The purpose of this study was to explore and delineate leadership practices, which could facilitate the transition of Catholic religious institutes into the world of the third millennium, within groups facing the diminishment, and even death, of current forms of religious life. Hermeneutical phenomenology, particularly as developed by Ricoeur, provided the philosophical base for an analysis of the multiple hermeneutical dimensions of culture, human sciences, spirituality and religion. Elements of postmodernism and feminism were also found to be useful starting points. Qualitative research provided the mechanisms out of which meaningful data was elicited and text and context explored. An extensive literature review and individual interviews with thirty women and men in leadership positions in religious institutes formed the basis of the research. Initial findings were tested against the insights of a focus group of religious involved and interested in the future of religious life and its leadership. Additionally, the responses of the leaders of religious congregations in NSW at their annual conference provided a valuable sounding board for the research findings. Core to the study, respondents believed, was a changing concept of God, described in the interviews as 'the larger God', and named as the foundation of contemporary religious commitment. A second fundamental call was pinpointed as that of radical commitment to 'the other'. 'Commitment to, and relationship with, the other' was seen as a critical focus for religious organisations in an increasingly divided and polarised world. For women and men currently in the midst of religious life transition, identity, mission and community were identified as specific orientations from which unfamiliar and emerging forms of 'the larger God' and 'relationship with the other' were examined.;Authenticating leadership was used to describe the form of leadership believed to be necessary during this time of transition to endorse and authenticate the tentative sparks of new life. This leadership was depicted as stimulated by a sense of spiritual dynamism and an outward focus, activating the motivation of the congregation towards 'the larger God' and 'the other'. Energising, empowering and challenging the group were described as intrinsic to these orientations. Demonstrating authenticity, embracing diversity, accepting suffering as the inevitable price of effective contemporary leadership, and 'holding leadership lightly', were also highlighted as essential elements for a leadership aimed at authenticating diverse expressions of new forms of religious life. Two clear leadership practices were named as essential for effective transition during this period of decisive transformation. Consciously managing the disintegration and death of current expressions of religious life, while simultaneously mobilising the energies of small emergent groups to explore and attempt new and diverse forms, were seen as the most difficult, but probably the most critical, challenges for leadership at this time.

Michel Foucault has exerted a pervasive influence on the concept of power in the twentieth century. By expanding the definition of power, and its horizons, beyond the state or organized institutions, he has bestowed power upon the weak as well as the strong, reconceptualized it from a one-dimensional, to an all-pervasive entity.
This thesis has adopted this expansive view of power and applied it to a study of the religious life within the Congregation de Notre-Dame of Montreal between 1693 and 1796. On a general level, the study, working within the framework of other research that has attempted to broaden the perception of female religious institutions, firmly links the congregation to the cultural, spiritual, political and economic life of its surrounding society. More precisely, it establishes the Congregation de Notre-Dame, within the Canadian historical context, as an institution not primarily founded, developed and centred solely on the work of one sanctified individual---Marguerite Bourgeoys---but one which, from its inception, owed its establishment and its existence to the network of linkages it formed through its mission. On a more specific level, the thesis moves to focus upon the relationship of power to the religious life in terms of three individual convent superiors---Marie Barbier, Marie-Josephe Maugue-Garreau and Marie Raizenne---and it explores these women as agents within their own social, political and spiritual frameworks.
In the process of this entire examination, this thesis set out to widen the perspective of much research surrounding the religious life. It has endeavoured to view the religious existence outside of the traditional dichotomies separating its active and contemplative dimensions, and to explore and give integrity and empowerment to its entirety. The study has also attempted to avoid depicting the existence of these women in terms of binary oppositions, of oppressed vs. the oppressor, and endeavoured to analyze them in terms of exchange. However, in spite of substantial evidence establishing these women as agents in their own right, the thesis inevitably returned, in one form or another, to the conclusion that, in the end, theirs was, indeed, a fragile authority.

The Order of Fontevraud, founded in 1100 by the hermit/preacher Robert of Arbrisssel was the only twelfth-century women's order incorporating into its structure a group of chaplains and lay brothers whose specific role was to serve the nuns. This thesis examines the origins of the order and demonstrates that the English foundations were a stage in its development, closely linked to its Angevin connections. Each of the two houses established in England c.l 150 was founded and patronised by supporters of Henry Plantagenet. Westwood, founded by the de Say family, lesser barons from Herefordshire, received a modest endowment. Nuneaton, founded by the magnate Robert, earl of Leicester, was richly endowed. Twenty years later Henry II expelled the Benedictine community from Amesbury replacing it with a group from Fontevraud, thus founding the third house. A fourth, Grovebury, is not treated; it was never a foundation for women. I have studied the process of endowment and shown that the wealth and status of the founder in no small measure determined the future prosperity of the foundation. The internal organisation of the Fontevraud houses has been explored, in particular the balance between local autonomy and dependence on the mother house. As well, I have examined recruitment and shown that this, too, reflected on the circumstances of foundation. My main focus has been on the economy of these three houses, their income and expenditure and the exploitation of their assets. The nuns are seen as a group of women who were dynamic and creative in managing their affairs. This has not precluded an investigation into the spiritual, and in particular, the liturgical dimension of life in the English foundations. Fundamentally the Order of Fontevraud is presented as an opportunity for noble women of England in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries to live religious life in a new order, one renowned for its strict interpretation of the Rule of St Benedict and for the prayerfumess of its members, and one in which women were manifestly in control of their own destinies.

The purpose of this project is to gain an understanding of the daily lives of nuns in an English nunnery by examining a particular prominent abbey. This study also attempts to update the history of the abbey by incorporating methods and theories used by recent historians of women's monasticism, as well as recent archaeological evidence found at the abbey site. By including specific examinations of Barking Abbey's last nuns, as well as the nuns' artistic and cultural pursuits, this thesis expands the scholarship of the abbey's history into areas previously unexplored. This thesis begins with a look at the nuns of Barking Abbey. the social status of their secular families, and how that status may have defined life in the abbey. It also looks at how Barking fit into the larger context of English women's monasticism based on the social provenance of its nuns. The analysis then turns to the nuns' daily temporal and spiritual responsibilities, focusing on the nuns' liturgical lives as well as the work required for the efficient maintenance of the house. Also covered is the relationship the abbey and its nuns had with their local lay community. This is followed by an examination of cultural activity at the abbey with discussion of books and manuscripts, music, singing, procession, and various other art forms. The final chapter examines the abbey's dissolution in 1539 under Henry VIII's religious reforms, including the dissolution's effect on some of the abbey's last nuns.

Women religious congregations experience a re-composition in the context of the contemporary modernity, establishing new sociable links between the individual and the forms of life and common action. This re-composition process is introduced due to the emergence of the individualism exists in the Women Religious Life. Institutional mechanisms lose legitimation power on the members while these enlarge the margin of freedom and autonomy. This context allows to build more equalitarian relationships, opens space for the difference and the plurality where women are more attentive to their subjectivity and needs. The relationships are elaborated from the individual experience and the subjects of the group who interact to each other, so as to broaden the society to form a sense and action. A dialectic accompanies this process in formation and the constant effort makes the building up of communities possible who try to establish a balance between the individual accomplishment and the common commitment through co-operation, dialogue and by overcoming of conflicts. This work discourses by the relationships that establishes between individual and community in areas of power, action and daily religious living
Congregações religiosas femininas experimentam uma recomposição no contexto da modernidade contemporânea mediante a emergência do individualismo. Estabelece-se novas teias de sociabilidade entre o indivíduo e as formas de vida e de ação comuns. Mecanismos institucionais perdem poder de legitimação sobre os membros enquanto estes ampliam a margem de liberdade e autonomia. Esse contexto permite a construção de relações mais igualitárias, abre espaço para a diferença e a pluralidade onde mulheres estão mais atentas a subjetividade e as necessidades próprias. As relações são elaboradas a partir da experiência individual e grupal dos sujeitos que interagem entre si e com a sociedade a fim de construir o sentido e a ação. Uma dialética acompanha este processo em formação e o constante esforço torna possível a construção de comunidades que procuram estabelecer um equilíbrio entre a realização individual e o compromisso comum mediante cooperação, diálogo e superação de conflitos. Este trabalho discorre sobre as relações que se estabelecem entre indivíduo e comunidade em áreas de poder, ação, cotidiano e vivência religiosa

This thesis demonstrates the intersection of caste, doctrine, religious authority and monasticism in the Swaminarayan sampradāy, a Hindu devotional tradition founded by Sahajānand Svāmī. Religious traditions affected indirectly or minimally by colonialism or the nationalist struggle have seldom been rigorously studied. This thesis brings attention to the Swaminarayan sampradāy to highlight how pervasive societal discourses like that of caste and internal doctrinal developments, impacted religious developments concerning authority, hierarchy, and power. The reification of a doctrine and the creation of a theological office, coupled with the deification of a monk, Guṇātītānand Svāmī, and his low-caste disciple Prāgjī manifested a fractious environment in which theology, authority and ideas about monasticism came to be contested. Theological ideas drove Prāgjī’s developing community, who adapted their devotion to Prāgjī as a result of stifling institutional politics and a modernizing Gujarat. Prāgjī’s incessant preaching, distinct theological beliefs and own budding community, which adored him, changed the course of Swaminarayan Hinduism in western India.

‘The Religious Life of Nabataea’ examines the evidence for the religious practices and beliefs of the inhabitants of the Nabataean kingdom. It analyses material produced in the large area of the north-western Arabian Peninsula that was under the rule of the Nabataean king until the annexation of his kingdom by Rome in AD 106. Because of the scarcity of literary sources describing Nabataea, this study is largely dependent on inscriptions, with architectural and archaeological remains helping to put these better into their context. It is argued that a number of methodological problems with earlier studies have produced an inaccurate picture of a ‘Nabataean religion’ that cannot be easily reconciled with this material. The focus has been on recovering the identities and characteristics of individual gods and the relationships between them. Inconsistencies and diversities in the evidence have often been minimised in order to produce a coherent model or system of beliefs that ‘the Nabataeans’ followed. Underpinning this has been the scholarly perception of Nabataea as a culturally monolithic bloc that was inhabited by a people following the same way of life. This study takes a different approach, analysing the material first and foremost in its local context. Each chapter therefore focuses on a different centre or region of Nabataea, before the conclusion compares these to consider the kingdom as a whole. It is concluded that there is very little sign of a coherent pattern of religious practice covering Nabataea. On the contrary, it is the variety of practices that emerges most strongly. Although this area was all under the control of the Nabataean king, its religious life was dominated by a diversity of much more local traditions.

This thesis is a study of religious life in Coventry between 1485 and 1558. Studies of this kind are necessary if we are to extend our knowledge of what was happening at the local level during the religious upheavals of the Reformation. Only when we know enough about how people in different areas reacted to the Reformation can we begin to establish general characteristics of religious change in the society. A study in depth of a Midland town has not yet been done. Coventry, because of its size and importance is a community particularly deserving of attention. It was one of the great provincial capitals of the late Middle Ages, ranking in terms of its population among the top ten urban centres outside London. Its importance owed much to its position as a centre of textile manufacture and, because of its geographical position, of regional and national trade. Coventry's economic importance was matched by its ecclesiastical status. Within its walls stood the great Benedictine cathedral priory, whose church was the see church of the 'twin' diocese of Coventry and Lichfield. Though the Reformation naturally dominates the period, considerable space has been devoted to establishing the character of religious life well before the beginning of religious change. This provides a solid base for discussion of the changes and allows the Reformation to be viewed over an unusually long perspective. Particular attention has been paid here to those factors, especially economic, which affected religious life before the Reformation and continued to do so after it had begun. The study is to this extent concerned with all factors affecting religious life in the city during the period and not just the religious changes of the sixteenth century, with a view to presenting a balanced view of religious life in its widest context. A variety of sources have therefore been used, such as wills, records of the city and of the religious and craft guilds together with diocesan and national archives. The evidence has been treated thematically and covers the following major topics: popular beliefs and religion in the city from the late Middle Ages to the end of Mary's reign; the role of the religious and craft guilds, the place of the clergy; the significance of Lollardy and the growth of Protestantism. While the evidence is reasonably full for Henry VII's and Henry VIII's reigns, the process of dissolution and the disposal of the confiscated lands, there is unfortunately less material for studying in detail the changes of Edward Vi's reign and the Marian Restoration. The conclusion arrived at is that pre- Reformation Coventry seems to have been a traditionally devout and orthodox city. Apparently Lollardy was virtually a spent force. The progress of the Reformation owed much to the serious economic conditions in which Coventry found itself in the 1530s and 1540s. While Protestantism undoubtedly gained ground during Edward Vi's reign, Coventry was far from being a Protestant city by 1553.

Bishop Æthelwold of Winchester (d. 984) was a reformer of Anglo-Saxon monasticism, but he was also deeply concerned with the religion of ordinary English laypeople. Whether in his promulgation of the cult of saints, vast elaboration of the liturgy, or extensive rebuilding of Winchester’s churches, Æthelwold demonstrated an interest in the lay religion that has been consistently ignored by modern scholars who fixate on his monastic zeal. This concern for the laity is natural in the context of Æthelwold’s own interpretation of the English past, as his goal of an all-monastic English Church necessitated a pastoral role for his reformed monks rather than their strict seclusion from the world. Such a goal was possible because Æthelwold initiated his reform program in the mid tenth century, when corporate religious life still provided the bulk of pastoral care in Winchester and the rest of southwest England, and the organized parish system was only a dim possibility as small local churches began to appear haphazardly in the north and east of the country. Æthelwold’s reforms were therefore very different from similar ones taking place on the continent or even in the sees of his fellow English reformers, and he attempted to recreate an imagined English past very unlike the Church that would eventually result a century later. The influence of his students, however, especially Wulfstan Cantor and the prolific Ælfric of Eynsham, shows that Æthelwold’s unusual interest in lay religion had far reaching consequences for the medieval English Church
