Abstract Angelo Secchi, an Italian Jesuit and prominent scientist of the 19th century, and one of the founders of modern astrophysics, observed the Sun regularly at the Collegio Romano in Rome, Italy, for more than 25 yr. Results from his observations are reported in articles published in the scientific journals of the time, as well as in drawings and personal notebooks that are stored in the historical archive of the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma. The latter material, which reports solar observations performed from 1853–1878, includes original documents from Secchi and from a few of his close collaborators. The above unique material has recently been digitized for preservation purposes and for allowing the scientific exploitation of data not easily accessible so far. A total of more than 5400 digital images have been produced. Here we present the archival material and the new digital data derived from it. We also present results obtained from our primary analysis of the new digital data. In particular, we produced new measurements of the group number from 1853–1878, which will be available for future recalibration of the group number series.

Abstract. The lack of long and reliable time series of solar spectral irradiance (SSI) measurements makes an accurate quantification of solar contributions to recent climate change difficult. Whereas earlier SSI observations and models provided a qualitatively consistent picture of the SSI variability, recent measurements by the SORCE (SOlar Radiation and Climate Experiment) satellite suggest a significantly stronger variability in the ultraviolet (UV) spectral range and changes in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) bands in anti-phase with the solar cycle. A number of recent chemistry-climate model (CCM) simulations have shown that this might have significant implications on the Earth's atmosphere. Motivated by these results, we summarize here our current knowledge of SSI variability and its impact on Earth's climate. We present a detailed overview of existing SSI measurements and provide thorough comparison of models available to date. SSI changes influence the Earth's atmosphere, both directly, through changes in shortwave (SW) heating and therefore, temperature and ozone distributions in the stratosphere, and indirectly, through dynamical feedbacks. We investigate these direct and indirect effects using several state-of-the art CCM simulations forced with measured and modelled SSI changes. A unique asset of this study is the use of a common comprehensive approach for an issue that is usually addressed separately by different communities. We show that the SORCE measurements are difficult to reconcile with earlier observations and with SSI models. Of the five SSI models discussed here, specifically NRLSSI (Naval Research Laboratory Solar Spectral Irradiance), SATIRE-S (Spectral And Total Irradiance REconstructions for the Satellite era), COSI (COde for Solar Irradiance), SRPM (Solar Radiation Physical Modelling), and OAR (Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma), only one shows a behaviour of the UV and visible irradiance qualitatively resembling that of the recent SORCE measurements. However, the integral of the SSI computed with this model over the entire spectral range does not reproduce the measured cyclical changes of the total solar irradiance, which is an essential requisite for realistic evaluations of solar effects on the Earth's climate in CCMs. We show that within the range provided by the recent SSI observations and semi-empirical models discussed here, the NRLSSI model and SORCE observations represent the lower and upper limits in the magnitude of the SSI solar cycle variation. The results of the CCM simulations, forced with the SSI solar cycle variations estimated from the NRLSSI model and from SORCE measurements, show that the direct solar response in the stratosphere is larger for the SORCE than for the NRLSSI data. Correspondingly, larger UV forcing also leads to a larger surface response. Finally, we discuss the reliability of the available data and we propose additional coordinated work, first to build composite SSI data sets out of scattered observations and to refine current SSI models, and second, to run coordinated CCM experiments.

Abstract<title> SUMMARY </title>During the 19th Century the systematic collecting of meteorological data became a general practice. Several scientists and instrument makers invented new meteorological instruments and improved the existing ones. Probably the most impressive and sophisticated recording apparatus was the meteorograph devised between 1855 and 1865 by the Italian astronomer Padre Angelo Secchi (1818-1878). This huge and complicated machine was presented to the 1867 Paris Universal Exhibition where it was considered the technological masterpiece. The instrument worked in Rome for several years and then, partially dismanteled, was finally stored in the Osservatorio Astronomico di Monte Porzio (Rome). Recently carried to Florence, the meteorograph is now beeing restored in the laboratories of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure under the supervision of the Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza. My paper will trace the history of this ingeniuos instrument which represented a technological achievement but an economic failure.

La categoria dei commercianti rappresenta un osservatorio privilegiato del fenomeno immigrazione, perché esprime una domanda di manodopera che incontra facilmente l'offerta proveniente da lavoratori stranieri, spesso poco qualificata e a basso costo, e si trova ad avere molteplici occasioni di interazione con gli immigrati.. L'obiettivo principale dell'articolo č comprendere come le dimensioni economica, sociale e individuale del piccolo imprenditore entrano in gioco nell'orientare l'opinione sull'inclusione degli stranieri nella societŕ italiana. Le articolate posizioni dei commercianti sono sintetizzate attraverso due profili speculari di atteggiamento: quello dell'accoglienza e della diffidenza.

To test the performance of the WWFPP in polarimetric mode, we performed surface polarimetry of the Crab nebula in February 1993 using the Asiago 1.82 m telescope of the ‘Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova’. The polarimeter is a new design and enables us to do simultaneous wide-field polarimetry (15 × 15 arcmin field with 0.43 arcsec/pixel) of four polarization angles using a twin Wollaston prism or simultaneous polarimetry of two angles using a double wedge plate with orthogonal sheet polarizers in combination with an achromatic half wave plate. For the observations described here we used the twin Wollaston. The advantages of this design are independency of fluctuations of atmospheric transmission and identical seeing for one set of Stokes parameters. The results of the observations are in agreement with results of other investigators who performed surface polarimetry of the Crab Nebula.

L'obiettivo di questo elaborato è quello di indicare una via verso una nuova modalità di utilizzo degli osservatori astronomici disseminati lungo la penisola italiana. Utilizzando le tecnologie disponibili e integrandole fra loro il sistema che si andrà a progettare permetterà di controllare da remoto un osservatorio astronomico. Questa nuova modalità di interazione con strumenti scientifici quali i telescopi potrà rendere possibile nuove modalità di divulgazione astronomica, sia in ambito educativo fornendo nuovi strumenti alle scuole che in ambito culturale potendo avvicinare tutti i curiosi all'osservazione dei corpi celesti che circondano il pianeta Terra. Utilizzare la tecnologia per avvicinare le persone alla scienza è una grande sfida per il futuro: le nuove scoperte e le nuove invenzioni non sono ormai piu frutto di singole menti brillanti ma frutto di collaborazioni e figlie della "sapienza collettiva" che Internet sta fortificando e rendendo sempre piu fruibile.
