This paper reports the results from a dataset comprising 9794 post-occupancy evaluation (POE) surveys from 77 Australian open-plan offices. This paper specifically focuses on a sub-set of 20 offices (n = 2133), identified from ranking 10 offices each, with the least (n = 1063) and highest (n = 1070) satisfaction scores, respectively. The satisfaction scores were evaluated on the basis of seven factors (i.e., building/office aesthetics and quality, thermal comfort and indoor air quality, noise distraction and privacy, personal control, connection to outdoor environment, maintenance and visual comfort, and individual space). Using the POE survey data from 20 offices, regression analyses and two-way ANOVA tests were carried out to understand the differences in occupants’ satisfaction and perceived productivity arising from open-plan offices. According to the statistically significant regression analyses results, it was identified that building/office aesthetics and quality (β = 0.55, p < 0.001) and noise distraction and privacy (β = 0.33, p < 0.001) were the two strongest predictors contributing perceived productivity in low-performance offices. Two-way ANOVA test results for the 10 high-performance offices indicate that the perceived productivity was strongly associated with the office’s physical configuration, the employees’ working experience, and the working hours at that office.

This cross-sectional survey has compared subjective outcomes obtained from workers in shared (2–5 occupants) and open-plan (+5 occupants) offices, related to irrelevant speech, which is the noise that is generated from conversations between colleagues, telephone calls and laughter. Answers from 1078 subjects (55% in shared offices and 45% in open-plan offices) have shown that irrelevant speech increases noise annoyance, decreases work performance, and increases symptoms related to mental health and well-being more in open-plan than in shared offices. Workers often use headphones with music to contrast irrelevant speech in open-plan offices, while they take a break, change their working space, close the door or work from home in shared offices. Being female, when there are more than 20 occupants, and working in southern cities without acoustic treatments in the office, make it more likely for the occupants to be annoyed by irrelevant speech noise in open-plan offices. While, working in southern cities and with acoustic treatments in the office makes it more likely that noise annoyance will be reported in shared offices. Finally, more than 70% of the interviewed in open-plan offices were willing to reduce their voice volumes when advised by a noise monitoring system with a lighting feedback.

This article discusses the implementation of open-plan offices among public sector employees. The so called open-plan offices are debated, although it seems to be a popular way of designing office spaces. An open-plan office refers to two or more office desks for individuals which are layed out in one open space. The main objective of this article is to review how public sector employees experienced the transition to open-plan offices and how the implementation proceeded. This article will also review whether the government has a formal policy regarding the extensive change to place employees in open-plan offices. Few domestic studies have been conducted on employees’ experience of moving into open plan offices and this is the first study of public sector employees’ attitudes towards such changes. In this study two public organizations and two ministries which all had recently implemented open-plan offices were selected. A survey was sent to 182 employees at these organizations and ministries. 90 employees participated, answering questions about how the implement of change was delivered, leaving the response rate at almost 50%. Government officials were interviewed to find out whether a policy was formulated for the implementation of open-plan workspaces. The main conclusion is that half of the participants like being in an open-plan office, but the majority prefers to be in a closed office. Despite that, most participants feel there is less privacy to do their work, noise has increased, and concentration has diminished. One third of participants feels that productivity has reduced. Furthermore, no policy has been formulated by the government regarding the implement of open-plan workspaces.

This study explores the association between office design and (a) the psychosocial work environment and (b) the emotional health among 4352 employees in seven different office designs. A multivariate linear regression analysis was performed with adjustments for age and educational level for men and women separately. Results show that psychosocial factors and emotional exhaustion differ between both office designs and between genders, with best outcomes in cell offices, except for psychological demands that are rated the most favourable in shared-room offices. Cell offices and small open-plan offices show a strong beneficial association with emotional exhaustion in women. Among men, hot-desking is most problematic regarding psychosocial work environment and emotional exhaustion. Women rate the psychosocial environment low in combi-office and report emotional exhaustion in small open offices.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the effects of environmental factors in open-plan offices with the same characteristics but with different workstation partition heights (1.10, 1.40 and 1.65 m) on perceptual evaluations of office employees. Design/methodology/approach In this research, the effects of environmental factors on employees’ perceptual evaluations in open-plan offices at the Gölbaşı Region of Ankara were measured with a detailed questionnaire. The research data were obtained from 81 employees who agreed to fill out the questionnaire and who use open-plan offices. Findings It was found that the office environments with 1.65 m workstation partition heights were more favorably assessed for each of the items of planning and of privacy that form the dependent variables compared to the office environments with 1.10 and 1.40 m partition heights. On the other hand, the office environments with the 1.10 and 1.40 m partition heights were more favorable for lighting items than the 1.65 m partition height office environments. In addition, young employees had a more positive tendency toward the perceptions of environmental factors, including different workstation partition heights in open-plan offices, compared to older employees. Research limitations/implications Results of this research provide a fundamental contribution for the impact of various partition heights that have substantial implications on the perceptions of open-plan office environments. At this point, as open-plan offices have important effects on the quality of employees’ work experiences, the influence of various partition heights on the performance of employees should be emphasized in future studies. The diversity of performance (reading comprehension, calculation, design, drawing, etc.) will be an important decision. Originality/value The significant contribution of this research is that it provides valid data and makes a valuable contribution to the body of knowledge in open-plan office design.

Offices are evolving rapidly to facilitate organizational cost reductions and to better support contemporary working practices. We investigate relationships between the design of contemporary offices (physical proximity and breakout areas) and autonomy in predicting individual outcomes (ease of communication, job satisfaction, and well-being). We extend Social Interference Theory to include features of contemporary office design and explicitly explore the moderating role of autonomy. Working in differing office configurations of a global engineering company, 406 employees provided data. Access to breakout areas was strongly related to ease of communication, higher job satisfaction, and well-being. In the absence of breakout areas, employees with higher autonomy were able to better manage the challenges arising from contemporary offices. Practical implications include incorporating breakout areas to enhance employee experience within open-plan offices, using job design to optimize employee experience in open-plan offices, and manager and employee involvement in office design.

This paper reports the acoustic issues of open plan office environments. According to a detailed research based on the scientific literature of the most suitable acoustic descriptors recommended for the open plan offices analysis, the main typological-functional configurations of these environments have been analyzed in order to identify six spatial typologies. The variation of acoustic parameters of these typologies has been evaluated by using a sound pyramid tracing software. The analysis procedure was calibrated in a case study of an office environment, where a measurement campaign was carried out. Results point out that the acoustic improvement of open plan offices can usually be achieved by introducing a sound absorbing false ceiling and dividing panels between working positions, but there are different issues depending on spatial geometries of the office. Better results are referred to office typologies characterized by reduced height and equal plan dimensions.

In a controlled field study, twelve office employees with computer-intensive jobs were monitored during the redesign of their work environment. Before office redesign, they worked in closed offices with four walls and sitting height, non-adjustable workstations. Then they worked in more open offices with three walls and sit-stand adjustable VDT workstations. The effects of this office redesign were evaluated three months post-occupancy. During the three months, employees worked standing for two hours every day. The results suggest that change in the office layout, i.e. open versus closed, increased the interaction and communication between employees. However, it significantly decreased employees' perceived privacy, and increased the amount of visual and noise distractions. In the offices with sit-stand adjustable furniture, subjects felt more energetic and less tired by the end of the workday.

This paper reports the survey results from a field monitoring study of office occupancy and air-conditioner use pattern of an office building in Seoul, Korea, from 20 July to 29 September 2009. The survey has an aim to reveal the relationship between the indoor environment conditions and occupancy; and the use patterns of air-conditioners and energy consumption in offices. The results showed that the average occupied time of the investigated offices was 15.48 h per day for normal weekdays, which was longer than expected occupancy schedules assumed for offices for the design prediction of building energy consumption. This study also presents the hourly profiles of air-conditioner use and evaluates the effect of longer occupancy period on energy consumption for air cooling in open-plan offices in Korea. The findings of this study could contribute to inform building energy simulation based on realistic office occupancy profile provided by the survey, which would therefore inform better operation of air-conditioners and more efficient use of energy in building management.

Different configurations of the physical environment of office work are rapidly changing the way office workers behave and perform at work. In particular, organisations today are progressively accommodating their employees in open plan offices (OPOs). In this article, we focus on the OPO and discuss its future and implications for research and practice. Specifically, we build on recent advances in the field to propose that new OPO configurations will require new forms of work behaviour involving new processes and practices, and new research approaches. In addition, we discuss possible areas of work that OPO environments of the future might affect; for example, work design, interpersonal processes, noise and distractions, human resource management (HRM) practices and leadership. Along these lines, we suggest future research directions and make recommendations to navigate the intersection of organisational behaviour (OB) and OPO research and practice. JEL Classification: M19

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relation between the spatial intervention of open-plan offices in a university, the consequential change in work practices of faculty members and how these practices appropriate the designed space. Design/methodology/approach The authors executed a two-year longitudinal ethnographic study following the case of the science faculty, which moved from a traditional office setting to open-plan offices. The authors studied the space and interviewed staff before, during and after the introduction of open-plan offices. Findings Findings show that the new spatial setting triggered staff members to attribute certain meanings and practices of adaptation which were, partly, unintended by the design of the open-plan offices. Research limitations/implications This paper contributes empirically grounded insights into the (un)intended consequences of a spatial intervention in terms of how staff members, far from being passive, attribute meaning and alter their work practices leading to unprecedented organizational changes. Practical implications For change consultants, facility managers and university managers the outcomes of this paper are highly relevant. Social implications Large budgets are spent on new office concepts at universities but the authors do know little about the relation between spatial (re)design and organizational change. Originality/value The introduction of new office concepts, spatial redesign and co-location is for many academics highly emotional.

Purpose This paper aims to determine the extent to which employees’ experiences of acoustic comfort, well-being and productivity in open-plan offices are determined by specific characteristics (including demographic information, task characteristics, and personality traits). Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire was distributed to the occupants of three open-plan office sites and was completed by 166 employees in total. Findings The results indicated that acoustic comfort in open-plan offices is largely determined by noise sensitivity. Higher noise sensitivity was associated with more negative ratings of acoustical quality, more perceived disturbance by speech and more difficulties in concentration. More negative experiences were also reported by employees with lower interactivity with colleagues. Practical implications There is significant inter-individual variability in experiences of acoustic comfort, well-being and productivity in open-plan offices. As such, workplace practitioners should consider acoustic and behavioural solutions for introducing a greater diversity of functional workspaces within the office, so that employees can choose the most suitable working area for their requirements. Originality/value Whereas the majority of past acoustics research has been laboratory-based, this study is conducted in real office environments with a representative sample of knowledge workers.

This longitudinal study examines the impact of office type on employees’ perception of managers’ leadership behaviours, which is an unexplored area. The expanding research related to activity-based flexible offices (AFOs) has mainly focused on employees’ working conditions and health outcomes, not on the changes in leadership behaviours when moving from traditional offices to AFOs. Office workers (n = 261) from five office sites within a large Swedish government agency were included in a controlled study of a natural intervention. At four sites, traditional offices were replaced by AFOs, while workers at one site with no relocation acted as the control. The same employees rated different leadership behaviours in a web-based questionnaire at baseline and at one follow-up. The analyses showed that relocations from cell and open-plan offices to AFOs were clearly related to a decrease in the perception of relation-oriented leadership behaviours. However, coming from open-plan offices to AFOs also decreased the perception of the other leadership dimensions. As expected, the control group was stable over time in their perceptions. This emphasises the need for organisations to provide managers with prerequisites so they can keep up with behaviours that support employees’ performance and health when office designs and ways of working are changed.

An office is a place where office task is carried out. An important building component that provides a view to the outside is the window. This paper aims to investigate the effect of office and view factors on occupants’ satisfaction. The research uses a cross-sectional survey method, data was collected from five offices in Kogi State in Nigeria with a total of 267 respondents. The purposive sampling method was used because it was specifically for occupants of shared-room offices and open-plan offices. The analysis was performed using SPSS Version 23 and AMOS Version 22 for modelling. Seven salient factors were identified to be interrelated in the relationship model. The results revealed a valid model and the effect of each construct on occupants’ satisfaction was moderate. The overall squared multiple correlation value is moderate. The study extends the existing knowledge of the relationship between office and window view factors on occupants’ satisfaction. Also, it provides suggestions for building stakeholders such as Architects, Builders, Interior Designers, and Facility Managers that can be applied to improve the satisfaction level of office space users, thereby creating a sustainable office environment.

Noise is the most frequent reason for complaints about environmental conditions in the workplace. It is associated with individual health and well-being and decreased productivity and performance. This study identified a set of acoustic strategies for open-plan workplaces and examined a case study applying those to four open-plan offices in the United States. The set of measures was defined based on a literature review and a focus group interview with 17 experts. A total of four topics were identified as key performance indicators of proper acoustic environments in the open-plan workplaces. A total of 19 items were then developed within these 4 topics as the protocols for planning acoustic strategies for workplace health and well-being. In the case study, the level of acoustic performance for workplace health and well-being was highest in the Dallas office (27.5 points out of a total of potential 40.0) followed by the Minneapolis office (26.0). Both offices outperformed the other offices in achieving space planning principles to control noises and occupant noise control in open spaces for acoustical privacy. A further examination on the relationships between acoustic strategies and other health and well-being key performance indicators in these offices suggests that guidance to increase occupants’ auditory comfort, well-being, and performance should be sought by designers in a holistic and integrative way.

Purpose Research on the physical work environment and employee territorial behavior in the field of organizational behavior is limited. In particular, while the prevalence of territorial behaviors in organizations is not new, little is known about how the physical work environment (e.g. open-plan offices) may influence the enactment, interpretation and reactions to territoriality. The purpose of this paper is to explore the connection between the physical environment of work (e.g. open-plan office), employee territorial behaviors (including infringement) and affective environment. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected by means of in-depth-interviews from 27 participants from two large Australian public organizations involved in recruitment, marketing, consulting and education. Findings Results revealed that employees’ personalization in the open-plan office is driven by the nature of their tasks, appointment, duration of time spent on their desk, level of adaptation to the open-plan office configurations and the proximity of desks to senior managers, hallways and passers-by. Additionally, affective environment has a critical effect on employee personalization and the enactment and perception of territoriality and infringements in open-plan offices. Additionally, the authors found that the affective environment is dynamic and that employees in open-plan offices experienced emotional contagion (positive and negative). Research limitations/implications Due to the demographic make-up of one of the participating organizations, less than a third of participants were male. While the data did not suggest any disparity in the territorial behaviors of male and female, future research should include an even representation of male and female participants. Similarly, the authors did not examine the impact of ethnicity and cultural background on employees’ territoriality. However, given that the workforce is increasingly becoming multicultural, future research should explore how ethnicity might impact the use of space, work processes and productivity in open-plan office. Additionally, scholars should continue to tease out the impact of affective environment (positive and negative) on team processes (e.g. conflict, communication, collaboration and the development of team mental models) in the open-plan office. Practical implications The results indicate some practical implications. Noise and distraction are indicated in the results. Therefore, human resource managers and organizational leaders should work with employees to develop some ground rules and norms to curb excessive noise in the open-plan office. Additionally, the authors found in the current study that the affective environment is dynamic and that employees in open-plan offices experienced emotional contagion (positive and negative). Managers should watch out for how individuals react to the prevailing emotions and moods in the open-plan office with the intention of diffusing negative emotions as quickly as possible, for example, by changing the topic under discussion in the open-plan office. The results speak to the need for more active collaboration and engagement between policy makers, workspace architects, designers and employees especially prior to the building of such workspaces. Social implications The results suggest that effective employee interactions in open-plan office may be enhanced by positive emotional contagion and office affective environment. Originality/value So far, little is known about the impact of the physical work context (e.g. open-plan offices) on the enactment, interpretation and reactions to territoriality. The current paper explores the connection between the physical environment of work (e.g. open-plan office), employee territorial behaviors (including infringement) and affective environment. The findings demonstrate for the first time and especially in an open-plan office that ownership and personalization of objects and workspaces are more likely to be driven by the amount of time spent at one’s desk, the nature of employees’ appointments and tasks. Additionally, the present research is one of the first to report on affective environment dynamism in the open-plan office.

Open plan offices are both popular and controversial. We studied the response of a group moving from shared, but closed offices to an open plan office. The main data source reported here is a workplace satisfaction survey given pre-move, post-move, and to a lab baseline comparison group at the same organization, with some additional data from observations and interviews. Workers moving to the open plan office appreciated the flexible support for collaboration and the space’s appearance. There was lower satisfaction related to space for private concentrated work, temperature control, and ability to have private conversations. There were also some statistical interactions suggesting more positive responses by males and less positive responses by introverts; analysis was limited by small sample size. Observations and interviews gave further insight into open plan “neighborhoods” and the design of ad hoc spaces.

In order to better serve the users of wood desks in open-plan offices, the Kano model is used to analyze the problems encountered by users in the office. Combined with quality function deployment (QFD), this study conducted an analysis of the weighted average of users’ needs and the importance of engineering measures of product technical characteristics. The proposed system uses an integrated Kano–QFD model to identify users’ specific needs and scene experience with a more complete service system. Through the hybrid approach of the Kano model and QFD development and design technology, the wood desks in open-plan offices are optimized to improve the rationality and scientific nature of office furniture and enhance its market competitiveness.

The ISO 22955 standard " Acoustic quality of open plan offices " was published in may 2021. It aims to provide principles, descriptors, and measurement methods to characterize acoustics, which are easy to use and correspond to the perception of the acoustical environment by the occupants of the spaces. The scope of the standard is the acoustics of open-plan offices and, more specifically, cognitive effects of noise, i.e. acoustic comfort and noise disturbance in association with the activity. After more than a year of use of the standard, this document proposes to take stock of it and to identify potential paths of reflection for a possible future revision. Among the points of discussion considered, are the consequences of the evolution of office work, activities and concepts in the tertiary sector (flex office, co-working, teleworking, etc.), and their implication on acoustic quality. Another fundamental matter is the relevance of the indicators used in the standard and the associated required values.

Understanding the relationship between thermal comfort and adaptive behaviour in office environments is important for designing sustainable and occupant-centric buildings. This study investigates the thermal sensation, comfort preferences, and adaptive behaviours of occupants in five Indian and two Lithuanian offices. Indoor environmental parameters were measured, and online thermal comfort surveys were carried out. In total, 274 responses were collected. Differences between the two countries were observed in perception of the indoor thermal environment, comfort preferences, and adaptive behaviours. In the Indian offices, despite experiencing higher temperatures and relative humidity, most occupants reported feeling thermally neutral or slightly cool. In the Lithuanian offices (measured in the heating season), a third of the occupants felt slightly cool and another third slightly warm. Occupants in the Indian offices (limited direct access to temperature control, greater prevalence of business attire) showed a higher preference for adjusting the temperature. The occupants in the Lithuanian offices (access to temperature control, more flexible attire) preferred more frequently to adjust their clothing. Consumption of warm or cold beverages for thermal adaptation was equally preferred in the two countries. About 86% of the occupants who did not choose any adaptations reported being comfortable, compared to 65% of those who did. These findings highlight the associations between adaptive behaviour and thermal comfort, emphasising the need to consider individual preferences, environmental factors, and cultural norms in designing comfortable indoor environments.

The phenomenon of the COVID-19 pandemic forces the world community to transform into the world of work through the implementation of work from home. Many offices, especially in Indonesia, make use of various information systems and applications to facilitate work. Automation studies in the office environment are being studied again. The classic problem faced by most offices in Indonesia is that the automation system used is not integrated, one of which is the filing system. Most filing systems are limited to storing databases and tracking information. The archiving system model that is considered integrated, not limited to database storage and information retrieval, is the open journal system used by Indonesian national journals. This study aims to analyze the open journal system as a model for implementing the concept of office automation. The research object used is the open journal system used by accredited national journals in the social and humanities field. Data obtained through participatory observation of the open journal system used, in-depth interviews with journal managers, and literature studies. The data were processed and analyzed using the data triangulation approach. The results showed that the open journal system is an implementation of the concept of comprehensive office automation. However, it is necessary to conduct a study regarding the security and authentication of the metadata that is created on the system.

Metode penelitian ini adalah yuridis empiris, dengan mengkaji ketentuan hukum yang berlaku serta apa yang terjadi dalam kenyataan masyarakat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa akibat hukum bagi notaris yang tidak membuka kantor, Majelis Pengawas Daerah bisa merekomendasikan kepada Majelis Pengawas Wilayah dan Majelis Pengawas Pusat untuk menjatuhkan sanksi terhadap notaris yang kantor tidak dibuka. Diharapkan Majelis Pengawas Daerah lebih tegas dalam melakukan pengawasan terhadap notaris yang tidak membuka kantor, melakukan pemeriksaan dan pembinaan secara rutin kepada notaris supaya tidak ada notaris yang tidak membuka kantor, dan notaris bisa melaksanakan tugas dan kewajibannya sesuai dengan perundang-undangan yang berlaku. Supervision of Notary That Does not Open an Office This study aims to examine the legal consequences of notaries who do not open offices, linked to their supervision. After taking an oath and inauguration, the notary is obliged to carry out his position significantly, one of which must open an office. The fact is still found notary who does not open an office. The research method is empirical juridical, by reviewing the applicable legal provisions and what is happening in the reality of society. The results showed that the legal consequences for notaries who did not open offices, the Regional Supervisory Council could recommend to the Regional Supervisory Council and the Central Supervisory Council will impose sanctions. It is hoped that the Regional Supervisory Council will be more assertive in supervising notaries, conduct regular checks and guidance so that there are no notaries who do not open offices, and notaries can carry out their duties and obligations in accordance with applicable laws.

Today’s office buildings adopt open-plan settings for collaboration and space efficiency. However, the open plan setting has been intensively criticized for its adverse user experiences, such as noise, privacy loss, and over cooling. The provision of personal control in open-plan work environments is an important means to alleviating the adverse perceptions. This research is to investigate the relationship between the availability of personal controls and the degree of control over the physical environment, as well as their effectiveness in alleviating adverse perceptions in open-plan workplaces. The study combined three systematic occupant survey tools and collected responses from open-plan offices in Shenzhen, China. Specifically, this survey covered 12 personal controls in open-plan workplaces; respondents were asked to report their degree of control over the physical environment and also were required to report if they had adverse perceptions such as sick building syndrome in their offices. The results showed that most of the 12 personal controls supported perceived degree of control over the physical environment but only half of them were negatively associated with adverse perceptions. Non-mechanical controls, such as windows and blinds, were found to be more effective than mechanical controls such as fans and air-conditioning in alleviating adverse perceptions. Conflicts were found between task/desk lights and other personal controls. The research generates important evidence for the interior design of open-plan offices.

A major source of noise complaints in open-plan offices has consistently been co-workers talking nearby or talking on the phone. Various masking sounds such as white noise and pink noise have been explored to reduce the intelligibility level of speech from adjacent co-workers in open-plan offices. Recently, nature soundscapes such as water, rainfall or birdsong have been introduced instead of conventional white or pink noises. Water sounds with limited acoustic variation have shown more effectiveness than nature sounds with high acoustic variation such as birdsong. This study examined four types of background sounds in a controlled lab environment that simulated a typical open-plan office in a large pharmaceutical company in the United Kingdom. The purpose was to understand cognitive performance, satisfaction and preference, and physiological responses among the four types of background sounds: no external acoustic noise, typical daily office noise, white noise and spring water sound. The study employed three methods: an assessment of cognitive performance to measure memory, distractibility and decision-making; a survey to understand subjective satisfaction and preference; and use of wearable devices to monitor physiological responses. Two different types of wearable devices were used: pulse oximeter and electrodermal activity sensor to compare physiological responses to the four types of sounds. This article discusses discrepancies found between participants’ satisfaction/preference and their cognitive performance under the four background sounds and potential future implications of masking sounds in open-plan offices.

Sound masking systems are commonly used in open-plan offices to generate a controlled minimum level of background sound, in order to decrease the signal-to-noise ratio of intrusive speech and blend out transient office noise. However, a question in the acoustical design of offices is whether the self-generated noise of occupants may alone be sufficient to provide the background sound level conditions necessary to achieve similar levels of speech privacy and acoustic comfort as sound masking systems. This study examines the relationship between occupant-perceived speech privacy and acoustic comfort under three different acoustic scenarios (no masking, controlled 42 dBA, and 47 dBA masking sound levels). The study was conducted pre-COVID-19 in two separate open-plan offices located in Quebec, Canada that at the time were close to full occupancy. Employees completed subjective questionnaires before and after each change in conditions, focusing on how the sound environment impacted their comfort and work performance during the study. Statistical results show that the occupants were significantly more satisfied during the two sound masking conditions in comparison to the no-masking condition, where only the occupant-generated and exterior/mechanical system noise was present as the background sound. Implications for open-plan offices with lower occupancy conditions post-COVID-19 are discussed.

Abstract Blockchain Elements Integrated Multinational Search (BEIMS) is a response to an ongoing discussion about the search and examination procedures employed in patent offices, relaunched in 2018 when German law firms sent an open letter to the President of the European Patent Office. The BEIMS concept turns away from patent examiners working by themselves in isolation, and instead involves experts from different offices working in close co-operation. BEIMS integrates elements of Blockchain Technology – such as decentralized network, competition and consensus building – with the participation of several national and/or regional patent offices, and involves financial incentives. The co-operating patent offices are coequal and, as a consequence, a multinational search report is generated with cited prior art determined and evaluated by patent examiners of different patent offices in due time.

The soundscape approach has been utilised in recent research for residential environments, but applications to indoor working environments remain limited. This study investigated the suitability of affective quality evaluations of open-plan office acoustics. Perceptual assessments were completed by occupants of eight open-plan office floorplates, using affective dimensions outlined in PD ISO/TS 12913-3:2019 and indoor soundscape studies. Participant demographic, contextual, work-related quality, and psychological well-being data were collected. Workstation noise levels were measured following BS ISO 22955:2021. Principal component analysis identified Pleasantness, Eventfulness, and Emptiness as the main perceptual dimensions, cumulatively explaining 56% of the total variance. Results indicate the suitability of the PD ISO/TS 12913-3:2019 two-dimensional model for open-plan offices. The perceived presence of human sounds negatively correlated with ISO Pleasantness yet positively correlated with ISO Eventfulness. Participant gender and aural diversity mediated ISO Pleasantness. Psychological well-being and work-related quality correlated positively with soundscape pleasantness. No correlations were found between level-based acoustical indicators—equivalent continuous sound level (LAeq), level exceeded 10% (LA10) and 90% (LA90) of the time, level variability (LA10–LA90) and Liveliness—and perceptual scores. A conceptual representation of open-plan office soundscape perception is presented, offering a framework for evaluating and designing workspaces to enhance well-being.

Room acoustic models are often used to predict parameters that describe acoustic conditions in various spaces, also in open-plan offices. An open-plan office of 81 m² was experimentally studied using 22 different room acoustic conditions. The conditions were built using typical absorption materials, office screens, and furniture. The acoustic conditions were measured according to ISO 3382-3. The measurements were modelled using two methods: A. room acoustic simulation software based on ray-tracing, and B. a simple empirical model. The precision was assessed by the difference of predicted and measured single-number values (SNVs) of ISO 3382-3. For method A, the modelled and measured SNVs were very similar in conditions with low sound absorption and low screen height. The agreement was worse in conditions with high sound absorption on the ceiling and walls, and over 1.6-m-high sound-absorbing screens. For method B, the agreement of SNVs was on the same level in most of the conditions. Consequently, SNVs with method B were more precise than with method A in conditions with high screens and high sound absorption, but less precise in conditions with low sound absorption and lower screens.

The acoustic conditions of open-plan office spaces influence the well-being and productivity perceived by users. However, with an inadequate evaluation of the workspace, acoustic design in open-plan offices can be a factor that alters user performance. Such is the case in Mexico, where there are no adequate standards to evaluate specific acoustic conditions such as intelligibility. For this reason, this case study aims to evaluate different types of measurement methods for intelligibility. This study was carried out at a university in northern Mexico. The sound measurements were based on the Mexican standard for noise analysis and the ISO 3382-part 3 standards for acoustic measurements for open-plan offices. The psychoacoustic parameters evaluated were reverberation and intelligibility, using objective methods determined on S/N and subjective methods based on loss of consonant, where it was analyzed the distance between the sound source and zones classified by building design characteristics. The results indicated at which points the intelligibility effects increased. We also observed that reverberation remained stable in this office and that the subjective methods presented a larger measured sound effect than the objective methods. Open-plan offices have become widely adopted in various industries as a workplace environment. However, this office layout type suffers from speech privacy, which can be represented by the acoustic parameter known as the Speech Transmission Index (STI). ISO 3382-3:2012 provides guidelines for calculating the acoustic parameters of a room tailored explicitly for open-plan offices. However, the existing method in ISO 3382-3:2012 requires a parallel layout of workstations to determine the STI value, which is hardly found in modern office settings. This study presents a technique to predict the ideal values of rP and rD, based on the relationship between %Alcons and the Speech Transmission Index (STI) for a specific workstation, using linear regression and in-situ measurements. The analysis of acoustic conditions in an open-plan office reveals that modified techniques can predict the acoustic quality in a modern office layout. The D2, S values indicate good acoustic quality, but the Lp, A, S,4m values do not meet the required standard. Using %Alcons equations, the study shows how to predict distraction distances and categorize workstations as 'Distracted' or 'Not distracted'. The results indicate only a small percentage of workstations allow for private communication.
