The dynamic traffic control problem and the dynamic traffic assignment problem are integrated as a noncooperative game between a traffic authority and highway users. The objective of the combined control-assignment problem is to find a mutually consistent dynamic system-optimal signal setting and dynamic user-optimal traffic flow. The combined control-assignment problem is first formulated as a one-level Cournot game: the traffic authority and the users choose their strategies simultaneously. The combined control-assignment problem is subsequently formulated as a bi-level Stackelberg game. The traffic authority is the leader; it determines the signal settings in anticipation of the users’ reactions. The users are followers who choose their routes after the signal settings have been determined. Finally, the system-optimal control-assignment problem is formulated as a Monopoly game. The sole player—the traffic authority—determines both signal settings and traffic flows to achieve a dynamic system-optimal solution. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the equilibria of the games.

The process of selecting optimal settings for directional over-current relays (DOC relays) is a selection of time dial setting (TDS) and IP (backup current), So that changes in the system of electrical power distribution. In this work, a breeder genetic algorithm (BGA) has been applied to optimal settings of DOC relays with multisystem D-FACTS devices. The simulation consists of two network operation scenarios, scenario without D-FACTS which consisting of coordination of DOC relays against three phase faults, and the second scenarios with multi TCSC. In general, had been verified on optimal settings of relays that the impacts of TCSC insertion in 33-bus distribution system on DOC relays.

This study is aimed at developing a real-time optimal control strategy for variable air volume (VAV) air-conditioning in a heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system using genetic algorithms and a simulated large-scale office building. The two selected control variables are the settings for the supply air temperature and the duct static pressure to provide optimal control for the VAV air-conditioning system. Genetic algorithms were employed to calculate the optimal control settings for each control variable. The proposed optimal control conditions were evaluated according to the total energy consumption of the HVAC system based on its component parts (fan, chiller, and cold-water pump). The results confirm that the supply air temperature and duct static pressure change according to the cooling load of the simulated building. Using the proposed optimal control variables, the total energy consumption of the building was reduced up to 5.72% compared to under ‘normal’ settings and conditions.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to use analytical method and optimization tools to suggest time-optimal vaccination program for a basic SIR epidemic model with mass action contact rate when supply is limited. Design/methodology/approach – The Lagrange Multiplier Method and Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle are used to explore optimal control strategy and obtain analytical solution for the control system to minimize the total cost of disease with boundary constraint. The numerical simulation is done with Matlab using the sequential linear programming method to illustrate the impact of parameters. Findings – The result highlighted that the optimal control strategy is Bang-Bang control – to vaccinate with maximal effort until either all of the resources are used up or epidemic is over, and the optimal strategies and total cost of vaccination are usually dependent on whether there is any constraint of resource, however, the optimal strategy is independent on the relative cost of vaccination when the supply is limited. Practical implications – The research indicate a practical view that the enhancement of daily vaccination rate is critical to make effective initiatives to prevent epidemic from out breaking and reduce the costs of control. Originality/value – The analysis of the time-optimal application of outbreak control is of clear practical value and the introducing of resource constraint in epidemic control is of realistic sense, these are beneficial for epidemiologists and public health officials.

AbstractThis paper derives key equations for the determination of optimal control strategies in an important engineering application. A train travels from one station to the next along a track with continuously varying gradient. The journey must be completed within a given time and it is desirable to minimise fuel consumption. We assume that only certain discrete throttle settings are possible and that each setting determines a constant rate of fuel supply. This assumption is based on the control mechanism for a typical diesel-electric locomotive. For each setting the power developed by the locomotive is directly proportional to the rate of fuel supply. We assume a single level of braking acceleration. For each fixed finite sequence of control settings we show that fuel consumption is minimised only if the settings are changed when certain key equations are satisfied. The strategy determined by these equations is called a strategy of optimal type. We show that the equations can be derived using an intuitive limit procedure applied to corresponding equations obtained by Howlett [9, 10] in the case of a piecewise constant gradient. The equations will also be derived directly by extending the methods used by Howlett. We discuss a basic solution procedure for the key equations and apply the procedure to find a strategy of optimal type in appropriate specific examples.

A method for finding the optimal PID controller settings is proposed, which takes into account all the shortcomings of the most common engineering methods for finding controller settings. The method is characterized by: simplicity and versatility, which allows determining the optimal controller settings for one iteration; highly accurate identification of the control object, taking into account its nonlinearity, does not require an active experiment, provides improved dynamic properties of systems. Tuning parameters of controllers are found by the proposed method of finding the optimal settings of the controller and the most common engineering methods for finding the settings of controllers for ACS control objects in the production of nitric acid. In addition to the examples given, a number of control objects with varying degrees of oscillation and inertia are investigated. A comparative analysis of the proposed method with the most common engineering methods for finding controller settings for ACS control objects in the production of nitric acid is performed. The analysis shows that the controller parameters found by the proposed method significantly improve the dynamic properties of the system (the overshoot decreased by 10 times, the regulation time decreased by about 30 %, the static and dynamic errors decreased by 2–3 times).

A fast and efficient method to calculate time schedules for internal and boundary PRVs and flow modulation curves has been developed and implemented. Both time and flow modulation can be applied to a single inlet DMA. The time modulation methodology is based on solving a nonlinear programming problem (NLP). In addition, Genetic Algorithms (GA) has been proposed and investigated to calculate the optimal coefficients of a second order relationship between the flow and the outlet pressure for a PRV to minimize the background leakage. The obtained curve can be subsequently implemented using a flow modulation controller in a feedback control scheme. The Aquai-Mod® is a hydraulic device to control and modulate the outlet pressure of a PRV according to the valve flow. The controller was experimentally tested to assess its performance and functionality in different conditions and operating ranges. The mathematical model of the controller has been developed and solved, in both steady state and dynamic conditions. The results of the model have been compared with the experimental data and showed a good agreement in the magnitude and trends. A new method for combined energy and pressure management via integration and coordination of pump scheduling with pressure control aspects has been created. The method is based on formulating and solving an optimisation NLP problem and involves pressure dependent leakage. The cost function of the optimisation problem represents the total cost of water treatment and pumping energy. Developed network scheduling algorithm consists of two stages. The first stage involves solving a continuous problem, where operation of each pump is described by continuous variable. Subsequently, the second stage continuous pump schedules are discretised using heuristic algorithm. Another area of research has been developing optimal feedback rules using GA to control the operation of pump stations. Each pump station has a rule described by two water levels in a downstream reservoir and a value of pump speed for each tariff period. The lower and upper water switching levels of the downstream reservoir correspond to the pump being “ON” or “OFF”. The achieved similar energy cost per 1 Ml of pumped water. In the considered case study, the optimal feedback rules had advantage of small number of ON/OFF switches, which increase the pump stations lifetime and reduce the maintenance cost as well.

In dieser Arbeit untersuchen wir das Problem der Maximierung bestimmter konkaver Funktionale auf dem Raum der optionalen, zufälligen Maße. Deartige Funktionale treten in der mikroökonomischen Literatur auf, wo ihre Maximierung auf die Bestimmung des optimalen Konsumplans eines ökomischen Agenten hinausläuft. Als Alternative zu den wohlbekannten Methoden der dynamischen Programmierung wird ein neuer Zugang vorgestellt, der es erlaubt, die Struktur der maximierenden Maße in einem über den üblicherweise angenommenen Markovschen Rahmen hinausgehenden, allgemeinen Semimartingalrahmen zu klären. Unser Zugang basiert auf einer unendlichdimensionalen Version des Kuhn-Tucker-Theorems. Die implizierten Bedingungen erster Ordnung erlauben es uns, das Maximierungsproblem auf ein neuartiges Darstellungsproblem für optionale Prozesse zu reduzieren, das damit als ein nicht-Markovsches Substitut für die Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Gleichung der dynamischen Programmierung dient. Um dieses Darstellungsproblem im deterministischen Fall zu lösen, führen wir eine zeitinhomogene Verallgemeinerung des Konvexitätsbegriffs ein. Die Lösung im allgemeinen stochastischen Fall ergibt sich über eine enge Beziehung zur Theorie des Gittins-Index der optimalen dynamischen Planung. Unter geeigneten Annahmen gelingt ihre Darstellung in geschlossener Form. Es zeigt sich dabei, daß die maximierenden Maße absolutstetig, diskret und auch singulär sein können, je nach Struktur der dem Problem zugrundeliegenden Stochastik. Im mikroökonomischen Kontext ist es natürlich, daß Problem in einen Gleichgewichtsrahmen einzubetten. Der letzte Teil der Arbeit liefert hierzu ein allgemeines Existenzresultat für ein solches Gleichgewicht.
In this thesis, we study the problem of maximizing certain concave functionals on the space of optional random measures. Such functionals arise in microeconomic theory where their maximization corresponds to finding the optimal consumption plan of some economic agent. As an alternative to the well-known methods of Dynamic Programming, we develop a new approach which allows us to clarify the structure of maximizing measures in a general stochastic setting extending beyond the usually required Markovian framework. Our approach is based on an infinite-dimensional version of the Kuhn-Tucker Theorem. The implied first-order conditions allow us to reduce the maximization problem to a new type of representation problem for optional processes which serves as a non-Markovian substitute for the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation of Dynamic Programming. In order to solve this representation problem in the deterministic case, we introduce a time-inhomogeneous generalization of convexity. The stochastic case is solved by using an intimate relation to the theory of Gittins-indices in optimal dynamic scheduling. Closed-form solutions are derived under appropriate conditions. Depending on the underlying stochastics, maximizing random measures can be absolutely continuous, discrete, and also singular. In the microeconomic context, it is natural to embed the above maximization problem in an equilibrium framework. In the last part of this thesis, we give a general existence result for such an equilibrium.

In recent years, inflatable supports have come into extensive use and widely in hospital and nursing home for prevent and treat decubitus ulcers, commonly known as bed sores. The bed sore often result from the pressure applied to certain portions of the skin of a bedridden patient. These pressure points typically occur in the area of a bony protuberance which results in cut-off of the blood flow in skin and soft tissue. When the blood flow in the capillaries is blocked due to excessive external interface pressure, the cells in that area begin to die and may result a wound. To avoid the long time pressure applied in the same points for immobile persons. Alternating pressure pads are often used. However, the internal pressure of pads is one of the significant factors of adjusting the pressure between body and air mattress. Currently, most of commercial products are using patient weight to set the internal pressure of pads. The aim of this project is to study the relations between internal pressure and interface pressure. According to the study result, we like to develop an algorism for control the internal pressure. Since the pads are made by soft fabrics, the internal pressure is hard to measure precisely and easy to disturb by the motion of patient. Thus, we want to study a method to measure internal pressure accuracy. By precise measuring and controlling the internal pressure, the patient interface pressure can be provided comfortably and preventing the ulcer.

AbstractWe address two major challenges in setting up probability-based online panels of migrants, using the German Emigration and Remigration Panel Study (GERPS) as an example. The first challenge is potential spatial and social selectivity in unit response when using push-to-web recruitment. To address the first challenge, we draw on a split ballot experiment with return migrants in wave 1 of GERPS. The related analysis uses population register data and geo data. We use logistic regressions to compare unit nonresponse between a push-to-web-only control group (n = 5999) and two sub-samples (each n = 1000) with optional paper and pencil interviews (PAPI). The second challenge is panel attrition. To address the second challenge, we investigate the role of individual-level and survey-related factors for panel consent. The regression analysis uses GERPS data of first-wave respondents, estimating panel consent rates for responding remigrants in general (n = 6395) and in the experiment sample (n = 2130). We find that the provision of an optional paper questionnaire marginally increases the likelihood of response. The positive correlation of PAPI and response rate, however, is counterbalanced by a negative correlation with the likelihood of panel consent. This suggests a trade-off scenario to the detriment of either response rates or panel participation rates.

The performance of PSO is sensitive to the parameter settings. In the literature of evolutionary computation there are two types of parameter settings - parameter tuning and parameter control. Static parameter tuning may lead to poor performance as optimal values of parameters may be different at different stages of run. This leads to parameter control. This chapter has two-fold objectives to provide a comprehensive discussion on parameter settings and on parameter settings of PSO. The objectives are to study parameter tuning and control, to get the insight of PSO and impact of parameters settings for particles of PSO.

However, lack of control on data provided and unethical behaviors that emerged in several scandals has led to many potential customers demonstrating growing concerns about disclosing personal information to companies. This chapter analyzes the interaction between two strategies that firms can use to alter potential customers' cost/benefit evaluation and increase information disclosure: the development of initial trust and compensation. The derived hypotheses are tested by means of three experimental studies, whose findings are compared across two different consumer target groups that potentially show different behaviors regarding digital technologies: students vs. working people.

A new technique of evaluating optimal gain settings for full state feedback controllers for automatic generation control (AGC) problem based on a hybrid evolutionary algorithms (EA) i.e. genetic algorithm (GA)-simulated annealing (SA) is proposed in this chapter. The hybrid EA algorithm can take dynamic curve performance as hard constraints which are precisely followed in the solutions. This is in contrast to the modern and single hybrid evolutionary technique where these constraints are treated as soft/hard constraints. This technique has been investigated on a number of case studies and gives satisfactory solutions. This technique is also compared with linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and GA based proportional integral (PI) controllers. This proves to be a good alternative for optimal controller's design. This technique can be easily enhanced to include more specifications viz. settling time, rise time, stability constraints, etc.

Gastrointestinal (GI) bleed may be encountered fairly commonly by anesthesiologists in routine clinical practice in various settings such as the emergency room, operating rooms, remote nonoperating room locations, and intensive care units. The most common cause of GI bleed is peptic ulcer bleed from the duodenum or stomach. GI bleed can quickly progress to a shock state if not managed promptly and adequately. These patients also suffer from various comorbidities such as coronary artery disease, pulmonary issues, malnutrition, liver disease, hematologic abnormalities, and so on, which calls for comprehensive evaluation and management despite time constraints. Care coordination and communication among various specialists and across multiple settings is essential for optimal outcome in this subset of patients. With advent of advanced endoscopic and interventional radiology techniques, the need for open surgery to control GI bleed is rare in modern-day clinical practice.

We present an additive manufacturing system for 3D printing large-scale objects using natural bio-composite materials. The process, affine to the Direct Ink Writing method, achieves build rate of 2.5cm3/s using a precision dispensing unit mounted on an industrial six-axis robot. During deposition the composite is wet and exhibits thixotropy. As it loses moisture it hardens and shrinks anisotropically. This paper highlights work on controlling the process settings to print filaments of desired dimensions while constraining the operating point to a region where tensile strength is maximum while shrinkage is minimum. Response surface models relating the controllable process settings such as Robot Linear Velocity, Material Feed Rate and Nozzle Offset, to the geometric and physical properties of an extruded filament, are obtained through Face-centered Central Composite Designed experiments. Unlike traditional applications of this technique which involve identifying a fixed optimal operating point, we use these models to first uncover the possible dimensions of a filament that can be obtained within operating boundaries of our system. Process setting predictions are then made through multi-objective optimization of the mathematical models. An interesting outcome of our study is the ability to produce filaments of different shrinkage and tensile strength properties, by solely changing process settings. As a follow up, we identify the optimal lateral overlap and inter-layer spacing parameters to define toolpaths to print 3D structures. If unoptimized, the material’s anisotropic shrinkage and non-linear compression characteristics cause severe delamination, cross-sectional tapering and warpage. Lastly, we show the linear scalability of our shrinkage model in 3D space which allows us to suitably compensate toolpaths to significantly improve dimensional accuracy of 3D printed artifacts.

In this paper, an optimal control strategy (i.e., offset settings system) based on the new Multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization with Differential Evolution (MOPSO-DE) technique is developed and presented. The MOPSO-DE algorithm is used for calculating the optimal positions (i.e., offset settings) for the cutting tools in lathe machines. This optimal control strategy yields interesting results without a need to go through the complex mathematical modeling of the lathe system. The proposed technique is validated considering a real-world industrial system. This strategy is designed to take an action every 20 pieces, and it takes only 2.5 sec to run the code and optimally calculate the new settings. The control strategy is implemented using two high precision linear stepper motors. By implementing the new optimal control strategy, the estimated number of the defective pieces per day can be reduced by 85%.

Processing electromyographic (EMG) signals for force estimation has many unknown variables that can influence the outcome or interpretation of the recorded EMG signal significantly. An array of filtering methods have been proposed over the past few years with the objective to classify motion for use in prosthetic hands. In this paper, we explore the optimal parameter settings of a set of Bayesian based EMG filters with the objective to use the filtered EMG data for system identification. System identification is utilized to establish a relationship between the measured EMG data and the generated force developed by fingers in a human hand. The proposed system identification is based on nonlinear Hammerstein-Wiener models. Optimization is also applied to find the optimal parameter settings for these nonlinear models. Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used to conduct the optimization for both, the optimal parameter settings for the Bayesian filters as well as the Hammerstein-Wiener model. The experimental results and optimization analysis indicate that the optimization can yield significant improvement in data accuracy and interpretation.
