Annotation:
This chapter reviews the most important sources of non-separability. In models with habit formation the marginal utility provided by today’s consumption depends on past consumption (internal habits) or on the level of aggregate consumption (external habits). The analysis of durable goods is similar in most respects to models with habits. Durable goods put a wedge between expenditure (which takes places in one period) and consumption (over multiple subsequent periods). Non-separability between consumption and leisure posits that the utility from consuming a good might depend on the amount of leisure time one has available. Another important deviation from the model with separable preferences is home production. Models incorporating home production assume that consumers allocate their time among three activities: work, leisure, and home production. Finally, collective models of behavior assume that household members have different preferences with regard to individual consumption, individual leisure time, and public (shared) goods.

This chapter analyses market suppliers’ decisions relating to the pricing, promotion, and creation of capacity to manufacture goods that embody product innovations. The discussion encompasses durable and non-durable products; monopoly and oligopoly; horizontal and vertical differentiation; and original, new-to-market, and new-to-firm products. Firms may have incentives to further innovate after the launch of the original product; this will lead to lower prices and to greater demand and output. This may also imply greater capacity creation (in some location). It is found, however, that the incentives of the originator and those of potential new entrants may differ and will tend to lead to lower prices when there are many suppliers as opposed to when there are fewer. This means that, if there are more innovators, the quantity supplied will be higher; creation of capacity may also be greater, but findings on promotional expenditures are not conclusive.

Annotation:
Insect infestations in grains and other stored food and fibre products cause annual losses worth many millions of dollars worldwide. This illustrated guide enables specialists and non-specialists to distinguish the major pests of durable stored products found throughout the world. It describes how to identify each pest group or species and summarises the latest information on their biology, ecology, geographical distribution, the damage they cause and their economic importance. Hundreds of colour photographs illustrate the identifying features of the most important beetles, moths, psocids, bugs and wasps found in stored products. Essential details on inspection and trapping are included to aid in the early detection of infestations, allowing more time to plan and undertake effective pest control. An extensive bibliography provides a convenient entry point to the specialised literature on these insects. This concise yet comprehensive reference is an essential tool for people responsible for the storage and handling of dried durable products of plant and animal origin worldwide.

This chapter contends that performing one's gender or sexuality is a right worth protecting and defending against sexist and homophobic intolerance. First, it calls attention to the potential confines of the labels brought to bear on non-heteronormative sexualities and genders by even the most liberal societies. Further, the chapter focuses on the tensions raised in balancing activism as it claims rights and struggles against the emergence of a borrowed homophobia implanted locally in a contested state, and the more stable and durable forms of local sexual governance. Ultimately, being open to change develops from varied life experiences that transcend intellectual musings or from perspectives derived from one's immediate vantage point.

Differentiated integration is a durable feature of the European Union and a major alternative for its future development and reform. This book provides a comprehensive conceptual, theoretical and empirical analysis of differentiation in European integration. It explains differentiation in EU treaties and legislation in general and offers specific accounts of differentiation in the recent enlargements of the EU, the Euro crisis, the Brexit negotiations and the integration of non-member states. Differentiated integration is a legal instrument that European governments use regularly to overcome integration deadlock in EU treaty negotiations and legislation. Instrumental differentiation adjusts integration to the heterogeneity of economic preferences and capacities, particularly in the context of enlargement. By contrast, constitutional differentiation accommodates concerns about national self-determination. Whereas instrumental differentiation mainly affects poorer (new) member states, constitutional differentiation offers wealthier and nationally oriented member states opt-outs from the integration of core state powers. The book shows that differentiated integration has facilitated the integration of new policies, new members and even non-members. It has been mainly ‘multi-speed’ and inclusive. Most differentiations end after a few years and do not discriminate against member states permanently. Yet differentiation is less suitable for reforming established policies, managing disintegration, and fostering solidarity, and the path-dependency of core state power integration may lead to permanent divides in the Union.

Moriarty, Michael. Pascal: Reasoning and Belief. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198849117.001.0001.

Annotation:
The book is a study of Pascal’s defence of Christian belief in the Pensées. It aims to expound, and in places to criticize, what it argues (drawing on existing scholarship about the history of the text) is a coherent and original apologetic strategy. It sets out the basic philosophical and theological presuppositions of his project, drawing the distinction between convictions attained by reason and those inspired by God-given faith. It sets out his view of the contradictions within human nature, between the ‘wretchedness’ (our inability to live the life of reason, to attain secure and durable happiness) and the ‘greatness’ (the power of thought, manifested in the very awareness of our wretchedness). His mind–body dualism and his mechanistic conception of non-human animals are discussed. Pascal invokes the biblical story of the Fall and the doctrine of original sin as the only credible explanation of these contradictions. His analysis of human occupations as powered by the twin desire to escape from painful thoughts and to gratify one’s vanity is subjected to critical examination, as is his conception of the self and self-love. Pascal argues that, just as Christianity propounds the only explanation for the human condition, so it offers the only kind of happiness that would satisfy our deepest longings. He thus argues that we have an interest in investigating its truth-claims as rooted in the Bible and in history. The closing chapters discuss his view of Christian morality and the famous ‘wager’ argument for opting in favour of Christian belief.
