Der volle Inhalt der QuelleWith the heightened profile of language learning in a global community, language education is exploring a new model of intercultural language learning. The goal of intercultural language learning is to produce language users equipped with explicit skills in understanding connections and differences between their own culture and the culture of the target language. The research literature suggests that language learners’ resulting intercultural competence will encompass a range of characteristics. There have been few empirical studies, however, to provide illustration of intercultural competence, in order to assist teachers’ understanding of desired outcomes and student development. This case study investigates the characteristics of intercultural competence in young language learners in one Australian primary school. The learners have been engaged in an immersion language program for up to eight years, in one of three languages: French, German or Japanese. The study also investigates the behaviours and understandings in their language teachers which may facilitate the development of learners’ intercultural competence. It explores in summary what may be the nature of intercultural competence in the case study language learners. The study is relevant to research of both intercultural language learning and of immersion language classrooms. Using a case study design, the study incorporates qualitative data in the form of student focus group interviews, teacher interviews, and classroom observations. Data were collected at the case study school, in Sydney, Australia, over a school semester, and involved 49 Year 6 students and four teachers. Results of the study suggest a number of indicators of the case study students’ development in intercultural competence – that is, through understanding of language culture and identity. The student is and sees him or herself as a purposeful interactive communicator. The student understands the target language itself to be the vehicle of the target culture, and often displays metalinguistic curiosity and skills. Some students are able to critically reflect on their (multiple) linguistic and cultural memberships, and to negotiate their identity as a non-native language user. The study found that teachers provide a model of interculturality to their students. The teachers’ interculturality is enacted in their relationships and pedagogical choices, in their design of experiential learning tasks, and their facilitation of linguistic and cultural connections for their students. The study also found that the nature of the immersion language classroom itself facilitates intercultural competence in students. The study provides a case study illustration of intercultural competence in language learners which is relevant to research in intercultural language learning, immersion pedagogy and the emerging related pedagogy of content-based language learning.

Intercultural exchanges are not a recent phenomenon but have been intensified in the post-colonial times, with displacements and migrations, launching new challenges for human beings. Large social and cultural differences are put into contact and exposed to strained coexistence. Driven by my own history as a Portuguese in traffic Brazil-Portugal, I investigate the creation in dance driven by exchanges and displacements (of subjects, ideas, information, images, objects, etc.), through a creative solo process that took as its starting point the relationship built with the cultural environment in Salvador (Bahia), and other creative experiments conducted with performers and the general public, on both sides of the ocean. This study reaffirms a vision of dance as movement-thought-world approach and dialogues with a multidimensional perspective of the in-between space, featuring it as an interval, relational state, as space/ experience the difference, as a hybrid or exotopic (BAKHTIN, 2003) condition, and as a possible field of mobilization of identities/ alterities. Based on methodological approach of Practice as Research (PaR) (BARRETT&BOLT, 2007; CANDY, 2006), it discusses how in-between experiences-lived in first person or caused in other(s) - interfere with creations, reciprocal images and cultural relations between Brazil and Portugal, countries which have maintained links based on colonialism in the past. The argument put forward is that creative processes interested in cultural exchanges have the potential to access and call different in-betweenesses, and therefore mobilize identities and alterities. On a wider scale, this research has argued that the creative processes in dance, in the context of immersive intercultural experiences, have great potencial to change the relationship of artists with themselves, with each other and with the world around, thus suggesting an interweaving of creative/ intercultural/ interpersonal processes. The study of these dynamics highlights the role of dance as a practice of social transformation, as an important key in the new forms of coexistence that we need to discover nowadays.

The broader objective of this study undertaking can briefly be articulated in particulate aims as follows: to measure the attitudes of consumers regarding the brand displayed by this strategy as well as to highlight recall, recognition and purchase intentions generated by product placement on consumers. In addition, check the differences and similarities between the behavior of Brazilian and American consumers caused by the influence of product placements. The study was undertaken targeting consumer audience in Brazil and the U.S. A rang3 modeling set ups were performed in order to realign study instruments and hypothesis towards the research objectives. This study gave focus on the following hypothesized models. H1: Consumers / Participants who viewed the brands / products in the movie have a higher brand / product recall compared to the consumers / participants who did not view the brands / products in the movie. H2: US Consumers / Participants are able to recognize and recall brands / products which appear in the background of the movie than Brazil. H3: Consumers / participants from USA are more accepting of product placements compared to their counterparts in Brazil. H4: There are discernible similarities in consumer / participant brand attitudes and purchase intentions in consumers / participants from USA and Brazil in spite of the fact that their country of origin is different. Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient ensured the reliability of survey instruments. The study involved the use of the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) for the hypothesis testing. This study used the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to assess both the convergent and discriminant validities instead of using the Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) or the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). This reinforced for the use of the regression Chi Square and T statistical tests in further. Only hypothesis H3 was rejected, the rest were not. T test provided insight findings on specific subgroup significant differences. In the SEM testing, the error variance for product placement attitudes was negative for both the groups. On this The Heywood Case came in handy to fix negative values. The researcher used both quantitative and qualitative approach where closed ended questionnaires and interviews respectively were used to collect primary data. The results were additionally provided with tabulations. It can be concluded that, product placement varies markedly in the U.S. from Brazil based on the influence a range of factors provided in the study. However, there are elements of convergence probably driven by the convergence in technology. In order, product placement to become more competitive in the promotional marketing, there will be the need for researchers to extend focus from the traditional variables and add knowledge on the conventional marketplace factors that is the sell-ability of the product placement technologies and strategies.

This thesis is concerned about how well-educated Taiwanese American women practice their motherhood in America, and discuss the cultural meanings and gender role behind the way they hold their parenting attitude after they immigrant to America. First of all, review relative literature about Taiwanese women''s view on the dilemma between taking care their family and developing their own career life. Try to figure out what kind of their concept about "being mother". Secondly, understand how Taiwanese immigrants deal with their marginal status in a new environment and how they value this process. Finally, try to figure out when these well-educated Taiwanese women with the native cultural concept of motherhood fit themselves into the different country, how they find their female-self under double cultural and gender marginal status. Therefore, the thesis use in-depth interviews and try to answer the following questions : (1) When the interviewees take the concept of motherhood from native culture to fit into the new environment, are they able to make a better choice to overcome the double marginal status by their well-educated background ? (2) With self-reflection by dual cultural shock, are Taiwanese women able to release the constrain from the concept constructed by the native culture ? (3) Will it be helpful for Taiwanese women to take care of their American born children ? Can they overcome the marginal status in the host country by these parenting attitudes ?

The study uses the concept of cultural musical code, which is taken from the theory of musical code posed by the composer, Claudia Gorbman, to verify the cinematic musical codes from the appropriated music in the film Chunking Express. In the study, it discusses the cultural meaning, narrative and the meaning of lyrics of the appropriated music in Chunking Express: 〈California Dreaming〉, 〈Things in Life〉, 〈What a Difference a Day Made〉 and 〈Dreamer〉. In the film, the appropriated music is used to shape the impression of the characters, to reflect the cultural meaning in the images and the atmosphere of lyrics. As the main part of the narrative in the film, the appropriated music has satisfied ‘cultural musical code’ and properly combined with the images in the film. This combination is the so-called ‘cinematic musical codes’ in the theory of ‘musical code.’ The study is expected to provide composers and audiences in Taiwan with a reference which can both introduce and emphasize the narrative and cultural meaning that appropriated music used in films represents.
