Abstract The nonlinear optical frequency conversions of repetitively pulsed output of a 1941-nm Tm3+ : YAP laser pumped by a cw 1670-nm fibre laser are studied experimentally. Both mid-IR optical parametric oscillation (OPO) and second harmonic generation (SHG) are obtained in the same periodically poled MgO : LiNbO3 crystal with a fan-out domain design by tuning the grating period and temperature. The energy conversion efficiency of the degenerate OPO at 3820 – 3970 nm exceeds 43 % at a 0.5 kHz repetition rate, while the energy conversion efficiency of SHG at 970.5 nm reaches 34 %.

Orange is highly nutritious and a source of phytochemical compounds. However, its by-products are usually discarded. In this study, we evaluated the effect of orange peel (OP) addition in orange jam on sensory, physicochemical, and nutritional characteristics. Four jam formulations were elaborated with different OP levels: OP0 (standard), OP4, OP8, and OP12 (Orange Peel 0, 4, 8 and 12%, respectively). All samples were evaluated for sensory acceptability, and physicochemical and nutritional composition. The addition of 12% orange peel in jam reduced (p < 0.05) the acceptability for all evaluated attributes, as well as overall acceptance and purchase intention. However, OP utilization increased (p < 0.05) the levels of water activity, soluble solids, titratable acidity, and sugars. Soluble solids/titratable acidity ratio, luminosity (L*), and yellow content (b*) decreased in all added OP jams, while red content (a*) increased. No change in the pH and moisture values of the product were observed after OP addition. Ash, protein, lipid, dietary fiber, ascorbic acid, carotenoids, phenolic compounds, and antioxidant capacity values increased after OP addition, while carbohydrate and energy content decreased. A texture test showed that adhesiveness decreased, while gumminess, chewiness, and elasticity increased after OP addition. We concluded that the addition of up to 8% orange peel in jam maintains sensory acceptability similar to that of the standard product. OP addition is a viable alternative to improve some of the product’s physicochemical and nutritional characteristics.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of spraying oregano essential oil (OEO) onto sugar beet pulp silage (SBPS) on silage quality and aerobic stability after opening. A factorial experiment with three replicates of three treatments and four time periods was conducted using laboratory-type plastic silos. The treatments were an untreated control, silage sprayed with 10 ml/75 cm2 OEO, and silage sprayed with 20 ml/75 cm2 OEO. The silages were sampled at 0, 72, 120, and 168 hours after spraying. Temperature, L*, a*, and b* colour values, pH, water-soluble carbohydrates, crude nutrient contents, Fleig score, metabolizable energy (ME) value, lactic acid bacteria (LAB), total live bacteria (TLB), yeast, and mould formation were assessed. Spraying OEO onto SBPS did not affect L*, a*, and b* values, pH, water-soluble carbohydrates, and Fleig score values, but decreased temperature. Spraying OEO onto the silage increased organic matter, ether extract, acid detergent fibre, neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent lignin contents without affecting crude protein, crude fibre, nitrogen free extract, and ME contents. Irrespective of treatment, crude protein, ether extract, acid detergent fibre, acid detergent lignin, nitrogen free extract, Fleig score, and ME contents of silages increased with time after spraying. The OEO spraying reduced LAB, TLB, and yeast contents in silages. In conclusion, OEO spraying onto opened SBPS reduced LAB, TLB, and yeast formation and stopped mould growth up to 72 hours without affecting their nutritional properties, suggesting that OEO could be used to ensure the stability of SBPS. High-power optical parametric oscillators (OPOs), as mature radiation sources in mid-infrared (MIR), degenerate gradually with wavelength increase, mainly above 3700 nm. Using a periodically poled magnesium-oxide-doped lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) as the nonlinear crystal, we build a high-power signal-resonant OPO pumped by ytterbium-doped fiber laser (YDFL). To improve the OPO’s output power at ~3.8 μm, the parameters, such as the pump beam’s waist diameter and location, the curvature radius of the output coupler and the length of MgO:PPLN, are discussed in detail. When pump power is 79 ± 4 W with a repetition rate of 200 kHz, the OPO provides up to 8 ± 0.4 W average power in beam quality with M2 factors of ~1.84 and ~1.69 in the two axes. Under the highest output power, the center wavelength of the idler beam is 3768.4 nm with a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) bandwidth of ~18.6 nm. When the output power reaches ~6.3 W, its power stability is 1.6% root mean square (RMS) over 7 h. Further analysis of the factors affecting OPO’s performance and simple structure are critically essential for compact OPO prototypes with a capacity of high output power.

Fiber-feedback optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) incorporate intracavity fibers to provide a compact high-energy wavelength-tunable laser platform; however, dispersive effects can limit operation to the sub-picosecond regime. In this research article, we modeled pulse propagation through systems of cascaded fibers, incorporating SMF-28 and ultra-high numerical aperture (UHNA) fibers with complementary second-order dispersion coefficients. We found that the pulse duration upon exiting the fiber system is dominated by uncompensated third-order effects, with UHNA7 presenting the best opportunity to realise a cascaded-fiber-feedback OPO.

The research reports broadband, continuous-wave (CW), mid-infrared generation based on an optical parametric oscillator (OPO), pumped by an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) fiber source. The ASE fiber source has a ytterbium (Yb)-doped fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) structure. By injecting another fiber laser with high power and a narrow linewidth into the nonlinear crystal, the phase-matching difference frequency generation (DFG) can be realized at a low pumping threshold. It is shown that during the down-conversion of the ASE fiber source, the intracavity DFG can steadily and effectively generate a broadband mid-infrared laser, with a central wavelength of 3713 nm. The bandwidth of the mid-infrared laser is 122 nm. The pump power of 2 W generates a 0.238 W mid-infrared laser with a pump-idler conversion efficiency of 11.6%. It has tremendous application potential in the research of broadband CW mid-infrared lasers.

ABSTRACTThe aim of this work is to improve bone-implant bonding. This can, potentially, be achieved through the use of an implant coating composed of fibre networks. It is hypothesised that such an implant can achieve strong peri-prosthetic bone anchorage, when seeded with human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). The materials employed were 444 and 316L stainless steel fibre networks of the same fibre volume fraction. The present work confirms that hMSCs are able to proliferate and differentiate towards the osteogenic lineage when seeded onto the fibre networks. Cellular viability, proliferation and metabolic activity were assessed and the results suggest higher proliferation rates when hMSC are seeded onto the 444 networks as compared to 316L. Cell distribution was found uniform across the seeded surfaces with 444 showing a somewhat higher infiltration depth.

In the fiber ring laser loop, longitudinal modes break up into orthogonal polarization modes because of birefringence. The frequency of the polarization mode beat (PMB) signals is determined by the cavity birefringence. In the OEO loop, a microwave signal with its frequency equal to the PMB signal is generated. By feeding the oscillation mode to modulate the optical loop, mode-locking can be achieved, rendering the mode spacing of the laser equal to the frequency of the oscillating OEO mode. We can estimate the birefringence variation by measuring the oscillating frequency of the COEO. To validate the proposed sensing system, a circular birefringence change is introduced in a magneto-optic crystal via the Faraday rotation effect. Then, the magnetic field sensing is implemented. Such configuration can achieve single longitudinal oscillation and realize high-speed and high-precision measurements.

Using oil palm trunk (OPT) layered with empty fruit bunch (EFB), so-called hybrid plywood enhanced with palm oil ash nanoparticles, with phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin as a binder, was produced in this study. The phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resins filled with different loading of oil palm ash (OPA) nanoparticles were prepared and used as glue for layers of the oil palm trunk (OPT) veneer and empty fruit bunch fibre mat. The resulting hybrid plywood produced was characterised. The physical, mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of the hybrid plywood panels were investigated. The results obtained showed that the presence of OPA nanoparticles significantly affected the physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of the plywood panels. Significant improvements in dimension from water absorption and thickness swelling experiments were obtained for the plywood panels with the highest OPA nanoparticles loading in PF resin. The mechanical properties indicated that plywood composites showed improvement in flexural, shear, and impact properties until a certain loading of OPA nanoparticles in PF resin. Fracture surface morphology also showed the effectiveness of OPA nanoparticles in the reduction of layer breakage due to force and stress distribution. The thermal stability performance showed that PF filled OPA nanoparticles contributed to the thermal stability of the plywood panels. Therefore, the results obtained in this study showed that OPA nanoparticles certainly improved the characteristic of the hybrid plywood.

ABSTRACTThis paper will discuss the structure-property model developed that correlates the tensile modulus to the elastic properties and angular distribution of constituent graphitic layers for carbon fiber derived from a polyethylene precursor. In addition, a high-temperature fiber tensile device was built to enable heating of carbon fiber bundles at a variable rate from 25 °C to greater than ∼2300 °C, while simultaneously applying a tensile stress. This capability combined with synchrotron wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD), enabled observation in situ and in real time of the microstructural transformation from different carbon fiber precursors to high-modulus carbon fiber. Experiments conducted using PAN- and PE-derived fiber precursors reveal stark differences in their carbonization and high-temperature graphitization behavior.

The ultra-long optical fiber of optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) and the high spectral purity of the high frequency microwave signal open the possibility of high-accuracy distance measurement at long range. Sensitivity of distance measurement is highly depending on the length of the cavity. Base on the theory of optoelectronic oscillator and the distance measurement method, the sensitivity is calculated and the demand for spectral-purity of microwave signal are proposed and verified by experiments. Consider the demands of the measurement sensitivity, the spectral purity and the measurement range, as well as the error introduced by environment, the fiber length of OEO would be about 1km when the resolution of frequency measurement is 1Hz.

The study aims to examine the impact of O2O services that have become a ubiquitous part of our daily lives, with a specific focus on the widely used O2O service, KakaoT. Despite a recent setback in the form of a fire that caused inconvenience and harm to its users, some temporarily switched to alternative O2O services but eventually returned to KakaoT, which can be seen as a demonstration of the fact that these alternatives do not fully understand the needs of the users. The research endeavors to distinguish the characteristics of O2O services used by users and analyze the effect on their behavioral intentions through two-factor coexistence. The results of this study are expected to provide valuable insights for existing and future companies providing O2O services

ABSTRACTIn many tropical countries coconut (coir) fiber production is a major source of income for rural communities. The Caribbean has an abundance of coconuts but research into utilizing its by-products is limited. Environmentally friendly coir fibers are natural polymers generally discarded as waste material in this region. Research has shown that coir fiber from other parts of the world has successfully been recycled. This paper therefore investigates the mechanical properties of Caribbean coir fiber for potential applications in civil engineering.Approximately four hundred fibers were randomly taken from a coir fiber stack and subjected to retting in both distilled and saline water media. The mechanical properties of both the retted and unretted coir fibers were evaluated at weekly increments for a period of 3 months. Tensile strength test, x-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron micrographs were used to assess trends and relationships between fiber gauge lengths, diameter, tensile strength and Young’s modulus. Diameters ranged between 0.11 mm-0.46 mm, while fiber samples were no longer than 250 mm in length. The tensile strength and strain at break decreased as the gauge length increased for both unretted and retted fibers. The opposite occurred for the relationship between the gauge length and Young’s modulus. Additionally, the tensile strength and modulus decreased as the fiber diameter increased. Neither distilled nor saline water improved the coir fiber’s crystalline index. Scanning electron micrographs qualitatively assessed fiber surfaces and captured necking and microfibril degradation at the fractured ends. The analysis revealed that the tensile strength, modulus, strain at break and crystallinity properties of the Caribbean coir fibers were comparable to commercially available coir fiber which are currently being used in many building applications.

The non-standard opto-electronic oscillator (OEO) operation is discussed in the generation mode of a single-side optical harmonic on the base of external and internal modulation of the laser signal. The OEO mathematical model is formed basing on laser differential equations for the closed radiofrequency network. With the help of the model offered, the phase noise of OEO radiofrequency oscillations is analyzed. It is shown that phase noise reduction in the circuit with external modulation depends not only on the increased laser power and growth of the geometric length of the optical fiber, but on reduction of the laser phase noise.
