This thesis uproots the long-standing assumption that English Catholic nuns living in exile between 1550 and 1800 produced little or no literature, or at least none worth reading. All twenty-four English exilic convents enabled literary production by nuns and their confessors. The Reformation had exposed ideas of female religiosity, ridiculing the contested site of the gendered bodies of nuns. Nevertheless, memories of pre-Reformation religion could not be easily destroyed. Throughout the colonial period of Mexican history, cloistered nuns wrote spiritual journals at the request of their confessors. These documents were read and scrutinized, not only by the confessors, but also by others in the hierarchy of their Orders.
