Workflow is a critical enabler for achieving enterprise competitiveness with today’s hot technologies, as portals, e-business and e-commerce. Workflow modeling is the first step before workflow executes, and resources can become important decision factors. The lack of resources can cause contention, the need for some tasks to wait for others to complete, and the slowing down of the accomplishment of larger goals. In this paper, we discuss the resource model in workflow system, and define the resource-constrained model. The main merit of resource model is that it bridges the gap between the human and the machine level problem solving.

Understanding why some firms outperform others is central to strategy research. The resource-based view (RBV) suggests that competitive advantages arise due to possessing strategic resources (i.e., assets that are valuable, rare, nonsubstitutable, and inimitable), and researchers have extended this logic to explain performance differences. However, RBV is relatively silent about the actions managers could use to create or capitalize on a resource-based advantage. Enriching RBV, the resource orchestration framework describes specific managerial actions that use such resources to realize performance gains. After reviewing the conceptual evolution of these two literature streams as well as related streams, we use meta-analytic structural equation modeling to aggregate evidence from 255 samples involving 111,614 observations to answer outstanding research questions regarding the strategic resources–actions–performance pathway. The results show strong complementarity and interdependence between their logics. Additional inquiry drawing on their complementarity is a clear path toward enhancing scholars’ understanding of how and why some firms outperform others. We build on our findings to lay a foundation for such inquiry, including a call for theorizing centered on the interdependence of resources and actions, as well as new theoretical terrain that can help resource-based inquiry continue to evolve.

ABSTRACT The new Oil Pollution Act of 1990 defines natural resource damages from oil spills as the sum of the cost to restore foregone natural resource services, the diminution of value of natural resource services prior to restoration, and damage assessment costs. Natural resource damages are usually determined once removal activities (containment, protection, and cleanup) are completed. Nevertheless, removal activities affect the magnitude of all three natural resource damage components. Consequently, to minimize the total cost of oil spills, decisions on removal activities should consider the linkages between removal activities and natural resource damages. Successful containment results in minimal natural resource damages, because oil generally does far less damage to natural resources in open water than on shore. If oil cannot be contained, the potential natural resource damages from oil coming ashore in certain areas can help determine priorities for protection activities. In particular, oil may harm natural resource services much more in some areas than in others. Furthermore, some natural resource services are more costly to restore and assess than others. Finally, some cleanup activities do more harm than good to natural resource services. If the effects of cleanup activities on natural resource damages are ignored, “excessive” cleanup activities are likely.

Petri nets are a powerful formalism in modeling workflows. A workflow determines the flow of work according to pre-defined business process. In many situations, business processes are constrained by scarce resources. The lack of resources can cause contention, the need for some tasks to wait for others to complete, which slows down the accomplishment of larger goals. In our previous work, a resource-constrained workflow model was introduced and a resource requirement analysis approach was developed for emergency response workflows, in which support of on-the-fly workflow change is critical [14]. In this paper, we propose a Petri net based approach for recourse requirements analysis, which can be used for more general purposes. The concept of resource-oriented workflow nets (ROWN) is introduced and the transition firing rules of ROWN are presented. Resource requirements for general workflows can be done through reachability analysis. An efficient resource analysis algorithm is developed for a class of well-structured workflows, in which when a task execution is started it is guaranteed to finish successfully. For a task that may fail in the middle of execution, an equivalent non-failing task model in terms of resource consumption is developed.

On-demand resource management is a key characteristic of cloud computing. Cloud providers should support the computational resource sharing in a fair way to ensure that no user gets much better resources than others. Another goal is to improve the resource utilization by minimizing the resource fragmentation when mapping virtual machines to physical servers. The focus of this paper is the proposal of a game theoretic resources allocation algorithm that considers the fairness among users and the resources utilization for both. The experiments with an FUGA implementation on an 8-node server cluster show the optimality of this algorithm in keeping fairness by comparing with the evaluation of the Hadoop scheduler. The simulations based on Google workload trace demonstrate that the algorithm is able to reduce resource wastage and achieve a better resource utilization rate than other allocation mechanisms.

This project addresses how and why behavior in a resource dilemma differs when one only knows the choices of others versus only knows the state of the resource. Study 1 suggested that resource information is more valuable than social information, in that if the resource can be monitored, whether or not others’ choices can also be monitored has no impact on behavior. However, if the state of the resource is not known, the ability to know what others are doing is critical for cooperation. This seems to be because resource information encourages planning and long-term thinking, and social information encourages comparative thinking. Study 2 replicated the behavior pattern, revealed—surprisingly—that warnings that a resource is critically low undermine (rather than promote) cooperation, and that such responses depend on the availability of social and environmental information. Discussion focuses on how incomplete information about a resource might be addressed.

We present models for bartering of resources on grids. Bartering models can be useful for making resource allocation decisions in grids and perhaps even for building a so called barter grid whereby distributed resources such as electronic media can be bartered. Grids allow various resources to be shared among many users. This sharing however definitely does not mean that everyone will have unrestricted use of the resources. Some mechanism such as pricing or quotas can be employed in order to enforce controlled sharing of resources. A barter model for resource sharing can enable people or computer centers to directly get something in return for letting their resources to be used by others. We utilize directed hypergraphs to develop a barter model in which multiple resources can be traded. We prove that the decision version of the multi-resource bartering problem is NP-complete. We present an integer programming formulation for the bartering problem. We also present a linear time algorithm to compute components that may contain feasible bartering solutions. We generalize our multi-resource bartering formulation to the case where multiple instances of resources are present. Finally, we present various computational results from our software that makes use of LP_SOLVE and CPLEX mixed integer programming libraries to solve example bartering problems.

The aim of this dissertation is to demonstrate why the theology of Edward Schillebeeckx provides a worthy and valuable resource for negotiating the question of how Christians can maintain their unique Christian identity and uphold the core tenets of their faith, while recognizing the need for and benefit of dialogue with non-Christian religions. In a world where interaction with religious others is inevitable, a perilous sense of superiority that excludes non-Christians from the possibility of imparting wisdom must be avoided. Yet, as this dissertation illustrates, a theory that all religions are equal and that absolute claims that contradict the beliefs of other religions (such as Jesus as God incarnate and the universal savior of humankind) must be given up, is equally as dangerous. I show that Schillebeeckx, although he never identified himself explicitly with one of the three paradigms of the theology of religions (exclusivism, inclusivism, and pluralism), maintained an inclusivist position but one that is more radical than that of some of his contemporaries. He upheld the unique role of Jesus Christ in human history while regarding religious pluralism, rather than a problem to be solved, as an opportunity for Christians to learn from and expand upon their conceptions of the humanum, or what human wholeness entails. This dissertation critically examines the three major paradigms used to understand the relationship of Christianity to non-Christian religions. It argues that the adoption of a pluralist position that regards all religions to be equal, and relinquishes any absolute claims, is not necessary, and can, in fact, be detrimental to fruitful interreligious dialogue. It traces Schillebeeckx's development of the negative contrast experience and illustrates how it can serve as a universal starting point for interreligious dialogue that does not attempt to essentialize human nature or tie all positive responses to human suffering to a latent Christianity present in every person. This dissertation describes the major components of Schillebeeckx's soteriology: creation as the starting point for soteriology; the unbreakable relationship between fragments of salvation in this world and final, or eschatological salvation; the role of Jesus as the assurance of final salvation; and the communal nature of salvation. It shows how the implication of Schillebeeckx's soteriology, which starts from the premise "there is no salvation outside the world," is "no salvation apart from religious others." This means that our ability to experience fragments of salvation in our everyday lives is dependent on learning from and collaboration with human beings who do not share our religious beliefs, but does not require us to erase religious differences, or tailor our beliefs to "fit" neatly into others' religious views. Finally, this dissertation applies Schillebeeckx's soteriology to concrete struggles faced by Muslim women and Catholic women in order to illustrate how interreligious dialogue can bring persons toward the fullness of the humanum

Verill, Joanne. „Management in practice : analysing the impact of policy change on managers and doctors in general medical practice“. Thesis, Northumbria University, 2005. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/1976/.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
This thesis explores the impact of changes in health policy introduced by Conservative administrations in the period 1987 to 1995 on the definition, management and control of professional work within general medical practice. The research underpinning this work combined secondary analysis, large-scale primary fieldwork and qualitative research with clinicians and managers. The first stage of primary fieldwork was conducted during the period September 1994 to June 1995 and consisted of a postal survey of 750 practices across England and Wales. This was followed up with a second phase of research involving depth interviews with managers and clinicians, delivered in the period July to November 1995. This pluralist methodology sought to connect micro and macro levels of analysis in exploring the relationship between the state, professions and managers in primary care. The research explores the extent to which a number of professional freedoms have been challenged by policy change including political, economic and technical autonomy and the extent to which this had changed the position and rewards of managers in general practice. Employing a multi-dimensional approach to the analysis of power this thesis suggests that prevailing theories of a decline in professional power, based primarily on economic relations at the macro level cannot account for the complexity of relations found in UK general practice. Further, studies focusing at the collective level of bargaining between the state and the medical profession in the UK have over-estimated the impact of policy change due to a neglect of study at the micro level. Rather this study has revealed a complex picture of both continuity and change in which general practitioners have lost, retained and in some cases extended their power as a result of policy initiatives. Whilst professional freedoms have remained relatively intact, the impact of policy change on the occupation of Practice Management has been more significant, with prevailing discourses of `managerialism' creating gendered struggles over the definition and meaning of management in primary care. This work therefore calls for a multi-dimensional account of social life which can explain the complex interaction of differing sites of power, within which a wide range of power resources are deployed. Further this work would endorse a dynamic concept of power in which 'patterns of interaction' (Bradley 1999) are fluid and changeable rather than fixed and self-sustaining systems. It is argued here that constraints on social action are created by the history of past agency, embedded in institutions and social practices that both shape, and are shaped by the agency of individuals.

Annotation:
This portfolio thesis contains three parts: a systematic literature review, an empirical paper, and a set of appendices. Person-centred and social constructionist approaches to dementia have proposed that the experience of living with the condition is influenced by the responses of others towards the individual, and the personal response of the individual to dementia. Part one is a systematic literature review that therefore critically evaluates and synthesizes the qualitative literature pertaining to the way in which people with dementia experience the responses of others towards them. The review aims to further our understanding of how people with dementia perceive the responses of others and the impact that these have upon them. This is deemed to be an important area to address given that theoretical understandings of dementia assign a critical role to the responses of others in influencing an individual’s experience of dementia, and yet this aspect of subjective experience has been overlooked in previous reviews. Following a systematic search of the literature, 23 studies were suitable for review based on the inclusion criteria. A critical interpretative synthesis was conducted, leading to the development of four main themes to capture findings across the reviewed literature: ‘Social outcasting – being treated as an other’; ‘Social relegation – being treated as lesser’; ‘The impact of others’ responses’; and ‘Strategies to manage the responses of others’. These themes and the subthemes within them are compared and contrasted to the themes developed by researchers in their original findings, paying attention to the discourses that may have been influencing their interpretation. The strength of the evidence is evaluated, and implications for clinical research and practice discussed. Part two is an empirical paper investigating people’s personal responses to dementia, focusing upon subjective experiences of growth in older people living with dementia. A qualitative methodology was utilised, using semi-structured interviews to investigate participants’ experiences of positive and/or meaningful changes since living with dementia. Interviews were conducted with nine older people diagnosed with dementia living in the community. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to explore participants’ subjective experiences and how they had made sense of these. From this, a theme of ‘Moving Forward’ was developed, containing five subthemes. A second theme of ‘Living in the Now’ was also developed, containing two further subthemes. The findings are discussed with consideration of the discourses we use to talk about dementia, and the implications of a growth discourse to clinical research and practice. Part three consists of a set of appendices for both systematic literature review and empirical paper, including a reflective account of the research process and a statement of epistemology.

Kidger, P. J. K. „Human resource management in multinational enterprises“. Thesis, University of Salford, 1999. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/14789/.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
The multinational enterprise (MNE) is now a significant part of the world economy both in temis of trade and employment. The performance of an MINE is in part dependent on the capability of its human resource. The knowledge and experience of employees is a source of competitive advantage, but whether this is realised or not may depend on having the right human resource policies. Managers therefore seek to implement best practice, and in multinationals there is the potential for intraorganizational learning across national boundaries. The aim of this thesis is to examine a number of questions arising from the proposition that multinational firms are contributing to the development of international norms of best practice in human resource management as a result of a trend towards greater coordination of management practice in MNEs. It is suggested that multinationals are developing mechanisms to encourage the transfer of knowledge and experience across national boundaries, and this is therefore an important aspect of international human resource management (HRM). The thesis contains a review of the literature, firstly on the management of multinationals, secondly on the development of a strategic view of human resource management, and thirdly on HRM in the MINE. From this material, a theoretical framework is developed that links together a number of research questions. These formed the basis for the design and execution of a qualitative research project in which information on strategy, structure and management practice was obtained from twentyfour companies. These represented a cross-section of country ownership, including the UK, other European countries, the USA and Japan. The design of the research project is explained, and this is followed by a presentation of the results. These support the proposition that as a consequence of the globalization of markets, multinationals are tending to adopt a more global perspective in which there is greater cross-national integration of operations, coordination of management practice, and the development of internationally orientated management. The analysis discusses the implications of this for international human resource management, and offers a number of recommendations for HRM in the multinational enterprise. Finally some suggestions are made for future research to build on and extend the findings of this project.

In Product Development (PD), there is an inherent complexity in deciding what resources should perform which tasks taking into account their effectiveness towards completing the task, while adjusting to their availabilities. The right resources must be applied to the right tasks in the correct order. In this context, process modeling and simulation could aid in resource management decision making. However, most approaches define resources as elements needed to perform the activities without defining their characteristics, or use a single classification such as “designers”. Despite their crucial importance to the delivery of the product, resources such as computational hardware, software, testing resources, amongst others have been overlooked during process planning stages. This paper presents a new method to model different resource types (designers, computational, testing) and studies the impact of using different options of those resources by simulating the model and analyzing the results. Thus, the new approach, which extends a task network model with Bayesian Networks (BN), allows testing the influence of using different resources on process performance. The method uses BN within each task to model different instances of resources that carries out the design activities (computational, designers and testing) along with its configurable attributes (time, risk, learning curve etc.), and tasks requirements. Thus, activity behavior is shaped depending on the chosen resource option to perform it. The approach enhances the capability to explore resource combination design space. It was applied to an aerospace case study to identify insights such as the best performing resource combinations, critical resources, resource sensitive activities, and the probability of a resource reaching performance targets.

Inspired by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, we study a generalization of the multi-resource allocation problem with heterogeneous demands and Leontief utilities. Unlike existing settings, we allow each agent to specify requirements to only accept allocations from a subset of the total supply for each resource. These requirements can take form in location constraints (e.g. A hospital can only accept volunteers who live nearby due to commute limitations). This can also model a type of substitution effect where some agents need 1 unit of resource A \emph{or} B, both belonging to the same meta-type. But some agents specifically want A, and others specifically want B. We propose a new mechanism called Dominant Resource Fairness with Meta Types which determines the allocations by solving a small number of linear programs. The proposed method satisfies Pareto optimality, envy-freeness, strategy-proofness, and a notion of sharing incentive for our setting. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to study this problem formulation, which improved upon existing work by capturing more constraints that often arise in real life situations. Finally, we show numerically that our method scales better to large problems than alternative approaches.

The manufacturers are competing against each other based on their development ability. A manufacturer who wants to do better than others must emphasize its ability of product development. The resources that product development relies on are more distributed than ever along with the varying of the global design environment. So more and more resources outside of enterprises are needed during the product design process. The platform supporting the product modern design under the circumstance of distributed resources will meet the requirement of the enterprise’s product design and development under such conditions. The platform will also simplify the implementation on the integral of the IT support system for design resources outside of enterprises. In this paper the characteristics and supporting technologies of product design platform, which supporting the distributed design resource circumstance and centering on the enterprise, are studied. The building method of the platform is presented and a prototype of the product design platform is developed. Three subsystems are included in the platform. They are the product requirements analysis system, the product design planning system and the knowledge management system. Many design tasks can be supported on the platform, such as product requirement analysis, concept design, detail design, experiment, and maintenance knowledge acquirement. The distributing, implementing, tracking and managing of product lifecycle tasks can also be supported on the platform. The distributed design resources could be sealed as application components to provide design services. Design work flow model and knowledge flow model are built and controlled through the FIPER software. The design knowledge is managed based on the ontology theory. The virtual prototype of a complex product can be built and run more easily with the design platform. The process of building a virtual prototype could be described simply as following. Firstly the distributed models are sealed as application components. Then the components are published in the FIPER environment. Finally, the virtual prototype is built in the form of design work flow model in which the distributed components are integrated. To simulate the coupling of multi-discipline behaviors in a complex product design, the coupling formula is proposed to express the relations of different discipline behaviors. Based on the coupling formula, the coupling simulation can be run on the platform. Finally, a lifecycle performance prototype of an internal combustion engine is developed through the platform to verify the platform’s functions.

A Different Approach to the Skills and Resource Shortage The Nuclear Industry has for many years been concerned about a skills and resource shortage. This has been due to a poor perception of the industry by those on the outside, highly competitive industries vying for the same resource pool, a steep retirement curve for highly qualified staff and a lack of graduates entering industry. Here in the UK the creation of the National Skill Academy for Nuclear (NSAN) has put in place a framework to record skills and look to accredit the training providers in the nuclear industry to ensure that the correct skills for the future are available. This has gone some way to solving the skills problem and developing a well recognised accredited system but what about resource — where are the additional qualified resources going to be found? Part of the Solution – A Resource Exchange. How do we solve the skills shortage? We come together as an industry and share the available resource through a collaborative resource exchange. It has been done before in the IT industry when rates for specialists hit £1500 per day and recruitment agencies were charging extortionate fees for providing temporary resource. ReTek Consulting have developed the ReTek Resource Exchange to provide a neutral collaborative platform across the supply chain; from large scale infrastructure companies and joint venture platforms through to small companies and independent consultants. Using the ReTek Exchange permanent staff are made available to work for others during periods of underutilisation. Links with similar highly regulated industries enable further management of peaks and troughs and a growth in experienced nuclear professionals through focused training and development. The Benefits of the ReTek Exchange are: • Increased utilisation of your current workforce. • Shared cost of permanent staff. • Speedy access to staff available in your region. • Reduced need for contract or agency staff. • Access to wider skills & experience. • Retention of key staff through personal development. • Knowledge and experience transfer. Now is the time in the industry to make the most of the available resource and work together to ensure the required growth through training and development of all workers. The infrastructure required to make this resource exchange possible is available and proven many times. This paper will talk through the story of the development of the ReTek Exchange in the UK and how the same system can be used elsewhere in the world.

Considering the agent-based modeling and mapping in manufacturing system, some system models are described in this paper, which are included: Domain Based Hierarchical Structure (DBHS), Cascading Agent Structure (CAS), Proximity Relation structure (PRS), and Bus-based network structure (BNS). In DBHS, one sort of agents, called static agents, individually acts as Domain Agents, Resources Agents, UserInterface Agents and Gateway Agents. And the others, named mobile agents, are the brokers of task and process flow. Static agents representing a subsystem may itself be an agent-based network and should learn as the mobile agents to deal with new situation. Mobile agents move around the network domains taking advantage of the resources to fulfill their goals. In CAS, We use Unified Modeling Language (UML) to build up the agent-based manufacturing system It is said Enterprise agent (main agent) has factory agents together with some directly jurisdictional workshop agents, cell agents, and individual resource agents. Likewise, factory agent has workshop agents together with some directly jurisdictional cell agents and individual resource agents, and so on. In PRS, the resources agents are located together by its function and abilities. There is only one agent behaves as the task-announcer. The communication just occurs among the Proximity Relational agents. In BNS, It is very similar with the society of human being connected with a network, some agents, such as ‘cost calculating’, are just cope with the matter-of-fact job. And some agents run as the individual resources that can negotiate with each other and advertise a necessary message within the whole domain or a given group of agents. The administration just relies on the individual address of agents and the group ID code of agents.

In this work, we provide novel methods which benefit from obtained probability bounds for assessing the ability of teams of agents to accomplish coalitional tasks. To this end, our first method is based on an improvement of the Paley-Zygmund inequality, while the second and the third ones are devised based on manipulations of the two-sided Chebyshev’s inequality and the Hoeffding’s inequality, respectively. Agents have no knowledge of the amount of resources others possess; and hold private Bayesian beliefs regarding the potential resource investment of every other agent. Our methods allow agents to demand that certain confidence levels are reached, regarding the resource contributions of the various coalitions. In order to tackle real-world scenarios, we allow agents to form overlapping coalitions, so that one can simultaneously be part of a number of coalitions. We thus present a protocol for iterated overlapping coalition formation (OCF), through which agents can complete tasks that grant them utility. Agents lie on a social network and their distance affects their likelihood of cooperation towards the completion of a task. We confirm our methods’ effectiveness by testing them on both a random graph of 300 nodes and a real-world social network of 4039 nodes.

Lacking complete and accurate data, many pipeline companies have adopted various forms of relative (index-based) risk assessment models(2) which help define their acceptable risk position based on available pipeline data, limited resources and corporate beliefs. Through this proven risk assessment process, company management establishes their unique risk algorithm by benchmarking variables which contribute to the likelihood of failure, and the associated consequences of failure, for all pipeline systems. This algorithm then acts as a pipeline data filter to identify pipeline areas at greater risk relative to others. A progressive relative risk assessment process can change an operator’s safety and resource allocation culture, resulting in reduced pipeline failure rates, increased operating flexibility and improved financial performance.

In an economic market, sellers, infomediaries and customers constitute an economic network. Each seller has her own customer group and the seller's private customers are unobservable to other sellers. Therefore, a seller can only sell commodities among her own customers unless other sellers or infomediaries share her sale information to their customer groups. However, a seller is not incentivized to share others' sale information by default, which leads to inefficient resource allocation and limited revenue for the sale. To tackle this problem, we develop a novel mechanism called customer sharing mechanism (CSM) which incentivizes all sellers to share each other's sale information to their private customer groups. Furthermore, CSM also incentivizes all customers to truthfully participate in the sale. In the end, CSM not only allocates the commodities efficiently but also optimizes the seller's revenue.

In complex production and maintenance environments, such as ship production, the method of allocating resources and managing other constraints significantly affects the efficiency of progress as well as the overall project duration. Resources include human resources, equipment resources and physical-space resources. Due to the inherent complexity of resource allocation and constraint management for such complex production and maintenance environments, the project durations can be two-times, or more, longer than needed. Unfortunately, most commercial project management software does not benefit from such intelligent scheduling technology. Software that does not leverage intelligent scheduling may also determine incorrect critical resources. A resource is critical if the project duration would be shorter if more of that resource were available. So not using intelligent scheduling will result in longer than necessary schedules and might direct users in the wrong direction per critical resources, thus leading to wasteful acquisition of more resources to shorten the schedule when this is an option.
