Images like other multimedia data need to be described as it is difficult to grasp their semantics from the raw data. With the emergence of standards like MPEG-7, multimedia data will be increasingly produced together with some semantic descriptors. But a description of a multimedia data is just an interpretation, a point of view on the data and different interpretations can exist for the same multimedia data. In this paper we explore the use of view techniques to define and manage different points of view on images. Views have been widely used in relational database management systems to extend modeling capabilities, and to provide logical data independence. Since our image model is defined on an object-oriented model, we will first propose a powerful object-oriented mechanism based on the distinction between class and type. The object view is used in the image view definition. The image view mechanism exploits the separation of the physical representation in an image of a real world object from the real object itself to allow different interpretations of an image region. Finally we will discuss the implementation of the image view mechanisms on the existing object models.

The aim of this study is to reveal teacher educators’ views of model and also to determine their mental models about it. Phenomenographic research design has been carried out in this study. The sample of study consists of 14 teacher educators from education faculties of different universities in Turkey. Semi-structured interviews that consisted of 7 questions were used to collect data. Besides, sample was asked draw a concept map on “model” in the last interview question. Results have shown that teacher educators give similar responses including unqualified explanations to the interview questions related to the definition of model, characteristics of them, and the objectives of using models. It can also be asserted, that teacher educators do not have scientific understanding on the modeling process. The analyses of their responses to the interview questions and their concept maps have shown that most of the teacher educators in the sample have proximate or goal oriented mental models of the “model”. Considering the results, it is suggested that teacher educators should not only follow the new theories, methods, or the applications in related literature theoretically, but also employ different theories, methods, or applications such as models and modeling in their courses. Key words: model, modeling, teacher educators, mental model.

Wonosobo is known as a mountainous area that stores the assets of nature tourism. The advantages of natural attractions, ideally should be supported by local communities. Tourist attractions are traditional art performances of local communities that support these needs. As an integrative need, the traditional art of the Wonosobo people - most of whom are farmers in the agricultural world - will be preserved as long as it is able to accommodate their views, aspirations, and ideas. Tourism development will work well, if supported by the views, aspirations, and ideas of local communities. From here it is necessary to find models of the development of traditional art attractions in the region Wonosobo. The purpose of this study is broadly directed to two things. Firstly, it provides new insight into the strategy and development of natural tourism that is in line with the local art assets, both regarding management system and the awareness of the potential of the area. Second, implement participatory approach models for local communities in order to formulate regional development policies, in particular the development of tourist areas

Maintaining views is a huge responsibility for content creators as it is related to reputation. A successful content creator always attempts to maintain views at minimum viral views. This study aims to investigate the communication behavior of content creators in designing content and how to keep views at a minimum viral view of 5,000 views on Snack Video. This study used an ethnographic study of public relations with the IPPAR analysis model (Insight, Strategic Program, Implementation Program, Action, and Reputation) with a qualitative approach. The results of this study show that 1. Content creators performed phases in designing content by analyzing a situation, building concepts, creating content, and evaluating content in communication behavior, 2. Content creators acted consistently, have genuine ideas, followed viral content, and interacted with the audience in maintaining views. In designing content and maintaining views is related to the reputation and selling value of content creators, so the impact obtained by content creators is support through followers, messages, likes, views, shares, fanbase, and comments from the audience.

Although RDF ontologies are expressed based on XML syntax, existing methods to protect XML documents are not suitable for securing RDF ontologies. The graph style and inference feature of RDF ontologies demands new methods for access control. Driven by this goal, this paper proposes a query-oriented model for RDF ontology access control. The model adopts the concept of ontology view to rewrite user queries. In our approach, ontology views define accessible ontology concepts and instances a user can visit, and enables a controlled inference capability for the user. The design of the views guarantees that the views are free of conflict. Based on that, the paper describes algorithms for rewriting queries according to different views, and provides a system architecture along with an implemented prototype. In the evaluation, the system exhibits a promising result in terms of effectiveness and soundness.

The idea of a combined reference model- and view-based specification approach has been proposed recently in the software engineering community. In this paper we present a specification technique based on graph transformations which supports such a development approach. The use of graphs and graph transformations supports an intuitive understanding and an integration of static and dynamic aspects on a well-defined semantical base. On this background, formal notions of view and view relation are developed and the behaviour of views is described by a loose semantics. The integration of two views derived from a common reference model is done in two steps. First, dependencies between the views which are not given by the reference model are determined, and the reference model is extended appropriately. This is the task of a model manager. If the two views and the reference model are consistent, the actual view integration can be performed automatically. For the case of more than two views more general scenarios are developed and discussed. All concepts and results are illustrated at the well-known example of a banking system.

Recently, 3D model retrieval based on views has become a research hotspot. In this method, 3D models are represented as a collection of 2D projective views, which allows deep learning techniques to be used for 3D model classification and retrieval. However, current methods need improvements in both accuracy and efficiency. To solve these problems, we propose a new 3D model retrieval method, which includes index building and model retrieval. In the index building stage, 3D models in library are projected to generate a large number of views, and then representative views are selected and input into a well-learned convolutional neural network (CNN) to extract features. Next, the features are organized according to their labels to build indexes. In this stage, the views used for representing 3D models are reduced substantially on the premise of keeping enough information of 3D models. This method reduces the number of similarity matching by 87.8%. In retrieval, the 2D views of the input model are classified into a category with the CNN and voting algorithm, and then only the features of one category rather than all categories are chosen to perform similarity matching. In this way, the searching space for retrieval is reduced. In addition, the number of used views for retrieval is gradually increased. Once there is enough evidence to determine a 3D model, the retrieval process will be terminated ahead of time. The variable view matching method further reduces the number of similarity matching by 21.4%. Experiments on the rigid 3D model datasets ModelNet10 and ModelNet40 and the nonrigid 3D model dataset McGill10 show that the proposed method has achieved retrieval accuracy rates of 94%, 92%, and 100%, respectively.

This paper attempts to first give an introduction and appraisal of the unique contribution made by the English literary critic C. S. Lewis, towards a systematic presentation of the “Medieval Model”, the dominant cultural background that underlies most of the literary works in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period. Then the paper analyses the relationship between the major features of the Medieval Model and four aspects of Lewis’s literary views, especially in reading and interpreting: namely, receptive reading, “built-in significance” of the text, respect for textual authorities, and seeking accord rather than discord in reading and interpreting. By doing so the paper reveals, on the one hand, how Lewis’s Model as described in The Discarded Image serves as an indispensable map for readers of Medieval and Renaissance literature; and on the other hand, how Lewis’s literary stand is deeply informed and inspired by this Model, in which he takes great delight.

People reason about uncertainty with deliberately incomplete models. How do people hampered by different, incomplete views of the world learn from each other? We introduce a model of “ model-based inference.” Model-based reasoners partition an otherwise hopelessly complex state space into a manageable model. Unless the differences in agents’ models are trivial, interactions will often not lead agents to have common beliefs or beliefs near the correct-model belief. If the agents’ models have enough in common, then interacting will lead agents to similar beliefs, even if their models also exhibit some bizarre idiosyncrasies and their information is widely dispersed. Recently, learning urban region representations utilizing multi-modal data (information views) has become increasingly popular, for deep understanding of the distributions of various socioeconomic features in cities. However, previous methods usually blend multi-view information in a posteriors stage, falling short in learning coherent and consistent representations across different views. In this paper, we form a new pipeline to learn consistent representations across varying views, and propose the multi-view Contrastive Prediction model for urban Region embedding (ReCP), which leverages the multiple information views from point-of-interest (POI) and human mobility data. Specifically, ReCP comprises two major modules, namely an intra-view learning module utilizing contrastive learning and feature reconstruction to capture the unique information from each single view, and inter-view learning module that perceives the consistency between the two views using a contrastive prediction learning scheme. We conduct thorough experiments on two downstream tasks to assess the proposed model, i.e., land use clustering and region popularity prediction. The experimental results demonstrate that our model outperforms state-of-the-art baseline methods significantly in urban region representation learning.

The first two articles in the Views and Reviews section look at Canadian festivals and discuss the particular urban niches that they fill. Bruce Barton and Pil Hansen describe their experiences at HIVE2, a series of eleven performances, staged by major experimental theatre companies in Vancouver and nestled within the 2008 Magnetic North Festival. Moving back and forth between critical commentary and a more phenomenological, in situ account of their experiences as spectators, Barton and Hansen paint a vivid picture of an audience-oriented festival, one that aims to generate intimate encounters with spectators as fully present and “differentiated individuals.” Their description of the jam-packed HIVE2 events — where the number of spectators far exceeded the audience capacity given for each show (some permitting only one spectator at a time) — resonates with Heather McLean’s view piece on the over-programming of the Toronto Nuit Blanche festival, an annual all-night celebration of contemporary art. McLean reads large-scale arts festivals like Nuit Blanche in relation to the creative-city model that Toronto has adopted in recent years, a model driven by new and disconcerting forms of inter-urban competition. Here, she draws on her own experience as a (potential) presenter at Nuit Blanche — originator of the satirical, interactive performance, Assbook — to reflect on the larger curatorial, civic and spectatorial interests that animate the festival.

Abstract The general contribution of this research is the implementation of new formal type of relative view, which has been added to the Black-Litterman Model (BLM) for asset management. It is well known that the BLM integrates both historical data about the assets’ returns and subjective views given by experts and investors. Such complicated model is expected to give more realistic assessment about the dynamical behavior of the stock exchanges. The BLM applies both absolute and relative views about the asset returns. The paper proves that the currently applied relative views with equal weights are equivalent to assess the risk of a virtual portfolio with these assets of the view which participate with equal weights. The paper extends this form of views, applying non-equal weights of the assets. This new formal description has been tested on a market, containing ten world known indices for a 10 years period. The calculations which have been provided give benefits to the suggested non-equal weighted form of subjective views. It gives more conservative results and decreases the portfolio risk supporting the same level of returns, provided by the average market behavior.

AbstractThe complexity and flexibility of tagmemic theory, as a semiotic theory developed by Kenneth L. Pike, can be better understood by examining how it applies to a simple semiotic system like traffic lights. We can then compare the result with how it functions in analyzing a piece of natural language. Tagmemic theory introduces three observer viewpoints – the particle view, the wave view, and the field view. Each view generates a suite of questions to answer. Any one of the views results in a “complete” description of traffic lights, from which the information about the other views can be inferred. And yet each view is distinct in texture from the others, and the existence of such multiple views – each with a claim to emic integrity and each serving as a perspective on the whole – has to be accounted for in a robust semiotic approach. The same phenomena occur when we apply the three views to the analysis of meaning in natural language. The chief illustration is to analyze the meaning of the word dog in multiple ways. The multi-dimensional potential for semiotic analysis highlights the limitations of Aristotelian logic and symbolic logic, both of which simplify for the sake of rigor.

<p>With the development of multimedia technology, the number of 3D models on the web or in databases is becoming increasingly larger and larger. It becomes more and more important to classify and retrieve 3D models. 3D model classification plays important roles in the mechanical design field, education field, medicine field and so on. Due to the 3D model's complexity and irregularity, it is difficult to classify 3D model correctly. Many methods of 3D model classification pay attention to local features from 2D views and neglect the 3D model's contour information, which cannot express it better. So, accuracy the of 3D model classification is poor. In order to improve the accuracy of 3D model classification, this paper proposes a method based on EfficientNet and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to classify 3D models, in which view feature and shape feature are used. The 3D model is projected into 2D views from different angles. EfficientNet is used to extract view feature from 2D views. Shape descriptors D1, D2, D3, Zernike moment and Fourier descriptors of 2D views are adopted to describe the 3D model and CNN is applied to extract shape feature. The view feature and shape feature are combined as discriminative features. Then, the softmax function is used to determine the 3D model's category. Experiments are conducted on ModelNet 10 dataset. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better than other methods.</p>

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide insights into the views and attitudes that psychiatrists have about recovery colleges (RCs). Design/methodology/approach Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten psychiatrists from the Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation Trust. Findings Psychiatrists had a strong concept of the RC model, and were broadly positive about it, recognising many benefits. Various challenges were also acknowledged including how the RC model interacts with the medical model. Originality/value This is the first known study to explore solely the psychiatrists’ views of RCs, a group who are likely to be particularly influential within services. The sample was relatively unexposed to RCs, enabling insight into how the RC is perceived by those outside of its functioning as well as the state of wider organisational support, which is important for the success of RCs.

Abstract Inspired by recent Bayesian interpretations about the psychology underlying religion, the paper introduces a theory proposing that religious conversion is shaped by three factors: (i) novel relevant information, experienced in perceptual or in social form (e.g., following interaction with missionaries); (ii) changes in the utility (e.g., expressed in an opportunity to raise in social rank) associated with accepting a new religious creed; and (iii) prior beliefs, favouring religious faiths that, although new, still remain consistent with entrenched cultural views (resulting in the phenomenon of syncretism). From the theory, a multifactorial picture of conversion emerges. Based on which factor is primarily engaged in each case, a classification of different types of conversion can be derived, with a remarkable fit with empirical literature. The theory offers a description of the processes underlying religious conversion and, highlighting the links among apparently incompatible previous views, it reconciles these views within a unifying framework.

A depth map represents three-dimensional (3D) scene geometry information and is used for depth image based rendering (DIBR) to synthesize arbitrary virtual views. Since the depth map is only used to synthesize virtual views and is not displayed directly, the depth map needs to be compressed in a certain way that can minimize distortions in the rendered views. In this paper, a modified distortion estimation model is proposed based on view rendering distortion instead of depth map distortion itself and can be applied to the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) rate distortion cost function process for rendering view quality optimization. Experimental results on various 3D video sequences show that the proposed algorithm provides about 31% BD-rate savings in comparison with HEVC simulcast and 1.3 dB BD-PSNR coding gain for the rendered view.

We propose a novel multi-period trading model that allows portfolio managers to perform optimal portfolio allocation while incorporating their interpretable investment views. This model’s significant advantage is its intuitive and reactive design that incorporates the latest asset return regimes to quantitatively solve managers’ question: how certain should one be that a given investment view is occurring? First, we describe a framework for multi-period portfolio allocation formulated as a convex optimization problem that trades off expected return, risk and transaction costs. Using a framework borrowed from model predictive control introduced by Boyd et al., we employ optimization to plan a sequence of trades using forecasts of future quantities, only the first set being executed. Multi-period trading lends itself to dynamic readjustment of the portfolio when gaining new information. Second, we use the Black-Litterman model to combine investment views specified in a simple linear combination based format with the market portfolio. A data-driven method to adjust the confidence in the manager’s views by comparing them to dynamically updated regime-switching forecasts is proposed. Our contribution is to incorporate both multi-period trading and interpretable investment views into one framework and offer a novel method of using regime-switching to determine each view’s confidence. This method replaces portfolio managers’ need to provide estimated confidence levels for their views, substituting them with a dynamic quantitative approach. The framework is reactive, tractable and tested on 15 years of daily historical data. In a numerical example, this method’s benefits are found to deliver higher excess returns for the same degree of risk in both the case when an investment view proves to be correct, but, more notably, also the case when a view proves to be incorrect. To facilitate ease of use and future research, we also developed an open-source software library that replicates our results.

Three-dimensional (3D) CAD models are useful for applications in the areas of CAD/CAM/CAE/CAQ. A desirous trend creating this model is a 3D model reconstruction from views. With this method, geometric information can be easily entered into computers while continuing to use existing 2D drawings in modern applications. Most of the previous works used three views as the input despite many common parts represented by only two views. A reconstruction system using only two views is the subject of this work. The proposed method has been implemented and tested by an Objectarx 2015 program running on AutoCAD 2018. The resultant 3D Solid model has been evaluated for compatibility with CAM/CAQ/CNC systems.

There are several views on the problems of people with disabilities, called 'models', but they address issues not so much of interaction as of different perspectives on attitudes towards people themselves and rather on perceptions of disability. However, none of them considers human interaction as a subject with a specific object. This article proposes a simplified theoretical conceptual model that considers the interaction between the person as a subject with a specific object, and is applicable to different subjects and objects in different contexts.

Contrastive learning (CL), which can extract the information shared between different contrastive views, has become a popular paradigm for vision representation learning. Inspired by the success in computer vision, recent work introduces CL into graph modeling, dubbed as graph contrastive learning (GCL). However, generating contrastive views in graphs is more challenging than that in images, since we have little prior knowledge on how to significantly augment a graph without changing its labels. We argue that typical data augmentation techniques (e.g., edge dropping) in GCL cannot generate diverse enough contrastive views to filter out noises. Moreover, previous GCL methods employ two view encoders with exactly the same neural architecture and tied parameters, which further harms the diversity of augmented views. To address this limitation, we propose a novel paradigm named model augmented GCL (MA-GCL), which will focus on manipulating the architectures of view encoders instead of perturbing graph inputs. Specifically, we present three easy-to-implement model augmentation tricks for GCL, namely asymmetric, random and shuffling, which can respectively help alleviate high-frequency noises, enrich training instances and bring safer augmentations. All three tricks are compatible with typical data augmentations. Experimental results show that MA-GCL can achieve state-of-the-art performance on node classification benchmarks by applying the three tricks on a simple base model. Extensive studies also validate our motivation and the effectiveness of each trick. (Code, data and appendix are available at https://github.com/GXM1141/MA-GCL. )
