Det Teosofiska Samfundet, bildat i USA 1875, gav även upphov till flera vitala sidogrenar som till exempel Antroposofiska Sällskapet, Temple of the People, the Arcane School, the ” I AM” Religious Activity, the Church Universal and Triumphant och Liberala Katolska kyrkan vilka idag fortfarande bedriver aktiv verksamhet.

The aims of this thesis are to provide a general overview of New Age spirituality/theology, and to organize this overview within a framework which highlights and explains many of the fundamental contradictions of the movement. The introductory section begins with a discussion of the problems associated with defining the New Age, and looks at some recent overviews of the movement. It goes on to highlight some of the fundamental contradictions of the New Age, and criticizes attempts by researchers to preserve the notion that it is something characterized by 'common values and a common vision.' The introduction moves on to outline the broad and heuristic framework that this thesis will employ in its overview of New Age spirituality. This framework makes an organizational division between 'patriarchal' and 'ecological' spirituality. The methodology section discusses research methods and definitions of key terms. My definition of 'patriarchal spirituality' is derived from ecofeminist theory. Given that ecofeininism is itself much associated with the New Age, my overview does in a sense reflect a 'New Age' approach to the New Age. 'Ecological' spirituality indicates more than simply concern with the interrelationships among organisms and their physical environment, although this concern is certainly expressed by those who embrace an ecological spirituality. The 'ecological' rubric is employed in a broader sense, indicating: 1) the belief that the earth and the cosmos are home to the human; 2) the belief that all things are interrelated and interdependent; 3) a high regard for 'diversity.' Part One examines the historical roots of the New Age. Part Two is concerned with New Age patriarchal spirituality. Part Three looks at New Age ecological spirituality, with particular emphasis upon Christian creation spirituality and feminist Wicca. The conclusion section highlights problems involved in attempting to make a clear division between these two New Age dynamIcs.

Annotation:
The 'New Age' encompasses many spiritualities, philosophies and alternative religions, such as Spiritualism, Wicca, Paganism and Theosophy, to name a few. Its cultural and ancestral threads, prior to the emergence of the contemporary New Age Movement in the early 1970s, is acknowledged by examining some prominent groups and individuals throughout history. Many comments on the New Age Movement, in the 1970s, 80s and 90s were dismissive. Through a survey done in 2007 amongst New Agers, for this thesis, those early judgements are examined to determine their relationship to the New Zealand experience. There was found to be divergence from international analysis where New Agers' age was concerned, their presumed connection to the 1960s counterculture, the assumptions that the New Age Movement is exclusively white, that science is a necessary part of belief and that New Age beliefs exist in opposition to cummunity needs. The focus is on the New Agers' within community, not their separation from it, for separation is a claim some overseas academics promoted as proof that the New Age is anti-community because of its individualism in belief seeking. Through this thesis the New Zealand New Ager is placed in relationship to the global New Age Movement by an academic who is 'of' the movement, not an academic 'outside looking in'. The experience of belief is looked at through the survey participants' eyes with the aim of claiming those experiences as 'mysticism'. This is approached by examining their 'contact' with the Divine/Godhead,through descriptions of altered/abstract realities. Any exclusivity the major religions have on mysticism is essentially 'removed' and given to the community as a concept attainable by those outside 'religion'; for example, the New Age Movement. The New Ager is seen both in the everydaty reality helping to create community, and although it is impossible to prove/examine coherantly, possibly in an altered/abstract reality/realities.

This study aimed at investigating how Internet users are dealing with the increase of interaction possibilities brought about by new communication devices and, specially, by the e-mail. An investigation was carried out with fifteen men and women who were at least twenty-five years old and had been using the Internet and e-mail programs for at least a year. An open-ended-question interview was conducted with each of them. After transcribed, the material collected in these interviews was analyzed through discourse analysis techniques. The results of this analysis made it possible to identify the emergence of three types of excess concerning the new forms of interaction: the excess of interaction, the excess of demand for interaction and the excess of incoming messages. These results also made it possible to conclude that these users are using different forms to deal with these excesses and to defend themselves from them. They give priority to urgent messages, open different e-mail accounts in order to separate different levels of intimacy, use at least one extra account so that they do not have to inform their personal address to sites or people they do not trust, quickly delete undesirable messages, use a special moment of the day to read and reply messages, and, finally, control - as well as reduce - the amount of e-mail contacts.

The new age has its origin in California and stems from the hippie movement. It's a trend marked by a world model very different from that of the western culture. This research explores different new age sources - from its beginings in previous centuries to its emergence in the modern world of the 70's - on historical, philosophical, sociocultural, artistic, scientific and religious levels. This research shows mat the new age, born in western christian society, draws several of its conceptions from other cultures : shamanism, hinduism, buddhism. This work also describes the concrete and psycho-mental tools and techniques which the new age makes use of and explains the paradigm and myths which grounds it: its rejection of christianity, of the rationalist science and of the predatory aspects of the western world, as well as the acceptance of a magical and mystical conception of the world. This work results in the updating of the archetype which underlines the new age, that of the + nonordinary healer of the world ;, i. E. A conviction - for the follower of the new age - of having outstanding powers of a magical nature, in order to provoke the transformation of the modern society to a golden age

Within the last two decades, the United States has witnessed the growth of a phenomenon which the media has referred to as "The New Age Movement". This multi-faceted social pattern includes astrology, meditation, mysticism, and eastern philosophies, the popularity of which have increased significantly in the 1980's. This thesis is a case study of the "New Age Movement". First, I develop a descriptive model of the key ideological themes and organizational structures of this social pattern. Subsequently, I organize this model in terms of several sociologically based theoretical frameworks including activity fads, social movements, and sociocultural shifts, in order to provide the most appropriate classification system. The results suggest that a synthetic model which utilizes elements of each of the individual perspectives is the most useful framework for analyzing a social pattern that is as broad and complex as "The New Age Movement".

In this thesis, I attempt to explore the development of migrant literature in an era of digitalcommunication. The latest developments in communication technology have certainlydestabilized patterns of content creation and dissemination. While many use it uncritically, mostly as a means of information and keeping in contact, there are new avenues open forthose who wish to engage actively and create a space for new dialogue. And though theseonline platforms have not completely overturned hierarchies between literatures from theWest versus the global South, they have certainly altered both the content and form of workoriginating from African countries. By doing so, digital technology has boosted the creationof an African identity that moves away from victimhood by reimagining ideas of what itmeans to be and write from an African perspective where a multiplicity and hybridity ofvoices exist. I have chosen three “digital migrant novels” (Caren Irr’s term): ChimamandaNgozi Adichihe’s Americanah, NoViolet Bulawayo’s We Need New Names, and Open Cityby Teju Cole. I begin by situating these novels in a technologically sophisticated, mediaoriented space, where the geography of nations is challenged by overlapping spaces of digitalcommunication. My aim is threefold – to identify new patterns in migrant identity and to seehow they are affected by technology use; to see whether these patterns correspond to theemergence of an Afropolitan identity (and to understand what permutations this Afropolitanidentity can take on). And and finally, to analyse how digital media communication shapes amigrant’s relationship to homeland and language.

Annotation:
This study does not purport to be an intellectual biography of Orage, nor does it claim to comprehend Guild Socialism in all of its forms. It is, rather, an attempt to analyse the influence of A.R. Orage and The New Age upon the development of Guild Socialist ideas. The first part of the study deals with the influence of Orage upon the development of Guild Socialism in The New Age. It concentrates upon the relationship between his philosophical and political ideas, and argues that the tension between his search for the spiritual liberation of the individual and his hopes for the liberation of the national character had significant repercussions on his relations with the guildsmen of The New Age. This is illustrated by focussing upon his dialogues with A.J. Penty, S.G. Hobson, Ramiro de Maeztu and Major C.H. Douglas. We find that Orage travelled through so many forms of Guild Socialism because none of his associates were able to satisfy his philosophical and political aspirations. The thesis then moves on to trace some of the ideas developed by Orage and The New Age and attempts to evaluate their impact upon two other Guild Socialist organisations. This section deals with selected themes and focuses, in particular, upon economic ideas, conceptions of the state, and industrial policies. It begins with an analysis of G.D.H. Cole and the National Guilds League, and concludes with chapters on Maurice Reckitt and the Church Socialist League. It is argued that Orage and his associates in The New Age were important in both the origins and development of Guild Socialism. In particular, they were responsible for developing 'right wing' ideas which attracted influential sections of the movement.

A competition is the rivalry between economic subjects selling (exporting) similar products and services with the goal of achieving revenue (domestic income) and market share growth. This is a core of the success or failure of a particular economic system. A competition may exist not only between companies. It may also exist between countries (the global competition); products (to reach a consumer’s “basket”); proactive and reactive business models; ideas or projects (for better funding); people (at the labor market); people and machines (in the new age of automation and digitalization of many business processes). Today, as many years ago, an important component of commercial success is the value created. However, the system of factors influencing the value created is becoming wider. The ratio of the costs of the main activity and the supporting activity comes to the fore.

Annotation:
This thesis explores career change transition through the stories of the lived experiences of mature age professionals who chose to make a career change into another profession by undertaking postgraduate coursework studies. The collection of evidence for the study spanned the time from when the participants started their postgraduate study program to make the career change, through their academic program and into their new careers – a period of 18 months for full time students and 30 months for part time students. Modern labour markets, with fast changing technology, increasingly mobile populations, and the constant generation of new jobs and skills have resulted in the model of lifelong employment with a single employer no longer being viable for many people. Individuals now have to manage career transitions throughout their lifespans, with the need for continuous learning and ongoing innovation. These transitions present many challenges for individuals, however, there have been relatively few studies that examine how individuals respond to the challenges of career transitions. This study sought to provide an insight into the transition experiences of individuals making a career change into a new profession. The study used an innovative research design that incorporated transition theory with narrative inquiry methodology in a longitudinal study. The integration of this theory and methodology enabled the research of the lived experiences of the participants as they moved through time during their transition. There were up to seven research conversations for each of the 17 study participants across the time of their transition. At any one moment, the participants’ stories outlined not only their current transition experiences, but also their past and imagined future experiences. This moving back and forward in time produced multilayered and reflexive stories of the transition experience, as changes in time and place often resulted in different transition issues being experienced. The findings of the study show that transition is not a linear process, but rather is dynamic, iterative and wave-like. Consequently a new model for transition is proposed. Transition experiences ebb and flow over time and place as the transition progresses. Some issues experienced during transition become more important at particular times, places and contexts, only to diminish as other issues come to the fore. Issues from earlier in the transition are often revisited in the later stages as individuals look back to their previous experiences and forward to imagined new experiences. The study found that transition occurs in the midst of ongoing lives in relation to time, place and personal and social conditions. It highlights the need for research into career change transition to acknowledge these factors, rather than taking a ‘snapshot’ of transition experiences at a particular time and place. In light of the study findings, a new career change transition model is proposed that incorporates the wave like iterative nature of transition and reaches in to the ‘settling in’ of the new career. Stories of transition experiences into a new career provide useful information for institutions and organisations that are responsible for the recruitment, academic programs, induction and mentoring of individuals who are undergoing transition in order to enter a new career. This knowledge will assist these mature age professionals in their transition, allowing them to bring their valuable skills and competencies to their new profession. In addition, individuals who are considering making a transition into a new career would find the stories of career change of interest.

Weston, Donna. „Music and Musical Thought of the New Age“. Thesis, Griffith University, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/366138.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
The aims of this paper are firstly to show the principal ways in which music and musical thought are associated with the New Age Movement and to demonstrate how these are related to New Age ideologies, and secondly to show that the musical thinking of the movement reflects a trend originating in the late nineteenth century. It is proposed that music plays an important and integral role within the movement, and that the way in which it is viewed in this context is not specific to the New Age, but rather is based on a tradition which can, like the movement itself, be traced back to late nineteenth century esoteric thought and indeed, further. Consequently, New Age music and its associated ideologies constitute the culmination of an important trend in musical thinking which stretches over an entire century and beyond. This proposal is based on two assumptions - firstly that a restricted number of themes can be identified as comprising New Age ideology, and secondly that these themes can be related to a wider, global paradigm shift. This is approached firstly through the identification of the ideologies and practices of the New Age Movement and how they are interrelated. The historical and sociological origins of the movement are then analysed to show that these practices and themes have much earlier precedents. From this information, a concise definition of the New Age Movement is identified, and the remainder of the paper is based upon this definition. The ideas represented in New Age musical texts are discussed and compared to determine common themes and how these relate to New Age ideology. This is followed by the analysis of a selection of European esoteric musical writings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is proposed that the same continuation of thought demonstrated earlier in the paper, that is from the esoteric movements of the nineteenth century into the era of the New Age Movement, is also present within esoteric musical thought. Therefore, the themes isolated as representative of the New Age Movement are recognisable in both the writings of the movement and those of the nineteenth century, continuing into the twentieth century. In an attempt to arrive at a stylistic description of New Age music, 133 CDs are analysed, which are representative of commercially available recordings of New Age music. The results of this musical analysis are then compared with the cover notes and illustrations to determine the relationship between the music and the extra-musical features of the CDs. The result of both the musical and extra-musical analysis is then compared with New Age ideology, with special reference to those themes outlined in the first chapters of the paper. The conclusion draws together this information to demonstrate that firstly, a distinct musical ideology, reflecting New Age themes, is an identifiable component of the movement. Secondly, that this musical thought is reflected in both New Age music, and in practices using music in the context of the New Age Movement. Finally, that this movement is a continuation of a trend in mystical thinking, or a spiritual movement which can be traced back to the nineteenth century, wherein it enjoyed an increase in popularity and exposure, and beyond. New Age music and musical thought are not exclusive to a contemporary movement, but rather are representative of a centuries old trend which is culminating now in what is known as the New Age Movement.

Decommissioned buildings and structures from the industrial age constitutes a challenge for many municipalities when society and the global economy changes. The transformation of the old sugar mill in Kävlinge originates from that shift – from the production of goods to an information and knowledge based society. How can this type of building be re-programmed as a stimulating place for sharing and acquire knowledge, and at the same time perform well in terms of energy? The sustainable strategies for energy preservation includes a new transparent second skin - a glass corridor facade, which stores the heat from the thermal mass (bricks). It also includes a passive ventilation system, using underground ducts to heat or cool the building depending on season.

Annotation:
The aim of this qualitative study of the New Age Movement (NAM) in Taiwan was to test the ideas about 'self-religion', 'reflexive modernisation' and 'globalisation' that underlie many sociological accounts of the New Age phenomena. It also explored the neglected issues of emotions and embodiment in New Age practices. By means of in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 40 participants in New Age activities, participant observation in two New Age courses about healing and documentary analysis, my project produced the following four conclusions. First, the characteristics of New Age spiritualities in Taiwan, such as 'spiritual but not religious' and 'transformational but not salvational', differ from those of the country's main religions and new religious groups. But many people in the NAM seek a new balance between 'tradition and modernity' or 'new age spiritualities and "old age" religions'. Second, changes in emotional states are critical for participants in New Age activities in terms of 'being healed' through a process of self-transformation. Participants experience emotional identification, display and experience, whilst also internalising a set of feeling rules based on the 'emotion ideology' of New Age spiritualities. Third, analysis of interviewees' biographical reconstructions of their experiences shows that the New Age can be regarded as an integral part of late modern society in Taiwan. Not only is the NAM mainly about self-reflexivity but it also influences the life politics of its followers. It can therefore serve as a source of 'alternative' expert knowledge in late-modern society. Fourth, the structure of the NAM in Taiwan can be described as a loose, web-like network. Furthermore, the globalised aspects of the movement cannot be regarded simply as an expression of 'Westernisation' or 'Americanisation', but should be properly understood as a process of 'parallel glocalization'. This thesis is an original combination of conceptual analysis, theoretical ideas and empirical investigation. Its main contributions are, on the one hand, to have integrated the New Age in Taiwan into theorising about late-modernity and globalisation and, on the other, to have placed emotions and healing at the center of the study of New Age activities.

Histological methods to estimate skeletal age at death, in forensic cases, are an alternative to the more traditional gross morphological methods. Most histological methods utilize counts of bone type within a given field for their estimation. The method presented in this paper uses the percentage area occupied by unremodeled bone to estimate age. The percentage area occupied by unremodeled bone is used in a linear regression model to predict skeletal age at death. Additionally, this method uses digital software to measure area rather than the traditional technique in which a gridded microscope is used to estimate area. The clavicle was chosen as a sample site since it is not a weight bearing bone and has little muscular insertion. These factors reduce the variation seen as a result of differences in lifestyle or activity pattern.

The last decade a number of digital mediums such as computers, internet, digital cameras and mobile phones have entered people’s lives. How have these mediums changed the way we communicate and consume media? This work examines two ongoing trends in this new digital media landscape. The first trend is about how newspapers have reshaped in the digital media landscape. The second trend is about personal publishing in general and blogging in particular. The questions asked are: How have the new mediums changed the way we communicate, create and consume media? And how are pictures used and what role do they play? It is important to ask these questions now when we are in the midst of a changing media landscape. A qualitative research approach with in-depth interviews, document analysis and a literature study has been performed. The thesis describes how people’s means for communication have changed through history. From the oral culture, the writing culture, the printing culture until the first media age and today’s new media age. It concludes that the new media age is different compared to the previous ages. Today’s communication and media flow is to a higher degree multi-directional compared to the previous ages. People have the means to respond and interact with traditional media such as newspapers. The interaction with the readers has become an important part of the publishing process. Personal publishing and blogging is blossoming and today there are numerous tools available for personal publishing of content at internet. The creation of digital content images and text has become easier and faster. The new digital technologies have eliminated the time and space boarders. Millions of mobile phones with inbuilt cameras results in that we witness pictures of situations we never had pictures of before. These pictures can easily be published for a large audience instantly regardless time and space. The new media age is about personalization and individualization of content creation, content publishing and content consumption. Interactivity is important and the main driver is communication between people.

When the cocktail of AIDS drugs called highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) was introduced in 1997, it radically changed the picture of HIV and AIDS in the U.S. Deaths from AIDS plummeted by two-thirds. Now, far fewer people are progressing along the once-inevitable path to illness and death. The impact of new therapy has been both dramatic and double-edged: it has spared tens of thousands from death, but has complicated their lives in countless ways. This newspaper series in five parts examines the new landscape of AIDS in the aftermath of success - a success that is still incomplete as there is still no cure. The new therapies carry literal side effects - the toxicities of drugs that infected individuals must take everyday for the rest of their lives. But the drugs have also created social and political side effects as AIDS is transformed to an increasingly chronic disease. The series relays the stories of HIV-infected individuals, clinicians, social workers, and AIDS service and prevention workers in Boston and examines how their lives and work have changed now that AIDS is no longer seen as a "crisis" in the U.S.

Annotation:
This thesis consists of a study of the motivational, cognitive and personality implications of adherence to New Age practices and beliefs. The New Age, unlike traditional Western religion, possesses no church-like structure and is usually characterised as a loose network of self-development practices, with a belief system centred on the spiritual evolution of the individual through successive reincarnations and the idea of a magical interconnectedness between all things. The studies carried out used a series of psychological measures, including self-report scales, analysis of self-concepts, autobiographical episodes and attributions to life events, and experimental visual and semantic tasks. Groups of traditional religious and non-religious individuals were also assessed to serve as contrasts to the New Age group. Following from previous sociological literature on the individualist character of the New Age, the first study dealt with individualist and collectivist motivations. New Age individuals were found to emphasise more individualistic values than Catholics, but still differed from non-religious individuals in that they stressed more self-transcendent universalism values and global-holistic self-concepts. This pattern was labelled as 'holistic individualism' and the second study sought to define it more accurately by focusing on the analysis of agency and communion motivations through the analysis of autobiographical episodes. In this study, the New Age group showed a higher frequency of agency and a lower frequency of communion themes than traditional religious and non-religious participants and, in particular, emphasised life stories of self-empowerment by non-material 'energies' or entities. The last two studies looked more closely at the New Age tendency towards highly abstract cognitions, in particular its sense of connectedness, by focusing on magical thinking and personality traits. New Age individuals were found to attribute events to magical rather than naturalistic causes much more often than the other groups. This cognitive disposition was confirmed in the last study, which found a positive association between the adherence to New Age practices and schizotypal personality traits, emotional hypersensitivity, and cognitive-perceptual looseness. Women were also found to be keener adherents to the New Age than men. Given this set of results, it is suggested that the New Age should be thought of primarily as a magical, rather than a religious, system of practices and beliefs. It is also proposed that an individual may be drawn to the New Age not only because of its modern individualistic appeal, but in virtue of possessing a particular personality and cognitive disposition towards magical ideation and unusual perceptual experiences.

The adoption of Green Marketing within the Swedish forest industry has raised questions as to why there has been an increase in implementation of the concept, and what the results have showed. After conducting eight semi-structured qualitative interviews with companies involved with forestry in Sweden, this paper has been able to showcase an in-depth analysis. The companies interviewed include a forest owner, five forestry companies, a packaging company, and a lobby initiative in Sweden. This has allowed the research to explore different perspectives in the forest industry. The answers derived from the interviews were for the most part in correlation to each other, and highlighted the similar ways to approaching Green Marketing within the Swedish forest industry. Public concern, governmental regulations, and opportunity to form strong relationships were all seen as reasonings behind the usage of Green Marketing. The Swedish forest industry has done very well in avoiding many Green Marketing mistakes, and has also showcased a strong effort in following what is known as the ‘Golden Rules of Green Marketing’.

The Age of Innocence is an opera based on the 1920 novel by Edith Wharton. Set in New York high society of the 1870's, it tells the story of Newland Archer, a young lawyer, his fiancée May Welland, and her cousin, the Countess Ellen Olenska, who has returned to her native New York in an aura of scandal, having left her husband, the dissolute Polish Count Olenski, in Europe. Although Archer and Ellen fall in love, he nevertheless follows the expectations of his family and marries the lovely but conventional May. For her part, while she sees a life with Archer as an escape from her loneliness, Ellen cannot allow herself to betray her cousin, insisting that she and Archer can love each other only if they remain apart. This love triangle is unique because of the social pressures placed upon Archer: he is a product of New York society, which has taught him to believe in the factitious idea of female innocence, as personified by May. Though he questions this and other conventions of his society, he is unable to bring himself to abandon the safety of these social norms that govern every aspect of proper behavior in New York. It is Archer's love for Ellen that prompts him to challenge these standards, pointing out New York's hypocrisy in welcoming May's cousin back to America while at the same time treating her as a pariah for abandoning her husband in Europe. None of their objections to Ellen is explicitly stated, however, for this is a world which has a morbid fear of "the unpleasant"--that is, anything that would disturb the calm surface of society's politesse and social grace. It comes as no surprise, then, that Archer's desire for Ellen (especially after he marries May), becomes a potential social nightmare for his family and all of New York, as they ruthlessly plot to drive the two apart, and send Ellen back to Europe. The main challenge in creating an opera out of this story, in addition to streamlining a lengthy and complex plot, was to delineate both in the libretto and the music the realms of the said and unsaid--that is, what the characters say in public, and what they say to themselves or to others that represents their innermost feelings. In the libretto, this was achieved by drawing upon Wharton's dialogue and narration in the novel in order to create these private and public utterances, in the form of recitatives, arias, duets, or ensemble pieces. The language of the libretto has been fashioned to serve these different musical forms, with dialogue from the novel employed in moments of recitative; and freely-metered verse, with a modest use of rhyme, for the "numbers" of the opera. The music, meanwhile, employs a system of codes to define the realms of the said and unsaid--motives, sonorities and key relationships that bring into focus the interactions of the characters, especially Archer, Ellen and May as their drama plays out under the ever-watchful eyes of New York society. The music has also been rendered to bring out the stresses and meter of the text, and heighten the import of the words as sung by a particular character. I have attempted in my opera to bring to life the timeless themes of Wharton's novel: unfulfilled love, the individual versus society, the potential corrupting influence of desire, and the moral choices that human beings face as they wrestle with these common issues. Opera, through the language of music, is one of the few art forms capable of fully realizing these themes in a dramatic context--in this sense, it is just as relevant to our time as it was to Wharton's, and therefore remains a viable medium for the twenty-first-century composer.
