CrN/CNx nano-scale multilayered films were deposited on Si (100) substrate by closed-field unbalanced magnetron sputtering. Designed experimental parameters enabled an evaluation of the effects of negative substrate bias voltage (Vb), and bi-layer thickness λ (by changing substrate rotation rate) during deposition on the structural and mechanical properties of multilayer films. These multilayers were characterized and analyzed by transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and nanoindentation measurements. In all cases, the CNx layers were amorphous and independent of Vb, while the microstructures of the CrN layers were dependent primarily on Vb. The CrN layers showed a mixed structure phase consisting of CrN, Cr2N, and Cr at Vb = -(40-120) V. At higher Vb values (-140 V or above), the Cr2N phase was dominant along with low CrN phase content. AFM measurements revealed that the root-mean-square (rms) surface roughness of the CrN/CNx film was 2 nm at Vb= -200 V whereas the rms values were about 9.5-3.3 nm for lower Vb values of -(40-180 V). By nanoindentation measurements, a maximum hardness of about 36 GPa was observed at Vb= -140 V. The improved mechanical properties of the films are correlated to the phase formation during deposition.

Two types of multilayer ZnO varistors are prepared by the chemically synthesized (CS) powder and the mixed oxide (MO) powder. The ceramic microstructure analysis shows that the multilayer variestor (MLV) ceramic prepared by the CS powder has the fine grain, the homogeneous distribution of grain size and the uniform dopant distribution. The CS powder prepared multilayer ZnO varistors display better electrical properties, including higher nonlinear coefficient, higher breakdown voltage, higher peak current, lower leakage current and lower clamping voltage, than those made by the mixed oxide powder. All these superior electrical properties are attributed to the CS powder, which makes more uniform dopant distribution throughout the multilayer ZnO varistors. The homogeneous distribution for the various dopants in the varistor ceramic has been achieved by the chemically synthesized doped ZnO powder. Therefore, the chemically synthesized powder can be used in the manufacture of high performance multilayer ZnO varistors.

In this paper, single and multilayer superhydrophobic composite coatings, based on fluorocarbon resin and micro-tourmaline and nano-TiO2powers, were prepared by conventional air spray method. The tourmaline and TiO2particles were modified by fluoroalkylsilane. The wettability and marine corrosion of the coatings surfaces were investigated respectively by contact angle measurement and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) method, and their morphology was examined by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the water contact angle of coatings was mainly controlled by the mass ratio of the fluorocarbon resin and particles. The contact angle increased with the increase of particle concentration, which reached about 156° when the mass ratio of the particles and fluorocarbon resin was 2:1 for single and multilayer composite coatings, but the impedance valve of the multilayer is higher than that of the single layer.

We introduce a novel and versatile approach for controlling anti-reflective (AR) properties of multilayer films based on layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly (SA) method. For the fabrication of these films, blend (i.e., mixed) layers containing both polyanions (i.e., titanium precursor (TALH) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)) were assembled with polycation (i.e., poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDAD)) for the formation of the high refractive index multilayers and on the other hand, the negatively charged silica particles with the diameter of about 100 nm were employed for low refractive index layer. The refractive index of TALH:PSS/PDAD multilayer was controlled by blending ratio and annealing temperature as TALH has the relatively high refractive index (n = 1.68) in comparison with that (n = 1.46) of conventional polyelectrolytes (PEs) at room temperature and furthermore these titanium precursors are partially changed into TiO2 with relatively high refractive indices (n = 1.50 ~ 1.81) at annealing temperature of 250 oC. In the case of silica particle layer used for low refractive index layer, the calculated refractive index was about 1.35 due to much vacancy among the adsorbed silica colloids although the inherent refractive index of silica material is about 1.45. As a result, the films composed of TALH:PSS/PDAD multilayers with tunable refractive index and silica colloidal layer can easily modulate the optical properties of multilayer films by blending ratio and heat treatment.

We propose a new method for a light energy flux density (or irradiance) calculationin an arbitrary multilayer stack containing coherent and incoherent layers. Although the wellknown General Transfer-Matrix Method (GTMM) can be successfully used for the overall reflectanceand transmittance calculation, it does not allow us to obtain the corresponding irradiance depthprofile straightforwardly. We show in this paper that subsequent phase-shift integrations over theincoherent layers result in the reflectance and transmittance expressions identical to those of theGTMMformulation. However, the alternative mathematical approach allows us to derive an analyticalexpression for irradiance at an arbitrary depth of the multilayer stack, thus making it possible tocalculate the absorptance depth profile. In fact, the GTMM expressions for the overall reflectanceand transmittance turn out to be special cases of the irradiance calculation at the incident andemergent surface of the multilayer stack. Consequently, the proposed Phase-shift Integration Method(PIM) represents a continuous irradiance calculation model without any energy imbalances onlayer interfaces. In addition, since we are able to obtain analytical layer thickness derivatives, the PIM is suitable for use with gradient optimization methods. We verify the method on threecases of an encapsulated bifacial heterojunction silicon (HJ Si) solar cell, a perovskite solar cell, and a perovskite/silicon tandem solar cell, which all consist of thin and thick layers.

In this paper, the implementation and testing of multilayer graphene/epoxy resin nanocomposites are discussed. Firstly, the epoxy resin hardener is mixed with the multilayer graphene, and then mixed with the main agent, then poured into the mold, and the low temperature cooling system is used. The curing time of the epoxy resin is slowed down, and the bubble is removed before the complete hardening by the vacuum defoaming method, and the mechanical properties such as tensile strength and toughness are compared with the pure epoxy resin after being sufficiently hardened. In this paper, we investigated the effect of multilayer graphene content on mechanical properties by using the tensile test and impact test. We discussed the effect of multilayer graphene content on the coefficient of elasticity of the multilayer graphene/epoxy resin composites at different stretching rates. And the toughness of the multilayer graphene/epoxy resin composites was evaluated by impact test. After the experiment, it was found that the stretching rate has a certain degree of influence on the grapheme/epoxy resin composite material. And that the addition of 2% multilayer graphene to epoxy resin had the best effect and could effectively improve the coefficient of elasticity and toughness.

Due to the limited spatial resolution of remote hyperspectral sensors, pixels are usually highly mixed in the hyperspectral images. Endmember extraction refers to the process identifying the pure endmember signatures from the mixture, which is an important step towards the utilization of hyperspectral data. Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) is a widely used method of endmember extraction due to its effectiveness and convenience. While most NMF-based methods have single-layer structures, which may have difficulties in effectively learning the structures of highly mixed and complex data. On the other hand, multilayer algorithms have shown great advantages in learning data features and been widely studied in many fields. In this paper, we presented a <i>L</i>1 sparsityconstrained multilayer NMF method for endmember extraction of highly mixed data. Firstly, the multilayer NMF structure was obtained by unfolding NMF into a certain number of layers. In each layer, the abundance matrix was decomposed into the endmember matrix and abundance matrix of the next layer. Besides, to improve the performance of NMF, we incorporated sparsity constraints to the multilayer NMF model by adding a <i>L</i>1 regularizer of the abundance matrix to each layer. At last, a layer-wise optimization method based on NeNMF was proposed to train the multilayer NMF structure. Experiments were conducted on both synthetic data and real data. The results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm can achieve better results than several state-of-art approaches.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK)/polyetherimide (PEI) blends (50/50, v/v) keeping the crystal phase of PEEK have been manufactured by alternate PEEK/PEI layer stacking. This strategy avoided the complete miscibility of both polymers, keeping layers of PEEK and PEI unmixed along the sample thickness, as well as promoting the formation of a smooth interfacial layer where PEEK and PEI were mixed. The properties of this interface after processing at molten state and different times was studied by DSC, DMA, and X-Ray synchrotron. These techniques allowed monitoring the evolution of glass transition, where isolated Tg’s for both pristine polymers were observed even after long processing time. PEEK crystallinity slightly decreased during manufacturing, whereas PEEK crystal parameters did not vary. These observations show that, although the interface—the zone where both polymers are mixed—grew, layers with pristine polymers remained even after prolonged processing time. The preservation of the PEEK crystallinity was also observed in the mechanical properties of the multilayer PEEK/PEI films, which were compared with pristine PEEK and PEI films. Multilayer samples processed for shorter times rendered higher young modulus, tensile strength, and strain at break.

A thin electrode layer embedded at the interface of two piezoelectric materials represents a common feature of many electroceramic multilayer devices. The analysis of interface cracks between the embedded electrode layer and piezoelectric ceramic leads to a nonstandard mixed boundary value problem which likely prevents a general analytical solution. The present work shows that the associated mixed boundary value problem does indeed admit an exact elementary solution for a special case of major practical interest in which the two piezoelectric half-planes are poled in opposite directions perpendicular to the electrode layer. In this case, it is found that oscillatory singularity disappears, in spite of the unsymmetric characters of the problem, and electroelastic fields exhibit power singularities. Particular emphasis is placed on the near-tip singular stresses along the bonded interface. The results show that tensile stress exhibits the square root singularity along the interface whereas shear stress exhibits the dominant-order nonsquare root singularity. In addition, the present model indicates that a pure electric-field loading could induce the dominant-order singular shear stress directly ahead of the interface crack tip. [S0021-8936(00)00602-4]

The method of velocity of elastic waves hodograph, aimed at non-destructive testing of structurally heterogeneous composite materials and products based on them, as well as multilayer products and constructions, is considered. The theoretical basis for determining the propagation velocity of elastic waves in a multilayer medium by the hodograph method is given. Based on the studies, recommendations are given for determining the propagation velocity of elastic waves in each individual layer of a multilayer medium, which allows non-destructive testing of the physicomechanical characteristics of each layer of a multilayer medium. It is shown that in addition to simple multiple reflections in a homogeneous medium, in a multilayer medium with parallel interfaces consisting of two or more layers, complex types of multiple reflected waves and mixed waves (reflected-refracted and refracted-reflected) can arise. The main task of applying the low-frequency ultrasonic method is to determine the acoustic parameters of the propagation of elastic waves (velocities, amplitudes, spectra). The main methods for determining the elastic wave velocities are considered, based on the hodograph equation of the indicated reflected waves in a multilayer medium.

It was found that the hardness increased with increasing substrate temperature. This hardness enhancement was probably caused by the modulus difference in the interface between layer Ti and TiN or the preferred crystalline orientation TiN(111).

The microstructure of Mo / Be multilayer periodic systems was studied by X-ray reflectivity and diffractometry and EXAFS spectroscopy. It was found that in the Mo / Be system, mixed zones of different compositions form at the boundaries. At the Mo-on-Be border, there is a mixed zone, similar in composition to MoBe22, and at the Be-on-Mo border, with MoBe2. As a result of thermal annealing for one hour, the structure of the transition boundaries in the multilayer system remains stable. With further annealing, diffusion processes occur that lead to the formation of another compound at the interface — MoBe2, instead of MoBe22, however, the period of the structure remains unchanged. This behavior explains the increase in the reflection coefficient of Mo / Be mirrors after annealing for one hour and a further decrease in the reflection coefficient with a longer annealing time.

This paper presents the design and fabrication of a stand-alone high directivity coupler using high dielectric constant multilayer organic (MLO) technology. MLO is a low cost high density interconnect technology that allows for the realization of high Q and low loss inductor and capacitor elements that allow for the miniaturization of RF and mixed signal circuits. Q values above 300 have been measured for MLO with costs being lower than both LTCC and TFOS technologies. Low-loss lumped and distributed elements were realized using a novel multilayer build up process that supports both land grid array (LGA) and edge terminations. The couplers which support frequencies between 700 MHz and 2GHz exhibit coupling coefficients above 20db and isolation greater than 40db. The couplers can be combined with low pass harmonic filters in the same technology.

Graphene/NR composite was prepared in emulsion blending and the multilayer graphene was about 4-8 layers. Different mass fraction of this kind of graphene was mixed into NR in this work. The thermal conductivity of this compositive system was respected to be improved apparently since the high thermal conductivity of graphene. In this work, TEM(Transmission electron microscope) was used to observe the structure and morphology of the multilayer graphene. NETZSCH LFA was used to research the change of thermal conductivity with the fraction of grahene changing. DSC(differential scanning calorimetry) was used to research the structure change in the series of composites. The TEM results showed that the graphene we used is 4-5 layers. LFA had proved that the multilayer graphene has affected the thermal conductivity of matrix greatly and DSC also provided evidence to support the same views.

In this research removal of chromium from an aqueous solution by multilayer-mixed (reduction/sorption) bed via scrap iron as zero valent iron and charred nutshell (walnut shell) as adsorber were studied. Both batch and continuous system were conducted. The batch system reveals that the adsorption process was of favorable type. Three models were used to describe the adsorption process. Freundlich model is matching well to the data with (R2=0.975). In the continuous system , two sets of experimental were considered, the first set (multilayer bed) conducted by fixing the characteristics of the scrap iron bed (bed height 0.2 cm, particle size 500 µm) and varying the walnut shell parameters, the optimum value of this set recorded as (bed height 2.5 cm, particle size250µm). While for the second set of experimental after fixing the optimum values of the walnut shell bed and varying the scrap iron bed characteristics, the optimum values were (height 1cm, particle size 500µm as filling). Also, the Mixed bed configuration were studied by conducting the optimum conditions for the previous experiment. it was found that at any certain time the mixed layer offers the maximum efficiency of removal rather than the multi-layer bed.

We present the technology of the solid solution with formula (1-y)[(1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3]-yPb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3 where x=0.25, y=0.1 i.e. 0.9(0.75PMN-0.25PT)-0.1PFN. The addition of PFN decreases the temperature of final sintering and as a result such composition is interesting material for multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC). The powder of 0.9(0.75PMN-0.25PT)-0.1PFN has been obtained in three steps. In first step we obtained MgNb2O6. In second step FeNbO4 was obtained. In final third step the 0.9(0.75PMN-0.25PT)-0.1PFN was obtained from mixed powders MgNb2O6, FeNbO4 and PbO and TiO2. For obtained ceramics the following investigations have been made: XRD patterns, microstructure, EDS and main dielectric properties v.s. temperature. It has been stated that obtained ceramic powder is a good material for obtaining MLCC

MoSN/MoS2 multilayer films were deposited by a sputtering MoS2 target in alternate Ar and Ar/N2 mixed atmospheres with different nitrogen flow rates. The influence of nitrogen flow rates on the microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties of the prepared films were investigated. The multilayer film exhibited the preferred orientation of (002) plane for MoS2 sublayers and amorphous structure for MoSN sublayers. Introducing N2 into the source gas resulted in a much more compact structure for multilayer films due to the suppression of columnar growth of MoS2 film. With the increase of the nitrogen flow rate, the hardness of the multilayer film firstly increased from 2.3 to 10.5 GPa as the nitrogen flow rate increased from 4 to 10 sccm and then turned downwards to 6.5 GPa at 20 sccm. MoSN/MoS2 film deposited with an optimized microstructure exhibited low friction coefficients below 0.03 and a wear life higher than 1.8×105 revolutions in vacuum. Meanwhile, the optimized film showed an ultralow friction coefficient of 0.004~0.01 and wear rate of 4.7 × 10−7 mm3/N·m in an ultrahigh vacuum. Both the enhanced hardness by N-doping and sustainable formed MoS2 tribofilm contributed to the improved tribological property of MoSN/MoS2 multilayer film.

Annotation:
This paper is an attempt to develop an innovative high strength and ductile Ni/Ni3Al/Ni multilayer composite, using spark plasma sintering (SPS). Ni3Al powders were first synthesized by mechanical alloying of elemental pure Ni and Al powders. The synthesized intermetallic powders were then mixed with Ni powders in a way that a Ni/Ni3Al/Ni multilayer composite can be achieved. Scanning electron microscope, optical microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), microhardness, and shear punch tests were used to characterize microstructure and mechanical properties of the synthesized composite. Results show that a rather sharp interface with a perfect metallurgical bonding has formed at the Ni/Ni3Al joint. The synthesized multilayer composite has a perfect combination of strength and ductility. The maximum shear strength of Ni/Ni3Al/Ni multi-layer composite is significantly higher than that of Ni3Al, while its ductility is comparable to that of pure Ni.

ABSTRACTA number of applications call for the organization of resistive non-volatile memory (NVM) into large, densely-packed crossbar arrays. While resistive-NVM devices often possess some degree of inherent nonlinearity (typically 3-30× contrast), the operation of large (>1000×1000 device) arrays at low power tends to require large (> 1e7) ON-to-OFF ratios between the currents passed at high and at low voltages. Such large nonlinearities can be implemented by including a distinct access device together with each of the state-bearing resistive-NVM elements. While such an access device need not store data, its list of requirements is almost as challenging as the specifications demanded of the memory device. We review our work on high-performance access devices based on Cu-containing Mixed-Ionic-Electronic Conduction (MIEC) materials [1–7]. (This version focuses only on the MIEC-based access device itself; previously-published longer versions of this work [8–10] also include more extensive surveys of competing devices as well.) These devices require only the low processing temperatures of the Back-End-Of-the-Line (BEOL), making them highly suitable for implementing multi-layer crossbar arrays. MIEC-based access devices offer large ON/OFF ratios (>1e7), a significant voltage margin Vm (over which current < 10nA), and ultra-low leakage (<10pA), while also offering the high current densities needed for PCM and the fully bipolar operation needed for high-performance RRAM. Scalability to critical dimensions (CD) <30nm and thicknesses <15nm, tight distributions and 100% yield in large (512kBit) arrays, long-term stability of the ultra-low leakage states, and sub-50ns turn-ON times have all been demonstrated. Numerical modeling of these MIEC-based access devices shows that their operation depends on Cu+ mediated hole conduction. Circuit simulations reveal that while scaled MIEC devices are suitable for large crossbar arrays of resistive-NVM devices with low (<1.2V) switching voltages, a compact vertical stack of two MIEC devices in series could support large crossbar arrays for switching voltages up to 2.5V.
