L'implication des phénomènes d'oxydation et de glycation est maintenant reconnue dans de nombreuses pathologies. Au cours de ce travail, j'ai procédé à l'identification de voies physiologiques altérées au niveau de cultures cellulaires humaines traitées avec des produits avancés de glycation. J'ai pu démontrer que les albumines d'origine bovine ou humaine présentent une sensibilité différente à la modification par glycoxydation. Ces albumines glycoxydées induisent des altérations de type oxydative au niveau de monocytes humains en culture. Deux protéines ont été identifiées comme étant spécifiquement oxydées au niveau d'adipocytes incubés en présence d'albumine glycoxydée. En présence d'albumine glycoxydée, nous avons observé une modification d'expression de protéines au niveau des cellules SW872. L'albumine glyquée pourrait entraîner des modifications quantitatives et qualitatives de protéines adipocytaires ou monocytaires contribuant à l'aggravation de la pathologie diabétique
Proteins glycoxidation can lead to the formation of Advanced Glycoxidation Endproducts (AGEs), which induce various deleterious effects on cells. I studied the impact of glycoxidation modification on albumin structures and antioxidant properties and identified altered physiological pathways in cell cultures (monocytes and adipocytes) incubated with AGEs. I first reviewed recent insights on albumin antioxidant properties. Secondly, I studied the effect of glucose or methylglyoxal-induced oxidative modifications on bovine serum albumin (BSA) or human serum albumin (HSA) protein structures and on THP1 monocyte physiology. Also, and at the adipocyte level, I proceeded to the identification of specifically carbonylated targets following 2D gels analyses. Finally I identified proteins which expression levels were impaired by AGEs treatment in adipose cells. My work brings new insights about an association of oxidative damage with the progression of diabetes disorders at the monocyte and adipocyte levels

This thesis deals with fundraising of non-profit organisations. The scope of the thesis is to provide the reader with basic information about fundraising, and to apply this information in order to evaluate the fundraising of a selected non-profit organisation. First of all, this work defines the non-profit sector and its long-term sustainability, then the work deals with the fundraising itself. Issues connected with credibility of the organisation and its webpages are included in the part concerning fundraising.These factors establish a competitive advantage in activities that are focused on fundraising. These theoretical foundations are applied on a chosen non-profit organisation, and additionaly, the webpages of the organisation are also analysed, and an ASNO14 non-profit organisation reliability analysis is carried out. The data used in the practical part was collected through an analysis of annual reports of the organisation, webpage analysis and through a personal interview. The ending of this thesis includes an overall evaluation and improvement proposals.

A definição mais imediata para canção de ninar, uma das várias denominações brasileiras para este gênero poético-musical, é estabelecida por sua finalidade: canção feita para adormecer criança pequena; uma definição funcional,portanto. A análise do conteúdo poético e da forma destas canções permite identificar os elementos imprescindíveis à sua composição e eficácia estética, ampliando tal conceito. Desta maneira, a canção de ninar pode ser considerada um dos primeiros objetos culturais a que o ser humano é exposto. O medo da morte (perdas, despedidas, separações), presente nos cuidados maternos, paternos e de outros adultos com as crianças pequenas, especialmente com os recém-nascidos, penetra as canções de ninar em diferentes culturas, expressando-se em vários elementos, inclusive em suas figuras de terror. A esta linha interpretativa, substancializada por constatações advindas de uma prática clínica de atendimento psicológico às famílias de recém-nascidos, foi acrescida outra de caráter mais sociológico: o estudo de alguns textos de canções de ninar tradicionais brasileiras revelou elementos dos encontros e desencontros étnico-culturais dos diferentes povos que formaram a nação brasileira. O traço de terror, geralmente compreendido como medida disciplinar para o sono, aparece acentuado nas nossas canções também porque se origina em um ambiente colonial, escravocrata, contaminado por ameaças e hostilidades. Junto a vestígios de horror apareceram também traços de resistência e preservação cultural das etnias indígenas e negras; como se as canções de ninar fossem veículos propícios ao transporte resguardado de elementos fundamentais da cultura dos grupos humanos colonizados ou escravizados. As pesquisas e reflexões de Mário de Andrade e o estudo de acalantos compostos por artistas brasileiros contemporâneos permitiram conhecer e delinear melhor este gênero: o contexto que o origina, seu tom melancólico, sua forma curta e repetitiva, o uso da sonoridade nasal hum e da vogal u. Por sua qualidade artística, o acalanto pode revigorar o ambiente cultural que cerca o nascimento e a infância. Neste sentido, ele é potencialmente humanizador. O ambiente cultural é tão fundamental e delimitador da experiência humana quanto o ambiente físico e emocional (familiar ou institucional). Cuidar do surgimento das palavras, da sua afinação com a experiência vivida, de seu vigor e sentido; cuidar da experiência inicial com a palavra é condição para o desenvolvimento pleno deste ser de linguagem que é o homem. Assim, redimensiona-se neste estudo o conceito de puericultura que passa a abranger também as ações de cultivo da palavra e da poesia com a criança pequena.
The most immediate definition of lullaby, only one among several Brazilian denominations for this poetic-musical genre, is determined by its main purpose: a song intended for little children to fall asleep, a functional definition, therefore. The analysis of the poetical content and of the form of these songs allows us to identify the essential elements of their aesthetic composition and effectiveness, broadening such concept. Thus, the lullaby may be considered one of the first cultural objects that the human being is exposed to. The fear of death (losses, farewells, separations), present in the cares given by mothers, fathers and other grown-ups to little children, especially newborn babies, permeates the lullabies in different cultures, expressing itself in many elements, including its terror figures. To this interpretative line, based on observations derived from the practice of psychological assistance to the families of newborn babies, another one of a more sociological nature has been added: the study of some texts extracted from traditional Brazilian lullabies has revealed elements of the ethnic-cultural matches and mismatches of the different cultures that shaped the Brazilian nation. The element of terror, generally understood as a disciplinary measure for sleeping, is highlighted in our songs because it also has its origin in a colonial slave-based environment, contaminated by threats and hostilities. Along with the vestiges of horror, there have arisen traces of resistance and cultural preservation of black and indigenous ethnic groups, as if the lullabies had been proper conducive vehicles to the hedged transportation of fundamental elements of the culture of the colonized or enslaved human groups. The researches carried out by Mario de Andrade, as well as his reflections, and the study of lullabies composed by contemporary Brazilian artists allowed the better understanding and outline of this genre: the context where it comes from, its melancholic tone, its short and repetitive form, the use of the nasal sonority \'hum\' and the vowel \'u\'. For its artistic value, the lullaby can be quite refreshing for the cultural environment surrounding birth and childhood. In this sense, it is potentially humanizing.The cultural environment is as important and delimiting for human experience as the physical and emotional environment (familiar or institutional). Caring about the arising of new words, their affinity to the life experience, their vitality and sense; caring about the initial experience with words is a condition for the full development of this language-based being, the man. Hence, in this study, the concept of childcare is resized so as also to include the actions of cultivation of word and poetry with the little child.

Ce mémoire a comme sujet la création du spectacle Berceuse de Samuel Beckett où j`étais d`abord comédienne et après metteur en scène. D`abord, je fais des analyses sur les rapports entre la figure du clown et celle de la tradition du théâtre de l`absurde pour vérifier le potentiel clownesque dans l` oeuvre de Samuel Beckett. Je fais aussi, des expérimentations sur le style du clown: d`abord je me met en scène moi même et ensuite je mets en scène une autre comédienne.J` utilise les techniques budistes du vide et du hasard et aussi l`action physique (Stanislavski) pour les adapter à la pratique artistique en développant différents possibilités de ce style. J`adapte l`analyse active de C. Sanislavski pour étudier le texte de Beckett, en remplaçant l`action physique par la sensation et l`évènement par l`image. Le mot personnage est aussi adapté et est reconnu comme figure. La création Berceuse est un spectacle qui a été construit dans un processus riche en expérimentations. Dans ce mémoire je raconte les chemins et territoires habités par la création artistique dont la proposition d`une rencontre entre Beckett et le style clown a eu des bons résultats. Le résultat a été un tiers , une figure clownesque différente. Une figure que réinvente et se prolonge dans l` abandon et la puissance, dans la faillite et l`échec. Des conditions clownesques en Beckett.
Este memorial reflexivo se refere à prática de direção e atuação vivenciadas na montagem de Canção de Ninar de Samuel Beckett. Traço linhas paralelas e transversais entre a figura do clown e a tradição do absurdo para verificar o potencial clownesco de Beckett. Reflito aqui minhas experimentações clownescas, primeiro me auto dirigindo e depois dirigindo uma atriz. Procedimentos com o vazio, o acaso, a ação física são transformados em uma prática que prioriza as várias facetas do clown. A ação física torna-se sensação e o acontecimento transforma-se em imagem. A personagem escapa por linhas intensivas e aqui é chamada de Figura. Realização da obra homônima de Beckett, Canção de Ninar é um espetáculo resultante de um processo rico em experimentações. Relato, pois, os caminhos e territórios habitados na criação de um clown que com Beckett compõe um bom encontro. Um terceiro, um diferente, uma figura clownesca é criada. Uma figura que se reinventa e se desdobra no desamparo e na potência, na falência e no fracasso. Condição clownesca em Beckett.

Uma canção de ninar é um refrão suave usado para agradar ou acalmar crianças. Esse tipo de canção atua fundamentalmente no processo de desenvolvimento cultural, além de ter um papel preponderante na evolução do homem, juntamente com o surgimento da linguagem humana. Canções de ninar de diferentes etnias exibem parâmetros de estrutura musical comuns e marcantes, como registro agudo, natureza repetitiva e calma, vocal sibilante, andamento lento, contorno melódico suave e mais intervalos descendentes do que outros tipos de canções. Canções folclóricas, por sua vez, apresentam funções diversas e apresentam maior diversidade de parâmetros de estrutura musical quando comparadas à canções de ninar. Hipotetizou-se que canções de ninar, por apresentarem funções bastante distintas de outras canções e por terem relação com o desenvolvimento da espécie humana, afetariam o tempo subjetivo da mesma forma para participantes de diferentes etnias. O contrário é esperado quando participantes estimam o tempo para canções folclóricas. Participaram dessa pesquisa 46 indivíduos, sendo 18 africanos (grupo P-Africano), 17 europeus (grupo P-Europeu) e 11 asiáticos (grupo P-Asiático). Os participantes ouviram 6 estímulos, sendo uma canção de ninar asiática (CN-Asiática), uma canção de ninar africana (CN-Africana), uma canção de ninar europeia (CN-Europeia), uma canção folclórica asiática (CF-Asiática), uma canção folclórica africana (CF-Africana) e uma canção folclórica europeia (CF-Europeia). Os participantes estimaram a duração de cada estímulo através do método de reprodução temporal. Os resultados mostraram que canções de ninar não são percebidas como diferentes de canções folclóricas dentro de cada grupo étnico de participantes, exceto para o grupo P-Africano. As canções de ninar são percebidas igualmente entre os grupos P-Africano, P-Asiático e P-Europeu. As canções folclóricas são percebidas diferentemente dependendo da etnia de origem do participante. As comparações das estimações de tempo realizadas dentro dos grupos étnicos de participantes para canções de ninar entre si, canções folclóricas entre si e canções de ninar com canções folclóricas, mostraram diferenças para cada grupo étnico de participantes. A comparação do tempo estimado com a duração real dos estímulos indicou variações entre os grupos: P-Asiático e P-Africano subestimaram CN-Europeia e CF-Europeia; o grupo P-Europeu superestimou CN-Asiática. Os resultados indicam que canções de ninar atuam igualmente em participantes, independentemente da origem étnica dos mesmos. Esse resultado, juntamente com a discrepância entre os grupos para a percepção das canções folclóricas, confirma a hipótese de que canções de ninar podem atuar universalmente na percepção temporal humana. Além disso, existem influências da etnia de origem dos participantes na percepção individual das canções, exibida pela variação dentro dos grupos P-Asiático, P-Europeu e P-Africano. Isso indica que alguns componentes musicais são universalmente percebidos enquanto outros são afetados pela origem étnica do participante.
A lullaby is a soft chorus used to please or appease children. This type of song primarily operates in the cultural development process, and has a leading role in the evolution of man, together with the emergence of human language. Lullabies from different ethnic groups exhibit common and striking structural features, as shrillness, repetitiveness, squeaky voice, slow tempo, smooth melodic contour and more descendants intervals than other types of songs. Folk songs, in turn, have different functions and are more structurally diverse when compared to lullabies. We hypothesized that lullabies, because of their very distinct functions and their relationship with the development of the human species, would affect subjective time similarly to subjects of different ethnicities. The opposite is expected when subjects estimate the time to folk songs. Participated in this study 46 subjects, 18 African (P-African group), 17 European (P-European group) and 11 Asians (P-Asian group). Participants heard six stimuli, an Asian lullaby (CN-Asian), an African lullaby (CN-African), a European lullaby (CN-European), an Asian folk song (CF-Asian) an African folk song (CF-African) and a European folk song (CF-European). The participants estimated the duration of each stimulus by time reproduction method. The results showed that lullabies are perceived equally as folk songs within each ethnic group of participants, except for the P-African group. The lullabies are also equally perceived by the groups P-African, P-Asian and P-European. The folk songs are perceived differently depending on the participant\'s ethnicity. Comparisons of time estimations showed variations within the ethnic groups of participants to each lullaby, each folk song, and the comparison of lullabies with folk songs. The comparison of the time estimation to the actual duration of the stimuli indicated variations between groups: P-Asian and P-African underestimated CN-European and CF-European; the P-European group overestimated CN-Asian. The results indicate that lullabies affect the participants regardless of their ethnic origin. This result, along with the discrepancy between the groups for the perception of folk songs, confirms the hypothesis that lullabies can act universally in human temporal perception. Moreover, the ethnic origin of the participants influence the perception of each individual song displayed. This indicates that some musical components are universally perceived while others are affected by the ethnic origin of the subject.

Il presente elaborato consiste nella traduzione dalla lingua araba alla lingua italiana di alcuni brani poetici dell'autore siriano Nizar Qabbani. Si tratta in particolare dei testi Aurāq Isbāniya, (Diari spagnoli), Ahzān fi-l-Andalus (Tristezze in Al-Andalus), Gharnāṭa (Granada). I temi principali di queste poesie sono delle suggestioni della Spagna e soprattutto la nostalgia sentita dall'autore, nel suo nazionalismo arabo, per l'antico califfato di Al-Andalus. L'elaborato è diviso in cinque sezioni: 1. Introduzione: spiegazione del tema centrale dei brani tradotti. 2. L'autore. Breve biografia e opera: un'introduzione sulla vita e la produzione artistica di Nizar Qabbani. 3. This paper deals with iron objects found in the 2015 excavation in Birkas Black Earth harbour on the Island of Björkö, in Adelsö parish. The purpose is to through EDTA -conservation and x-rays identify which objects they derived from, and how they can be linked to activities associated with a harbour environment.

Notre approche demande que l'on s'intéresse et analyse les différents schémas de la réitération de l'image féminine chez Nizâr Qabbânî (1923-1998). On a contribué ainsi à l'élaboration d'une stratégie d'interprétation poétique sous l'angle diachronique. Ses poèmes induisent un remodelage à l'égard de la femme. Elle devient un personnage qui domine l'existence. Son image renvoie aussi à la trahison et à l'objet sexuel. Sa poésie décompose et recompose la femme, la situe sur l'échelle des êtres invisibles idéalisés et visibles. Le poète combine les mots du quotidien leur donnant une vitalité et une force accrue. Son attitude vis-à-vis de la femme est vacillante, elle est tantôt bienveillante, tantôt sévère et traditionnaliste. Nizâr Qabbânî dressait le portrait de la femme sous diverses facettes. Os processos composicionais de duas obras musicais são identificados aqui extrinsecamente. Seus elementos estruturais comuns viabilizam um caminho de compreensão e analise, tomando-se como pressupostos formadores de linguagem a parataxe e a intertextualidade. Trata-se, por conseguinte, da designação de uma visão emancipada e expandida dos fundamentos da musica e, ao mesmo tempo, da definição de uma poetica na musica contemporânea brasileira. Objetivos: Valendo-se de sintaxes musicais e linguisticas, o texto visa demonstrar os processos composicionais das duas obras apresentadas e como eles promovem a delineação de uma linguagem, expondo e distinguindo seus elementos estruturais constitutivos, determinantes dos seus caracteres comuns. Método: Baseando-se em referencias teórico-reflexivas, são identificados os elementos estruturais constitutivos das duas obras, apontando os rudimentos que os levam a produzir processos composicionais similares. Confrontadas as obras, são discutidos a analise das suas micro-estruturas e os processos linguisticos parataxe e intertextualidade nas suas formações. Resultados: A possibilidade da formação de uma linguagem musical pela exploração emancipada e expandida de seus elementos básicos, aplicados a um alicerce linguistico, torna-se real na medida em que seus processos composicionais são elaborados dentro de um referencial teórico-reflexivo.
The compositional processes of the two musical works presented here are extrinsically identified. Their common structural elements make a path of understanding and analysis possible through parataxis and intertextuality as presuppositional constructors of a language. Thus, it presumes a designation of an emancipated and evolutional view of Musics capital fundamentals and, at the same time, a definition of a poetics in Brazilian contemporary music.

Les complexes cultuels ruraux d'époque romaine sont nombreux au Liban. Dans une première partie, on aborde le complexe de Hosn-Niha (Beqaa-Liban). Le relevé détaillé du bâti et des objets permet de produire des plans ainsi qu'une description du complexe. Dans une deuxième partie, une analyse des techniques de construction, du décor architectural, des tracés et de la métrologie permet de proposer des hypothèses de restitution des principales constructions. Une troisième partie aborde d'autres complexes environnants. Ils sont décrits et analysés suivant les mêmes paramètres développés à Hosn-Niha. Dans une dernière partie, on propose une hypothèse de restitution des états successifs de Hosn-Niha ainsi qu'une comparaison entre le complexe de Hosn-Niha et les autres complexes suivant les mêmes paramètres. Dans une synthèse, on dégage les spécificités régionales par rapport à ces différents paramètres de façon à éclairer l'histoire de la région entre le 1er et le 4ème siècle de notre ère.

Este trabalho destina-se a estudar como se dá o processo de retextualização do ponto de vista discursivo em canções para crianças. Indagamo-nos sobre o comportamento de canções que são “transpostas” de um público geral para um público específico, no caso, o infantil. Essa questão levou-nos a interrogar de que forma aspectos verbais e contextuais afetam o processo de retextualização e são por ele afetados em canções para crianças que não foram originalmente produzidas para elas. Com foco na concepção de prática discursiva, partimos da hipótese geral de que o arranjo atua como agente retextualizador ao lado de determinados aspectos contextuais (recepção, encarte do CD, DVD, clipes disponibilizados na internet, performance dos artistas nos shows), compondo um conjunto que possibilita retextualizar uma canção, alterando, por vezes, a cenografia e o ethos e tornando-a apta a ser identificada como canção para crianças. Para atingirmos este propósito, lançamos mão dos conceitos de cenografia e ethos, trabalhados por Maingueneau (2001) e dos estudos de Travaglia (2003), Marcuschi (2001) e Costa (2012), que versam sobre o fenômeno da retextualização. Além dos estudos assinalados, também fazemos uso da pesquisa desenvolvida por Coelho (2014) no que concerne ao arranjo da canção e de Sarmento (2004) ao tratarmos da concepção de infância e de suas produções culturais. A seleção do corpus de que nos valemos, 08 canções (versões originais e suas respectivas versões retextualizadas), está condicionada ao fato de terem sido originalmente gravadas em álbuns não destinados para crianças e posteriormente retextualizadas para o público infantil. A análise apontou que quanto mais próxima da cultura lúdica infantil a versão original, menos alterações são observadas em relação aos efeitos de sentido produzidos na canção retextualizada para crianças. Além disso, concluímos que o arranjo e as condições de produção e circulação das canções retextualizadas para crianças mostram-se bastante produtivos enquanto agentes retextualizadores na tarefa de promover a inserção das canções estudadas na prática lúdica infantil.

Le bassin neogene de nijar-carboneras s'organise autour d'un accident senestre majeur : l'accident de carboneras. La cartographie au 1/50 000eme du bassin montre l'existence de deux domaines heteropiques separes par le decrochement. Au nord, l'aire de depot est caracterisee par une sedimentation bassinale s'echellonnant du tortonien au pliocene. Au sud (bloc de gata),le tortonien est caracterise par une intense activite volcanique amorcee au langhien. Les sediments lies a ces volcanites sont peu etendus et presentent des facies de plateforme peu profonde. L'etude structurale montre que ce secteur evolue dans un regime general compressif submeridien induisant localement une extension orthogonale.

Background. In healthcare, bridging the research-to-practice gap is a top priority. In 2008 the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded nine Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC); NHS-university partnerships seeking to accelerate the uptake of research into practice, a process referred to in this thesis as implementation. Evidence suggests that implementation might occur more readily when there is collaboration across various stakeholder and organisational boundaries. Boundary objects are shared things and ideas that are thought to enable communication across boundaries and create an opportunity for stakeholders to work together productively. Despite being studied across a range of settings in which collaboration is key, the role and potential of boundary objects remains understudied in relation to implementation. This thesis fills this gap. Methods. A case study of three CLAHRCs was conducted to explore the role of boundary objects in implementation. Phase 1, a document analysis, identified potential boundary objects (i.e. on paper) across the three cases. In Phase 2, in-depth interviews with people employed in boundary spanning roles in 3 CLAHRCs were conducted to investigate whether and how things and ideas were developed and used as boundary objects during implementation. Findings. Despite high numbers of potential boundary objects identified on paper through the document analysis (defined in this study as boundary objects-in-theory), including care pathways, assessment tools, and disease registers, in practice participants reported that some of these operated to reinforce boundaries. The study showed that there were things and ideas that were shared between stakeholders and enable them to collaborate to varying degrees (defined as boundary objects-in-use), including shared ideas around implementation, clinical topics, and some tools and guidelines. However some of these were perceived as prescriptive and imposed, requiring extensive adaptation to become meaningful to stakeholders. A process of creation and/or adaptation sometimes came about through unanticipated rather than planned processes. The most effective boundary objects-in-use were those which were co-produced in partnership with stakeholders. These were generated through discussions during which boundaries were clarified and solutions were sought to meet stakeholders’ needs, a process of collective endeavour identified as a type of bricolage. Boundary objects-in-use developed through bricolage possessed properties which were found to be lacking from those things that failed to make the transition from boundary objects-in-theory. Successful boundary objects-in-use were symbolically meaningful, resonant, and perceived as authentic by stakeholders. Discussion. An understanding of boundary objects defined by action-based properties rather than structural features is proposed, updating the classic typology. The study showed that for boundary objects-in-theory to make the transition to boundary objects-in-use, all relevant stakeholders must be engaged throughout the development process. Individuals working in implementation, such as boundary spanners, were more likely to deploy boundary objects effectively by using the skills of the bricoleur, initiating the collective creation and use of such objects. Implications. The findings from this study suggest that accepting and encouraging adaptation of those things that could in theory be boundary objects through a process of collective bricolage, instigated by credible boundary spanners, encourages the co-production of useful boundary-objects-in-use. These can represent an effective mechanism to enhance the appeal and relevance of outputs of research by providing a catalyst to align, engage, and accommodate multiple stakeholder perspectives.

The study documents the rise of emerging Sri Lankan feminine subjectivities as portrayed in post-independence novels in English by Punyakante Wijenaike, Nihal de Silva, and Chandani Lokuge. It attempts to interpret the rise of socially constructed traits of new womanhood and shifting gender norms responding to significant transformations in post-independence Sri Lanka economy and society during which the nation has rapidly shifted from a traditional rural economy to an industrialized since the 1978 free market reforms embraced with policies of globalization and neoliberalism. The selected novels are historicized by means of specific data indicating that any compensations traditionally afforded to Sri Lankan women through the collusion of colonialism with patriarchy are being challenged by the current globalization of opportunity and risk, even as Sri Lankan women continue to engage in the far older struggles for respect in traditional contexts and spaces (Wijenaike), take up arms in service in the name of nation-building projects (De Silva), or search for greater life opportunities by means of out- migration and eventual return (Lokuge). Challenges to conventional colonial-patriarchal ideology, with attention to specific objects symbolizing alternative (or even "deviant") femininity long preceding modernity, are the central focus of Punyakante Wijenaike's Giraya and Amulet. The use of a Marxist-feminist approach, localized in the setting of the walauwe, allows for the examination of potentials and limits for women's subjectivities as they emerged in the earliest 1970s-era post-independence novels. Nihal de Silva's The Road from Elephant Pass explores the fictionalized portrayal of women soldiers, conscripted to the LTTE in the early 1980s, and the effects of a revolutionary posture upon traditional gender roles. The tension in de Silva's novel between the political liberation project as national/romantic allegory uniting Sinhala and Tamil causes as ultimately endorsing patriarchal claims of Anderson's "imagined communities" thesis in the dramatic context of women's participation in the civil war. Using a "Fourth World" sovereignty frame, the final chapter of the project analyzes the potential rewards and risks of diasporic experience, for women protagonists in Chandani Lokuge's If the Moon Smiled and Turtle Nest. Collectively, the analyses indicate how Sri Lankan novels in English have documented the struggles, potentials, and continuing vulnerabilities around the emergence of new feminine subjectivities for post-independence Sri Lankan women.
