Abstract This work examines the cellular pathophysiology associated with the weakened bone matrix found in a murine model of osteogenesis imperfecta murine (oim). Histomorphometric analysis of oim/oim bone showed significantly diminished bone mass, and the osteoblast and osteoclast histomorphometric parameters were increased in the oim/oim mice, compared with wild-type (+/+) mice. To assess osteoblast activity, a rat Col1a1 promoter linked to the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase reporter transgene was bred into the oim model. At 8 d and 1 month of age, no difference in transgene activity between oim and control mice was observed. However, at 3 months of age, chloramphenicol acetyl transferase activity was elevated in oim/oim;Tg/Tg, compared with +/+;Tg/Tg and oim/+;Tg/Tg. High levels of urinary pyridinoline crosslinks in the oim/oim;Tg/Tg mice were present at all ages, reflecting continuing high bone resorption. Our data portray a state of ineffective osteogenesis in which the mutant mouse never accumulates a normal quantity of bone matrix. However, it is only after the completion of the rapid growth phase that the high activity of the oim/oim osteoblast can compensate for the high rate of bone resorption. This relationship between bone formation and resorption may explain why the severity of osteogenesis imperfecta decreases after puberty is completed. The ability to quantify high bone turnover and advantages of using a transgene that reflects osteoblast lineage activity make this a useful model for studying interventions designed to improve the bone strength in osteogenesis imperfecta.

In Germany, employers are obliged to offer “operational integration management” (OIM) services to employees returning from long-term sick leave. OIM aims to improve employees’ workability and to prevent future sick leave or early retirement. This study examined (i) to what extent OIM services are offered to eligible employees, (ii) to what extent offers are accepted and (iii) the determinants of both outcomes. We used data from a cohort of employees eligible for OIM. Thirty-four potential determinants were assessed in 2013 (i.e., the baseline) using participant reports. In 2015 (i.e., the follow-up), participants were asked (a) whether they had ever been offered OIM services by their employer, and (b) whether they had accepted that offer (i.e., the outcomes). We estimated relative risks by multivariable binomial regression to identify predictors based on backward elimination. In total, 36.0% of the participants were offered OIM services and 77.2% of them accepted that offer. The likelihood of an OIM offer at follow-up was elevated in participants with mental impairment, cancer or long-term absenteeism and increased with organizational justice, neuroticism, and company size. The likelihood of accepting that OIM offer was positively associated with mental impairment and decreased with increasing company size.

While orientation imaging microscopy (OIM) via automatic analysis of electron backscatter diffraction patterns (EBSPs) has become routine, methods for analyzing results obtained by OIM are still maturing. Interrogating the OIM data to distinguish between deformed, recovered and recrystallized material in a polycrystalline sample is one example. An advantage for using OIM data in such a case is that the corresponding textures can also be determined providing more information regarding these processes. This work reports on two different approaches for distinguishing between these structures from OIM data on a sample of partially recrystallized low-alloy steel.The first approach is, in a sense, patterned after that used in optical microscopy; where, deformed material can be identified because it is more deeply etched than recrystallized material. A similar approach Can be used in OIM by considering the quality of EBSPs. EBSPs from deformed material are more diffuse than patterns obtained from recovered or recrystallized material. At each measurement point in an OIM scan an image quality (IQ) parameter is determined for the corresponding EBSP. The IQ is mapped onto a gray scale and an image is formed from the OIM data as shown in Fig. 1. In this image the measurement points are shaded so that points with associated EBSPs of high IQ receive a lighter shade of gray than points with a lower IQ. The deformed regions can then be identified by the darker regions in the OIM map. However, this method has some drawbacks. The first is that the IQ parameter is not sensitive enough to distinguish recovered material from recrystallized material.

Using the new method known as Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIM), characterization of mesoscale aspect of the internal structure of polycrystalline materials in the two-dimensional section plane has become routine. However, in some applications which primarily focus either on the characterization of interface types or on their connectivity, OIM is rather inefficient since only the scan points that lie adjacent to the interfaces are used to determine interface character. When the OIM grid spacing is dictated by the precision with which the interfacial in-plane inclination must be determined in the section plane, the efficiency with which conventional OIM can harvest interfacial data is rather poor.In this paper a new approach and system of microscopy is described, called the Mesoscale Interface Mapping System (MIMS). MIMS overcomes the challenges associated with OIM by directing the beam to the vicinity of interfaces which have been identified by a microstructural contrast image.

The collagen molecule, which is the building block of collagen fibrils, is a triple helix of two α1(I) chains and one α2(I) chain. However, in the severe mouse model of osteogenesis imperfecta (OIM), deletion of the COL1A2 gene results in the substitution of the α2(I) chain by one α1(I) chain. As this substitution severely impairs the structure and mechanics of collagen-rich tissues at the tissue and organ level, the main aim of this study was to investigate how the structure and mechanics are altered in OIM collagen fibrils. Comparing results from atomic force microscopy imaging and cantilever-based nanoindentation on collagen fibrils from OIM and wild-type (WT) animals, we found a 33% lower indentation modulus in OIM when air-dried (bound water present) and an almost fivefold higher indentation modulus in OIM collagen fibrils when fully hydrated (bound and unbound water present) in phosphate-buffered saline solution (PBS) compared with WT collagen fibrils. These mechanical changes were accompanied by an impaired swelling upon hydration within PBS. Our experimental and atomistic simulation results show how the structure and mechanics are altered at the individual collagen fibril level as a result of collagen gene mutation in OIM. We envisage that the combination of experimental and modelling approaches could allow mechanical phenotyping at the collagen fibril level of virtually any alteration of collagen structure or chemistry.

Introduction. We report a case of ossification of the interosseous membrane (OIM) of the leg in a football player who had no history of severe local traumas. A review of the literature of the OIM of the leg in athletes was also carried out.Case Report. A 38-year-old Caucasian male patient complained of pain on lateral aspect of the leg when playing football. Pain progressively worsened until he had to stop the sporting activity. Radiographs, and then CT and MRI, showed OIM in the middle third of the left leg. MRI showed inflammation of tibia periosteum and bone adjacent to the ossification, which was then excised. Two months after surgery the patient returned to play football.Conclusion. A thorough analysis of the literature revealed three types of OIM of the leg in athletes. Type I usually occurs after a syndesmosis ankle sprain, Type II appears to result from a tibia fracture, and Type III, of which only one fully recorded case has been published, is probably caused, as in our patient, by repetitive minor traumas to the leg. Awareness of the existence of Type III OIM can avoid erroneous diagnoses leading to useless investigations and treatments.

Mice harboring the Col1a2 oim mutation ( oim) express dentinogenesis imperfecta. To determine the effect of Col1a2 genotype on tissue mechanical properties, we compared Young’s modulus and hardness of dentin in the 3 Col1a2 genotypes. Upper incisors were tested by nanoindentation. Genotype had a significant effect on Young’s modulus, but there was not a simple mutant allele dosage relationship. The effect of genotype on hardness did not reach significance. Hardness and Young’s modulus were greater near the dento-enamel junction than near the pulp chamber. Greater hardness and Young’s modulus values near the dento-enamel junction reflected continued mineralization of the dentin following its initial synthesis. Analysis showed the mechanical data to be consistent with Fourier transform infrared and backscattered electron microscopy studies that revealed increased mineralization in oim bone. Analysis of the data suggests that clinical fragility of teeth in oim mice is not due to deficiencies of hardness or Young’s modulus, but may be due to defects in post-yield behavior or resistance to fatigue damage.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how environmental design features of a green building contribute to the formation of employees’ organization image (OIM) through better environmental awareness (EAW) within employees. Design/methodology/approach Based on a comprehensive literature review on environmental design features of a building, a theoretical model was proposed for investigation. Three putative paths linking workspace (WSP) to EAW, departmental space (DSP) to EAW and EAW to OIM were then tested relying on a survey data of 362 employees collected from three Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified buildings by using structural equation modeling methodology as prescribed by Hair et al. Findings Significant evidence was found in support of all three purposed paths. Further, the study found that workspace and the DSP together explained around 46 percent of the variance in employee’s EAW, which then explained around 54 percent of the variance in the formation of the employees’ OIM. Research limitations/implications The study drew data only from green certified organizations. Future research should involve other green organizations or a larger sample of green buildings. The size and character of the sample were restricted by organizational constraints. Practical implications The organizations need to be extremely cautious of green concerns during the design phase in order to capitalize on the yields of better employees’ OIM. It also motivates the other organizational group toward the green building concept to increase the employees’ EAW and to enhance organizational values and image. Originality/value While the green concept has been a significant research topic for more than decades, barely any research has been conducted that focuses specifically on environmental design features of a green building on employees’ EAW and OIM. This study tries to make a link between green building design features with employees’ EAW and OIM. These links are rare in Indian perspective.

This paper describes a new form of orientation imaging microscopy: Adaptive Orientation Imaging Microscopy or AOIM. In standard OIM experiments the local orientation of the crystal lattice is determined with respect to a suitable reference frame by acquiring and indexing electron back-scattering (EBS) patterns on a square or hexagonal grid of sampling points. Since its invention, OIM has been extensively used to characterize polycrystalline materials. With the fast development of computers and CCD camera systems in the past few years, the standard OIM can now acquire and index of the order of 4000 EBS patterns per hour.In a typical OIM experiment one is usually interested in either the overall texture of. the sample, or in the types and relative frequencies of grain boundaries. In the former case the proper way of acquiring orientation data involves the use of an equidistant grid of sampling points. In the latter case, however, a large fraction of the acquisition time is wasted sampling the grain interior, which does not provide any information about the grain boundaries.

This study examined the organizational impression management (OIM) strategies adopted by the US law firms on Twitter. The Diction software package for textual analysis of nearly 10,000 tweets, coupled with statistical analysis, was used to assess the significant differences among law firms over 5 years. Although higher revenue law firms were found to exhibit higher certainty and optimism than lower revenue firms, analysis via repeated measures analysis of variance did not show significant differences. When companies’ OIM strategies were observed over a period of 5 years, there was a statistically significant difference in activity between 2011 and 2014. The findings add to the body of corporate communications research through examination of social media OIM strategies used by financially successful US law firms.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a bone fragility disorder that is usually caused by mutations affecting collagen type I. We compared the calvaria bone tissue transcriptome of male 10-week-old heterozygous Jrt (Col1a1 mutation) and homozygous oim mice (Col1a2 mutation) to their respective littermate results. We found that Jrt and oim mice shared 185 differentially expressed genes (upregulated: 106 genes; downregulated: 79 genes). A total of seven genes were upregulated by a factor of two or more in both mouse models (Cyp2e1, Slc13a5, Cgref1, Smpd3, Ifitm5, Cthrc1 and Rerg). One gene (Gypa, coding for a blood group antigen) was downregulated by a factor of two or more in both OI mouse models. Overrepresentation analyses revealed that genes involved in ‘ossification’ were significantly overrepresented among upregulated genes in both Jrt and oim mice, whereas hematopoietic genes were downregulated. Several genes involved in Wnt signaling and transforming growth factor beta signaling were upregulated in oim mice, but less so in Jrt mice. Thus, this study identified a set of genes that are dysregulated across various OI mouse models and are likely to play an important role in the pathophysiology of this disorder.

A high-resolution serial sectioning specimen preparation technique is described for acquisition of electron backscattered diffraction orientation imaging microscopy (OIM) data. The primary objective is to develop a method to reproducibly remove a controlled thickness of material (a serial section) from a polycrystalline Ta sample while producing quality surfaces for OIM imaging. This is integrated with the ability to accurately measure the amount of material removed with each iteration and experimentally register the ensuing OIM scans.A Si metrology device is fabricated by lithographic techniques to facilitate the measurement of the amount of material removed with each lapping iteration and the alignment of each serial section image. This metrology device contains a herringbone pattern with two orthogonal etched lines oriented at 45 degrees and one vertical line normal to the OIM surface. The metrology device is epoxied to a polished side surface of the Ta sample. Due to the orthogonality of the lines, the thickness of material removed equals one-half the total linear motion of the etched lines as seen in cross-section. To accurately measure the distance between the grooves after each lapping iteration, a high-resolution (0.1 μm) linear measuring system is attached to the table of a light metallograph.

Alendronate (Aln) has been the first-line drug for osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), while the comparable efficacy of Aln and strontium ranelate (SrR) remains unclear. This study is aimed at comparing the effects of SrR and Aln treatment in a mouse model of OI. Three-week-old oim/oim and wt/wt female mice were treated with SrR (1800 mg/kg/day), Aln (0.21 mg/kg/week), or vehicle (Veh) for 11 weeks. After the treatment, the average number of fractures sustained per mouse was significantly reduced in both SrR- and Aln-treated oim/oim mice. The effect was comparable between these two agents. Both SrR and Aln significantly increased trabecular bone mineral density, bone histomorphometric parameters (bone volume, trabecular number, and cortical thickness and area), and biomechanical parameters (maximum load and stiffness) as compared with the Veh group. Both treatments reduced bone resorption parameters, with Aln demonstrating a stronger inhibitory effect than SrR. In contrast to its inhibitory effect on bone resorption, SrR maintained bone formation. Aln, however, also suppressed bone formation coupled with an inhibitory effect on bone resorption. The results of this study indicate that SrR has comparable effects with Aln on reducing fractures and improving bone mass and strength. In clinical practice, SrR may be considered an option for patients with OI when other medications are not suitable or have evident contraindications.

It is well known that the “channeling contrast” and EBSD pattern formation, which is the basis for “orientation imaging microscopy” (OIM), is highly sensitive to specimen surface quality in SEM studies. Typically, specimens for these studies are prepared by a combination of mechanical grinding then chemical etching or electropolishing. As an alternative to the chemical step(s) in this technique, we report a method based upon broad ion beam etching equipment [1]. This alternative method is more universal and reliable for enhanced channeling contrast and EBSD/OIM of metallic materials.A variety of polycrystalline metallic specimens were etched in an instrument dedicated for etching and coating SEM specimens [1] and examined in the SEM for channeling contrast and OIM mapping. Fig. la is a SEM image of an annealed titanium sheet specimen in as-received condition showing a well-defined surface texture. It can be seen that channeling contrast is absent, presumably due to the existence of a surface layer formed during the manufacturing process.

Introducción: Osteopetrosis Infantil Maligna (OIM) es un grave e inusual desorden genético debido a una actividad osteoclástica anormal.Objetivo: Reportar lactante en quien se documentó una Osteopetrosis Infantil Maligna, revisando aspectos diagnósticos y terapéuticos más relevantes.Caso clínico: Reportamos un lactante de 10 meses de sexo masculino en quien se confirmó OIM tras presentar plaquetopenia y visceromegalias. En su historial destacó ser primer hijo de padres no consanguíneos, y entre sus hallazgos presentó hepatoesplenomegalia, plaquetopenia y anemia graves, compromiso sensorial visual y auditivo e infecciones a repetición. El diagnóstico fue confirmado mediante estudio genético, el cual identificó 2 mutaciones heterocigotas en el gen TCIRG1. Se realizó trasplante de precursores hematopoyéticos, sin haber presentado recuperación hematológica, falleciendo por enfermedad veno oclusiva.Discusión: La OIM es una enfermedad inusual, grave y de inicio temprano, siendo necesario un elevado índice de sospecha ante hepatoesplenomegalia y falla medular. El diagnóstico temprano y el trasplante de precursores hematopoyéticos son las únicas intervenciones potencialmente curativas de esta entidad letal.

AbstractThis study used an optimum interpolation method (OIM) to construct a sea surface wind speed (SSW) dataset with hourly resolution based on merged wind speed analysis products from four satellites [AMSR-2, ASCAT, OceanSat Scatterometer (OSCAT), and WindSat]. To validate this hourly SSW dataset, the OIM dataset was compared with observations obtained from moored buoys. These buoy observations were also compared with the products of each of the four satellites individually. The root-mean-square differences and the correlation coefficients between the buoy observations and the OIM dataset indicated that the accuracy of the dataset was slightly lower than that of the single-satellite products. However, a spectrum analysis at the buoy locations indicated that the OIM dataset was capable of resolving diurnal variations in wind speed, which was a result not reproduced by the single-satellite products. In addition, the study also found that the hourly dataset with diurnal variation was effective in obtaining accurate daily mean values by reducing the sampling error. A comparison of daily mean wind speeds derived from satellite observations with those obtained from buoy observations demonstrated that greater accuracy in daily mean SSW data could be achieved using multisatellite observations in comparison with single-satellite observations. Therefore, the application of multisatellite observations that have different observation times could be a useful and effective approach with which to construct datasets with high temporal resolution and to improve the accuracy of daily mean values.

The technique is important for the study of three-dimensional microstructures of materials because it can automatically align (register) a series of parallel sections with both topological information and orientation information at the sub-micrometer scale. Using voxel-based tessellation, a three-dimensional microstructure is reconstructed by registering each section. The application of the method to a cubic material is described and, based on the reconstruction, the grain shape and grain size distribution are characterized.

Abstract Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI or brittle bone disease) is a disorder of connective tissues caused by mutations in the collagen genes. We previously showed that intrauterine transplantation of human blood fetal stem/stromal cells in OI mice (oim) resulted in a significant reduction of bone fracture. This work examines the cellular mechanisms and mechanical bone modifications underlying these therapeutic effects, particularly examining the direct effects of donor collagen expression on bone material properties. In this study, we found an 84% reduction in femoral fractures in transplanted oim mice. Fetal blood stem/stromal cells engrafted in bones, differentiated into mature osteoblasts, expressed osteocalcin, and produced COL1a2 protein, which is absent in oim mice. The presence of normal collagen decreased hydroxyproline content in bones, altered the apatite crystal structure, increased the bone matrix stiffness, and reduced bone brittleness. In conclusion, expression of normal collagen from mature osteoblast of donor origin significantly decreased bone brittleness by improving the mechanical integrity of the bone at the molecular, tissue, and whole bone levels.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the synergistic effects of online multimedia by categorizing it into online broadcast media (OBM) and online interactive media (OIM). Design/methodology/approach The authors used an online experiment method to manipulate the online message stimuli level (online media synergy and online single media repetition). Findings The results revealed that participants exposed to message stimuli of online media synergy reported greater source credibility, cognitive responses (brand credibility and positive thoughts about the brand), attitude toward the brand and purchase intention. In online multimedia, source credibility influences attitude toward the brand through brand credibility and positive thoughts about the brand; in online single media repetition, source credibility influences attitude toward the brand through only brand credibility. Research limitations/implications In addition, the relationship between online media synergy and marketing outcomes might be moderated by consumers’ goals and thought patterns, and future research could further explore the moderating effects of these variables. Practical implications This study contributes to media synergy research, assists marketing planners in their understanding of the importance of online media synergy and serves as a reference for marketing planners considering an integrated online marketing plan. Originality/value The current study investigated how the synergy of OBM and OIM influences message persuasiveness for consumers (cognitive responses, attitude toward the brand and purchase intention).

Automated Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) or Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIM) has proven to be a viable technique for investigating microtexture in polycrystalline materials. It is particularly useful for investigating orientation relationships between phases in multiphase materials. However, when phases do not significantly vary in crystallographic structure, OIM is limited in its capability to reliably differentiate between phases. Through simultaneous collection of EBSD data and chemical data via X-Ray Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) it is possible to dramatically improve upon the phase differentiation capabilities of either technique individually. This presentation will introduce a methodology for combining the two techniques as well as show a few example applications.

The thermo-mechanical response of single crystals has been studied in detail since the discovery of X-ray and electron diffraction. While an extensive knowledge exists on the effect of crystallographic orientation on deformation and recrystallization behavior of single crystals, the thermo-mechanical response of grains of different orientations embedded in a polycrystalline matrix are not well understood. With the emergence of microstructure based models predicting the structure evolution during deformation or recrystallization, data validating the predicted structure changes are essential. This requires to study the evolution of microstructural attributes such as morphology or orientation of an individual grain within a specific grain neighborhood during mechanical or thermal exposure. Interrupted coupon scale testing, with a separation of testing and microstructural observation is not sufficient due to the small size of the objects to be observed. Thus, the structure evolution of selected grains has to be followed in-situ.

High-purity tantalum single crystal cylinders oriented with [011] parallel to the cylinder axis were deformed 10, 20, and 30 percent in compression. The samples took on an ellipsoidal shape during testing, elongated along the [100] direction with almost no dimensional change along [011]. Two orthogonal sectioning planes were selected for characterization using Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIM): one in the plane containing [100] and [011] (longitudinal) and the other in the plane containing [011] and [011] (transverse). OIM revealed patterns of alternating crystal rotations that develop as a function of strain and exhibit evolving length scales. The spacing and magnitude of these alternating misorientations increase in number density and decrease in spacing with increasing strain.

Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIM) is a rapid and spatially specific technique for automatically measuring individual crystallographic orientations in a polycrystalline sample. The technique is based on electron backscatter diffraction in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). While the OIM technique has seen many applications to the investigation of structure/ property relationships in polycrystalline materials, with grain sizes ranging from millimeters to submicron, it is not easily applied to the characterization of microstructures at the nanometer scale due to the inherent resolution limitations of the SEM. Thus, a complementary technique for the transmission electron microscope (TEM) would be advantageous for the study of local orientation in submicron structures such as those that exist in nanocrystalline materials and deformed materials.

O objetivo desse relato é descrever um caso de obstrução intestinal mecânica (OIM) incomum em um cão, causada por pequi (Caryocar brasiliense), que resultou em óbito do paciente, descrevendo os achados nos exames físicos, de auxílio ao diagnóstico e necroscópico. A OIM constitui causa frequente de emergência na medicina veterinária de pequenos animais. Geralmente, é causada por corpos estranhos ingeridos pelo animal. Como metodologia, reportou-se, em um cão de cinco anos, histórico de emagrecimento e anorexia há três dias, além de vômitos frequentes. Os resultados e discussão evidenciaram exame ultrassonográfico abdominal com uma estrutura de formato ovalado, medido cerca de 3,5 cm de comprimento, formadora de forte sombra acústica, com a presença de dilatação segmentar em porção intestinal anterior. O exame radiográfico mostrou segmentos de alças intestinais dilatadas e repletos de gás, com a presença de estrutura radiopaca de formato ovalado, com dimensões de 2,7 x 1,5 cm, na região do Intestino delgado, próximo a bexiga. O exame de necropsia confirmou a localização do corpo estranho na porção proximal do jejuno, já identificada pelos exames de imagem, tratando-se do pequi (Caryocar brasiliense). Foi possível concluir que o caroço de pequi demonstrou ser um considerável agente etiológico da OIM, apesar de não haver outros relatos.

The presence of hcp regions with grains having relatively close orientations has been reported in commercial near alpha titanium billets (IMI 834, Ti 6246, etc). The size of these textured regions (called macrozones) is significantly larger than the average grain size of the microstructure observed after thermomechanical processing. The elongated shape of these large hcp regions suggests that they are eventually related to large prior b grains that pancaked during the ingot break down process. In this contribution, Orientation Image Microscopy was used to study the relationship between the hcp local microtexture heterogeneities and the prior b orientations. Specifically, the orientations of the primary (equiaxed) ap grains and the secondary (lamellar) as colonies produced after the transformation of the b phase were discriminated from OIM maps. Furthermore, from the as inherited OIM map, it was possible to reconstruct the corresponding b OIM map over large regions. The analysis showed that the large hcp macrozones observed in the as received material are not related to corresponding bcc macrozones. However, within an hcp macrozone, various clusters of b grains with similar orientations can be found. In such coherent regions, randomly orientated b grains were also observed, which could be related to microstructural changes during deformation (continuous dynamic recrystallization) as suggested by hot deformation results.

Although adipose-derived stromal cells (ADSCs) have been a major focus as an alternative to autologous bone graft in orthopedic surgery, bone formation potential of ADSCs is not well known and cytokines as osteogenic inducers on ADSCs are being investigated. This study aimed at isolating ADSCs from ovine adipose tissue (AT) and optimizing osteogenic differentiation of ovine ADSCs (oADSC) by culture medium and growth factors. Four AT samples were harvested from two female ovine (Texel/Gotland breed), and oADSCs were isolated and analyzed by flow cytometry for surface markers CD29, CD44, CD31, and CD45. Osteogenic differentiation was made in vitro by seeding oADSCs in osteogenic induction medium (OIM) containing fibroblast growth factor basic (FGFb), bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2), or NEL-like molecule 1 (NELL1) in 4 different dosages (1, 10, 50, and 100 ng/ml, respectively). Basic medium (DMEM) was used as control. Analysis was made after 14 days by Alizarin red staining (ARS) and quantification. This study successfully harvested AT from ovine and verified isolated cells for minimal criteria for adipose stromal cells which suggests a feasible method for isolation of oADSCs. OIM showed significantly higher ARS to basic medium, and FGFb 10 ng/ml revealed significantly higher ARS to OIM alone after 14 days.

Purpose Open innovation (OI) involves the alignment of the organisation’s strategy and resources. Notably, companies will not adopt this emerging paradigm without a guarantee of better results. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to identify which combination of entrepreneurial managerial approaches makes it possible for companies to improve performance. Design/methodology/approach This study involves a survey questionnaire, 147 enterprises and regression analysis on the survey data to identify to what extent strategic and management orientations affect innovation performance (IP), as well as an analysis focusing on the results of two sectors (i.e. tourism and agri-food industries). Findings The main findings show a direct effect amongst the level of innovation, external openness and open innovation management (OIM), and IP. However, although there are no differences in the perception and orientation of OIM and the results across the two sectors, the influence of the variable firm size has been supported. Finally, the collective effort required by companies to ensure the successful implementation of OI processes and achieve high IP is outstanding. Practical implications This paper discusses the significance of these findings, highlighting the main practical implications for researchers and companies – especially the need to assimilate the organisational change involved in the challenge of OI. Originality/value This study combines the sectors industry and services, emphasises OIM and reinforces the literature in the field of IP.

Obturator internus muscle (OIM) abscess occurs rarely in adults. Accurate diagnosis is often hindered and delayed due to the deep location of the abscess and the nonspecific clinical features. Even of rarer occurrence is rupture of the obturator internus muscle abscess into the perirectal space and retroperitoneum causing extensive retroperitoneal necrotizing soft tissue infection. We present a case of ruptured left OIM abscess, which initially presented with clinical features, which were suspected as acute pancreatitis. Contrast-enhanced multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) of the abdomen and pelvis revealed ruptured left OIM abscess with extensive fat stranding, fluid collections, and pockets of gas throughout the perirectal space, perisigmoid space, and bilateral posterior pararenal and anterior pararenal spaces as well as thickening of bilateral anterior renal fascia, posterior renal fascia, and lateral conal fascia. These CT findings were consistent with extensive retroperitoneal necrotizing soft tissue infection secondary to ruptured left obturator internus muscle abscess. Broad-spectrum antibiotics were instituted immediately, and the patient was urgently worked up for drainage of the abscess and debridement of the necrotic material. However, the patient’s condition deteriorated quickly before the surgical interventions were performed and slipped into septic shock. Emergency resuscitative measures were unsuccessful, and unfortunately, the patient died. The case represents a rare pathology with an unusual presentation, which can be fatal if diagnosis and treatment is delayed.

Capital structure is increasingly important in determining the optimal combination of funding for investment needs that can increase firm value from profitability. The study aims to examine the effect of capital structure on profitability of electricity companies in Southeast Asia. The study used multiple regression model represented by pooled least square to calculate 48-panel data from the annual financial report during the time period of 2009-2016. We utilized short-term debt to total assets (STD), long-term debt to total assets (LTD), total debt to total assets (TD), and debt to equity ratio (DER) as proxies of capital structure (independent variables). Operating income margin (OIM), return on asset (ROA), and return on equity (ROE) were the profitability proxies (dependent variables). Firm size and firm age were used as control variables in the study. The results of this study indicate that STD and LTD have a negative relationship that consequently has significant effect on LTD and OIM. Other than positive and negative relationships between the capital structure (TD and DER) and profitability, this study also finds that TD and DER have positive significant influence on OIM and ROE, but have negative insignificant relation with ROA. Thus, it is necessary to optimize the capital structure by adjusting the target of capital structure that can provide a balance on the marginal cost and marginal benefit.

La obstrucción intestinal maligna (OIM) es uno de los problemas más difíciles de manejar por las unidades de cuidados paliativos debido a la elevada carga de síntomas, a menudo recurrentes y, a veces, refractarios entre los pacientes con cáncer avanzado. La falta de estudios contundentes hace que la OIM se maneje empíricamente, existiendo una elevada variabilidad clínica y falta de consenso. Presentamos el caso clínico de un paciente ingresado a cargo de la Unidad de Hospitalización a Domicilio de San Juan de Alicante que presentaba un cuadro de oclusión de intestino delgado debido a implante mesentérico en cuadrante inferior derecho. Se realizó una combinación de agentes propulsores y antisecretivos que actuaron sinérgicamente reduciendo los síntomas gastrointestinales, y presentando una mejoría tanto en la calidad de vida como en el tiempo medio de supervivencia.
