In the mid-1960s, Marshall McLuhan prophesied that electronic media were creating an increasingly interconnected global village. Such pronouncements popularized the idea that the era of machine-age technology was drawing to a close, ushering in a new era of information technology. This shift finds parallels in a wave of major art performances and exhibitions between 1966-1970, including nine evenings: theatre and engineering at the New York Armory, spearheaded by Robert Rauschenberg, Billy Klüver, and Robert Whitman in 1966; The Machine: As Seen at the End of the Mechanical Age, curated by Pontus Hultén at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA) in 1968; Cybernetic Serendipity, curated by Jasia Reichardt at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London in 1968; and Software, Information Technology: Its New Meaning for Art, curated by Jack Burnham at the Jewish Museum in New York.

Rapidly advancing health technology poses problems for managers. Although clear conceptual frameworks exist for economic evaluation, in practice severe problems remain in carrying out timely research that is locally appropriate to the needs of managers. This paper explores some of these problems in the context of the policy analysis interface between economic research and the management of technology. In the light of experience gained from recent evaluation research it indicates how researchers and managers can each contribute to the provision of a stronger empirical basis for policy making and policy management. An earlier version of this paper was presented at the joint meeting of the Health Economists Study Group and Institute of Health Service Management, University of York, 6–8 July 1987. AbstractA multilinear regression (MLR) approach is developed to predict 3-hourly storm surge during the cool-season months (1 October–31 March 31) between 1979 and 2012 using two different atmospheric reanalysis datasets and water-level observations at three stations along the New York–New Jersey coast (Atlantic City, New Jersey; the Battery in New York City; and Montauk Point, New York). The predictors of the MLR are specified to represent prolonged surface wind stress and a surface sea level pressure minimum for a boxed region near each station. The regression underpredicts relatively large (≥95th percentile) storm maximum surge heights by 6.0%–38.0%. A bias-correction technique reduces the average mean absolute error by 10%–15% at the various stations for storm maximum surge predictions. Using the same forecast surface winds and pressures from the North American Mesoscale (NAM) model between October and March 2010–14, raw and bias-corrected surge predictions at the Battery are compared with raw output from a numerical hydrodynamic model’s [the Stevens Institute of Technology New York Harbor Observing and Prediction System (SIT-NYHOPS)] predictions. The accuracy of surge predictions between the SIT-NYHOPS output and bias-corrected MLR model at the Battery are similar for predictions that meet or exceed the 95th percentile of storm maximum surge heights.

Depth estimation represents a prevalent research focus within the realm of computer vision. Existing depth estimation methodologies utilizing LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology typically obtain sparse depth data and are associated with elevated hardware expenses. Multi-view image-matching techniques necessitate prior knowledge of camera intrinsic parameters and frequently encounter challenges such as depth inconsistency, loss of details, and the blurring of edges. To tackle these challenges, the present study introduces a monocular depth estimation approach based on an end-to-end convolutional neural network. Specifically, a DNET backbone has been developed, incorporating dilated convolution and feature fusion mechanisms within the network architecture. By integrating semantic information from various receptive fields and levels, the model’s capacity for feature extraction is augmented, thereby enhancing its sensitivity to nuanced depth variations within the image. Furthermore, we introduce a loss function optimization algorithm specifically designed to address class imbalance, thereby enhancing the overall predictive accuracy of the model. Training and validation conducted on the NYU Depth-v2 (New York University Depth Dataset Version 2) and KITTI (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and Toyota Technological Institute) datasets demonstrate that our approach outperforms other algorithms in terms of various evaluation metrics.

AbstractThe Stevens Institute of Technology Estuarine and Coastal Ocean Model (sECOM) is coupled here with the Mellor–Donelan–Oey (MDO) wave model to simulate coastal flooding due to storm tides and waves. sECOM is the three-dimensional (3D) circulation model used in the New York Harbor Observing and Prediction System (NYHOPS). The MDO wave model is a computationally cost-effective spectral wave model suitable for coupling with 3D circulation models. The coupled sECOM–MDO model takes into account wave–current interactions through wave-enhanced water surface roughness and wind stress, wave–current bottom stress, and depth-dependent wave radiation stress. The model results are compared with existing laboratory measurements and the field data collected in New York–New Jersey (NY–NJ) harbor during Hurricane Sandy. Comparisons between the model results and laboratory measurements demonstrate the capabilities of the model to accurately simulate wave characteristics, wave-induced water elevation, and undertow current. The model results for Hurricane Sandy reveal the successful performance of sECOM–MDO in situations where high waves and storm tides coexist. The results indicate that the temporal maximum wave setup in NY–NJ harbor was 0.26 m. On the other hand, the contribution of wave setup to the peak storm tide was 0.13 m, a contribution of only 3.8%. It is found that the inclusion of wave radiation stress and wave-enhanced bottom friction in the circulation model can reduce the errors in the calculated storm tides. At the Battery (New York), for example, the root-mean-square error reduced from 0.17 to 0.12 m.

The Cary Graphic Arts Collection in Rochester, New York, manages the Graphic Design Archive of the Rochester Institute of Technology which features more than 35 collections documenting the work of many 20th-century Modernist graphic designers. Among these is the work of Elaine Lustig Cohen (1927–2016), a relatively unknown designer from New York City. Upon her marriage to the well-known designer Alvin Lustig, Elaine unknowingly started out on her path as a designer. She seamlessly transitioned from office manager to artist, but it took decades for her to receive recognition for her work. In an attempt to situate Elaine Lustig Cohen and her body of work within graphic design history and to give her body of work greater attention, I researched, handled, and disseminated knowledge of her work and her collection. Specifically, I examined and organized her collection at the Cary Graphic Arts Collection and went on to co-curate an exhibition chronicling her career as part of my capstone of my undergraduate degree in museum studies. I wanted to look at this collection in relation to the bigger picture of women in design and to the relationship between the representation of women in the history of graphic design textbooks and the availability of their work in archives.

As is known to all, teacher education is a field of scientific inquiry where future teachers receive systematic training in “worthwhile pedagogic practices” so that “they are more likely to emulate them in their role as teachers” (Morris, foreword). To make this happen, teachers in teacher education should experiment with innovative ways to improve their own practices aimed at addressing important issues in the teaching of different subject domains, such as assessment, curriculum, and learner autonomy in the era of modern technology. But whether innovation means effectiveness is an empirical issue. The book edited by Ming-Fai Hui and David L. Grossman (2008), Improving Teacher Education through Action Research, is a collection of action research reports on a series of projects conducted in Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) aiming to find more effective ways of teaching in the new era.

The main theme exposed in this article is articulated on the centrality that the new media have assumed in the academic research of contemporary art theory. The case studies analyzed derive from a direct knowledge of the experiments conducted at the Comparative Media Studies, the Media Lab and the Program in Art, Culture, and Technology (ACT) of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), one of the state-of-the-art institutions on contemporary debate that sees new media and artistic creativity relating in a single field of research. Some of the visual artists examined here were members of the MIT community, contributing not only to the prestige of the institution, but also to a paradigm shift in the method by which a work of art is created, designed and perceived. Joan Jonas, New York artist and lecturer emeritus at ACT, has conducted avant-garde visual experiments aimed at combining the relationship between language and image, always using new performatic and digital aesthetics with which to narrate her personal visions. The artists Krzysztof Wodiczko and Antoni Muntadas, for over forty years at ACT have dedicated part of their research to the analysis of the interrelation between technology, artistic languages and social communication. Their artistic production stems from the use of new technologies that make it possible to overlap between literary and visual codes, thus proposing an alternative to the long tradition that separates the arts relegating them to autonomous practices.

The international standards for internal audit (IIA) created by the Internal Audit Institute in the United States are presently one of the most important bases for the practice of the internal audit profession. In this research, we assess the use of these principles in international groups through empirical studies, adopting an objective evaluation of the application of the standards. This multivariate statistical study was conducted in 2017 on more than 22 countries covering Africa, Middle East and Europe. Data was collected through a validated questionnaire covering two topics: general company information, and international internal audit standards applicability and relevance. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS-22 software (IBM, New York, USA). Results showed that audit quality components, information technology and accounting and finance have a favorable correlation with the international standards. In conclusion, these findings suggest such standards are expected to enhance the internal audit practice. As such, international companies should consider applying these standards in their core practice promote the application of the standards through complying their audit practice strategies to the regulations.

Many cities around the world encourage the transition to battery-powered vehicles to minimize the carbon footprint of the transportation sector. Deploying large-scale wireless charging infrastructures to charge electric transit buses when loading and unloading passengers have become an effective way to reduce emissions. The standard plug-in electric vehicles have a limited amount of power stored in the battery, resulting in frequent stops to refill the energy. Optimal siting of wireless charging bus stops is essential to reducing these inconveniences and enhancing the sustainability performance of a wireless charging bus fleet. Wireless charging is an innovation of transmitting power through electromagnetic induction to portable electrical devices for energy renewal. Online Electric Vehicle (OLEV) is a new technology that allows the vehicle to be charged while it is in motion, thus removing the need to stop at a charging station. Developed by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), OLEV picks up electricity from power transmitters buried underground. This paper aims to investigate the cost of the energy logistics for the three types of wireless charging networks: stationary wireless charging (SWC), quasi-dynamic wireless charging (QWC), and dynamic wireless charging (DWC), deployed at stops and size of battery capacity for electric buses, using OLEV technology for a bus service transit in the borough of Manhattan (MN) in New York City (NYC).

Abstract A stable isotope dilution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method is described for the determination of lead (Pb) in urine and whole blood. The use of lithium bis(trifluoroethyl)dithiocarbamate Pb(FDEDTC) as a chelating agent showed strong memory effect, restricting the range of Pb isotope ratios that can be measured in unknown samples. To overcome this carryover problem, we further derivatized the Pb(FDEDTC)2 chelate with 4-fluorophenyl magnesium bromide to form Pb(FC6H4)4. The sequential analyses of solutions of natural Pb and enriched 204Pb with Pb(FC6H4)4 chelate by GC-MS demonstrated no observable memory effect. Precision and accuracy of Pb isotope ratio measurements with Pb(FC6H4)4 were established, and the isotope dilution GC-MS method was validated by determining Pb concentrations in urine standards from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, urine and blood reference materials from the New York State Department of Health, and blood Pb survey samples from the College of American Pathologists.

Purpose Khalifa University of Science and Technology (KU) is one of the prominent Universities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), of the Government of Abu Dhabi. The new Khalifa University was re-constituted in the year 2017 by merging three higher education institutions in Abu Dhabi, the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research and the Petroleum Institute. The objectives of these institutions and their research areas were entirely disparate in the pre-merger era and hence the evaluation of the research performance of its pre-merged entities in the past is vital for Khalifa University to plan for the future course of actions. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach This study analyzes and visualizes scholarly publications of Khalifa University of Science and Technology (KU) using SCOPUS data. There are various qualitative and quantitative methods to measure research performance. This study adopted citation analysis, one of the widely recognized quantitative metrics to measure the citation impact of scholarly publications. Findings Khalifa University leads in productivity compared to other UAE universities but the citation impact of its publications is less in comparison to United Arab Emirates University and New York University, Abu Dhabi in terms of citations per publication. The majority of KU publications are not highly cited. The majority of the KU publications (80 percent) received fewer citations and few papers (20 percent of the KU publications) attracted 80 percent of the total citations received for KU publications. Analysis results indicate that publishing in top-ranked journals would improve the chance of getting more citations. On average, eight percentage difference is seen in the h-index of KU authors when removing self-citations. Research limitations/implications The study considered only publications that are indexed in SCOPUS. It covered a limited set of sources as per the SCOPUS editorial policy. Most of the covered sources are journals and conference proceedings. Books’ data coverage in Citation Index is comparatively low, which may affect results regarding social sciences and humanities publications because book publication is more prominent in these subject areas. Khalifa University is a science and technology university, and the majority of its academic departments fall in science and technology domains. Even though there are few arts and humanities departments in the University, it will not affect the overall findings of the results of the analysis. Originality/value This study is original research conducted to study the impact of research publications of Khalifa University using Scopus data.

Exploring future physicians’ attitudes toward vaccination is crucial as physicians’ recommendation is the top predictor for individuals to receive vaccines. This study explored the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines and the intention for future booster dose uptake among students at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM). Predictors for actual vaccine and intended booster uptake were also examined. An electronic survey was distributed to Osteopathic Medical Students (OMS I-IV) in the Spring of 2021. A total of 1331 students received the survey, with 316 responses received (24%). In total, 95.3% (301/316) of the respondents reported that they already received vaccines, while 3.1% (13/316) reported that they had not yet received a vaccine. Moreover, 88.9% of the respondents (281/316) were in favor of a booster dose, which was a strong predictor for actual vaccine uptake. We identified that the Asian race, pharmaceutical mistrust, building immunity via vaccines, adequate vaccine testing, and willingness to get non-U.S. manufactured vaccines are the most significant predictors for willingness to accept a booster dose. A very high COVID-19 vaccine uptake among NYITCOM OMS was found in our study. The study also observed a high acceptance of an additional dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in the future.

We report here results from two long-term studies of population effects of the porcine zona pellucida (PZP) immunocontraceptive vaccine, at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA, and at Fire Island National Seashore (FIIS), New York, USA. Annual population change at NIST was strongly correlated with population fertility (rP = 0.82, P = 0.001); when population fertility at NIST dropped below 0.40 fawns per female, the population declined. Contraceptive treatments at NIST were associated with a 27% decline in population between 1997 and 2002, and fluctuated thereafter with the effectiveness of contraceptive treatments. In the most intensively treated segment of FIIS, deer population density declined by ~58% between 1997 and 2006. These studies demonstrate that, in principle, contraception can significantly reduce population size. Its usefulness as a management tool will depend on vaccine effectiveness, accessibility of deer for treatment, and site-specific birth, death, immigration, and emigration rates.

Derek Moore was born in South Shields and studied at the local grammar school, from which he gained an Exhibition to Jesus College, Cambridge. However, before going to Cambridge he did his National Service in the Royal Air Force and was stationed in Yorkshire, where one of his fellow personnel was the poet Ted Hughes. He entered Jesus College in 1951, studying for the Mathematical Tripos, which he gained in 1954, and for Part III, which he gained in 1955. He then became a research student in applied mathematics and theoretical fluid mechanics under the supervision of Dr Ian Proudman and was awarded a PhD degree of the University of Cambridge in 1958. Thereafter he held positions at the University of Bristol, the Goddard Space Flight Center, New York, California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and Imperial College, London, where he spent the major part of his career. He became distinguished for the Moore-Spiegel oscillator and the Moore singularity. Moreover he had a strong interest in jazz, which is the subject of an appreciation by Peter Batten.

The National Economic Association introduced the W. Arthur Lewis Distinguished Lecture series in December 1985 at the Allied Social Sciences Association meetings in New York City. The Lewis Lecture is named in honor of the 1979 Nobel Laureate in Economics, much of whose research has been devoted to the problem of Third World economic development. In the same spirit, the Lewis Lectures are intended to explore the themes of global inequality, Third World poverty, and prospects and possibilities for change. The inaugural Lewis address was delivered by Lance Taylor, professor of economics and nutrition at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Taylor, an immensely creative economist, has led contemporary development economists in the analysis of disparities in the structural relationships between Northern (that is, more-developed) and Southern (that is, less-developed) countries. Taylor's subject matter, “Trade and Growth,” constituted both a provocative assessment of the state of knowledge in this area and a compelling indictment of the insights offered by conventional economics. Taylor's address, presented December 28, 1985, provides a sterling beginning to what promises to be an important lecture series.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, with new variants emerging and vaccine-induced immunity waning. Protecting and retaining the healthcare force remains crucial in fighting this pandemic, as healthcare workers (HCWs) are a critical driver in increasing vaccine uptake among the public. This study explored the uptake of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) booster shots among medical students at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM). Predictors for actual booster uptake were also examined. An electronic survey was distributed to Osteopathic Medical Students (OMS I-IV) in January 2022. The survey was distributed to 1762 students total, with 319 responses received (18%). Of those who responded, 70.2% (224/319) reported that they had already received a booster, while 29.5% (94/319) reported they had not yet received it. We identified that pharmaceutical mistrust, building long-lasting immunity via vaccines, and vaccines’ adverse effects were the most significant predictors for how willing participants were to accept a booster dose. Vaccine hesitancy around the COVID-19 booster was prevalent during the surge of the highly transmissible variant Omicron. This finding necessitates some evidence-based approaches to enhance booster uptake among a population subgroup whose impact is critical.
