Čini se da je Sveti Sava načinio koncepciju o Nemanji kao prvosvešteniku srpskoga naroda. To je trebalo da podupre njegovu apsolutnu svetovnu vlast među svojim narodom u svojoj državi. Takođe, trebalo je da trasira istu takvu ulogu njegovih naslednika na prestolu. Savini spisi jesu hrišćankog, crkvenog karaktera i kao takvi imaju specifične termine, pojmove i značenje. Međutim, Nemanjina vlast je ipak svetovna kategorija čijem opravdanju i jačanju su ti spisi, pored ostalog, služili. Zato u njima treba tražiti i svetovnu, političku svrhu. Vlast je kategorija koja od kada je sveta i veka pokazuje univerzalne karakteristike. Rimski carevi su se zbog pobede hrišćanstva morali odreći božanske uloge, ali su se baš zato grčevito držali prvosvešteničke uloge. Tu težnju pokazuje i Savin Nemanja. Neposredna Božja volja je nužna da stvori Zavet između Boga i izabranog naroda, ali je zato Božja promisao dovoljna da stvori prvosveštenika.

In the wider context of references to the "Greek" i.e. Byzantine Emperors in the first saints? lives of the Nemanjic dynasty, we turn our attention here to the nature and historical background of references to the Byzantine Emperor Alexios III Angelos in the founder?s Vita of the Venerable Simeon Nemanja by St Sava (written as a prologue of the Typikon for Studenica monastery), and the reasons for the omission of any such reference from the Vita of St Simeon Nemanja written by Stefan the First Crowned, both viewed in the context of the impact of current political circumstances on the historiographical criteria applied by the two writers as they assembled these official texts of celebrative, but also of historical and commemorative nature.

There is no doubt that, when it comes to the spiritual rooting of Serbs, and therefore the estabilishment of a national identity, the key place belongs to Saint Sava. He is the main constant, the spiritual vertical, the central figure in the histiry of the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Serbian people. Of all church dignitaries and saints, the cult of Saint Sava always occupied a central place. He is the creator of the Serbian Orthodox Church and the first Serbian archbishop. His role in the creation of the Serbian church, state and nation made him a fundamental figure in Serbian nationa history. Sain Sava began his historic mission by going to Mount Athos. He knew how important it was that his father Stefan Nemanja, the creatoir of the Serbian state from which the Serbs count their historical time, would join him there. And so it was, Nemanja stepped down from power, became a monk and followed in his son's aootsteps to Mount Athos. Together they built the Serbian monastery on Mount Athos - Hilandar, which would become a source of Serbian literacy, education and culture. Sava compiled a biography of his father, a work that is considered the beginning of Serbian literature. And with which the creation of Nemanja's cult, but also the cult of his family - the holy lineage of Nemanjić. Even before Nemanja, Serbs represented a political factor, sreated state unions that had their own cultural basis, legendary and historical traditions, but the real historical life of the Serbian people began with Stefan Nemanja. Sain Sava knew how important the close relationship between the church ant the state is for the future of the Serbian people, he was convinced that the mission of the church requires the support of the state and that the state, if it wants to be strong and stable, needs the support of the church. But it is also tempting to determinate the scope of work for each of them, because he also knew how dangerous it is if they start falling into each other's jurisdiction. The strenght and solidity of Sava's church was showen even after the collapse of the Serbian state, when it lived in foreign countries, because it became the property of the Serbian people with whom it shared its destiny - the church was the people, the people were the curch. These are the reasons for which it can rightly be said that, in addition to being the founder of the Serbian Church, which is the orginator of Serbian culture. Sain Sava is also the founder of the Serbian nation.

The paper deals with the chronology of the construction of the Studenica monastery and the historical context of Stefan Nemanja?s founding act. The study focuses on the data provided by early hagiographies of Stefan Nemanja, particularly on the information that the Serbian Grand Zupan issued a chrysobull for the monastery, as well as the reference to his title of samodrzac (autokrator). The emergence of Constantinopolitan influences during the construction of the monastery Studenica is associated with the political relations between the Byzantine Emperor Isaac II Angelos and Stefan Nemanja.

The paper analyses once again, based on written sources, the relationship between the uncle - the first Serbian archbishop, and his nephew - the second Serbian king of the Nemanjic dynasty. It also explores their relations with the Ohrid Archbishopric, i.e. its then archpastor Demetrios Chomatenos. Chronologically, the paper spans two decades between the foiled attempt at marrying Nemanja?s heirs with the Angeloi of Epiros by the middle of the second decade of the 13th century and Radoslav?s withdrawal from the historical stage by the middle of the fourth decade of the same century.

In the Copioso risretto de gli anali di Rausa (1605), written by the Ragusan chronicler Jakov Lukarevic (Giacomo Luccari), we find a report on the persecution of witches in the Nemanjic State. According to Lukarevic, grand zupan Stefan Nemanja and tsar Stefan Dusan persecuted witches in their country, and moreover, tsar Dusan burned the books of magic called ?Grominjak? in Slavic language. This report can?t be confirmed by any other historical source, contemporary or later, but we think that Lukarevic didn?t invent the story. We reckon that Lucarevic based his report on the persecution of witches on certain historical events. The persecution of heretics during Nemanja?s reign could?ve been that on which Lukarevic based his story of Nemanja?s persecution of witches. In the time of Stefan Dusan the legislation sanctioned the practice of magic (though, the practitioners are predominantly termed as males); perhaps the tsar has persecuted individually some wizards or sorcerers that had broken the law. But this certainly couldn?t have been a true witch hunt, like those that Lukarevic could?ve witnessed in his time. Likewise, Grominjak in fact could?ve been the same as gromovnik, an astrological and meteorological manual used in mediaeval Serbia for divination by thunders and earthquakes; this handbook could?ve seemed to Lukarevic as a real grimoire used for summoning demons. And since numerous manuscripts of gromovniks have survived, they obviously hadn?t been systematically destroyed by the authorities. Our conclusion is, therefore, that Jakov Lukarevic knew of some real events that were influenced by his own experience and knowledge which ultimately shaped his story into one of an early modern witch hunt ?transported? into mediaeval Serbian state.

The latest results of the investigation of the royal tombs at the monastery of Studenica, Serbia, have inspired a reconsideration of the place of burial of some members of the Nemanjic family. There is further evidence that the tomb and sarcophagus of the ktetor, Stefan Nemanja, formed part of the original design for the church. Based on their construction and comparative material, it is assumed that the relics of St Symeon, upon their translation to Studenica, were laid in the sarcophagus from which they exuded myrrh. The myrrh-exuding of St Symeon is looked at against the broader background of cult practice in the Byzantine world.

This PhD thesis investigates how the successors to the first ruler of an amalgamation of Serb lands, the Raškan Serb Veliki Župan, Stefan Nemanja, sought to create legitimacy for what otherwise may have been the passing successes of one local chieftain. The question is approached through the Lives of Nemanja written by his sons, Prvovenčani and Sava, whose tasks were to stabilise the immediate succession and consolidate the longer lasting power of the dynasty. Through a close reading of the two Lives, the thesis identifies and compares the motifs used by the authors to portray Nemanja as a saintly ruler divinely inspired by God to 'lead and unite' his people. Without an existing Serbian literary tradition, the thesis investigates how the authors found inspiration, looking first at the European-wide phenomenon of holy rulers and their associated texts, before considering the general literary environment surrounding the Raškan Serbs, to place the writing of Nemanja's Lives into context. The motifs highlighted in the Lives are compared with those in a selected group of texts, potentially available to the authors, to identify possible models which each other may have copied, adapted or transformed. The secondary objectives of the two authors, ruler and monk, will also be touched on bearing in mind the secular and sacred image of Nemanja being portrayed.

LLe but de ce travail est de présenter, à la lumière de l'hagio-biographie dynastique, la continuité (depuis la fin du XIIe jusqu'au milieu du XVe siècle) du système de l'idéologie politique de l'état médiéval serbe. Dans la continuité des textes qui suivent les grandes étapes du moyen âge en Serbie, se dessine l'histoire d'une pensée politique élaborée pour exprimer le bien-fondé et justifier la souveraineté de l'état nelanide au sein d'une hiérarchie de valeurs propre à la chrétienté byzantine. Ainsi l'idéologie des hagiographies royales devient-elle non seulement le miroir des idées reflétant les structures mentales, mais également un critère de légitimité sacrée et facteur actif d'une orientation politique. Fondateur de la dynastie nemanide (1166-1371), le grand joupan Stefan Nelanja, canonise saint Siméon le Myroblyte, devient la référence fondamentale du charisme souverain des rois de la "sainte lignée" et se révèle être un critère de légitimité dynastique pour tout souverain de Serbie. Pour aboutir à une synthèse historique de l'idéologie politique, dans le cadre du thème qui est le nôtre, nous avons soumis à une analyse chronologique tous les textes fondamentaux de l'hagiographie dynastique d'après les éditions et les études disponibles, en y apportant comme contribution particulière l’édition critique (avec traduction française et commentaires) de la dernière Vita encore inédite de saint Siméon Nemanja. Les textes liturgiques et hymnographiques, ainsi que les préambules des chartes royales, ont été utilisés d'une manière sélective, généralement dans les notes, pour compléter et collationner les notions contenues dans les courants d'idées dominants. Afin de situer le phénomène de la littérature dynastique dans son contexte historique, un résumé de l'histoire médiévale serbe constitue le premier volet de ce travail. Pour situer l'idéologie des hagio-biographies royales dans le contexte de la littérature et de l'historiographie officielles, ecclésiastique et profane, un aperçu chronologique de cette hagio-biographie dynastique est propose dans le deuxième volet de cette étude
The aim of this work is to present, in the light of the dynamic hagio-biography, the continuation (from the end of the 12th to the middle of the 15th century), of the system of political ideology of the medieval Serbian state. In the continuation of the texts which follow the great steps of the Serbian middle age, the history of elaborate political throught is drawn to express the merits and justify the sovereignty of the Nemanjan state in the midst of a hierarchy of values proper to byzantine christianity. Thus the ideology of royal hagiographies becomes not only the mirror of ideas reflecting mental structures, but also a criterion of sacred legitimacy and an active factor of a political orientation. Founder of the Nelanjan dynasty (1166-1371) Stefan Nemanja, canonised as saint Simeon the Myroblyte, became the basic reference of sovereign charisme of the kings of "holy descent" and is revealed as a criterion of dynastic for all socereigns of Serbia. For attaining a historic synthesis of the political ideology, in the framework of the theme that is ours, we have submitted to a chronological analysis all the basic texts of dynastic hagiography according to the editions and studies available, by adding to them as a special contribution the cristim edition (with French translation and comments) of the latest still unedited vita of saint Simeon-Nemanja. The liturgical and hymnographic texts, as well as the preludes of royal charters, have been used in a selective manner, generally in the notes, to complete and compare the notions contained in the dominating currents of throught. In order to situate the phenomen of dynastic literature in its historical context, a summary of Serbian medieval history constituted the first part of this work. For situating the ideology of royal hagio-biographies in the context of literature and official, church and profane historiography, a chronological glimpse of this dynastic hagio-biography is proposed in the second part of this study

This thesis seeks to understand and analyse HIV and AIDS and rural livelihoods in Zimbabwe with particular reference to an isolated and marginalised informal settlement called Chivanhu in Masvingo Province. The focus is specifically on questions around HIV susceptibility, AIDS vulnerability and household resilience. In this regard, it is important to recognise that HIV and AIDS cannot be lumped together as one medical or social condition. Rather, there is a progression from HIV infection to AIDS-related chronic illnesses to possible death, and livelihood strategies often alter along this HIV and AIDS time-line. Zimbabwe for over a decade now has gone through a series of economic and political crises which have impacted detrimentally on both urban and rural livelihoods, even for those households which are not directly affected by the HIV and AIDS pandemic. With the economy in free-fall, households have had to pursue a range of livelihood strategies in order to sustain themselves. These socio-economic conditions have in many ways facilitated susceptibility to HIV infection and vulnerability to AIDS. Many studies have examined this in relation to wellentrenched and stable communities in rural Zimbabwe. But the livelihood dynamics for such communities are significantly different to more unstable and informal settlements like Chivanhu, as thesis seeks to show. At the same time, the thesis offers a longitudinal study which is able to map the changes to the livelihoods of infected and affected households in Chivanhu. Though recognising the debilitating effects of the pandemic on these households, it also raises questions about the possible resilience of certain households despite great adversity. In doing so, it goes beyond the individual and household levels of analysis to consider the role of clusters (or groups of households) in responding to the impacts of HIV and AIDS. In this regard, particular emphasis is placed on gender and orphanhood. In the end, the thesis offers a nuanced analysis of the everyday complexities and challenges for affected households in a marginalised and informal rural community in Zimbabwe and thereby makes a contribution to re-theorising HIV and AIDS and rural livelihoods more broadly.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The genus Helicotylenchus Steiner of the family Holplolaimidae is reviewed. The different morphometric and morphological characters used in species description are discussed. Thirty-five species occurring in South Africa, French Guiana and the French Caribbean Islands are redescribed, based on type and other material. A new species, viz. H. marethae n.sp. is described from South Africa. Apart from line drawings SEM micrographs are included for most species.

Em ensaios de casa-de-vegetação, primeiramente foi avaliada a reprodução de Pratylenchus brachyurus em oito cultivares de algodoeiro, que foram: IAPAR 71-Paraná 3; IAC 20; CS 50; CNPA 717; IAC 87; CNPA-Precoce 2; IAC 21 e IAC 22.Posteriormente foram selecionadas duas cultivares para estudar a patogenicidade do nematóide, inoculando-se diferentes níveis de população inicial; 0 (testemunha); 333; 1000; 3000; 9000 e 27000 nematóides/planta. As avaliações foram com base nos números de nematóides extraídos do sistema radicular e do solo e nos fatores de reprodução. Nos estudos de patogenicidade foram coletados também os seguintes dados de crescimento das plantas; altura de planta, massa fresca de sistema radicular e massa seca de parte aérea. Entre as oito cultivares em que se avaliou a reprodução, foi possível identificar IAPAR 71-Paraná 3 e IAC 20 como as melhores hospedeiras do nematóide, nas quais a população final do nematóide foi significativamente maior que em IAC 22. Para os estudos de patogenicidade foram selecionadas as cultivares IAC 20 e IAC 22, que, entre as mais utilizadas comercialmente, permitiram a maior e a menor reprodução do nematóide, respectivamente. Ambas as cultivares tiveram o crescimento prejudicado pelo nematóide e as reduções de crescimento das plantas inoculadas em relação à testemunha foram mais acentuadas nos níveis mais altos de inóculo. A regressão linear foi significativa para massa fresca de sistema radicular da cultivar IAC 20 e para massa seca de parte aérea, de ambas as cultivares

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) epidemic has had massive detrimental impacts on rural communities across Africa including in Zimbabwe. In response to the HIV and AIDS epidemic, the government of Zimbabwe has developed and adopted comprehensive programmes to address HIV and AIDS prevention, care and support. One of the critical components of these programmes relates specifically to treatment of the HIV infected given that HIV and AIDS is increasingly seen as a manageable threatening disease. However the success and effectiveness of the treatment regimen (involving antiretroviral drugs or ARVs) is dependent heavily on complete adherence to the rigid and complex regimens. It is against this background that this thesis studies a particular rural community in Zimbabwe called Chivanhu (in Masvingo Province) in terms of the relationship between rural livelihoods and HIV and AIDS (particularly HIV treatment and treatment adherence). Unlike other rural communities (notably in communal areas), Chivanhu is an informal and unstable community with a turbulent history. Most rural studies of HIV and AIDS in Zimbabwe and elsewhere in the region have focused on well-established and stable communities in which agricultural production is still of some significance. In such communities, the impact of HIV and AIDS on livelihoods is severe but, in more informal settlements, the vulnerability of households to the epidemic (and challenges pertaining to treatment adherence) is even more pronounced. Using a rural livelihoods framework, this thesis seeks to identify, understand and analyse the conditions which shape levels of adherence to HIV and AIDS in the informalsettlement of Chivanhu in Zimbabwe.

Com o objetivo de identificar espécies de plantas que possam ser utilizadas em estratégias de controle de nematóides, seja em esquemas de rotação de culturas ou, isoladamente, como planta antagonista, foram avaliadas as reações de oito espécies de plantas medicinais em relação a Meloidogyne incógnita raça 2, Meloidogyne javanica e Pratylenchus brachyurus. O estudo constou de três ensaios, um para cada espécie de nematóide, cada qual compreendendo nove tratamentos, ou seja, as oito espécies de plantas medicinais mais a testemunha ou padrão suscetível. As parcelas foram representadas por um vaso contendo uma planta, com cinco repetições. Cada planta foi inoculada com uma média de 5000 ovos para as espécies de Meloidogyne e 600 espécimes para Pratylenchus brachyurus. As reações das plantas foram avaliadas após aproximadamente 60 dias da inoculação, de acordo com o índice de massas de ovos e fator de reprodução no caso dos nematóides das galhas e fator de reprodução no caso de Pratylenchus. As espécies Achillea millefolium (mil-folhas), Bryophyllum calycinum (folha-da-fortuna) e Arctium lappa (bardana) foram consideradas resistentes às 3 espécies de nematóides estudadas apresentando-se, portanto, como instrumento útil ao controle destes parasitos, prestando-se à ocupação de áreas infestadas por esses nematóides.

This chapter discusses the process of change in the political balance between medieval Serbia and Diokleia from the end of the eleventh until the middle of the twelfth century, the period in which Serbia emerged not only as a dominant force in the region, territorially demarcated by the traditional Bulgarian lands in the east, Hungary in the north, the Adriatic sea in the southwest and Byzantine Empire in the south and southeast, but also as a completely new political phenomenon. It shows that the political turnaround in the second half of the twelfth century through the instalment of Stephen Nemanja as great zhupan of Serbia by emperor Manuel I Komnenos was complemented by Nemanja’s conscious efforts to change the ideological basis of his polity, embracing strongly not only the primacy of Byzantine emperor but Constantinopolitan Orthodoxy as well.

The subject of this analysis is the issue of corporal punishment in Serbian law, starting with Nemanjić Serbia, and up to the 70s of the XIX century, when corporal punishment was deleted from the penal system of Serbia. In Nemanjić Serbia, there were three types of corporal punishment, namely mutilation, branding and beating. For the regulation of these corporal punishments, the writer of Dušan's Code used Byzantine law as a model. Due to the Turkish occupation, the Nemanjić legal system was destroyed. Therefore, a new legal development on the territory of Serbia occurred only at the beginning of the 19th century. On this occasion, the penal system of insurgent Serbia is being built on European foundations. Thus, in terms of corporal punishment, in addition to the former punishment of beating, two of the harshest European penalties are prescribed - the so-called wheel and penalty of whipping. Punishments of the wheel and whip survived on the territory of Serbia until the 1850s, while, due to the severe renunciation of corporal punishment, the punishment of beating lasted until the 70s of the 19th century. Therefore, the paper made a legal-historical review of the development of corporal punishments and the reasons for their abolition.

The church of Taxiarches is one of the most important monuments of the Paleologan era in Thessaloniki. During its long life, it underwent several modifications, that blurred its original dedication and func- tion. The present study investigates the building phases of the monument and attempts their dating. It bases the research on architectural drawings, old and updated, morphological and constructional observations, Byzan- tine and modern written sources, painting analysis and dating, and urban location evidence. The study argues that Taxiarches should have been the Hilandar metochion in Thessaloniki founded by St. Savas Nemanjić at the dawn of the thirteen century and dedicated to St. George. The church itself was built on a pre-existing structure. The Nemanjić church was burnt and collapsed. In 1316−17 it was restored and decorated by King Milutin.

Dviratis yra matomas kaip darnios susisiekimo sistemos dalis, jis užtikrina aplinkos apsaugą, ekonominę gerovę bei socialinę gerovę. Tačiau tuo pat metu besinaudojantys dviračiu yra patys pažeidžiamiausi eismo dalyviai ir, nepaisant infrastruktūros kokybės gerinimo, eismo įvykių, susijusių su dviračių vairuotojais, skaičius nemažėja taip, kaip tikėtasi. Straipsnyje analizuojami naujausi moksliniai straipsniai, susiję su pagrindiniais veiksniais, lemiančiais pasirinkimą atlikti keliones dviračiais, – oro sąlygomis, reljefu, infrastruktūros kokybe, saugumu, socialiniais pokyčiais. Straipsnyje atlikta ir naujausių mokslinių tyrimų analizė, susijusi su eismo įvykiais, kurių metu sužeidžiami dviračių vairuotojai. Nustatomos dažniausiai pasitaikančių eismo įvykių rūšys bei jų sąsaja su susisiekimo infrastruktūros planavimu.

The paper aims to explore and present lives and relationship between Serbian King Stephen Uroš II Milutin and his wife Hungarian princess Elizabeth Árpád as the link between the East and West during the important reign of Paleologos dynasty in Byzantium. This will be done by looking at marital policies of Hungary, Serbia and Byzantium, the rela- tionship between Milutin and Elizabeth in the context of their respective previous ones, their later life and sainthood. The new possibility regarding the meaning of their daughter’s name was offered and new conclusion con- cerning Elizabeth’s place of burial is reached.
