In his seminal Islam Observed: Religious Developments in Morocco and Indonesia from 1968, the American anthropologist Clifford Geertz (1926-2006) placed the comparative study of Muslim societies on the research agenda. In view of my knowledge on the history of Islam in Indonesia, it stroke me that the political dimension of religion did not take an important place in the book. This is the more remarkable because during Geertz’s fieldwork in Java in 1953-4 manifestations of political Islam regularly popped up, and Geertz did not only notice those, but also recorded them in his book The Religion of Java from 1960. In this paper I will go into the question of why Geertz did not give a more prominent place to political Islam in his analysis of Muslim cultures, and what concepts of both Islam and religion he used.

An Observer can act as an instrument of conceptual and semantic analyses. The analysis is not reduced to sensor perception only. Such aspects of perception as mental, evaluative and affective or emotional are not less relevant. In this case an Observer acts an evaluating and perceiving party. The Observer’s functioning is strongly affected by the nature of the observed. The permanent fact is that when we are discussing an Observer there is always something observed. An Observer perceives the subject matter and evaluates the situation as a whole. The observed phenomenon and events are interpreted by the Observer through speech-act verbs such as to hiss, to bleat, to grumble, to babble. The semantic meaning of these predicates contains a perceptive and evaluative component, which in its turn means an Observer present. The last one perceives, interprets and evaluates not just the proposition of the speech act, but the so called paralinguistic component, not less relevant in the communicative process. The article considers an issue on different cognitive and affective states of an Observer – interpreter of a communicative speech act, caused by a specific speech manner of communicants.

In this paper we examine the representations of quantum theory and technology in visual media. Namely, we conduct a thorough content analysis of film scripts in science fiction and fantasy to discover ways quantum physics and computing are portrayed: examples include quantum computer scepticism, quantum as proxy for complexity/intelligence, and quantum theory as a vehicle for mysticism. We proceed with motif analysis in quantum theory and technology illustrations in outlets representative of modern global north economy, news, and science writing. There we extract the dominant symbols of quantum discourse and compare them to quantum technology imaginaries in literature. We recognise the repeated and replicated bias towards quantum technology as fuzzy, nonbinary, subjective, mystical, as well as a venue of a new arms/space race.

Longitudinal communication data are needed to understand the dynamics, adaptation, and evolution of networks over time, particularly when the mode of interaction is face-to-face communication. Traditional means of collecting communication and interaction data that include questionnaires are often not appropriate for collecting this type of dynamic information. To push the field beyond the analysis of discrete snapshots of interactions and speculation about what occurs between those snapshots, an observational data-collection tool called Work Observer was designed by the Army Research Laboratory and is freely available to the research community.

This paper investigates the problem of observer-based robust control for a class of switched stochastic systems with time-varying delay. Based on the average dwell time method, an exponential stability criterion for switched stochastic delay systems is proposed. Then, performance analysis and observer-based robust controller design for the underlying systems are developed. Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Annotation:
Feedback system design is often achieved by neglecting the unmodeled dynamics, such as the actuator and sensor, to reduce design complexity. It is based on an assumption that the unmodeled dynamics are fast enough to be negligible. However, it may cause severe problems for the stability or performance of the overall system, especially, when the controller contains the fast dynamics or uses the high-gain feedback term. A disturbance observer has been widely employed in many industrial applications due to its simple structure and powerful ability to reject disturbances and compensate plant uncertainties. However, since the disturbance observer contains fast dynamics in its structure, the analysis of the effect of the unmodeled dynamics on the disturbance observer-based control is mandatory. This paper reveals the robustness and disturbance rejection performance of the disturbance observer based on the singular perturbation theory and proposes its design guideline for robust stability in the presence of unmodeled dynamics. In addition, this paper presents that the disturbance observer recovers a nominal performance designed for a nominal model of the plant.

An analysis of observation error dynamics and an observer design are presented using the so-called Lyapunov-Schmidt method, firstly in order to analyze the solution's bifurcation of the observation error dynamics, and secondly in order to propose a robust observer with respect to such solution's bifurcation. Two numerical examples based on the Galerkin method show the pertinence of the proposed approach.

We discuss linear multiagent systems consensus problem with distributed reduced-order observer-based protocol under switching topology. We use Jordan decomposition method to prove that the proposed protocols can solve consensus problem under directed fixed topology. By constructing a parameter-dependent common Lyapunov function, we prove that the distributed reduced-order observer-based protocol can also solve the continuous-time multi-agent consensus problem under the undirected switching interconnection topology. Then, we investigate the leader-following consensus problem and propose a reduced-order observer-based protocol for each following agent. By using similar analysis method, we can prove that all following agents can track the leader under a class of directed interaction topologies. Finally, the given simulation example also shows the effectiveness of our obtained result.

Annotation:
Performance in sensory discrimination tasks is commonly quantified using either information theory or ideal observer analysis. These two quantitative frameworks are often assumed to be equivalent. For example, higher mutual information is said to correspond to improved performance of an ideal observer in a stimulus estimation task. To the contrary, drawing on and extending previous results, we show that five information-theoretic quantities (entropy, response-conditional entropy, specific information, equivocation, and mutual information) violate this assumption. More positively, we show how these information measures can be used to calculate upper and lower bounds on ideal observer performance, and vice versa. The results show that the mathematical resources of ideal observer analysis are preferable to information theory for evaluating performance in a stimulus discrimination task. We also discuss the applicability of information theory to questions that ideal observer analysis cannot address.
