Social Movements and Solidarity Structures in Crisis-Ridden Greece explores the rich grassroots experience of social movements in Greece between 2008 and 2016. Based on qualitative field research conducted in more than 50 social movement organizations in Greece’s two major cities, the book offers an in-depth analysis of the contentious mechanisms that led to the development of such solidarity initiatives. By analyzing the organizational structure, resources and identity of markets without middlemen, social and collective kitchens, organizations distributing food parcels, social clinics and self-managed cooperatives, this study explains the enlargement of boundaries of collective action in times of crisis.

An inherently action-focused research orientation, community-based participatory research is particularly well suited to dissemination and implementation research. Prominent among the latter are enhanced dissemination and implementation of findings through the authentic engagement of community partners and other stakeholders throughout. In this discussion of community-based participatory research, and the use of the Chinatown Restaurant Worker Study to illustrate its principles in action, the authors have highlighted many of the benefits community-based participatory research can offer to research and its dissemination and implementation. Drawing on this and other community-based participatory research case studies and literature, the chapter also suggests a number of implications that community-based participatory research holds for dissemination and implementation research, and bridging the gap between research and practice.

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic presented opportunities to engage in collective reflection about doing research in a continuing and unfolding global public health crisis. Focusing on qualitative and digital methods and taking “crisis” as a turning point for reflection, reflexivity and positionality in research methods and ethics, this volume particularly explores qualitative, arts-based and digital methods, while reflecting on researching in “fast” and “slow”, recurring and longer-term crises. The volume’s 15 chapters draw on experiences and reflections of 33 researchers doing diverse research amidst the pandemic, from the UK, Ireland, Nepal, New Zealand, Australia, Puerto Rico, Gaza, Nigeria and Guatemala. The contributions consider researching across different locations, highlighting research and researcher positionality, methodology, reflexivity and ethics. Different types of connections are made, surfacing ethical and creative dialogues across researcher-researched relationships and settings. The methods discussed in the chapters include ethnography, autoethnography and autonetnography; ‘digital kinning’; therapeutic ‘arts-based research and auto-ethnography’; creative museum practice connecting First Nations and Indigenous creators; phenomenology; participatory action research; and take in critical, feminist, decolonial and transformative approaches.The transnational dimension of this book forms an appropriate backdrop for rich and complex discussions of methods and ethics across the chapters. Findings from a participatory action research project conducted by the Welfare Warriors Research Collaborative (WWRC) are used to explore the questions of whether and what kind of psychology can support racially and ethnically diverse, low-income lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and gender nonconforming (LGBTGNC) liberation. Such issues cannot be understood through lenses of gender and sexuality alone and mainstream psychology—as well as the larger LGBT movement—has tended to ignore the formative ways oppressions are made to work together. Intersectionality and homonationalism are necessary concepts in a psychology of low-income, racially and ethnically diverse LGBTGNC liberation as well as an understanding of “resistance” that broadens to include building community among individuals as well as solidarity and coalition with sister social movements. Freedom of movement and the right to housing are explored as human rights relevant for a low-income LGBTGNC psychology of liberation.

This chapter provides an overview of how the Sí, Yo Puedo (SYP) curriculum and program was developed from a qualitative pilot study that examined the meaning of marriage, relationships, and domestic violence among a small group of immigrant Latina women between 2004 and 2007. A prevention model was developed from the original pilot study that essentially became the SYP 11-week, group format, culturally specific curriculum and program. Over a five-year period, evaluation of the SYP curriculum and program in group settings was conducted with different community-based agencies in two Midwestern states. Rigorous qualitative research methods and design such as action research, mixed-methods, and survey methods were used. These methods were used to examine participant’s experience, improve weekly sessions, assess group facilitator’s experience, and observe for any differences among participants after completing the program. The framework of community-based participatory research was used throughout the ongoing evaluation.

What can local histories of interracial conflict and collaboration teach us about the potential for urban equity and social justice in the future? Courtney Elizabeth Knapp chronicles the politics of gentrification and culture-based development in Chattanooga, Tennessee, by tracing the roots of racism, spatial segregation, and mainstream “cosmopolitanism” back to the earliest encounters between the Cherokee, African Americans, and white settlers. For more than three centuries, Chattanooga has been a site for multiracial interaction and community building; yet today public leaders have simultaneously restricted and appropriated many contributions of working-class communities of color within the city, exacerbating inequality and distrust between neighbors and public officials. Knapp suggests that “diasporic placemaking”—defined as the everyday practices through which uprooted people create new communities of security and belonging—is a useful analytical frame for understanding how multiracial interactions drive planning and urban development in diverse cities over time. By weaving together archival, ethnographic, and participatory action research techniques, she reveals the political complexities of a city characterized by centuries of ordinary resistance to racial segregation and uneven geographic development.

Evidence-based, prevention-oriented, and community-driven approaches are advocated to improve public health and reduce youth behavior problems, but there are few effective models for doing so. This book advances knowledge about this topic by describing the conditions and actions necessary for effective community-based prevention. The chapters review the ways in which communities can promote readiness to engage in prevention among local stakeholders; build and maintain diverse, well-functioning prevention coalitions; conduct local needs and resource assessments; collectively decide on prevention priorities; select evidence-based interventions that are a good fit with prioritized community needs, resources, and context; and implement evidence-based interventions (EBIs) with fidelity and sustain them over time. The Communities That Care (CTC) prevention system is described in detail to illustrate effective community-based prevention. CTC is a coalition-based prevention system shown to promote healthy youth development and reduce youth behavior problems community wide. It does so by assisting communities to: (1) increase awareness of and support for EBIs; (2) encourage positive interactions between community residents and youth; (3) conduct local needs assessments and collectively decide on priorities to target with EBIs; (4) implement EBIs that are matched to prioritized needs; and (5) ensure that EBIs are coordinated across community organizations, implemented with fidelity, widely disseminated, and evaluated. The book describes the development and evaluation of the CTC system, including how its developers used community-based participatory research to ensure that CTC could be feasibly implemented and employed rigorous research methods to assess the degree to which use of the system reduced adolescent behavior problems.

This book chronicles the dawn of the global movement for women’s rights in the first decades of the twentieth century. The founding mothers of this movement were not based primarily in the United States, however, or in Europe. Instead, Katherine M. Marino introduces readers to a cast of remarkable Latin American and Caribbean women whose deep friendships and intense rivalries forged global feminism out of an era of imperialism, racism, and fascism. Six dynamic activists form the heart of this story: from Brazil, Bertha Lutz; from Cuba, Ofelia Domíngez Navarro; from Uruguay, Paulina Luisi; from Panama, Clara Gonzoz; from Chile, Marta Vergara; and from the United States, Doris Stevens. This Pan-American network drove a transnational movement that advocated women’s suffrage, equal pay for equal work, maternity rights, and broader self-determination. Their painstaking efforts led to the enshrinement of women’s rights in the United Nations Charter and the development of a framework for international human rights. But their work also revealed deep divides, with Latin American activists overcoming U.S. presumptions to feminist superiority. As Marino shows, these early fractures continue to influence divisions among today’s activists along class, racial, and national lines. Marino’s multinational and multilingual research yields a new narrative for the creation of global feminism. The leading women introduced here were forerunners in understanding the power relations at the heart of international affairs. Their drive to enshrine fundamental rights for women, children, and all people of the world stands as a testament to what can be accomplished when global thinking meets local action.

James Joyce’s Ulysses was first published in New York in the Little Review between 1918 and 1920. What kind of reception did it have and how does the serial version of the text differ from the version most readers know, the iconic volume edition published in Paris in 1922 by Shakespeare and Company? Joyce prepared much of Ulysses for serial publication while resident in Zurich between 1915 and 1919. This original study, which is based on sustained archival research, goes behind the scenes in Zurich and New York to recover long-forgotten facts pertinent to the writing, reception, and interpretation of Ulysses. The Little Review serialization of Ulysses proved controversial from the outset and was ultimately stopped before Joyce had completed the work. The New York Society for the Suppression of Vice took successful legal action against the journal’s editors, on the grounds that the final instalment of the thirteenth chapter of Ulysses was obscene. This triumph of the social purity movement had far-reaching repercussions for Joyce’s subsequent publishing history, and for his ongoing efforts in composing Ulysses. After chapters of contextual literary history, the study moves on to consider the textual significance of the serialization. It breaks new ground in Joycean scholarship by paying critical attention to Ulysses as a serial text. It concludes by examining the myriad ways in which Joyce revised and augmented Ulysses while resident in Paris, showing how Joyce made Ulysses more sexually suggestive and overt in explicit response to its legal reception in New York.
