Abstract Contemporary scientific terminology is populated by thousands of eponyms, technical terms derived from the names of discoverers and inventors. Since the ultimate goals of scientific language are precision and objectivity, the ever increasing use of eponyms is puzzling. Eponyms betray the inherent contradiction between the supposed neutrality and anonymity of scientific discourse and individual vindication. The systematic use of eponyms has resulted in one of the most effective reward systems in Western science. Moreover, it is interesting to note that eponyms do not represent a recent form of recognition; their genealogy can be traced back to classical antiquity, in particular to the Hellenistic era and as a feature of the scientific lexicon they have undergone surprisingly little change over more than two millennia. In my essay I explore the genealogy of scientific eponyms and their cultural background and I shall focus my attention on classical and early modern science. During classical antiquity the use of eponyms served an important dual purpose, on the one hand paying tribute to those individuals who, by dint of their discoveries and written works, gained eminence in a specific field of enquiry, and on the other hand helping to map the historical geography of a discipline and thus establish its boundaries as well as its future prospects. During the Renaissance, with the rediscovery of the classics and the reaffirmation of the cultural value of science and technology, the coining of eponyms gained unprecedented momentum and proliferated in most disciplines.

It has become a commonplace to say that, in classical Greek and Roman religion, to know the name of a god was to have power over him. The idea was rejected by Martin Nilsson, but he did not argue the point at any great length and a more detailed discussion may be of use. In this paper, I shall examine those contexts where it might be maintained that gods' names possessed some kind of intrinsic power but I shall conclude that the phenomenon is marginal and not universally true of Greek religion as a whole. To do this, we shall have to consider the whole question of how far the Greeks were worried about divine names and what the motives for this may have been. Evidence derived from prayers is of particular importance in this.

Annotation:
Background: Practice of Ayurveda nomenclature (Nāmākaranam) of dravyas (Medicinal Plants) in Ayurveda traces back to the Vedic periods which is supposed to be 5000 B.C. In Vedas, plants were named after mythological belief, structure of plant’s part resembling with part of birds and animals, or rituals uses, uddabhava sthana (Habitat), svarūpa (morphological characters), karma (Pharmacological action), etc. It got scientific basis in samhitas period and named more than thousand dravyas by close observation of morphological characters, habit and habitat, and therapeutic uses. However, it states that basis of Nāmākaranam of dravyas was elaborated in Nighantus and enriched with more terminologies, and hence it is known as parayāyas (synonyms). Recently, Bentham & Hooker’s binomial nomenclature has been practiced in Ayurveda so that uniformity of Dravyas names can be maintained and accepted worldwide. Aim and objective: The main objective of this review is to explore methodology of Nāmākaranam in Vedas, samhitas and Nighantus and its relationship with binomial nomenclature. Material and method: Ayurvedic literatures and surfing web was main sources of gathering information related to names of plants. Results: Nāmākaranam of plants was found to be based on scientific evidences that describe morphological features, habit and habitat, therapeutic indications, and physical and chemical properties, doctrine of signature, source of raw materials for industries or home made products, etc. For instance, the name catuḥsira for asthisamharī coined in śabdacandrikā suggests its quadrangular stem on which the Latin name Cissus quadrangularis Linn. has been accepted. Some more names can be suggested like Bahusutā (Asparagus racemosa Linn.), Raktāngi (Rubia cordifolia), Sthirasāra (Tectona grandis), Gudatvak (Cinnamomum tamala), Visākha (Boerhaavia diffusa), etc. On the basis of above examples, it can be revealed that binomial nomenclature is improved ones of Ayurveda nomenclature for its acceptance worldwide. Conclusion: Names of plants mentioned in Vedas and Samhitas; and parayāyas in Nighantus are based on its udabhava, svarūpa, karma, sādharma, ruḍhī, svabhāva, lokopayoga, etc. Which are also considered by Bentham & Hooker’s binomial nomenclature to coin scientific name of plant species.

The subject of the study is the producing motivational bases of nominees in the Chinese and Russian languages. The object of the study is naming in two cultures. The author examines in detail such aspects of the topic as the theory of nomination and its unique features in relation to Chinese and Russian linguistic cultures; the concept of naming and the process of creating onyms in two languages under the influence of historical background. Particular attention is paid to the Chinese tone, which influences the creation of ononyms, as well as a comparative study of onoms in the Chinese and Russian languages. The study was based on provisions formulated by linguists who study issues related to naming and nomination theory: Y.Y. Huang, A.K.K. Chan, V. Mathesius and others. Research methods: systematization and generalization, etymological analysis, conceptual analysis, linguocultural analysis. The main conclusions of the study are the provisions formulated based on the results of the comparative analysis: in Chinese culture, names are chosen to convey certain meanings and connotations. Chinese proper names often consist of two or three characters, with the surname coming first. Surnames are usually passed down through generations and carry with them a deep sense of tradition and origin. Names are often chosen to reflect virtues or values that parents hope to embody in their child. Names can also be chosen based on elements of Chinese astrology, such as the five elements and 12 animal signs. In Russian culture, names also have important meaning and are chosen based on many factors. They usually consist of a first name, a patronymic (derived from the father's name) and a last name. Surnames are usually inherited and reflect the ethnic or regional origin of the family. Names may be chosen based on religious significance, family traditions, or popular trends. The author’s special contribution to the study of the topic is that the article summarizes the main similarities and differences in Russian and Chinese naming. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time, based on etymological analysis, it established the relevant features of naming in the Chinese and Russian languages, which are also presented in a comparative aspect.

This paper explores narratology with a focus on metaphorical and physical voice in Don DeLillo’s 1982 novel, The Names. Beginning with an overview of previous criticism on the novel and an exploration of its post-modern qualities, I progress into a discussion of meaning, and how it can be found in the narratological voice. The concepts of semantic and vocal form of meaning are taken into consideration. Moreover, it is demonstrated how language in The Names is both representational and experiential.Analysing the novel both in print and in audiobook format, I study voice from the perspective of post-classical narratology. With the use of audionarratological theory, I illustrate how voice in The Names is transformed into an explicit and amplified presence when encountered in its audiobook form. In this context, ideological characteristics of the voice are explored, and I look at how they are semiotically communicated. Finally, since criticism of post-modern fiction usually focuses on representational and metafictional qualities of language, this paper advocates for future research on the experiential qualities of language and asks for this mindset to be applied when analysing post-modern fiction. It is illustrated how the experience of listening to an audiobook version can add to the interpretation of a printed work.

This Bachelor’s thesis examines the use of ancient bronze statues in the 2017 film Call me by your name by director Luca Guadagnino. Various scenes which feature ancient statues are examined individually using semiotic analysis. The scenes are examined individually, first described on a denotative level, then analyzed on a connotative level. The theoretical stand point is based on the studies of art works in film. Key theoretical concepts used are ”in between-ness” which is a state in which change in narrative is made possible through looking at art, and ”parallels”, a means of which to make art represent the characters in the film. The thesis finds the sculptures in Call me by your name to play a part in affecting the narrative of the film, mainly in regard to the love story between the two lead characters, two men named Elio and Oliver. The acts of looking, examining, and touching the statues in this film help the narrative turn in favor of the lead characters romantic relationship. The thesis argues that the nude bronze sculptures of men from ancient Greece are used in this film as signifiers of desire, timelessness and homoerotic lust.

Annotation:
In recent years, some European directors are taking particularly bold initiatives in their adaptations of classic texts, cutting the text, changing the order of monologues and even injecting pieces of texts written by them or from other literary works. They do not hesitate to "stage themselves", that is to say, to treat primarily their own existential questions through the classic texts, thus releasing any pressure exerted on them by the authoritative textual interpretations or by the representations of these texts in the collective imagination, and taking the classic texts in a very personal "elsewhere". Their stagings exceed the fragmentation and disorder specific to postmodern theater and focus instead on telling a coherent story, centered on the intimate concerns of the director. This new type of staging draws on diverse influences from André Antoine to Heiner Müller through Stanislavski, Brecht and Artaud, and represents a new stage in the empowerment process of the art of staging at work since the nineteenth century. The corpus of this thesis includes four recent adaptations (conducted between 2008 and 2011) of classic texts: Thomas Ostermeier’s Hamlet, Nikolai Kolyada’s Hamlet, Olivier Py’s Romeo and Juliet, and Krzysztof Warlikowski’s A Streetcar (from A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams). It also includes a practical application in the form of an adaptation, Pygmalion - I Created A Woman (from Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw), directed by the author of the thesis in 2014 in the Turkish State Theatres and having tested the arguments and conclusions from previous analyzes

„Building the sacred: A study of proper names of monuments and structures in Classic Maya inscriptions“. Tulane University, 2007.

Den vollen Inhalt der Quelle finden
Annotation:
The Classic Maya lords utilized many strategies to obtain and maintain control of their domains, but only a few left traces that can be studied by archaeologists. One such strategy was the erection of monuments and the construction of buildings within city centers. These monuments and structures were vital aspects of the Classic Maya landscape and in a sense were 'living' entities. They were given proper names by their creators, which were intended to reflect the nature of the monument or structure. For monuments this often meant that their names described whom they embodied or what ritual function they fulfilled. For structures the names provide insight into their intended political, social, or religious function The dissertation provides a systematic study of proper names of monuments and structures constructed by the Classic Maya. Using the known body of hieroglyphic texts and archaeological data, it examines the relationship between text and landscape for the Classic Maya. Based on this information, several patterns were identified: for example, the naming of monuments was a circumscribed phenomenon limited to the sites of Copan and Quirigua, and the choice of subject matter for these sculptures was driven by the political and religious atmosphere at the time of their carving. As an artistic convention and as a tool for political propaganda, the use of names on portrait stelae shows a clear development over time, culminating in the Late Classic In contrast to named monuments, named structures are found all over the Maya area. Although names from several sites are discussed in this dissertation, data from Palenque provides a 'case study' for understanding the relationship between structure names, structure iconography, and history. In the course of the study, I have reevaluated previous interpretations of Palenque structure names and suggested several new or modified interpretations Proper names of monuments and structures provide important information about Maya history, politics, religion, and the landscape. This study provides a new look at this dynamic and productive phenomenon in order to better understand how and why the Maya constructed and modified their landscape

AbstractThroughout this book, we have emphasized different ways in which questions are relevant in logic. We saw that questions can be seen as names for types of information, and that by generalizing logic to questions we can capture logical relations holding between information types. We also saw that in the inquisitive setting, a more general account of certain logical operators emerges, which boils down to the classical one in the special case of statements, but which also covers the role of these operators in questions. Furthermore, we saw that questions may be used in inferences as placeholders for arbitrary information of a certain type, and that by reasoning with questions we can build formal proofs of the existence of certain logical dependencies (and of certain logical relations of answerhood and presupposition).

Classical Turkish literature is a literary tradition of approximately six centuries, within the general development of Turkish literature, whose theoretical and aesthetic principles were formed within the circle of Islamic civilization and shaped especially by the influence of Arabic and Persian literature. Classical Turkish literature, which is based on religious, historical, mythological and folklore foundations, also serves as a historical source with the "human" element it contains. Its’ statesmen, scholars, philosophers, poets, religious and sufi elders, legendary heroes and similar figures who left their mark on the culture and history of the society in which they lived are the most important sources of Classical Turkish Literature. Starting from this point, in this study, the names of the individuals mentioned in the Divan of Babur, one of the most important works of Chagatai Turkish, were examined and it was aimed at revealing the influence of the individuals within Babur's poetry world.

The local development from simple impact to complex contact systems including all possible contact details will be subject of the paper, considering also the necessary mathematical evolution from classical multibody system theory with bilateral constraints and single-valued forces to non-smooth multibody system theory with unilateral constraints and set-valued forces. This paper considers the problem of querying dirty databases, which may contain both erroneous facts and multiple names for the same entity. While both of these data quality issues have been widely studied in isolation, our contribution is a holistic framework for jointly deduplicating and repairing data. Our REPLACE framework follows a declarative approach, utilizing logical rules to specify under which conditions a pair of entity references can or must be merged and logical constraints to specify consistency requirements. The semantics defines a space of solutions, each consisting of a set of merges to perform and a set of facts to delete, which can be further refined by applying optimality criteria. As there may be multiple optimal solutions, we use classical notions of possible and certain query answers to reason over the alternative solutions, and introduce a novel notion of most informative answer to obtain a more compact presentation of query results. We perform a detailed analysis of the data complexity of the central reasoning tasks of recognizing optimal solutions and (most informative) possible and certain answers, for each of the three notions of optimal solution and for both general and restricted specifications.

In contemporary laws on criminal procedure in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as in the region, the penetration of elements of Anglo-Saxon law and the uncritical acceptance of the "fruit of the poisonous tree" rule in the matter of evidentiary law are visible. The look into the future is nevertheless based on the historical development of the final stage of judicial fact-finding, where it is noticeable that the inquisitorial procedure of post-classical Roman law was transferred to ecclesiastical, canon law, which greatly influenced the development of evidentiary law in continental law. Therefore, the question arises, what is the hierarchy of the value of evidence in the Roman procedure and in the later Middle Ages, when the church itself forbids priests from participating in the most widespread forms of the so-called. "God's judgments" or ordals (Lateran council from 1215). The paper analyzes the contrasts between the free evaluation of evidence and the system of legally binding or formal evaluation of evidence of the inquisition procedure, whereby the church tried to evaluate evidence for the conversion of sinners by developing the spirit of mercy, pity and compassion. Likewise, with St. Thomas Aquinas, sins bear the names of delicts of Roman law (furtum, seditio, homicidium...), while the inquisitorial process, as a judicially organized investigation, dominating the continental legal culture and jurisprudence until the middle of the 18th century, brings legal rules for the evaluation of evidence.

In this paper, we aim to understand some of the mechanisms behind the low impact of a Chilean educational reform on socioeconomic integration within the school system. We focus on pre-kindergarden (pre-K) admissions, which account for the highest volume of applications since all students (except those applying to private schools) must seek admission through the centralized system. We employ a discrete choice model to analyze parents school preferences. Our analysis reveals that the school choices of low-SES families are more strongly influenced by a schools non-academic attributes which are often omitted from analyses of parental preferences due to data availability constraints rather than academic quality. For instance, low-SES parents tend to prefer schools with fewer reported violent incidents, schools where students report facing less discrimination and exclusion, and schools where students demonstrate higher levels of self-efficacy. Disadvantaged families also tend to favor schools that have a religious affiliation, offer more ”classical” sports (e.g. soccer), or have a foreign name. These results have significant implications for understanding the preferences of disadvantaged families and the impact of centralized admission systems on reducing segregation. By recognizing the non-academic factors driving school choices, policymakers can better design admission systems that truly foster school diversity and equality.
