We investigated the development of children’s self-reported positive (Companionship and Recreation, Validation and Caring, Help and Guidance, Intimate Disclosure, and Conflict Resolution) and negative (Conflict and Betrayal) friendship quality from the third to sixth grades using The National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD) Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development data (NICHD SECCYD; n = 1,364; M age = 9.03 years; 51.70% boys at recruitment). Consistent with expectations, growth models suggested that children reported higher positive, and lower negative, friendship quality with age. Boys had significantly lower positive friendship quality at third grade and slower increases than girls. Boys had slower decreases in negative friendship quality than girls. It is possible that different social orientations explain sex differences in friendship quality trajectories. Further research is needed to explore other factors that might account for individual differences in friendship quality trajectories.

The self-damaging behaviors central to borderline personality disorder (BPD) become prominent in adolescence. Current developmental theories cite both early family processes and childhood dysregulation as contributors to BPD, but longitudinal data from infancy are rare. Using the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development database (SECCYD; N = 1,364), we examined path models to evaluate parent and child contributors from infancy/preschool, middle childhood, and adolescence to adolescent BPD-related features. In addition, person-centered latent class analyses (LCA) investigated whether adolescent BPD-related features were more strongly predicted by particular patterns of maladaptive parenting. Path modeling identified unique influences of maternal insensitivity and maternal depression on BPD-related features, first, through social-emotional dysregulation in middle childhood, and second, through continuity from infancy in maternal insensitivity and depression. LCA results indicated that early withdrawn parenting was particularly predictive of BPD-related features in adolescence. Results suggest multiple points of intervention to alter pathways toward adolescent borderline psychopathology.

This study uses canonical correlation analyses to explore the relationship between multiple predictors of school readiness (i.e., academic readiness, social readiness, and teacher-child relationship) and multiple temperamental traits using data from the second wave (age 54 months, n = 1226) of the longitudinal Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD; NICHD ECCRN 1993). This longitudinal study collected data on a large cohort of children and their families from birth through age 15. For academic readiness, only one temperamental constellation emerged, representing the construct of effortful control (i.e., high attentional focusing, high inhibitory control). For peer interactions, two significant constellations emerged: “dysregulated” (low inhibitory control, low shyness, and high activity), and “withdrawn” (high shyness, low inhibitory control, low attentional focusing). Finally, the analyses exploring child-teacher relationships revealed two significant constellations: “highly surgent” (high activity, low inhibitory control, low shyness) and “emotionally controlled” (low anger/frustration and high inhibitory control). Results of this study form a more nuanced exploration of relationships between temperamental traits and indicators of school readiness than can be found in the extant literature, and will provide the groundwork for future research to test specific hypotheses related to the effect temperamental constellations have on children’s school readiness.

There exists a general understanding that physical education (PE) is a means to create a physically healthy population. However, disagreements arise over primary practices within PE to achieve this end. The primary divergence is whether PE facilitators should primarily ensure participants exert a specific level of energy during class or develop their confidence, competence, knowledge, and motivation for meaningful physical activity (PA) participation outside of the PE classroom (referred to as physical literacy (PL)). This study uses structural equation modeling to examine associations between enjoyment of PA and minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in PE class in grade 5 (mean age = 10) and participation in PA and feelings about PA 1 year later, in grade 6 (mean age = 11), in the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD, N = 1364). Enjoyment of PA in grade 5 predicted sport self-concept (β = 0.347, p ≤ 0.001), MVPA (β = 0.12, p ≤ 0.001), and enjoyment of PA (β = 0.538, p ≤ 0.001) in grade 6. These associations remained when including weekday MVPA performed in grade 5 as an indirect effect (β = 0.058, p ≤ 0.001). MVPA performed during PE in grade 5 was not associated with any PA outcomes in grade 6. Findings suggest PE instructors should prioritize PL development over maintenance of high energy expenditure during PE class for long-term MVPA.

A large body of research has examined if early psychopathology symptoms predict continued social difficulties into adolescence; however, few studies have examined whether early social competence predict which children will develop and maintain psychopathology symptoms across childhood and adolescence. Utilizing the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development dataset, this study included a multi-method assessment of social competence in preschoolers and examined whether these social competency measures predicted internalizing and externalizing psychopathology symptom trajectories throughout childhood and adolescence. Additionally, it examined whether social competency measures predicted narrowband measures of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, depression, and psychopathy in 3rd - 9th grade. Exploratory factory analyses could not identify underlying factors among the social competency measures; as such, these were examined individually. Two to four classes were identified using Growth Mixture Modeling for parent- and teacher-reported internalizing and externalizing trajectories. Generally, children who had worse preschool social competence were more likely to be in the various moderate and high psychopathology symptom trajectory classes. Some measures of social competency were predictive of parent and teacher-reported ADHD and ODD and self-reported psychopathy, with differing relations for males and females; no measures were predictive of self-reported depression. This study has important implications with regard to early identification of and intervention for at-risk youth. Identifying these youth during the preschool years can result in improved developmental trajectories and significantly decreased societal costs.

A large amount of research has looked to see if early atypical mental or behavioral symptoms (known as psychopathology symptoms) predict continued social difficulties into adolescence; however, only a few studies have looked at whether early social skills and performance (social competence) predict which children will develop and continue to show psychopathology symptoms across childhood and adolescence. Using the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development dataset, this study included multiple ways to assess social competence in preschoolers and wanted to see if these measures predicted psychopathology symptoms over time as the child grows up. Additionally, it looked to see whether social competency measures predicted symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, depression, and psychopathy in 3rd - 9th grade. Generally, after running analyses on the data, children who had worse preschool social competence were more likely to have moderate and high psychopathology symptoms over time. Some measures of social competency were shown to be related to parent and teacher-reported ADHD and ODD and self-reported psychopathy, with different connections for males and females; no measures were connected to self-reported depression. This study has important possibilities when looking at early recognition of and treatment for at-risk youth. Finding these youth during the preschool years can lead to better paths over time.

The goal of this study was to explore the relationship between stress and executive function (EF) in adolescence and to determine the extent to which the adolescent-caregiver attachment moderated the effects of stress on EF. EF are a set of meta-cognitive processes, including planning, that require coordinated neural activation in the prefrontal cortex and a number of other brain regions. Deficits in EF are associated with many mental health disorders. Large-scale, federally funded efforts are ongoing to understand more about EF and the brain.

Current adolescent brain research calls for further investigation of how regions coordinate in task-specific activities (Spear, 2010). The stress, or hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA), and attachment systems share underlying neural substrates that overlap with regions activated to perform EF. Adolescence is a sensitive period for changes in EF skills (Blakemore & Choudhury, 2006), the HPA axis (Romeo, 2011), and attachment (Allen, 2008). Therefore, this research was aimed at exploring how stress and attachment predict performance on an EF task in adolescence. Specifically, the researcher examined the extent to which attachment styles moderated the relationship between cortisol, a measure of HPA axis functioning, and performance on the Tower of London (TOL), a test of planning skills. The NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD) data were used to examine this overarching research question in a social neuroscience model.

While the TOL is one of the most frequently used measures of EF, its scoring methods vary across studies (Etnier & Change, 2009). Study 1 consisted of an exploratory factor analysis with data from 932 youth, and results supported a single factor model that best represented planning skills, which was consistent with the hypothesized structure based on an exploratory study with a small sample of college students (Berg, Byrd, McNamara, & Case, 2010). The factor score was then used as the criterion variable in Study 2, which included three moderated regression models that explored secure, preoccupied, and dismissing attachment styles. Though results suggested that cortisol and attachment were not predictive of planning in this sample, potential explanations for the lack of findings are proposed and recommendations for future research are included.

Large-scale assessment studies have repeatedly documented performance disadvantages of language minority students in German elementary schools. The substantial achievement gap has led to concerns regarding the validity of large-scale assessment items for language minority students. It may be the case that these performance differences are, in part, due to high language demands of the test items. These items may selectively disadvantage language minority students in the testing situation. This dissertation project investigated the connection between the academic language demands of mathematics test items and the test performance of monolingual students and language minority students. First, it was investigated whether the test items were differentially valid for language minority students. Moreover, the connection between the differential validity and the linguistic complexity of the test items was tested. The findings indicated that overall, differential validity of the examined tests for language minority students was low. However, the test items’ language demands were related to differential validity. The largest proportion of item-specific performance disadvantages was explained by confounded combinations of several linguistic features. Additionally, unique effects of descriptive, lexical, and grammatical features were identified. An experimental study showed that linguistic simplification did not seem to be a promising method to substantially reduce the performance differences between language minority students and German monolingual students. A comparison of differential effects of mathematics items’ language demands for language minority students over two adjacent grade levels indicated that the impact of academic language demands seemed to depend on grade level rather than on language minority student status. Regardless of their home language, younger students seemed to struggle more with linguistically complex test items than older students.

The present dissertation examines whether academic language demands are disproportionally more difficult for elementary school children with non-German home languages than for children who are monolingually German-speaking. Furthermore, it addresses the question of whether the comprehension of academic language is more relevant for school achievement than the comprehension of everyday language. Study 1 is based on an experimental design, including listening comprehension texts that differed in their academic language complexity. When answering the listening comprehension tasks, children with a non-German home language performed more poorly than children with German home language, regardless of the linguistic complexity of the texts. However, differential effects of academic language on listening comprehension of students with a non-German home language did not emerge. Study 4 yielded comparable results based on a reading comprehension test. Studies 2 and 3 investigated whether academic language features of test items in mathematics and reading comprehension are associated with DIF (differential item functioning) against school children who are not monolingually German-speaking and German monolingual students from families with low socioeconomic status (SES), respectively. There were substantial relationships between various academic language features and DIF. These relationships were more numerous and more pronounced for children who were not monolingually German-speaking than for German monolingual students from low SES families. Study 4 showed that the comprehension of academic language was more highly correlated with school achievement, operationalized with students’ mathematical achievement, than the comprehension of everyday language. After a joint discussion of the four studies’ results, implications for educational practice are drawn and perspectives for future research on the concept of academic language are presented.

Do voters who feel close to mainstream parties shift to niche parties in European Parliament elections when they perceive the latter to be the most competent? And to what extent do mainstream-voters switch to niche parties to signal the importance of niche issues, such as the environment and immigration? Using data from the 2019 European Election Study (EES) Voter Study, the present research aims at answering the aforementioned questions. The results demonstrate that perceiving a mismatch between a mainstream party one feel close to and a niche party one considers to be the best at handling the most important issue leads mainstream-voters to shift to niche parties in the European stage. Additionally, many electors switch to niche parties in European Parliament elections to signal the importance of niche issues - particularly, the environment and immigration - to mainstream parties.

This chapter examines the origins of asymmetry in the American public sphere by charting the rise of second-wave right-wing media. Taking a political economy approach, this chapter investigates how institutions, politics, culture, and technology combine to explain why Rush Limbaugh, televangelism, and Fox News were able to emerge as mass media when they did, rather than remaining, as first-generation right-wing media after World War II had, small niche players. The chapter also considers how the emergence of the online right-wing media ecosystem followed the offline media ecosystem architecture because of the propaganda feedback loop. It shows that asymmetric polarization precedes the emergence of the internet and that even today the internet is highly unlikely to be the main cause of polarization, by comparison to Fox News and talk radio.

Annotation:
The arterial pole of the heart is a hotspot for life-threatening forms of congenital heart defects (CHDs). It is formed by progressive addition of myocardium from epithelial progenitor cells in the second heart field (SHF). SHF cells contribute successively to the right ventricle and proximal and distal outflow tract myocardial walls which, after neural crest influx and cardiac septation, give rise to myocardium at the base of the aorta and pulmonary trunk. SHF cells are characterized by continued proliferation and differentiation delay controlled by an array of transcriptional regulators and signalling pathways which define the SHF progenitor cell niche in pharyngeal mesoderm. Failure of normal SHF deployment leads to a shortened outflow tract and failure of ventriculo-arterial alignment, resulting in a spectrum of conotruncal CHD. We discuss the origins of the SHF in cardiopharyngeal mesoderm and focus on the mechanisms driving SHF deployment, summarizing current understanding of critical signalling pathways and transcription factors.

AbstractThis chapter presents the final proposal of the RM maturity model and proposes a robust framework for the upper RM mid-range theory. The first section synthesizes and explains the mutual connections of distinct RM activities and approaches of an RM-mature firm. A quick test for RM maturity is proposed. The second section introduces the notion of an RM niche, which is needed to explain why moderate proficiency in RM yields no significant advantages and why the relationship between what a company does in terms of RM and achieving a sustainable competitive advantage is highly curvilinear. The universal factors that determine the size of an RM niche and thus the size and scope of RM-mature firms are proposed and discussed. The third section provides eight examples of companies illustrating different facets of RM ‘in motion’ and serves as supplementary qualitative material to study the diverse challenges in managing relationships.

AbstractThis text explores different language ideologies and different ideologies of childhood and socialization among Romani parents and local teachers of Romani children. It also makes some notes on different modes of learning that the children can come across both inside and outside the school environment. All these features can be linked with the child-structured pretend play with school instruction as the main topic, as I observed it during my stays in one segregated Romani settlement in Eastern Slovakia. Among other functions, this play creates a natural niche of using Slovak, a language of instruction and the second language of children in Gav, which is not used in home environment of the children. I will show that, despite the teachers seeing the Romani settlement as a non-stimulating environment, the children learn many things in many different patterns. Nevertheless, the text presents the settlement and the school not as two different worlds, but as places naturally linked together through child agency.

This chapter addresses how Finnish films were exported and travelled to the United States and Canada between 1938-1941. Although resources were scarce and Finnish films were mainly targeted to domestic audiences, there existed vibrant niche markets for Finnish films among Finnish immigrants, in particularly during the late 1930s and the early 1940s. The chapter explores the distribution and exhibition practices within these diasporic communities, and discusses the significance of the North American niche markets both for the Finnish film industry and for Finnish immigrants. After this promising start was ruptured by the Second World War, the postwar circulation of Finnish films had only a marginal economic influence. Yet Finnish films of this era offered important means for the Finnish diasporic colonies and communities to sustain and negotiate national identities.

Both the haunting memories of our earliest ancestors recorded on ancient cave paintings around the world and close ethnographic studies of human relationships with specific animals, reveal that humans have never been alone. This history is one of cooperation as well as of violence, and while the shadow side of that history should not be either under- or overplayed, a detailed discussion on this is deferred to the second volume. Humans are sometimes known as the hyper-cooperative species, but how might those cooperative tendencies play out in relation to other animals? Using work by anthropologists who have begun to analyse the lives of other animals using anthropological tools through ethno-primatology and ethno-hyenaology, and ethno-elephantology, the case is made for common occurrence of human/other animal entanglements. The theoretical resources for this work stem from an evolutionary approach called the extended evolutionary synthesis or niche construction theory. The philosophical basis for this work draws on biosocial anthropological theories developed by Tim Ingold. It is also useful to distinguish between ‘hidden’ multispecies associations in the microbiome and that which is played out through gradually more explicit responses between different species. All form closely interlaced relationships that contribute to the niche in which these relationships are embedded.

The Kru communities of Freetown and Liverpool emerged in response to, and as a consequence of, British maritime interests. Kru were actively encouraged to leave their Liberian homeland and migrate to Freetown, where they came to constitute an important part of its maritime trade. The Kru formed a significant nucleus of Freetown’s seafarers, as well as the majority of ships’ labourers or ‘Krooboys’ that were recruited to work the West African coast. The occupational niche that the Kru eventually came to occupy in Britain’s colonial trade with West Africa had important social repercussions. The Kru were labelled as unusually competent maritime workers by shipowners and colonial administrators, and the Kru encouraged this label for obvious expedient reasons. The gradual build-up of the Kru’s dominance in shipping during the nineteenth century and until the Second World War contrasts sharply with their position in the post-war period. The breaking down of their occupational niche due to circumstances beyond their control had direct social consequences on the nature of their community. Whilst many Kru clubs and societies depended on seafaring for their very existence, the demise of shipping undermined such societies’ ability to survive in the face of increasing unemployment and poverty....

Piezoelectric ultrasonic motors (PUMs) fill a unique niche in mechatronic actuators. The motors are lightweight, simple, and reliable, containing a single moving part that provides the function of motor, transmission, and brake. They are ideal for a variety of robotic applications as well as commercial and medical applications. In order to exploit PUMs fully, computationally efficient models of dynamic response, capturing all important dynamics, are needed. This paper describes the experimental characterization of the dynamic response of a typical commercial PUM (Shinsei USR-30) using an inertial load and evaluation of three classes of dynamic models: second-order predictive (physics-based) models, algebraic (curve fitting) descriptive models, and neural network approximation.

Three different optimization methods using genetic algorithms have been developed, aiming to achieve better aggressive intermediate turbine duct (ITD) performance. To overcome defects of simple genetic algorithms, a niche genetic algorithm is used, for its better adaptability to multi-peak function. These three methods are two-dimensional optimization for pursuing the highest static pressure coefficient; two-dimensional optimization via controlling static pressure coefficient; and a further three-dimensional optimization. The second method introduces a restrainer to make sure the maximum value of static pressure coefficient gradient less than a limitation. A simulation case, an ITD with eight struts, was implemented to demonstrate the capabilities of the presented optimization methods. Compared to the baseline ITD, the results show as follow. The first method obtains a best static pressure coefficient but a severe separation. The second optimization method with static pressure coefficient gradient control can definitely suppress separation in the ITD, the second method also obtains better static pressure coefficient and the lowest total pressure loss coefficient. The third method, a further three-dimensional optimization can obtain better ITD overall performance because of a more realistic simulation. Nevertheless, the second two-dimensional optimization method can get good enough results while it is apparently much more time-saving compared to three-dimensional one, which make it more suitable for engineering applications.

Oil industry increasingly demands accurate and stable continuous measurement of the percent water in crude oil production streams (watercut) over the entire 0 to 100% range. High accuracy and stability are also required for surface measurement to support niche applications such as control of processes which remove trace amounts of oil and particulates from produced water prior to disposal. Differential Dielectric Sensors (DDS) have been developed by Chevron as independent tools connected with multiphase meters for process management and composition measurement. This paper is a two-part paper — the first part (current paper) deals with analytical modeling of the DDS (configured in a single ended mode) and the second part discusses the results of key experimental investigations obtained in a differential mode. The main objective of this paper is to develop appropriate mathematical models for the DDS which characterize the microwave attenuation and phase shift as a function of fluid properties, sensor geometry and operational conditions. Forward models based on the analysis of microwave propagation have been developed for sensors configured as circular waveguides. Results of this project will be useful for optimization and refinement of multiphase meters.

Lead-free solders have garnered much attention in recent years due to legislation banning the use of lead in electronics. As use of lead solders is phased out, there is a need for lead-free alternatives for niche applications such as high temperature environments where traditionally high lead solders are used. Electronics and sensors exposed to high-temperature environments such as those associated with deep well drilling require solder interconnects that can withstand high thermal-mechanical stresses. In an effort to characterize solder alloys for such applications, this study focuses on deformation behavior of the Sn95-Sb5 solder under high-temperature exposures (from 298°K to 473°K). As compared to conventional high-temperature Pb-based solder 90Pb–10Sn, Sn95–Sb5 exhibited very high tensile strength and modulus, as well as superior creep properties despite its lower melting temperature. Importantly, high-temperature deformation was shown to be influenced by the presence of the second phase (SnSb) distributed within the Sn-rich matrix. These second phase precipitates appeared to be dissolved into the Sn-rich phase above 453°K, which converted the solder into a single-phase alloy and resulted in a change in its deformation mechanism. Furthermore, as the service temperature is of such high homologous temperature (T > 0.5Tm), creep deformation will contribute significantly toward the life of the solder joint during thermal cycling. In order to characterize the creep behavior and to identify controlling mechanism(s), creep tests were carried out, from which the stress exponent and activation energy were determined. In this study, detailed microstructures under high-temperature are presented in conjunction with the corresponding mechanical behavior to further understand the controlling deformation mechanisms.

South Africa is a country with significant socio-economic development challenges, with the majority of South Africans having limited or non-existent access to basic infrastructure, services, housing and socio-economic opportunities etc. The urban housing backlog currently exceeds 2.4 million houses, with many families living in informal settlements. The Breaking New Grounds Policy, 2014 for the creation of sustainable human settlements, acknowledges the challenges facing human settlements, such as, decreasing human settlements grants allocation, increasing housing backlog, mushrooming of informal settlements and urbanisation. The White Paper on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), 2019 notes that South Africa has not yet fully benefited from the potential of STI in addressing the socio-economic challenges and seeks to support the circular economy principles which entail a systematic change of moving to a zero or low waste resource-efficient society. Further to this, the Science and Technology Roadmap’s intention is to unlock the potential of South Africa’s human settlements for a decent standard of living through the smart uptake of science, technology and innovation. One such novel technology is the Three-Dimensional (3D) printing technology, which has produced numerous incredible structures around the world. 3D printing is a computer-controlled industrial manufacturing process which encompasses additive means of production to create 3D shapes. The effects of such a technology have a potential to change the world we live in and could subsequently pave the roadmap to improve on housing delivery and reduce the negative effects of conventional construction methods on the environment. To this end, the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), in partnership with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) hosted the second virtual IID seminar titled: Exploring the Prospects of Using 3D Printing Technology in the South African Human Settlements, on 01 March 2021 to explore the potential use of 3D printing technology in human settlements. The webinar presented preliminary findings from a study conducted by UJ, addressing the following topics: 1. The viability of 3D printing technology 2. Cost comparison of 3D printed house to conventional construction 3. Preliminary perceptions on 3D printing of houses Speakers included: Dr Jennifer Mirembe (NDoHS), Dr Jeffrey Mahachi, Mr Refilwe Lediga, Mr Khululekani Ntakana and Dr Luxien Ariyan, all from UJ. There was a unanimous consensus that collaborative efforts from all stakeholders are key to take advantage of this niche technology. @ASSAf_Official; @dsigovza; @go2uj; @The_DHS; #SA 3D_Printing; #3D Print_Housing; #IID
