Real-time diagnostics of complex technical systems such as power plants are critical to keep the system in its working state. An ideal diagnostic system must detect any fault in advance and predict the future state of the technical system, so predictive algorithms are used in the diagnostics. This paper proposes a novel, computationally simple algorithm based on the Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average model to solve anomaly detection and forecasting problems. The good performance of the proposed algorithm was confirmed in numerous numerical experiments for both anomaly detection and forecasting problems. Moreover, a description of the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average Fault Detection (ARIMAFD) library, which includes the proposed algorithms, is provided in this paper. The developed algorithm proves to be an efficient algorithm and can be applied to problems related to anomaly detection and technological parameter forecasting in real diagnostic systems.

Online onboard aeroengine models (OBEMs) have been widely used in health management, fault diagnostics, and fault-tolerant control. A mismatch between the OBEM and the actual engine may be caused by a variety of factors such as health degradation or sensor fault and may influence the effectiveness of the systems mentioned above. However, mismatch caused by unpredictable sensor fault is hardly distinguished from that caused by health degradation through the tuning process. A fault-tolerant OBEM tuning structure is provided to perform the online tuning function when health degradation and sensor fault coexist. This system includes three parts that include improved fault diagnostics and isolation (IFDI), a fault-tolerant OBEM tuning system (FTOTS), and a channel switching module. IFDI is used to distinguish the cause of mismatch and provide fault information, a FTOTS is used to complete an online tuning process based on information obtained from the IFDI, and the channel switching module is used to switch the working process from the IFDI to the FTOTS. Several simulation results show that this system is able to distinguish the causes of mismatch and complete online tuning in the case of sensor faults.

Modern NIR analysers produce valuable data for closed-loop process control and optimisation practically in real time. Thus it is highly important to keep them in the best possible shape. Quality assurance (QA) of NIR analysers is an interesting and complex issue because it is not only the instrument and sample handling that has to be monitored. At the same time, validity of prediction models has to be assured. A system for fully automated QA of NIR analysers is described. The system takes care of collecting and organising spectra from various instruments, relevant laboratory, and process management system (PMS) data. Validation of spectra is based on simple diagnostics values derived from the spectra. Predictions are validated against laboratory (LIMS) or other online analyser results (collected from PMS). The system features automated alarming, reporting, trending, and charting functions for major key variables for easy visual inspection. Various textual and graphical reports are sent to maintenance people through email. The software was written with Borland Delphi 7 Enterprise. Oracle and PMS ODBC interfaces were used for accessing LIMS and PMS data using appropriate SQL queries. It will be shown that it is possible to take actions even before the quality of predictions is seriously affected, thus maximising the overall uptime of the instrument.

AbstractLaser-driven acceleration of particle beams is an emerging modality under research for biomedical applications. The spatially resolved diagnostics of laser-accelerated proton bunches is crucial for their application. The RadEye detector, featuring up to 10 cm x 5 cm area of online complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) detector made of 48 μm pixels, is established for x-ray, proton and ion beam diagnostics. We exploit the usually undesired ‘Image lag’ phenomenon of incomplete pixel reset to generate 2D-images with a larger dynamic range than the single frame range of 12-bit. Using 532 nm laser pulses and computer simulations for single-slit diffraction, calibration factors to stack multiple readouts were successfully derived to quantitatively reconstruct spatial information about an optical beam and hence extend the dynamic range of the detector compared to a single frame. The final goal is focus quantification for a permanent magnet quadrupole system for protons and terawatt (TW-class) laser focus diagnostics.

AbstractDigital twins have gained a lot of attention in modern day industry, but practical challenges arise from the requirement of continuous and real-time data integration. The actual physical systems are also exposed to disturbances unknown to the real-time simulation. Therefore, adaptation is required to ensure reliable performance and to improve the usability of digital twins in monitoring and diagnostics. This study proposes a general approach to the real-time adaptation of digital twins based on a mechanism guided by evolutionary optimization. The mechanism evaluates the deviation between the measured state of the real system and the estimated state provided by the model under adaptation. The deviation is minimized by adapting the model input based on the differential evolution algorithm. To test the mechanism, the measured data were generated via simulations based on a physical model of the real system. The estimated data were generated by a surrogate model, namely a simplified version of the physical model. A case study is presented where the adaptation mechanism is applied on the digital twin of a marine thruster. Satisfactory accuracy was achieved in the optimization during continuous adaptation. However, further research is required on the algorithms and hardware to reach the real-time computation requirement.

Analytical redundancy technique is of great importance to guarantee the reliability and safety of aircraft engine system. In this paper, a machine learning based aeroengine sensor analytical redundancy technique is developed and verified through hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation. The modified online sequential extreme learning machine, selective updating regularized online sequential extreme learning machine (SROS-ELM), is employed to train the model online and estimate sensor measurements. It selectively updates the output weights of neural networks according to the prediction accuracy and the norm of output weight vector, tackles the problems of singularity and ill-posedness by regularization, and adopts a dual activation function in the hidden nodes combing neural and wavelet theory to enhance prediction capability. The experimental results verify the good generalization performance of SROS-ELM and show that the developed analytical redundancy technique for aeroengine sensor fault diagnosis based on SROS-ELM is effective and feasible.

AbstractOne of the main functions of gas turbine monitoring is to estimate important unmeasured variables, for instance, thrust and power. Existing methods are too complex for an online monitoring system. Moreover, they do not extract diagnostic features from the estimated variables, making them unusable for diagnostics. Two of our previous studies began to address the problem of “light” algorithms for online estimation of unmeasured variables. The first study deals with models for unmeasured thermal boundary conditions of a turbine blade. These models allow an enhanced prediction of blade lifetime and are sufficiently simple to be used online. The second study introduces unmeasured variable deviations and proves their applicability. However, the algorithms developed were dependent on a specific engine and a specific variable. The present paper proposes a universal algorithm to estimate and monitor any unmeasured gas turbine variables. This algorithm is based on simple data-driven models and can be used in online monitoring systems. It is evaluated on real data of two different engines affected by compressor fouling. The results prove that the estimates of unmeasured variables are sufficiently accurate, and the deviations of these variables are good diagnostic features. Thus, the algorithm is ready for practical implementation.

The article presents an innovative system for non-contact high voltage (HV) measurement, which extends the measurement capabilities of a portable partial discharges (PD) monitoring system intended for diagnostics of power transformers. The proposed method and the developed measuring system are based on the use of a capacitive probe, thanks to which the high voltage measurement is safe (galvanic separation from the objects at ahigh potential). It is also flexible because the voltage ratio of this system can be configured in a wide range by changing the probe’s position. The proposed solution makes the portable PD monitoring system fully autonomous and independent of the substation systems and devices. The article presents both the concept of the non-contact HV measurement system and its practical implementation. The procedure for determining the voltage ratio and measurement uncertainty, which is at an acceptable level of 1–5% in laboratory conditions, was discussed in detail. In addition, the article discusses the digital filtering and wavelet de-noising methods implemented in the software of the monitoring system, which makes it possible to measure the voltage in the presence of strong electromagnetic disturbances occurring at the substation. Finally, the results of field tests carried out on a 250 MVA power transformer are presented, which confirmed the high accuracy of the HV measurement using a capacitive probe and the advantages of this technique.

Presented is the detection, isolation, and estimation of faults that occur in the intake air path of internal combustion engines during steady state operation. The proposed diagnostic approach is based on a static air path model, which is adapted online such that the model output matches the measured output during steady state conditions. The resulting changes in the model coefficients create a vector whose magnitude and direction are used for fault detection and isolation. Fault estimation is realized by analyzing the residual between the actual sensor measurement and the output of the original (i.e., healthy) model. To identify the structure of the steady state air path model a process called system probing is developed. The proposed diagnostics algorithm is experimentally validated on the intake air path of a Ford 4.6L V-8 engine. The specific faults to be identified include two of the most problematic faults that degrade the performance of transient fueling controllers: bias in the mass air flow sensor and a leak in the intake manifold. The selected model inputs include throttle position and engine speed, and the output is the mass air flow sensor measurement.

Single-phase earth faults are one of the main problem of the distribution electrical networks with voltage 6 - 35 kV with isolated neutral. Single-phase earth fault is one of the reasons decrease of the power quality and the reliability of power supply. The paper presents the theoretical base of the monitoring parameters selection during the single-phase earth fault process and its practical implementation as an installed system at a power substation with a 110/10 kV level voltage. The hardware part of the feeder monitoring system allows implementing the determination of feeder with fault and the phase of this feeder with fault without the need to switch off of the feeders. The software part of the system allows for ongoing monitoring of feeders with built-in alarm and viewing the event archive on the supervisor computer.

The online community resource Phytophthora database (PD) was developed to support accurate and rapid identification of Phytophthora and to help characterize and catalog the diversity and evolutionary relationships within the genus. Since its release in 2008, the sequence database has grown to cover 1 to 12 loci for ≈2,600 isolates (representing 138 described and provisional species). Sequences of multiple mitochondrial loci were added to complement nuclear loci-based phylogenetic analyses and diagnostic tool development. Key characteristics of most newly described and provisional species have been summarized. Other additions to improve the PD functionality include: (i) geographic information system tools that enable users to visualize the geographic origins of chosen isolates on a global-scale map, (ii) a tool for comparing genetic similarity between isolates via microsatellite markers to support population genetic studies, (iii) a comprehensive review of molecular diagnostics tools and relevant references, (iv) sequence alignments used to develop polymerase chain reaction-based diagnostics tools to support their utilization and new diagnostic tool development, and (v) an online community forum for sharing and preserving experience and knowledge accumulated in the global Phytophthora community. Here we present how these improvements can support users and discuss the PD's future direction.

Abstract The article discusses the problem of diagnostic informativeness of exhaust gas temperature measurements in turbocharged marine internal combustion engines. Theoretical principles of the process of exhaust gas flow in turbocharger inlet channels are analysed in its dynamic and energetic aspects. Diagnostic parameters are defined which enable to formulate general evaluation of technical condition of the engine based on standard online measurements of the exhaust gas temperature. A proposal is made to extend the parametric methods of diagnosing workspaces in turbocharged marine engines by analysing time-histories of enthalpy changes of the exhaust gas flowing to the turbocompressor turbine. Such a time-history can be worked out based on dynamic measurements of the exhaust gas temperature, performed using a specially designed sheathed thermocouple. The first part of the article discusses possibilities to perform diagnostic inference about technical condition of a marine engine with pulse turbocharging system based on standard measurements of exhaust gas temperature in characteristic control cross-sections of its thermal and flow system. Selected metrological issues of online exhaust gas temperature measurements in those engines are discusses in detail, with special attention being focused on the observed disturbances and thermodynamic interpretation of the recorded measuring signal. Diagnostic informativeness of the exhaust gas temperature measurements performed in steady-state conditions of engine operation is analysed in the context of possible evaluations of technical condition of the engine workspaces, the injection system, and the fuel delivery process.

This paper presents a water-level control system in a drum boiler. The system was equipped with a fault tolerant control–type diagnostic system. The paper presents the results of tests conducted on the fault tolerant control system implemented in the water-level control system in a boiler drum. The diagnostics of the measurement circuits was carried out online. To that end, the appropriate partial models were developed and tested. This allowed for the application of analytical redundancy for the measurement circuits. The paper also identifies the influence of diagnostics and fault tolerance on the values of reliability indices and operating safety of a power unit. Fault tolerant control systems increase the safety of a power unit operation, and the studies described in the paper directly contribute to them. These kinds of systems have not been used so far in power unit automation. Site tests confirmed the validity of the acquired concept for the diagnostic system. Fault tolerant control systems have not been commonly applied in power engineering yet. Studies of the water-level control system in a steam drum using the fault tolerant control system for the measurement circuits as presented in the paper are original ideas, providing a new solution. All control systems made for the study fulfil their role in a satisfactory way, which results in a minor deviation in the water-level adjustment in the boiler drum. The tests confirmed the efficiency of the fault detection algorithm. The created models of the water level and flows proved to be successful. Under a no-fault condition of the facility, there were no errors in the diagnoses and the values of all residua were below the detection thresholds. This was achieved despite a high value of measurement noises. The residua helped detect minor faults.

A novel modelling paradigm for online diagnostics and prognostics for autonomous systems is presented. A model for the autonomous system being diagnosed is designed using a logic-based formalism. The model supports the run-time ability to verify that the autonomous system is safe and reliable for operation within a dynamic environment. The paradigm is based on the philosophy that there are different types of semantic relationships between the states of different parts of the system. A finite state automaton is devised for each sensed component and some of the non-sensed components. To capture the interdependencies of components within such a complex robotic platform, automatons were related to each other by semantic relationships. Modality was utilised by the formalism to abstract the relationships and to add measures for the possibility and uncertainty of the relationships. The complexity of the model was analysed to evaluate its scalability and applicability to other systems. The results demonstrate that the complexity is not linear and a computational time of 10 ms was required to achieve run-time diagnostics for 2200 KB of knowledge for complex system interdependences. The ability to detect and mitigate hardware related failures was demonstrated within a confined space autonomous operation. Our findings provide evidence of the applicability of our approach for the significant challenge of run-time safety compliance and reliability in autonomous systems.

Since automotive alternators serve as the primary sources of power onboard of vehicles, the online diagnostics of technical conditions thereof is a relevant task. An advantage of temperature as a diagnostic parameter is sensitivity to most faults at the early stage of their development. Physical modeling of faults (stator one-line open fault, stator turn-to-turn short circuit, stator winding phase-to-phase short circuit, circuit opening and short circuit of rectifier diodes) has been done by forced increase (decrease) of electrical resistance between alternator elements. In order to measure alternator temperature, it has been brought to steady thermal state within 20 minutes. It has been found that the alternator temperature in case of faults can increase the rated temperature by 10-30 °С even when the alternator operates without load. An algorithm has been developed to find alternator faults by evaluating the thermal state thereof, which can become a basis of an onboard automatic online diagnosing system of an automotive alternator.

Nevertheless, we can simulate. In this paper we present a simulation-based framework for the calibration of agent-based models with distributional output based on indirect inference. The article discusses the approach to the implementation and use of an expert system for servicing passenger cars using the example of Mercedes cars. After analyzing the development of trends in artificial intelligence, we came to the conclusion that one of the main directions in this area is real-time expert systems. The direction of expert systems is the development of programs that, when solving difficult tasks for a human expert, obtain results that are not inferior in quality and efficiency of solutions obtained by an expert. This approach allows you to create almost any online diagnostic complexes faster than using traditional methods. An important direction in the automotive industry is an accurate and reliable forecast assessment of the main indicators of reliability and serviceability of the car as a whole. Technical diagnostics is an integral part of the technological processes of acceptance, maintenance and repair of vehicles at service stations and is a process of determining the technical condition of the object of diagnosis with a certain accuracy. Purpose of the work: to reveal the essence of the expert approach at the present stage of development of diagnostic systems when servicing passenger cars. The theme of the work is revealed by the example of a modern diagnostic complex with elements of an expert system for diagnosing Mercedes cars. In particular, the work of Star Diagnosis software, which ensures the success of car diagnostics, is considered. A complex, a service specialist, or an expert system has the ability to analyze the condition of the car, the severity of the malfunction, and select methods for repairing the car without having a car at the service station. Ultimately, based on the development of electronic systems and the number of executing elements of various control units in the car, if possible, output a huge amount of information that we can use when servicing it, we can conclude that today the prospect of the development of expert methods and means of diagnosing cars using expert systems is very promising.

The developed architecture is small, and it is tested on the largest online image database. The dataset consists of 3064 T1-weighted contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance images. The proposed architecture’s performance is tested using a combination of two different data division methods, and two different evaluation methods, and by training the network with the original and augmented dataset. Using one of these data division methods, the network’s generalization ability in medical diagnostics was also tested. The best results were obtained for record-wise data division, training the network with the augmented dataset. The average accuracy classification of pixels is 99.23% and 99.28% for 5-fold cross-validation and one test, respectively, and the average dice coefficient is 71.68% and 72.87%. Considering the achieved performance results, execution speed, and subject generalization ability, the developed network has great potential for being a decision support system in everyday clinical practice.

This article describes a vibration model connected by individual nodes of a DC motor. The purpose of the article is a mathematical model allowing to predict the work of machines with a depreciation resource and search for ways to increase the information content of assessing the functioning of the rolling stock condition without dismantling them. Currently, the operational reliability of the DC motor is reduced after the development of the service life. Study and evaluation of the vibration effect on the brush-collector node. The main components of the DC motor (bearings, electrical brushes) are unrecoverable. Therefore, any interference with their normal operation leads to premature wear of the entire DC motor. Existing methods for life-extending maintain the operational reliability of a DC motor equal or close to the passport data for several years. This model allows vibration diagnostics without dismantling the DC motor and stopping the rolling stock. The mathematical model describes the oscillations of each node of the DC motor in the direction of movement of the rolling stock, showing the excess of the permissible value. After mathematical processing of the results, a machine reliability model under study is obtained (usually in the form of polynomials) as a function of the needed parameters – the influencing factors. Due to this model, pre-detected defects can save on repairs and maintenance in the future. This model is the basis of software for online diagnostics. The proposed model allows providing an objective use of repair and restoration compositions depending on the current technical condition, which will lead to an increase in the service life of the mechanism and savings in operating costs. On the one hand, extending the operating life of a DC motor should produce an economic effect, and on the other hand, technical measures to maintain operational reliability cause an increase in material costs.

Although Chinese medicine treatments have become popular recently, the complicated Chinese medical knowledge has made it difficult to be applied in computer-aided diagnostics. The ability to model and use the knowledge becomes an important issue. In this paper, we define the diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as discovering the fuzzy relations between symptoms and syndromes. An Ontology-oriented Diagnosis System (ODS) is created to address the knowledge-based diagnosis based on a well-defined ontology of syndromes. The ontology transforms the implicit relationships among syndromes into a machine-interpretable model. The clinical data used for feature selection is collected from a national TCM research institute in China, which serves as a training source for syndrome differentiation. The ODS analyzes the clinical cases to obtain a statistical mapping relation between each syndrome and associated symptom set, before rechecking the completeness of related symptoms via ontology refinement. Our diagnostic system provides an online web interface to interact with users, so that users can perform self-diagnosis. We tested 12 common clinical cases on the diagnosis system, and it turned out that, given the agree metric, the system achieved better diagnostic accuracy compared to nonontology method—92% of the results fit perfectly with the experts’ expectations.

6502 Background: There is a scarcity of expert oncologists in the world. Patients in nonurban areas have poor access to evidence-based treatment decisions and worse outcomes. In India, there are ~1600 experts for 1.8 Million patients. Created in May 2014, “TMC NCG Navya Online” is an expert opinion service based on an informatics system. We prospectively study its real-world impact. Methods: Navya exhaustively searches and outputs evidence and experience based treatment options for an individual patient. Its accuracy was validated in trials at TMC (one of the world’s largest tertiary care centers) and UCLA-OVMC. Navya’s patient data summary and treatment options are rapidly reviewed and vetted (1-2 minutes) on mobile by experts from TMC and NCG, (consortium of 104 cancer centers in India). Expert decisions are converted into a simple language report for patients. System generated evidence based information on diagnostics, regimens, side effects etc are also provided. To prospectively assess impact, from July to December 2016, all patients were asked via phone follow-up: 1. If report was shared with treating provider, 2. Final treatments delivered. Results: 9361patients from 22 developing countries registered with TMC NCG Navya Online. 3402 expert decisions were provided and converted into 2614 simple language reports. 5229 patients received system generated evidence based information. Median time to deliver a report was 24 hours. The prospective sample was 582 decisions with a 75% (n = 436) follow-up rate. 74% of reports were shared with treating providers. 73% of TMC NCG Navya’s decisions, (n = 306), were the final treatments delivered. Common reasons for non-implementation included decline in ECOG status and not testing biomarkers (ER/PR etc). Conclusions: Expert oncologists use Navya to provide rapid online opinions to patients across 22 developing countries. Patients shared the expert opinions with their providers and received evidence-based treatments. Expanding the reach and impact of such a service to nonurban USA and the world, can maximize outcomes for patients without ready access to expertise.

This way, it will provide us with an opportunity to turn developing (forming) procedures into diagnostic and turn diagnostic means into developing. Such a conceptual and technological symbiosis allowed us to create a computer networking system “CREO DATUM” enabling its users to carry out creative-digital diagnostics and psycho-pedagogical support of reflexive development of students’ creative potential at the same time based on the material of one of the natural sciences taught within the school curriculum, namely chemistry. This system includes a database of domain-specific creative tasks by solving which students demonstrate their thinking abilities; digitalization of this process in the online mode allows teachers to monitor and assess the dynamics of such parameters of their creative potential as divergence and criticality. This tool enables the teacher and student to predict the area of future development promptly and select further creative tasks on the subject via “CREO DATUM” taking into consideration the strengths and weaknesses of previous creative efforts. Experimental testing of the “CREO DATUM” system allowed us to categorize the students who took part in the research. Four groups have been identified: children with high creative potential, ones with low creative potential, divergents, and analysts. Methodological recommendations have been developed for each category of students based on the material of a natural science subject aimed at psychological and pedagogical support of their development.

Condition monitoring (CM) in the energy industry is limited by the lack of pre-classified data about the normal and/or abnormal plant states and the continuous evolution of its operational conditions. The objective is to develop a CM model able to: (1) Detect abnormal conditions and classify the type of anomaly; (2) recognize novel plant behaviors; (3) select representative examples of the novel classes for labeling by an expert; (4) automatically update the CM model. A CM model based on the never-ending learning paradigm is developed. It develops a dictionary containing labeled prototypical subsequences of signal values representing normal conditions and anomalies, which is continuously updated by using a dendrogram to identify groups of similar subsequences of novel classes and to select those subsequences to be labelled by an expert. A 1-nearest neighbor classifier is trained to online detect abnormal conditions and classify their types. The proposed CM model is applied to a synthetic case study and a real case study concerning the monitoring of the tank pressure of an aero derivative gas turbine lube oil system. The CM model provides satisfactory performances in terms of classification accuracy, while remarkably reducing the expert efforts for data labeling and model (periodic) updating.
