Summary A steam injection project was conducted in diatomite containing heavy, biodegraded oil (12°API, ?3,000 cp) in the South Belridge field, Kern County, California. The diatomite interval tested (the San Joaquin, Etchegoin, and Belridge diatomites) underlies an active steamflood in the sandstone of the Tulare formation. Initially, the test was to determine the viability of cyclic steam recovery from an unpropped, steam fractured completion in the diatomite. Four standard steam cycles were completed, with sluggish oil recovery [oil-steam ratios (OSR) were less than 0.1]. The well was then hydraulically fractured and propped. Two additional steam cycles were completed that had considerably greater oil recovery (OSR>0.2). The project was then configured for steamdrive by drilling a closely spaced producer. The new producer was initially completed with a propped hydraulic fracture and cycled once. The original cyclic producer was converted to continuous injection, and a two-well steamflood was operated for more than 1 year. During the steamflood, heavy oil was mobilized and response has been continuous. The configuration of the "pattern," with only one producer, results in poor capture efficiency. The performance of this incomplete pattern has been, as expected, poor (<0.1 OSR), but steam injection is shown to be a promising recovery technique for the heavy oil diatomite. The process is applicable to California diatomites, or any other high porosity, low permeability, shallow reservoirs that contain a significant concentration of heavy oil. Introduction It is estimated that the diatomite in the San Joaquin Valley of California contains as much as 10 billion barrels of oil. Mobil's former holdings in South Belridge, Lost Hills, and McKittrick, now part of Aera Energy, a joint venture between Mobil and Shell, contain on the order of 1 to 2 billion barrels. These formations are marked by high porosity (40 to 70%) and moderate to high oil saturation that can result in very high oil concentrations that are amenable to such recovery techniques as steam injection. The low permeability of diatomite (generally <1 md), however, makes any recovery technique very challenging. The diatomaceous facies of the Monterey formation is widespread along the western and central portion of the San Joaquin Valley and is one of the reservoir intervals for commercial production from the Lost Hills, South Belridge, McKittrick, Midway-Sunset, and Buena Vista fields. In some of these fields, such as South Belridge, productive diatomite reservoirs directly underlie highly productive massive steamflood operations in sandstones of the Tulare formation. These thick diatomite strata (up to 1,000 ft) form an attractive target and, in some respects, represent the final frontier for thermal recovery operations in onshore California. Especially attractive, if thermal operations can be utilized to unlock the diatomite, is the existing steamflood infrastructure available for the diatomite, particularly as conventional operations (such as the Tulare) decline sharply. South Belridge could certainly benefit from such a synergistic implementation. The South Belridge diatomite reservoir exhibits considerable areal and vertical variation in oil properties. In the central and southeastern portions of what were Mobil's properties, the upper portion of the diatomite reservoir contains heavy, biodegraded oil, the kind found in the overlying Tulare. Below this, the oil grades to intermediate and light. Further complicating the description is the mineralogy: the highly porous Opal A lies in the shallower depths, but has changed, due to increased temperature accompanying burial, from amorphous opaline silica to the less porous, more mechanically competent Opal CT. In South Belridge, Mobil had primary recovery operations for light oil in both the Opals A and CT, and waterflood operations in light (overlapping into the intermediate) oil in the Opal A. All wells for these operations are hydraulically fractured, a technique that opened the way in the late 1970's for accelerated development of the diatomite reservoirs in the San Joaquin Valley.1 Even so, the ultimate expected recovery is small (<20%, even for waterflood). Currently, Aera has no commercial operations in the heavy oil diatomite. Heavy and intermediate oil, at least for the former Mobil portion of South Belridge, represent a significant fraction of the total holdings. Commercial cyclic steam operations have been ongoing by Union, Chevron,2 and Texaco in the McKittrick field and pilot operations for cyclic and steamflood have been initiated by Cal Resources and Mobil (now combined as Aera Energy) in the South Belridge field.3–9 During the late 1980's, Mobil had several isolated field trials of cyclic steam injection in wells hydraulically fractured and propped in intervals containing either heavy or intermediate oil. These tests paved the way for our first intensive pilot to determine the feasibility of thermal operations in the heavy oil diatomite at South Belridge. Previous thermal pilots in the diatomite for heavy oil have utilized cyclic steam. The only previous pilot for steamflooding,3–9 also in the South Belridge, targeted a light oil interval. This pilot therefore represents the first cyclic steam followed by steamflooding for a heavy oil interval in the California diatomite. An additional area for concern to be addressed in this thermal pilot was how steam injection would affect the problematic subsidence in the diatomite10,11 and potential wellbore failures.12,13 Original Purposes of the Test. The initial purpose of the test was to determine the viability of high pressure steam injection into an unfractured interval of diatomite in the South Belridge containing heavy oil. The test had the following original objectives:quantify incremental oil production attributable to steam stimulation;better define the crude oil gravity and viscosity in the South Belridge diatomite;confirm the laboratory-based predictions of siliceous matrix dissolution and crude distillation resulting from steam injection;determine the feasibility of linkage to the natural fracture system; anddetermine the impact of steam cycling on localized formation compaction.

The diploma thesis dealt with a partial problem of conversion of the mini-excavator E19 by Bobcat with an internal combustion engine to emission-free propulsion. The main task was design and construction of electrical and hydraulic circuits focusing on the drive of a mini-excavator. The simulations verified the properties and behavior of the mini-excavator under different conditions and initial settings. The results were comfirmed by experimental measurements. The output of the simulations recommended adjustments to the values of individual parameters depending on the travel speed but also the efficiency of the entire machine.

Zero emission excavator have same parameters as diesel engine powered version of it. To solve this problem simulations were done for hydraulics and control algorithm of this machine. To find right parameters of simulation models, experiments have been done. There were also proposed some methods to obtain the right set of parameters. The result of this diploma thesis is control algorithm for directional control valves of this very unique mini excavator that doesn't have any competitor (in terms of control algorithm). Set of parameters was also tested during experiments.

Part of the work is the methodical creation of models from the basic part of the machine to a simplified model of the overall machine, its functional verification and calibration based on available information’s and measurements. In this paper, selected parameters of the overall machine model are verified based on performed measurements, the suitability of selected components is verified, and the optimization and modification of the model is performed based on verification. The aim of the thesis is to present the simulation and verification procedure and its practical use in the development of an emission-free wheel loader with electric drive.

The aim of this study is to develop a dynamic model of the loader system of a backhoe-loader. Rigid bodies and joints in the loader mechanism and loader hydraulic system components are modelled and analyzed in the same environment using the physical modelling toolboxes inside the commercially available simulation software, MATLAB/Simulink. Interaction between the bodies and response of the hydraulic system are obtained by co-operating the mechanical and hydraulic analyses. System variables such as pressure, flow and displacement are measured on a physical machine and then compared with the simulation results. Simulation results are consistent with the measurement results. The main result of this work is the ability to determine the dynamic loads on the joints and attachments of the backhoe-loader. In addition to that, prototyping time and costs can be highly reduced by implementing this model in the design process.

This thesis deals with innovative working hydraulic systems for mobile machines. Flow control systems are studied as an alternative to load sensing. The fundamental difference is that the pump is controlled based on the operator’s command signals rather than feedback signals from the loads. This control approach enables higher energy efficiency and there is no load pressure feedback causing stability issues. Experimental results show a reduced pump pressure margin and energy saving potential for a wheel loader application. The damping contribution from the inlet and outlet orifice in directional valves is studied. Design rules are developed and verified by experiments. A novel system architecture is proposed where flow control, load sensing and open-centre are merged into a generalized system description. The proposed system is configurable and the operator can realize the characteristics of any of the standard systems without compromising energy efficiency. This can be done non-discretely on-the-fly. Experiments show that it is possible to avoid unnecessary energy losses while improving system response and increasing stability margins compared to load sensing. Static and dynamic differences between different control modes are also demonstrated experimentally.

Hydraulic systems represent a crucial part of the drivetrain of mobile machines. The most important drivers of current developments, increasing energy efficiency and productivity, are leading to certain trends in technology. On a subsystem level, working hydraulics are utilizing effects by improving control functions and by maximum usage of energy recovery potential. Independent metering and displacement control, partly in combination with hybrid concepts, are the dominating approaches. Traction drives gain advantage from optimized power split transmissions, which consequently are being used in a growing number of applications. On the level of components, increase of efficiency and dynamics as well as power density are important trends. Altogether, design of systems and components is more and more based on modular concepts. In this sense, among others, sensors and control elements are being integrated to actuators; electric and hydraulic technology is being merged. In order to achieve maximum efficiency and performance of the entire machine, control of hydraulics has to include the whole drivetrain and the entire mobile machine in its application. In modern words, mobile hydraulic systems are a part of cyber physical systems.

En stor del av verksamheten består av säljoch marknadsföringsaktiviteter mot marknadens kunder. I dagsläget vill MultiDocker finna metoder för att höja resultaten av sina mest värdeskapande aktiviteter och förädla sina tjänster gentemot kund. I min rapport har jag arbetat fram några enkla rekommendationer för hur MultiDocker kan påbörja ett genomgående kvalitetsarbete. Genom att systematisera och processkartlägga verksamheten kan MultiDocker tillföra metoder och verktyg för att följa upp och utvärdera resultaten av olika delar av verksamheten. Målet med denna rapport är inte att införa en ISO-certifiering, eller tillämpning av en heltäckande managementfilosofi, utan att höja visa organisatoriska och kulturella delar inom företagets verksamhet, för att kunna driva ett effektivt kvalitetsarbete. Dessa förändringar är värdefulla steg för att MultiDocker ska kunna närma sig en framtida ISO-certifiering.
Quality, constant improvements and process perspective are central parts within Quality Management. MultiDocker Cargo Handling AB produces mobile hydraulic cranes mostly for customers in a harbour environment. A major part of the MultiDocker business is focused on sales and marketing of their products and services. MultiDocker is currently requesting methods for improving the results of their most important activities and services towards their customers. The result of this report is a few simple recommendations for how MultiDocker in an effective way can start implementing quality management methods. By systematisation and process orientation, MultiDocker can add methods and routines for follow up and evaluation of various areas within their business. The purpose with this report is not an implementation of an ISO certified quality system or a complete management philosophy. This report aims to recommend some organisational and cultural changes for MultiDocker to start the implementation of quality management within their business. The changes that are recommended are necessary and valuable steps towards a future ISO 9000 certification.

Hydraulic systems that damp active oscillation operate according to a certain non-linear and time-varying algorithm. It is difficult to create a controller based on its dynamic model. This chapter proposes a new operation regime of the controller based on neuron nets by combining the advantages of the adaptive, radial, and basic functions of the neuron net. Its undoubted advantages are a learning (tilting) ability in real time to process indefinite, nonlinear disturbances, and to change the value of the active force in the hydraulic leaf spring by adjusting the weight coefficients of the neuron net and/or the radial parameters of the basic function. The model is a ¼ hydraulic active sprung mass of a mobile vehicle. The modeling shows that the use of a neuron net controller makes the sprung mass much more efficient.

In recent years, research institutions worldwide have developed a number of new mobile hydraulic systems. Despite their improved energy efficiency, these systems have yet to gain market acceptance due to their related increase in component costs and decrease in robustness. At the Institute for Fluid Power Drives and Controls in Aachen, a new system for mobile machines, named STEAM (Steigerung der Energieeffizienz in der Arbeitshydraulik mobiler Arbeitsmaschinen), is being developed using inexpensive off-the-shelf components. The aim is to improve the total system efficiency by considering all the subsystems in the machine. This is done by integrating the internal combustion engine (ICE) into the hydraulic design process. By using a constant pressure system in combination with a low-cost fixed displacement pump the hydraulic system is designed to ensure the ICE experiences a constantly high load in a region of high efficiency, so-called point operation. To decrease the hydraulic losses incurred when supplying the linear actuators with flow, an additional intermediate pressure rail with independent metering edges is used. This enables various energy efficient discrete operating modes, including energy regeneration and recuperation.

Government regulations incentivize investigation of the potential for hybridization of non-road mobile machinery (NRMM). Many approaches to energy saving in hydraulic systems have been established. One of the methods first introduced in the aerospace industry is “decentralized” or “zonal” hydraulics. The decentralized system is realized with pump-controlled actuators, which are distributed throughout the system. In this research, decentralized hydraulics are realized with a direct-driven hydraulics (DDH) drive and implemented on a 1-ton class JCB micro excavator. The original valve-controlled system for boom, stick, and bucket is replaced with three DDH units. In a DDH unit, a double fixed displacement pump/motors with a speed-controlled electric servomotor directly controls the amount of hydraulic oil pumped into and out of the system. The hydraulic pump/motors create flows dependant on the rotating speed of the servomotor. A hydraulic accumulator is used as a conventional tank replacement. The aim of this paper is to investigate the efficiency improvement of the excavator with decentralized hydraulics compared to an electrified conventional load sensing system, from an energy consumption point of view under a typical digging cycle. In order to acquire the energy consumption distributions of the DDH and load sensing (LS) system, a model of the micro excavator which comprises mechanics, hydraulics, electronics, and control systems is developed in Matlab/Simulink. Simulation results demonstrate that the total efficiency of the excavator with LS control is 18.3%, and with DDH (decentralized hydraulics) is 71.3 % for a selected typical working cycle.

There is a potential for significant improvement on fuel efficiency of many mobile machines by using hybrid technology as the Diesel engines are often driven at very inefficient operating points in these applications. The load generated by the working hydraulics of a mobile machine is often rapidly changing and contains high peak powers compared to the mean power required. This paper studies three different hydraulic hybrids in a wheel loader application. The study is based on a measured sand-loading Y-cycle. In addition to the hybrid systems, a load sensing proportional valve based reference machine and a modified machine based on independent metering valves are analyzed. All five system alternatives are analyzed systematically to enable a comparison of their fuel efficiency. The study shows that the fuel consumption of the machine can be decreased up to 28 % in such load cycle by using a suitable hydraulic hybrid system.

Abstract One challenge for mobile robotics is the limitation of onboard processing power and the size of equipment required to accomplish basic tasks. While hydraulic pistons can generate high force output for various types of manipulation tasks, they require large equipment including the pistons, compressors, and the power sources in order to operate properly. For hydraulics to be applied to small to medium scale robots, the scale of the system needs to be as minimalistic as possible. For this purpose, we designed a single stage valve actuated robotic arm. Since system’s dynamic behavior is complex and only piston distance data is observable, a heuristic method, a Fuzzy Logic controller, is investigated. The goal is to create and optimize a system using a single piston and small compressor while maintaining effective control of the arm. Fuzzy Logic Controller system details, experimental setup and results are discussed for various motion profiles and finally its effectiveness is compared with a traditional PID controller approach. Robotics is a field that is constantly evolving and looking for creative new ways to provide solutions to new and old obstacles. One challenge for mobile robotics is the limitation of onboard processing power and the size of equipment required to accomplish basic tasks. The issue especially with smaller scale mobile robots is the lack of power and space on the robot to fit equipment and any critical apparatus for said equipment. While hydraulic pistons can generate high force output for various types of manipulation tasks, they require large equipment including pistons, compressors, and power sources in order to operate properly. Typically, a motor is used to power a pump which pressurizes hydraulic fluid. This fluid is used by the machine via hydraulic tubes and then is sent back through a filter and returns to the pump. This method of using hydraulics requires a large amount of power and a large amount of space. For hydraulics to be applied to small to medium scale robots, the scale of the system needs to be as minimalistic as possible. For this purpose, we designed a single stage valve actuated robotic arm. These employed the use of small electronic control boards fitted to the compressor system used to drive the hydraulics. For types of systems that must operate with discrete impulses of data to reach a target or reference value predominantly use Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) Controllers. These would be programmed in the onboard computer driving the hydraulic system. These systems require careful tweaking of various gain values to set up appropriately. However, the choice of an accurate controller structure relies on the application. Since system’s dynamic behavior is complex and only piston distance data is observable, an alternative method of control is investigated. Fuzzy logic is a control method which takes inputs from sensors and determines the output in terms of logical statements that can be in degrees between 0 and 1 rather than strictly 0 and 1 as seen in traditional Boolean logic. The particular equipment of interest in this study is a pneumatic robotic arm and all associated hardware. The goal is to create and optimize a system using a single piston and small compressor while maintaining effective control of the arm. Both a PID controller and a Fuzzy Logic controller were used to control the same system for the same set of tests. After PID control design approach is briefly discussed, Fuzzy Logic Controller system details, experimental setup and results are discussed for various motion profiles. Finally, the effectiveness of a traditional PID controller is compared to the effectiveness of a fuzzy logic controller.

Hydraulic systems employed in several industrial and mobile applications present significant advantages, such as a high power-to-weight ratio and fast dynamic response. However, these systems have low efficiency due to high power dissipation. A recent concept called “digital hydraulics” comprises particularities that create opportunities for a reduction in load loss. This paper proposes a configuration and control method for actuator speed control based on the principles of digital hydraulics. In this context, several fixed displacement units and on/off valves are connected directly to the actuators without throttling valves. The system studied here presents three operation methods (pump mode, motor mode and idle mode), which allows discrete valves to replace continuous or flow control valves in order to control the actuator. Furthermore, a fixed or variable displacement pump with large displacement is replaced by several small, fixed displacement units. Simulations are performed with a co-simulation technique using AMESim and MATLAB. The actuator speed, inlet and outlet pressures on the fixed displacement units and flow rate in the circuit lines are analysed. Preliminary simulation results exhibit smooth transitions between speed levels, adequate dynamic performance, low power dissipation and high energy-storage capacity. A specific limitation of this technology is the obtained actuator discrete speed. The main contributions of this research are the development of a digital hydraulic system configuration and its control strategy, which allows speed control of hydraulic actuators and provides the capacity to store energy.

In this paper a closed loop hydraulic cylinder velocity control is realized with a mobile valve. The velocity feedback is based on the valve specifications and the measurement of the pressure difference over the control notch of the valve. Offsets and other non-linearities are approximated based on the pressure rise in chambers and the specifications of the manufacturer. The flow gain curve is measured with a method that suits mobile applications. The cylinder velocity is calculated from the spool control signal, measured cylinder chamber and supply pressures. The calculated velocity is compared to the actual velocity over the 1–100% velocity range and behaviour under disturbances is studied. The pressure compensator function is realized based on calculated velocity.

Abstract This paper deals with the hydraulic oil consumption of mobile working machines. Different mobile working machines are going to be investigated by setting out their hydraulic oil consumption per hour. The substitutable amount of mineral by bio-based hydraulic oil is examined by an exemplary calculation for a construction project. The observations are intended to establish the working medium bio-based hydraulic oil on the lubricants market and to increase its use quantities, especially for mobile machines, with regard to environmental protection. Environmentally friendly lubricants and process materials are used in a wide variety of technical applications. In mobile machines in particular, efforts are being made to further establish bio-based lubricants. Due to unforeseeable accidents and leaks, a considerable amount of lubricants is released into the environment every year. This results in contamination of the affected environment. For this reason, contaminated ground, for example, has to be excavated refurbished after contact with hydraulic oil in order to return them to their original natural state. Bio-based hydraulic oils minimize this risk through their biodegradability and antitoxicity. Despite the proven performance of environmentally friendly hydraulic oil, the market share of biolubricants is stagnating at a constant and very low level. The majority of mobile machines use mineral oil, as working fluid in their hydraulic systems. To evaluate the substitution potential of mineral oil by bio-based oil in construction projects, various mobile machines are considered. In addition to widely used mobile machines like, for example excavators or wheel loaders, road construction equipment is also considered, due to a high hydraulic oil consumption resulting through heavy heat loads.
