Thiourea-modified poly(acrylonitrile-co-acrylic acid) (TU-poly(AN-co-AA)) polymeric adsorbent was synthesized and characterized with Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Zetasizer. Adsorptive removal of cationic malachite green (MG) dye from aqueous solution in a continuous TU-poly(AN-coAA) packed-bed column was studied. The influences of solution pH (2-9), inlet MG concentration (25-80 mg/L), bed depth (4-8 cm) and linear flow rate (1.5-5.0 mL/min) were investigated via assessment of the column breakthrough curves. Low pH and short bed depth, high MG concentration and flow rate led to early breakthrough of MG. According to correlation coefficients (R2) and sum of the squares of the errors (SSE) values, Thomas and Yoon-Nelson dynamic models are more suitable to describe the column experimental data compared to the Bohart-Adams model. TU-poly(AN-co-AA) exhibited effective separation of MG from the liquid phase and displayed high adsorption capacities after five regeneration cycles.

Am. Chem. Soc. 104, 4703-4705], indicate that most of the iron centres are not co-ordinated to light (oxygen, nitrogen) atoms. This demonstrates that presently available chemical models for FeMoco are inadequate.

Zn1−xCoxO nanoparticles with three different values of ‘x’ (x = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15) were prepared by chemical co-precipitation process without any further heat treatment. The X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the wurtzite hexagonal crystal structure for synthesized Zn1−xCoxO nanoparticles. The dislocation density results reveal that there is an increase in the concentration of lattice imperfections with increasing the concentration of Co ions. The true values of lattice constants were calculated by using Nelson–Riley Function (NRF). Further, the average bond length (BL) were also calculated and presented. The optical and magnetic properties of Zn1−xCoxO nanoparticles were examined by room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), respectively. The calculated values of magnetic susceptibility for Zn1−xCoxO nanoparticles with x = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 were found to be 9.883×10−4, 2.29×10−2 and 2.37×10−2, respectively.

Research in the field of metacognition, a multifaceted phenomenon, is in the main fragmented without much theoretical integration of the findings related to its various facets. Moreover, metacognition is usually conceived of as an individual and conscious process that serves the regulation of cognition. However, there is growing evidence that metacognition also functions at a nonconscious level, is involved in the co-regulation of cognition in collaborative settings, and interacts with affect in the self-regulation of behavior. Based on these considerations, a multifaceted and multilevel model of metacognition is proposed that broadens Nelson and Naren’s conceptualization of metacognition. The implications for theory and measurement of metacognition as well as for interventions involving metacognition are explored.

AbstractEmerging in the early 1970s, the work of Outlaw country artists might be heard as exploring a crisis of masculinity resulting from developments in the women's liberation movement. Building on recent research in recorded sound studies, this essay explores how the vocal staging practices deployed in Outlaw country recordings offer a unique musical exploration of the duality of the outlaw's masculinity. Using case studies drawn from Waylon Jennings' Outlaw-era recordings, this article examines how Jennings, working with co-producers ‘Cowboy’ Jack Clement, Chips Moman and Willie Nelson, among others, deployed vocal staging practices in conjunction with other musical practices to construct narratives that reveal the ‘outlaw’ character's psychological turmoil and reflect the complicated state of working-class American masculinity in the age of women's liberation.

This study delves into the simultaneous adsorption of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and colour from tannery wastewater using bone char through a fixed bed column. The bone char, which was derived from cattle skulls, was characterised using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Braeuer–Emmett–Teller surface area analysis, and the scanning electron microscope/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The effects of different process conditions, specifically, packed bed height (5, 10, and 15 cm) and flow rate (2, 5, and 8 mL/min), on the adsorption efficiency of the fixed bed column were assessed through breakthrough curve analysis. The results revealed that the efficiency of the column bed enhanced with increasing bed height and declined with increasing wastewater flow rate. The optimal operating conditions for COD and colour removal onto the bone char occurred at 15 cm bed height and 2 mL/min flow rate. The adsorption capacities at these conditions were 227.4 mg/g and 53.03 Pt-Co/g for COD and colour, respectively. The kinetics associated with the fixed bed adsorption of COD and colour onto bone char were elucidated through the fitting of the Thomas, Adams–Bohart, and Yoon–Nelson models to the experimental data. Among the three models, the Yoon–Nelson model gave the best prediction of the experimental data. Maximum adsorption efficiencies of 80.65% and 84% were attained for COD and colour removal, respectively, proving that bone char is a promising and ecologically friendly alternative adsorbent for the treatment of tannery wastewater.

Laterally-moving sprinkler irrigation systems under low pressure experience problems including small spraying range, low uniformity, surface runoff, and low water utilization rate. To solve these problems, experiments were carried out on a laterally-moving sprinkler irrigation system using a Nelson D3000 sprinkler (Nelson Irrigation Co., Walla Walla, WA, USA) under low pressure, sinusoidal oscillating water flow. The sprinkler intensity and impact kinetic energy intensity distribution were investigated for sprinklers both static and in motion. The test data were used to calculate combined sprinkler intensity and impact kinetic energy intensity uniformity for different nozzle spacings, and were compared with constant water pressure test results. It was found that sinusoidal oscillating water flow can effectively increase spraying range, as well as reducing the peak value of the sprinkler intensity and impact kinetic energy intensity. Within an optimal range of amplitude and nozzle spacing, sinusoidal oscillating water flow significantly improves the combined sprinkler intensity, impact kinetic energy intensity uniformity, and the spraying quality of laterally-moving sprinkler irrigation systems under low pressure conditions. When the average water pressure is 100 kPa, the optimal range of amplitude of sinusoidal oscillating flow applied to the laterally-moving sprinkler irrigation system is 50–60 kPa. When the amplitude is 50 kPa, the optimal nozzle spacing is 3.5–4 m; when the amplitude is 60 kPa, the optimal nozzle spacing is 3.5–4.5 m. The related parameters can provide a reference for the application of sinusoidal oscillating water flow in laterally-moving sprinkler irrigation systems.

Chloroquine phosphate (CQP) is effective in treating coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); thus, its usage is rapidly increasing, which may pose a potential hazard to the environment and living organisms. However, there are limited findings on the removal of CQP in water. Herein, iron and magnesium co-modified rape straw biochar (Fe/Mg-RSB) was prepared to remove CQP from the aqueous solution. The results showed that Fe and Mg co-modification enhanced the adsorption efficiency of rape straw biochar (RSB) for CQP with the maximum adsorption capacity of 42.93 mg/g (at 308 K), which was about two times higher than that of RSB. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms analysis, as well as the physicochemical characterization analysis, demonstrated that the adsorption of CQP onto Fe/Mg-RSB was caused by the synergistic effect of pore filling, π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding, surface complexation, and electrostatic interaction. In addition, although solution pH and ionic strength affected the adsorption performance of CQP, Fe/Mg-RSB still had a high adsorption capability for CQP. Column adsorption experiments revealed that the Yoon–Nelson model better described the dynamic adsorption behavior of Fe/Mg-RSB. Furthermore, Fe/Mg-RSB had the potential for repeated use. Therefore, Fe and Mg co-modified biochar could be used for the remediation of CQP from contaminated water.

The 1963–64 trial of Nelson Mandela and other leading members of the liberation movement was a political trial par excellence. In the courtroom, the Apartheid government was trying the accused for the crime of sabotage but in the court of public opinion, it was using the event of the trial to produce images and ideas aimed at slandering and discrediting the African National Congress (ANC) and the movement for a free and democratic South Africa. The defendants, on their part, used their trial to denounce the racist policies of Apartheid and to outline their vision of a post-Apartheid society. In this article, I want to read Nelson Mandela’s counter-historical mobilization of lived experiences and memories of Africans – the scars, chains, the rage and Apartheid’s unlivable juridical bind – as an act of epistemic resistance that re-opened epistemic battles and effected epistemic renegotiations. By submitting himself to the very law he denounces, strategically positioning himself at law’s aporetic sites and moments – those most fragile frontiers that are so heavily policed from transformative interventions – he bears witness to Apartheid’s rotten foundation. Drawing on modes of critique that are performative and genealogical, those that are possible within law’s frameworks and categories, Mandela both obeys and defies the law, uses and critiques it, resists and claims authority, at the very site he is called to account for charges of sabotage. The article will show, how, by attending to contradictions, discursive dynamics, and points of tension, Mandela the accused creates conditions of possibility for forms of critique that register without being co-opted or domesticated by the discourse and the system it resists.

This article examines aspects of the complex relationship between South Africa and the rest of Africa from the presidency of Nelson Mandela through those of Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma, showing how the relationship changed over time and exploring the influences that shaped South Africa’s policy on and toward the continent—a policy that has largely been determined by the presidency rather than the Department of Foreign Affairs/International Relations and Co-operation. To understand the changing relationship between South Africa and the rest of the continent, it is necessary to consider, first, the history before 1994, then the dramatically altered situation that the transfer of power in South Africa brought about, Thabo Mbeki’s interventionist approach to Africa in general, and Jacob Zuma’s ambiguous involvement in continental affairs. The article concludes with some speculative thoughts on the role that South Africa may play on the continent in the future.

We have recently demonstrated that changes in the work of breathing during maximal exercise affect leg blood flow and leg vascular conductance (C. A. Harms, M. A. Babcock, S. R. McClaran, D. F. Pegelow, G. A. Nickele, W. B. Nelson, and J. A. Dempsey. J. Appl. Physiol. 82: 1573–1583, 1997). Our present study examined the effects of changes in the work of breathing on cardiac output (CO) during maximal exercise. Eight male cyclists [maximal O2 consumption (V˙o 2 max): 62 ± 5 ml ⋅ kg−1 ⋅ min−1] performed repeated 2.5-min bouts of cycle exercise atV˙o 2 max. Inspiratory muscle work was either 1) at control levels [inspiratory esophageal pressure (Pes): −27.8 ± 0.6 cmH2O], 2) reduced via a proportional-assist ventilator (Pes: −16.3 ± 0.5 cmH2O), or 3) increased via resistive loads (Pes: −35.6 ± 0.8 cmH2O). O2 contents measured in arterial and mixed venous blood were used to calculate CO via the direct Fick method. Stroke volume, CO, and pulmonary O2 consumption (V˙o 2) were not different ( P > 0.05) between control and loaded trials atV˙o 2 max but were lower (−8, −9, and −7%, respectively) than control with inspiratory muscle unloading atV˙o 2 max. The arterial-mixed venous O2difference was unchanged with unloading or loading. We combined these findings with our recent study to show that the respiratory muscle work normally expended during maximal exercise has two significant effects on the cardiovascular system: 1) up to 14–16% of the CO is directed to the respiratory muscles; and 2) local reflex vasoconstriction significantly compromises blood flow to leg locomotor muscles.

Reverse genetics systems for viruses, the technology used to generate gene-engineered recombinant viruses from artificial genes, enable the study of the roles of the individual nucleotides and amino acids of viral genes and proteins in infectivity, replication, and pathogenicity. The successful development of a reverse genetics system for poliovirus in 1981 accelerated the establishment of protocols for other RNA viruses important for human health. Despite multiple efforts, rotavirus (RV), which causes severe gastroenteritis in infants, was refractory to reverse genetics analysis, and the first complete reverse genetics system for RV was established in 2017. This novel technique involves use of the fusogenic protein FAST (fusion-associated small transmembrane) derived from the bat-borne Nelson Bay orthoreovirus, which induces massive syncytium formation. Co-transfection of a FAST-expressing plasmid with complementary DNAs encoding RV genes enables rescue of recombinant RV. This review focuses on methodological insights into the reverse genetics system for RV and discusses applications and potential improvements to this system.

Abstract We investigate whether increasing the education quality causes increases in economic growth allowing poorer countries to catch up. To this end, we extend Nelson-Phelps's classic paper by introducing differences in education quality (proxied by students' performance on the Program for International Student Assessment [PISA] test) in a leader-follower type of growth model with knowledge diffusion. We use students' performance in a standardized international PISA test to measure education quality's impact on economic growth using a panel Vector Error Correction allowing for cross-correlation in the co-integration analysis in a set of all countries observed over the years 1975–2018. Additionally, we consider the possible reverse causality that characterizes economic development and the quality of education. Our results confirm the relevance of education quality as a significant causal factor of economic growth. However, further analyses indicate that the discussed relation is long-run, which may have important implications for policymakers.

Annotation:

Proper remediation of aquatic environments contaminated by toxic organic dyes has become a research focus globally for environmental and chemical engineers. This study evaluates the adsorption potential of a polymer-based adsorbent, thiourea-modified poly(acrylonitrile-co-acrylic acid) (T-PAA) adsorbent, for the simultaneous uptake of malachite green (MG) and methylene blue (MB) dye ions from binary system in a continuous flow adsorption column. The influence of inlet dye concentrations, pH, flow rate, and adsorbent bed depth on adsorption process were investigated, and the breakthrough curves obtained experimentally. Results revealed that the sorption capacity of the T-PAA for MG and MB increase at high pH, concentration and bed-depth. Thomas, Bohart-Adams, and Yoon-Nelson models constants were calculated to describe MG and MB adsorption. It was found that the three dynamic models perfectly simulate the adsorption rate and behavior of cationic dyes entrapment. Finally, T-PAA adsorbent demonstrated good cyclic stability. It can be regenerated seven times (or cycles) with no significant loss in adsorption potential. Overall, the excellent sorption capacity and multiple usage make T-PAA polymer an attractive adsorbent materials for treatment of multicomponent dye bearing effluent in a fixed-bed column system.

This paper is about dialogic listening as a precondition for meaningful engagement in Socratic dialogues and for music. In order to arrive at a better understanding of what constitutes dialogic listening in the context of educational philosophical dialogues, I first shed light on the practice of philosophy teaching based on Nelson & Heckmann’s neo-Socratic paradigm and link this practice to Plato’s dialogues. I then argue that the activity of listening to an interlocutor during Socratic dialogues on the one hand, and listening to music on the other, may in both cases be understood as a precondition for the process of engagement and, consequently, the co-creation of meaning as a central objective to the philosophical practice. I show this by discussing both Buber and Gadamer, combining their insights into three interrelated features of dialogic listening: 1) openness, 2) reciprocity, and 3) awareness, which apply to both philosophical dialogues and music. Ultimately, I attempt to make a case for the complementary application of music in the philosophical educational practice.

Carbon isotopes are analyzed for the first time from the Ordovician–Silurian boundary interval in the Williston and Hudson Bay basins of Manitoba, revealing a prominent positive excursion. The nature of this excursion and its co-occurrence with the appearance of the Ozarkodina hassi Conodont Zone and a distinctive coral-dominated macrofauna indicate that this is the upper portion (Metabolograptus persculptus Graptolite Zone) of the globally recognized Hirnantian isotopic carbon excursion (HICE). As a result, the Ordovician–Silurian boundary is placed at a higher position than previously thought, at the disconformable Stonewall – Fisher Branch formational boundary in the Williston Basin, and probably the Port Nelson – Severn River formational boundary in the Hudson Bay Basin. Disconformities within sections suggest periods of nondeposition due to subaerial exposure as sea level fluctuated during the Late Ordovician glaciation. Latest Ordovician (Hirnantian) deposition was far more widespread on the Laurentian craton than realized previously. Age determination and correlation having unprecedented precision are attainable within and between the Williston and Hudson Bay basins, and beyond.

NF1 (nuclear factor 1) binds to two upstream elements of the human ANT2 (adenine nucleotide translocator-2) promoter and actively represses expression of the gene in growth-arrested diploid skin fibroblasts [Luciakova, Barath, Poliakova, Persson and Nelson (2003) J. Biol. Chem. 278, 30624–30633]. ChIP (chromatin immunoprecipitation) and co-immunoprecipitation analyses of nuclear extracts from growth-arrested and growth-activated diploid cells demonstrate that NF1, when acting as a repressor, is part of a multimeric complex that also includes Smad and Sp-family proteins. This complex appears to be anchored to both the upstream NF1-repressor elements and the proximal promoter, Sp1-dependent activation elements in growth-arrested cells. In growth-activated cells, the repressor complex dissociates and NF1 leaves the promoter. As revealed by co-immunoprecipitation experiments, NF1–Smad4–Sp3 complexes are present in nuclear extracts only from growth-inhibited cells, suggesting that the growth-state-dependent formation of these complexes is not an ANT2 promoter-specific event. Consistent with the role of Smad proteins in the repression complex, TGF-β (transforming growth factor-β) can fully repress ANT2 transcription in normally growing fibroblasts. Finally, pull-down experiments of in vitro transcribed/translated NF1 isoforms by GST (glutathione transferase)–Smad and GST–Smad MH fusion proteins indicate direct physical interactions between members of the two families. These findings suggest a possible functional relationship between the NF1 and Smad proteins that has not been previously observed.

Polycrystalline cobalt substituted Ni – Zn ferrite with composition Ni 0.65-x Co x Zn 0.35 Fe 2 O 4(x = 0.00–0.25 insteps of 0.05) have been prepared through the conventional solid state ceramic method. Calcination and sintering have been performed in air atmosphere at 950°C and 1250°C for 4 h and 2 h, respectively followed by natural cooling to room temperature. X-ray diffraction patterns of all samples indicated the formation of the single spinel structure and the accurate lattice parameter for each composition has been determined using the Nelson–Riley error function. The increase in lattice constant on cobalt substitution is attributed to the ionic radius difference between the displaced and the substituted ion. The variation in lattice constant on incorporation of Co 2+ ion indicates its solubility into the spinel lattice and noticeable modification in structural properties have been observed. The observed increase in the saturation magnetization and Curie temperature with the increase in the Co 2+ substitution is due to its higher magnetic moment compared to that of Ni 2+, improvement in the A–B exchange interaction mechanism and large positive contribution to magnetic anisotropy due to presence of Co 2+ when they are at the octahedral sites. The observed variation in the initial magnetic permeability and the magnetic loss factor with cobalt substitution measured at a low frequency of 1 KHz have been attributed to the modification in the density, porosity, grain size and anisotropy contributions. A nearly comparable variation is observed in the room temperature dc electrical resistivity and activation energy for conduction and is attributed to the modification in structure, role and nature of cobalt ions and the microstructure aspects like grain size and pore concentration. The activation energy values in the range of 0.28 to 0.36 eV suggest a possible electron hopping. The observed changes in the structural and the magnetic and electrical properties have all been discussed in the light of exiting understanding.

In teacher education, the integration of theory and practice is perhaps best manifested in work-integrated learning (WiL), which entails the merging of academic and professional knowledge domains (CHE 2011). The redesign of current BEd programmes at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) to align with the Faculty of Education’s new vision and mission started in 2011. Rigorous interrogation of previous and current paradigms and practices led to uncomfortable awareness of the lack of relevance of teacher preparation programmes in relation to conditions in the majority of schools in the country. Furthermore, the undesired schism between theory and practice was clearly exacerbated by the existing teaching practice model. The primary challenge was to design integrated, coherent new BEd programmes, to be responsive to the realities of the majority of South African schools, and to facilitate the connection between theory and practice in the teacher education programme. The study described in this article responded to this challenge through the application of a humanising curriculum framework that had been co-constructed within the Faculty. It led to the implementation of ‘learning walks’, the name given to the dialogic spaces which were created to develop and inform a new model of WiL.

Hina Jilani is one of Pakistan’s most influential human rights activists and a leader of Women’s Action Forum, the group that began the modern women’s movement in the country. She co-founded the first women’s law firm and legal aid organisation, AGHS, and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. At the international level she has held numerous positions as well. She is a member of the Eminent Jurists Panel on Terrorism, Counterterrorism and Human Rights. In 2009, she was appointed to the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict. She was also UN Special Representative on Human Rights Defenders (2000–2008); appointed to the UN International Fact-Finding Commission on Darfur (2006); and served as President of the World Organisation Against Torture (2016). Jilani received the Amnesty International Genetta Sagan Award for Women’s Rights (2000), and the Millennium Peace Prize for Women (2001). She is a member of The Elders, an independent group of global leaders working together for peace and human rights, founded by Nelson Mandela. Below are edited excerpts from an interview with Ayesha Khan held at Jilani’s home in Lahore on 23 October 2015.

Cobalt substituted nickel zinc ferrite nanoparticles ( Ni 0.65–x Co x Zn 0.35 Fe 2.0 O 4) X varying from 0.0 to 0.65 in steps of 0.15 have been produced using sol–gel method, with PVA as chelating agent. The phase formation of the sintered ferrite was confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies. The lattice parameter a(A°) has been calculated using Nelson–Riley method. The crystallite size has been estimated by the Williamson–Hall method using the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the line broadening of all the peaks. Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS) of the samples showed the clear presence of two sextets and distribution of iron over the two sites has been given. Increase in saturation magnetization with cobalt concentration with a slight decrease for x = 0.15 has been observed with the vibrating sample magnetometry study. The observed value of magnetization for Ni0.65Zn0.35Fe2O4 with a particle size of 43.5 nm has been 71 emu/gm at room temperature, which is higher than that reported for samples prepared using chemical methods of the same composition. The results have been explained on the basis of the particle size and cation distribution among various sites.

This study examines and evaluates changes in the soundness of Korean stock prices by classifying the financial and global financial crises after the 1990s, when the capital market was first opened. The criteria for judging soundness include whether stock prices are determined by long-term equilibrium variables, whether there is a trend among non-long-term equilibrium variables, and whether long-term equilibrium variables of overseas stocks are identified during the Korean stock price determination process. Further, a co-integration test is performed using the VAR model which comprises the stock prices from Korea and the United States, and their long-term economic equilibrium variables. Furthermore, a transformation error correction model with a VAR type consisting of differences and cointegration errors in Korean stock prices is derived. Accordingly, the trend of long-term equilibrium variables is estimated using the Beveridge-Nelson decomposition of Korean stock prices. Furthermore, a test for its presence is performed. According to the empirical analysis conducted using monthly Korean data; the influence of the long-term equilibrium variable trend in the Korean economy tends to increase the stock prices following a financial crisis.

Background/Purpose: Tuberculosis (T.B) an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis is still one of the biggest killers among the infectious diseases. Immunological deficiencies of various magnitudes have been reported in TB which include CD4 + T and CD8 + T cells. The aim of the study was investigating the at the occurrence of CD4+ T cell lymphopenia in patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis and the response of this abnormality to ATT in HIV negative patients. Methods: The study subjects included three groups in which 30 patients were with sputum positive pulmonary tuberculosis without any evidence of HIV infection and second group of10 healthy controls. Third group included10 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis co-infected HIV sero-positivity. Zeil Nelson (ZN) method was used to diagnose pulmonary tuberculosis, ELISA method was adopted to confirm the HIV status and CD4 and CD8 count was done by flow cytometry. Results: The CD4 + T cell lymphopenia was observed significantly associated (p=0.000) in Non-HIV pulmonary tuberculosis cases as compared to controls (370.87 ± 209.00 cells/μl v/s 673.60 ± 120.30 cells/μl).CD4 + T cell lymphopenia was significantin HIV positive pulmonary TB patients compared to healthy controls (p=0.000). CD4 + T cell lymphopenia was more severe in HIV co-infected pulmonary tuberculosis patients compared to Non-HIV pulmonary TB cases (p=0.029). Conclusion: We conclude that the pulmonary tuberculosis is an important cause of non HIV CD4, CD8 lymphopenia, with reversal of CD4/CD8 ratio, and this is reversible with effective treatment with antitubercular therapy (ATT).

Limber pine dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium cyanocarpum (A. Nelson ex Rydberg) Coulter & Nelson; Viscaceae) severely parasitizes limber pine (Pinus flexilis James) and several other white pines, including western white pine (P. monticola Dougl. ex D. Don) and whitebark pine (P. albicaulis Engelm.), over an extensive geographic range in the western United States (1). However, limber pine dwarf mistletoe has not been previously reported on sugar pine (P. lambertiana Dougl.), another white pine found within the range of limber pine dwarf mistletoe (1). In August 2009, we found a sugar pine infected with limber pine dwarf mistletoe approximately 0.8 km northeast of Tahquitz Peak in the San Jacinto Mountains, California (33°45′24′′N, 116°40′24′′W; elevation 2,640 m). The infected sugar pine was 13 inches (33 cm) in diameter and had 13 infections on five of its lower branches. Ten of the infections were producing mature male and female mistletoe plants with open flowers or developing fruits, respectively. Two of the infected branches were forming witches' brooms in response to infection by limber pine dwarf mistletoe. The infected sugar pine was growing within 3 m of four limber pines severely infected with limber pine dwarf mistletoe. The male and female plants produced on the infected sugar pine were morphologically identical to those growing on the infected limber pines. Limber pine dwarf mistletoe can be distinguished from sugar pine dwarf mistletoe (A. californicum Hawksw. & Wiens), the principal dwarf mistletoe parasitizing sugar pine in California, by its smaller plants (mean height 3 cm versus 8 cm) and flowering period (August to September versus June to July). In an attempt to determine the relative susceptibility of sugar pine to limber pine dwarf mistletoe, we conducted a survey of the infested limber pine stand. Because there were no additional sugar pines growing in the area, it was impossible to assess the general susceptibility of sugar pine to limber pine dwarf mistletoe, but the production of many mature plants from 10 of the infections on the sugar pine suggests this tree species may be highly susceptible. However, this is currently the only known location where sugar pine co-occurs with limber pine dwarf mistletoe (1), so assessing the susceptibility of sugar pine to this dwarf mistletoe will depend on locating additional sites where they co-occur. It should be noted also that previous surveys in the San Jacinto Mountains failed to detect infection by limber pine dwarf mistletoe on sugar pine (1). Specimens of limber pine dwarf mistletoe on sugar pine were collected and deposited at the Deaver Herbarium (ASC), Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff (Accession No. 92697). Under the guidance of NELSON NAINGGOLAN as main supervisor and TOHAP MANURUNG as a co-supervisor.The purpose of this study is to determine the vector autoregressive (VAR) model of the prices of clove, copra and nutmeg commodities in North Sulawesi. The data used are data on monthly prices of cloves, copra and nutmeg for the period of January 2015 to March 2019. Parameter estimation results for clove prices are estimated parameter values of 0,174; 0,260; 0,151 while for the copra price, the estimated value of the parameter is 0,060; 0,004; 0,002; and for nutmeg prices the parameter value of 0,215 is obtained; 0,105; 0,625. Prediction results for April, May and June 2019, namely in April 2019 the price of cloves was Rp90.882, the price of copra was Rp4.461, and the price of nutmeg was Rp70.316. The prediction results in May 2019 of clove prices amounted to Rp90.231, copra prices amounted to Rp4.411, and nutmeg prices were Rp70.021. For over two decades no attempt has been made to update the checklist of Ferns and Lycophytes (hereafter only referred to as pteridophytes) of Honduras. In 1996 Nelson-Sutherland and co-workers published the first fully annotated checklist for the country, which included 651 named species (680 taxa including varieties and hybrids). However, phylogenetic relationships have changed substantially since then. There have also been many taxonomic revisions for several groups and a considerable number of new records have since been published. Our work aimed to provide a comprehensive updated and fully annotated checklist of Honduran ferns. We undertook a comprehensive literature review of new records for Honduras and verified each individual record for the country. We followed PPGI for our taxonomic species revisions. We excluded a total of 81 taxa from the original 1996 checklist due to synonymy or lack of evidence of the species occurrence in Honduras. A total of 114 new species records were added, including four previously unpublished records. Our new updated checklist includes 713 taxa (including 8 varieties and 7 hybrids) which represents a 19% increase to the number of pteridophytes known from Honduras. Our work provides updated information regarding the pteridophytes diversity of Honduras. These data provide a crucial first step towards the first Honduran pteridophytes flora.

Introduction: This work examines the causes of the crisis and the fall of one of the most successful British merchant-bankers, Abraham Gibbs who by 1816 had made Sicily the centre of his financial world. It considers Gibbs' role in British political interests in the Mediterranean, as he financed the affairs of the British government there through Lord Bentinck, Nelson, Hamilton and Leckie. Aim of the work: The authors evaluate whether the Gibbs crisis was caused solely by poor management, and poor business aptitude or by other factors. The relationships Gibbs had with other merchant and bankers like Benjamin Ingham, Falconnet, Barings and Meuricoffre in London, Sicily and Malta are analysed. Methodological approach: The study is based upon the investigation of primary and secondary sources and uses archival material in Sicily and the UK to interpretate the Gibbs crisis. The authors explore the structure and efficiency of Gibbs' accounting and administrative practice from an interpretative stance, comparing Gibbs administrative practice with Benjamin Ingham's ones. By using the Ingham Whitaker archive in Marsala, we attempt to reconstruct and prove Gibbs level of accounting management in the context of the British community's business practices in Sicily. Main findings: in Gibbs' case more accurate and more reliable accounting pro- cedures, to internally check fraudulent activities, would have been the only real means of protection to safeguard business integrity. Originality: the work offers original information to improve knowledge on a specific and interesting period of the history of both Britain and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and the interaction between British and Sicilian economies.

Towards the goal of decarbonizing electrification, concerns remain over the sustainability of the requisite Li and Co, as well as the stringent transportation limits on the amount and operational state of Li allowed in airfreight. Rechargeable zinc-based batteries using aqueous electrolyte offer a compelling alternative to lithium-based batteries with the added benefit of a two-electron anode that augments the energy density, helping to compensate for lower cell voltage inherent to aqueous electrolytes. To solve the standing caveat with rechargeable zinc-based batteries — that they form separator-piercing dendrites — we built on our understanding of the importance of 3D co-continuous wiring of electrons, ion, and molecules in energy-storing nanoarchitectures. Sponge form factors fabricated by fusing ~50 µm zinc particles into a monolithic pore–solid architecture physically prevents formation of dendrites even at high charging current density [1,2]. Throughout the story of the NRL Zn sponge anode, each successive generation of the electrode has been fabricated with manufacturability as a foremost consideration, such that the current sponge formulation (Gen 5) is processed quickly, at scale, to sizes necessary for decarbonizing electrification. I will present the performance of these “big and strong” zinc sponges versus a variety of cathodes and the potential paths forward for the development and transition of this safer energy-storage technology.
