Abstract Nearly 40 different Asian elm (Ulmus spp.) biotypes, growing at The Morton Arboretum, Lisle, IL, were evaluated in laboratory bioassays and in the field for suitability and feeding preference of the spring cankerworm Paleacrita vernata (Peck) and the fall cankerworm, Alsophila pometaria (Harris). No-choice and multiple-choice laboratory feeding studies, and field defoliation surveys revealed that U. castaneifolia, U. changii, U. chenmoui, U. davidiana, U. elongata, U. gaussenii, U. glaucescens var. lasiophylla, U. japonica, U. lamellosa, U. lanceaefolia, U. macrocarpa, U. parvifolia, U. propinqua, U. propinqua var. suberosa, U. prunifolia, U. pseudopropinqua, U. taihangshanensis, U. wallichiana, U. wilsoniana, U. wilsoniana-98, and the simple and complex hybrids U. davidiana x U. japonica, U. davidiana x U. propinqua, U. japonica x U. ‘Morton’-Accolade™, U. ‘Morton’-Accolade™ x U. japonicapumila, U. ‘Morton Glossy’-Triumph™, and U. ‘Morton Plainsman’-Vanguard™ x U. davidiana, were less suitable for larval development and pupation and less preferred by spring and fall cankerworm larvae. Ulmus americana, U. glaucescens, U. szechuanica, and the simple and complex hybrids U. davidiana x U. ‘Morton’-Accolade™, U. szechuanica x U. japonica, U. ‘Morton’-Accolade™, U. ‘Morton Red Tip’-Danada Charm™ and U. ‘Morton Plainsman’-Vanguard™ were more suitable for and more preferred by spring and fall cankerworm larvae. Rankings for larval development time were highly correlated with larval longevity, but the proportion of larvae pupating was correlated neither with larval longevity nor with larval development time. Pupal fresh weights also were correlated neither with larval longevity nor with larval development time. Mean fecal pellet weights were correlated with the proportion of larvae pupating, but were not correlated with pupal fresh weights. Ulmus chenmoui, U. glaucescens var. lasiophylla, U. lamellosa, U. macrocarpa, U. propinqua, U. prunifolia, and U. pseudopropinqua all showed medium to heavy leaf pubescence and were less suitable and less preferred by spring and fall cankerworms. Asian elms were least preferred by cankerworm larvae, followed in order of increasing preference by European and North American elms.

The aim is an assessment of the actual evapotranspiration of plants by using climate data in Nakhon Ratchasima with the R in the hydrological modeling function of Abtew and Morton CRAE formulation. There are using meteorological data from 2012 - 2016 at Nakhon Ratchasima station. The case analysis shows the results of evapotranspiration are the potential of evaporation of plants each year. Abtew analysis gave higher monthly evapotranspiration results during the dry season than Morton CRAE, but with Abtew formulation gave lower monthly evapotranspiration results during the rainy season than that of the method. The results are 2 ways to use evapotranspiration for water management, which is to analyze the amount of evapotranspiration for use in irrigation systems in order to water for plants should use the form of Abtew form because it can be seen that during the dry season and the plant has a high evapotranspiration value. Form Morton CRAE should be used to assess the potential water use of plants that can be seen in the dry season, the evaporation of plants is also less because in the surrounding environment there isn’t water and has little moisture causing plants to use less water.

Vehicle ad hoc networks (VANETs) are special wireless networks which help vehicles to obtain continuous and stable communication. Pseudonym revocation, as a vital security mechanism, is able to protect legal vehicles in VANETs. However, existing pseudonym-revocation schemes suffer from the issues of low certificate revocation list (CRL) generation and update efficiency, along with high CRL storage and transmission costs. In order to solve the above issues, this paper proposes an improved Morton-filter-based pseudonym-revocation scheme for VANETs (IMF-PR). IMF-PR establishes a new distributed CRL management mechanism to maintain a low CRL distribution transmission delay. In addition, IMF-PR improves the Morton filter to optimize the CRL management mechanism so as to improve CRL generation and update efficiency and reduce the CRL storage overhead. Moreover, CRLs in IMF-PR store illegal vehicle information based on an improved Morton filter data structure to improve the compress ratio and the query efficiency. Performance analysis and simulation experiments showed that IMF-PR can effectively reduce storage by increasing the compression gain and reducing transmission delay. In addition, IMF-PR can also greatly improve the lookup and update throughput on CRLs.

Our experiments show that using the Heath–Jarrow–Morton model to price interest-rate derivatives can be practically feasible if the Kusuoka approximation is used along with the tree-based branching algorithm.

Stephen C. Carlson's The Gospel Hoax sets out to validate the long-standing suspicion that Professor Morton Smith, late of Columbia University, forged his famous discovery of aletter of Clement of Alexandria, which quotes from a longer(“secret”)Gospel of Mark. This academic folklore has been passed on like an esoteric tradition since 1975, when Quentin Quesnell called on Smith to make the manuscript of this letter available for forensic testing in order to rule out the possibility of a recent hoax. Quesnell had difficulty substantiating his concerns. In his article in the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, he postulated that a modern scholar might have devised the letter as “a controlled experiment” in order to examine how scholars react to new evidence. Yet the manuscript of this letter, which Smith found in 1958, was inscribed on the last pages of a seventeenth-century book that purportedly was kept in a locked room of a monastery in the Judean desert. What modern forger would leave his creation there and gamble that someone would discover it in his lifetime? For this scenario to seem at all plausible, Quesnell needed to imply what he personally suspected, namely, that Smith forged it himself for this purpose. Accordingly, Quesnell described his hypothetical modern “mystifier” as someone who shared Smith's abilities, opportunities, resources, and interest in what people make of the document.

Au cours des vingt dernières années, les principaux concepts du traitement du signal ont trouvé leur homologue pour le cas de la géométrie numérique, et en particulier des modèles polygonaux de surfaces 3D. Ces traitements requièrent néanmoins un temps de calcul non négligeable lorsqu’on les applique sur des modèles de taille conséquente. Cette charge de calcul devient un frein important dans le contexte actuel, où les quantités massives de données 3D générées à chaque seconde peuvent potentiellement nécessiter l’application d’un sous-ensemble de ces opérateurs. La capacité à exécuter des opérateurs de traitement géométrique en un temps très court représente alors un verrou important pour les systèmes de conception, capture et restitution 3D dynamiques. Dans ce contexte, on cherche à accélérer de plusieurs ordres de grandeur certains algorithmes de traitement géométrique actuels, et à reformuler ou approcher ces algorithmes afin de diminuer leur complexité ou de les adapter à un environnement parallèle. Dans cette thèse, nous nous appuyons sur un objet compact et efficace permettant d’analyser les surfaces 3D à plusieurs échelles : les quadriques d’erreurs. En particulier, nous proposons de nouveaux algorithmes haute performance, maintenant à la surface des quadriques d’erreur représentatives de la géométrie. Un des principaux défis tient ici à la génération des structures adaptées en parallèle, afin d’exploiter les processeurs parallèles à grain fin que sont les GPU, la principale source de puissance disponible dans un ordinateur moderneOver the last twenty years, the main signal processing concepts have been adapted for digital geometry, in particular for 3D polygonal meshes. However, the processing time required for large models is significant. This computational load becomes an obstacle in the current context, where the massive amounts of data that are generated every second may need to be processed with several operators. The ability to run geometry processing operators with strong time constraints is a critical challenge in dynamic 3D systems. In this context, we seek to speed up some of the current algorithms by several orders of magnitude, and to reformulate or approximate them in order to reduce their complexity or make them parallel. In this thesis, we are building on a compact and effective object to analyze 3D surfaces at different scales : error quadrics. In particular, we propose new high performance algorithms that maintain error quadrics on the surface to represent the geometry. One of the main challenges lies in the effective generation of the right structures for parallel processing, in order to take advantage of the GPU

Este trabalho descreve o desenvolvimento de um sistema de controle com compensação de tempo morto aplicado a um ventilador para simular os efeitos do vento em modelos de embarcações. O sistema é instalado no tanque de provas do Departamento de Engenharia Naval da Escola Politécnica da USP. Um sistema de controle baseado em computador é elaborado para a realização dos testes e validação, procedendo-se inicialmente a identificação do sistema a ser controlado. Na malha de controle, o sinal de referência é a velocidade do vento desejada em uma distância pré-definida do ventilador e pode ser tanto um valor constante (representando um vento constante) ou um valor variante no tempo (representando uma rajada de vento). O sistema atuador consiste de um inversor de frequência que aciona o ventilador e a velocidade do vento é medida por um anemômetro, cujo sinal é usado como realimentação para o controlador. A sintonia da malha é realizada pelo método do modelo interno (IMC) e o efeito do tempo morto é observado nos testes, aplicando-se o compensador baseado no Preditor de Smith para minimizá-lo. Pelos resultados dos ensaios, conclui-se que o Preditor de Smith melhora o desempenho do sistema de geração de vento.This paper describes the development of a control system with dead time compensation applied to a fan to simulate wind effects in models of vessels. The system is installed on the academic towing tank of the Naval Architecture and Oceanic Engineering Department of the University of São Paulo. A control system based on computer is designed for testing and validation, proceeding initially to identify the system to be controlled. In the control loop, the set-point is the desired speed of the wind on a pre-defined distance from the fan and it can be either a constant value (representing a constant wind) or a time-varying value (representing a wind gust). The actuator system consists of a frequency-inverter that drives the fan and the wind speed is measured by an anemometer, whose signal is used as feedback to the controller. The tuning of the controller is made by the internal model control (IMC) and the effect of dead time is observed in the tests, applying the compensator based on Smith Predictor to minimize it. Through the results from the tests, it was concluded that the Smith Predictor improves the performance of the wind generation system.

Este trabalho tem como enfoque as dificuldades envolvidas em controlar sistemas de or-dem superior com atraso de transporte, onde a solu??o adotada para amenizar o efeito cau-sado pelo atraso ? a utiliza??o de um algoritmo de predi??o, composto pelas t?cnicas do Preditor de Smith e do Preditor de Smith Filtrado. Analisando os casos em que o modelo do sistema usado no algoritmo de predi??o n?o ? id?ntico ao real, foi poss?vel constatar a presen?a de erro na din?mica do sistema. Este erro pode amplificar o esfor?o de controle e o desgaste prematuro dos equipamentos envolvidos, levando em alguns casos a desestabili-zar o sistema. Diante disto, foi proposto o desenvolvimento de um sistema capaz de tratar as incertezas decorrentes da diferen?a entre o modelo e o sistema real, reduzindo o efeito do atraso de transporte sobre o sistema de controle. Como resultado foi gerada uma ferra-menta, que atua de forma aceit?vel para os casos testados, ajustando o modelo do processo e, consequentemente, melhorando a compensa??o de tempo morto.
This work considers the difficulties involved in the control of higher order systems with transport delay, where the solution adopted to mitigate the effect caused by the delay is the use of a prediction algorithm composed of the Smith Predictor techniques and Filtered Smith Predictor. Analyzing the cases where the system model used in the prediction algo-rithm is not identical to the real system, the presence of error in the system dynamics was observed. This error may amplify the control effort and cause premature wear of the equipment involved, in some cases leading the system to instability. In this manner, the development of a tool to treat uncertainties originated from the difference between the sys-tem model and the real system, thereby reducing the effect of transmission delay of the control system, has been proposed. A software to adjust the process model and thus im-prove the dead time compensation was implemented.

The concept of religious conservatism is related to the faith of the Anabaptists in early
16Ih century Switzerland, Germany and Holland as developed by the Swiss Brethren,
maintained and developed by the Mennonites and Amish in Europe and thence into
the USA, especially in Pennsylvania.
Tenets of the faith are revealed in these peoples' actualised theology as they have long
unyoked themselves from the outside world and formed a free church. The continuity
of the faith is traced through a number of Confessions of Faith since 1527.
The purity of the redemptive community is ensured by the order or 'ordnung' and its
demands are known to those undergoing adult baptism. Different interpretations of the
ordnung and the strictness of the ban on sinners have resulted in schisms since Menno
Simons and Jacob Ammann. The faith has remained firm in spite of schisms also
resulting from reactions to technological changes and pressures from the outside
world.
Conservative attitudes are revealed in these groups' old-fashioned distinctive simple
clothing, hair, beards, head covering and transport. Pacifism and 'gelassenheit', the
yielding to God's Will and that of the congregation, add to this distinctiveness and
conservatism.
The great number of schisms among the Mennonites reveal differences in imposing
the 'ban', shunning (or meidung) or excommunication and the degrees of rejection of
contemporary material changes (e.g. automobiles, telephones, mains electricity). The
most conservative are the 'Old Orders'.
The selection of ministers (by the 'lot') and their roles are examined and continuity is
emphasised by the practice of feet washing (insisted by Arnrnann) and singing hymns
from a mid- 16th century hymnal, the Ausbund.
Numerous references from the New Testament are quoted in justification of their
religious beliefs within an actualised theology and the relationship between
congregations and baptised believers is also addressed in some detail.
Their possible future as religious groups may be conjectural in a world so inimical to
so many of their beliefs. They remain a powerful witness to His word in spite of their
small numbers. Observations of and conversations with many of these people over the
past thirty years confirm their personal characteristics outlined in the thesis.
Through their religious beliefs, their actualised theology and steadfastness in living
their beliefs, they can contribute an understanding of the contemporary world by
offering their religious conservatism as exemplifying their belief in witnessing a
comer of God's Kingdom. The underlying paradoxes in their lives must, however, be
fully appreciated.
The thesis is that the nature of their long-held beliefs, discipline and gelassenheit
brings fulfilment and a witness to the outside world. Their steadfastness makes
acceptable the many paradoxes in their lives, reflecting a need to react constantly to

When Mormons arrived in northern Arizona among the Navajo and Hopi Indians in the late 1850s, Mormon-Indian relations were initially friendly. It was not too long, however, before trouble began in conflicts over water use and land rights. Federal agents would soon consider Mormons a threat to the peaceful Hopis because both the Navajo and Mormons were expanding their land claims. Indian agents relentlessly pleaded with Washington to establish a separate Indian reservation. They anticipated this reservation would satisfy all three parties, but its creation in 1882 only created more problems, climaxing in the 1892 death of Lot Smith at the hands of Atsidí, the local Navajo headman. Tensions continued to increase until federal agents intervened in 1900 and placed Tuba City under a Presidential Executive Order. The order withdrew Tuba City from white claims and resulted in the expulsion of the Mormons from Tuba City in 1903. My contribution is to show how the Navajo and Hopi Indians may have considered the coming of the Mormons as an invasion by a group of foreigners which led to the resulting contest between the trios for the limited natural resources of the northern Arizona desert. Tuba City/Moenkopi has a complicated history and its origins remain contested because it was claimed not only by Mormons, but also by the Navajos and Hopi. Previous historians have neglected the wealth of history that come from using Native American oral histories. This thesis will include the Native point of view but will also integrate it with Mormon and non-Mormon narratives. Doing so will provide another perspective on some of the following: the founding of Tuba City, the creation of the 1882 and 1900 Executive Orders for Navajo and Hopi reservation expansions, the death of the Mormon Lot Smith, and Native American-Mormon relations in the late 1800s in northern Arizona.

Boggs was lieutenant governor of Missouri from 1832 to 1836. He was governor of Missouri from 1836 to 1840. Political upheaval was the order of the day as Jacksonian democrats overthrew, through the power of the ballot box, the establishment of the patrician leadership in the United States. Issues of equity, slavery, religion, settlement of the West, and divisive sectionalism threatened the Union of the states. President Andrew Jackson was the representation of the common man and the enemy of the monied oligarchy that assumed the right to rule the common people. Jackson's leadership enabled a powerful change in party politics as he became the charismatic figurehead of the Jacksonian Democratic Party. Boggs was a protégé of Thomas Hart Bennett, the powerful ally of Jackson and leading senator from Missouri. Boggs, beginning as a young man, rode the coattails of Benton right into the governor's mansion in Columbia, Missouri. This thesis examines Boggs' life and political career to ascertain whether or not he was truly a Jackson man as he represented himself to be to the electorate.

A more widespread interpretation relates the myth of the fleece to a method of washing gold from streams. More often, the Golden Fleece represents royal power, the spring-hero or a book on alchemy. According to Apollonius of Rhodes, a flying golden ram rescued Phrixus and Helle as their stepmother wantedto kill them. Phrixus safely reached Colchis where he sacrificed the ram and gave its skin to Aetes. Meanwhile, Pelias had usurped the throne of Eson and as his son reclaimed it, sent him to fetch the Golden Fleece. Jason assembled a remarkable group of heroes on board the Argo. At Colchis, the witch Medea helped Jason to complete the mortal tasks. Upon returning, she plotted the death of Jason's uncle, so both took refuge with their children in Corinth. There, the hero betrayed her as he fell in love with Creusa. The witch got rid of this rival, burnt the palace and slaughtered their chidren.In 1430, the Duke of Burgundy founded the Order of the Golden Fleece. As a shield, a sheepskin was suspended from a jeweled collar of firesteel linked by flints. But the choice of Jason caused controversy, so Bishop of Chalon linked it to the fleece of Gideon. As part of the Burgundian inheritance, the Order was a welcomed instrument to the ambitious Habsburgs to strengthen the bonds and Charles V added as a motto « Plus Oultre ».Performances of the Spanish Golden Age Theater were used to develop the ideology of the Catholic Monarchy. This essay explores Mormonism’s paradoxical relationship with American free market capitalism. Examining a series of case studies from Mormonism’s past, as well as several important Mormon economic thinkers, I argue that there is no single “Mormon” position on economics. Rather, there are a variety of positions, from libertarian individualism to market-suspicious communitarianism, that various Mormons at various times have marshaled theological and historical resources to support. This complex constellation of ideas not only debunks the myth of Mormonism as a monolith but also sheds light on a wide range of contemporary Mormon economic behavior, from the state of Utah’s proliferation of con artists and multilevel marketing schemes to the church’s large welfare system.

Like most Christian churches, dating to the New Testament, Mormons have practiced church discipline for certain conduct. Mormons impose disfellowshipment or excommunication for gravely immoral conduct and for publicly opposing the church or its teachings. Mormons also have a two-tiered order of worship (with Puritan parallels). All are welcome to participate in Sunday worship (though excommunicants cannot take the sacrament); but only those prepared and willing to commit to the full range of Mormon covenant obligations worship in the temple. The temple recommend defines this willingness to commit to such principles and practices as chastity, tithing, the Word of Wisdom (the Mormon health code), and affirming a personal testimony of Jesus Christ. The temple ceremony for which this interview grants access culminates in a visual image of the atonement of Christ, placing it at the center of the New and Everlasting Covenant.

Chapter 2 begins with a review of Crumb’s fascination with music, especially the blues, and his efforts over the years in building a huge record collection of his favorite music. Allusions to jazz and blues appear in many of his works and his admiration for particular musicians such as Jelly Roll Morton is exemplified by his illustrations to a biography of Morton which Crumb titled “Jelly Roll Morton’s Voodoo Curse.” In exploring Morton’s life, Crumb explores Morton’s encounter with hoodoo and interrogates the question whether such supernatural experiences are “real” or not. This is a question which Crumb will pursue in many of his drawings because it is related to his own search for his inner self. The chapter then turns to Charley Patton and Crumb’s illustrations entitled “Patton.” Religious themes occur in this narrative as well and this chapter explores the theme of the gifted musician who sells his soul to the devil in order to attain virtuosic musical powers. The link between surrealism and the lyrics of some blues songs is also explored, as well as Crumb’s own relationship to African American culture and religion.

Ribot, Morris, and Renschler compare two distinct case studies of Africans in order to investigate identity, origin, and population affinity of diasporic populations. In the first case study from Cobern Street in Cape Town, South Africa, the authors integrate stable isotope data and burial data with craniometric variation. In the second case, craniometric data are studied in a sample of Africans from the Morton Collection derived from a group of enslaved people brought to Colonial Cuba. In the Cobern Street setting, they find evidence of both first and second-generation immigrants or imported slaves from sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the possible presence of people of Asian descent (either slaves or immigrants). In contrast with the Cobern Street case study, Ribot and colleagues find high levels of diversity represented in the Morton sample, with some individuals from a single origin within Central, West, or East Africa, some individuals exhibiting multiple possible African origins, and finally, some other individuals exhibiting complex patterns of heterogeneity which may reflect origins and admixture from Asia, Europe, or Mesoamerica.

Despite their inexactitude, such classifications nevertheless serve to order our impressions, our experiences, and our knowledge. A similarly long-standing music historiographical bias towards works of known authorship has made it much more difficult to survey a repertory of anonymous compositions than a set of works classified as belonging to Josquin, Morton, Dufay, Busnoys, or Ockeghem. A single outstanding composition amidst the mass of anonymous works that still malice up about half the late medieval repertory has little opportunity to draw attention to itself and consequently fades into music historical oblivion.

This chapter shows how LDS officials and businessmen continuously found ways to bend railroads to their benefits or reshape Mormons institutions in order to flourish in their networks, such as the irrigation display at the Chicago World’s Fair. Regardless of the failure of the Bear River Irrigation company, it was proof of Mormon fortitude through cultural and locative righteousness. The company’s resources were reorganized by Mormon businessmen, and Mormons effectively promoted the LDS Church in other venues at World’s Fair. On the other hand, railroad barons’ contracts provided uninterrupted freighting, lucrative receipts of transcontinental tourism, and friendships with Mormon businessmen who intervened on their behalf in Congress. The results of their efforts were the combined naturalizing and mainlining of Mormonism, as tourists were convinced that they could learn from the Mormons to cultivate western lands and define religion in the modern west.

This chapter traces the roots of a musical theater aesthetic in Mormonism by arguing that vocal theatricality is a theological principle in the faith, to the degree that Mormonism is built upon a theology of voice. Two stories of vocal theatricality in early Mormon lore--namely, when Brigham Young mimics the voice of slain Mormon prophet Joseph Smith and when Book of Mormon prophet Nephi impersonates his slain ecclesiastical leader in order to obtain a set of sacred records--exemplify the Mormon ideal of a disciplined voice capable of speaking literally the voice of another person. This practice of vocal modeling is understood by Mormons to be a divine trait, one practiced by Jesus and other spiritual leaders in Mormon mythology, including modern-day Mormon prophets; learning how to do this well in effect prepares the faithful Mormon to someday be god-like himself. This chapter argues that it is a short leap from vocal theatricality in everyday contexts to vocal theatricality on the musical stage and suggests that Mormons turned to musical theater so readily in the twentieth century in part because it offered a secular platform to practice vocal theatrics.

This chapter traces the racial implications of the Mormons’ forced removal in 1833 from Jackson County, Missouri, where the Mormons had hoped to build New Jerusalem. Non-Mormons in the county forced the Mormons out following accusations that the Mormons were “meddling” with black slaves and Indians in order to convert them and to foment racial violence. In exile, the Mormons’ practice of (relative) racial inclusion became more circumscribed, though one famous black convert, Elijah Abel, joined the church. Promising not to upset the nation’s racial hierarchy, early Mormon leaders focused on making white converts in America and in the first international missions to the British Isles. White Mormons also began to reexamine their own racial/genealogical identities. Through the ritual of the patriarchal blessing, Mormons discovered that most of them were not actually “gentiles,” but Israelites and natural born heirs to the sacred covenant that God made with Abraham.

With the assassinations of Joseph Smith and Hyrum Smith in 1844, the Saints came to believe that the United States had sealed its doom. John the Revelator’s image of martyrs pleading for God to avenge their murders became a prominent element in Mormon apocalypticism. The Mormons fled Nauvoo and eventually the nation itself in order to distance themselves from their persecutors, but also to escape the very land that had been primed for judgment. Before departing, through verbal, written, and other ritualized means, the Saints cursed those complicit in their persecution.

Abstract Genetic epidemiology is a rapidly burgeoning field focusing on the distribution of disease in families and the impact of inherited disease in populations (Morton, 1982). While there is fruitful ground for collaboration between epidemiologists and geneticists (Neel et al., 1965), there seems to be an unbalanced contribution to the field from genetics (Khoury et al., 1986). Furthermore, while genetic epidemiology encompasses inherited disease in populations, emphasis has been on disease in collections of relatives. This emphasis has led to the development of increasingly complex, sometimes elegant, analytical methods for pedigree data that are often perceived as genetic epidemiology rather than its tools. Partially explaining this trend is the desire to find well-behaved biological and statistical models that explain the observed patterns of disease. Unfortunately, biological and statistical order come at the expense of the level of inference. For example, there is immense interest and discussion of the genetic epidemiology of coronary heart disease in the population, but nearly all analyses relate to risk factors such as the lipids, lipoproteins, and apolipoproteins (see Bock and Collins, 1987; Rao et al., 1984; Sing and Skolnick, 1979). It is also axiomatic that the clearer the statistical story, the more restricted is the population of inference.

Abstract In the manufacturing process of single-shaft multistage centrifugal compressors for process gases, factory tests are conducted to confirm that the lateral vibration satisfies the allowable limits. One of the problems that must be taken care of during the test is the increase in vibration due to the Morton Effect. The Morton Effect is a thermal bending vibration caused by the non-uniformity of the oil film temperature of the bearing, and many troubles have been reported in overhung rotors. However, there are few reports of the Morton Effect in single-shaft multistage compressors. This is thought to be because even if the Morton Effect did occur, it was often only a minor problem. Although it is a minor problem, it is necessary to predict and evaluate the Morton Effect in order to prevent a prolonged test process and costly countermeasures. In this study, a calculation method for the Morton Effect has been developed for a single-shaft multistage centrifugal compressor, and an evaluation index for the Morton Effect is proposed. The developed method is verified and the validity of the proposed evaluation index of the Morton Effect is checked using cases of increased vibration that occurred in factory tests.

Rendering large point clouds ordinarily requires building a hierarchical data structure for accessing the points that best represent the object for a given viewing frustum and level-of-detail. The building of such data structures frequently represents a large portion of the cost of the rendering pipeline both in terms of time and space complexity, especially when rendering is done for inspection purposes only. In this work we present OMiCroN -- Oblique Multipass Hierarchy Creation while Navigating -- which is the first algorithm capable of immediately displaying partial renders of the geometry, provided the cloud is made available sorted in Morton order. In fact, a pipeline coupling OMiCroN with an incremental sorting algorithm running in parallel can start rendering as soon as the first sorted prefix is produced, making this setup very convenient for streamed viewing.

Most of recent subchannel analysis codes are based on a multi-fluid model, and accurate evaluation of the constitutive equations in the model is essential. In order to get an accurate one of the interfacial friction force in two-phase bubble flows, experimental data on drag coefficient and interfacial area concentration have been obtained for air-water flows in 2×1 rods channel simplifying a BWR fuel rod bundle. In order to know the effects of liquid properties on the data, temperature of the test water was changed from 18 to 50 °C. The data are compared with the existing correlations reported in literatures. As a result, Hibiki and Ishii (2001) semi-theoretical correlation is found to give the best prediction against the present interfacial area concentration data. Delhaye and Bricard (1994) correlation also gives reasonably good prediction if their correlation were modified by incorporating liquid property effects. As for the drag coefficient, no correlation exist which can predict well the present data. Therefore, we developed a new correlation including three dimensionless numbers, i.e., bubble Capillary number, Morton number and Eo¨tvo¨s number. The correlation could predict well Liu et al.’s data (2008) as well as the present data.

The simulations of many offshore flow problems are currently facing the physics of complex mixtures of moving fluids. Typical situations where two-phase flow should be taken into account are slamming, wave breaking, slug flows, water entry, LNG sloshing and green water loading. In the present paper, a recent approach based on phase-field Lattice Boltzmann for high density ratios is examined. This scheme uses two distribution functions, one for pressure and momentum and the other distribution function for density with a compact isotropic differencing scheme to discretize the intermolecular forcing terms. Stress form of the intermolecular forcing terms is used to model pressure and momentum distribution function for its momentum conserving properties while potential form of the intermolecular forcing term is used for order parameter. We discuss the numerical method and implement it by solving various benchmark problems and compare with analytical solutions and results from previous literature. The method alleviates the issue of spurious currents which is investigated through the verification of convergence of Laplace law for a stationary bubble followed by oscillating droplet problem. Then we analyse a case of rising bubble under buoyancy for different Eotvos and Morton numbers and compare it with results from previous literature. To assess the capability of the method to solve complex problems the case of droplet impact on thin film has been performed. This problem studied for different Reynolds Number to examine the phenomenon of splashing and deposition of the droplet on thin films. Finally the capability of the method to simulate offshore problems is demonstrated by studying the ocean wave breaking problem with the periodicity in the flow direction.

Usually this heat is discharged to an adjacent water body which increases the water temperature near the outfall. In order to assess the ecological consequences of waste heat discharge one must first know the physical changes (temperature, velocity, salinity) induced by these discharges. It is with this later aspect, prediction of physical properties, that the current work is primarily concerned. Existing theoretical work on axisymmetric buoyant jets is confined to integral techniques developed by Morton in the early 1950’s. From these techniques only centerline velocities and temperatures can be calculated. Experimental data for this type of flow are essentially confined to centerline temperature measurements except for pure jet or plume data which constitute the extremes for a buoyant jet. The present work addresses the problem of developing a theoretical model for an axisymmetric laminar buoyant jet. The governing equations for an axisymmetric buoyant jet in rectangular co-ordinates are transformed into an orthogonal curvilinear co-ordinate system which moves along the length of the jet axis. The complete partial differential equations governing steady, incompressible laminar flow are solved in the new curvilinear co-ordinates using finite-difference techniques. This method is applicable to a much wider range of jet flows issued at arbitrary angles into quiescent or flowing ambience. This method is also applied to the case for multiple jets spaced by a finite distance apart. Results for the momentum jet, axial and radial distribution of velocity and temperature, show good agreement with published data.

The environmental fate and transport of energetic compounds on military training ranges are largely controlled by the particle characteristics of low-order detonations. This study demonstrated a method of command detonation, field sampling, laboratory processing, and analysis techniques for characterizing low-order detonation particles from 60 mm and 81 mm mortar rounds containing the insensitive munition formulation IMX-104. Particles deposited from three rounds of each caliber were comprehensively sampled and characterized for particle size, energetic purity, and morphology. The 60 mm rounds were command-detonated low order consistently (seven low-order detonations of seven tested rounds), with con-sumption efficiencies of 62%–80% (n = 3). The 81 mm rounds detonated low order inconsistently (three low-order detonations of ten tested rounds), possibly because the rounds were sourced from manufacturing test runs. These rounds had lower consumption efficiencies of 39%–64% (n = 3). Particle-size distributions showed significant variability between munition calibers, between rounds of the same caliber, and with distance from the detonation point. The study reviewed command-detonation configurations, particle transfer losses during sampling and particle-size analysis, and variations in the energetic purity of recovered particles. Overall, this study demonstrated the successful characterization of IMX-104 low-order detonation particles from command detonation to analysis.

Empirical measurements of the spatial distribution, particle-size distribution, mass, morphology, and energetic composition of particles from low-order (LO) detonations are critical to accurately characterizing environ-mental impacts on military training ranges. This study demonstrated a method of generating and characterizing LO-detonation particles, previously applied to insensitive munitions, to 81 mm mortar rounds containing the conventional explosive formulation Composition B. The three sampled rounds had estimated detonation efficiencies ranging from 64% to 82% as measured by sampled residual energetic material. For all sampled rounds, energetic deposition rates were highest closer to the point of detonation; however, the mass per radial meter varied. The majority of particles (>60%), by mass, were <2 mm in size. However, the spatial distribution of the <2 mm particles from the point of detonation varied be-tween the three sampled rounds. In addition to the particle-size-distribution results, several method performance observations were made, including command-detonation configurations, sampling quality control, particle-shape influence on laser-diffraction particle-size analysis (LD-PSA), and energetic purity trends. Overall, this study demonstrated the successful characterization of Composition B LO-detonation particles from command detonation through combined analysis by LD-PSA and sieving.

Or, même s’ils sont nés au Canada, qu’ils ont une bonne maîtrise du français ou de l’anglais, et même s’ils ont été scolarisés ici, les membres d’une minorité visible semblent peiner à se tailler une place sur le marché du travail. Une étude CIRANO (Boudarbat et Adom, 2023) conclut que les minorités visibles nées au Canada constituent l’angle mort des politiques d’intégration. Les personnes issues de la diversité, et particulièrement les jeunes, méritent toute notre attention pour parer aux risques d’exclusion socioéconomique et aux conséquences que cette exclusion pourrait avoir sur la cohésion sociale.

Postdetonation energetic residues can have environmental impacts that present a risk to military training-range sustainment. As munitions with new explosive formulations are developed and fielded, quantitative methods for assessing their residues are needed. Command detonation (i.e., static firing) allows residue testing to occur early in the acquisition process; however, its representation of live-fire residue production is uncertain due to differences in the initiation mechanism and cartridge orientation. This study aims to validate residue testing by command detonation through statistical comparison of residue deposition rates between live fire and command detonation. Live-fire residues were collected from fourteen 81 mm IMX-104 mortar cartridges fired onto snow, and deposition rates were compared with previous command-detonation tests of the same munition. Average live-fire deposition rates were 8000 mg NTO (3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one), 60 mg DNAN (2,4-dinitroanisole), 20 mg RDX (1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine), and 2 mg HMX (1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane) per cartridge. Compared to command detonation, live fire of the study munition produced significantly greater residues of NTO (p < 0.0001) and RDX (p = 0.01) but not DNAN (p = 0.067). Although absolute deposition rates of some IMX-104 compounds differed, command detonation was successful at predicting the order of magnitude of each IMX-104 compound for the studied 81 mm munition.
