates of ARF and RHD in New Zealand and the Pacific Region are of concern. Appropriate community engagement and knowledge translation efforts that support dissemination of research work and findings of relevance to Pacific populations, are of importance for effective dialogue. Efforts to communicate scientific research work and engage appropriately with Pacific communities and audiences have been limited, and require cultural considerations to ensure communication and interactions are culturally appropriate, clear and meaningful. The purpose of this work was to facilitate discussion between researchers and Pacific communities, regarding ARF and RHD Penicillin related research works of direct relevance and importance to Pacific communities in the Wellington area. Led by a Pacific Biomedical Scientist and supported by University Pacific staff and Medical students, a Pacific Fono (gathering) outreach event in the Hutt Valley was held on the 24th July, 2018. Scientific information and research work with immunological components related to ARF and RHD were presented, followed by a question answer session. Members of the Pacific community that attended represented different Pacific population groups with written and verbal feedback indicating the event had been informative and was enjoyed by those in attendance. This scientific knowledge translation and science communication event demonstrated appropriate engagement had been achieved to support dialogue between researchers and the Pacific community, regarding ARF and RHD Penicillin related research efforts.

Abstract Indigenous Māori and Pacific population groups remain disproportionately affected by Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF) and Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD). ARF is an autoimmune response to untreated throat (and skin) infection by Group A Streptococcal bacteria. Untreated and repeated episodes of ARF or a severe attack, can lead to permanent cardiac damage known as RHD. High rates of ARF and RHD persist in New Zealand and the Pacific Region. To help raise awareness and support knowledge translation efforts that facilitate dissemination of research work and findings of relevance to Pacific populations, appropriate community engagement is needed. The purpose of this work was to host a Pacific community event to support appropriate engagement and dialogue between researchers and Pacific communities in the southern Wellington Region that would facilitate communication and discussion of ARF/RHD related Penicillin research works and findings. A Pacific community event was held on 30th July, 2018 in Porirua that involved Pacific researchers, University Pacific staff a Medical student and various Pacific groups in the area. Scientific information and research focused on Immunological components related to ARF and RHD were presented by a Pacific Biomedical Scientist with the audience participating in a lengthy discussion session that followed. Feedback demonstrated those involved had engaged appropriately and successfully with the Pacific community groups represented with requests made for similar future events to be held. The response to this Pacific community event highlights the importance of cultural awareness being combined with appropriate scientific and knowledge translation communication activity to support effective dialogue.

Wars are destructive events that, despite their destructive nature, occur with a certain frequency in the history of human existence. The course of wars, their nature and causes are different, but the impact of military events on human consciousness is inevitable. The problem of the destructive nature of war, its ability to integrate and differentiate human communities often received not only scientific coverage, but also became the subject of works of art. Art is a sphere of human life that flexibly responds to all events that occur in the socio-cultural space. There are many literary, pictorial, theatrical, cinematic works that reflect military events. Examples of military coverage can be found in the musical art of the XX–XXI century. Works related to the theme of war and peace, the balance between these phenomena, are available in both foreign and Ukrainian music culture. The purpose of the paper is to highlight the specifics of musical works on military themes and to determine the dominant features that are inherent in them. This task is urgent, given the significant transformation of modern life of the Ukrainian people and the need to define the role of musical art in society. Highlighting the features of musical works will determine their role in the context of culture. Methodology of the study is based on general research methods of analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, observation and abstraction, which are used to systematize achievements in the study of military topics in the art of music. The logic of the study involves determining the range of works on the theme of war, highlighting their essential features, conducting a comparative analysis of works written by Western European artists and outlining further prospects for work in this direction. Results. Composers, turning in their works to military themes, often seek to make their compositions understandable to the public. After all, their works acquire the role of a kind of artistic manifestos, the result of their own subjective experiences of military events, or to reflect on them as observers. Trying to make them as accessible as possible to the audience helps to choose the principle of programmability when it comes to instrumental opuses. Composers give their works bright names that allow drawing an analogy with military events, adding poetic epigraphs and more. If composers turn to vocal and instrumental works, they choose those verbal texts that reproduce the desired artistic and figurative content. Most often, artists choose genres such as requiem, crying, oratorio. Composer’s reflection often includes reliance on texts of the Ordinary, Catholic Mass, etc., which are stable carriers of meaning, have their own symbolic value and are understandable due to their circulation in music culture to the general public. Practical implications. The study of works related to military themes provides an opportunity to understand the power of art, as well as to determine its role in society. The works of Western European composers of the XX century M. Ravel, C. Debussy became a reaction to the events of the First World War. The works of A. Schoenberg, A. Onegger, B. Britten, and K. Penderetsky were initiated at the beginning of the Second World War. Nowadays, the 21st century is a time of wars, which are a powerful emotional shock for people in general and composers in particular, who are trying to capture this traumatic experience in an artistic form. However, they see their mission not only in recreating events in an artistic form, but also in creating a kind of warning for posterity about the inability to move through wars that bring only pain and suffering, causing the death of human beings. Value/originality. Composers’ artistic manifestos are a direct reaction to the changing world, shocks that confuse people, even if they were not directly involved. A promising area for further research is to highlight the specifics of works by Ukrainian composers related to military issues.

This chapter demonstrates how Lyotard’s aesthetic theory provides the basis for a new interpretation of Yves Klein which provides an alternative to his common reception as a Conceptual artist. Through the different activities of philosophy and art, Lyotard and Klein both explore the nature of sensibility through an investigation of matter. Both paradoxically conclude that matter is in a sense immaterial. Lyotard understands matter as that part of an artwork which is diverse, unstable, and evanescent: in music, this corresponds to nuance and timbre, and in painting, to colour. Klein develops his meditation on matter firstly through his monochrome “propositions,” calling attention to pure colour (in particular, blue), which he theorises as stabilisations of energy. Beyond this, Klein invents “immaterial” works, such as the famous Void exhibition and his Zones of Immaterial Pictorial Sensibility. This chapter develops the confluences between Lyotard’s and Klein’s reflections on “immaterial matter,” and seeks to show how the results achieved in each area of activity (philosophy and art) can contribute to the other.

The United States Marine Corps (USMC), having changed its focus from counter insurgency to conventional warfare against a peer adversary, is in the midst of a comprehensive change of force structure and operating concepts. The pacing threat and main priority is China and the Pacific region. The objective of the new Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations (EABO) concept, developed by the USMC, is to make the force relevant against a peer adversary. That roughly means operating as a stand-in force (SIF) in small units, distributed over a large area, with long-range sensors and long-range weapons. The concept relies on the assumption that the USMC is present in the area of operation before a war breaks out. The concept also relies on the assumption that what works in the Pacific region will work in the Arctic climate, Norwegian geography, and against Russia as an adversary. For the USMC, the situation regarding Norway today has many similarities with the Cold War in the 1980s. The greatest differences from the Cold War era are the focus on China and the Pacific instead of Russia and Norway. The Pacific region is prioritized when it comes to equipment, new units and personnel. To make EABO work requires local adaptation in close cooperation with the Norwegian Armed Forces. Too many factors indicate that the USMC will have difficulties operationalizing the EABO concept in Norway.

Perhaps the earliest reference to an optical oceanographic research cruise can be found in the book by Otto Krümmel (1886), in which the author refers to the Rurik circumnavigational cruise of 1817 made by Otto von Kotzebue. In these studies von Kotzebue made measurements using optical instrumentation comprised of a piece of red cloth tethered to a line and lowered into the sea. With this technique, von Kotzebue was able to crudely measure the depth of penetration of light. This technique was refined by using a white plate, and the first measurements in the Pacific (at 10°N 152°W) yielded measurements of 49 meters. It is worth noting that this work was done several decades before the famous efforts of Secchi (1866). Efforts to incorporate photographic techniques to characterize the underwater light field were also developing in the late 1800’s. In March, 1885 some experiments were made in the waters off Nice, France, in which a photographic plate was submerged to depths of several hundred meters. Additional historical information can be found in the classical textbook by Sauberer and Ruttner (1941). Theoretical treatments of optical oceanography developed somewhat later. Ludvig Valentin Lorenz published the first works on the theoretical aspects of marine light scattering. This work, originally published in Danish (Lorenz, 1890), was subsequently translated into French in 1915. Martin Knudsen (founder of International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, and developer of some of the fundamental concepts for making hydrographic calculations) also had concerns about marine optics as reflected in correspondence he sent to Professor Otto Pettersson (father of Hans Pettersson) in Sweden: . . . In studying those provinces of water and particularly of sea water, which are of importance to the organisms living therein, the study of the light contents of the water must occupy the prominent place. Light contents play in many respects a similar part to that of oxygen content but have not been so strongly investigated as the latter. . . .

Stock movement prediction is a hot topic in the Fintech area. Previous works usually predict the price movement in a daily basis, although the market impact of news can be absorbed much shorter, and the exact time is hard to estimate. In this work, we propose a more practical objective to predict the overnight stock movement between the previous close price and the open price. As no trading operation occurs after market close, the market impact of overnight news will be reflected by the overnight movement. One big obstacle for such task is the lacking of data, in this work we collect and publish the overnight stock price movement dataset of Reuters Financial News. Another challenge is that the stocks in the market are not independent, which is omitted by previous works. To make use of the connection among stocks, we propose a LSTM Relational Graph Convolutional Network (LSTM-RGCN) model, which models the connection among stocks with their correlation matrix. Extensive experiment results show that our model outperforms the baseline models. Further analysis shows that the introduction of the graph enables our model to predict the movement of stocks that are not directly associated with news as well as the whole market, which is not available in most previous methods.

Being able to automatically discover synonymous entities in an open-world setting benefits various tasks such as entity disambiguation or knowledge graph canonicalization. Existing works either only utilize entity features, or rely on structured annotations from a single piece of context where the entity is mentioned. To leverage diverse contexts where entities are mentioned, in this paper, we generalize the distributional hypothesis to a multi-context setting and propose a synonym discovery framework that detects entity synonyms from free-text corpora with considerations on effectiveness and robustness. As one of the key components in synonym discovery, we introduce a neural network model SynonymNet to determine whether or not two given entities are synonym with each other. Instead of using entities features, SynonymNet makes use of multiple pieces of contexts in which the entity is mentioned, and compares the context-level similarity via a bilateral matching schema. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model is able to detect synonym sets that are not observed during training on both generic and domain-specific datasets: Wiki+Freebase, PubMed+UMLS, and MedBook+MKG, with up to 4.16% improvement in terms of Area Under the Curve and 3.19% in terms of Mean Average Precision compared to the best baseline method.

The experience gained during the operation and maintenance activities on the Camisea Pipeline Gas Transport System (SDT) owned by TGP in Peru — which goes from the Amazon rainforest in the region of Cusco to the Pacific coast near Lima, along 729 Km — has led to the evolution and the optimization of the design, construction and maintenance processes regarding works focused on the stabilization of the slopes along the right of way of the pipeline carrying natural gas and natural gas liquid. This section of the right of way is 95 km long and crosses tropical mountains in the Amazon rainforest, in a transitional area between the Manugaly valley and the basin top boundary. It was noticed since 2005 that the right of way had being affected by a land slide consisting of a horizontal crack in the ground, between both pipelines and along them. So, after number of in-site inspections, the team concluded that the area was being affected by a large ground removal event. As a consequence, traces of geotechnical instability were found on the right side of the right of way, consisting of stress cracks, transverse settlements and leaks. All of those were affecting the stability conditions of the ground. From the annual in-site follow-up, monitoring and geotechnical testing, the team established that this process affecting the right of way was caused by a large mass removal process directly related to the increase of the imbalance rate of an old colluvial deposit below the entire area, triggered by the heavy rainfall in the area — ca. 3 500 mm a year, mainly between October and April. It is to be mentioned that the axis of the NG and NGL pipelines is located on the top of this colluvial deposit, which is susceptible to landslides. This is noticeable because of cracks present in the place. Local geomorphology and heavy deforestation — caused by locals — triggers an increase of the rainfall water filtration rate into the ground, thus speeding up the slide processes. Piezometers installed in the area showed high levels of the local water table. Movement readings are: top length: 70 m; length: 250 m; width: 150 m. Criteria for the construction of landslide mitigation structures in the pipeline área are being established based on a permanent land survey monitoring system — including inclinometers, piezometers and strain-gages — as this is a large regional movement. This control action allowed the operation to continue free of damages to the pipelines and under controlled costs.

Ritter in which he described the “erotic obsession” which had caused him to depict the statue of the Sleeping Ariadne in the gardens of Versailles as a scantily-clad odalisque in the painting entitled La Versailles du Grand Turc, up to his last graphic project of 1964 entitled “Nassaince du Minotaure II”, the “private mythology” of Le Corbusier’s works was dominated by Minoan-Cretan mythology, to the point that the bull symbol became the unifying principle of his entire pictorial, plastic and architectural work. Dozens of Le Corbusier’s architectural projects include the theme of the labyrinth. The “main ouverte” and Ariadne - la Licorne were intended to “join up” from afar Chandigarh with the Bhakra dam. For the dam Le Corbusier designed architectural elements and he planned to install a copy of the “Ariadne” sculpture, similar in size to the “open hand” at Chandigarh. The Chandigarh-Bhakra complex – the planned city and the hydroelectric infrastructure – was the realization of the global post-war reconstruction plan, an approach devised by Le Corbusier together with the UN’s CIAM, based on the model of the TVA, the New-Deal Federal Agency, which had planned the development of the most backward area in the States starting from hydropower generation. Speed reduction, additional resistance or slamming, which caused by the large ship motions, should be avoided for a high-speed oceangoing vessel, because of the delivery punctuality and high value of the cargo. A promising ship type for such the oceangoing vessel is the so-called “Resonance-Free SWATH (RFS)”. It has negative restoring moment due to the extraordinary small water plane area. As a consequence, the resonance peak is removed from the motion response. RFS is designed to cross 4,800 nautical miles of Pacific Ocean within 5 days punctually at a speed of 40 knots, with good seaworthiness such as no speed reduction or absolutely no slamming even when running in the rough sea of sea state 7 with significant wave height of 6–9 m. The attitude of RFS with negative restoring moment is adjusted by four pairs of controlling fins attached to the fore and aft ends of lower hulls. In the previous works, the quasi-steady values of lift-curve slope are usually adopted in the motion equations of frequency domain. However, when working in waves, the controlling fins are not in a steady state. The lift coefficient is no longer a constant. In addition, there exist a phase lag between the movement of attack angle and the fin-generated lift. The theoretical prediction and the experiment to analyze the phenomena of lift generation including the phase difference and the interaction among fins and lower hulls are carried out. The results show that the characteristics of fins depend on the encounter frequency. Then, the effect of lift characteristics of controlling fins on the RFS model is discussed. The results of theoretical estimation and experiment are discussed and it is observed that estimated results agree to some extent with experimental results.

The Camisea’s Pipeline Transportation System (PTS) in Peru, owned by Transportadora de Gas del Perú (TgP) and operated by Compañía Operadora de Gas del Amazonas (COGA), stars in the Amazon rainforest, crosses the Andes Mountain (4850masl) and descends finally towards the coast of the Pacific. The PTS has more than 10 years of operation and it has two pipelines: one transports Natural Gas (NG) and the other Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) pipelines. The NG pipeline has a length of 864km including a Loop pipeline of 135km. The NGL pipeline has a length of 557km. Because of particular physiographic conditions of each geographic sector that cross the right-of-way (ROW), the integrity of the PTS acquires a level of significant susceptibility to the occurrence of geohazard, which are the product of natural erosive processes and mass movements. In the coast sector, one of the most representative processes of geotechnical instability is the soil or debris flow (mass movements of soils). The occurrence of this type of flow has a greater incidence in the torrential creek, which generate transport of large volumes of sediments during rainy seasons. The flow has destructive effects and therefore, it is necessary to analyze the geomorphological, geological and hydrological aspects of the main creek and rivers that crosses the ROW with the objective of maintaining the integrity of the pipelines. In Peru, the flows are associated and known as Huayco or Huaico. As an additional component, it is highlight that the Peruvian coast is located within the area of interaction between the South American Continental Plate and the Nazca Plate, where there is evidence of seismic activity with different magnitude that influence on the occurrence of geo-dynamic processes with certain periods of frequency that could change the terrane’s morphology. The current article describes technical aspects of identification, intervention, monitoring, and geotechnical control in sub-fluvial crossings with levels of potential damage to the geohazard defined as huayco in the integrity management program of PTS. This activity include 63 main sub-fluvial crosses, approximately 30% are of the seasonal flow regime, located in the coast zone; at the same time, these are tributary to main rivers of constant flow as is the case of the Pisco, Cañete and Mala rivers. In this paper, it is place a special emphasis on the fourth crossing of the Huáncano creek, because it is a place of potential impact in the occurrence of soil flows. Within the annual geotechnical maintenance of the sub-fluvial crosses, in the part of the Peruvian coast, for the operation of the PTS of TgP, bed and banks protection some works are implemented, such as: Check dams, re-channeling, levees and stone riprap (Stone armour). Likewise, a program of evaluation and technical inspection is develop: it includes the analysis of the expected levels of undermining and performance condition of the existing works, which allow defining the geotechnical intervention in a term according to the identified risk level. All in all framed within a process of permanent geotechnical monitoring of the right of way. Finally, it is highlighted that to date the application of the process described above has been continued, which has facilitated the development and continuous assessment of the risk condition by huaycos in the PTS of TgP. This program has maintained an operation with an acceptable level of risk in the areas of interest and avoiding problems and consequences of great impact to communities, the environment and the operation of the system.
