Muhammadiyah was frequently being similarized with who denied tradition and NU was not. Though one tries to coerce, it will be merely culture movement without tradition. This article desires to look further the soft contestation which is occurred between Muhammadiyah and NU’s movement within Masjid Jendral Sudirman (MJS). MJS is one of mosque in Yogyakarta whose Muhammadiyah affiliation, yet almost all activities therein use NU’s peculiarities. Boards (takmir) enliven the mosque were coming from NU since 2008 and so that it is decently plausible. I’m interesting to investigate what actually happened beyond the board’s movement in instilling NU’s particularities upon Muhammadiyah’s mosque: is it insurgency, coup d’etat, or a new mode of hybrid, and why it can be occurred. The article thus argues that the pattern of NU’s board movement in MJS is merely mass movement which emerges unconsciously as an effect of unawareness shift, borrowing Selo Soemardjan’s phrase. The shift which is entangled society change in postindustrial, internet milieu. Keywords: Masjid Jendral Sudirman (MJS), Muhammadiyah and NU, Mass movement, unconscious shift, postindustrial society.

This study examines the emergence of indigenous movements as powerful new social and political actors in Latin America. Bolivia’s indigenous movement, in particular, stands out for its mobilizational and organizational capacity in uniting diverse sectors of civil society in the struggle against neoliberalism. The study explores the evolution of indigenous movement strategies in Bolivia, beginning from the transition to democracy in the early 1980s until the presidential victory of indigenous leader Evo Morales of the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) party in late 2005. Special attention is paid to the rise of contemporary indigenous-based parties rooted in established social movement organizations as well as the role of the indigenous movement in the Bolivian ‘Water War’ of 2000 and the ‘Gas War’ of 2003. The study contends that the success of Bolivia’s contemporary indigenous movement is largely the result of its two-pronged strategy based on unwavering opposition in both the streets and in parliament and its capacity to combine competing class- and ethnic- based demands.

Abstract: The Lambrakis Youth Movement in early 1960s Greece, although grounded in the nation’s post-Civil War political and social framework and oriented toward the future—trying to create a society of freedom, national independence, and social justice—nevertheless made memory and memory work an important aspect of its activism. More specifically, the Youth Movement cultivated a new memory and historical culture, and it was only through this process that the imagining of an alternative political and social future became possible. Memory is important not only for its symbolic content but for its relationship to the emergence of new identities.

Abstract In May 1945, shortly after the Liberation of the Netherlands, Dutch Reformed minister Willem Banning (1888-1971) published a sketch of a ‘personalistic socialism’. Shortly thereafter, he became one of the founding fathers of the renewed Dutch Labor Party. At the first convention of the new party he proposed that the process of renewal of socialism had to be informed by ‘spiritual values’. In Dutch historiography, the role of Banning as one of the founders of the Dutch Labor Party was never really been understood as religiously or even ideologically motivated. The so-called ‘Breakthrough-movement’ ‐ which sought a new synthesis between political action and religious or ideological inspiration ‐ has been generally interpreted in terms of opportunism: in order to persuade Catholic and Protestant workers to vote for the Labor Party, some spiritually and morally loaded vocabulary was added and the harsh anti-religious affiliation of classic socialist politics was (temporarily) toned down. In this article, I propose a new analysis of the breakthrough-movement, inspired by new studies on public debate in the Netherlands and in Europe between 1918 and 1960 and by an in-depth analysis of the intellectual development of Banning. This leads to the conclusion that the spiritual and religious sources of inspiration of the breakthrough movement should be seen as a turning point in the Dutch debate on the essence of humankind and his/her role in society, church and politics in a period still problematically labelled by the metaphor of ‘pillarization’.

ABSTRACT: This article analyzes the demonstrations taking place on December 13 each year in Burkina Faso to commemorate the 1998 assassination of Journalist Norbert Zongo and three of his companions. At the time, the mobilization following the assassination transformed into a movement entitled “truth and justice” which played a major role for the Burkinabe leftist movement, despite attempts to cover up the affair by the regime of President Blaise Compaoré. Over the years, 13 December has become an alternative holiday to the national independence day of 11 December. After the 2014 insurrection that ended the reign of Compaoré, the fight against impunity developed a new dynamic by merging with movements fighting for broader socio-political changes. The author conducted participant observation of commemorations and manifestations that offers an analysis that aims to understand the reconfiguration of the Burkinabe leftist movements in Ouagadougou since 2014. The commemoration of Norbert Zongo reveals significant divisions within the left, between the old revolutionaries (“the reds”) and the young people from civil society (“the insurgents”), even if, in recent years, a convergence has formed against imperialism in general, and more particularly against French politics.

To predict the electoral fate of the new cohort of indigenous-based political parties in Latin America, and the impacts on their respective party systems, we need to understand their prospects for consolidation. The central task of this article is to determine whether indigenous peoples’ parties are developing solid party roots in society or if they are merely benefiting from a protest vote against the system. The study of political party consolidation requires an examination of local level successes and failures. Based on a quantitative analysis of municipal election results in Ecuador (1996—2004) and Bolivia (1999—2004), the author finds mixed support for indigenous party consolidation. Clearly, the governing indigenous-based Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) party in Bolivia has solidified its base of support. Ecuador’s indigenous-based Pachakutik (MUPP) party, however, has lost its support at the national level, though it continues to make impressive gains at the local level. As such, it represents a case of incomplete consolidation.

Science and technology are the two wheels of a progressive society. While the research in basic science brings the growth of technology, the developments in technology add input to the diverse fields of science. Basic science is the source of technology. But it is a sorry state of affair that at present the interest in basic science courses such as physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology is dwindling the students. If the trend continues, it will hamper the growth of the nation in all spheres, including the technological front too. The paper tries to highlight the different reasons for this trend and the future implications. Recently the United Nations announced that the year 2005 will be celebrated as the 'International Year of Physics' to remember the great discoveries made by Albert Einstein in the year 1905. It was hundred years ago, in 1905, that he published three historic papers in Annalender Physik which brought out a revolution and a new dimension to Physics in particular and Science in general. Also the year 2005 will be celebrated as the golden year of the discovery od DNA structure by Watson and Crick in 1955. Such celebrations should be a mass movement. The struggle and joy of the great discoveries by great minds should reach to the young minds. This will kindle the interest in them towards Basic Science courses. In the long run the nation will be benefited. It is now the time for responsible men-teachers,parents,educationists,technocrats,media persons and the people in the helm of affairs to discuss the situation prevailing in the field of higher education of basic Science and look for the meaningful solution. The paper also elaborates the in-depth programme conducted by Vivekananda College, Puttur, for the past fifteen years, creating interest among the students of rural schools of the region towards Science.

Background and ObjectivesThe genetic basis of Parkinson disease (PD) motor progression is largely unknown. Previous studies of the genetics of PD progression have included small cohorts and shown a limited overlap with genetic PD risk factors from case-control studies. Here, we have studied genomic variation associated with PD motor severity and early-stage progression in large longitudinal cohorts to help to define the biology of PD progression and potential new drug targets.MethodsWe performed a GWAS meta-analysis of early PD motor severity and progression up to 3 years from study entry. We used linear mixed-effect models with additive effects, corrected for age at diagnosis, sex, and the first 5 genetic principal components to assess variability in axial, limb, and total Movement Disorder Society–Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) III scores.ResultsWe included 3,572 unrelated European ancestry patients with PD from 5 observational cohorts and 1 drug trial. The average AAO was 62.6 years (SD = 9.83), and 63% of participants were male. We found an average increase in the total MDS-UPDRS III score of 2.3 points/year. We identified an association between PD axial motor progression and variation at theGJA5locus at 1q12 (β = −0.25, SE = 0.04,p= 3.4e−10). Exploration of the regulation of gene expression in the region (cis-expression quantitative trait loci [eQTL] analysis) showed that the lead variant was associated with expression ofACP6, a lysophosphatidic acid phosphatase that regulates mitochondrial lipid biosynthesis (cis-eQTLp-values in blood and brain RNA expression data sets: <10−14in eQTLGen and 10−7in PsychEncode).DiscussionOur study highlights the potential role of mitochondrial lipid homeostasis in the progression of PD, which may be important in establishing new drug targets that might modify disease progression.

Background: Interference refers to learned associations and established behaviors “interfering” with response to new material. It forms a core pillar of executive functions, which are commonly affected in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Cognitive interference test (CIT) forms part of a smartphone application designed for ambulatory assessment in PD. Objective: The aims of this study were to establish that CIT could effectively demonstrate interference and would perform comparably to the Stroop Color-Word Test Victoria version (VST) despite PD-related motor impairment. Methods: Ninety-nine patients with PD were recruited. Initial evaluation included CIT, VST, Montreal cognitive assessment (MOCA), and Movement Disorders Society-sponsored revision of the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS-III). A group of patients underwent repeat assessment within 2 weeks. Thirty-four healthy controls were recruited for comparison. Results: Patients’ mean age was 66.2 years, disease duration was 8.7 years, on-state MDS-UPDRS-III was 22, and MOCA total score was 27. CIT effectively generated interference, whereby the total time taken to complete the incongruent task was 20% longer compared to that of the baseline task. CIT key test items demonstrated convergent validity to VST (r = 0.478–0.644, p < 0.0001) and satisfactory repeatability (intraclass correlation coefficient 0.46–0.808, p ≤ 0.0002). Performance on key CIT test parameters deteriorated with increasing age (r = 0.225–0.478, p < 0.01) and MDS-UPDRS-III total score (r = 0.354–0.481, p < 0.0001). When compared to controls and patients with less motor impairment, patients MDS-UPDRS-III > 30 took longer to complete CIT and VST and had lower MOCA-attention sub-score, implying that the degree of motor impairment could not be the sole explanation for reduced CIT performance. Conclusions: We established that despite motor impairment, the novel approach of using smartphone technology to test interference in PD patients is feasible.

AbstractIn 2015, a working group of the International Parkinsonʼs and Movement Disorders Society (MDS) presented new clinical diagnostic criteria for Parkinsonʼs disease (PD). This review outlines the key insights with regard to pathophysiology, various clinical manifestations and clinical progression which form the basis for a redefinition and the new, summarized clinical diagnostic criteria of Parkinson’s disease. Essential findings, which led to the new diagnostic criteria, include (i) the recognition of the importance of non-motor symptoms, which may have a tremendous influence on the quality of life of patients and have an increasing relevance with regard to early and differential diagnosis of PD is stated. (ii) The categorization of dementia in the course of Parkinson’s disease. While there has been a clear separation between Parkinson’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies so far, now a continuum is postulated which summarizes Parkinson’s disease without, with late and with early (within the first year after the occurrence of motor symptoms) dementia under the umbrella term of Lewy Body Diseases (LBD). (iii) The realization of a slowly spreading process of neurodegeneration occurring throughout different parts of the nervous system. This resulted in the definition of different phases of the disease, the preclinical, prodromal and clinical phase. In particular, the definition of the prodromal phase, characterized by different clinical parameters and further biomarkers still to be implemented, opens up new possibilities for early diagnosis and in the long run early treatment of Parkinson’s disease. (iv) The insight that the clinical phase is characterized by different forms of disease progression. For genetic variants (e. g., GBA or LRRK2) a separate clinical-genetic category is proposed, in idiopathic Parkinson’s disease subtypes should be characterized by clearly distinct prognosis, progression and/or treatment strategies. The MDS Task Force proposes to keep the current gold standard of typical clinical motor symptom presentation and post-mortem verification of α-synucleinopathy for the diagnosis of PD. The new clinical diagnostic criteria were designed using a typical clinical expert as benchmark, codifying the expert diagnostic process to make it reproducible and easily applicable. The new diagnostic criteria now contain absolute exclusion criteria, supportive criteria and “red flags” in addition to the assessment of the cardinal motor symptoms. Specific ancillary diagnostic tests (e. g., imaging techniques) can be implemented; furthermore the time course and severity of symptoms are taken into account.

From East to West: the Brazilian Theosophical Society and Neoesoterism in Brasília The present article proposes a discussion about the West-East relationship, trying to understand how it is present in the neo-esoteric context in contemporary times, especially in the New Age movement. We start from the assumption that there was at first, a creation of what we mean by the East by the Western look in its colonial interest, which attracted many travelers, adventurers and writers to the countries considered exotic, as Egypt and India. Thus emerged in the academy the Orientalism, which among its premises investigates these relations between Europeans and their colonies. In the 20th century, there is a dynamic and a proliferation of diverse forms of esoteric religiosities that travel to Eastern countries to seek in these experiences the foundations of new doctrines. We highlight in this article the Brazilian Theosophical Society and the establishment of its headquarters in Brasilia, a fact that is closely related to several utopian, mythical and mystical beliefs attributed to the founding of the new Brazilian capital. Brasília, the dream of many Brazilian statesmen, took shape in 1960, representing a new era of cultural and socioeconomic changes in the Brazilian Highlands. His project had Christianity as one of its bases, but from the different interpretations of a prophetic dream of Father Don Bosco, new religiousness pilgrims to the region, believing that the place is the true Promised Land flowing milk and honey.

In the elderly population, Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder and is associated with morphological changes in the basal ganglia, especially the substantia nigra (SN). This study aimed to evaluate the volume and signal intensity (SI) of SN using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to detect structural changes and investigate the relationship between the onset side and disease severity of PD. Clinical features and imaging data of 58 patients with PD were retrospectively analyzed from their medical records. Axial T2-weighted fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequences of 3 Tesla (T) MRIs were used for the measurements. The right and left SN volumes and SI measurements were calculated in duplicate by 2 blinded and qualified neuroradiologists. The side of disease onset, disease duration, levodopa equivalent daily dose, Movement Disorder Society-sponsored Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS III) motor score, and modified Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) scale scores were recorded and compared with SN volume and SI measurements. No statistically significant difference was found between the disease onset side and contralateral SN volume or SI measurements (P > .05). Despite high inter- and intra-rater reliability rates, there was no significant difference in the volume and SI of the contralateral SN according to H&Y stages (P > .05). Furthermore, SN volume and SI measurements were not significantly correlated with disease duration and MDS-UPDRS III motor score (P > .05). SN volume and SI values measured using axial FLAIR 3T MRI are not correlated with the side of onset or disease severity in PD. New imaging methods are required to detect preclinical or early-stage PD.

Background. Medication is often changed after hospital discharge in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Objective. This observational study aimed to describe changes in PD medication after discharge and explore their association with self-reported adherence and clinical parameters. Methods. During hospitalisation sociodemographic characteristics, the Movement Disorder Society-sponsored revision of the Unified PD Rating Scale for motor function (MDS-UPDRS III), Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) stage, levodopa equivalent daily dose (LEDD), Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) score, Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score, nonmotor symptoms questionnaire (NMSQ), and Stendal Adherence to Medication Score (SAMS) were collected in 125 people with PD. A semistructured interview was conducted 1 month after discharge to determine the extent and reasons for medication changes. Results. Thirty-eight patients (30.4%) changed their PD medication after discharge. Most changes (20.8%) were performed by physicians while 9.6% of patients changed their medication by themselves due to side effects, missing effect of the medication, missing knowledge about the indication, running out of medication, or nonspecific reason. This led to decreased doses while changes by physicians resulted in both increase and decrease of doses as well as new drug prescription. Patients without changes, patients with changes performed by them, and patients with changes performed by physicians did not differ in age, disease duration, MDS-UPDRS III, LEDD, NMSQ, MoCA, BDI-II, gender, marital status, or education. However, patients who themselves made the changes were more likely to be nonadherent according to baseline SAMS. Patients who made changes after discharge had higher SAMS modification and forgetting subscores than patients without changes or with changes made by physicians. Conclusion. Both intended and unintended nonadherence occur in patients who change medication after discharge. The use of an adherence questionnaire during inpatient treatment may help detect patients with higher risk of changing medication after discharge.

Abstract. This article introduces a new scientific paradigm that might allow the investigation of the neurological correlates of the Rorschach test without using expensive and time consuming tools such as the fMRI or the EEG. Based on the literature on the Mozart effect, we anticipated that preactivation of a given brain network before exposure to the Rorschach cards would associate with the increased production of responses (or determinants) presumed to be associated with that same network. To pilot test this hypothesis, we focused on the postulated link between human movement (M) responses and mirror neuron system (MNS) activity, and investigated whether preactivation of the MNS would associate with the increased production of M responses. Specifically, 30 students were administered a subset of Rorschach cards immediately after watching three short videos aimed at activating the MNS at three different levels (no/low/high activation). Although no statistically significant differences among the three conditions were found, a linear trend in the expected direction (p = .107), with medium effect size (η² = .087) was observed. In addition to providing information on the M response, this article introduces a new scientific paradigm to investigate the neurological correlates of the Rorschach.

This paper examines the challenges facing the Society of Muslim Brothers in Egypt as it negotiates the democratic opening of the Arab spring. An Islamist movement with an established ideological track record, the Society of Muslim Brothers has played a prominent role in Egyptian society for over eighty years. It has now emerged as a major political faction, but its Islamist values and goals may conflict with the democratic politics to which it has committed. Compromise is not new to the Society of Muslim Brothers; it has survived as a movement by doing so. Working on behalf of the Islamist cause in the streets, however, is vastly different than representing an entire nation in the halls of power. Now the Society of Muslim Brothers must decide whether to reinterpret its Islamist agenda for the good of the polity or reinterpret democracy for narrow movement interests.

IntroductionParkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the world. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a new non-invasive therapeutic option for treating the motor symptoms of PD. HIFU is an imaging-guided procedure for therapeutic brain ablation that has been used for patients with essential tremor and neuropathic pain. It is indicated for patients older than 22 years of age who have PD that is refractory to drug treatment and are ineligible for surgery. The objective of this study was to conduct an early assessment of HIFU subthalamotomy for the treatment of motor symptoms in patients with PD.MethodsHIFU was identified by the early awareness and alert system, SINTESIS- nuevas tecnologías, of the Agencia de Evaluación de Tecnologías Sanitarias at the Instituto de Salud Carlos III. Relevant literature published to October 2021 was identified by searching PubMed, EMBASE, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the Cochrane Library.ResultsOne prospective study and one randomized controlled trial (RCT) were found that assessed the efficacy and safety of HIFU subthalamotomy for treating the motor symptoms of PD. The Movement Disorder Society-Sponsored Revision of the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale Part III (MDS-UPDRS III) was used to measure changes in symptoms (>30% change from baseline was considered clinically relevant). Both studies reported a reduction of symptoms in the intervention group. The MDS-UPDRS III score changed from 16.6 to 7.5 six months after treatment in the prospective study and from 19.9 to 9.9 four months after treatment in the RCT (a decrease of 11.6 points was observed after 12 months). The main adverse events reported were dyskinesia, speech and gait disturbances, and weakness, all of which resolved without treatment.ConclusionsThe results regarding the efficacy and safety of HIFU for treating the motor symptoms of PD are promising. HIFU is a non-invasive procedure that eliminates the risks associated with surgery. Although rapid diffusion of this technology is expected, further studies and economic evaluation are needed.

Background Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative brain disorder associated with early-onset functional motor impairments (Rana et al., 2012). There are several assessment scales for the evaluation of PD, but many motor measurement protocols lack reference to the qualitative assessment of functional mobility in everyday life (Opara et al., 2017). Moreover, previous studies have shown that pharmaceutical treatments in combination with physical therapy play an important role in improving motor symptoms, but the benefits do not seem to extend to mental well-being (Fox et al., 2018). Growing evidence suggest that an interdisciplinary approach by integrating musical activity with exercises may have the potential to improve both functional mobility and psychological wellbeing (Barnish & Barran, 2020). Methods The first phase of this mixed methods study includes a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) consultation process (workshops and interviews; Rose et al., 2022) to develop a context-appropriate new group-based intervention program for and with PwP and health professionals. The focus will lie on music activity and the use music imagery to develop individual jukeboxes of musical cues to combat motor symptoms such as rigidity and freeze of gait. To evaluate the efficacy and the generalisability of the program, a 12-week within-subject repeated measures controlled trial will be conducted in Switzerland and the UK. An accurate and reliable quantitative measurement protocol will be developed to enable assessment of disease progression, and evaluation of interventions alongside qualitative observations of mobility in PwP. Moreover, we aim to provide fine-grained assessment of clinical measures (such as the Timed Up and Go) using an integrated motion capture (MoCap) and gait mat analysis system. Expected Outcomes and Perspectives This project lays the foundation for the development of non-pharmaceutical and low-cost intervention programs. Our PPI approach will provide better individualised and targeted prevention strategies to counteract the increasing financial and personal burden of PD worldwide. A unique aspect of the study is to develop a new quantitative functional mobility measurement protocol to assess PwP over time. This research approach will contribute to our understanding of functional mobility symptoms and the use of music in PD to reduce symptom severity and improve quality of life. References Barnish, M. This study examines plogging as an environmental movement, using Claus Offe’s new social movement theory to critically analyze why its value as an environmental movement has not been recognized in Korean society. Four rounds of in-depth interviews and narrative analysis were conducted between 2 October and 28 December 2022, which involved eight individuals who participated in and organized the plogging movement. The results revealed three reasons for plogging’s failure to be appreciated by Korean society as an environmental movement: (1) the plogging movement overlaps with existing social movements; (2) the generational gap related to plogging movement participants stemming from the “new middle class”; and (3) conglomerates using the plogging movement as a marketing tool. The plogging movement has value as a new proactive, social movement for environmental protection that centers on people’s participation. However, long-standing ideological and structural issues embedded in Korean society hinder the recognition of plogging’s value.

Background The use of serious games (SG) has received increasing attention in health care, and can be applied for both rehabilitation and evaluation of motor signs of several diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, the use of these instruments in clinical practice is poorly observed, since there is a scarcity of games that, during their development process, simultaneously address issues of usability and architectural design, contributing to the non-satisfaction of the actual needs of professionals and patients. Thus, this study aimed to present the architecture and usability evaluation at the design stage of a serious game, so-called RehaBEElitation, and assess the accessibility of the game. Methods The game was created by a multidisciplinary team with experience in game development and PD, taking into consideration design guidelines for the development of SG. The user must control the movements of a bee in a 3D environment. The game tasks were designed to mimic the following movements found in the gold-standard method tool—Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS)—for the assessment of individuals with PD: hand opening and closing, hand extension and flexion, hand adduction and abduction, finger tapping, and forearm supination and pronation. The user interacts with the game using a wearable interface device that embeds inertial and tactile sensors. The architecture of RehaBEElitation was detailed using the business process model (BPM) notation and the usability of the architecture was evaluated using the Nielsen-Shneiderman heuristics. Game accessibility was evaluated by comparing the overall scores of each phase between 15 healthy participants and 15 PD patients. The PD group interacted with the game in both the ON and OFF states. Results The system was modularized in order to implement parallel, simultaneous and independent programming at different levels, requiring less computational effort and enabling fluidity between the game and the control of the interface elements in real time. The developed architecture allows the inclusion of new elements for patient status monitoring, extending the functionality of the tool without changing its fundamental characteristics. The heuristic evaluation contemplated all the 14 heuristics proposed by Shneiderman, which enabled the implementation of improvements in the game. The evaluation of accessibility revealed no statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) between groups, except for the healthy group and the PD group in the OFF state of medication during Phase 3 of the game. Conclusions The proposed architecture was presented in order to facilitate the reproduction of the system and extend its application to other scenarios. In the same way, the heuristic evaluation performed can serve as a contribution to the advancement of the SG design for PD. The accessibility evaluation revealed that the game is accessible to individuals with PD.

Pathological tremor is an oscillation of body parts at 3–10 Hz, determined by the output of spinal motor neurons (MNs), which receive synaptic inputs from supraspinal centers and muscle afferents. The behavior of spinal MNs during tremor is not well understood, especially in relation to the activation of the multiple muscles involved. Recent studies on patients with essential tremor have shown that antagonist MN pools receive shared input at the tremor frequency. In this study, we investigated the synaptic inputs related to tremor and voluntary movement, and their coordination across antagonist muscles. We analyzed the spike trains of motor units (MUs) identified from high-density surface electromyography from the forearm extensor and flexor muscles in 15 patients with essential tremor during postural tremor. The shared synaptic input was quantified by coherence and phase difference analysis of the spike trains. All pairs of spike trains in each muscle showed coherence peaks at the voluntary drive frequency (1–3 Hz, 0.2 ± 0.2, mean ± SD) and tremor frequency (3–10 Hz, 0.6 ± 0.3) and were synchronized with small phase differences (3.3 ± 25.2° and 3.9 ± 22.0° for the voluntary drive and tremor frequencies, respectively). The coherence between MN spike trains of antagonist muscle groups at the tremor frequency was significantly smaller than intramuscular coherence. We predominantly observed in-phase activation of MUs between agonist/antagonist muscles at the voluntary frequency band (0.6 ± 48.8°) and out-of-phase activation at the tremor frequency band (126.9 ± 75.6°). Thus MNs innervating agonist/antagonist muscles concurrently receive synaptic inputs with different phase shifts in the voluntary and tremor frequency bands. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Although the mechanical characteristics of tremor have been widely studied, the activation of the affected muscles is still poorly understood. We analyzed the behavior of motor units of pairs of antagonistic wrist muscle groups in patients with essential tremor and studied their activity at voluntary movement- and tremor-related frequencies. We found that the phase relation between inputs to antagonistic muscles is different at the voluntary and tremor frequency bands.

In the current economic crisis, social movements are simultaneously facing two types of challenges: first, they are confronting institutions which are less able (or willing) to mediate new demands for social justice and equity emerging from various sectors of society, and second, given the highly individualised structure of contemporary society, they are also experiencing difficulties in building bonds of solidarity and cooperation among people, bonds which are a fundamental resource for collective action. It is in this context that protests waves, which may be very relevant, are in fact often short-lived, and it is in this context that we detect the rise and consolidation of new mutualistic and cooperative experiences within which (similarly to the past) new ties and frames for collective action are created. This article discusses and analyses social movement organisations which focus on both the intensification of economic problems and the difficulties of rebuilding social bonds and solidarity within society, emphasising solidarity and the use of ‘alternative’ forms of consumption as means to re-embed the economic system within social relations, starting from the local level. While discussing what is new and/or what has been renewed in new Sustainable Community Movement Organisations, the article will develop an analytical framework which will combine social movements and political consumerism theories by focusing on two basic dimensions: consumer culture and identity and organisational resources and repertoire of action.

Feedback from load and movement sensors can modify timing and magnitude of the motor output in the stepping stick insect. One source of feedback is stretch reception by the femoral chordotonal organ (fCO), which encodes such parameters as the femorotibial (FTi) joint angle, the angular velocity, and its acceleration. Stimulation of the fCO causes a postural resistance reflex, during quiescence, and can elicit the opposite, so-called active reaction (AR), which assists ongoing flexion during active movements. In the present study, we investigated the role of fCO feedback for the difference in likelihood of generating ARs on the inside vs. the outside during curve stepping. We analyzed the effects of fCO stimulation on the motor output to the FTi and the neighboring coxa-trochanter and thorax-coxa joints of the middle leg. In inside and outside turns, the probability for ARs increases with increasing starting angle and decreasing stimulus velocity; furthermore, it is independent of the total angular excursion. However, the transition between stance and swing motor activity always occurs after a specific angular excursion, independent of the turning direction. Feedback from the fCO also has an excitatory influence on levator trochanteris motoneurons (MNs) during inside and outside turns, whereas the same feedback affects protractor coxae MNs only during outside steps. Our results suggest joint- and body side-dependent processing of fCO feedback. A shift in gain may be responsible for different AR probabilities between inside and outside turning, whereas the general control mechanism for ARs is unchanged. NEW & NOTEWORTHY We show that parameters of movement feedback from the tibia in an insect during curve walking are processed in a body side-specific manner, and how. From our results it is highly conceivable that the difference in motor response to the feedback supports the body side-specific leg kinematics during turning. Future studies will need to determine the source for the inputs that determine the local changes in sensory-motor processing.

Efficient mobility management involves micromobilityprinciples. The performance of the Hierarchical MobileIPv6 (HMIPv6) protocol, a representative micro-mobilityapproach, is affected by the Mobility Anchor Point (MAP)selection. In this paper, we propose a new selection method based on a prediction of the future movements of Mobile Nodes (MNs). The proposed algorithms exploit the information about the future availability of MAPs and choose those MAPs that assure a better service. An improvement to the evaluation methodology is also proposed. The algorithms are compared to each other notonly in synthetic but also in realistic internet topologies, which has not been a practice in the past. The simulation results show promising improvements in terms of distance from chosen MAPs and frequency of MAP changes. Moreover, we showed that, for perceivable improvement of MAP selection, absolute accuracy of movement prediction is not required. As pioneers in the mobility management analysis in realistic environment, we ascertain that offering MAP services over more than one Autonomous System (AS) proves beneficial.

The mirror neuron system (MNS) has been a captivating area of research since its discovery in macaque monkeys [1]. Researchers have established the role and presence of the human auditory mirror system in both empathy [2] and musical creativity [3]. As well, the mirror system allows to learn new behaviors by observation, facilitating knowledge acquisition and action understanding. In addition, research has indicated the influence of stimulus valence on the human MNS [4]. The human brain is sensitive to the positive valence of words, and this reactivity may vary with the strength of the valence compared to negative words. Additionally, it can perceive differences in valence for negative stimuli and words. However, what about emotional words that are auditory? Do these words’ valence, whether positive, negative, or neutral, impact auditory mirror neurons and cortical excitability? The study examines how auditory words of different valences affect the MNS and cortical activity. This novel approach uses auditory stimuli to examine the role of mirror neurons in neuromodulation through a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) protocol, which has not been done in previous investigations. The results of this study suggest that both positive and negative words will induce greater excitability [4], as evidenced by motor evoked potentials. The results of this study will have broad applications. Firstly, it will offer a new contribution to the investigation of mirror neurons through TMS protocol. Secondly, inferences can be drawn and applied in the field of therapeutics, where language is used as a tool to mediate the process. In general, it will increase personal awareness of language in daily communication, leading to an enhanced communication process. Furthermore, the study’s findings imply the existence of auditory mirror neurons and their pivotal role in comprehending the emotional valence of different words, thereby influencing our feelings. This will advance our understanding of the human brain and empower us to make informed decisions. The study is being conducted with the HSE Automated system for non-invasive brain stimulation, which allows for simultaneous recording of brain activity and eye movement.

AbstractThis paper discusses the origins and the implementation of the New Life Movement (NLM) in the Jiangxi Province between 1934 and 1938. Based upon primary sources produced during this period, it explores how the Nationalist Party utilised the NLM for the purposes of national reconstruction and social mobilisation. The first section analyses how elements of anti-communism, Christianity and state Confucianism came into play in the NLM; the second section analyses how the Nationalists reinforced the idea of ‘hygienic modernity’ by projecting it into the realms of state building and mass mobilisation; the third section discusses the changes introduced in society by the Nationalists with the creation of semi-governmental organisations; and the fourth section examines the involvement of the NLM with preparation for the war against Japan (1937–1945). The paper argues that the NLM had a lasting impact on Chinese society, and it contributed to shape citizenship and national identity.

Changes in population movement are a social indicator and reflect the state of society. In the past, Korea's population movement was dominated by outward movement from central cities, reflecting the compressed growth of modernization. However, since the 2000s, population outflows from metropolitan areas have begun to exceed population inflows, indicating a change in population movement from the past. In the case of Jeju, inflow of people has exceeded the outflow of people since 2010. The purpose of this article is to explore a theoretical framework that can adequately analyze regional migration to Jeju as a cause of the rapid population growth in Jeju since 2010, noting that migration is not a characteristic of Jeju but a phenomenon of counterurbanization in Korean society. I first reviews the flow of research on regional migration to Jeju and then reviews the research on the counterurbanization of population movement in Korea. Based on this, the applicability of mobility theory as a new theoretical approach is explored in order to comprehensively and systematically study regional migration to Jeju, which exhibits various regional migration patterns.

Abstract Alcohol policy in New Brunswick was contested terrain. Following the political defeat of prohibition, the province introduced government liquor stores in 1927, but refused for more than three decades to license public establishments, although Legions and private clubs enjoyed a quasi-legal status. By the end of the Second World War, the province had one of the lowest liquor consumption rates in Canada, a small but vocal temperance movement, and a fairly dry hospitality sector. During the 1960s and 1970s, access to alcohol was liberalized with the licensing of taverns and dining rooms, the decriminalization of public drunkenness, and the lowering of the drinking age to 19. Meanwhile, the public health, social service, legal and voluntary sectors lobbied for prevention and treatment programs based on the disease concept of alcoholism, rather than the moralistic arguments of the older temperance movement. By 1975, it was clear that New Brunswick's alcohol control policies mirrored the wider Canadian experience as residents were treated to competing discourses: drinking was a modern, reasonable, and fashionable recreation but alcohol was society's most widespread and costly addictions problem.

This paper examines the consumer movement in Malaysia, especially the Consumers' Association of Penang and the Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations. It traces their history from the late 1960s, through a period of rapid social and economic change associated with the New Economic Policy of the 1970s and 1980s. Partly because of the absence of other NGOs in Malaysia (due to government clampdowns on civil society), consumer groups were able to take a prominent position and to develop socio-political campaigns on behalf of the poor and the disadvantaged. This proved an inspiration to consumer organizing globally, especially in the developed world, but it is not clear that consumerism as a social movement can be sustained. Since the mid-1980s, other NGOs have emerged, eclipsing the influence of consumerism, and promoting a human rights agenda which has overtaken the politics of consumption as the dominant oppositional rhetoric of non-governmental groups.

In this paper, we apply Polanyi's double movement to characterize the potential and observed impacts of public-private and public-philanthropic partnerships for the development of pro-poor value chains. We highlight the contradiction between the goals of these partnerships in international agricultural development, which seek to shift power dynamics and counter market exclusion, and the internal logic of these hybrid governance approaches, which reflect the tensions of market society from which they come. We present case studies from Honduras, Peru, and Mali of agricultural public-private and public-philanthropic partnerships and their constituent actors, identifying roles and relationships among actors that personify double movement negotiations within pro-poor market-oriented development. The cases highlight the implications for civil society actors of hybrid governance systems that utilize market mechanisms to address the destructive tendencies of capitalist development. We conclude that partnerships characterized by a mismatch of responsibilities and power relations among civil society and private actors generate a new type of double movement that does not generate durable institutions and that limits the impacts of the partnerships for poor farmers.

Introduction. Parkinson′s disease (PD) is a slowly progressive chronic disease and currently all available treatments are aimed at alleviating the symptoms of the disease and improving the quality of patients′ life. The main correction is drug therapy. Taking into account the progressive nature of the disease, the insuffi cient effectiveness of drug therapy, as well as early and frequent complications from drug therapy, the search for new pathogenetic and symptomatic drugs, as well as additional non-drug methods of treatment, is constantly being conducted. A number of authors have also previously demonstrated positive changes in the state of motor functions and regression of some neurological manifestations in PD patients with the use of certain osteopathic correction techniques. The above suggests that osteopathic correction may become one of the new directions in the treatment of PD within the framework of complex therapy. The aim of the study is to substantiate the possibility of the inclusion of osteopathic correction of patients with Parkinson′s disease in complex therapy.Materials and methods. A controlled, randomized prospective study was carried out at the Bakhrushin Brothers City Clinical Hospital and the «Ear, Throat and Nose Clinic» (Moscow) medical center from April 2019 to January 2020. The study included 24 patients aged 60 to 78 years with a diagnosis of Parkinson′s disease stage I–II according to Hoehn and Yahr. Depending on the applied treatment method, the patients were divided by simple randomization into two comparable groups (main and control) of 12 people each. All observed patients received common drug therapy and exercise therapy. Additionally, the patients of the main group underwent osteopathic correction (within 3 months, once every 14 days, a total of 6 sessions were performed). All patients, regardless of the group, underwent an osteopathic examination before and after treatment, with the formulation of an osteopathic conclusion; the quality of life was assessed according to the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey, and the impact of motor and non-motor symptoms of PD on the daily activity of patients was assessed using the unifi ed PD assessment scale of the International Society of Movement Disorders (MDS UPDRS).Results. The use of osteopathic correction together with drug therapy in PD patients leads to a statistically signifi cant (p<0,05) improvement in quality of life indicators (vitality scale and physical health scale) and daily physical activity (depression level). There is also a change in the structure of the dominant somatic dysfunctions (SD) in the form of a signifi cant decrease in the number of global SD.Conclusion. To increase the effectiveness of complex therapy for patients with PD, the common drug therapy can be supplemented with osteopathic methods of correction.

The progress of natural science together with some of the crimes and violent actions committed by religions were central to the New Age Movement of Atheism since the first decade of the century. Their atheistic evangelicalism is for the secularization of society and the dissolution of religions in every aspect of human life. This paper hinges on Kahambings development of the concept vanishing mediator and applies its synthesized framework as methodology. The application of the concept: a.) retroactively traces an intervention, b.) evaluates the intervention, c.) identifies the mediator, and d.) locates the vanishing point. Applying this to new age atheism, the discussion of the study is divided into three parts. First, it introduces the historical origin and atheistic interventions on religions; second, the movement is treated as a vanishing mediator or transition from religious to secular society; and lastly, it gives a futuristic account of a secular world that is rooted on the influence of new atheism in the era.

The emergence of charismatic groups in mainline churches has infused new worship life and increase in membership and structure. The historiography of Anglican Fasting and Prayer Society, examined the characteristics and impact of the movement to the development of the Christian faith in Urhobo between 1990 and 2017. The functional theory which stressed on the role of religion in the society was adopted. Historical, phenomenological, participant observation, and oral interview methods were applied. Data were drawn from primary and secondary source to allow for unbiased analysis of findings. The movement, has affected the worship life of members which has led to the speedy growth and development of Anglican churches in Warri, Ughelli, and Sapele Dioceses. The rift between some leaders of the movement and authorities of the Anglican Church occasioned the founding of new churches which has expanded the Christian landscape in Urhobo. Wittingly or unwittingly, the movement has become a breeding ground for charismatic leaders and church founders in the area. The paper recommended for the sustenance of the movement; appointment of chaplains to each branch of AFPS and establishment of theological institution to empower members and promote balanced growth of the church. Further in-depth research on the churches that emerged from the movement will enrich our understanding of growth pattern of new generation churches in the Niger Delta, Nigeria, and Africa by extension.

In an attempt to make sense of shifts in the social movement sector and its relationship to conventional politics over the past forty years, some have proposed that Western nations are increasingly becoming "movement societies." Accordingly, there are four key characteristics of the movement society: (1) over time expansion of protest; (2) over time diffusion of protest; (3) over time institutionalization of protest; and (4) over time institutionalization of state responses to protest. Using newly available data on over 19,000 protest events occurring in the U.S. between 1960 and 1986, we evaluate these four claims. Our findings suggest that movement society scholars are correct in some respects: the size of protest events has grown over time, the percentage of events at which at least one social movement organization is present has increased over time, the number of distinct protest claims has increased over time, and violent forms of protest policing have decreased over time. However, our findings call into question other movement society claims: the number of protests has declined over time, fewer organizations were present at each protest event over time, fewer new groups initiated events over time, fewer new claims emerged over time, and there was more significant activity by groups on the right in the 1960s and 1970s than expected. We suggest potential explanations for some of the negative findings in an attempt to refine the movement society arguments.

We analyze the peculiarities of the process of institutionalization of the volunteer movement in Russia. The genesis of the concept of “institutionalization of the volunteer movement” as a mechanism of social and state interaction, support of volunteer initiatives for social efficiency of volunteer activity is considered. We characterize new types of volunteering (educational, corporate volunteering, family, volunteering in the media). The process of institutionalization of the volunteer movement is defined through the prism of the model of development of the social movement, which includes seven phases (latent, articulatory, organizational, ideological, quantita-tive, organizational, institutional). Volunteer movement is defined as mobile, with a clear organi-zational structure (formal and non-formal), uniting various social groups, transmitting the ideas of volunteerism as a response to the solution of acute social problems. We focuse on the institutional processes in the field of volunteer activities, pursuing the goals of the best volunteer social and cultural actions. The main institutional elements of volunteer movements (volunteer programs, volunteer actions, specialized congresses, forums, conferences, specialized networks of volunteer organizations; volunteer associations, unions, councils; funds for support and development of volunteering; volunteer information networks; state and municipal programs to support volunteer initiatives; legal support of volunteer activities) are highlighted. The perspective directions of the volunteer movement institutionalization in Russia are revealed.

The main reason for the inconsistencies are certain basic principles: metaphysical naturalism and its concept of truth. There are ways out of these difficulties. In the course of this paper, and by using an analytical description of Foucault’s assumptions, I will examine the discursive and practical operation of the Scientology Church as a new religion movement that transcends the individual subject. I will describe the themes of Scientology as pastoral techniques, and its neo-liberal subjective constitution as a part of the conservative, normative mechanism of modern Western society, while arguing that they pose, at the same time, a potential ethical alternative that subverts the epistemological boundaries of Western liberal society.

Dubbed the New Institutionalism, this movement would have profound effects on the direction of research in Political Science and Sociology. The post-green movement years in Iran are marked by the emergence of a new generation of protest movements that no longer aim to reform the Islamic Republic by calling for a radical change in the political system. The two popular Movements in 2017 and 2019, severely repressed by the state, are examples of this political rupture and this paradigmatic shift. These popular protest movements, largely using social networks, were spontaneous, without leadership or political project. The Woman, Life and Freedom Movement that emerged from September 2022 in the context of a society in political impasse, was original and unprecedented. Despite the bloody repression, the Movement that was triggered after the death of Mahsa Aminin, the young girl arrested by the morality police caused a wide political crisis in Iran. The young girls and boys involved in this Movement protested against deficiencies and injustices that were directly linked to the authentic and human needs of individuals in modern society. This time too, the actors of the movement knew very well against what they were contesting without being able to propose an alternative project and a new horizon for society. The purpose of this text is to make a critical reading of these unaccomplished movements which, despite their ampleness or the legitimacy of their protest, fail in mobilizing the whole of society around a collective imaginary and imposing significant political change.
