The histochemical reaction catalyzes the NADPH-dependent reduction of tetrazolium dyes to colored insoluble formazans. Although the histochemical reaction has been widely employed in neuroanatomical and neuropathological studies, the identity of the enzyme responsible for the reaction has been unknown.
